The title says it all, i have just hard reset my phone, installed no apps and already am getting a low memory notification
If i sort my applications by size it shows that the largest is 'contacts storage' which is currently taking up 70mb
the second largest application is google maps which is 5mb...
i only have about 10 contacts and then the rest is synced via facebook where about 50 email addresses have been added.
is this right?

I have an extensive address book and calendar. When syncing to my pc (Outlook & Windows 7) I am always getting a "not enough memory" (regardless of which rom I use). I have an 8gb memory card that I would like to utilize to free up some main memory. Any thoughts on how to do this (and yes I have searched)?
How does the default gmail app on Desire work? Does it download the mails to my phone, taking up phone space or SD space? Or are they only accessed through the net? Also the app doesn't seem to care about what setting i set under: POP Download under my gmail account, where you can alter what mails should be downloaded and such.
you decide. you can tell it to download the headers for x days, or grab the full emails for x days.
How? The sync says 4 days, but i can keep on scrolling down to access all my emails it seems.
in mine - menu>more>settings.
everything is in there
Only options i know of that may have something to do with what you mentioned is Labels under settings, in there i can choose "number of days to sync" and which label i want to sync. But even if i set my Inbox to say 4 days, i can still scroll further down and get mails that is over a month old.
Are you connected to internet while doing that ? If yes, the app might load the mails on-the-fly ...
It'll save to the internal storage. When space is approx.

What do you mean when "space is approx"?
Edit: Anyway, it looks like the default gmail app is directly connected to the account or something, as changes i do in the gmail app, also happens at gmail.com, even though i've said to "keep Gmails copy in inbox" it looks to move them if i click delete or archive in the gmail app.
I have suffered a double whammy on my desire, after a running froyo for a week last saturday I suddenly had a low memory storage warning and subsequently my gmail, contacts and calander sync stopped. After transferring all the apps I could to the SD card and removing trivial apps I got up to 16meg phone memory and sync began to work again. Yesterday phone memory reduced again and sync stopped, deleted more apps sync started to work but looking at my gmail on the laptop to confirm emails were up to date my browser version declared my account had been put into lockdown due to unusual activity WTF
Today memory back down to 11meg, sync stopped again, deleted a few more apps (ones I wanted) then updated facebook for android and suddenly 100meg of memory appeared . Calendar and contacts sync fine, gmail started to sync and looked to be up to date, however refresh bar in Gmail Widget continues to show loading conversations and sync symbol is flashing. Decided to have a look from the laptop again sure enough emails were up to date, came out of the inbox on my laptop to look at the calandar to check that and no problem. Tried to go back into my inbox on the laptop and up popped the good old Account Lockdown due to unusual activity please come back in 24hours
Now I am realy peed off I was just about to clean up my inbox as there are quite a lot of old emails in there but cannot access the account on line.
Does any one have any ideas cos I do not know where to go next.
I only have my one gmail account [email protected] (migrated from @googlemail.com had to wipe and reset my phone for that one a couple of months ago thanks google)
check your sent items and see if some spam bot is sending out kak from your gmail account. Either way change your gmail password just to be on the safe side.
Got back into Gmail account after the lockdown and deleted 580 emails got down to 10. On my desire the loading conversations still shows constantly when looking at my inbox even though there are no more conversations other than those showing, the sync icon was not showing on the notification bar.
All seemed well for a week then this morning noticed my phone was running hot in my pocket, looked at it and the sync icon was on in the notification bar. Looked at the sync menu and lo and behold Gmail was continually refreshing, this managed to kill my battery after a couple of hours. Checked on my work computer and Gmail account seemed fine, put phone in car dock on way home and sync icon came up again on gmail. Got home and checked on laptop and Gmail account is locked down again.
Any ideas peeps.
I have 122 contacts on my phone, HTC contacts is saying there is 46mb taken up. Is this right or am i using way too much memory for my contacts
Few items I wanted to share about the way Galaxy S3 handles contacts which I don’t fully grasp. My earlier phone did not have any of those problems (Nexus S) which I accidently dropped in the pool and as a result I ended up buying the S3. My Nexus S still does not power up. I am also to this forum so please go easy on me…. Here is my list or frustrations:
1. Pictures look tiny and small:
Why use small and low resolution to show pictures? There is enough empty space when displaying a contact.
2. Facebook and LinkedIn always syncs entire contact network:
I cannot seem to understand how the contacts sync works. Facebook and LinkedIn accounts are always synced fully – selecting option “sync only with existing contacts” does nothing as I still end up with an address book full of people I don’t want on my phone. It always syncs entire Facebook and LinkedIn contact networks.
3. Twitter does not sync at all.
What happened here, does anyone know? Is twitter removed from supported apps?
4. Duplicated records:
When I turn on the sync I ended up with multiple duplicates. What does “join contacts” mean exactly?
5. Unable to hide certain “groups” / accounts
Is there a way to hide contact on my SIM card? My good old nexus S had the ability to only display groups I wanted on the phone and this one completely disregarded that option.
6. Reject call list
Reject list is the only part I like about S3’s contact management.
7. Copy / edit contact’s pictures
Is there a way to copy / move pictures from Facebook or LinkedIn to Google address book?
Thanks,
yeah i have the same issues with the facebook app syncing. when i click sync only contacts, it syncs all, and also does not sync the pictures. hmm
