hardware issues - are there any? - Desire General

My back key is not very positive to say the least and this makes it a little hard to press sometime, or at least to be sure I have pressed it. Not really a fault as such though, or is it?
Anyone got a similar problem? Or have you experienced other hardware issues? Have to say it seems pretty solid other than this.

Maybe the search button if I think of it, but I think there meant to be soft to press, however if you're struggling to click it then that's not right.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

No hardware issues with mine in the slightest! A few software bugs and also the pink tint but I'm hopeful they will get fixed with software updates and even if not - the pink tint doesn't even bother me at all.

[Q] Hardware buttons sometimes unresponsive

Hey Guys I've been putting up with this issue for a while and just wanted to see if it is my device only having this issue.
The issue is that the hardware buttons, mainly the menu, back and search buttons will not do anything when pressed. This occurs frequently for me, although after a few presses it will be back to normal for a while. Sometimes it will not occur for a while, but other times it will continue to occur over and over.
To me it seems like android has registered the button press, but is thinking hard about something else.
I have tried other roms (currently on leedroid 2.2d), I have tried defrost, OD, MIUI, and Cyanogen along with the stock rooted, all of which this occurs at some point. I will try and get a video of it but it's hard to get as it is quite temperamental.
It is getting to the point that it annoys the hell out of me, and am considering purchasing a new phone which I don't want to do.
No one else having this issue I guess. That sucks..
Other users have reported problems with the hardware buttons too:

[Q] desire screen acting weird

I just got a desire (used) and the screen is sometimes unresponsive. Every few times, if i touch it, the screen like goes left and right and studders up and down and isnt responsive to any touches unless you reset the phone, or turn the screen off and on a few times.
Then i try to press something, it do another thing and etc. Also phone is heating alot and i think something is wrong.. or maybe i should try to reinstall fw?
Anyone...?
Mine does this screen thing on some rare occasions, the only solution is a reboot.

For me its very often. Im just curious what might.be causing this problem. Can it be hardware or software...
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Sounds like a hardware fault.
I don't know if you have warranty since you got the phone second hand, but if you have, you better send it.
You can of course do a hard reset first, just to be sure it's a hardware issue.
settings>sd&phone storage>factory data reset
I have already done hard reset when i bought it..but its the same. So i dont have warranty.what hardware part might be causing this?cause maybe i could still repair it?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Better send it in. It's extremely difficult to replace components on the desire. Even service people do a crappy job of it sometimes.

i have installed cyanogen rom and nothing changed...so it's definetly hardware And the problem i think is with motherboard, so i need to get changed it. I will try to look for repair store in my city to ask them if they will be able to fix it and i hope it wont cost me same price that i bought this used phone
Thanks guys for trying to help me.

Screen Flicker - Response from HTC

I have had my One X since last week on O2, I have noticed the screen flicker on full brightness. So I decided to contact HTC about this and they told me that there must be a problem with my device and to send it back to O2 and get a new one.
If that true then the new 1.28 OTA will not fix the problems that we myte have and it’s a hardware fault 
What do you class as a flicker? I notice my screen dimming and brightening fairly regularly under artificial light. Is your flickering more regularly?

You are right. Go and return it for a new one... HTC told me the same!

I'm the same.
Had an undranded One X from phones for you with terrible screen flicker.
I phoned HTC and they said it was def not normal or something that could be fixed with a software update.
I'm just back from exchanging it for a new one and this one is flicker free.
seems there are different types of screen flickers...
i experienced once something like a bad analog tv reception on a very small rectangular portion in the upper left corner when using the browser. you couldn't figure out what was "underneath" it.
it disappeared the same way it appeared...out of the blue
Hi, guys. What do you mean by screen flicker? Im finding that with mine on full brightness it appears as if the backlight part is flickering. Is this what you guys have had? thanks

When you say screen flicker is this happening all the time? I mean are you talking on the home screen and in apps or just when things are loading etc...?

silly game HTC is making us play really....more n more i realize i was stupid not to keep the grey that was running perfectly
I just can't see how it can be hardware...
Mine is flickering at times too.It seems like just about every device that is out there is doing it. I still think its software based, and probably a setting to do with the LCD display. If its hardware then HTC are going to run out of phones...
it's what is being discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592157
and HTC CS said the same to me, do a DOA. So I don't think it's software related. Those responsible at HTC should have let their employees know by now if it was SF related, so there's no indications it is so.
Thinking back to when my MacBook had a flickering problem a few years back and when I remember a Dell laptop at work having had an issue before too; I am sure Apple/Dell simply released firmware updates to fix the problem as it was an update that had caused the problem.
Surely something similar can/will be done with the HTC? Maybe its not happening on all devices and is inconsistant so HTC are telling people to DOA there devices whilst they work on a fix for it (maybe OTA)?
I just find it hard to believe that I have had 2x devices now and both have suffered different issues that it could always be the hardware. It would have to be seriously bad luck for 2x phones to come with issues down to the hardware; usually when this many people are having problems its a software issue over hardware (isn't it?).
I mean mine is flickering slightly on certain screens or during certain actions, I don't want to DOA a second device just to get this problem again as I really do love the phone. If the flickering can/will be fixed then I am happy to wait for that, but as mentioned before at this rate everyone with be DOA'ing devices just for the sake of it as different devices just seem to have the same and/or similar issues.
I have this problem. What is weird is that if I charge the phone fully the problem disappears until discharge at reaching like 80% where it starts to appear again and gets worst over discharge. I'd like to know if I'm alone. If not there are chances an OTA can solve it as it would be some kind of bad power management of the screen. And we all know our power management has some troubles

Well I didn't notice it at all today, but I have noticed it when my device got to around 68% battery. Although it could of triggered before but I might not have been on the device. Whilst I was using it from 100% down to 86% everything was running perfectly fine with no flicker at all.
Could it be an app/widget in the background that is causing it? Then again probably not as we would all of had to install that same app/widget so ignore me there (thinking out loud).
It seems a lot of the initial launch day stock have the flicker.
I got mine on the 5th from Phones4U and my phone and some others sold that day have been returned to the same store.
The one I got today is totally flicker free on all colours. The screen seems totally different. It's not as blindingly bright as my original one but of a much better quality.
It may be software related but this would suggest otherwise.
If the thoery of it appearing while battery is going down it could just be some underpowering of the screen. That sounds logical and solvable via OTA.
I don't think any app could do that

Yeah it does... As I said thinking back to Macbook/Laptop and the flicker (which had LCD screens) they were sorted via a firmware upgrade as I mentioned; which really would lead me to think OTA could sort it and that HTC are saying to DOA devices simply because they don't have a solution right at this moment in time.

Wasn't aware of this MacBook case. Nice to hear.
As I had some troubles with HTC i can tell you that (at least in France it works this way) their support service is like a different company. There is no communication between them and that is wanted for you not to be able to go far in complains. The people at these support center just read there scripts and know less of the product than we do. They can't be aware of early releases issues this way so for them the only solution is a new device. In the end that is stupid because they loose money and their good reputation

Thats exactly how it happens over here mate; would rather do the quick fix (handset exchange) than worry about the problem as they are reading from a script and probably don't even really understand the problem... By giving you another device they can simply bide time to report the problem to the technical team to work on a resolution.
I get that flicker only at lock screen when the notification lock screen its select it. Other than that none. So I can't use that lockscreen

Screen problem?

Hi there, lately I got a strange issue:
Sometimes my screen vould go unresponsive, the phone vibrates twice and It will show the recent apps. The capacitive buttons from the bortom do not work either. Wherever I touch the sxreen the recenr apps list would dissapear, if I touch rhe screen again, they reappear, but otherwise rhe screen is unresponsive. I can switch the phone off, then back on, and also unlock the screen, but then it becomes uresponsive again. This is happening randomly, for intane right now my phone works great. This was hapening on Andromadus audacity b 5 and alsi on sensewich b 7. Anyone else experiencing this or has a solution? Rhanks in advance.

I'm experiencing similar issues on mimicry. Specifically my capacitative buttons are giving me a headache. I'm currently on elite mod with ics touch buttons enabled for safety. Haven't faced the capacitative buttons issue yet since 2days but my entire screen stopped responding to touch(tested with keyboard to make sure the phone didn't hang) randomly...
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
The phone isn't hanging, on sensewich beta 7 when I press the trackpad I get the mouse pointer wich I can move, just the touchscreen and the capacitive buttons are playing crazy. It is also very hard to replicate the issue, so sendig the phone in for repair wouldn't do much good, because there is a good chance for it to behave normally...
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using Tapatalk 2
Same with me dude. I'm able to use the menu button on the keypad to confirm that the phone didn't hang. At times there are only random areas of the screen which won't repond to touch. Guys please help us confirm as to whether this is a hardware or software issue..

Edit: Flashed EliteMod CM7 only to find out that this issue remains to persist. Looks like i'll have to get it repaired.
I am very curious how you would replicate the issue for the service tech. If you just send it in, most probably they would send it back to you saying it's all good. If you do send it for repair, please update this post with the findings.
Thanks,

I was thinking about that as well, and I have set min speed to 844 mhz (stock) and I have the same issue, so I don't think it is that.

+ setting to performance doesnt change a thing either? Sorry, i'm all out of any other suggestions.
Hey i returned my phone to stock froyo 1.34 with s-on.. First day capacitative buttons started working. Second day the non functional horzontal strip in the middle of my screen started working. I'll stay on this stock for a week to test my screen thoroughly and then decide whether its a software issue or hardware. By the way i actually opened up the phone to every part and then put it back together, maybe this is what helped me.

Unfortunately not, I set the governor on performance, but to no avail. I have no idea what's causing it, as it is very random. And it happened to me on both andromadus and sensewich roms, so I doubt it is rom related. I am just too lazy to return to stock and see if the problem persists...

I see that lately a lot of "screen not working" issues appeared. Could it be kernel or ICS related?
Anyone sent it in for repair and already got it back. What was fixed?

Whether I'm on froyo stock or gingerbread stock my capacitative buttons aren't working. Even parts of the screen take random inputs without my interaction. Areas which have the issue respond perfertly to my touch on the lockscreen(lockscreen always works perfectly). I'm giving my dz for service tomorrow. Let's hope. It gets fixed.

Hi,
I'm facing a similar issue ever since I rooted my device. The touch screen behaves strangely at times (becoming totally unresponsive in morning when I use it after around 6 hours of inactivity), the hardware buttons don't respond either. I keep on rebooting the devices, fixing the permissions etc. and then after some time, life comes back to the touch screen and the buttons. They also become unresponsive at random and it is very irritating when you pull your device to call someone or receive a call and then it does not respond .
Also there is a horizontal strip in the touchscreen that doesn't resister any touch (I cannot play 'Frontline Commando' due to this). Strawmetal! is your device still behaving properly after all the fixes you did? Have you reverted to ICS yet and found the phone working properly? This issue is draining all the charm of having a rooted mobile away :crying:
I do not think rooting is the problem here. My phone was rooted and my problem started only a few weeks ago after my son dropped it on the kitchen tiles... Now I reverted to GB stock and this moening I had the freeze once or twice. However, I don't need to restart the phone, power button does the trick for me. All I do is switch off and back on. And the screen and capacitive buttons are responsive again
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk 2
Hi Regius,
I agree rooting may not be the problem but there are chances, though slim, the roms we are using they have some problem. In my case, I have another probable culprit: I was caught in heavy rain. Though I protected my device but I doubt that some moisture seeped in. I rooted it after that so cannot say clearly what is behind the issue. Since I saw that Strawmetal is also facing similar issue, I made a wild guess. Now I'm trying to muster enough courage to dismantle the device and reassemble it. I can also notice a small smudge inside the screen at the top-right corner (perhaps this is a proof that moisture seeped in).
Coincidentally, I used Strawmetal's directions for rooting that he has put at one place. Wonderful effort on his part.

One more issue that I forgot to mention: I cannot pull down the notification bar directly (as we did in gingerbread) but have to manage it via launcher settings. I remember this issue got corrected occasionally when I used sense based roms initially.

Well guys returning to stock seemed to work for an hour. But then it started all over again. So fearing i would lose all control of the capacitative buttons i rooted back and am using Elitemod with the on screen buttons enabled. My capacitative buttons have comepletely gone out( no amount of reboots, kernels would fix it). So 2 weeks ago i took it to a htc service center. Heads up*(I'm living in a metropolitan city). The guy there says that they are not *authorized* to open the hardware of the phone. They only look into the *software issues* which I guess is just flashing an RUU (F*** you HTC). He says they haven't received replacement parts for many phones since 3 months and he recommended me to leave my phone with him so that he could contact me when and if the parts arrive(facepalm). I quietly walked out and went to another service center where they told me the same thing, but that they would send my phone out of the country and I would have to pay $30 for the shipping whether or not my phone is fixed. Charges for repairs would be extra. So all I did was hit up ebay and ordered a digitizer for $40 on August 1st. I got shipped by the seller today. I'll be receiving it by 24th of this month.
In the meanwhile I needed a rock solid phone for my regular use and I knew that if I got an android, it would mostly remain in the recovery mode. So I got myself a Nokia E6($370). This is giving me 6 days of battery backup on heavy usage. Standby is rated at 30 days( I guess it'll give me 20).
Let's hope that I get a working digitizer from that seller and it will fix the issue on my beloved DZ.
Finally HTC go dig your own A**!!
EDIT: Before all these problems started my phone slipped from my lap and slid across the floor without taking a single scratch. This drop might have been the cause.
Hi Strawmetal,
Just one more check: install a sense based rom (4.0 would be better as they are not as heavy as 3.5) and see if the buttons respond! Just a gimmik but I realise by device responds better when one a sense rom.
And HTC is dying its death...they are closing business in some countries, shares are falling

Small yellow patch on screen

There is a small rectangular yellow patch in the upper left corner of the screen that's really only noticeable on a white background. I've had the M8 about 6 weeks and I swear it wasn't there when new. And there seems to be the hint of a new one in the upper right corner.
I've googled and haven't come up with any mention of this with the M8. Are they burn in spots? I can live with it (having tried the Find 7a, if you know what I mean), but would like to know if it's something that can be helped or if it's progressive. Has anyone else seen this?

I developed a spot similar to what you are describing. Mine was on the left side of the phone around where the volume buttons start on the other side. It was probably about a centimeter long and maybe half-a-centimeter wide. It was really noticeable only on white screens like you already mentioned but it bothered me to no end. I don't remember my phone having that either so I believe it developed for whatever reason. I actually sent it to HTC and received a replacement. I guess they deemed it to be a flaw. Hope this helps.

It does, yes, thx. My patch is pretty much the same size (1cm x .3cm, give or take). My concern basically is how it affects the resale value. I bought mine from Amazon, but I'm past the 30 day window for exchanges, so I guess I will have to deal with HTC directly. Did they send you a brand new phone or a refurbished one?
They told me that it was going to be refurbished. Honestly though I couldn't tell it apart from a new one. Mine was perfect with no flaws in any way.
And one more question, if you don't mind. I've done pretty much everything I could to void the warranty - unlock bootloader, soff, root, custom firmware & ROM. I'm assuming I'll have to get back as close to stock as possible (although some have said if it's a hardware issue that's not needed). What was your experience in this regard?
any luck?

I have the same issue - have tried every software to recalibrate the screen but its still just getting worse. Any idea if HTC will do a warranty on the screen hardware if you have unlocked the bootloader and done s-off? I did the unlock through HTC dev if this helps or not... I am confident I can reset the s-off but they will know its been unlocked regardless of what I reset
This is definatley a hardware issue so I would hope HTC being so dev friendly would warrant it still... But looking to see if any one else managed to get this done.
Thanks
I've now gone through 4 M8's, all have developed the same issue. It seems to occur when the phone gets warm (I.E. data use in mediocre service areas). I tried rotating how I put the phone in my pocket with #3, just in case the issue was due to it being bent/crunched, but the spot came back in the same location. I'm thinking that something gets hot and delaminates the LCD under the glass.
I'm about ready to send in #4 and go for #5. I am paying for the Verizon Warranty service, they haven't given me any hassle, just sent me a new device over night. Regardless, I'm disappointed--I love the phone, but dealing with the issue every 3 months is annoying. The longer you let it go the more discolored it'll get, until eventually you can't read the text under the burned area.
Good luck!
today appears on mine after 1 yr of use maybe is because integrated Avago ACPM-7600 power amplifier module check htc one m8 motherboard and the spot and sounds like te ic is overheating , i use a lot of mods on my htc one m8 harman kardon , mod mine is a att ,also 2 sound mods more increasing the sound level i believe is just heat and it kills the screen sorry for bad english
