Need to figure out how to get contacts back on my phone - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hey all,
So I've had my Tilt2 for a couple months now, and I've been flashing it almost as long but recently I've run into the problem that from searching (WOO!) I can see a lot of other people have had: ActiveSync will not connect with my phone. It charges via the computer but WMDC/ActiveSync do not detect any phone is connected. I've tried two cords on three computers but have had no luck. Unfortunately, I hard reset (in an effort to fix this) the phone and all my contacts are of course gone and thanks to the fact that I only back up messages/call history with PIM backup, the only back up of my contacts is on my computer in Outlook. I can function without being able to resync outlook calendar/tasks/notes to my phone, but I have way too many contacts to add by hand so I need another solution. In addition, I bought the phone refurbed from AT&T as my upgrade, and I think the refurb warranty has ended and I'm leaving the country for the summer in two weeks so I'd rather not spend those two weeks waiting for an HTC engineer to replace the USB port (which from searching, seems to be the issue). Please help me find some other way to get my contacts from Outlook to my phone. THANKS

I think the easiest solution in your case right now, is to setup phone-to-PC syncing via bluetooth. If your PC doesn't already have bluetooth built-in, you can get an adapter for $15 or less that will be all you need. Once you have that, your phone can connect to the PC that way, and do all the regular sync functions (like restoring your contacts!) that you could do through the USB connection.
Let us know (or PM me) if you need help finding an adapter or getting it setup.

Two things: 1) will syncing that way work if I don't have an already established partnership with my PC? I uninstalled & reinstalled WMDC & tried to remove all possible partnerships because those were suggestions on other threads.
2) somewhat unrelated I just found out that I bought the phone 83 days ago, which puts it within ATT's refurb warranty period (by a week) so I am considering trying to get it replaced, but do I need to reflash it to ATT's rom in order to do so? I.e.: does having a different ROM on the device violate the TOS?

Did you try a different rom? Task 29 and then flash another rom. Then you can make sure its not rom related.

Doesnt make sense.. if the phone wont connect to active sync how can he flash a rom?
Edit: Ah wait.. I forgot you can flash from your SD card
Double Edit: If you CAN flash it via your PC then it is connecting and maybe you just dont have a setting set up right on your phone to synce when active sync is on. When you connect it to your computer does that screen come on asking if you want to use activesync, hard drive or internet sharing?
All in all.. bluetooth might be your best bet instead of ripping apart the phone to replace the usb port. Especially if you cant do anything else. Try a hard resetting AGAIN first though and see if it syncs after that

1) That's a good question...I believe it will, but haven't tested it that way myself
2) Yes, flashing a custom ROM technically voids the warranty, but flashing back to the stock rom AND a stock SPL should get around that no problem (many have reported they still received warranty service by doing that)

I did flash from my SD card, but can I run Task 29 from it & then subsequently flash from it?
In response to the bluetooth suggestions, that isn't working either because from what I can tell, I do in fact, need to have an already established wired connection to make it work. So at this point I need to flash stock roms/radio/SPL to return this puppy to ATT. on that note: I found the stock ROM at http://www.htc.com/us/support/tilt-2-att/downloads/ but where do I get the normal SPL/which radio came with it (or does that part not even matter)?

Nevermind, turns out you can find the SPL to use in the file I downloaded from the HTC website above. Problem solved, calling ATT today to get this replaced. Just thought I'd write my solution down here so that anyone else with a similar problem can see how I figured it out. THANKS FOR THE HELP!

USB Sync not working, Charge only

I am trying to upload a new ROM to my phone but i am having problems with it being recognised by my PC.
Firewall is switched off on my PC.
USB to PC settings on phone set to prompt me and default to ActiveSync.
PC not finding the Memory Card also as a drive.
Hard-Reset also performed with no joy.
Nothing is happening however other than charging. This is the same on all PC's i have tried.
Any ideas how i can get it working??

If you find a solution, tell me!
Mine won't sync either, no matter what I try, so I've resorted to using a BT USB for syncing/file transfer. I have to flash via SD card and won't be able to use Task29 until it's set up to work via SD card either.

You can enter bootloader and then plug in the usb. This way you don't need to sync with active sync Task29 runs this way.

Nope, that won't work for me. When I enter the bootloader, it says 'serial' in the white portion at the bottom instead of 'usb'. No amount of hard resets clears this up for me.
Thanks, though.

There's good news and bad...
I had this problem, the good news is that I think it's fixed now, the bad news is it involve a trip to HTC. I flashed back to stock and still had the problem, called HTC who agreed it was probably a h/w fault, they piucked it up, repaired it and it's in a UPS van on it's way back to me as I type.
Until it comes back I can't confirm they really have repaired it, or what they've done to fix it.

Thanks so much, Gordon. Please let me know how it worked out for you and what costs were involved.
I'm sure, at some point, I will have to bite the bullet and get mine fixed as well.

I have the same problem.
After all, I find that the USB port of the phone is bad, i.e. some pins are brocken.
After changing the USB port, I solved the problem.

Just to make sure, did you set Activesync to use the slower method? When I upgraded my ROM I had to use the slow method in order for my Windows 7 to see the new ROM.
guys i have the same prob and i bought it from USA unlocked Stock Asian Rom and Now i am in Pakistan.I had some major issues with it.It just stopped syncing one day.Have tried everything. The battery usage also increased dramatically(it dies in 10 hrs after a full recharge)I thought it was a virus but now i think its hardware.I think i'll send it for warranty claim.
I just went through this on my VZW TP2. A month ago it began syncing slowly or not at all, very sporadic, and after messing with it for two hours it began working again. I tried everything except a hard-reset, including reinstalling ActiveSync, changing cables, etc. It happened again earlier in the week and an hour with HTC on the phone couldn't revive it. I called VZW and had a new phone in two days, and we're now up and running again.
I tried BT sync at one time but didn't like having to click multiple times to get it going every time I got within range. There doesn't seem to be a way to have it sync automatically or with one button.
I have the Tmo TP2 and SAME issue, I luckily am getting a new one from Tmo, but I am really starting to think something more is going on here........... I am not convinced ALL OF US, even a lot on PPC geeks, same exact issue? different carriers? come on........... I am glad I am getting a new one, but I would really love to know the root cause of this. IT SEEMS VERY VERY VERY MUCH LIKE THE "TRANSFER DATA" option if "turned off" (if you will), not a physical hardware failure. Kinda like you can turn that option off in windows to not allow USB storage devices to connect, you can still connect other devices (mice, keyboards) or charge things (like our phone) but the computer will NOT see it there at all!!! I really think something like that is happening IN our phones!!! hundreds of us bend the same pin(s). Too wierd.
I hade the same problem!
After trying everything I finally opened up the phone. In the phone I found some dust particles on the usb pins on the board, I cleaned it up and now the sync works again.
NO Sync with Windows 7
I have the same issue with my Win 7 machine...... PC does not even see the Phone at all. Plug it into my Windows XP machine and it's perfect, connects everytime, using the same cable. i have tried everything i can find on the internet and multipal forums, still no Joy! Works great on Win xp, so i think it is a problem with win 7 drivers.....
Still searching for an answer........
Oh, by the way it was working for months, just stopped one day....i even wiped out my pc and reloaded it, no Joy!
I'm starting to have the same issues on my AT&T Tilt 2 but sporadically. Every now and then I lose the phone in MS activesync. I have to delicately place the phone on the table and gently insert the USB cable into the back of the phone in order for it to sync up with my PC. If I move any of the cables or phone, it will drop the connection. I tied several different cables and PC's so I ruled that out. The problem seems to be the USB port on the phone.
Its been almost a year since I've had this phone so I want to get that fixed. If I were to call AT&T and inform them of this would they replace the phone or would they fix the problem with the port and send me the phone back?

I'm not sure what your warranty is from AT&T, but HTC normally has a 15 month warranty on the device. Go through AT&T if you can first. The carriers will normally ship you a replacement device before you send yours in. HTC's repair process is generally very lengthy as they actually repair your device and then send it back to you rather than shipping you a refurbished unit like carriers normally do.
As far as it not connecting, try a different connection method like BirdieSync and Thunderbird. I use this combo on my PC (W7 Pro x64), and it works wonderfully every time.

Wireless Sync won't trigger?

Despite my efforts, my DVP just won't sync. I can leave it alone for a half-hour, plugged into the wall, not running anything, but it just won't sync unless I plug it in.
I can't figure out why. I have all the exceptions enabled in my firewall, I tried disabling my firewall, and that didn't work. I even reinstalled Zune, and I've restarted my PC more times than I can remember. I don't get an error message, the wireless sync wizard takes about two seconds to run through, and nothing. No explanation, no error messages, nothing.
I'm starting to worry that this phone--a replacement--just doesn't "understand" when it's idle and supposed to sync. Has anyone else faced this problem?
I'm away from my PC right now so I can't tell you for sure, but I think there's a setting inside Zune where you have to tick off Wireless Sync. Have you already done that? (I'm only asking because you said you reinstalled Zune which probably reset your settings).

Aside from "Wireless Sync", which you use to set it up in the first place, I don't see any options in the Zune software that deal with it.
To set up wireless sync
If you don't want to physically connect your phone to your computer every time you need to sync, you can set up your phone to automatically sync with your computer over your home Wi-Fi network.
Connect your phone to your PC using the USB cable that came with your phone.
In the Zune software, click Settings > Phone > Wireless Sync.
Follow the on-screen instructions in the Zune software.

i think the OGCF is referring to this.

In that case, I've done that a dozen times. No effect though.
It's as though my phone never idles, but I know it does, because the screen shuts off, and nothing is playing in the background.
EDIT: Maybe this is a battery issue--apparently, you need to be at at least half battery strength to initiate syncing (in addition to not touching the phone and running on the adapter). Since I haven't taken my phone out recently, the battery might need to drain, then charge back to half. Or something, I have no idea.
i know these are gonna sound like baby steps but here goes...
after doing that wireless sync setup above, enable wifi and make sure you can connect to the network fine.
connect the phone to power so that wifi stays on, and then close zune on the desktop. leave your phone for a while and see if zune on the desktop starts on it's own within 15 minutes. if it does, that means your computer and phone are communicating with each other fine.
if not, the problem could lie in either the phone, the computer, or the router. i know some routers offer wifi isolation, where devices over wifi don't see other devices. this may or may not be the issue. it could also be firewall related (not just your computer, but router as well).
these are a few things you can investigate which will help elimiate some issues. if you have another router (hopefully a different branded one), i would give that a go as well to see if this would get around the issue.

I appreciate any advice. I spent the better part of 6 hours today (thankfully, I wasn't doing anything else) trying to get this to work with Zune Tech Support before the guy gave up and told me he'd call again tomorrow.
So, closing the Zune software (not terminating it in the task manager or anything, but closing it) is instrumental to this? That could be it.
I'll try all these steps. I had no trouble getting my first DVP to sync (kind of funny, as I returned it due to crashing). I'll then go about checking the router--except I've searched around, and haven't seen any posts about ports on the router (I have an E1000, pretty typical router) anywhere, just people talking about firewall issues. I doubt it's the PC or the router, in any case, because I was able to do it previously.
EDIT: Well, leaving the Zune client closed did not change anything. I guess I'll try another router next, an old DIR-615. Of all the complaints about WP7 syncing on the internet, practically none of them mention routers, and only a few mention firewalls--and usually not Windows Firewalls. So that's mostly a dead end.
yea it most likely is, but i'd give it a try. wireless sync is awesome and i use it all the time, never connect the cable anymore, so i know how much you want it. if all else fails... try a hard reset on the phone and if that doesn't work either, return the device for another?
i know they are the worst case scenarios, but they are possibly the last two that will fix it.
you said this is a replacement device. Did the previous dvp sync over WIFI?
Sorry, but those devices seem to be really buggy.
Yeah...funny thing, as I mentioned, this phone has been surprisingly crash-free (almost a week, with one crash, and that might have just been me being impatient) compared to the first one I got. It would suck to have to replace it because the wireless sync option basically died (it did seem to be working for a time, now it's completely "given up") and get a crashier replacement (though that's somewhat unlikely).
I'll try a hard reset--no harm--and when that presumably doesn't work, I'll try another router (though that's pretty bad, since my current router was hardly cheap and it was a much needed upgrade from a 4-year-old earlier model). Then go back to pestering the Zune tech people again. And I guess I can get a replacement if neither of those work.
Additionally, I'm almost entirely certain that it doesn't require the Zune software be closed (mostly because I remember wireless syncing happening while the Zune client was still opened). In fact, it might be the other way around.

You don't know the half of it, though this wasn't actually a replacement--I got a full refund on my original one and ordered a replacement so I could start fresh on the refund. And as I mentioned, it did--though it crashed constantly, unlike this one, which doesn't crash at all.
no need to keep zune closed anymore. it was just a test to see if zune triggures or not, but as we can see it doesn't.
Well, I apparently exhausted all the options of the Zune Tech Support team--it took quite a few hours--so the only recourse is to get a replacement.
I just hope I'm not given a refurbished model--I'd rather try my luck with another return then, frankly, since this model was nice and crash-free.
sucks. guessing you also exhausted all the suggestions i gave, so yes, new phone is the best way to go. make sure on zune desktop you "forget" all the past phones before syncing (just to clear out any cobwebs).

No kidding, definitely scrub it clean and set it to forget. The Dell Tech Rep promised me a new one, so...if I don't get it, I have grounds to complain, heh.
lol definitely. let us know how it goes.
i'm not sure why you would want to replace the phone. is it really a big deal if wireless sync isn't working?
Seems like too much hassle for too little reward, but hey if you want it that badly then go for it.

...yeah, it is. I don't know about you, but I leave my phone charger in the wall near my clock and bed, where I've always kept my phone. My computer is not in the same area, and the cable is quite short.
WP7 all feature the ability that, if left on their chargers, will sync--in effect. The "hassle" is already over--namely, trying to fix the problem. Actually calling in for the replacement took all of 6 minutes, at the most, and I get to keep my phone until a suitable replacement comes.
I'd like it if it wasn't problem, but I'd prefer to have the feature over not having it.
Well, my replacement came in....and it's not syncing either.
Basically, it's the same as before. Wireless Sync simply won't trigger. It doesn't try and fail, it just doesn't sync at all. As though someone's keeping the phone from going idle, or the process never worked in the first place.
On the bright side, there was probably nothing wrong with the second phone I got. On the down side, only the first phone I had--which I returned--every wireless synced properly (and it did it without me even knowing it was an option to begin with).
No idea what's wrong. Calling Zune Support mostly served as a way to suck up all my monthly minutes, so I'm pretty much on my own, I suspect.

I had the same problem with my HD7, the first month wireless sync worked perfectly. But since January it is not syncing anymore. Setting it on the laptop of my dad wireless sync worked again. So it seems to be something on my own laptop.
It's a mystery.
I'm going to try another new router, and see if that makes a difference at all. If that works, I'll have to sell my E1000 for cheap, unfortunately, but if it actually fixes the problem, I can live with that.
In any case, I need to return one phone to Dell, and as it stands, I think I'd keep my no. 2 if the no. 3 makes no clear change.

USB Media mode Issues

Hey there XDA, ive been having an issue with my GSII T989 that i hope you can help me with.
I originally got the phone off ebay used as a replacement for my T499 that had a broken loudspeaker (couldnt hear calls or use alarm)
It came with the stock TMO version of 4.1.2. Im on the monthly 4G plan with TMO and my old phone didnt have any way to stop tethering so i was able to use it freely. I still do not feel it necessary that i should have to give TMO an extra $15 per month to use this feature, so naturally i avoided it as much as possible. in 4.1.2 the "tethering provision" app was disable-able, so i Initially planned to keep that on the phone, however the phone kept getting the update to the newest software pushed to it and i couldnt get the notification to go away. rather than upgrade to another rom that would inhibit tethering, i decided to put a custom rom on it.
After looking over a few, i decided to go with AOKP. at this point the phone was fully functional. I was able to copy all the related files to the phone over USB. I initially loaded the CWRM 4.0.4.3 and that went smoothly
of course when i attempted to load AOKP i hit a roadblock as i had not updated the Radio. i got the radio and copied the file over to the phone while it was in recovery mode, and then loaded the rom up. everything seemed to be great, until a few days later.
I tried plugging my phone into my PC to copy a photograph off of it to post online, and it wouldn't work. Initially i figured it might have been a problem with the cable i was using. Since it was used, the phone came with an off-brand cable. I tried my OE cable for my T499, still nothing.
eventually i went and enabled "USB debugging mode" in developer options, and then it worked! I thought that seemed really weird, but at least i could still get into it.
that was a few weeks ago. Now i have been thinking about trying another rom, and now i cannot get the USB media mode to work on my phone at all, on any of my PCs, whether in normal, USB Debug, or in recovery mode. I even tried converting to the touch version of CWRM to see if something was wrong with that, and it still wont connect. The PC detects the phone but it refuses to show the storage. when i Enable USB debugging mode, it connects and shows the media device, but promptly disconnects again a few seconds later for no apparent reason. It even did this with Kies running. Everything else on the phone works as it should and it has no trouble charging from a wall jack or from the usb cable.
If you guys could help that would be great

I hope you've meant 6.0.4.3 CWM instead of 4.0.4.3. That's old-old-old-old-old, and 99% likely to not work with today's ROMs and etc. What I would do is try to setup ADB on your computer and use that to push/pull files from your phone for in cases like this where the phone or computer doesn't like MTP. I highly recommend using this guide to setup ADB if you're going that route.
Edit: Spelling and wording to make more relevant (Skimmed through and missed the point of the last paragraph).

[Q] Data connection issues.

I bought my s3 in March of this year, and everything was working just fine until May. It's an awsome phone and I love it. However, since May, my phone no longer connects to 4g EVER and the 3g comes and goes and never stays connected for more than 10 minutes while in use. I've NEVER even come CLOSE to reaching my plans provided 2.5GB of data, so I know that's not the issue. The phone has never been dropped, or wet, as I am always very delicate with my phones. I have never placed it too close to the TV...
I contacted Boost mobile. They gave me a long list of things to try. I have tried EVERYTHING: making sure the mobile networks is checked, preferred network setting CDMA/LTE, soft reset, clear browser cache, update PRL, profile update, software update, firmware update, ##72786#, and even did a factory reset. Nothing helped. Boost said there was nothing else they could do for me, and that I needed to contact samsung.
Samsung said the only way for them to find the problem is for me to send them my phone, and wait 2 to 4 weeks for them to revise it and send it back. That's not an option as I need my phone monday through friday for my job. (UPDATE: I got so irritated with this problem that I went ahead and bought an LG Volt, since I didn't have the money to buy another galaxy. It's nice but I don't like it as much. I'm still afraid to send the Galaxy into Samsung. They have expressed to me that if they can't find an issue(just my luck), or if they find the issue to be my fault(IE I put the phone too close to a credit card magnet or some dumb crap like that), then they will charge me not only for the parts and labor, but for the return shipping... and we all know that they'll charge me way more than the phone is worth.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if there's anyway to fix it without having to send my phone in to samsung? I have been told, also, that I could try reflashing the phone to it's original firmware and software, but I am afraid of screwing the phone up since I've never done anything like that before.
Thanks!
First off, Welcome to the forms.
Secondly, you came to the right place. On this form you'll find crazy people like me who like to do custom flashing updating all the technical stuff. And then there's section of the form where people just want a normal phone and just want the basic troubleshooting tips. As with any user will have to search through the forms because there's a high likely chance that someone already has or had your issue just at different time.
There could be multiple reasons as to what you're experiencing. First off I think you should confirm and verify that you will do live in a good 3G or 4G location so that any further test can be actually validated. Secondly if you're not being able to connect to data it seems that you need to reactivate your phone by getting back on the boost/Sprint network. A full factory restore with data wipe and then updating over the air with firmware, PRL, reboot should work. Make sure you are set to use LET, under mobile data, and that you have enabled Automatic connections to the tower. Reactivate the phone again, if still not connected, reboot.
If you're still not having connection and I think you probably need to do a reflash via ODIN. This is pretty much what Samsung would do I'm except they have their own proprietary tools. Here on XDA we just have great developers.
Good luck.
Thanks button if this helped.

You could definitely flash the stock ROM and kernel to your phone via ODIN. However, the safest and most foolproof way to do this would be to download Samsung's KIES software here: http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP
Once in KIES, you would plug in your phone to the USB port and, if needed, download any drivers for your phone. Then, you would follow this path: Tools --> Firmware Upgrade and Initilisation. This will give you a warning that you will lose all your stored data on the phone, and will offer you to make a backup -- a very limited backup -- of information on your phone. If you don't have any worthwhile information, I'd skip the backup and go right to stock ROM restore.
Hope this helps.
tO rcatank, I have already done all of those things. I have a new phone (which I don't like as much) that is connected to 4g almost always.

I download KIES onto my computer or the phone? The phone already has something called "KIES Air" on it, is that the same thing? And then one I download the KIES software and hook up my phone and go through the prompts you've provided, it does the rest itself?

No, Kies Air is not the same thing. To do a stock restore, you have to hook it up to Kies on your PC via USB. Follow the steps I showed you, follow the steps on the screen, and Kies will take care of the rest.

Ok, thanks very much! One more question though... does it matter that the galaxy is no longer activated? I mean, obviously to test it to see if it works I'd have to re-activate it. But for this process, does it need to be activated?

Without it being activated, I don't think you'll be able to receive data of any kind. In order to test 4G capabilities, you are probably going to need to reactivate.
But, to restore it via Kies, no activation is necessary.

[Q] NEED HELP!!! apache has ruined me

I recently read a post, I don't know where now, but it had to do with a hidden Trojan/malware. That was started in 2013... After reading, thinking back to when this really started affecting me Feb,26, 2015. I noticed some strange things mentioned in my service log from around that date. The post mentioned how it places a high tracker in some obscure app. Unfortunately I got the bug, BAD!!! So not knowing about this until I made it worse by plugging my phone into my computer... I'm sure you can figure out the rest. My everything is screwed now. My HTC one m7, is the only device I can use period, now. I tried to root, and couldn't. Then downloaded another root checker, and it said my device was already rooted. Is there anything I can do(on my knees begging). This has to be the worst inter-web experience ever. Any and all ideas, advice, similar problems, links, and time are greatly appreciated. Thank you
are you asking for help with the phone or your pc?

My phone is the only thing I can use... I have to install Windows again on my lap top... I have a new disc and what not. I'm just worried that he'll just take that over as well.. so phone, but I could use some tips in how to do it for the pc as well and if I'll ever be able to get my email. With my last ten years if web activity, Xbox one and everything else I had.... So pissed
for the phone, i recommend an ruu. in case that bug is somewhere on the phone waiting for another PC victim. It sucks that you will lose everything but its hard to figure out what file is infected and if you restore any file after format you run the chance of it happening again
as for the pc. if you can reboot to safe mode you can use a tool called Combofix. it will sometimes fix problems due to worms or viruses. I've used it many of times i cant fix it manually.
