Hey,
Okay so I've had the desire for around a week now and thought I would post a few points which I think are relevant, sort of like a mini review. I came from a G1 and therefore this isn't my first taste of android.
The Software
The software performs so much better on this phone than Android ever did on the G1 (even after the various amount of hacks, patches etc to try and get it to go faster). The 1ghz processor definitely makes a difference as applications are loaded up instantly, web pages load fast (and almost instant) on 3G and movies run perfectly.
The Screen
Most people have noted a pink tint on the screen and I'm not going to lie to you, this does exist however, don't let this put you off from getting the screen. The AMOLED is truly beautiful, bright and colourful and blacks really are black (I was waiting for a youtube video to load and thought the screen had gone off it's that black). While there are pink tones (especially in Google Mail) they're not really that noticeable and only seem to show on a certain shade of grey, it's the sort of thing that wont bother you unless you want it to.
The Keyboard
The keyboard is truly magical! Seriously, I never ever hit the right key yet the predictive text always seems to know what I want to type. It also seems to be a multitouch keyboard and I can type fairly quickly on it, almost as quick as I could with the QWERTY on the G1.
Voice to Text
Voice to text is quite accurate even with my Brummie-British accent however, it's not installed by default. It should be however, expect it in a rom update very soon.
The Battery
Although everyone else may not be, I'm very impressed. Lasts around 1.5-2 days which is double what my G1 ever lasted. This is with heavy usage, bluetooth usage and even live wallpapers.
Anything else I think of I'll add, if anyone has any questions feel free to ask
gratz mate, seems like you might be one of those lucky guys whos phones were not faulty at all lol
I came from the HTC Hero and agree with all of the above.
A lot has been said of the screen but I certainly don't notice the pink on the screen. I'm not even convinced it is there! A lot of the negative comments seem to be coming from people who have never seen a Desire but have, in my opinion, been mislead into thinking that it is a serious problem. I don't think it will be an issue for 99% of users.
To me the screen is far, far superior to that of the Hero.

Hi,
Do you have a Desire or are you one of the mislead?
Thanks Brummiesteven
Hopefully this time next week, I will be emailing FedEx/Customs (I really do not know who it is) to have my phone released to me. Definitely appreciate the review. Glad to know that the whole "pinkish tint" issue really isn't that bad
I agree too. Got my phone last Saturday and have loved using it since. Other than the weather app occasionally needing to be manually updated I've not had any problems. It's a nice change from S60 5th my Samsung on I8910.
Totally agree! In fact, you just wrote half of the text for my review =]
One thing I'd correct is re: keyboard. Since I'm not a native English speaker, I have text prediction turned off as I need to type in Lithuanian too. I hit the right keys with 99% accuracy (or so it seems) and I can confirm that it's just as good as using full QWERTY on G1.
Thanks for sharing your views.
It was all going fine till you mentioned it understanding brummie, c'mon

Hey brummie, thx for the review! I'd appreciate if you could answer some questions concerning long-time usage:
- Has the limited space for apps been a problem so far? I don't plan on installing more than 1 game, but still...
- Also, is there lag/slowdown on normal usage or after a few days? My WM6.1 phone is really laggy and I don't want to buy a laggy phone again...
Oh, and also concerning the keyboard: How hard is it to really hit the right keys? (I write alot in Swiss German, and there aren't even printed dictionaries for it )
Thanks!

To be fair I wasn't really hinting at brummie but just trying to make the point that it actually works with "accents". These sort of things only usually work if you're American

Limited space hasn't been a problem so far, only 72 apps atm though (including stock apps) and only 21.40mb avaliable =/.
No lag/slowdown after a few days, you don't get this with android fullstop. My G1 was never off (as in shutdown or restarted, and neither is the desire).
It's not hard to hit the right keys, I just have fast thumbs and type at (approx) 75wpm on the phone. If I go slower I hit the correct key everytime.
I don't think the reviewer meant that the keyboard was hard to type with - he was just impressed that if you use it with elbows or toes or whatever it'll do a good job working out what you were going for.
It is certainly on a par - if not better than the iPhone, which is a credit to HTC. It's obvious that it has shook up the Apple house - they are running scared hence the gazillion unwarranted lawsuits have slung (a la toys out of play pen) in HTCs direction (I mean - swipe to unlock - c'mon!)
[edit] you just beat me to it! lol

anyone have an idea what happens with words added by the user to the dictionary? in symbian there was about 250 words allowed or something like that and later they were getting wiped or at least my nokia did wipe them :S
There's a user dictionary for your own words but no idea if any get deleted. Can't see any reason why they would, I dont have many myself to test though.

can you add new words as you type a message or you have to go into the dictionary and add them there?
the reason why they got deleted is probably my phone is messed up, every now and then i cant send texts unless i reinstall the software, so no more nokias for me

Flash
Hi all.
Got my Desire from Virginmobile UK today. Great phone.
Tried to play a video on the BBC website & got a message saying that the phone is not compatible. I was under the impression that Flash compatibility existed with this ROM. No ?

I believe that I have read somwhere in this forum that there is a update/upgrade for the camera on blue angel which helps get clearer pics. I have done a search but can not find it. My actual version is2.21 Build 17084.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=ERK_Patches_13x
So anybody tested them?
Does it make any difference..........i mean, there is from the starting point not so much to expect from a vga camera :?
I currently have 2.21 17084
Thanks for your quick reply! I just don't understand what this means:
"Note this is a higher build than but lower version than"
Which one is the latest/better version. Which one should I get for my blue angel, Fix_camera18157.sa.cab or Camera patch 10080401? I have camera version 2.21 build17084?
Do I just install the cab from the blue angel?

And yes, .cab files are just copied to the PPC and executet for installation. Note that the .cab file will delete itself on installation
Thank you! It did help quiet a bit. The pictures are sharper now

so which cab file you did you get?
I just tested them both.
Now this is a mini test on only a few pics. in bad light, and a minimal difference on the pictures, but i found the 2.11 (Build 18157) to be just a ini mini little bit better, but in no way the same quality as you se on screen.
Anybody got an explanation on why its much better on screen (just with the camera active) than the actual picture that comes out of it??
For me it seems quite unlogical that the lens can capture a much better quality to put on the screen, but ones you take the picture the quality is much whorse.
How does this makes sence?

Yep, but why the h... not fiks it so it uses the lens full capasati.
Im beginning to get a bit frustrated over using so much money on a device thats not even finished.
I gotta say, that if SonyEricsson comes with a new P900 type of device thats more like the BA, i will consider turning back to Symbian.
Symbian has its own troubbles, but they are very productive when it comes to updates and getting things fixed, which definantly is not the case with HTC/Microsoft and probbably the 5000 companies they outsource to
Well I went form the P900 to the MDAIII, only since I got it free.
The P900 is a VERY nice phone, its small gives you addresses in and not just phone numbers, has a lot of good apps and when I go out I still use it due to the size.
The MDAIII, well its a PPC, and thanks to this forum you can infact fix a few of the issues like the language. Its far form perfect but its one hell of a toy if you want to waste time palying with it and trying to work out how to make it better.
I think it all about maket share, what is the point of having a PDA as a phone with a 5meg camera all in one unit if you can sell all three.
The technolagy is around, look at the Sony cameras. Shame but what can we do as the differences between men and boys remains the price of their toys.
Ha ha ha, I know MDAIIIUser........
It's just that I use it also as a tool in my business.
I have a lot of tools, and if one of them don't work as it's suppose to, it's just right back in their the next second.
I get no mercy when I'm out on a job, everyone don't get any mercy when they are on a job. If it's not finished........Well you simply just don't get the money. If it's not made by the regulations, you get a ticket to the court room, and don't expect it to anything else for you than cost a hell of a lot of money.
So you see, it's bugs me quite a bit that i buy a device at this price that’s not finished. There are major software troubles on it, making the phone part useless from time to time.
It's sold as BT compatible, what BT compatibility are they talking about??? Everyone is having trouble with it no matter what headset they are connecting to.
It don’t even have the most basic function found in every single phone sold world wide, a button lock that actually locks the device. I was sure that it was something I missed, just couldn’t believe that it weren’t in there.
And I don’t care if this is a PDA/Phone and not a Phone/PDA, they can’t be that thick in their heads that they don’t see this.
The hardware is bad, it’s getting more and more loose every day, the sliding keyboard is soon to become an auto sliding keyboard. Just hold it vertical and it will slide down all by itself.
I had the whole outer case replaced because the stylus was sliding out by itself. Now about 3 weeks later it’s so loose that it in the next week or so will be completely loose again. Then it’s in to service once again, me not having my tool which I spend a good amount of money on software for business use. Back to paper and then by hand doing the job in the office.
Now I’m guessing that this will happen again, that being the 3’rd time. Then it’s a full refund by law, and if the software isn’t ready at that time, I will claim a full refund or else ill just hand it over to my attorney. Buy a laptop for the car, a P900 again and then the irritation is over, and I can work in peace and quite.
The screen occasionally makes a high frequent sound when I’m talking in it, making it quite difficult to concentrate on the conversation. Unfortunately they didn’t have any new screens on stock when it was repaired the last time……….
I had absolutely no hopes for the camera when I got it, as I said earlier, what’s to expect of a VGA camera, and I don’t care, even though it would be nice to actually have one that could produce something just a little bit useful.
If I where the IT responsible person in a big company, I certainly wouldn’t recommend the boss to get 50 of these, the work load and support needed is simply just too much.
And all that said, ill properly end up with the MDA IV anyway *LOL* , what an idiot
Hum!!! Got out of bed on the wrong side or did wify have a headache??
Ok I admit the hardware is crap, my keyboard is auto eject at the momnet and the only thing I am REALY happy about is the fact that it has a metel case as I have dropped it (or was it threw it on the floor). My 5 yearl old girl has better developed teath than the BT on this thing. Yellow is a nice color if you realy like it but maybe not on a high depth screen. Don't even let me go down the rest, I will sound like you.
All I can hope for is the MDA 4 and that I get that one free as well. If its only to update wiki. Grin.
Thanks for your post put a big grin on my face.

Well let’s not take it all out on the phone.
I think it would be more fair to get that book out with the title “101 uses for a BA owners head”.
It’s going to be the worlds most paperless book ever sold
Well maybe we could get some highly respected brain schrinks expert opinion in there, then it at least would have one page, “I simply do not now”
I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not the TP2 still has the keyboard problem from the touch pro?
What's the keyboard problem from the Touch Pro?
Yeah
What is the problem?
Please let us know
I don't know what problem touch pro keyboard has
I searched around and I think this problem is keyboard lag. However, I don't think it exists on the TP2, as the review here (to read it, you'll probably need google translator to translate the page) only mentions how quickly the device runs and how amazing the keyboard is, there's nothing about keyboard lag.

Actually, I'm curious to see if the lag is still there. It is still completely awful on the Kaiser.
For everyone who has it, how is it thus far?
Compared to the Kaiser this thing is a dream! I press a button and the character appears on the screen at the same time! It's wonderful!

There is no keyboard lag whatsoever that I'm experiencing with my Touch Pro 2. I typed a sermon summary from a church's sunday service superbly with the keyboard. Loving it so much!
nope, it's lag-less
woops, forgot about this. hahaha.
I was talking about the countless number of keyboards breaking on the touch pro.
Tons of threads about it over at ppcgeeks.
It's something to do with the ribon or something inside and it breaks or pops out,
and then you're keyboard decides to stop working.
My friends has gone out like 2 times on him, and had to get 2 other replacements,
and this is within the past 4 months. lol.
But I already got the TP1.

only way I could get it was if I bought it at full retail

i kinda find it hard to believe that AT&T would mess up the keyboard THAT much. That might just be a quick photoshop moc-up or some such. IF they to stick with that ugly keyboard design, i doubt they will sell many of them.

Here's the thread that started May 24th on this. Check post #25 for my personal mythbusters before getting all worked up over the Fortress picture...
Not to mention there's no buttons specific to ATT found on that keyboard. Frankly I don't care of the letter layout, as long as it keeps the spaced out keys.
Now I just have to decide if I want to keep my HTC Touch HD or sell it for a TP2. I still have to sell my treo 750. I did just upgrade the rom to WM 6.5 and it is working pretty good. I want to see some difinitive pics of the AT&T version first. They always seem to mess up a good thing.

Uhhh i wouldn't say that you shouldn't be expecting a keyboard change. Whether it will be the severe i dunno but it will get a keyboard change that will suck. If you look at att/cingular history they either leave the keyboard alone(which is rare) or they mess it up. I think the only they improved with the wizard (Cingular 8125). I think they left the tytn and the tytn2's keyboard the same and then they ruined the touch pros. I would say expect the worst and hope for the best.

I guess I should've been more clear. I meant you can expect a change from the picture that was leaked. But if you can take anything from history then they're likely to change it from the way it was designed by HTC too.

perhaps, but even with their history, i don't think ATT has ever changed the Psychical design of the keyboard, just changed what the keys themselves do. It would cost them too much time and money to 'redesign' the keyboard itself for it to have a different psychical layout. Changing whats printed on the keys is one thing, psychically moving them around is quite another.
So while i expect they will have different keys, programmed differently on their own version, im pretty sure the original layout, spacing and all, will remain intact, so it will resemble sprint/t-mobile versions with all their ATT crap on it instead. Now, given their history, they will likely change the top row numbers in to their own BS system of whatever they want to put their, and program the numbers as Fn of other keys, just make it more annoying for everyone..
In retrospect, i dont see ATT changing the phone anymore than sprint has with their color scheme and back cover. (which while it looks different, its not something that HTC has to make a new manufacturing line for)

I can say that is true since att didn't change the wizards keyboard design it was cingular that did.
I've been saying this for a while, Speech to Text is a feature of 2.1 and not a Nexus exclusive feature. The Desire's website (http://desirehtc.com/) pretty much confirms it on the "android page".

Launched in January 2010, and known in the trade as Eclair, this is basically an update to the operating system. In laymans terms, it's a sexier looking interface. But it's not quite that simple.
Now, for example, your Wallpapers can be animated, injecting your screen with a new lease of life. This works particularly well with the AMOLED screen.
Rather excitingly, it brings us into a realm where voice-to-text is a reality in all text fields. Imagine sending texts or emails simply by talking to your phone. Now do it, we're there.
A widget offering constant weather reviews is now possible and this can be echoed with news feeds and multi-tab functions. Check this out on the HTC Desire, it's gorgeous and with GPRS functionality it's specific to your location.
Photo albums have been enhanced with a cool new 3-D view which is really slick. All the better to showcase your holiday pix.
Top this off with helicopter views of your interface and pinch to zoom capability and we think you've got a lovely little armoury of new tricks to keep you informed and amused.

Nice, but I hope it is quite accurate, especially for people who english is not their primary language. This kind of people usually has distinctive "accent" which could produce inaccurate to text translation.
I wish that it has that feature, ... BTW, Droids owner have been updated their devices to Android 2.1, .. does that feature work for them? anyone knows?
Edit: is this an Official HTC Desire page? I mean are they affiliated with HTC?

Sure is - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAG66ts_R3M
That vid is of the Nexus which hasn't been released outside US yet, which makes it even more impressive

Not sure if it'll support Geordies though!
I downloaded the htc keyboard and put it on my Milestone(selling for Desire) and it has the text to speech and it works ok but not all the time and it takes a while to do it not something i would use tbh.

My thought exactly Someone DEFINITELY needs to learn to spell DEFINITELY correctly
OK so v2t looks like a DEFINITE then.
Can anyone confirm whether it has active noise cancelling like the N1? I have been told that it doesn't but can't remember where I read that.

you are right, .. it does NOT, that is one of the differences between N1 and Desire, ... HTC justifies that the reason is to bring down the cost of the HTC Desire
stuff.tv did a quick review of the HTC Desire yesterday, and they specifically noted that it doesn't have the voice-to-text feature. I'm not too worried, as i'm sure this can be downloaded somehow later with a custom keyboard, as mentioned previously.
A very good contact at T-Mobile called HTC for me today and they said...
"Sorry for late mail, good news for you, spoke to HTC the handset doesn't come with the speak to text function, but there is an app call voice text which will do this and is already available. I will get back to you on the stock level asap"
Searching the market for "voice text" finds it. It's by a dev called Alex Byrnes and he states that it works on all android versions.
Edit: sorry, my mistake, works on every android app, NOT on every android version.

Thanks for clarifying mate. Not questioning your answer but how do you know that? I can't remember where it was I read about the noise cancelling feature.
He is right. I don't remember where I read it either, but it definitely says somewhere that it won't have one. Also, there's no visible second mic on the phone if you look at any of the pictures.

here ya go ... I read it in many places, but this one is from "SlashGear"
.... You have to delve inside the chassis to find the main differences. The Desire lacks both the active noise cancellation and the triband HSDPA/WCDMA of the Nexus One, ....

definitely no voice to text...
I've had my Desire 2 days - got the completely unbranded sim-free one; absolutely no mention of speech or voice to text anywhere - apparently the only way to get round this is install some dodgy Verizon keyboard which is a real shame...
Just wanted to start this thread, for users to share there overall experiences of the desire. The good the bad and the ugly etc...
Enjoy
Well so far so good.
I've had it since Friday (Tuesday now) and tbh it makes the HD2 looks pathetic. Don't get me wrong the HD2 is agood phone, but compared to the competition its looking long in the tooth.
Battery lie seems poor but i can't put it down lol, so probably fine.
My only gripe is the lack of SD support (I know 2.2)
I hope Froyo arrives on the 23rd, if not i'll be kicking myself not getting a Nexus One.
I feel the touchpad could be used to great effect, but not utilised. Mouse cursor in browser?
More access to the internal memory would be good too.
agreed about apps2sd, it's the only niggle i have with the phone. there's more apps that i want and can use than the phone can handle.
here's hoping 2.2 is sooner rather than later

Why would you need an actual mouse cursor? You can already use the trackpad to select links.

saves you scrolling through hundreds in a page. you could just move the cursor over the link and click in.
sometimes i can read a page, but my finger is too thick to select the link, however if i had a cursor i could.
Also would mean strategy games like starcraft could be played with ease.

Just buy a capacitive stylus.
For me the main disadvantage of the Phone (and actually Android in general) in comparison with Winmo is that it does not want to sync with the corporate callendar and contacts via bluetooth natively.
I know I can install htc sync and sync via usb, but it requires me to carry on the usb cable everywhere I go...
I know I can install "Missing Sync" for windows but it cost ~40$ and it's a bit too expensive for an application.
Second - APP2SD of course
Third - battery life (I know - screen)
best regards

My initial impressions were positive, to the point of canceling my Iphone purchase and going for the Desire instead.
However, that swiflty changed. After much time spend arguing with my network provider, the independent seller and finally HTC support I am left dumbfounded by their logic and inane software restrictions.
To explain, all the phones in the UK, or at least the majority of them are region locked for some reason. The phones provided by the networks themselves are region-locked to the UK only, meaning not being able to type in any other language and if one goes abroad runs the risk of not having correct time, date, weather, radio and so on as the phone's 'locale' settings do not adjust. What is more frustrating, the demo phones available in the same networks' stores or independent dealers work normaly (having locale and languages for all european languages and some asian) but even when buying an unbranded one it is still region locked (although with a couple more choices...).
To promote such a phone as a flagship product and not being able to type in another language, a function my 6-year old backup phone handles with ease, is beyond words.
Generally speaking, a great phone, however, having said that let me say this: I find that I lose coverage very easily whereas I didn't with other phones I have had e.g. Blackberry Bold. I can find that if I leave my phone on the bedside table overnight, it loses coverage for some unknown reason. This is a real downer for me as I rely on having coverage very much.

Hi! I really think thats odd! I've bought mine unlocked in Portugal and it didn't have the Portuguese language but had English and French. When i first put my Portuguese sim card, i didn't select any of the languages (there wasn't Portuguese) but the phone is on Portuguese since i'm using a Portuguese sim card.
Nevertheless, in such powerfull phone and OS, there is (almost) a way to bend such limitations.
For instance, using morelocale app (on market) and i just love the HTC_IME_MOD (you can find it here).
Try these and then post your review

I don't have such problem. Maybe it means a faulty device?
Thank you Necroman_AI for your tips. The morelocale application I hope that it will make the phone at least work fully when I am in a country outside the 3 it seems to natively recognise.
I am a new user of android devices so I am not yet familiar with the mods but I will try them. However, this is stlll very unprofessional from a company that aspires to compete in the high-end area of smartphones.

Hi again! I don't really know is this is HTC fault, you haven't said if you bought it unlocked or in a network. Networks sometimes limits certain abilities of the phones. But morelocale will solve your problem and search for HTC_ime_mod here on xda and you will get what is the best Android keyboard for me! It's just an app and you can install it like any other app. It's really good and so much better than the regular HTC_ime that canes with the phone...
