Ok, we've all got mates with iPhone. And many of us have done the browser speed test etc. But what other kick ass apps or tricks are there to pee over our iPhone friends.
I'll start one. Google maps, then street view, then go into compass mode! You can look around the location without having to touch the screen! Makes iPhone users green with envy! Anyone got anymore weaponry to show of our devices specifically against iphones
Thanks

Google googles < Can you actually uninstall it??
Read a few comments where ppl had installed on their Desire, but could not uninstall.
Let me know plz, if ya can i will try that app also
I could uninstall goggles.
No problem.
show them that you can browse and connect to network folders via wireless, their Iphone can NEVER do that
Hung77, how'd you do that. It's over my head, but if you tell me that would be great.
And yeah that skymap you can get for iPhone unfortunately.
^ use ES File Explorer. (better than Astro, imo)
It is how i access shared folders on my network.
And seriously, you can't even compare crappy iPhone to the Desire.
Just for start, the screen is bigger, better and brighter. just put your Desire beside the iPhone and look at those poor slobs faces.
Other, the customization level with the Desire is something the iPhone can't even imagine to have.
Plus, just wait till wifi N and HD video comes into action.

customizable settings such as colours, how strong each factor is and how many droids
just blow lightly on the screen and see the little droids cower
WIDGET
iPhone does not have that, period.
Put some nice widgets on your home screen, and ask "Do you have this?"
The Desire has Android and the iPhone doesn't.

Yeah but I was meaning tangible stuff that you could demonstrate/show off! Ok another example I've used. Xscope browser with single pin zoom. Double tap with one thumb, then simply scroll right to zoom in or scroll left to zoom out! Very handy when smoking a fag or just lazy to move the other hand to grip the phone. Then watch the text get reformatted automatically!
How about Voice Search and Voice-to-Text? Actually I'm not entirely sure if iPhone has that. I tried these out on the Desire for the very first time and it's like magic.
Text-reflow in the browser? Or Flash content in the browser?
Download files from the browser that are not photos?
Attach a file to an email that's not a photo?
Multi-tasking!?
Smart-dialing?
My personal favorite: Tell your iPhone friend that his phone looks so awesome that you would want to swap your HTC Desire with him for a few hours. But insist on swapping your SIM cards because you don't want him using your minutes or whatever. That's when he'll realize there's a serious design flaw that Apple made. It's impossible to remove the SIM card on the iPhone without a tool.

Hmm, I can't figure out how to get Street View in Google Maps. I tried a place with Street View enabled (New York City), but there's no layer for it. The GM version is 4.0.0. How can I update it?

Just point and hold your finger somewhere on a road. Then the address pops up, click it, and the you can click the little man in the right of the screen. And woila, street view.
I must admit it's a bit hidden from us.
It was complicated for me first time.
If you do a voice search of somewhere in newyork like say pizza hut, )iPhone also does this) you'll get your map etc,(also on iPhone but not as accurate). Then press your little man icon to get streetview ( iPhone can also do this). But once in streetview, select compass mode and you can pan left or right, and especially in new York city up and down by simply moving the phone. And iPhone CANT do that! Shouldn't matter what version you have, mines just standard.
My mates have their mouths wide open when I show them augmented reality apps.
Try showing them Layar or Wikitude
How about the basics...

Camera face-recognition (that pi$$es them off

Without buttons, it makes most of them a bit useless.
I have mobipocket reader installed at the moment, and this will handle html and plain txt files, which are what most of the books I have are in, but I am wondering if there's anything better.
On the iPhone there's a really nice one that slides the pages up and down by tapping the top or bottom of the page, but I forget what it was called. I remember it cost about £5 though, but it was worth it.
Ideally something that displays full screen, will handle plain text and html, as well as other formats, and will turn the page by touching the screen.
The issue I have with mobipocket is the file and folder navigation seems really messed up, and you can't expand the column sizes when you want to look at the files in the open file window. With long book names you have no idea what they are
Any suggestions?
TIA
TRy these
I use mobibook too but have also tried these:
uBook: not bad but menu's a bit small.
Allreader+: pretty good but hard to figure out options
Tiny reader: poor

or maybe this one

Mobipocket is great for the commercial books in PRC format. I can touch the screen on the bottom to turn a page.
I also have AEB+ to map the volume buttons to up/down and I use it to rotate the screen.
I have to say, I haven't kept up to date with the latest bells and whistles versions, but for years I've used, and am happy to entirely recommend iSilo.
It will read various text formats, but most conveniently comes with a converter for making your own custom ebooks - and helpfully, this can be fed a load of html files, so I often decompile ebooks distributed as chm files, and then convert them into isilo books that I can read on the road, which is excellent for massive reference works like Britanica etc. These are also highly compressed, and settings and last reading position is saved per book.
The version I'm using is probably old school, but as I said, it works perfectly and I've had no reason to upgrade. Helpfully on the Blackstone, it has user assignable buttons and screen regions, so eg clicking the top 25% of the screen will page up, or the middle 25% will auto scroll etc. This makes it ideal for the Blackstone with no usable buttons.

I like mobipocket, I have used it for years, and even on my N95, but I find tapping the screen is very random, sometimes it works, sometimes it highlights some text, and sometimes I have to tap it several times to get it to change. If I use a styus, it's fine, if I use two hands, and ise my fingertip it's fine.
iSilo looks like it may do the trick though, although I didn't think it handled plain txt files?
Only problem I have with using the volume keys to change pages, is that they are not designed for repetitive use, I managed to break the switch on my N95 by using it for changing page.
I will have to investigate more I think, I just wish there was one as nice as the iPhone reader I had.
(I just wish to point I used it on an iPod touch, not an iPhone, because I hate them lol)
iSilo certainly supports plain text, a couple of other ebook styles, HTML I think, and it's own format.
I really like using it - it also has autoscroll if your hands are otherwise "occupied"!
V
Well I won't be reading *those* kinds of books
OK I have had a more in depth play with isilo, and it does the job in a buggy kind of way.
Takes a bit of messing around, and looks as though once you go into full screen you cant get out without making it look a bit messed up, so you have to restart the app, but it's certainly better for page turning than mobipocket!
Doesn't have the bells and whistles of others, but it's a free reader, and it does the job effectively.
Cheers V
Regarding the bug coming from fullscreen, I noticed that but thought it was just my old version.
The way to get around this, is instead of pressing the "ok" (back arrow) button to get out of fullscreen, press hang up instead. This will revert it to a normal size window, without the bug.

It looks nice, but is too busy for my taste.
Don't like the sense-esque weather or how busy it is as it'd muck up the UI but I like the concept, just too busy for metro.
Yup, a lot of these concepts don't take into account the amount of work the WP7 design team has put in to making the Metro UI uncluttered, simple and yet so stylish..
too busy and would look very out of place with the clean styling of the Metro UI
Looks like Android to me...
I love it - looks great and functional too.
Yes Metro UI is uncluttered, but unfortunately that means lists of white text on a black background...again and again. It's easy to use but boring to look at - reminds me of an old DOS terminal!

Did you seriously just copy "Notification Center" from iOS 5 right down to the name?
In any case, it looks good. But I'm not sure Microsoft wants to go the down-swipe route. Maybe swipe right to a pane to the left of the start screen?
Or even an extra button on the start screen to go to a Notification Hub. The App list has Search, the Home Screen can have the notification button with a number inside the bubble. I think taht would be elegant and the most unintrusive way to add it in.
In the Hub you can have Notifications and Reminders, however if you have to go to the Notification Hub to get reminders you're already somewhat failed there The OS supports Tasks and To-Dos with half-screen notifications/reminders. There's no need for that pane, IMO.
I am sort of pissed that Microsoft didn't make toasts a rolling 3D box like Apple did in iOS, though... They really need to add a bit more 3D to the OS. It's way way too flat IMO. Almost painstakingly so.
Your Skype thing bought an issue to mind. Why doesn't the message hub in Mango have a graphic or text to tell you your online status? After all, the phone does not log you on automatically when you [re]boot it up.
The music playback controls there are thoroughly unnecessary since they're easily accessible by just pressing a volume key. Waste of space.
I actually think the bubble (Notifications for Start, Search for App list in same spot) would be a better solution than a gesture. Some apps take over that top area and I'm not sure how the phone will handle it when you have UI elements up there that need to be tapped or dragged.
Looks like Android not Windows Phone!
Way to busy, Metro is an elegant yet minimalist UI. This concept looks like a breed between Android and Windows Mobile. With Nokia now contributing to the actual OS I believe the 3rd page concept found on Meego will/should make the jump (minus twitter and facebook since they're already in the People hub).

very wrong imo. A swipe down where? Lock screen? That's not very convenient, home screen? We swipe up and down to navigate the menu. The most viable option is a third table.

Ok, this may be a totally dumb question, but how the hell do I control/interact with Google Earth on my Nexus (4.0.2). I cannot seem to get it to tilt and pan etc using touch. I see no other icons or menus with control options? Am I missing something simple?
Uninstall and redownload.

Ok. I'll try that. but this was the pre-installed Earth that came on my phone. Not sure I can uninstall. will try though. It's updated itself since I got the phone so should have the latest version, but will try. thanks
Ok I uninstalled the updates to the app, but I cannot uninstall this "system app". So I disabled it, forced stop. Enabled it again and will now download updates to make it 6.1 again.
I'm not sure what I should be seeing when using this app. There are no controls.
Just go to market and search for your application on the menus, then press your app Earth and there will be an option to update.. That's what i've done.
Cheers!
I have the very latest google earth from the market. 6.1 something.
Here is a screenshot. Does this look right? how do I tilt the screen to get the 3d angle? all I can do is drag around, and rotate. I cannot tilt so I can see topography?
ARGH. Im sure its just me not knowing how to use it.
Screen shot - where are the tilt controls?

I too would like to learn how to tilt the view in Google Earth.
But I am bemused by the responses so far. Why is it necessary to uninstall and reinstall? Are you suggesting that the factory installation (with updates) is somehow broken?
Use two fingers to rotate/tilt.

Hold two fingers to the screen and instead of pinching, just slide both up or down to change viewing angle or rotate them in a circular motion around a centred point in order to spin.

Google maps works the exact same way. If you go to maps and drag 2 fingers down you will get that "3d" view. It's cool. They must be trying to get some continuity from app to app.

Although I'd agree it's not massively obvious in the app, there's always Menu > Help. Which has this to say:
To tilt your screen, touch the Look-Around icon and ensure it's enabled. To tilt up, touch the screen and move down. To tilt down, touch the screen and move up.

I am coming from the Sprint Mogul (Titan) and loved it.. then with custom roms it was a better phone.. powered windshield mount, gps software and all.. it was great..
now this my first android... and I have already started seeing the night and day difference (side from hardware.. bigger screen, faster, etc...)..
just ordered a infuse windshield mount and going to order a samsung e4gt desk cradle in a bit (waiting on an ebay offer if accepted)
what apps do you run that is making the phone enjoyable???
my list and couldnt do on the Titan...
1. Office Talk Free (Office communicator) - really nice so now i can go to the labratories and can get messages still!!!!
2. VIP Access - no more keyfob on my keychain.. just put it in my drawer...
3. Beat the Traffic
4. KeypassDroid
5. Craigslist
6. a reliable flashlight app
7. Wifi Analizer - had one on ppc but this one was way better.. even told me to change channels for performance
what do you use???
Only thing I am not thrilled with is the GPS software.. I had TomTom7, iGuidance and GarminXT... TeleNav isnt working right (triangle not on the street) and Navigation looses connection....
Fruit Ninja
I liked it before I even bought it. I just knew it was the next phone I needed.
My gut was right, and I love it completely. Even stock it's an awesome piece of hardware. Not that mine is stock at all lol.

5> Flashlight (Amazing idea and REALLY useful at times)
6> Navigate (I haven't pulled my GPS out of my glove box in a few years now)
7> Pandora
8> Sound Hound
10> Goggles
tough question to answer, but, let me put it this way; I have yet to see ANY app that didn't run perfectly, smoothly, and faster than any other phone I have owned..
Nothing is even close to this phone right now, as far as being perfect in almost every way...

5. LOUDER
6. SB Nation
7. ACS Mobile
8. Transparent XDA

What is the best GPS navigation software for the S3? Google ruined theirs when they removed street names and Maps appears to be part of the ROM because it can not be uninstalled or else I would use the previous version.

Probably. Unfortunately, I don't get my entire route until about 15 minutes into my first call. Then the route is kinda dynamic. Calls are added and removed throughout the day.

Yikes. That sounds awful. Maybe a sit down with management is in order... sounds like you have a business case for a laptop / notebook and a hot spot
+1 for telenav, most accurate I've tried.

Hehehe.... it's not all that bad. We have routers in our trucks, panasonic toughbooks and intranet access. But no internet. The calls come and go due to "load balancing". 16 of us do refrigeration in a very large area (from Williamsburg, Va to the Outer Banks, NC) so evening out the load becomes a necessity, especially if a tech gets stuck on a job that takes longer than anticipated or a tech gets a run of really, really fast calls (ie- "not-at-home" or "It's now working").
