I noticed Astro lets you backup paid apps within the refund perioid on an app yesterday and made a blog post. Can't see any mention on cursory googling. Is this already known about?

It's a risk that application developers take if they want to allow people to backup their applications and use them freely, if they choose to use copy protection then the application apk cannot be backed up unless the phone is rooted.

Please can anyone expand on some of the security issues that are worrying me. I have been a pocket PC user up till now (HTC HD).
Every time I download an application I am informed that the application will may access one of the following:
1. SD card
2. The internet
3. The local network
As I keep many private things on my Desire I am worried that I am unknowingly "opening doors" for people to steal information.
What should I turn off or on to secure my Desire?
Are items downloaded from the Market secure?
Are items downloaded from other places secure?
Thanks
Sams
Don't worry about those security warnings, I just ignore them

Essentially, yes you are!
When you install an app, it requests certain permissions so it is in your interest to review that list and make sure that the permissions that the application is asking for reconcile with what the application is supposed to do.
For example, if I'm installing a video player, I don't expect that it should need access to my contacts, emails, or SMS messages, so if I installed one that asked for those permissions I would refuse it.

Unlike the Apple AppStore, applications on the Market are not vetted so there is always the potential that someone could post up some malware - it is one of the few downsides of being an open platform.

Virtually every other app seems to want acces to the internet, that does seem a bit dangerous!!
What we need is a nice site setup that vets the apps and makes a small charge for the service. I certainly would be happy to pay for such a service toavoid having my Exchange contacts and notes being used by some nasty stranger.
Sam
^ but then every other app needs internet access. Even if it was just to post a high score. More worrying is when an app wants access to contacts/SMS/ or wants read AND Write access to something.
I was unaware the apps were not vetted.
I have been using my Evo for a while now and every time I upgrade my Roms I have to go through the entire proses in the backup apps.
1. The app asks you if you want to install.
2. The app shows you what privileges the downloaded app will be using.
3. Downloads the app
4. Asks if you want to open or done.
When I have 127 apps and at about 30 seconds an app, this takes forever. My question is, is there a way to do it faster? Like one click all apps downloaded.
Thanks
ditto my man
You have to buy the donate version of titaniumbackup (there is a link in the app that takes you to the page where you buy it). Once you do that, you can do 1 button restores. Just be aware that it might take a day or so to get you license key via email.
An army of pacifists can be defeated by one man with the will to fight.
also mybackup pro does the same thing as the donate version of titanium pro....its actually a little nicer in that there are a few more options as to what you can save
Hi,
I'm the developer of Titanium Backup. So expect some obvious bias
Honestly, I think the strength of MyBackup Pro is that it makes accurate backups of the phone data (sms, mms, contacts, etc) and can do that across any ROM versions.
But if you want to backup & restore your apps with their settings, or keep several versions of an app, or uninstall system apps - in short, everything that has to do with your apps - you should definitely go with Titanium Backup imho. Plus the free version is not a trial - it's unlimited.
For more info or comparisons, please make your own opinion by reading a couple reviews:

One more thing: Titanium Backup requires a rooted phone.
heh, i just paid for the donated version now, have almost 300 apps i need to quick install

Hey guys, I'm kind of at a loss here. I bought ROM Manager Premium on 9/2 and shortly after I bought it I lost my phone and was shipped a new one. The problem is that I can't reinstall ROM Manager Premium even though the purchase is listed in my "Google Checkout" list and the first google account I set up on my phone was the account associated with this purchase. I've sent several messages to Koushik (December 30th, January 7th and January 17th -- I'm not spamming him or anything) but have not heard anything back from him.
Does anyone know of another way to regain the features I've already paid for? It is a great app, and well worth the price, but I can't afford to buy it each time I wipe or replace my phone. Somehow the market is broken.
Thanks in advance!
Have you dowloaded both the premium license and the free application from the market? The premium license is just a key, you still need the application to get the features.
Hey John, I don't have an option to download the license. In the market I only see Rom Manaer and Rom Manager Premium. If I select Premium it tries to bill me $5 again.
Download free version and install from market, download the rom manager file from your gmail and install that, the one in your gmail is the licensing file to upgrade the free version to full version.
You would have received more help regarding this if you posted in Q&A
If you are certain you used the same google account both times, it is a google issue not a developer issue. I don't know how to contact the people responsible for the market, but google does have an extensive help site. A quick search yeiled this article with a few items to try: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?tid=0da4dcf702dbb2d2&hl=en
Are you logged into google talk with the same google account? For some reason there is a link between the Accounts, Market, and Talk...
If that does not work, IDK... I've never had an issue with the purchased apps repopulating...

IMO I think it is appropriate to ask a question about the market which is an app and a purchased app in a forumn titled "Themes and Apps."

Seems to me that Q&A would be more suited to something like "What is rom manager?" than a problem I'm having with the apps market and rom manager but to each their own...
Unfortunately I don't have the email with the file any more and there is no option to resend it.
I've heard of several devices that are unable to access the android market. I was wondering if there is a way to simply have access to the APK files, essentially a market back door. I don't even know if this allowed because frankly, I don't understand how the market works. I'm focusing on the word, "open market".
Reason for the question: I may getting a Nook soon but I read that some of them can't access the market using honeycomb.
Thanks.
If it's a free app, that's fine. Many devs even make the apk available on their website. The market only serves as a convenient search engine and auto updater for free apps.
If it's a paid app, that's illegal and a violation of the forum rules - do not ask again. For paid apps, the market serves as a search engine, shopping cart / checkout, license validater, and auto updater.
In case you are asking about a paid app, i'll save you the effort... even if you did get your hands on the apk, most of them will fail to start or run b.c. the market will reject your phone when it tries to validate your copy of the app on app startup.
I thought I made it clear that I didn't know much about the market which is why I'm asking. I forgot that some apps are paid apps, simply an oversight. Your attempt to offer helpful advice was clouded by an unnecessary admonishment of my actions. I'm very well aware of the forum rules. Simply stated, you're making it sound like I'm trying to steal from developers, I'm not. I'm simply trying to find a way to get "free" apps that are listed as such on the market using a device that does not seem to have access to the market.
You could always grab the Amazon Appstore .apk and use that to search and download applications, too.

wow... that didn't even occur to me--thanks!
market enabler is a neat app too. It lets you fool the market into thinking you have a different phone.

Hi, Is there a way to re-link free apps to the market without having a TiBu backup w/ link (to use with the Market Doctor) and without having to reinstall every app that is missing the link?
Or even an app that will show me which ones aren't link and allow me to reinstall them from the market?
Thank you.
I think I read somewhere that when people had done a complete wipe on their phone, they then went to set it back up and a screen asked them if they wanted to use the Google backup and restore. Not sure where the info is stored, but you can go to menu - settings - privacy to see what i am talking about.
Try an app called "Root Tools", I saw in the market comments that it helped a few people restore their market links. A recent update took the entirely free app and made some options paid (without warning, and before this there wasn't a paid version) so I reverted. If that's now a paid feature let me know and I'll upload the old apk. I'm not a pirate and don't consider that pirating, but some may I guess.
