Is there any way to speed things up? Takes a couple of minutes or so in my car. Quick gps doesn't seem to help. I've only had the MDAC3 since june. Does it need a hard reset?
Most GPS take a few minutes to get a fix.

Try without quick GPS and see what it is like. I have a TomTom GPS Bluetooth dongle and that sometimes takes about 10 minutes to get a fix.

Is it quicker when not in the car?
Unlikley to be anything to do with needing a hard reset. Most likely not getting a good signal where it is mounted.
Try re-positioning it to a more open position in the car.

My Garmin takes approx. 1 minute from a cold start but that is using an external aerial.
My Orbit takes less than 30 seconds outside the car but a few seconds longer inside the car (mounted about 15cm from the heated screen)
Get a lock before you start moving.
Stationary with good sky visibility and updated quick GPS should only be about 30 seconds, a minute if you've moved considerably from the last location GPS was used.
Alter your routine.
Get in car, place artemis in cradle, turn on, start Tomtom.
THEN get comfy, seatbelt, CD selection etc, by the time your starting the car up, Tomtom should be locked.
Also make sure software is up to date, for Tomtom thats version 6.03, I don't know about Garmin, igo etc
Thanks for the replies.
I was in a friends car recently, she was using her own pda. I can't remember what is was, not an xda product I don't think, and it had a flap lifted to allow the built in gps receiver to work. Not only did she get a fix in about 30 seconds, but she got it on the move. Her software was not one of the big names and I can't remember what it's called. I had my MDAC3 on me and while in the car I loaded tomtom. On the way to our destination it got a fix after a few minutes. On the way back, couldn't get a fix for the whole journey.
Anyway, just now I stood outside my house for about 3 or 4 minutes and tomtom wasn't finding a signal. I went inside, downloaded the latest quick gps, went outside and it got a fix in a minute and 3/4. Unloaded tomtom and reloaded it and it then got a fix within a few seconds. I suspect in an hour or so it'll take around 2 minutes again. I guess quick gps does work after all. So it looks like if I load tomtom from cold, it's always gonna take around 2 minutes. Not terrible, but just wanted it quicker.
One other thing, someone mentioned the dopod rom on another forum, and I quote:
"Has anyone else noticed that the MDACIII takes an outrageously long time to get a first fix?
Well here's something interesting... I reflashed the missus' MDACIII using the latest Dopod ROM (which is great anyway), after using imei-check's SIM / CID unlocker. After doing so, in testing so far, it gets it's first fix a LOT faster!
I'll test more over the next few days, but this could suggest a problem in the T-Mo ROM?"
Here's the thread. I posted in it at the end but noone responded yet.
http://www.modaco.com/MDACIII-long-time-fix-t251248.html
I wonder if this dopod rom makes a difference?
Different quality
I have had a HTC P3300 with TomTom Navigator 6.030.0 for 8 month and it would take between 8-30 sek. to get a signal (newer more) nomather if it was outside, in a car, or even in most houses.
I Just bought a new P3300 a few days ago.. and i had to get it switched 3 times becouse the first 2 was so terrible slow to get a signal??? - now i finally have a good one again but i´m thinking that maybe the quality from HTC is very different??
* by the way, my Quick GPS is allways updatet because it does so automaticly when i sync.
Hi there,
I recently bought my HTC P3300 few weeks ago. Considering this is my first pda with gps, i am disappointed that others are enjoying quick gps fix.
My unit takes about 2.5 to 5 mins to get a fix from cold start. A warm start within 4 hrs yields a fix within 30 secs. It gets very annoying especially when i am trying to demonstrate the gps feature to my friends..and they have to wait about 4-5 mins to see the dam thing work.
I download QuickGPS data twice a day and even tried deleting the 2 keys files it downloads and it makes no difference!!.
When i do get a fix, i usually get connected to min 5 sats and on avg get about 6 or 7 sats. So i think that proves my unit has clear line of sight without much obstructions/interferences.
In visualgps, within 30 secs it sees 3 sats. most of the time, but its the fix it that take ages.
EDIT: When ones shakes the P3300 vigorously, do you guys hear some loose piece inside the casing moving about making noise?
Should i return my device back ( although i am out of 7 days exchange period)? Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike
Btw, I use Tomtom 6.03 with B&B V3.7 cooked rom.

Hmm, so it seems I may have a bit of a duff one? I'm not sure I can get mine switched over now, it was an upgrade with T Mobile and that was weeks ago.
How do you configure the artemis to do automatic quickgps updates when synching? I was watching the quickgps screen when I connected it to my pc and nothing happened until I manually clicked download. Also, when it's connected to my pc, does quickgps download from my cable internet connection or does it use my gprs service?

Excellent! I hadn't even noticed the menu/options before you mentioned it. I then connected it to my pc and was expecting to see the narrow download box showing the download process as it normally does in %. But then I looked again and noticed it had already updated with the new file as soon as it was connected. Thanks MicTh.
Quick GPS lost after B&B v4 update (Artemis)?
My quick GPS seems to have disappeared since I uploaded the otherwise brilliant B&B ROM upgrade. Does anyone have a solution for this? I'm reluctant to flash back to O2's own ROM but is it possible to update selectively from the O2 ROM? Or can I download Quick GPS from somewhere?
QuickGPS is built-in in tom's roms. in B&B4, you can find it in ->start/programs/connections
Thanks very much!

Hi,
I am new here and just bought an i780 in S'pore 4 weeks ago, running on i780DXHD1 (Radio + PDA). I have been trying to use the GPS for weeks using the bundled NavFone but it always could not fix on any satelites. In the signal strength, there is no single bar appear. I tried MapKing, it is the same. When i checked on MapKing GPS data stream, it is always empty. when i checked on the dailpad, the GPS logo is active(not crossed). When i turn off the GPS application, the GPS logo is inactive (crossed). With this, can i assume the GPS hardware is working? But why no data stream? I have tried turning on XTRA, but it is the same. Below is my configuration:

co6ra,
First off, you need to stand in an open space before you activate your GPS. I uses Agis software too, and based on my experience when you use it the first time, the signal tends to get a little longer than usual. At times, it can even be over 10 minutes before I get a signal.
To assist your time to get the signal, I would advise you to use the Enhanced GPS found in your settings>system. Clicked on the enhanced gps and select Enable in the XTRA Enable. There is no need to select Auto Download (that is, Disable).
This would mean that the device will also use the base stations to assist in finding the location of your device. Of course the downside to it is you will incur GPRS charges.
Try it and see if you can get the signal.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. For the past 4 weeks, i have been trying all sort of methods; standing at my aprtment balcony, in an open field, in a bus, windows seat, etc. all with at least 30 minutes. When i was at home, i stood at the balcony, turn on my wifi, and kept downloading the XTRA. Sometimes, i cannot see any bar at all; sometimes, i saw a lot of bars, with different PRN number, but all empty (strength 0), and kept changing, but still no fix...

I thought GPSGate is some kind of port sharing program? Both NavFone and MapKing is able to connect to the GPS unit, it just could not fix. Is it possible that the GPS is locked?
Anyhow, will try on GPSGate later. What is the recommended configuration?....
Thanks!
Installed GPSGate, and found that now MapKing is able to connect to the port and receive data. When i check on the GPS stream, it always appear to have the first line with data(some figures deliminated with ","), but follows by a few line with empty data (no figure, but a lot of ","). When i checked GPSGate, the status of the input port is always "GPS data but no position". I have tried just now in an open space, clear night sky, for at 40 mins, it still cannot fix on any satelite....
Help!...is this something to do with hardware?

Since you have not flashed to any custom rom (I hope you did not) why not send your device back to the SSC and lodge a complain that the GPS is not working at all.
If they say nothing is wrong, ask them to demonstrate that the GPS is able to lock in the signals.
I know it is frustrating to have features and yet not working. It can be a case of hardware issue. Let's see how the SSC can help you, since yours is still under warranty.
I wish you would be able to solve your GPS issue. i780 is still a great phone. Let us know how it goes, okay?

According to http://gpsinformation.org/dale/nmea.htm, GGA is one of the most important stream to provide location data. From the log, it seems like the GPS is not able to calculate the current location at all? What is wrong with the GPS unit???...
Ya...i have been trying to put the GPS on everytime i am outside, in total, i think i have tested no less than 10 hours, but still no luck....
co6ra,
From the looks of your log file, it seems that your GPS chipset might not be working. Those coordinates that you have should come from the base station of the phone.
I tried it indoor, and it seems that there are satellites showing, but just could not get a fix on it too (But then, I was indoor).
Your log file might be useful, especially when you bring your unit back to SSC for service.
P/S: My settings are as follows:
Enhanced GPS XTRA is enabled but Auto Download is disabled.
When running NavFone, my settings are as follows:
Don't worry about the external GPS settings, just leave it as it is.
I will feedback later when I am on the balcony. Please be patient.

Yes, what you said is true, the GGA data is the coordinates of your device and determine your location.
I have sent the same log to Agis and Samsung via emails. Waiting for their reply. Hopefully they can solve this by next week, so that i can use it when i need it most as i am travelling to Malaysia now.
BTW, do you guys think that this might be a locked GPS? Anybody has any ideas? If so, how to unlock?
Locked? what do you mean? It shouldn't be and it should work right out of the box.
i am not sure also...read few article on locked GPS topic, which they key in a code to unlock/activate the gps unit.
No luck. Samsung Singapore support does not even want to reply to my email....
Just happen that one of my colleagues travelled to my local office. Has switched back to my old BenQ P50 and let my colleague to bring down the unit back to Samsung S'pore. They claim that it might be a software issue and saying that they are going to flash the latest ROM to see if it helps.

I went through this same thing, I now have Tomtom7 running perfectly and getting a fix in seconds.
It is highly important that you have a working Sim card, correct GPRS or EDGE settings and that XTRA is Enabled!
Use GPS Gate stock settings! ie. prior to running GPS Gate goto External GPS and select com2, then run GPS Gate and use the wizard and let it find Com2.
GPRS/EDGE should try to connect automatically if not then switch it on, exit and restart GPS Gate. Be patient on the first fix it can take 5 mins, it should not take this long though.
Wait until GPS Gate shows that dark green icon in app tray and has a valid position, once it does then execute your GPS software and use (Franson Virtual com 1) default comport generated by GPS Gate.
GPRS/EDGE can be turned off after GPS Gate shows that it has your position and this need only be done once. This has worked on Omnia after many many hours of failure and frustration.
I have noticed occasionally my HTC TP2 is very slow getting a GPS fix using the built in receiver (up to 25 minutes to get a fix whereas normally it is under 1 minute). This can happen at the same location as previous days or hours use in open sky area. Running the built in program QuickGPS successfully has not helped. It seems as if any current built in GPS almanac is not working?
Any idea what key data files if any are needed to enable a fast GPS fix? Maybe they are being deleted by memory cleaners? What could be my problem? I get this problem once or twice a week and use the GPS daily.
Have the same problem here but not all the time.

Google maps is related to the signal quality It's new!
You may want to check that warranty information. Dead TP2 GPS units *do* exist -- I had mine replaced after the GPS simply stopped working after 4 days. If a hard reset + GPS provisioning CAB doesn't work - your device has issues. I did not need QPST on either of our TWO Touch Pro 2's in our household here.

My TP2 is branded Orange. They manage the warranty. I did 2 hard reset to be sure that is not the result of a bad tweak. No result. The only one problem is low signal received. If you are in a kind of desert, the fix works after few minutes but it's not a standard usage. Friday in my car, during 1 hour, no fix. I start the Gsat receiver 5000km of the last usage (Montreal), it works after 1 minutes! I don't expect this result but I expect the same quality of my kaiser (just correct).
What do you mean by "GPS provisioning CAB" it exists cab?
I can't upgrade the radio (see my signature) because the HSPL fashing is risk for warranty of the device
Thanks

There is very minimal risk to warranty of using HSPL as you can flash the original SPL back if you need to return the device.
Try using the HTCGps tool to Warm up the GPS first.
I have issues with mine if I am travelling and attempt to get a fix from cold, if I obtain the fix before moving, it's fairly quick, max 1 min from cold, and never an issue. if I attempt to get a fix whilst moving it takes forever.
ps, GPS is NOT as good as Kaiser was
Cheers,

There is very minimal risk to warranty of using HSPL as you can flash the original SPL back if you need to return the device.
Try using the HTCGps tool to Warm up the GPS first.
I have issues with mine if I am travelling and attempt to get a fix from cold, if I obtain the fix before moving, it's fairly quick, max 1 min from cold, and never an issue. if I attempt to get a fix whilst moving it takes forever.
ps, GPS is NOT as good as Kaiser was

Yes maybe not better as Kaiser but look the two screens on my previous post (the first from me)! You can see the result for outdoor and not in so bad condition... With only two sats at 30%, the TP2 will never fix.
If I need a desert area to fix GPS I prefer use the GSAT module. It's easier to use!

Yes, I think too! The problem, is that I get my TP2 with a small contract. They manage it as free contract. I need to send the phone order before (by mail, not by fax or email). I think, this return will not easy.
Today I will check the antenna plans, just under the back cover, with chance, one is not correctly connected...
Just Flash a new Radio.
I had the same problems, but all is working perfectly now, its a known problem with the launch Radio's on the device.

Are you sure that the level signal was very low on your device before reflash radio?
Which radio have you now?
The Problem if I flash is the waranty and return back to the original radio If the problem is HW. I don't have the original orange radio ROM.

Thanks

Hmmm. GPS Provisioning CAB seems to be CDMA specific when I look at it -- http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=78592. May or may not be helpful for you there.
My Touch Pro 2 got into a funk after 4 days of use and no matter what I'd do to it - hard resets, advanced config, QPST settings I could never bring it back to working. Now, if you're on Orange, then I believe you're using one of the European GSM flavours of the TP2 -- one that has an 'official' ROM update from HTC on their site -- before going back to warranty, reflash that phone to see if it resets the radio firmware.
I have also seen things like this with my HTC Touch (Vogue) when I was running NFSFAN's ROM on it. The GPS died, and the fix was simply to reflash the 'official' ROM on it --- TWICE --- before going back to the NFSFAN ROM. HTC devices do weird things sometimes.

I have branded Orange TP2 with custom ROM. I didn't found this ROM. I dumped mine but I don't know how to rebuild it. I cannot reflash with the standard HTC because it's not the same.
For the cab I don't know if it can be dangerous for the phone.

I sincerely hope you haven't got a dud. I had to have my TP2 warranty exchanged after USB sync was no longer working. The first replacement I got would not find any satellites either.
So back it went, only to be replaced with one that had a badly fitted front bezel ... so much for T-Mobile quality
hello. i tried in com 3...same not works
i did hard reset. Installed google maps, activated gps and stay "seeking gps..." for hours=(((((((((((((

I hate to be the one to point this out, but if you are using a stock ROM and it isn't working, perhaps you should think about doing a warranty repair/exchange. That would seem to be the only thing left if, as I said, you are already using a stock ROM and have done a hard reset.

You always have the option of a bluetooth GPS receiver.
There's a thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523676 with GPS tweaks. Might be out of date though.
I'm not sure if it's in the stock rom but as previously posted make sure you run QuickGPS and download the latest sats. After that run HTC GPStool (google for the cab if it's not installed), click Open Port (mine by default is COm4, 56700 baud rate), then start test. Let it sit a few minutes in an open area (outside). Once satellite used starts increasing stop the test and run Google Maps. Should lock on quickly.
I don't know why GPSTool makes the phone lock on so much quicker, but without running that first i've never gotten a lock on my phone with google/bing.

hello i already tried with htc gps tools, a few days ago, but it couldn find any satellite in that moment.
Ill try again tomorow, thanks for help
Hmm. If you run the HTC GPSTools for several minutes (~10 minutes) does the device start to get hot? That might help indicate that the hardware is working to power GPS antenna. Just kind of a wild guess though.

This is the simplest way to test for a hardware failure. The GPS in the unit draws considerably more power while trying to locate a signal. If the device warms up noticeably within about 15 minutes or so, this will tell you whether the GPS is even activating at all.
i tried again with the gps tool, and it not works. Device is not hot, and google maps keeps seeking gps
edit: hello i was scared, and maybe i did **** on my pants, but i flashed a new rom on phone, ill try with gps again on the morning
edit2: gps still not working,
Satellite Viewed: 16 Satellite Used: 0

Well, if the device wasn't getting noticeably warmer while seeking, then the hardware is very likely at fault. I would recommend that you try to have it repaired under the warranty. If you would rather live with it, then there are plenty of Bluetooth GPS receivers out there that will work wonderfully.
As i say warranty is not an option for me. Well, i really dont need the gps for now.
And yeah i can live with this sh.. just kidding, i love my phone and always will love it
thanks for all help

I had a similar issue. I installed the Energy ROM and it fixed all my issues.
easy fix
The fix is very simple. Go to start/settings/home and turn SENSE/TOUCHFLO off. Now turn on google maps and set your phone somewhere and after it says active close google maps, turn SENSE back on and repeat the first step. For some reason on some roms the GPS will not work with SENSE 2.1 or SENSE 2.5 unless you lock sats with SENSE off forst then it with work with SENSE on.

i turned off sence, then google maps, but after 1 minute i was bored. Closed it, and open the GPS Viewer that came in rom. After 1 minute it shows 1 satelite, 10 seconds later 2 sat. Ill try with google again, i think just needing the correct settings. So thanks a lot. Illpost results here, tomorow
