Touch problem when not holding the device - Desire General

I experience that the touch becomes bad and even stops to respond if i have the phone on my desk and only using a finger. Its like a grounding fault. If i have the USB cable or charger con8nected there is no problem, or if i have one finger on the casing or holding the device, its no problem.
But when the phone is lying solo on table, its hard to use touch. (i have no screen protection)
I will post a video of this to better explain what i mean.
Im wondering if capacitive screens is ment to be this way, or if i should get it replaced.
This will make it hard to use in car having it in a holder...

I have noticed exactly the same and been investigating about it.

Does not happen to me. I put the phone directly on the desk, I have a screen protector on, using only one finger on the touchscreen works perfectly.

I just got my invisible shield, and the problem just got worse.
I guess i have to get it replaced :/
Donnt wanna be wihtout it ><

Yep I would get it replaced, just check mine at it works fine any which way.

Works OK here, just tested it out.

also no probs

Ok, thanks guys.
Maybe it does'nt like my fingers

When you say it stopped working, did you by any chance have the phone on a worktop? or was you holding it in your hand?
There are reported issues with phones not working all the time when on a worktop, however mine always works when its in my hand.
When my phone is laying flat on any surface the screen just refuses to respond... however if I angle it just slightly it works just fine, or if I pick it up.
I have the same issue when its in the car dock. I didn't have the issue when I was running the stock bell rom this only happened when I installed cyanogen 6.1
My g2's touchscreen gets super lllaagggyyy, like laggy as crap whenever it is connected to the charger @ near full charge. It's random...yet it's not, like for instance..I can put it on the charger and initially it's very responsive. Then, after a few minutes charging the screen *seems* to be unresponsive, I just have to swipe it slowly and it jerks by @ like..5fps seemingly. This has happened on every rom ive tried so far from stock to CM.
Just installed MIUI and haven't had a chance to test..i'm assuming it's hardware related though.
When I First got my G2, The TMo Rep asked me to open it up at the store since i was getting the first one from that store and the touch screen didnt work at all, we turned it off and on and nada. So they replaced it with another one and it worked just fine. Other than that little problem i never had a issue on my G2 as far as touch screen freezing goes
Seems like shoddy hardware to me... I've never dropped the phone.. its always been in a protective cover.
Although I couldn't help thinking.. maybe all the extreme overclocking / general heating up of the phone may have contributed??

I have never OC my desire Z (not G2) but I have noticed the exact same symptoms of an unresponsive touch screen after flashing cyanogen 6.1.
I returned back to my stock rom and everything is back to normal.
I haven't had a problem since..
yes, when its on a worktop (table, desk, anything not my hand) and in a dock -- its not as responsive as you'd expect. I have to hold it and caress it with my warm loving hands to get it to respond.
now ---
this is not related to CM 6.1. at all. Ive flashed a lot of things since visionary and its happened on every single rom.
Id go get that phone out of the mail if I were you OP.
I have also noticed the problem with touch screen responsiveness when my G2 is mounted in a car holder.
I have figured that you just have to keep one finger on the aluminium body and the problem is gone. I have to admit that this is somewhat bizarre and I have never had this problem before with my G1 using the same car holder. Seems that there is an issue with electric isolation? I don't exactly understand how capacitive touchscreen works so can't really explain where the dog lies buried.
Maybe this is a feature. Protection and saves battery.

The same for my DZ - it is kinda weird, because if the phone is for example in the car holder it is impossible to use the touchscreen unless I put another finger on the phones housing. I tried different roms already, but the 'error' is still there.
It would be interesting if all users have the same problem or if it is just a few examples of phones out there.
Thanks,
Robert
Wow,.... only just noticed this a few days ago. Along with it not vibrating on incoming SMS, i'm starting to get slightly ticked off.
yeah happens to mine too =P
happens to mine also, nothing we can do about this?

help. replaced shattered screen. buttons not working.

I replaced shattered screen using the digitizer from eBay for $15. Everything is fine but the four buttons on the bottom of the screen. I did it twice re opened it still no. Anyone else had this issue?
Anyone ? Ned help
i did the same thing, but only the lights of the buttons didnt work. the buttons themselves did. are you sure they are not working??
what the eeefff where's the help at??
Sprint tech here, I'm assuming they're not lighting up at all much less responding to the haptic feedback? Might just have a bad set of touch panels along with LEDs under the digitizer.. Let me know. I've seem a couple of phones like that lately after people replacing them themselves. Possible might just be a bad screen all together??

Home buttons, Search button Etc.. Doesn't work! :(

I've tried many solutions, I completely wiped and reflashed different roms. I've also repartitioned my SD (doubt that would do much) .
and still my button's wont work.
Has there been reports of physically damaged bottom buttons? I see no damage whatsoever also lights up perfectly.
Just an idea!
Please help me, its the only phone I currently have in my apartment. Any help or suggestions would be amazing thank you !
Only thing I can think of if there is no damage to the digitizer part would be damage to the ribbon cable that connects the digitizer to the rest of the phone.

That's what I was thinking... is it difficult to open the phone up ? or is very sophisticated with the amount of screws?
Dude I had/have the same issue. I opened up my phone and put it back together. It started working better now. But whenever it stops working momentarily I just lock and unlock the screen.
there is a seperate flex cable for the buttons, it could be this or it could be the digitizer, either way relativley cheap and easy to replace. you can't always see the problem so just opening it up and looking may not tell you the problem.
but like strawmetal said, if there is some corrision on the contact points or some other intermediate problem, just opening the phone, disconecting it, cleaning things up, and putting it back together may fix your issues

Came down to once yesterday. Earlier I even had a thin horizontal strip on the screen where touch wouldn't work. I had a tough time accepting/canceling dialog boxes. This is no longer an issue. Hope the bottom capacitatives don't show any more problems today. Then I'll be back onto the rooted side of android.

EDIT: I got a lot of ghost activity on myscreen today. Fixed by lock and unlock but goes back to ghosting in a minute.
Today I didn't have any issues, phone was working normally, no unresponsive screen at all, capacitive buttons also worked well. It is puzzling...

[Q] touchscreen problem

hey
my touchscreen is gone crazy..
i am on SPEEDroid rom ..
n the lower section of touchscreen stimulates TWO touches by it self..
n then i went to settings and developers options then i ticked the SHOW VISUAL TOUCH FEEDBACKS and POINTER LOCATION.. n on the bottom of my screnn i can see two DOTS (touches which inturn is genereating the pointer location and the visual touch feed back)
any sugesstions??
is it hardware problem or software problem
??
Had a similar problem with my old HTC Hero back in the day, the difference though was the the bottom of the digitizer (the part that registers the touch) didn't work at all, it happened slowly but in the end it was like that, it began by simulating touches and at last stopped working all together.
I fixed it by replacing the digitizer that I bought off ebay for a few dollars, I have no idea if that is possible on your device, but it sure sounds like it is a hardware problem.
Best of luck

Im having a similar problem, whenever I put pressure on the bottom right side of the phone (opposite of charger slot) it make my screen do the same thing, except it always happens at the very bottom right of the screen and it messes everything up, and it also messes up the soft keys, like I try an load an app an it starts spamming the back/search button and trolls me everytime its EXTREMELY annoying to do anything, thank god mx player has a screen lock otherwise streaming videos would be near impossible, I tried putting tape in the same spot it happens under the hard case and it's actually pretty effective it only ever happens now unless I really grip the thing.
I have similar problem....sometimes phone generates random touches even if I am not holding it...but fortunately only sometimes

Screen Rotation Not Working

I was having this problem before a little and I would just do a simple reboot. However, this morning my clumsy niece dropped my tablet on the floor Now the rotation is not working at all.
I've seen videos which lead me to believe that the issue is due to a loose ME571k cable. I have tried fastening it. I inadvertently took it out and reconnected it. I've tried to fasten it the best I can. The touch screen works. However, orientation is dead.
There was a program mentioned called "Test My Android" and none of the sensor calibrators show any sign of life.
This is driving me crazy. I don't know what to do. Maybe it is loose and I just have to keep on messing with it but it's stressful.
Any advice?

Yes it is - for sure. The 'rotation' sensor is a tiny chip which is unlikely to be damaged by a drop.
re-seat the cable on both ends
spray the contacts of the cable with Electronic Cleaner if possible
apply a layer of thick tape over the cable's motherboard connector, so the back cover will deliver extra pressure on it
Let us know...
Hello, I followed the steps of next video and my screen rotation has fixed

It seems no matter how many times or how snugly I set the cable in that the screen rotation still does not work.
I'm using an app for rotation now. It works but it drives me crazy.
