seeing as Hulu blocked android's version of flash, (they say 'licensing issues' because they don't want us getting their content on the go for free, even tho it's ad supported, they all want us to go through itunes and amazon and pay for each episode of the office or whatever show you like) would it be possible to have the android browser use a different browser profile, such as using it and it shows up as a regular chrome browser from windows to the website? I remember that safari on the mac/pc has this built in with the dev mode turned on, and I know firefox can do it with an extension (probably chrome too), but would it be possible on android to be able to get hulu? (I've not had an android phone yet so I still have no idea. Still stuck with Apple's itorture 3gs, can't believe I bought another iphone after the 3g. only 12 days until EVO!)
I 've read some reviews saying they got to view hulu just fine and others stating the exact opposite.
I dont know what to believe.
stock no, there are many reports of froyo working with hulu though. So now that root has come to the evo maybe they can install custom roms too. if thats the case im sure someone will bake a delicious froyo rom
lol, one day later I get my answer here
The funny thing is I texted the guy at engadget with the Evo 4g review unit (the phone number is in a picture with a sticky not on the box) and he never replied back. Coincidence? lol I think not. I can even show the texts to prove it but I sold my iphone today so i'd have to restore my moms iphone to get the texts back, and I'll only go that far if I really must
copy from engadget
all you have to do is make Hulu think you're using a desktop browser, which can be done simply by entering "about:debug" in the address bar and switching the UAString setting from Android to desktop.

Actually I think about:debug only works in the Android browser. I think they Sense browser won't do that. At least that didn't work for me.

Sense browser will do that. Yes, hulu will load and even start to play sometimes, but I have not seen it actually play more than a second or two of video. I gave up after playing with it for a bit.
I really wish hulu would step up their game and jump on the mobile bandwagon like everyone else.

As far as I know, its not Hulu's fault. It's the licensing agreement(s) with content providers (NBC, Viacom, etc.) that doesn't allow mobile distribution. But I agree, they are only hurting themselves by not adapting to current demands, especially with big, beautiful devices such as the Evo 4g getting into the hands of consumers.
the about:debug setting has been disabled by hulu. you have to find another workaround. you'll find the solution in the xda section for the only device that currently has froyo
Anyone else give this a try? Design is one of the worst I've ever seen but tab swiping is smooth as silk.

How do they get away with calling this 'Chromium'? Don't think Google would be too happy.

Agree, it's really stupid or just a kind of "puffery". It's WebBrowser class (Pocket IE wrapper) based and far away from the real Chromium engine.
it's a good work

For i don't know what reason i couldn't find it from the phone, only when i searched the market form the desktop. But yeah, it works now.
First thing. The design is really poor, the page view area is small, the loading is pretty slow. But the worst thing is the keyboard that opens above some option buttons. If you type fast and without looking at the keyboard, you might push the buttons below instead of space. I know i did.
Second thing. I hate the name. It has nothing to do with Chromium.
Third thing. The swipe to switch tabs is interesting, but the way the tabs are displayed eats too much screen real estate.
Fourth thing. This are just my opinions.
good app for the development stage
please attache xap file here.
Xap
Here is the XAP file - this is the latest build, I have not updated the marketplace version yet.
Still curious - why did you call your app "Chromium"?
P.S. BTW, better to move this thread to Windows Phone 7 Apps and Games, ask mods.
Renamed
It has been renamed to Kromi, app id is: eea60df6-faa9-4323-af06-774259cd6825
Not sure how to find it with the app id, but searching for Kromi yields no results...
The Internet Explorer is better than "Chromium".
It´s faster and looks better.
Please make it look better
Opera Mobile is nice and for me the only alternative
I think this app is in Bazaar now.
It's now bad for a beta, can fullscreen the browser to hide the weird tab interface, and tab switching is the best I have seen on WP7.
There is no bookmark or homepage setting as of yet though, and you cannot press to open context menu (such as open in new tab) but it's still one of the best WP7 browsers around
Is this the same as the one available in bazaar?
After a spirited browsing session here at XDA -- peaking at about 15 tabs and 50 pages -- I find that my browser will permanently increase its memory footprint by 100-300 MB. Even once I close all the XDA tabs, that memory is not freed up until I restart the browser.
I have observed this behavior for years, and always with various versions of my main browser: Opera. This site has many great features, and loads fast, but it would still be nice if this wasn't happening.
Have you guys observed the same heavy RAM usage and/or leak?
My system:
Win 7
i7 920
6 GB DDR3
Actually yes I just did with firefox. In the past I never had this problem actually but lately I only use chrome for xda because firefox always gets stuck.
Firefox is not as bad as ie. But when I load up any page from xda in ie, it is so intensive on my processor that it makes the cpu fan ramp up. Then when I scroll, it is scroll and wait for the page to actually scroll and stop before I can click on anything. It is that intensive on system resources.
well an i7 920 and 6gb of ram is a pretty beastly pc, you don't need a 8-core cpu and 16 gigs (like i have) to surf a forum
It is very normal. Because web is powerful today.
For example, Firefox use a lot of memory: 10 tabs = 250MB memory
Firefox 11 improved memory usage, but still high.
All browsers has the same issue.
Maybe it the time to upgrade your memory. Memory is very cheap today
I am NOT upgrading my pc because one website is not acting right
Obvious, but have you tried clearing cache & temp internet files? There must be a reason because I've got a 2.4 AMD (dual core) with 4GB RAM and I never have the problem. I use Chrome 100% of the time though, so can't vouch for any of the other browsers.
I'm afraid I can't help you with opera but you can try firefox with memoryfox addon. It actively frees memory blocks. Visit www browsermemory.com
One or two times I noticed the problem too but for me it wasn't such a problem to deal with it. I had a quick look on the source of the site and it looks okay, the only active contents are ajax and javascripts, rest is just text, static images & css. The hog might be one of the ajax/javascripts.
I also use Opera (still prefer Firefox though ) and according to the task manager: Memory usage = 16k (average) & Virtual memory = 151k (average) when browsing XDA alone (1 tab).

That's a mighty presumptuous statement. Regardless of if I'm browsing XDA or not, at any of the forums I frequent and if I have many tabs open eventually my Browser begins to Hog my memory, Such is the way the web is.
Do any of the people with the issue use ad-blockers? Ads are generally the culprit with things like this as the site has no (or little) control over what content they load. Also, having 50 flash files playing on separate tabs will definitely have an impact. As tigermess said, the site is mostly just text and images so it's next to nothing.
That would explain why I don't have the issue as I don't have ads turned on.

You are the one making the presumptuous statement. I don't use tabs. I usually have one site open at a time. In the rare instance I have more than one site open, it is in a separate browser session. And that is rare. I have deleted cache and temp . I don't run an ad blocker on my pc.
I am actually running on a fresh (but updated) restore of my hard drive from factory condition. I restored last week. It was doing it before and it's still acting the same way. Both in ie and ff. The only common thread is Eset smart security. I have not disabled to test that. I am leary of doing that here with all of the trash that loads with the ads here.
But when you are browsing fine, and you browse to this web site and your computer slows to a crawl, and the only thing open is this site, then that, sir, is not presumptuous!

Fair enough.
And not to sound like a jerk, but here are your options.
1) Deal with it
B) Don't come to XDA.
In all honesty I could see that you are experiencing problems, but XDA is built on vbulletin. Which while vbulletin scales pretty good to work with XDA, its still a crappy program. Then again the sheer amount of activity on XDA precludes us from using other Forum software, and makes our site run slow on some peoples set ups.
XDA is the site that uses less memory on my PC and i don't have a super machine.. unlike is a pc of the stone age..
I use chrome with adblock plus, my pc is a celeron D 360 with 768 mb of RAM..
What & where's the problem?? I recommend you use an ad blocker and/or another browser..
Flash isn't friendly with any cpu and ram..

iii) Discuss it. Maybe someone with some insight on the back-end of XDA will chime in with advice. Maybe they don't even know some people have a problem and they will be able to make a change on their side. Poor performance and/or ad blocking aren't in anyone's best interest.
Other vbulletin forums don't gobble memory for me. I think that XDA is unlike the average vbulletin forum.
My computer is a single core hyperthreading 3.21GHz <--- (basically a wannabe duo core) with 1gb ram. I use chrome, with adblocker and my browser NEVER lags or anything, even with MANY XDA pages open...

There in is the rub. XDA is a very large forum, we have a full time person, optimizing and maintaining our servers, as I'm sure you can imagine. SO I will hit him up and see if he says anything. But we have discussed this before, in the year or more have upgraded many of our servers to improve the speed.
So while I may have seemed like a jerk, its not because I don't care, its because we are constantly trying to improve the performance of XDA. However, with the numerous different computer setups and internet connections, not everyone is going to have a blazing fast experience, some of that it outwith our control.
Thank you. All we ask is to have your person look into it.
I will do what I can from my end. I don't think it is a vbulletin problem. That and server issues would only account for slow page loads. They wouldn't account for bringing a computer to its knees. When the page loads fully and I scroll my mouse, there is a 5-10 second lag before the page actually scrolls.
I like xda and I don't want to use ad blockers if that is the culprit as that it's how you survive and pay the bills. But there is some bad code somewhere.
I saw a few add blockers that will let you select what adds to disable. Maybe I can narrow it down some.
All we are asking is to look into and not a canned like it or leave it option.

It shows. For me, the XDA experience is great in all the most important ways: speed, features, and community. I guess complaining about memory usage is a bit of a nit pick =P
Will copy & paste / text editing ever be half decent on the S3 or Android in general?
I switched fromy my iPhone 4S to a T-999 and I've been imcreasingly frustrated with the copy & paste system throughout ICS (stock). Some apps don't seem to use the same clip board so I end up having to just type more because it doesn't paste what I copied. Too often it's fristrating to even select a specific portion of text. Even pasting into apps like the YouTube app that Google developed themselves is hit and miss. And no undo function?? Arr. I'm almost considering going back to iPhone because it seems to take an extra 20 steps to do things on my S3 that were a very brief process on my iPhone. I still hate Apple's lack of expanability, built in battery small screen, doesn't work with most of t-mobile's 4g currently, etc. but for such basic functions it can become a nightmare on my S3! Maybe I need to carry 2 phones for the next year or so? Any ideas? Hopeful insights?

'I'm almost considering going back to iPhone"..... Done in less than 5 seconds! The clipboard should pop up in every txt input. I'm not sure why it wouldn't since it's a system app or feature. Undo function? Just hit the backspace. It might be a hassle if you paste a long paragraph or such. I see what your saying.

Yeah, worse though, is whenyou try to backspace this paragraph and you hold down the backspace a little too long and ending up losing some text you didn't mean to lose because it speeds up after holding down the backspace button a while. Forgot to mention, keyboard is also laggy in 1st party apps more often (and not doing anything especially processor intensive) than seems reasonable and the netflix app...omg is that the opposite of fluid. And I can't seem to understand why Samsung thinks it's good to have a flagship device's screen have the contrast cranked up 1000% These aren't as big of issues for me as unreliable text editing but are still areas that iOS has pretty much had down from the beginning.
Sorry if I sound like an Apple fanboy, I just like to use what is flexible abd gets the job done, not promote a cult. Sure it might take a few extra taps at times to do something on Android because more options are available, but when it consisitently takes significant additional time to do seemingly simple functions on a smart phone, it's hard to justify it becomes a functionality problem, not just being "less pretty" than Apple's offering.
Hahaha guilty! I don't copy or paste much so I haven't looked into 3rd party apps. Check the play store. You might find a good app.

It was much worse on older versions of Android before they made those little blue arrow-tab thingies that you drag to select.
At this point, aside from not liking how "locked down" Apple is with their phone/Apps the only reason I can think of that I wouldn't like using an iPhone 5 is I HAVE to have swype.

I thought the Galaxy S3 is awesome, I love it - but - Swype seems to be glitchy Sometimes it won't let me backspace, I try to delete letters or a word and it just KEEPS putting in a word I don't want. It's like having an "annoyotron" built into my phone Sometimes when I press backspace, it keeps jumping to the front of the input screen but leaves the words!
But the single most annoying think about Android phones?: You can't multi-touch multi-select a bunch of emails - WTF?!? If I've got 15 or 150 emails I want to select to delete/move why the ^&@#$*! to I have to select each one individually???!?!? BlackBerry let me multi-touch multi-select quickly and easily and this was YEARS ago! And there does not even seem to be an alternate solution such as "shift-click" to multi-select the way you would in Windows either?
I expect each new version of Android will make incremental improvements to text editing/input. Maybe somebody will make an awesome notepad type program with slick and user friendly text input/editing which would then have a menu item that lets you use it as an email editor also?

Minus plugins and I think certain/all macros. Maths functions are still there though.
You can access all cell as on Excel can. But the CPU of Windows RT not powerful as normal Windows CPU. It maybe slower with the large data.
Also only 2GB of RAM, so yeah, realllllly huge spreadsheets would be slow. But any XLSX you can create or open on the desktop should work fine on the tablet. I'm guessing XLSM would open too; you just wouldn't be able to execute the macros.
You should be able to have as many rows and columns as on any 32 bit computer. How many that is I don't know.
