Bye all, thanks and good luck. - Verizon HTC One (M7)

It's been a month, and having no further evidence that a software exploit for permanent root/unlocked bootloader is near being released, I'm dumping my HTC One. Hate to have to leave HTC, but with carrier restrictions and not having the ability to customize my device without sending it 2000 miles away, I'm not going to sit on this phone and watch it die for 6 months, then be stuck with it.
I've debated back and forth, and refuse to send my device out to get S-off. I don't think many developers are going to be interested enough to buy the device if they don't already have it knowing this is the only option of doing so. But I do thank Sonic for helping a lot of us out.
Thanks for the help most of you have given me, good luck, and hopefully an exploit comes out by Friday morning.

Have fun. Good luck

Best you stick with nexus and dev devices if you care so deeply about rooting your phone. No ones going to stop you from leaving but just know all of us will still be enjoying the beautiful hardware of the HTC one

Meh, not sure how much I respect the "look at me" post, but as a person who just switched from a Verizon Gnex to this phone today, the post really needed to be made because it does reflect on more peoples opinion than just his
i guess if you can't take the stock, keep out of the non nexus'....OK that was bad

After being a crack flahser for 2 years, I decided that I was spending 6-8 hours per week flashing ROM's. Why, because I could. Other than the few customizations I did, my primary use for an unlocked and rooted phone was to use Google Wallet. Since my new CC offers me an NFC card, I don't even need Wallet. That said, I purchased the One as I wanted a FAST phone without having to tweak it and spend hours unlocking and swapping ROMS.
Point being, the ONE may not be the phone for you if you want to unlock it and customize it further. This is one of those things that you should have been aware of when you purchased it. If knowing there was no exploit availble, and you purchased it with the hopes that there would be, that was your mistake and I agree, you should get rid of it. NEVER purchase a device that has not already been exploited if you like to flash ROMS.

AMEN.
Some of the great phones of the past took months to unlock, and the people who waited ended up with awesome
Phones. Anyone who thought this vzw phone would be rooted in a few weeks isn't real bright.

For all of you that are dumping your Ones for something else BYE . But Im almost possitive there is an exploit for this device and it will not be released untill the 4.3 update rolls out so that it dont get patched , thas my two cents . If after the release there is no exploit , I will then send my SEXY Blue BEAST out to Sonic and let him sprinkle some magic on it , and then we will have Tranquil on our Ones.

This. The only things that bother me with sense is the cluttered status bar, the wifi persistent notification, and few other other things.

I just picked up my One last night, having been swayed by the irresistible Best Buy price this week. I'm coming from a Thunderbolt, which was my first Android phone and one on which I had a lot of fun learning to root and ROM. I did that to my heart's content on that phone.
Having said that, I came over to this device because, well, yeah, the price... but also because it's such a massive hardware upgrade over the Tbolt. I moved over to this phone with my eyes wide open. I know there's no exploit at present for the One, and I accept that there may never be one. I'm not crazy about Sense, so one of the first things I did was to run Nova Launcher. Bye bye Blinkfeed, etc. I'll be fine running this phone stock unless and until.

I agree with the general consensus here: don't get a phone you won't be happy with stock.

Congrats on the major hardware upgrade I had the Thunderbolt for a little while, wasn't a big fan, then got the Rezound. Loved the Rezound. But yes, the HTC One is an amazing device, even stock. I also didn't like blinkfeed, so I am, too, using the Nova launcher.
To the OP, thanks for stopping by, good luck with you future devices. I'll hold out for a hopefull exploit after 4.3 is released, and like others have said, if that doesn't turn out, hopefully I can send my phone to Sonic to get s-off.

Should never buy a phone with the expectation that it will be unlocked. Especially in such a short time frame.
I don't think it was necessary to make a post about getting rid of your phone, but to each their own.
I hope you find the phone that works for you. Just don't buy a phone you aren't happy with out of the box. Sounds like you should either buy a nexus phone, a dev edition phone, or wait and buy a phone that the community has already exploited.
Sent from my HTC One.

I think I agree with most people when I say this, I didn't buy the One for it's root or ROM capabilities I bought it because the phone is awesome. I personally think HTC did a great job with Sense 5, before I used this I was on the Thunderbolt and it was still a good phone I'm glad u went with HTC. The only reason I care for root now is adblock and uninstalling Verizon's apps.

Thank you
Thank you .............................

Still have confidence in XDA Dev's
I can sorta see both sides of this. To me the HTC one is the best phone I have owned BY FAR! S4 was great phone but I like the build, screen, and speaker quality of this one better.
I get the "Don't by the phone if you aren't happy running stock" line of thinking. However, I buy these phones with full confidence that XDA developers will find an exploit within a reasonably short time. Every phone I have owned way back to the Driod X were rootable within a short time. Am I wrong for thinking that?

I'm not going to tell you that you're wrong for thinking anything. You would be wrong, however, in buying a phone with expectations that devs would root the phone and then throw a fit if they don't. If you think they owe you something - I'm not saying you do - or if you think you deserve their efforts on your phone of choice then you would be wrong in that.
The advice to buy a phone you love AS-IS is great advice because if you don't get what you're hoping for, you're still good with your choice.
Is it wrong to hope the devs get you squared away quick? No. Is it wrong to demand it of them? Yes.

Why isn't verizon promoting DInc?

Every time I go to a store they dont have it on display and they do not promote it at all. They promote Droid X and Samsung Fascinate but the DInc is in the back. The DInc is the best android phone in my opinion but they say and i cant wait for the Incredible HD, the sales rep says a majority of people complain about the battery life but with the right kernnel it seems the 15000 mAh battery is fne as long as u dont over use it but i ploam o get a 2500mAh
I believe it's all about marketing. Big Red feels the X is the closest competition to the Evo. I agree, the Dinc is the best out there right now. as far as changing kernals...the vast majority of Dinc owners are not rooted and flashing a different kernal is not an option.
Look at this forum. Most people are rootedl
hehe
For every 1 person that is rooted and on this forum there are 10 that have no clue what xda is think the term rooted pertains to trees and plants.
Its all marketing. Motorla pays more then htc so they get more. Htc will promote big again when they launch another device for verizon most likely.

Found XDA after finding something in the Market I wanted. It said for "Rooted User" and being 1 of the 10 that had no clue I Googled and found this wonderful place.
Still have a ton of learning to do but hoping to get to a level of knowledge where most XDA'rs are at.
The DInc came out at a really bad time, in my opinion
It came out a few months before th Droid X, so it seems Verizon was too busy advertising their new upcoming Moto Droid phone, plus the Droid 2 was about to come out a few months after that
Just seems they had, in their eyes, more "important" phones on the horizon.
I never saw any adds leading up to he release of the DInc, but saw tons leading up to the X
I guess they see the X and D2 as more "true" successor's to their original Droid baby
Because the phone is 9 months old and I think the shortages it had really limited its numbers.

Yeah, I got mine in July. There was a 1-2 month wait and the X was coming out by the week's end. Blogs couldn't stop raving about it. It was going to be my last resort. I frantically scoured the net and thankfully found an Incredible at Amazon. Right look, right size, and right specs. Best phone decision ever. The life on this thing is unreal!
I was counting down the days to the Incredible release, waiting for either it or the N1 to be released first. Honestly, I only wish they released it sooner and I'm thankful that there are so many developers working on making it better.

You want to know the funniest thing? I had a HTC Eris that I LOVED. My one year old threw it in the toilet (no app for that), so I had to wait for my upgrade. Went to Wal-Mart and picked up a D1 for $50. 1 Week later, wifey and I are shopping, and I see that they now have the DInc for.... wait for it...
$28. I scrambled to find my boxes, manuals, and receipt. They have a 30 day return policy. BOOM HEADSHOT.
I am now the proud owner of a Dinc running UD 2.5 and incredikernel #21 (sp). I honestly feel like I stole it from Wal-Mart.
I feel like I have my ERIS back, except it took steroids and became a Marine.

That's because this forum is designed for people that are little more hardcore than average users.
But, still, after all of the rooting and modding that people seem to be drawn towards, I don't see much of anything that's so different than stock.
Personally, I'm not rooted and have no intentions of rooting. I see absolutely no need for it. These devices are touchy enough without messing with root access.

you wont understand until how much more potential your phone has until you actually start playing it. ive been rooted since the day i got my phone (it was the first thing i did after i activated it). was a little scared to do it at first but have no regrets. rooting this phone is as simple as plugging your phone into a computer now and opening an app with a 99.9% chance nothing will go wrong. back when i rooted my phone being scared to root it was understandable as you had to mess with multiple things to get it to work. it actually took me about 6 hours to do it (had to pop in and out the sd card at an exact time) but now its a piece of cake. you really should open yourself up to rooting which will give you access to all the work of these wonderful developers at xda. im ensuring you that you wont be disappointed. with all that said hopefully you will allow your dinc to operate at its fullest potential!
I rooted with no regrets. I specifically bought this phone in april because I knew mods/hacks would allow cisco groupname vpns. That was the only reason I was needing root, which came available months later. Some other pros were using undervolted kernels, nandroid, and minor asthetics, but big whoop.
Come january first, I doubt Dinc will be in VZ's plethora of phones. It had a long 8-9 month journey. I'll likely keep my Dinc through Q1 of 2012, when i'm eligible for a free upgrade.
The best part is, it will still be handy like an iPod Touch with SIP phone, our can be a good smart phone for my daughter (a blooming developer).

I even switched from sprint just to get the DINC>why u may ask... cause sprint didnt have a decent android phone in the 3.6 to 4 inch screen.. I would have loved the evo. but no 4g in the sticks were i live.. So far the DINC to me is one of the best phones out atm.. perfect size and the style is great.. nothing too flashy.... even engadget still says the same...
The DINC should at least get another update..Its got the horesepower.. but the ball is in verizons court etc..on that one.. im just gonna sit back and enjoy it for a year or so then see what else is out there..

Lets say (hypothetically) the device doesn't get unlocked in the next few weeks...

What do you do?
Do you jump ship to a sure thing that can be unlocked? Do you look into an unlocked developers edition Moto X? Do you jump ship from Verizon and wait for a Nexus 5? These are the questions I have.
ALSO what would you take:
A) Great phone (say Nexus 5) on a sub par carrier? (AT&T/T-Mobile)
or
B) Good phone (Moto X) on a great carrier like Verizon?
I would like a Nexus 5 but oddly, it's cheaper for me to stay on Verizon and the coverage can't be beat. I love the feel of the One and even though I'm an aosp kinda guy, this phone doesn't feel bloated at all when you run a different launcher. I'm easily going to stick this one out till my next upgrade.

First off, my Verizon HTC One is already unlocked/rooted thanks to doing the HTCDev unlock on day one.
I would still keep this phone though if I was still locked and it didn't get unlocked any time soon. I am very happy with this phone even in stock form. Luckily I do not have to worry about it though. I just really hope ARHD and/or Venom get ported to the Verizon variant. I worry if these will ever get ported though since there is no longer a way to currently unlock/root.
I'm still going to stick it out, I just wish I didnt need to deal with the vzw bloat
I give my devices 6 months.
After that, I find another one
I enjoy this phone a lot though.
so unsure
The debate in my head is eating me up. I don't know what to do!
While I like the phone a lot so far (though, haven't experimented too much). I really don't like the blink feed and a bunch of stuff they've done. I really wish I could just have vanilla 4.2.2 or 4.3
That said though, I really like Verizon's network and I have a discount with Verizon and a family plan. So it's really not so expensive for me.
Will VZW even carry the next nexus subsidized?
I just wish I had bought the phone ~15 mins earlier, then I would be unlocked. Now I just wish there is an unlock before my return period is up.
I think I may return the phone and just wait for something better, but I really don't know! First world problems!

Chance of Verizon getting a Nexus 5 is slim to none. You want a phone close to stock android unlocked from the start on Verizon the only thing I see on the horizon is the developers edition Moto X.
And yea first world problems indeed.
I like the One even without unlock, so I'll keep it until a better phone comes out. However, after having the iPhone 5 with the metal & glass back and the HTC One and it's all metal body, I will never go back to a plastic body phone. I hope the other manufactures up their quality big time. No more plastic for me.

Use the APEX Launcher and you won't have mess with BlinkFeed or the vzw bloat, and will have 5 screens to use. And the phone is plenty fast.

My primary intention with an unlocked bootloader is to go near minimalist while maintaining the integrity of Sense 5. Now that Sense has several incarnations I might even find legacy Sense combined with Sense 5 an interesting custom ROM to run (I.e. Sense 5 with the full screen weather ani.actions that Sense 4 had.)
This is all under the assumption that we get unlocked, which if you consider the history of technology, there is generally no immunization available for a bug yet to be discovered, so hboot 1.54 will definitely get an exploit, the matter is time before technology advances to another stage.
That being said, considering it has taken this long without demonstrated progress to a permaroot situation, it's unlikely that we see one before the return period.
With all that in mind, your best bet isn't to worry about what phone has an exploit available, but what options your phone can have in the future, in this case you have the option to run practically every launcher or software, including Sense, which I happen to like, and from my Dinc days, have seen tons of cross bred ROMs that gave me the option to customize when I was bored. I think ultimately having a daily driver for over a month and I'm pretty much bored with any phone, and I just had the GNex. Had tons of "custom" ROMs, all with the same look and feel. And of course if you're a hardware junkie the One can't be beat imo.
I guess I'll probably keep it but I don't give up hope that we may have an exploit before next Thursday, in which case I'll be thinking much harder about it than I am now.

I couldn't agree more! The HTC One is such a sexy piece of engineering. I love that cold sensation you get when you pick it up for the first time in the morning. There is NO way I could go back to anything else!
Personally, I would love to come back to HTC. On the Samsung galaxy note 2 right now and its driving me crazy with dropped calls, dropping 4g to 3g that my rezound, thunderbolt, kids dna's just don't do. Got the Note 2 because of storage and battery life, which are very nice, but the plastic build sucks big time.
Development for the note 2 is pretty good which helps, but honestly, on today's phones, there just isn't a ton of improvement needed out of the box so romming isn't as important.
Quick question: is there even a temporary root option? Biggest concern is being able to keep game data on titanium.

same thing for me. I played with a motoX in best buy (STT) and not only was it already non-functioning, but damn it felt so cheap compared to this phone. Though I will admit the 4.7 inch screen in such a small housing made it very comfortable to maneuver with one hand (at least as easy as I can tell when working with a blank, non-working screen )
On my DNA I switched back and forth between CM and Sense 5, I love both. I'll stick with the one even if no unlock is achieved because A: I do like sense 5 and B: the build quality on this phone is the best I've ever felt. I would like to give CM a run on this phone though, so I'm hoping for an unlock soon.

I want to eliminate the drain from blinkfeed, but will stick to the stock Sense launcher if running Apex is just adding a second layer. Is Sense Launcher loaded if using another launcher?

I'm having the same dilemma. Love the hardware/feel of the One, but can't stand sense or the idea if running a skin on top of another skin. Not to mention built in WiFi which I use quite a bit (unlimited plan).
I kept my galaxy nexus longer than any other cellphone since my first in 1993, because I've been able to flash lean ROMs, keeping it useful well beyond it's time.
MotoX developer edition is on the horizon if this phone is not unlocked within a few days.

Damn, that's disappointing

Selling my HTCDev Unlocked One....where to go next....

Like the title says, I have my HTCDev Unlocked VZW One listed on Swappa. Love the phone, love roms, etc etc, but like many others I'm disappointed with the shutdown of unlocking the bootloaders. And FYI, yes, I bought the phone with the knowledge of them being unlockable (checked 5 minutes before I bought), then they got locked down, and I was gonna return it because of that, but I know many people would be upset me with taking back "one of the six" unlocked phones to Verizon. Just doesn't seem right, it could be in a developers hands.
In any event, I didn't necessarily wanna start a debate of f-this phone or that, but I'm looking to go in the direction of the most developer friendly phone, current or upcoming (preferably upcoming). At the moment, I'm leaning Moto-X Dev Edition. I am happy they did Dev Editions and am a strong supporter of them. What I'm wondering is if it will get the dev support on our carrier it should, with only having dev editions vs all of em being unlocked. LG G2 - bootloader status unknown (past devices) as well as past-time hating LG devices, as well as hating touchwiz (yes, I made that reference on purpose). However, I'm also considering the Note 3 (still hating touchwiz) dev edition. As much as I disliked touchwiz, the Note 2 was probably my favorite device to date.

Get a GNEX that's about it.
A lot of S4s still come with mdk out of the box. Even though ME7 is locked tighter than fort knox, if you get one on mdk, I think that's about as dev friendly as it gets on Verizon right now.
To be totally honest, you might want to be patient and wait a bit. The One is one of, if not THE most popular phone in the world, with crazy dev support on other carriers. I'm not sure how popular the X will be, especially since its getting mixed to good reviews so far and not nearly as widely available as the One and S4 are. If the One gets unlocked or S-off, it could very well be the most dev supported phone on Verizon very quickly. But maybe it's that "if" part you're tired of dealing with.

It's only a matter of time. Every device, to my knowledge, has eventually had an exploit or workaround. Might have to wait until Verizon pushes an OTA but it will eventually happen. And again, to my knowledge, I believe the One is the only quad-core on Verizon at the moment, so even if it leads the pack in that respect, it will be a while until it's matched and bettered in terms of raw processing capability. If you get a quadrant on it, it's into the 13,000's, it'll make you feel better about holding onto it.

I hate making assumptions like that, but that's my hope as well. And the S4 is quad core, same processory, clocked higher than the One.
Are the really only 6 that got unlocked? I'd have thought it was more than that.
I was at Verizon when they opened to purchase mine and went right back to work and unlocked it.
So its been out for a week or so tops and you cant wait to see what happens? While I enjoyed my Galaxy S3, the One is a far superior phone in build quality and even though the S4 is a tad bit better in specs, its still crappy plastic and feels cheap. I can see if you still have a chance to take it back and exchange it free and clear, I still have a week myself, I'd like to wait and see what happens with this phone. Honestly there is nothing else for me to go to, I dont care about the MotoX even in Dev form because I dont see it as being any better than what I got, same with the Droid line in general, they are all locked down as well and have been for some time. If I would think about the S4, there is no chance I would get one that I could do anything with and its back to vanilla unrooted again anyways. The LG-G2 looks really nice but their reputation for phones isnt all that great.
So I think I'm just going to stick it out and see what happens, if I had an already unlocked One there would be no way I'd be switching at this point.

It's a joke from the other thread. I'm one of the illustrious 6 I guess lol.
Just bought your phone, can't wait to get it!
There are 20 people on the unlocked list here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2416238
And I am sure there were more who didn't see it or didn't bother posting in it.
As far as the OP as concerned - I guess it would depend on your android preferences. In the last 6 months I went from...
1. Gnex - absolutely loved it - but dat battery life and after owning 18 months I just wanted a new phone :/
2. Note2 - way to big (obligatory "that's what she said), the screen looked washed out to me. I think 720p at that size not so good maybe, hated touchwiz.
3. GS4 - beautiful screen - ridiculously awesome screen, awesome battery life. If I hadn't have taken the update (stupid, stupid, stupid me) maybe would have kept it. But again - I hate touchwiz. TouchWiz really is a train wreck. I mean 4 tabs in the settings page? And I HATE physical buttons!
4. HTC One - build quality was out of this world, screen is awesome. Speakers awesome (but I always connect to bluetooth sound so...) Battery meh, Sense 5 meh. Better than TouchWiz but not as good (for me) as vanilla Android). Camera meh (in my opinion), I don't care what you call your pixels if there's only 4 of them - meh. PHYSICAL BUTTONS - why?
I was Dev Unlocked on the One - but what does it matter if no one else is? I don't have the skills to pay the bills. So the One is on its way to NYC via Swappa.
5. MotoX - love it. Will sell it and buy the Developer Edition when it releases. I just love vanilla android. The phone feels good in your hand - like the One. Even though it is plastic - it doesn't feel like Samsung plastic (hard to explain). But I would say if the build quality of the One was a ten then the X would be a 7 in comparison. Great size. Good size screen in a smaller package because of bezel elimination. Camera meh. Battery. So far so good. But I haven't had it 24 hours so we'll see. Development though is meh right now as well. But I can live with less Development on the MX because it comes pretty much the way I want it whereas the with the One I was hoping for an AOSP build. Oh - and no physical buttons!
So yeah. That's my ramblings.

Haha, yeah, that's what I'm thinking right now too. Probably gonna shoot for Moto X Dev Edition, was gonna do exactly what you did, but I had a backup GNex laying around and figured I could crack flash in it for a while till Dev edition releases.
I'm a phone freak....I've got a problem, I admit. I've seriously had 20 phones over maybe the 2 years. Only 1 at a time, and even bought same phone at different times. I gotta quit this, haha.
And yeah, the "6 of us" thing was a joke from cm10.2 thread. Didn't even see that other thread about actually unlocked people.

Your listing reminded me that I needed to email my buyer his unlock code. Completely forgot about that.
I gave my Dad my Gnex or I would have done what you did. And yea - I have got the same problem as you do. I am (in all seriousness) actually getting tired of being so tech addicted. I am going to TRY and just get this Dev Edition X and call it quits for at least 18 months (famous last words). Unless Verizon actual gets another Nexus which will probably never happen.

If you were really trying to ditch the tech addiction, you should get the locked X, not the dev edition.

Sooo I am waiting to see if this device gets rooted and a black one becomes available through Verizon.
But at this point as much as it pains me to do so I will probably wait till all the fall phones cards are on the table and make a decision come October what phone I should get. Htc One? Developers Edition Moto x? Or (the way I think I am currently leaning) a Nexus 5?

Yes - on Verizon.
I'll tell you - after coming from the GS4 and the One I was really worried that the screen would bother me. But I seriously don't notice any difference. But here's the thing. I am not super picky about some things. I am mostly picky about software (vanilla versus OEM skins). I love vanilla Android and I love on screen buttons.
I also decided (and everyone will have their own opinion on this which is fine) that as far as a pocket-able device; I don't want a really big device. I have a Nexus72013 to cover that. The One is not bad at all. But it is a little on the tall side. But like the Note2 and Note3 - I just don't need that size. What's nice about the MX is that it kept a pretty good screen size but eliminated a lot of bezel.
So for me - I love the MX

Hey HTC one owners

I just added a line to get the blue model from best buy and my other phone is an s4 rooted and unlocked. I know this one isn't but so far this one beats my s4 by responsiveness and smoothness. Barely any lags which my s4 had quite a bit. Love this phone.

As solid as this phone is, compared to the S4, I felt I didn't need a case for that phone and could toss it around, with the htc one it's like a baby, I am very gentle, just ordered a cruzerlite case, gotta love amazon points, $16 item shipped for $1.46
Just finished setting everything up, migrating from a Galaxy Nexus.
Phone is rock solid however all the bloatware + HTC Sense is killing this device.
Can't wait for root, I really really hate Verizon's crapware!
Glad to have you guys here in the community!
S-OFF is coming alive thanks to Sonic, hoping to get a card myself to help the remainders and those not willing to ship phone as far.
I just don't want to take a $1,300 loss...

Those cards are that ... wallet thumping? Good lord, either way there's got to be some way to jack it aside from the card. I mean, look at crApple products like the iPod and iPhone, even those can be modified (even if it's next to pointless anyways). I remember a couple years back they said that the HTC HD7s wouldn't ever be "unlocked" but alas it was. And some of those modifications to the Windows based OS were really cool. Aside from all that though; if you're close to me I'd drive there and get it done and drop a few bones your way for the service of course. But I believe someone out there has at least figured out a little bit. There's got to be something, if we can "hack" the PSP, we can sure "hack" this phone. lol
Yeah man I read that the prices were high for a 500-credit card, which can do 250 S-Offs at 2 credits a piece. Still that's brain-cramp inducing. I'd buy a couple credits to get mine S-Off'ed but I can't be without my phone for what will wind up being about 10 days between shipping and waiting for it to be processed. Kind of wish I'd hung onto my RAZR M for a couple weeks. lol
I can't be without my phone. I got a One without there being a known unlock because I can live with Sense. Swapped my Galaxy S4 for one when Amazon marked the Droid MAXX as "we don't know if we'll get this in stock again or not". Bleah. Anyway I love the One, way more responsive than the S4 I returned. Gonna hang onto this baby for a while.
I might buy a card and set a day to have everyone close meet at like a Starbucks in NYC, it would save stress, time, money (shipping to and from) you also not without your phone for 4-10 days and it never leaves your sight, you can watch me do S-OFF.

Did no-one buy this phone or is it too new?
If its the former we need to get a PSA going about how great the phone is so people buy more, if its the latter I suppose we should just wait...
I think it's just because it's relatively new. It only went on sale this week in my country. But hey, if you want to spice things up, go ahead and post something!

Oh the pressure!
It's new and in the US here its only available on one carrier and most people are waiting on the M9 flagship phone. We also don't have s-off so we cant do any fun mods really. Honestly it's a M8 in plastic with water proofing and different cameras so its nothing groundbreaking. I wouldnt expect much out of this fourm

Yes, it's almost M8, so it would be pretty easy to port some M8 ROMs to the EYE, GPE ROM for example. I would do that if I had any tutorials. But I haven't found any.
Im waiting also on some custom rom,but nobody take care till now about this device.I will try to ask Venom team cos they make the best custom roms.

I wouldnt say it's easy by any means especially since most HTC Devs on this site do not own the device and with the different cameras come different drivers it makes things harder.

Yeah I thought the same thing but for the moment in my option, due to the fact that it is an At&t exculsive it will take some time before people outside this carrier obtains it. Unless, you are like me and decided to purchase it unlocked; which is not a bad idea if you ask me. Additionally, since this phone is new and HTC has promised that it will be supporting devices like the M8,Desire EYE and new devices with updates and fixes for the next 2 years I personally will not be bothered with rooting my device. Besides, we are soon due to get Android 5.0 directly from the source so why not wait and enjoy the direct updates from HTC because after 2.5 years we will be on our own.
After 2 years, which I would most likely still have it in excellent order will then decide to root it and add a custom rom on it.
But dont worry, you are not alone in buying this phone. It is an amazing device that in more cases than one is much better,on the same spec stage and cheaper than the M8.
I recently received my desire eye. I won it on HTC elevate though. Awesome program. But I see that it isn't a very popular option. Since I'm on Verizon mine will be used mostly as a WiFi device. I can day that once lollipop gets here you will really like it. Dttw works perfectly

Yes this is an absolutely amazing phone, I had a Moto X, then tried WinMo with the Nokia 930 and then went to thi, its the best phone ive ever owned, brilliant performance, great battery life, awesome connectivity, the only downside could be its physical size, not a problem for a big guy like myself but if you have small hands and small pockets you wont find this phone easy to use.

Thanks for the reply. Got my iPhone up for sale on Swappa and will try to find one if it sells. Seem to be extremely hard to find used. May have to give up on getting one and go with something else.
