What apps have made you like this phone? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

been reading all over the General/Accessories threads.. great stuff... im not readay to root or install roms yet... sooo
I am coming from the Sprint Mogul (Titan) and loved it.. then with custom roms it was a better phone.. powered windshield mount, gps software and all.. it was great..
now this my first android... and I have already started seeing the night and day difference (side from hardware.. bigger screen, faster, etc...)..
just ordered a infuse windshield mount and going to order a samsung e4gt desk cradle in a bit (waiting on an ebay offer if accepted)
what apps do you run that is making the phone enjoyable???
my list and couldnt do on the Titan...
1. Office Talk Free (Office communicator) - really nice so now i can go to the labratories and can get messages still!!!!
2. VIP Access - no more keyfob on my keychain.. just put it in my drawer...
3. Beat the Traffic
4. KeypassDroid
5. Craigslist
6. a reliable flashlight app
7. Wifi Analizer - had one on ppc but this one was way better.. even told me to change channels for performance
what do you use???
Only thing I am not thrilled with is the GPS software.. I had TomTom7, iGuidance and GarminXT... TeleNav isnt working right (triangle not on the street) and Navigation looses connection....

Fruit Ninja

I liked it before I even bought it. I just knew it was the next phone I needed.
My gut was right, and I love it completely. Even stock it's an awesome piece of hardware. Not that mine is stock at all lol.
I work in the hosting biz, so the stardevelop live help messenger app is very helpful for me, as well as whmcs, the high quality browsers, Go SMS Pro, and many others.

But seriously? All the games that never played on my Hero, and all the games that kinda lagged on my Evo4G. All run like melted butter on this.
That being said, I actually only game on my way home on the subway. GoogNav works great for me (if you root, you can try diff modems/kernel combos, fix that, btw), NetFlix is awesome, all the basics (gmail, calendar, talk) are also smoove as hell and easy to read, wifi-analyzer/network utility apps and things like wifikill and "Anti" are awesome, all the camera apps like vignette and camera360,...
On and on and on...
Sent from my calculator watch.

I run the same main apps I have had on my previous phons.

1> Llama (Used to be locale, but I think I like Llama better)
2> Tapatalk
3> Aldiko and iReader
4> Runkeeper
5> Flashlight (Amazing idea and REALLY useful at times)
6> Navigate (I haven't pulled my GPS out of my glove box in a few years now)
7> Pandora
8> Sound Hound
10> Goggles

tough question to answer, but, let me put it this way; I have yet to see ANY app that didn't run perfectly, smoothly, and faster than any other phone I have owned..
Nothing is even close to this phone right now, as far as being perfect in almost every way...
I've owned at least 50 phones in my life, so I know of what I speak..

Agree with above

Loved the phone straight out of the box but the wealth of apps definitely makes me love it more.
Mobile Checkbook
Beat the Traffic Plus
Key Ring
Out of Milk
Dropbox
Springpad
There's quite a few more but that's the gist of it.

I agree that besides compatibility like with games like GTA3, this phone mostly just brings speed and size to the table. That said my most used apps on it are:
1. Plume
2. Netflix
3. HBOGO
4. MIUI Music
5. LOUDER
6. SB Nation
7. ACS Mobile
8. Transparent XDA
9. Scorecenter
10. GTA3

Everyone has mentioned some very useful apps. Personally, I like checking Amazon's App Store to see what 'app of the day' they are giving away for free.

best apps/tricks on desire to beat iPhone.

Ok, we've all got mates with iPhone. And many of us have done the browser speed test etc. But what other kick ass apps or tricks are there to pee over our iPhone friends.
I'll start one. Google maps, then street view, then go into compass mode! You can look around the location without having to touch the screen! Makes iPhone users green with envy! Anyone got anymore weaponry to show of our devices specifically against iphones
Thanks

Google googles < Can you actually uninstall it??
Read a few comments where ppl had installed on their Desire, but could not uninstall.
Let me know plz, if ya can i will try that app also
I could uninstall goggles.
No problem.
show them that you can browse and connect to network folders via wireless, their Iphone can NEVER do that
Hung77, how'd you do that. It's over my head, but if you tell me that would be great.
And yeah that skymap you can get for iPhone unfortunately.
^ use ES File Explorer. (better than Astro, imo)
It is how i access shared folders on my network.
And seriously, you can't even compare crappy iPhone to the Desire.
Just for start, the screen is bigger, better and brighter. just put your Desire beside the iPhone and look at those poor slobs faces.
Other, the customization level with the Desire is something the iPhone can't even imagine to have.
Plus, just wait till wifi N and HD video comes into action.

customizable settings such as colours, how strong each factor is and how many droids
just blow lightly on the screen and see the little droids cower

iPhone does not have that, period.
Put some nice widgets on your home screen, and ask "Do you have this?"
The Desire has Android and the iPhone doesn't.

Yeah but I was meaning tangible stuff that you could demonstrate/show off! Ok another example I've used. Xscope browser with single pin zoom. Double tap with one thumb, then simply scroll right to zoom in or scroll left to zoom out! Very handy when smoking a fag or just lazy to move the other hand to grip the phone. Then watch the text get reformatted automatically!
How about Voice Search and Voice-to-Text? Actually I'm not entirely sure if iPhone has that. I tried these out on the Desire for the very first time and it's like magic.
Text-reflow in the browser? Or Flash content in the browser?
Download files from the browser that are not photos?
Attach a file to an email that's not a photo?
Multi-tasking!?
Smart-dialing?
My personal favorite: Tell your iPhone friend that his phone looks so awesome that you would want to swap your HTC Desire with him for a few hours. But insist on swapping your SIM cards because you don't want him using your minutes or whatever. That's when he'll realize there's a serious design flaw that Apple made. It's impossible to remove the SIM card on the iPhone without a tool.

Just point and hold your finger somewhere on a road. Then the address pops up, click it, and the you can click the little man in the right of the screen. And woila, street view.
I must admit it's a bit hidden from us.
It was complicated for me first time.
If you do a voice search of somewhere in newyork like say pizza hut, )iPhone also does this) you'll get your map etc,(also on iPhone but not as accurate). Then press your little man icon to get streetview ( iPhone can also do this). But once in streetview, select compass mode and you can pan left or right, and especially in new York city up and down by simply moving the phone. And iPhone CANT do that! Shouldn't matter what version you have, mines just standard.
My mates have their mouths wide open when I show them augmented reality apps.
Try showing them Layar or Wikitude
How about the basics...
Hires screen (how much/clear website can they see)?
Camera face-recognition (that pi$$es them off

or how about a fluid video player on android, there are disadvantages to android... i've come to a few in just my 2nd day of use. Besides that, I love it. My ancient 8125 plays that video just fine, no bugs, stops, glitches, freezing like my desire does. Not really a big deal as it's not a video player for me, but like stated some apps will have to be rewritten for droid. Hopefully they're not the most used. WP7 will be a big contender I believe, M$ has the funds and ready to compete. We shall see. They will surely be getting the new qualcomm dualcore lineup i'm betting.

HD2 I had borrowed for a month and they appear to me too much, with one hand can not be used
I think you should have this thread moved to Themes and Apps and search for replacements for WinMo, because I don't see a port happening in the near future.
On the other hand, I agree that android -even if it's quite modern and overall better than WinMo 6.5.3- is very immature in many ways and lacks some polished apps:
- email client
- exchange
- contact managing
- extensive weather application such as weatherpanel
- a good imdb client
- a reliable bt/wifi remote - most don't work on bt and even gmote has lots of problems on some platforms
- some other work related applications

well, I haven't said that, my point is that being winmo a lot older than android, you miss some applications which where developed over a long time and which probably will come to android, but aren't still there. The Imdb example is just to point out that even if you have 50000 apps there are some which are missing (and Imdb doesn't want official applications).
In fact if you read my post I have stressed that you should move this to themes and apps because there are some applications which are missing, not because the OS isn't good.
At the same time the email client, contact management (picture syncing issues etc) all point to the fact that android is midway between business/consumer and that it's still a bit in the working, which is completely normal.
But this is going offtopic. I just think that there is probably no way that WinMo (6 ? 7 ?) will be ported to a similar android device. And I'm of the opinion that you should just try to replace what you miss with some of the apps you find in the market.
You can keep Windows mobile away from my desire!

I never said I wanted windows mobile anymore Sir, or I wouldn't have bought a desire hah. I said I enjoyed it besides the video player, you really don't have to defend the OS or device, I like it. I just would like a fluid video player that can play all my files standard fast with no freezing or stuttering. Any recommendations from the marketplace?
Did you convert to some another format with lower quality as well right? The 4 i've players used so far either don't recognize or will play with stuttering, ones i've used so far wouldn't even play my standard entourage rips, which aren't very high quality as is.

There's nothing generally wrong with any of the 3rd party players so long as they stick to natively supported codecs. In the case of video, this is really just H264 (see here).
I rather suspect that the DivX support in Samsung and LG phones rely on an actual native application and/or libraries rather than an interpreted java application.

Google really screwed with games
Why don't all games use open GL and why do we have to get a specific version for each terminal, that sucks!
Google shouldn't allow things such as Tegra only games, it's a really bad thing for Android.

How is it a bad thing for Android for game developers to be able to push the most (graphically and performance) for each specific model?
Sent from my GT-I9100
Games should be like those on PC: only one version and you apply the different settings according to your hardware.
On Android it's crazy, it's as if on PC, devellopers would have to release a different version of their games for each different type of graphic card or processor or memory and wouldn't use Direct X, that would be really stupid!
I really despise Tegra only games, if the phone isn't powerfull enough to run the game at full specs, just let the user lower the settings so we can still enjoy the game (much better than no game at all).

Agreed, I read some where that the dev of this app has actually been trying to get Ziggy to do more but you know MS and their damned restricted API's. I'n my opinion they need to hire this guy.
The screenshots look cool. I may dl it again.
I tried it before, and 90% of the time the response was just "would you like to do a websearch for that" or whatever it says.
I could save myself time and a couple steps by just voice-searching Bing.

I know I hardly use it my self, I'll use it from time to time to entertain my self for a few laughs but it's great to see it evolve. You have to give it to the dev of the app; he has to improve it even with the MS restrictions.
I really don't like it when developers use a panorama design and put "Settings" as a screen to swipe to. They really should put the settings in the app bar. If he only wants the microphone icon in the app bar then add the settings to the "more" 2 dots part.
Otherwise I'm looking forward to this update!

LOL, I think he did it that way because people asked him to make it more metrofied.
Much better design and definitely if Microsoft know what they doing, they would hire this dude. These are people that are ready to dedicate their full time to Windows Phone.

Then he should look closely at how MS design their panorama apps. Settings are always in the app bar in People hub, messaging, xbox live hub, calender etc
Generally when a user swipes along a panoramic screen its to see more content. Settings isn't more content. Most users don't even fiddle with it each time they launch the app unless they need to change something, so therefore dedicating an entire panoramic screen to it is bad design and not metro.
That is my opinion

+1
It's the case with so many major app developers. It's the mindset from other OSes. That brings us to badly developed apps argument. There is always an app for what we need, if not official, a client - majority of the times. But most apps are so horribly metrofied that it's mortifying. Making apps esp free ones, is an amazing task! But then full hearted approach to match the metro concept will streamline an user's experience and they will love your app more. Else someone too choosy about how his phone looks might find distasteful breaks in his streamline experience. Most WP users gotta be choosy with UI, why else would you love this new UI so much!?
May be people here won't agree, but this is what I generally consider as a factor whether any particular app will stay on my WP. In my WM and Android days, that wasn't an issue because OS UI was ugly anyway. But can't let the UI experience be ruined just because I want some functionality of an app that I might only use once a week or once a month!
Oh this looks so much better. I'm not a big fan of how it looks right now.
I do agree with previous comments about settings. A whole screen to swipe to is uneccessary. Put it in the bar.
I can agree Ziggy looks dirty. I hope developer ask some designers to help him make ui better.
Function over finesse. It's more important to get the core working well, than to tweak the look and feel.
For the most part the real use is a 1 button deal. Make it listen. Make it stop and process.
The app without a function update was only a cool concept, but not much worked properly. Since it is a 1 person team, I am glad the focus is on getting it to function properly.
Once the guts are working properly, it can be delivered. Then, we will have a great functional app while the user interface tweaks are done. Then we will have a superb app.

I installed it a couple of months ago on my S3. It is definitely cool, but not without issues. Some of the UI is difficult to navigate - seems like it needs a bit more refinement and optimization for a touchscreen. The bigger issue was that even while idle, XBMC will max out cpu. Phone gets screaming hot, and battery plummets faster than I've ever seen with this phone. Perhaps that issue has been fixed in the most current version.

I've never used it.
But XBMC is HUGE in the Home Theater PC (HTPC) world.
So I'd imagine that development will continue pretty well in the Android world as well.
I use JRiver Media Center for all my HTPC music & video stuff. I know JRiver has some Android sort of plugin but I haven't delved into that yet.
I had this and navi x on my apple tv that I used for regular tv for 2 years. I'm more of a navi guy that's what I have on my s3 now.

The newest version of xbmc has fixed a lot of the early bugs. I have it running flawless w/ navix, blue cop and a couple other repos. Takes about 3 mins to set up once you have all the zip files. XBMC in my opinion is by far the best free media app.

really? first time you hear about XBMC? its ok!
XBMC is like very big..., no wait its huge on linux, IOS, windows, raspberry pi, apple tv and htpc, or anything that have a CPU,hdd, ram.
it cuts the cord to cable or dish, hence your wallet likes it. personally i have it on my GNU/linux pc and my apple tv2. but i dont like the idea of watching shows or movies on my mobile computer (GS3) I hope you enjoy XBMC on Android. its good to have choices

Do you use it for music management?
I'm in the market for a music management app for my computer & phone. That also lets me listen to music and watch my HD recordings on my HTPC.
Something that will let me sync playlists and such, as well as play the music.
MediaMonkey has good reviews. But it doesn't do some of the HTPC side of things that I want.
I have JRiver Media Center but it's a PITA to figure out. And there isn't a 100% solution for Android there yet. Just a little gizmo app.
Nevermind I figured it out. It's been a while since my apple tv but u finally have navi x the way it's supposed to be on my s3 I can finally delete amo navi x
