I have always owned and loved android devices since the g1. I always got carrier branded devices and switch every so often. I thought it would make sense to grab a gsm nexus so I started researching, and boy did I research. I thought that the price of a gnex from google is not bad and i had enought money to get one, but for whatever reason i figured i'd check ebay, but they sell for the same or more used. so I checked craigslist- on payday i saw what looked like a great deal... new gnex with extra battery 300, so i contacted the dude and met up about 40 minutes drive. the phone was in new condition there was the extra battery and vanilla ics, tried it made a call so i took it. while driving away i started playing with it.. i went to the camera app, got a message stating to insert sd card, i was like wth a gnex with an sd card. then i got a call the there was a flashing led at the bottom. i got home and examined it well, turns out its a fake ( my fingernail can operate the capacitve sereen) it looks so damn real... now im screwed out of 300 bux. I was so upset i went to google and got a new one, so I should have it soon... learnt my lesson well.- i really didnt think that fake phones existed and damn they did a great job... i think ill just give it to my son- he will by happy to have it
Pics or it didn't happen LOL. Can we see it? Wanna see how good of a "job" they did.

nevr thought to play around with one, i was just going off youtube, but seriously its a DAMN good job will add SLR pics tomorro
You didn't notice the feel of a resistive screen? It is distinctly different from a
Capacitive screen. Also always check the about phone, storage, EVERYTHING. I hope you learned your lesson, sucks for you :3
PS fingernails can't operate capacitive screens

I would love to see this too. I mean, it sucks, but it's also a fantastic lesson to everyone out there. Don't buy things used carelessly. Ever.
I want to see this as well, I tend to avoid Craig's list nowadays. After I nearly got into a fist fight with a man after deciding not to purchase his phone which he would not let me hold nor turn on...

Yeah that's a fake. The site even looks like amazon, with the way it's laid out and even some of the graphics.
This is why I like buying things eBay over CraigsList. eBay has gone to great lengths to protect buyers. With that being said it is such a pain any more to sell things on eBay (major hassle listing/shipping items, excessive fees, picky buyers) which is why I usually won't sell things on eBay any more.
In your case though you got a fake phone, which may have been hard to tell when you bought it but hypothetically if it were a Verizon phone for example it could have been completely real but may have been stolen and had a bad ESN. Even then though I believe you can check with the carrier to see if the ESN is clean. I guess what it boils down to is you just have to be very cautious whenever buying something from an 'un-trusted' source.
On a side note, I just received my Verizon Nexus that I bought on eBay for $240. This thing was listed at 'Used' but it is seriously in like new condition, not a scratch or scuff on it (and it came with a nice case). I am absolutely loving the phone so far. Only thing I don't like is that I didn't upgrade to it sooner.

I'm staying away from eBay and craigslist from now on, just for certain things I guess- i got a sweet shih tzu puppy for 300 bux on CL so I guess in the end it all evens out. I'll just get a simple mobile sim and give it to my kid, so its not a total loss, he will be happy with it. I'm just amazed of what a good job they did with it. and the fingernail test is how I narrowed it down - compared it to my girl's SG2. Im getting withdrawals waiting for the real phone to ship from google.

Anyone considering selling their t989 and switching to the Nexus 4? With the N4 only $300, and our phones still going for $250-$300 on eBay, I see no reason not to.
I am, I don't like this phone. Not sure if I am taking that route though. I can't even get it to sell on Craigslist. Mines perfect condition, no scratches anywhere not even on the screen and kept in the D30 case. :/ oh well, any Nexus sure beats this phone.
I have mine listed on Ebay right now actually at 260 and it has a bid. Includes case and 8 gig card. I'll be happy to shell out roughly 100 extra for the 16GB nexus 4 after it sells. I didn't think to Sim unlock mine, but seems like the Sim unlocked ones are selling for a bit more if you're planning on listing it.

Agreed that I won't be noticing that big of an upgrade, but no offense to the Devs for this device, generally nexus phones have tons more support in development.

Funny you brought this up,
I used to own a HTC Sensation 4G. I got it for $180 and it was only 2 month old. I used it for 4 months and realized a few issues with it.
1. Sense sucks (I hate it and Sense on the Sensation is buggy)
2. Getting it S-OFF is difficult and I almost bricked it attempting so I never tried it again.
3. Charger is in a dumb place (on left side of phone)
4. HTC would not confirm a Jellybean update (made me feel like it wasn't getting it)
So I decided to part with it. I always wanted a Nexus for the stock Google experience. I wanted a LG Nexus 4 but didn;t want to wait nor pay $300+ for a phone with no expandable memory. But one day I was browsing craigslist hoping to find a used Galaxy Nexus ( Hard to find in my area ) and I found a guy selling a S2. He had it listed for $300 new in box. I thought to myself "That's not a bad deal since T-mobile wants $450 retail". So I set up a meeting with the guy. The phone was used but hardly. No scratches and all the wrapping on it minus the screen protector. It was a 9.9/10 only because it had been used. So I low balled the guy hardcore offering him $200 cash. HE TOOK IT! So now I own a Clean ESN, still under warranty, like brand new, Galaxy S2. I am glad I made this decision. And plus Samsung already confired it would get Jellybean. I am happy

I'm seriously thinking about the Nexus 4. I love the pure Android N7, which increases my temptation (makes me want an N10 too!). The lack of TMO wi-fi calling is a problem though, as I live behind a bit of granite, so my call reception sucks at home. I work from home and my mobile is my primary work phone. Gotta be able to make and receive calls.
I've just been looking at cell signal boosters and what S2s & MyTouch 4Gs are going for on eBay. Might pass the S2 to my daughter and sell her crappy MT4G. Then I'll probably switch to a TMO Value Plan and save some monthly $$. I think I'm going to try a cell booster this week. If that works, I'll probably go for the N4 one way or another.
I'm dumping this t989 asap. I can still sell it for 200-300 beans easy. The Nexus 4 is an upgrade in evey conceivable way. I sold my Nexus S 4g for this phone and I regret it. Can't wait to be aboard the Nexus train again. It's gonna be a great ride.

Well might as well put my two cents in on this. as i spent today thinking about selling my phone on ebay and buying it as well. But then i realized alot of things about the phone that i dislike that i never knew until i dug deeper. Just a few things, that helped me in my final decision to wait till official jelly bean for sgs2. It will improve our phone quite a bit i believe.
1. no wifi calling, other then some free app that gives you a different phone number... worthless in my eyes.
2. the battery isn't removable, so when the battery dies so does your phone.
3. the glass backing is extreme fragile one slight drop and its cracked, front is durable.
4. heard poor battery performance, i know this is still debatable (firmware, usage) but, with no option to switch it out... risky.
5. washy colors on the display, even tho the resolution is very great.
6. no sd card expansion, i mean who are you apple?

My Galaxy S II is up on eBay now as well. I loved the phone for the year I had it (longest I've ever kept any phone) and it's even more awesome now that I put CM10 on it, but I'm going Nexus only from now on. Can't beat that $350 price tag. I think everyone who goes from a Nexus device to one that's locked down with carrier bloat ends up regretting that decision.

The lack of an SD slot isn't an issue for me. All my music is on GMusic, and I don't really store anything on my phone but ROMs and ROM related things... so 16GB will be plenty. What does everyone store on their phones that needs so much space anyway? Even if I wanted to store my entire music collection, that's 150GB+... cloud storage sort of gets rid of the need for that. With 16GB, you can even store a few seasons of TV shows... so again, what are you guys doing with your phones? Torrenting?

I guess the price of the nexus justifies the lack of SD...but i store alot of music/work stuff on my phone. A nandroid backup is 2 gigs on its own.

yes. any new, not already unlocked HTC One's on vzw are currently locked as well. However, if you REALLY need unlock super urgently, you can pay a small fee and send the phone to a member of this community who bought a javacard and can s-off your phone. But, like a lot of people say (and I tend to agree) dont buy a phone that you wouldnt run stock. If you only want to one to root, but there's another phone out there that works for you without root, I would honestly go with the other phone.
Personally, I am loving this phone, and one of my best friends has the S4. The features are cool, but the One is just so much nicer. I would trade, unless something else catches your eye that you'd be happy running stock

Thanks, this is the answer I was looking for! I feel I would enjoy stock on the htc one better.
Having both phones, (well s4 is getting screen repaired will be home soon) I would chose HTC One.
So solid and HTC Sense kicks the Touchwiz by a mile, the phone is perfect size, I could go on but I personally would go for the One, s4 is great as well and I do like it, but the htc one is so build so solid I trust it more. it just beats things for me in every aspect except the s4 having sd card, but htc one has 32gb internal which is plenty I just like the option for sd card, but def not a deal breaker esp with 32GB. compared to 16GB on s4 at same price.
Pick up a meenova for extra storage space.
I had a Galaxy S4 for 2 weeks, and now I have the ONE. Mine is used for work and personal, and I will say that the One is amazing. The text, email UI 's are 100000 times better looking and better functioning than the Samsung crap. I've had the Captivate, GS3/4, so I am not anti Sansung at all. The One feels premium, the screen is awesome, Sense 5 is actually good, the battery life is on par with the GS4, and the speakers are great. In my opinion, the One is the better phone in every aspect, unless you like a bigger screen.
I'm waiting for a black one on verizon to sell my black gs4 (or if someone wants to trade me) or i'll just wait for the htc m8 (assuming verizon doesnt take 6 months to release it again. I hope they fix the stupid button placement and put the normal 3 capacitive buttons on it.

I just traded my S4 for the HTC One yesterday, well really switched carriers from Sprint to VZW. The S4 has a lot of features with its TW ROM but found myself never using them. If the TW features are not a big deal to you then i will make the switch. HTC One looks sleek and feels like a $200 phone. What really made me change was that speakers are on the front. There's more that i can talk about but I'm very satisfy with my switch. I'm disappointed that root is so difficult on VZW.
from my experience the only benefit of the s4 is a user replaceable battery a sd card slot and the camera is sharper. If those don't matter allot to you i would go with the One.
So I ended up switching! So far I like sense a lot better and the one seems much snappier! Anyone know of a sweet case for this phone?

Hate to have to leave HTC, but with carrier restrictions and not having the ability to customize my device without sending it 2000 miles away, I'm not going to sit on this phone and watch it die for 6 months, then be stuck with it.
I've debated back and forth, and refuse to send my device out to get S-off. I don't think many developers are going to be interested enough to buy the device if they don't already have it knowing this is the only option of doing so. But I do thank Sonic for helping a lot of us out.

After being a crack flahser for 2 years, I decided that I was spending 6-8 hours per week flashing ROM's. Why, because I could. Other than the few customizations I did, my primary use for an unlocked and rooted phone was to use Google Wallet. Since my new CC offers me an NFC card, I don't even need Wallet. That said, I purchased the One as I wanted a FAST phone without having to tweak it and spend hours unlocking and swapping ROMS.
Point being, the ONE may not be the phone for you if you want to unlock it and customize it further. This is one of those things that you should have been aware of when you purchased it. If knowing there was no exploit availble, and you purchased it with the hopes that there would be, that was your mistake and I agree, you should get rid of it. NEVER purchase a device that has not already been exploited if you like to flash ROMS.

For all of you that are dumping your Ones for something else BYE . But Im almost possitive there is an exploit for this device and it will not be released untill the 4.3 update rolls out so that it dont get patched , thas my two cents . If after the release there is no exploit , I will then send my SEXY Blue BEAST out to Sonic and let him sprinkle some magic on it , and then we will have Tranquil on our Ones.

NEVER purchase a device that has not already been exploited if you like to flash ROMS.

This. The only things that bother me with sense is the cluttered status bar, the wifi persistent notification, and few other other things.
I just picked up my One last night, having been swayed by the irresistible Best Buy price this week. I'm coming from a Thunderbolt, which was my first Android phone and one on which I had a lot of fun learning to root and ROM. I did that to my heart's content on that phone.
Having said that, I came over to this device because, well, yeah, the price... but also because it's such a massive hardware upgrade over the Tbolt. I moved over to this phone with my eyes wide open. I know there's no exploit at present for the One, and I accept that there may never be one. I'm not crazy about Sense, so one of the first things I did was to run Nova Launcher. Bye bye Blinkfeed, etc. I'll be fine running this phone stock unless and until.
I agree with the general consensus here: don't get a phone you won't be happy with stock.

Congrats on the major hardware upgrade I had the Thunderbolt for a little while, wasn't a big fan, then got the Rezound. Loved the Rezound. But yes, the HTC One is an amazing device, even stock. I also didn't like blinkfeed, so I am, too, using the Nova launcher.
To the OP, thanks for stopping by, good luck with you future devices. I'll hold out for a hopefull exploit after 4.3 is released, and like others have said, if that doesn't turn out, hopefully I can send my phone to Sonic to get s-off.
Should never buy a phone with the expectation that it will be unlocked. Especially in such a short time frame.
I don't think it was necessary to make a post about getting rid of your phone, but to each their own.
I hope you find the phone that works for you. Just don't buy a phone you aren't happy with out of the box. Sounds like you should either buy a nexus phone, a dev edition phone, or wait and buy a phone that the community has already exploited.

I think I agree with most people when I say this, I didn't buy the One for it's root or ROM capabilities I bought it because the phone is awesome. I personally think HTC did a great job with Sense 5, before I used this I was on the Thunderbolt and it was still a good phone I'm glad u went with HTC. The only reason I care for root now is adblock and uninstalling Verizon's apps.

Thank you
Thank you .............................
Still have confidence in XDA Dev's
I can sorta see both sides of this. To me the HTC one is the best phone I have owned BY FAR! S4 was great phone but I like the build, screen, and speaker quality of this one better.
I get the "Don't by the phone if you aren't happy running stock" line of thinking. However, I buy these phones with full confidence that XDA developers will find an exploit within a reasonably short time. Every phone I have owned way back to the Driod X were rootable within a short time. Am I wrong for thinking that?

I'm not going to tell you that you're wrong for thinking anything. You would be wrong, however, in buying a phone with expectations that devs would root the phone and then throw a fit if they don't. If you think they owe you something - I'm not saying you do - or if you think you deserve their efforts on your phone of choice then you would be wrong in that.
The advice to buy a phone you love AS-IS is great advice because if you don't get what you're hoping for, you're still good with your choice.
Is it wrong to hope the devs get you squared away quick? No. Is it wrong to demand it of them? Yes.
I'm a note 1, 2, and 3 user. This phone (even unrooted) just blows me away everyday. I'm very much looking forward to root and know it will happen soon. BUT, in my alcohol enhanced state, I just wanted to give some love to an amazing piece of technology. Samsung. You did well.

Right on man!
I second this, but with slightly less alcohol.....
Seriously though, this is Samsungs best phone so fare. I'm a long time iPhone junkie and do love my 6, but this Note 4 is quickly becoming my go to device for all media consumption
Agreed. I'm pretty much like running stock. With root I would like to increase head phone and speaker volume just a little. Plus kill some bloat. Otherwise quite happier than I was on previous devices.

Is there a way to improve the clarity when rooted? On speaker, mine is much louder than even my tweaked note 3 and pretty much the same or better than my old note 2 (God rest it's soul). If I crank it to much with headsets, it distorts.
This phone doesn't have root guys and, quite frankly, functions incredibly well right out of the box. It's the first Android I have had that has not given me an overwhelming desire to tweak. If root comes.. Cool. If not, equally cool.

Once I switched to the Google launcher I loved it much more
I consider the notes a premium device...I mean I've been a note lover since the 2.
but.....
my note 4 is sitting on my desk collecting dust. I have a one plus one, and I LOVE it. I gave it (the one plus) a week to try things out, and just...damn its a good phone. Not to mention there is NO sweat in rooting it. I cant really even run root with my email apps, and the MDM app that is also necessary, but its so easy to root - install my apps, adaway, etc, and then unroot it and we're all good w/ MDM..
I cant believe I'm paying monthly for this thing and it's just sitting here. Not to mention in preference for a phone at less than half the cost.
I looked at the one plus, but got the Note 4 free so I took it. BEST decision I could ever make, even without root. I love this phone. I have all 4 Notes, and an S5, it's rooted, stock, but rooted. The 4 is by far the best one yet. There is but one reason I want root, SD writing, but LolliPop is said to fix that soo...

Me and you must be opposites lol. I literally JUST sold my oneplus one on ebay after buying a Note Edge (pretty much a note 4)
I definitely agree the oneplus was crazy easy to root and customize.... hell I never even flashed a rom because with root stock you had so much control (I'm usually a Crack flasher).
And yeah the note 4 its locked down But hey... now I have something to look forward to... in the future I'm sure someone will find a loophole in the ATT note 4/edge bootloader security.
To each their own!

Nobody ever found a way to crack the s5, or Note 3, so the Note 4 won't be an exception. Especially now since Hascode is gone.

I agree, phones are a peculiar beast. I too have not yet re-rommed it yet because I'm satisfied with CM11.
When I got my note 4, I considered an Edge. I had my mind set on it....but when I got to the store and started looking around I buckled and got the standard 4. Of course, they didnt have them in stock either, so that helped lol. Now in the days of tempered glass screen protectors, a phone that doesnt have/cant have one, is a big gap for me.

Paid for it with ATT Next....so I'm paying for it for like 24 months.
It's not a low supply phone like the nexus 6 I had for a short period. I bought that on Next, didnt like it, sold it for cash and paid off Next. I lost a net of $5 between the phone, tax, case, and screen protector. I did OK.
If I sold my note on craislist or swappa, id get what...MAYBE 6-700 bucks...so I'm losing a few hundred, plus tax, and likely not get reimbursed for the cases and screen protector.
I think people should have root access, but I agree with the OP. This is a great phone. I've rooted almost every device and have no urge to root my N4.

I tend to agree...I rooted my OPO and then unrooted it after installing adaway. I have email and MDM and my company will reject my device if its rooted.
However, with the note 4, along with adaway, I want wanamxposed and xposed as well. I HATE the carrier bit in the status bar. With touchwiz and the crappy DPI, you barely have any notification bar real estate as it is......add in the stupid AT&T or AT&T MICROCELL, and I lose the whole thing. Wanam helps clean that junk up. After that, I can nix the root.

I had read on here a while back that he wasn't doing any more development for recoveries or bootloaders. Maybe I'm wrong?

Bummer. I hope you're wrong, but I have no evidence to suggest that to be the case. I've been in the HTC world for a little while...
