Loved everything about the desire, but found out that HTC are no better than Apple for locking down there phones and bricking people who want to flash custom roms;(
This goes against everything i thought the android movement stood for!
So HTC you should hang your head in shame for scaring people that want to tweak and customise their phones to there own spec... This whole usb bricking thing has now made me sell my Desire and im buying a N1....
HTC Stink and Google rule!!!
JD
Same thing can happen on the N1 too you know?
No it cant,
I have had a chat on twitter with paul tonight, its impossible to brick an N1
You can brick anything, from a PSP to a Nokia 3310, just different chances/issues.

Nothing's unbrickable - the N1 is just a lot harder!!
Yes, the problem with the Desire is that it "bricks" randomly without doing anything wrong apparently.
But I can promise you that if you update radio and pull out the battery during that on a N1, it will be bricked.
But that's not the sort of thing you're expected to do
hahaha
Yes very true
Well its very sad because i loved the desire, HTC killed the fun;(
Welcome to the world of N1))

Well, send me your phone and pay me $100, I can brick it for you (instructions included).
I am thinking of doing the same thing!
where and how much for did you sell your desire?
and where did you get your N1?
Don't forget to change your signature JupiterDroid!
I'm actually thinking of doing this myself. I love this phone, but without a stable root I just don't trust it. I just bought a great case for it as well! How much did you get for your Desire and where are you getting your N1?
Well thats not entirely fair is it? Yes there is a current issue with the flashing bricking phones but it's being worked on. When it get fixed and full root is acomplished (and i'm shure they will) it'll be just as "open" as the n1.
after all, if and when it's acomplished i'm sure i would miss the hardware buttons (i come from a touch hd and it is NOT the same!!) and maybe someday also the little bitty extra ram and personally, i prefer trackpad to trackball.
I get your frustration and you are entitle dto buy any phone you want but isn't this a bit exagerated?
Only my two cents!! Best of luck with the N1, it's a gras phone!
PS: maybe you shoud stick around and wait for Galaxy S (even if it is a Samsung!!!!)

do you have any source for the information you post here ?
dont forget that some people can decide if they buy or not this phone just because what you've just said. if its not exactly as you said or maybe just a rumor\guess\wishful thinking - you can make many people disappointed.

You do know that the N1 is also made by HTC, there's a reason they are so similar in hardware and design so they are not gonna care much which one you buy
Who makes the N1.... isn't it HTC

ajeuk,
Yes, the N1 is made by HTC also. It's branded as a Google phone, but HTC built them.
I think I did read something about removing Sense from Desire to put it like a N1, and N1 can get on Sense from HTC if they "desire"...
Thought the N1 and the Desire were pretty much the same phone!
- I wouldnt jump ship unless I was getting the Galaxy S (although dont really like the look of it ... - battery life on it sounds very very good though...)
All I read in the forums are complaints about the Evo. I personally don't have a single issue with the phone aside from the awesomeness overdrive. Obviously, people will post/complain more about their issues than those who are completely happy with their phone. But it does skew the image of the Evo for those who happen to stumble on to XDA in hopes of researching the phone for future use. So here's a poll.
bump. i really want to know.
btw. how the frak do i change my signature?
if you can tell, its so damn old!
love it! and no issues!
Best phone I have ever owned or even used for that matter. Few issues but I think most will be solved within a month of release. Pretty damn impressive if u ask me.
Now if HTC would just release the source code we would be in heaven!!!

Same here. If there were, I don't notice it and it doesn't bother me at all for me to completely disown this phone.
It's amazing in many ways and there's still plenty of room for improvements. The roms will certainly help this phone get there.

Having this phone is really starting to mess with my circadian rhythm.
I don't feel anything....but there's alot I THINK about it.
I love it. It's the phone I wish I had years ago when the first iPhone came out. I had a Hero before, and I still liked my wifes 3GS, now with the larger screen of the EVO, I don't have that screen-envy anymore. The iPhone just looks tiny and awkward now.
What are the problems people in the poll are talking about? I don't have any issues with mine.
The people that come to this site repent one half of pone half of one percent of evo owners. The people you see here are either either true hackers, heard about how awesome rooting is and want to do it without reading directions, or find us by way of common search term for a specific issue they are having.
The point is, we may hear slot of complaining here, but its because we're part of a vocal and participatory minority.
I have an ipad for work, I had the pre and before that an htc touch pro before a myriad of other phones dating back to the nokia 101. The evo and android are the closest I have ever seen to fulfilling the promise of mobile technology and convenience.
The future is here, and many of the people reading these forums are holding it right now.

My 2 Cents
I really like the EVO even though it has some issues like the Camera/Video quality for instance but most are mainly Network related so it would be a better experience had it been on T-Mobile...now the Dream/G1 A.K.A Valeria, (I named her that LOL) that's my baby, I love the **** out of that phone and still have it and probably would never get rid of it...many reasons why, it' the 1st Android phone, (so the Mother of all Androids) it's the White version (had it as soon as it was available) it was my first Smartphone and hacked phone from which I learned a little bit of Linux and it was given to me as a present on my Birthday by the love of my life...yea it's official, I'm never getting rid of that phone! Sorry, most of that had nothing to do with the EVO
I love it but my main gripes are the Android Market. Hopefully more devs make more apps or port some over. The app store isn't really organize and I would like to see some spotlighted apps or recommendations based on what apps you have installed.

It takes time and patience, both for the devs trying to crack the safe, and for the people that want the goods. The devs can either spend time posting everything that didn't work or they can spend time thinking of and trying other tricks. I prefer progress over frequent status reports.
You can also watch the Incredible S forums as it's very possible if they find a hack first that it will work for the Incredible 2.
The more we ask like little kids on a car ride with mom and dad, the less harder they are going to work for us. Devs HATE ETA. let me repeat this, THEY HATE IT!!! When/ IF full unlock root comes it will most likely first be in the hands of raskal and the XTC clip, thats perm root but we need a software root like the Thunderbolt, and trust me when I say this, every DEV wants to be the one to crack it. Give it time, enjoy the phone for what it is, or if you're like me and still have your inc1/old phone go do some root things on that to hold you over, 2.1 ROMs and becoming very stable with 3.0 additions over on inc1. Just imagine what root will be like on this phone.

Moved to proper forum.
I'm a noob, so this may not go over well. Many people are seeking to upgrade their phones soon, like myself. I have a Dinc that is rooted and loaded with roms that are backed up. Rooting and romming is now a way of life for me, and I really am considering the Dinc II.
However, when you go through long periods of not hearing anything at all (especially for a relatively new phone as the DincII), it makes you wonder if you should pass, or upgrade to something you may not really want as much, but is rootable.
To all the Devs out there that work hard, myself and others really appreciate your hard work with no certainty of a payoff. From what it looks like to me is that many seeking updates do ask in very respectful ways if this, or certain other phones are "lost causes" or not. I know I check periodically and try to be as patient ass I can be. I believe that most others are too.
Exactly! I'm thankful for the work they're doing, but it's hard to keep the faith when there is silence.
My hope is that the DincS work can be repurposed and that this is a lot of sturm und drang over nothing!

I know I'm not then norm, but I figure I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway:
When and if permaroot becomes available for this phone, that's great. If it never does, I'm still content knowing that I have a great phone, and I can temp root to do the few things I need to do.
I admit, sometimes I miss the old days of working with custom ROM's and such, but this is such a great phone to me that other than removing bloat, I don't think it needs much.
Any which way I look at it, I'm very thankful to the devs who are working on this phone...they have a patience and skill that I will never have.
I have to agree. I held off on getting mine because I was hoping it would get rooted. But after I found temp root and was able to remove the bloat, its been a fantastic phone so far.
Yeah, perm root would be nice but I can definitely live without it of I have to.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
If you're considering a new phone, have a relatively recent phone, and are willing to wait, I'd highly recommend waiting. It's possible permroot is months away. I know it took quite a long time on the Eris (several months).
Besides, if you have an Incredible, the I2 isn't that much of an upgrade for you. I went from an Eris to the I2 and it is leaps and bounds better. However, going from I1 to I2 you get a slightly bigger screen and a better graphics accelerator and that's it.
If you really must get the I2, and you must have root, proceed with the knowledge that IF it gets rooted, it may be some time away.
However, going from I1 to I2 you get a slightly bigger screen and a better graphics accelerator and that's it.

Quite a difference from Gen 1 Snapdragon to Gen 2... Oh, and FFC is different as well. That to me is a nice feature that I really would like. And there are reports of much better battery life between Dinc 1 and Dinc 2
The difference between Gen1 Snapdragon and Gen2 Snapdragon is going from Adreno 200 to Adreno 205 GPU. The Adreno 205 is quite a bit better, but still behind the curve compared to, for example, the current Hummingbird SOC (when I played with a Charge at the VZW store, it got double the framerate on graphics related tests). The core CPU is still the same between the two devices.
It's been a month, and having no further evidence that a software exploit for permanent root/unlocked bootloader is near being released, I'm dumping my HTC One. Hate to have to leave HTC, but with carrier restrictions and not having the ability to customize my device without sending it 2000 miles away, I'm not going to sit on this phone and watch it die for 6 months, then be stuck with it.
I've debated back and forth, and refuse to send my device out to get S-off. I don't think many developers are going to be interested enough to buy the device if they don't already have it knowing this is the only option of doing so. But I do thank Sonic for helping a lot of us out.
Thanks for the help most of you have given me, good luck, and hopefully an exploit comes out by Friday morning.
Have fun. Good luck

After being a crack flahser for 2 years, I decided that I was spending 6-8 hours per week flashing ROM's. Why, because I could. Other than the few customizations I did, my primary use for an unlocked and rooted phone was to use Google Wallet. Since my new CC offers me an NFC card, I don't even need Wallet. That said, I purchased the One as I wanted a FAST phone without having to tweak it and spend hours unlocking and swapping ROMS.
Point being, the ONE may not be the phone for you if you want to unlock it and customize it further. This is one of those things that you should have been aware of when you purchased it. If knowing there was no exploit availble, and you purchased it with the hopes that there would be, that was your mistake and I agree, you should get rid of it. NEVER purchase a device that has not already been exploited if you like to flash ROMS.

If after the release there is no exploit , I will then send my SEXY Blue BEAST out to Sonic and let him sprinkle some magic on it , and then we will have Tranquil on our Ones.

This. The only things that bother me with sense is the cluttered status bar, the wifi persistent notification, and few other other things.
I just picked up my One last night, having been swayed by the irresistible Best Buy price this week. I'm coming from a Thunderbolt, which was my first Android phone and one on which I had a lot of fun learning to root and ROM. I did that to my heart's content on that phone.
Having said that, I came over to this device because, well, yeah, the price... but also because it's such a massive hardware upgrade over the Tbolt. I moved over to this phone with my eyes wide open. I know there's no exploit at present for the One, and I accept that there may never be one. I'm not crazy about Sense, so one of the first things I did was to run Nova Launcher. Bye bye Blinkfeed, etc. I'll be fine running this phone stock unless and until.
I agree with the general consensus here: don't get a phone you won't be happy with stock.

Congrats on the major hardware upgrade I had the Thunderbolt for a little while, wasn't a big fan, then got the Rezound. Loved the Rezound. But yes, the HTC One is an amazing device, even stock. I also didn't like blinkfeed, so I am, too, using the Nova launcher.
To the OP, thanks for stopping by, good luck with you future devices. I'll hold out for a hopefull exploit after 4.3 is released, and like others have said, if that doesn't turn out, hopefully I can send my phone to Sonic to get s-off.
Should never buy a phone with the expectation that it will be unlocked. Especially in such a short time frame.
I don't think it was necessary to make a post about getting rid of your phone, but to each their own.
I hope you find the phone that works for you. Just don't buy a phone you aren't happy with out of the box. Sounds like you should either buy a nexus phone, a dev edition phone, or wait and buy a phone that the community has already exploited.

I think I agree with most people when I say this, I didn't buy the One for it's root or ROM capabilities I bought it because the phone is awesome. I personally think HTC did a great job with Sense 5, before I used this I was on the Thunderbolt and it was still a good phone I'm glad u went with HTC. The only reason I care for root now is adblock and uninstalling Verizon's apps.

Still have confidence in XDA Dev's
I can sorta see both sides of this. To me the HTC one is the best phone I have owned BY FAR! S4 was great phone but I like the build, screen, and speaker quality of this one better.
I get the "Don't by the phone if you aren't happy running stock" line of thinking. However, I buy these phones with full confidence that XDA developers will find an exploit within a reasonably short time. Every phone I have owned way back to the Driod X were rootable within a short time. Am I wrong for thinking that?

I'm not going to tell you that you're wrong for thinking anything. You would be wrong, however, in buying a phone with expectations that devs would root the phone and then throw a fit if they don't. If you think they owe you something - I'm not saying you do - or if you think you deserve their efforts on your phone of choice then you would be wrong in that.
The advice to buy a phone you love AS-IS is great advice because if you don't get what you're hoping for, you're still good with your choice.
Is it wrong to hope the devs get you squared away quick? No. Is it wrong to demand it of them? Yes.
Did no-one buy this phone or is it too new?
If its the former we need to get a PSA going about how great the phone is so people buy more, if its the latter I suppose we should just wait...

Yes, it's almost M8, so it would be pretty easy to port some M8 ROMs to the EYE, GPE ROM for example. I would do that if I had any tutorials. But I haven't found any.

Yeah I thought the same thing but for the moment in my option, due to the fact that it is an At&t exculsive it will take some time before people outside this carrier obtains it. Unless, you are like me and decided to purchase it unlocked; which is not a bad idea if you ask me. Additionally, since this phone is new and HTC has promised that it will be supporting devices like the M8,Desire EYE and new devices with updates and fixes for the next 2 years I personally will not be bothered with rooting my device. Besides, we are soon due to get Android 5.0 directly from the source so why not wait and enjoy the direct updates from HTC because after 2.5 years we will be on our own.
After 2 years, which I would most likely still have it in excellent order will then decide to root it and add a custom rom on it.
But dont worry, you are not alone in buying this phone. It is an amazing device that in more cases than one is much better,on the same spec stage and cheaper than the M8.
I recently received my desire eye. I won it on HTC elevate though. Awesome program. But I see that it isn't a very popular option. Since I'm on Verizon mine will be used mostly as a WiFi device. I can day that once lollipop gets here you will really like it. Dttw works perfectly

Yes this is an absolutely amazing phone, I had a Moto X, then tried WinMo with the Nokia 930 and then went to thi, its the best phone ive ever owned, brilliant performance, great battery life, awesome connectivity, the only downside could be its physical size, not a problem for a big guy like myself but if you have small hands and small pockets you wont find this phone easy to use.

Thanks for the reply. Got my iPhone up for sale on Swappa and will try to find one if it sells. Seem to be extremely hard to find used. May have to give up on getting one and go with something else.
