[Q] Data connection issues. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I bought my s3 in March of this year, and everything was working just fine until May. It's an awsome phone and I love it. However, since May, my phone no longer connects to 4g EVER and the 3g comes and goes and never stays connected for more than 10 minutes while in use. I've NEVER even come CLOSE to reaching my plans provided 2.5GB of data, so I know that's not the issue. The phone has never been dropped, or wet, as I am always very delicate with my phones. I have never placed it too close to the TV...
I contacted Boost mobile. They gave me a long list of things to try. I have tried EVERYTHING: making sure the mobile networks is checked, preferred network setting CDMA/LTE, soft reset, clear browser cache, update PRL, profile update, software update, firmware update, ##72786#, and even did a factory reset. Nothing helped. Boost said there was nothing else they could do for me, and that I needed to contact samsung.
Samsung said the only way for them to find the problem is for me to send them my phone, and wait 2 to 4 weeks for them to revise it and send it back. That's not an option as I need my phone monday through friday for my job. (UPDATE: I got so irritated with this problem that I went ahead and bought an LG Volt, since I didn't have the money to buy another galaxy. It's nice but I don't like it as much. I'm still afraid to send the Galaxy into Samsung. They have expressed to me that if they can't find an issue(just my luck), or if they find the issue to be my fault(IE I put the phone too close to a credit card magnet or some dumb crap like that), then they will charge me not only for the parts and labor, but for the return shipping... and we all know that they'll charge me way more than the phone is worth.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if there's anyway to fix it without having to send my phone in to samsung? I have been told, also, that I could try reflashing the phone to it's original firmware and software, but I am afraid of screwing the phone up since I've never done anything like that before.
Thanks!

First off, Welcome to the forms.
Secondly, you came to the right place. On this form you'll find crazy people like me who like to do custom flashing updating all the technical stuff. And then there's section of the form where people just want a normal phone and just want the basic troubleshooting tips. As with any user will have to search through the forms because there's a high likely chance that someone already has or had your issue just at different time.
There could be multiple reasons as to what you're experiencing. First off I think you should confirm and verify that you will do live in a good 3G or 4G location so that any further test can be actually validated. Secondly if you're not being able to connect to data it seems that you need to reactivate your phone by getting back on the boost/Sprint network. A full factory restore with data wipe and then updating over the air with firmware, PRL, reboot should work. Make sure you are set to use LET, under mobile data, and that you have enabled Automatic connections to the tower. Reactivate the phone again, if still not connected, reboot.
If you're still not having connection and I think you probably need to do a reflash via ODIN. This is pretty much what Samsung would do I'm except they have their own proprietary tools. Here on XDA we just have great developers.
Good luck.
Thanks button if this helped.

You could definitely flash the stock ROM and kernel to your phone via ODIN. However, the safest and most foolproof way to do this would be to download Samsung's KIES software here: http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP
Once in KIES, you would plug in your phone to the USB port and, if needed, download any drivers for your phone. Then, you would follow this path: Tools --> Firmware Upgrade and Initilisation. This will give you a warning that you will lose all your stored data on the phone, and will offer you to make a backup -- a very limited backup -- of information on your phone. If you don't have any worthwhile information, I'd skip the backup and go right to stock ROM restore.
Hope this helps.

tO rcatank, I have already done all of those things. I have a new phone (which I don't like as much) that is connected to 4g almost always.

I download KIES onto my computer or the phone? The phone already has something called "KIES Air" on it, is that the same thing? And then one I download the KIES software and hook up my phone and go through the prompts you've provided, it does the rest itself?

No, Kies Air is not the same thing. To do a stock restore, you have to hook it up to Kies on your PC via USB. Follow the steps I showed you, follow the steps on the screen, and Kies will take care of the rest.

Ok, thanks very much! One more question though... does it matter that the galaxy is no longer activated? I mean, obviously to test it to see if it works I'd have to re-activate it. But for this process, does it need to be activated?

Without it being activated, I don't think you'll be able to receive data of any kind. In order to test 4G capabilities, you are probably going to need to reactivate.
But, to restore it via Kies, no activation is necessary.

Need to figure out how to get contacts back on my phone

Hey all,
So I've had my Tilt2 for a couple months now, and I've been flashing it almost as long but recently I've run into the problem that from searching (WOO!) I can see a lot of other people have had: ActiveSync will not connect with my phone. It charges via the computer but WMDC/ActiveSync do not detect any phone is connected. I've tried two cords on three computers but have had no luck. Unfortunately, I hard reset (in an effort to fix this) the phone and all my contacts are of course gone and thanks to the fact that I only back up messages/call history with PIM backup, the only back up of my contacts is on my computer in Outlook. I can function without being able to resync outlook calendar/tasks/notes to my phone, but I have way too many contacts to add by hand so I need another solution. In addition, I bought the phone refurbed from AT&T as my upgrade, and I think the refurb warranty has ended and I'm leaving the country for the summer in two weeks so I'd rather not spend those two weeks waiting for an HTC engineer to replace the USB port (which from searching, seems to be the issue). Please help me find some other way to get my contacts from Outlook to my phone. THANKS

I think the easiest solution in your case right now, is to setup phone-to-PC syncing via bluetooth. If your PC doesn't already have bluetooth built-in, you can get an adapter for $15 or less that will be all you need. Once you have that, your phone can connect to the PC that way, and do all the regular sync functions (like restoring your contacts!) that you could do through the USB connection.
Let us know (or PM me) if you need help finding an adapter or getting it setup.

Two things: 1) will syncing that way work if I don't have an already established partnership with my PC? I uninstalled & reinstalled WMDC & tried to remove all possible partnerships because those were suggestions on other threads.
2) somewhat unrelated I just found out that I bought the phone 83 days ago, which puts it within ATT's refurb warranty period (by a week) so I am considering trying to get it replaced, but do I need to reflash it to ATT's rom in order to do so? I.e.: does having a different ROM on the device violate the TOS?
Did you try a different rom? Task 29 and then flash another rom. Then you can make sure its not rom related.

Doesnt make sense.. if the phone wont connect to active sync how can he flash a rom?
Edit: Ah wait.. I forgot you can flash from your SD card
Double Edit: If you CAN flash it via your PC then it is connecting and maybe you just dont have a setting set up right on your phone to synce when active sync is on. When you connect it to your computer does that screen come on asking if you want to use activesync, hard drive or internet sharing?
All in all.. bluetooth might be your best bet instead of ripping apart the phone to replace the usb port. Especially if you cant do anything else. Try a hard resetting AGAIN first though and see if it syncs after that

1) That's a good question...I believe it will, but haven't tested it that way myself
2) Yes, flashing a custom ROM technically voids the warranty, but flashing back to the stock rom AND a stock SPL should get around that no problem (many have reported they still received warranty service by doing that)

I did flash from my SD card, but can I run Task 29 from it & then subsequently flash from it?
In response to the bluetooth suggestions, that isn't working either because from what I can tell, I do in fact, need to have an already established wired connection to make it work. So at this point I need to flash stock roms/radio/SPL to return this puppy to ATT. on that note: I found the stock ROM at http://www.htc.com/us/support/tilt-2-att/downloads/ but where do I get the normal SPL/which radio came with it (or does that part not even matter)?

Nevermind, turns out you can find the SPL to use in the file I downloaded from the HTC website above. Problem solved, calling ATT today to get this replaced. Just thought I'd write my solution down here so that anyone else with a similar problem can see how I figured it out. THANKS FOR THE HELP!

What would you do?

Ok guys, been a long battle. I spent a combined four and a half hours on the phone with sprint yesterday morning. We did soft resets, hard resets. We checked ESN and other numbers I didn't know existed. We checked towers as well.
And after all this, I still have issues making calls. When I go to make a call at home, it automatically disconnects even though I have full bars and my data is working. I also cannot receive calls, as everyone texts me saying that it is going straight to voice mail. I only really go three places.(work, home, gf's place) The problem occurs at both my place and work. However, it doesn't seem to happen when I am on the road, and it only happens sometimes at my gf's.
I took the phone to Sprint with a ticket number given to me by a second tier manager? The sprint store rebooted my phone a few times, tried to make a few calls. Of course it works. So their rule is, if they cannot replicate the problem, they cannot help.
So I guess I am asking what you guys would do. The only two option I see are:
1. Buy a used EVO and finish out my contract(14months) hoping nothing goes wrong with it.
2. Take the early penalty, close my account and go to Verizon like the rest of my friends whose GPS's and calling "just work".
I would hate to leave sprint cause they have the best unlimited deal out there. But this is the second "top of the line" phone I have bought with them that has been a disaster. And both of them seemed to work flawlessly for the first couple months I had them.
By the way, I am on stock EC05, and I have been ever since it EC05 came out. I am not rooted or anything. It was working fine till about Friday.
Do you have TEP?
Wow, try taking out the sd card and use the phone to make a call. SD cards can make the phone do some funky things. If that works; then put it back in, connect the phone to your computer, copy all the contents to your computer; format the sd card and copy the contents back to the sd card.
change to sprint only network (settings - wireless networks - mobile networks - system select .. choose sprint only)
uninstall app 3rd party applications; perhaps something running is the culprit
If still no joy; I would root it and try a custom ROM. Maybe a file got corrupted at some point and that is causing the disconnections.
I really like the one I am on, its worked beautifully.
I'd be happy to help you through the root process if it gets to that point.
Good luck
It doesn't matter whether I have it or not, they rebooted the phone, brought up the dialer, made one call(he might have made two, one of the other people was talking to me) and sent me on my way. If they can't replicate the problem, then their policy is to not do anything. I even asked them if I could make a video of it first hand when I get home, and they basically said that won't change anything cause they have to be able to replicate the problem first hand.

I will try SD card when I get home. I don't have any third party apps, as the technician on the phone hard reset my phone like 3 times. I tried every custom rom, and I even tried to go back to DI18. All of them had the same problem, so I am guessing it is hardware related. Again, data is working correctly, just seems to be something with the calling hardware.

If you have TEP - don't even bother with taking to the store any longer. Just complain enough over the phone and you should be able to get someone to send you a new one.

Unfortunately I cannot really wait for them to send me a phone. I need to get something today, as this phone is also my work phone. Customers do not like going straight to my voicemail :/
After a tech on the phone with Sprint screwed my phone up even worse, had me stuck in an activation loop. He told me to bring it to a Sprint store. Well this was at night so I Odin'd to stock DI18 and let it do the OTA and that cleared up the loop. It may work for you and save you grief.
Do you BONSAI?
DDTM is not on is it??

I've heard of similar things. I helped someone troubleshoot the problem and came up with it had to be the tower. They called again to customer service and of course they said that nothing is wrong with the tower. I think that they called again to make a report to check out the tower near their house. They did that a few times. I don't know how long it took to fix the situation. I do notice lately that, even though signal strength was okay before, it's better now.
If you have another sprint phone, if you activate it, does it do the same thing? This might be one of those instances that if you complain enough, maybe they might give you one of those devices they have (I forgot what it's called) that you hook up to your home internet and it acts like a mini tower at home. I've heard of stories that after enough complaining enough, they'll just give you one. If the phone still does it then it's the phone that's flaky.
When you talk to someone, make it clear you use this phone for work and if people can't reach you, you will lose clients. If you start losing clients because of this then you will be forced to go to another carrier. If they say you'll have to pay etf then tell them you won't because it isn't your fault that you can't make or receive calls at work and home.
This phone or their equipment or service isn't working properly and you're losing customers because of this.
Here's another idea. Find someone else that has sprint. Have them go by your work and home and see if they can send or receive calls. If they can then its your phone, if they can't then it's the towers.

Note 4 Verizon no 4g and now lost 3g - in a strong 4g / 3g area

SOLVED! - see post #7
This SM-N910V is rooted and had 3g but apparently I lost that when mucking around with things trying to get 4g. I've got other phones like a Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 5 both Verizon models that get 4g or 3g fine in this same location.
First odd thing I noticed on the Note 4 was a setting that popped up seemingly by itself while in 'More Networks' and 'Mobile Networks' that showed VZWInternet with a circle by that which was not yet checked so I tapped that and it turned green in the circle. I have never been able to see that option again. I don't think this caused the problem though. I've looked at apns-conf.xml in the /system/etc folder and can't see a problem there. I also tried replacing that with another one that is supposed to fix LTE mode. No luck so I put back the original. I wiped cache and reflashed a backup with TWRP which had been working on 3G but that didn't help - no 3g even. I did not wipe Dalvik/ART cache. I had been messing around in the 'Service Mode' menu with a bunch of different settings in an attempt to get 4g working but I'm fairly certain I got everything set back the way it was before I started. I noticed that one setting I had left different in the Service menu did not change back after flashing a restore with TWRP (full restore - all boxes checked). The one setting I left changed was the under the 'AS' protocol menu where I changed the Release version control to "LTE 3GPP REL 9" from LTE 3GPP REL 10". I know enough to be dangerous
Open to any suggestions - am wondering at the moment if I should have wiped the Dalvik/ART cache before the whole TWRP restore? At this point I'd be happy just to get 3g working again.
I also tried Dr. Ketan's LTE Enable. That didn't fix anything. Although I see MNC and MCC numbers in the apns-conf.xml file when I look at the SIM with a SIM info App I just see blanks in those spots on the SIM. Not sure if that's relevant - just giving as much info as I can here.
Did another restore with TWRP after wiping Dalvik/ART cache but that didn't fix it either. Strong cell signal but no 3G or 4G.
More info - I put the SIM card in another phone and it sees 3G at least.
It seems the "lost 3g or 4g" problem is very common and it seems I've looked through dozens of message threads here but I'm not finding any solutions. I'm looking at flashing the 'ltefix.zip' from this thread but it seemed to be for a custom ROM and I've just got the stock - more or less - 5.1.1.
Hmmm.... Been at this all day reading here, searching, trying everything but still no Mobile Data. Is this as elusive as rooting a Verizon Note 5? LOL - it was working at least on 3G. I'll take hints or even wild guesses at this point.
Okay - it finally flashed on me to do a restore of my EFS. Oddly I had done a full restore with TWRP which include EFS but that didn't fix the problem. That TWRP backup was done the same day I did an EFS backup using Dr. Ketan's IMEI tool for the Note 4. When I used the IMEI tool to restore the EFS backup I then had the 3G come back on. This is a 4G SIM so I still don't know why I'm not getting 4G but at least I got 3G back. I did have a hiccup using this IMEI tool which initially caused the phone to repeatedly shutdown after a minute or so and could not be restarted without pulling the battery. I believe it had to do with the 'Restore' button needing to be held down a certain amount of time instead of just a tap. I probably held, released too soon then held longer which I suspect caused a partial or damaged EFS restore. Be careful in how you use this tool or you may end up in that situation. I had to work very fast after a bootup to get it properly restored. After that it was stable again and had 3G.
Now if only I could figure out what it takes to get 4G.
..
I wasn't getting 4G for the longest time, checked the PRL in settings on my GFs phone and noticed my PRL ver was like 50 thousand something while hers was 15518. Got a new Sim card and all my issues went away, PSA do not use *228 programming...EVER.

Update/more info - I've continued to try and figure this out to no avail, although I got fed up with stock unrooted 5.1 and am now running modestrom v9 with a CQI2 base. And all of that install went fine, except for 4g of course.
I think this is worth mentioning as it might have something to do with the situation:
Way back in the beginning, I had gone through the entire unlock/root process, and everything actually worked fine the first time. This was right about the time the unlock became available, I bought the phone based specifically on that being possible, and got a brand new one at that time. Well, it was awesome for about 2 weeks, fully functional 4g and everything.
I had a very particular goal - I wanted this phone totally unlocked, but I was also very interested in the advanced/wifi calling that was supposedly coming out at that time - I was planning to move to a place with no vzw service and would be reliant on wifi for calls at home. Verizon wasn't clear about the fact that the wifi calling feature wasn't coming until MM, and this was before MM was released, so I was running a completely functional, 5.1.1 rom. I believe it was jasmine. So, under the impression that "advanced calling" would have given me wifi calling, I tried to enable it.
I cant recall if it was immediately, or a few hours after, but this is when the phone lost 4g for the first time. I immediately tried to deactivate the advanced calling feature on my line, but it didn't help. And nothing I could do would bring back 4g. I tried everything possible, and ultimately gave up and threw the phone in a drawer and went back to my note 3.
Fast forward several months, and my note 3 began to have issues with call audio, forcing me to use the 3g-only note 4 in order to actually handle day to day business. Again, I went through the processes of trying to fix 4g, with no success. Now by this time, MM had been released, I believe PD1 was the current firmware. I figured at this point it was time to just odin back to 5.1.1 and start everything over.
So I odin flashed the phone, and it booted into 5.1.1......with no 4g. Again I went through all the things I found here, no improvement. Finally, one day when the phone was bugging me about an OTA, I figured "what can it hurt at this point, its nearly useless without 4g anyhow."
And low and behold, the OTA update from verizon booted up and immediately jumped to 4g.
Now I felt I had a chance, a method that I'd finally proven could fix the problem. I left the phone in that state for a couple weeks, just to prove that it was holding. No problems during this time.
But I got sick of no root, and so I figured it was time to try and go through the steps again. And again, I lost the 4g connection. No big deal, just odin back to 5.1.1 and let it OTA like last time......
Except this time it didn't work. So I odin flashed back to 5.1 again, and let it try to OTA, again. I let the phone continually try to OTA all the way up to current, and flashed back to 5.1 at least 3 times to repeat the process in hopes it might fix something. No change at all. At this point I actually began to try and see if possibly Kies could help me here - maybe there was something related to the phones EFS? Which I don't understand very well btw - it was only through reading this thread that I began to research EFS and its significance. I also attempted to use some of the checkboxes in odin - the ones to erase all NAND and to clear EFS and rebuild it. Neither option made any difference. So I figured next logical step was to start playing around in service mode, which would require unlocking/rooting again......
And thats how I landed here. About an hour ago I got sick of the stock 5.1.1 and went through the whole root/unlock process and I'm currently running modestrom on CQI2 or whatever was just most recently posted. Every other part of the phone seems normal, but still no 4g. I can actually see the radio making an attempt to connect in the service mode - but I don't understand service mode menus well enough to interpret where the actual problem is. Upon boot the phone tries about 3 or 4 times to get an lte signal, during this time there is simply bars of signal, NO data indicator of any kind. Eventually, it gets frustrated and gives up, connecting to 3g and staying there. I realize now that when 3g drops, which is roughly every 10 minutes or so, its actually the phone attempting to establish LTE again. But still, I cannot make any sense of this.
Apologies for the giant post - I'm trying to put anything that could possibly be relevant info into one place here.
So........ anyone got any suggestions?

PM sent. Just to share a little of that here I think the first thing I would do is tell VZ you suspect your SIM card is bad and have them put in another one. Tell them it fell out when changing a battery, the dog ate it and by the time it came out you suspect it wasn't quite right anymore - LOL. I do think SIM's flake out sometimes and I know a bad one can prevent 4G from working. If you ever had an EFS backup from anything try restoring ONLY the EFS (if you use TWRP). No guarantees that will fix it but my best guesses at this point. Good luck.
..
I supect Verizon's doing this ...

I got a used stock note 4 to try and compare and see what I could be missing here....
Tried new sim card at least twice, unfortunately no dice, and the same card pops right into the spare note 4 and it wakes up on 4g just fine.......
EFS is something I probably should have been quick enough to dig in deeper on before this, as I don't have any backup of it....... however, I'm not seeing any other symptoms, I can see my imei fine, and every other function works. Is it possible that corrupted EFS can cause the loss of just one type of connection like that?
For giggles I tried a friends att sim, and no lte on that either.
Playing with the app LTE discovery, I can tell that the phone sees 4 different LTE towers just fine, showing db numbers exactly in line with the stock note 4 sitting right next to it, theres just something there under the surface thats stopping them from hooking up...... it stops trying after a couple minutes, rejects them all and connects to 3g.
I'm convinced its some kind of software thing, but I can't tell exactly where the failure is happening.....
I also odin flashed it back to stock bpa1, and still no dice. Is there a means to make an EFS backup without root? I want to see what happens if I try unlocking the other note 4 as well, but this time I want to have the backups......

I've been running on Emotion 7.1.1 for months with NO issues (well, some minor stuff, you know....)
Suddenly, two weeks ago I got a notice from Google that I had to sign in on my phone. Verrrryyy odd. At first I suspected some hack attempt, but my Account checked out fine. Having changed my password recently, I had to wait until I got home to login.
After I logged in, all ~appeared~ to be OK. Then I opened my Calendar. B L A N K. All ten years of appointments gone. I freaked out. I have two calendars, one for personal stuff, birthdays and the like, and another with my business appointments, INCLUDING FINANCIAL STATUS of the account. Gone.
Went online on my PC, signed into Gmail and switched to my calendar. Empty. Looked in Trash. Nothing. Vanished. Nada. Niet. There's a long story here about recovery efforts, troubleshooting, Googling, etc, suffice to say that TWO separate, redundant, backups had quietly failed, without the notifications they were supposed to send. I did manage to get from the first week in April back 10 years, but lost the whole summer. Thank YOU-KNOW-WHO that I'm good friends with all my clients.
Fast forward to last week. Suddenly I get 3G only from my Verizon account. Like you, I spent days on the boards, downloading ROMS, wiping, re-wiping, trying everything short of smoke signals to get it back. No joy. I did NOT go back to stock, I must thank you greatly, as that was my next road. Now i see it's a dead end. I will NOT give up my Nougat root just to get 4G.
Perhaps this is a bit conspiracy theory sounding, but I've become convinced that Verizon is playing some game, perhaps to force us to upgrade to a new phone. I learned long ago that corporations have no soul, and will do anything they like to increase profits. They exist for two reasons; to make money for their officers and to make money for their stockholders. Any other semblance of a "Product" or "Service" exist ONLY and SOLELY for that reason. Anyone who is a Yahoo or AOL member knows the level of intrusive ads and attempts to trick people into putting spyware in their machines under the guise of "protection" or "cleanup" programs has jumped to a new level of absurdity since Verizon sucked them up. "Oath" indeed. It's what is coming out of existing customer's mouths! M O N E Y H U N G R Y.
When I chatted at length with a Verizon Tech, she made it clear that she knew the answer was to upgrade to the latest stock (I never admitted to rooting, but she knew, we spoke "between the lines" a lot). She sent me a SIM card, but it., of course, didn't fix the problem, in fact it would not even initialize properly! I had to go back to the original SIM.
Now that we've found a way (after YEARS of trying) around their stupid block on rooting, they change the game. What person who is so into their phone as to root it, will put up with 3G? This is something Verizon is playing at, Sprint too from what I gather.
My only consolation is that I've got so many WiFi's nearly everywhere I go, and when I'm not near one, my Wife's Note 4 (not rooted, on latest update) works fine. I'm glad I decided not to root hers too.
Frankly, this really ticks me off. I have better things to do than spend days copying files, flashing and reloading data. Verizon knows that, and let me tell you, it won't be THEM who sees my money when I finally do upgrade.
Thanks again for saving me from the Stock route, you saved me hours of grief.
Peace out!

I have run into 4g issues with this as well and almost came to conclusion is a modem issue. I want to say but can not confirm that modems that are flashed are relative to bootloader on the device. Just something I've been pondering on as I had a unlocked bootloader device and flashed for wife to use with no root and recently unlocked again.

Verizon V30 can't change USB connection mode?

I ran into this problem while trying to do the WTF Bootloader unlock and Root method, as well as the Frankenstein phone...All the steps should work, except I can't even get the thing to allow itself to be detected by my computer.
I have read others with the VS996 who have done the WTF / Frankenphone methods without this issue.
I have plugged it in to the computer as I have with Android phones forever; it says "Charging" and gives no option to switch to MTP/File Transfer etc... I also go into the Developer Options to try and change this, I tap the setting that would usually allow you to switch it, and it opens no menu and acts as if there isn't one to be accessed. I've tried my Win7 and Win10 machines - same results each time. Also does not allow me to change USB mode while unplugged, or even enter download mode! I am using the USB cable that came with the phone, and have also tried other cables. I've cleaned the port on the phone, tried all USB ports on BOTH computers - still nothing. I've ever master reset the thing hoping it was a glitch , but it still will not let me change it out of "Charging" or even act like there's the ability to do so.
Did Verizon lock these things down so hard that you just can't use them like normal Android phones?
I have searched to an exhausting extent, I'm out of ideas... I don't use Verizon, so I really need to figure this out so it doesn't keep thinking it's still being used on the Verizon network. My service works, but it constantly says the SIM is not a Verizon SIM, and won't provision certain services (such as Emergency Calling) ... HELP!

No, Verizon hasn't locked this down.
You said you've already Master Reset your phone, so that's very strange.
I know you tried different computers/different cables/different ports -- but the only thing I can suggest is to try other different computers.
Plenty of VS996 owners on here have Frankenstein their phones. Some then reverted back to VS996 TWRP flashable zip, after bootloader unlock and root, to regain Verizon VoLTE as they are Verizon customers. But no one has had any trouble with USB connections.

No, Verizon hasn't locked this down.
1) I know you tried different computers, but other different computers.
2) Since either Frankenstein or WTF bootloader unlock is going to re-set your phone anyway, go ahead and do that now PRE-EMPTIVELY. Maybe going back to factory defaults will fix something.

I've factory reset. The problem is, it won't let me switch from Charging mode to File Transfer / MTP mode. It doesn't detect the computer and the computer doesn't detect it - doesn't give an option to switch USB mode, etc... See attached screenshots - that's what it looks like while connected to USB no matter what cable or PC it is connected to.
I'm actually trying to Frankenstein the phone, but can't even get past the part where the phone and computer need to communicate via USB because of the problem I'm having.
So I guess, has anybody ever had this problem and found out how to fix it? It's all I need so I can Frankenstein the phone.

I am finding this very strange too.
I don't have anymore computers to try.
Is it possible that it's still somehow tied to Verizon? It was recently used by a friend who gave it to me when he upgraded to a new phone. My calls / data work (I have to manually provision that) so it seems very odd that it won't full allow services / USB connections or even show the OEM Unlock option in the Developer Options.

I was editing my reply as you were replying. You had buried the important parts see the bottom, what all you tried.
No one else has any problems, to my knowledge. Tons of VS996 on this forum, who have Frankenstein'ed to US998 either permanently or temporarily to Bootloader Unlock and root.
All I can suggest is to try yet other PCs?
Other VS996 users can chime in, but I don't remember any reports of USB issues over the past couple of years.

I noticed that too, haha.
So isn't it supposed to let you switch USB mode even if not plugged in? When mine is plugged in or not, it acts as if the only option is "Charge" - if you look at the screenshots I attached, I've pull my top menu down where it should have a way to switch it from Charging to something else, but even that shows nothing... just charging, settings etc
I tried calling Verizon customer service just to see if they have some kind of security measure they sent over the air when my friend deactivated it from his account - but they're close, probably because of this COVID 19 thing (or they don't work on Sundays)...
@schwinn8, @nnjimmy59, @gimpy1
you all don't have any USB connection problems on your VS996, do you?
That's just three off the top of my head. We also had a Dev, TotallyAnxious who had VS996 for awhile and a very popular Anxious V30 mod -- but moved on to a newer phone a few months ago.
Never any mention of USB issues.

Well, my phones were not originally VS996. My personal phones were US998 purchases. The next two I purchased were H931. All of these converted via Frankenstein just fine. (One H931 had some issues, unrelated to the process - I believe it was a hardware problem with Verizon towers). That phone is now US998 running on ATT with no issues.
My wife and I are still running VS996 with no issues. I don't use USB much but I know it worked just fine last time I used it. I'm happy to test further if needed, but it sounds like this may be more of an issue with an originally-VS996 phone, as the OP is suggesting.
EDIT: To be clear, I don't think this is a real problem with the phone... probably just another "incompatible" computer/cable/USBport thing. So many people have these types of issues, and there's no guaranteed answer on what does/doesn't work. I'm happy to help if I can, though... I still have my older laptop which did all these steps just fine. I will say my new laptop (Ryzen) does NOT work on this process. I still have that older machine, in case it's needed again. If you love in the CT area, I'm happy to help first-hand...

OK. I'm pretty sure the others had original VS996, especially TotallyAnxious. I'm not going to officially mention her as she has moved on, but we communicated a lot when her Magisk mod was posted here.

I'm thinking it's probably because it's an original VS996 and Verizon is notorious for locking down their phones, even though they are carrier unlocked.
It wouldn't be a problem if I could just force the USB to work and get rid of all the Verizon programming...I'm really hoping someone out there has had to deal with this before and see this.

It's probably also worth mentioning that it won't enter Download Mode following the instructions found here : https://droidrecovery.com/lg-v30-recovery-mode/ (scroll down to "Boot LG V30 into Download Mode")
-edit- As far as incompatible cable/computer theory - I don't know...it's the cable that came with the phone when it was new. My other cable was from a Samsung Galaxy and both work with my Moto X4 (which is what I'm switching to the V30 from). All drivers are installed, no driver errors in Device Manager, etc...This is by far the most difficult phone I've tried to work with.

The button dance is notoriously difficult to get right. Try it a few times. Note, in the steps listed, it says to release then press the power button again... but it's not clear that you need to HOLD it, not just press it. At least, that's what I remember it to be. I only had to do it once... adb is so much easier.
I also want to point out that one of my original LG cables did not work either. Not sure why, but it didn't. The other one did... as did a third party cable. Again, the key for me was my older laptop. The new one does not work, no matter what I try. Granted, when I say it doesn't work, I mean it wouldn't do the unlock... the USB does detect fine and the phone does switch into the necessary USB mode.
Can you change the USB mode manually somewhere? Maybe it was set to "charging only" by mistake at some point? I think the popup asks and has a "remember" button... if that was selected, it may be continuing to use charge-only by default?
EDIT: Found it... in settings/system/developer options there is "select USB Configuration"... set that to PTP and see if that works to get you in.

I attached a screenshot in an earlier reply that shows what that looks like for me - I tap it and it does (literally) nothing. No menu, no option to switch - nothing at all - and that is actually the reason I posted here to begin with. I've never had this happen. It continues after multiple factory resets as well, and on the same computer I've successfully flashed other phones with.
This may be relevant? Maybe it's a Pie problem?

Different phone, but same symptoms.
Hi. Not sure if I can help any. But, here goes. I am on a Verizon vs996. Been a Verizon customer for years, still am. I have four phones on my plan, but I am the only rooted one. I rooted my phone about a year and a half or two years ago via Chazz 's Frankenstein method first, then the WTF method second. I currently use, for some time now, US998 rom (pie).
I did experience a couple of problems, but, carefully using/following all the instructions listed, got it done. My computer (at the time a surface pro 3 with windows 10) would not work for me. I finally borrowed an older laptop with windows 7, I think. That worked like a charm. No problems with it.
Other problems I personally had was understanding what the instructions actually meant for me to do, as I am not computer literate. I remember I had a hard time figuring out how to put the downloaded files into a folder in the correct location so the computer could find it. It really wasn't hard, I just didn't know exactly what they wanted or meant to do it.
Another problem was understanding how to use the "command" prompt. I had to click on something other than the command prompt (it was either a newer or older name for it - can't remember which). But, once I got it figured out, everything went smoothly and flawlessly. Somebody (ChazzMatt(?)) had linked to a different suggestion - can't remember what it was - but that worked.
What I would do now and what I did was, go in and print out the instructions. Once they are printed out, go thru it line by line, word for word and cross out everything that does Not apply to your phone, situation, etc. Read the remaining instructions over slowly and make sure what you are reading (and thinking) is exactly what the instructions say.
Messing with your phone can be very nerve wracking. It was/is for me, every time I do it. That's why I would print out the instructions and follow them exactly.
Sorry that's all I can add. I have to have exact explicit instructions and follow them (dummy mode).
As far as the button dance, I have never had a problem getting into twrp using it when changing roms. Magisk seemed to never install the first time and I could only get into twrp by using the button dance.
The reply to that reddit thread says that another user has it working in Pie. I wonder if you just have some weird corruption on your phone. I think you said you did a factory reset, correct? What I might suggest next is to try the Verizon repair process (they have some software that can supposedly reload the OS or something, as I recall). Maybe that will get you to a running state again.
And, again, try the button dance again a few times... I know it's annoying but it may work. If that gets you into download mode, you can then drop a KDZ for Oreo (or just jump into the Frankenstein method)... and you should be good? It's certainly weird that you can't get in there...
EDIT: Looks like not being able to access this setting does seem to affect a few phones on Pie... a quick google search confirmed this: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=android+cannot+change+usb+mode
Another thing to try - open up device manager, then plug in the phone and see if the list refreshes. This will tell you that Windows is "seeing" the phone, and maybe you can find out what driver it's trying to use. Maybe that's the problem? If it doesn't refresh at all, I would still suspect the cable...
Another post saying the same general thing: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/pixel-2-xl-usb-preferences-greyed-t3838058
EDIT2: You might also see if there's an app that can help you... like this one, for example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.vincze.usbsettings&hl=en_US

All I need is download mode and I'm ready to get this thing going, haha.
One of my computers detects the phone (it thinks the USB port can't supply enough power when I plug the phone in) but not as the device it is. The Windows 7 machine - nothing.
-edit- I tried that app just now and all it does is detect Android version and then if it's 6.0 or above, sends me over to Developer options. Seems like it just skips the part of going to it via the Settings menu... (indicates this phone is not supported by the app, based on the app's notices.
-edit2- Can someone link me to a video or screenshot walkthrough for the button dance? I may just be doing it wrong based on reading it, and the only videos I can find are for old Moto phones. Is that the same 4 corner thing?
edit3- I'm looking for anything Verizon may have to rebuild the OS...if anyone has some insight as to exactly where I can find this, that would be great.
When I attempt to enter "download mode" (same method as mentioned in a previous post) as suggested by one of the Verizon program that can repair it, the phone just charges and never enters any special mode.

Phone hacked

I need help identifying what app or setting got me into this mess.
I think the hacker has adb access.
He shuts down apps.. etc
He is messing with the notifications.. i get ony a few. Sometimes they come in late.
I have made reset from samsung setting and the boot menu, AND I INSTALLED A NEW ROM (the one for my phone) WITH ODIN. Still the issue resurfaces.
I think my roomate installed smthg in it. He is on the house wifi and he is got a degree in networking (i think thats what it's called, we study in french in my country)
Please i need help.
If someone needs any further details, please ask.
Avoid the wifi network you suspect your hacker friend is on, reinstall the rom downloaded on another network and stay on 4G and see if it still happens? Also suspect your PC to be hacked...
Thx for replying,
I did format my pc but i have connected it to house wifi.. didn't notice anything out of order though.
I found out about the "Revoke USB debugging authorisations" option in Developer Options. I think it is working.
Today, since i made a new instagram account, i added a mutual friend. Turns out it was an old and lost account, and thats when i got the error from the video.
Fortunately, i fixed it by un.following the account and clearing the app storage.
I need to know what access does he have?
Can't upload the video, here's some shots.
Look no further than yourself for the cause of this... one way or another.
RX: Factory reset, change Google account password.
Stop with the social media crap and go mingle with real people.
This not about social media, it's about getting my phone back.
With my old account, I couldn't even talk to my messenger friend. Today, thats like having your phone number unreachable all the time, frustrating.
Please if you don't want to help don't, but no need for quick unhelpful replies.

How was it compromised?
Understand if it was compromised it's more than likely because you left yourself vulnerable to attack.
A compromised OS needs to be cleaned or wiped... I gave you the solution(s).
No need to say thanks but don't give me lip about your screw ups.
Thank you.
I tried factory reset more than 10 times, different ways. No luck.
I think he is got access to one of my friends account but i don't know how he is using this connection with me ( message, notification.. i don't know)
@blackhawk what you said is true, and i didn't mean no offense.

Reflash the firmware especially if it is Oreo or below.
If it's not embedded in the firmware, it's being added by you albeit inadvertently.
Your Achilles heel is social media... don't be so predictable. Break the link in the chain.
None of the social apps should be running on the device, they are malware. At least keep them in the cloud.
Email must always be kept in the cloud and any attachments downloaded from it scruntinized or preferably not downloaded at all. All downloads are suspect.
At this point your data base is suspect as well.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result.

Unless someone physically got their hands on it, there's no known way the Android 11 stock factory image can be compromised by a rootkit or virus. A factory reset is all that is needed.
The problem happened after the reset.

That is exactly what i suspect did happen. I often leave my phone home and my pattern is known for him.
How can i undo a modification of that level.
(I intend to go to a phone repair shop and install new soft with the "box". Is this recommended or is it a bad idea)

Never leave a phone physically unsecured as that's the only real security there is.
You need to have the firmware reflashed then be careful what you put back on it.
Change all your passwords and use secure passwords.
I ithink i this is the problem.( in the pic below)
There was an app called android device.. don't know if this is normal. So i deleted it and restarted and things are back to normal.
Sorry i can't upload the image, the app closes automatically.
