I still don't know what to choose: N1 or Desire
Personally I preffer the look of N1 over Desire, but after I have red so many complaints about missing calls because of the low volume speaker I wonder if the Desire has a better speaker or it's the same
Actually some devs are trying to get an extra volume for N1 so a slight loudness of the Desire over N1 is ot sufficiant to convince me
vegetaleb
I used to have a N1 before I decided to switch to the Desire. My reasoning was as follows:
1. The soft touch keys on the N1 were a hit and miss at times. I thought the implementation was not effective as it should have been. Hard buttons on the Desire, I thought were the best option.
2. Even though the N1 has some technological advantages like noise cancellation, I wasn't convinced that it was such a big deal. I felt my voice echo a couple of times during calls, so that was another no no.
3. Google's support was pathetic TBH. Buying something for over $500 and not being able to talk to a person was the last thing I wanted. What would happen if my phone stopped working and I was stuck between google-htc for support?
4. As with speaker loudness, Yes, it was far too low. Also, the back cover has a very small opening for the sound as against the Desire.
HTC being the manufacturer would give me better support and besides if the necessary softwares are ported over to the Desire, then it is good enough. I used the N1 for a month and TBH, even though it is good, I won't be missing it once I get the Desire. HTC, I assume has learnt and corrected the mistakes it learnt from the N1, I hope....
My 2p's worth of opinion.
Read the reviews even comparing the legend and the Nexus .. the ringtone volume is almost the same .. so the Desire is for certain the same.
Google Nexus One 79.1db
HTC Legend 79.7db

@s1977 ... but you don't have the Desire yet .. correct?
Yes but there is something weird with Gsm Arena db test because the N1 is then louder than Milestone and iphone 3G while all the test proved it was way lower
Unless they tested the physical potential of the speaker directly on the circuit with a db meter, meaning the n1 speaker need lot of tweaking

the desire is not the legend, so we have to wait.
If holes in the back is the problem, then maybe drilling more holes will help?

Yes, really. The Desire may or may not have the same dust problem, we don't know yet. But the post about dust was an answer to someone talking about drilling holes in the phone, which obviously may lead to dust getting in where it shouldn't.

Gettingtired, I was being sarcastic by saying "really?"
I know it's possible to get dust under the screen. However, I read somewhere in the forum that the Desire has some sort of screen over the front and back speakers.
I have had both phones and can honestly say the Desire is much better than the N1 which U also love.

Not much louder to be fair but it vibrates in my pocket so its OK
So the Desire is just slightly louder if I understand and if N1 get an audio hack it would be the same right?
Ok so to sum up :
Desire advantages:
+ SENSE UI (but N1 can have it through ROM)
+ Slightly louder speaker (N1 devs are working on an audio hack)
+ more RAMs
+ HArdware buttons under screen
N1 advantages:
+ Better look (my personal opinion)
+ Speech to Text (Desire has text to speech)
+ Dual mic for cleaner conversations
+ Available right now while Desire is being delayed
Double post

Will like to have HD2 with WM7, which isnt gonna happen. will love to have HTC desire, but hearing rumors its not gonna work with TMobile here in US. Not sure anymore what to do .. anyone plz help ...
Why dont you buy a nexus one and put the htc desire rom on it for the sense interface?
well, did my research about N1, not a bad phone. may b not that different than desire, except Less RAM and no radio, also read it having problems with screen, with scratches and cant be pocketed?

BTW, the screen of N1 is exactly the same as in the Desire.
regarding your concern between HD2 and Desire I think the question is wither you like WinMo or Android, ... I personally would prefer Android as its more stable and does not need alot of tweaking to make it stable (unlike WinMo devices)

I think he's referring to the article (on Engadget, I believe) about the guy whose N1 suddenly developed a majorly cracked screen while it was sitting on the desk charging, and that after contacting HTC, they said something about this possibly being due to too much pressure in tight pockets etc.
strange ha? , but i just hate htc for making such a great phone with a bad speaker,
everywhere i read i see that everyone is saying that the speaker is bad, and the earpiece volume is still something that i didn't get any confermation about its sound quality.
and the thing is i love android and i love the Sense interface, but i work in the most noisy place you can imagine and my current pro2 is really helping me a lot when it comes to sound quality esp from the earpiece.
i don't konw if i made the right decision i really love that phone, but i can't risk of having a bad earpiece.
what do you think? , should i wait and see the desire hd , or whatever will come by the end of the year with that 3.0 version of android , or just get myself the phone that i love?
I have the strangest suggestion for you: Try it out yourself!
So.. either give the sound quality a check with some demo unit in a store or something. If they don't have one, perhaps even ask if they can turn a Desire on for you so you can check the sound yourself.
Even better! Find someone (a friend, coworker etc) who owns a Desire. Then give the sound a try -right- at the place where you think it's important (e.g. noisy workplace).
Waiting for another phone or Android 3.0 could always be worth the wait. Who knows.. But there is absolutely no guarantee that the speaker/headphones will be better on that phone/those phones.
And since you don't really have any conformation about the earpiece quality yourself (and I guess you think it's really important), I think you should really give this a good test yourself.
Read: no matter what phone you buy, always check the quality yourself. Don't believe what others say. Perhaps someone else their quality standards is higher than yours, or they think other stuff is more important than you think.
well , you're very right, but the problem is that htc agent in Egypt is treating us like they are selling diamond , you can't try a device, if it's opened it's yours, and if you're lucky enough to find a demo device it's not for use with a sim card, you can try the software and everything except not making a phone call
even contacting the support is a night mare, as they are not authorized to speak their only job is to accept phones and send it to repair shops that belong to the agent , but they can't comment on anything.
even e-mail and phone support on the website , they don't provide any help at all
i don't have any freind who has the htc desire, and that's why i didn't try it
but don't you think that htc is really making no effort in providing us with better hardware.
i mean , why didn't they just make this phone with stereo speakers and aluminum body? and a 4inch display , simply cuz it's for the desire hd that's everyone is talking about
my point is i am begining to feel that these companies are really leaving problems in their devices , so we can think of upgrading our phones more often than we do
The speaker is indeed aweful, but I bought an x-mini capsule speaker and its better then any phone speaker I've ever used! Hope I helped.

if ur from the UK then order one via phone from tmobile and you get about 8 days to return it so you got 8 days to test it
The speaker is ok the problem is the placement of the thing... it's in the back of the phone making it less audible.

The screen might be a personal thing. Personally I love the amoled screen, very nice to watch movies etc And the touchscreen is also very nice, very sensitive.
Guess supasye means the somewhat (possible) purple hue and the multitouch bug (which you probably never going to notice with normal usage).
My screen was very purple, so I've send it back for repair. Unfortunately the replaced device has some weird problem with the touchscreen (gets less responsive after some time, will be replaced now as well).
But as far as I can gather that's all an exception. I have multiple friends with a Desire and those all work perfectly. I can't wait until I get a new Desire back, and can start enjoying the device again!
As for output quality, I think it's perfect for normal usage. You can always buy some better quality headphones or something.
But then again, my standards are not that high for this. I don't use headphones that much and when I play music it's usually over bluetooth (in the car).
thank you all for sharing your opinions
like i was saying , my point is that i feel that htc is becoming more and more a monopoly player with no competition to face it.
it's like the story of lamborghini and ferrari , i see htc as the ferrari but i want a lamborghini
i see lots of people saying that the speaker does not work well , yet i don't see any actions from htc worldwide to improve it , much like apple with its phone antenna problem.
it's like those big companies refuse to say that they did something wrong , or even try to fix its problems.
htc in egypt is very bad in customer service , that's why i read a lot of reviews so i can make sure that i am buying the right headset.
sadly i can't buy the desire from outside Egypt for two main reasons, one it will not have arabic , my language, and two i will pay about 30% as taxes and customs.
moreover i get the feeling that once i buy the desire , a new model will be released with everything corrected, which makes you think , did they make such mistakes on purpose?
i don't like paying lots of money for my phone , and i don't like upgrading unless i am convinced that there's a real value being added.
but with all the great things that i see in the desire, i feel that waiting will be better due to that fact that i feel that htc did on purpose make the desire with speaker problems and 3.7 screen , so they can sell the next desire with a 4 or 4.3 screen and a stereo speaker.
I don't believe they create 'bad devices' on purpose, just to sell more of the next generation. E.g., put a crappy speaker in product X and then improve a bit for product Y. As a setup plan to sell more product Y devices. Although.... with some of the HTC products in past I'm not so sure lol
What HTC does, and has been doing for all along really, is create a nice device. And with almost the same internals and technology, bring a slightly improved version of that device on the market later (a bit like your example with a Desire, and then later a Desire HD).
HTC pushes out lots of models. When you buy one, a somewhat more improved version of that model will be out in a few months. And perhaps another one after that.
Then a new 'generation' devices will be release, and the same thing happens.
It's a proven and working strategy which seems to work very nicely for HTC. If you wait for the 'Desire HD' with bigger screen and stereo speakers, by that time something else is already around the corner.
However! Since those things cost quite some money, you have to be really sure it's what you want. So if you are not too sure about the Desire and actually rather wait for the 'next Desire', it's a good thing you can wait.
Not too many people (including me lol ) have the ability to remain calm and wait. Although I'm glad I bought the Desire when it came out. I just have to restrain myself to wait until the 'next generation' of HTC models
Do you specifically mean the loudspeaker sound quality and/or sound volume loudness?
As to the latter, maybe the end of this page will help somewhat: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3826/motorola-droid-x-thoroughly-reviewed/19

I really love my Desire and I have had no problems with it but I guess there are some faulty models out there too.
If the loudspeaker is important to you, I'd wait for a new model. Desire's loudspeaker is the worst one I've ever seen. If you have no way of testing the device yourself there's an easy way to try it home: just buy the cheapest earplugs you can find, cut off the other earpiece, plug them to any source of audio and maximize the volume. That's what the loudspeaker sounds like, or maybe even worse.
The earpiece is not good either but it does it's job. I often have to ask people to talk more clearly because I can't hear what they are saying due to the poor sound quality.
But for HTC's defense I have to say that the bundled handsfree earplugs are very good and the sound quality of them is impressive. So if you're going to go with Desire, I'd advice you to either use the bundled handsfree or buy a better one yourself.
i disagree that htc does not use the idea of making bad devices so it can sell better ones later
look at the tytn 2 then pro one then pro2.
they make a great phone then instead of improving it they make a bad one , then they improve it again in the exact way it was supposed to naturally evolve.
( and by the way i used all of the three mentioned phones)
but look at the tytn one then the 2 , now that was a better upgrade , and worth the money too.
now as i was saying i am not going to buy the desire, although i love the os and the sence interface, but the speaker quality and the idea that i can't try the phone till i buy it makes it just a risk that i don't want to take , so i will wait and see what the coming days will bring us with new models.
i thank you all for sharing thoughts , opinions and ideas, they were really a lot of help
It's not that the loudspeaker is bad (it isn't), it isn't _very_ loud. It is certainly loud enough to hear the ringtone though.
As for the earpiece quality, I think it is quite good (better than iphone 3G/3GS, a bit worse than Nokia N81). I've heard from people some background hiss/buzzing may occur on 3G when the signal quality is very low. on Edge it works perfectly and quite clearly.
The included earbuds are not the worst I've seen either. They sound fine, look good.
But since I like the earcanal type, I went ahead and got me a pair of Creative EP-630i's, much better noise isolation and bass obviously. I should note that Desire is compatible with earbuds made for iphone just fine (mic and button works as it should).
I'd get a Droid X, if you can get your hands on it. If only for resizable widgets. But extra screen space, noise cancellation², HD recording and a gorgeous 8M camera with panoramic mode make me gush too.
i think that it won't have the great sence interface which is one of the main features that makes me love the htc desire,
but you know , waiting for that rumered desire hd seams to be a good idea after reading all of your opinions

Couldn't agree more, such size screens are just stupid, you are getting in to realms of tab territory then, really who needs a screen of nearly 5 inches on a phone?
Samsung's really do feel cheap, having played with the majority of their releases, they all feel like a lump of plastic, HTC on the other hand feel solid and well built.
And to top it all I hate Samsung's interface, sense IMO is the king of android UI.
I don't think I could bring myself to move away from the look Ive become used to.
If HTC bought out a phone the same size and look as the desire, with the latest android, dual core, more internal memory possibly 32gb or even just a couple but with 2 micro sd slots then I'm sure it would be a best seller again.
HTC if you are reading, please make it happen They could call it Ultimate Desire
Yeah, but with Google it will be vanilla UI

Yeah, it won't be using TouchWiz if it is a Nexus device. And this is the XDA Developers forum - if you don't like the stock rom, change it!
I really prefer the overall look and feel of my Desire, but my wife and son each have SGS2's and I must admit that I'm jealous of the extra screen size and how quickly apps load.
hehe i agree with some of the above
samsung will probably make it feel cheap and iphone-esque - as thats what they do
I like 3.7" - but the sensation might be at a push ok - 4.65" seems massive! I'll never reach my thumb across the screen holding it one handed...
I also like physical buttons - also thought the trackpad on my desire was pointless until t2w/t2u came into my life!
only thing good would be that it is pure android and no touchwiz

It also seemed to lack a home button which was really annoying

Its tricky. The SGS2 is much better spec'd, especially in the screen. But if I get mugged I want a phone that will dent the offenders skull, not shatter to pieces on his face.

depends from how much useless space there is around the screen
it can be 4.65 and be with the same dimension as our desire for example, because it should also not have physical buttons
anyway is not really so big.. 4.65-3.7= 0.95 inches = 2.4 centimeters much bigger, in diagonal, than our desire..but our desire have some useless space around the screen
lets just wait when it comes out to see how it is
Is Sensation exactly the same size as Desire (external size)?
I am asking, because I have a bike mount for Desire that I use everyday when cycling to work, and wonder if Sensation would fit into it too?

This is the One X forum. The only answer you will get here will be 'yes'. You are asking the converted!
(I have still yet to decide between this and the One S).
i have it and i must say it is very different to my old galaxy s2. big, gorgeous and beautiful in white. but there are things i am worried about. one the phone is already locked bootloader two would not have a clue how to root it even if i wanted to and three i need to get it a case
other than that great choice and when i put it on a surface i always make sure i am careful doing it
Yes it's excellent been playing with mine for last couple of hours and can't fault it. Too early to tell in terms of battery life but wow it's good. Even little things like the YouTubeHD videos look awesome far better compared to my galaxy. Notification light is a bliss, screen looks awesome, camera works well. Build quality is nice but will thoroughly test it all when I get some time.
With custom roms and kernels it will only get better.

Yes, we are a bit of a biased bunch here - BUT I will say that I had pretty damn high expectations of this phone, and it actually surpassed them. By some distance.
As far as this or the One S is concerned.. well... 16gb is not enough for me, and the Screen on the One X (Capitalised on purpose).... Oh the screen.....

On another forum there are iphone converts, GN converts, SGSII converts and all are happy with the One X. Of course again there is bias because these are all people who have already bought it
The screen is what threw me as well. I'd initially decided the One S given I was coming from a desire and it wasn't just a huge leap in size. Then I started seeing the reviews about the screens, people had done microscope shots showing the difference.... and i was sold
M.
When is the OTA update due and what's it for???? Hope it fixes the weird flickering. I get in browser and camera sometimes......
do me a favor guys please...look at the power button at the top. on the right side of the power button do you see like a little hole at the bottom of the button..kinda like the plastic power button is out of place? i know it is nothing and will be covered when using a case but i am kinda OCD with things like that and i just want to know it is not me just imagining things
sounds a good choice i must admit it does look sexy in white carnt wait to get mine.

Best android handset so far inmho but not perfect. Had note, nexus, 4s this year and one x beats them all. Few glitches but experienced glitches with all my handsets.

I don't see the hole on mine, at most there is a really small gap next to the button at the front camera side but it doesn't sound like what you're talking about.

I just noticed that the power button is abit loose on my phone. And when I shake the phone I can hear something rattling inside it. Looks like sending it back me thinks.

Since I have not yet been converted, I would have to say, NO, you did not make the right choice. Pass on HTC's silly decision to make a phone that doesn't allow adding an SD card. My 16 month old HTC phone with 4GB of internal + 32GB of external barely stores my modest music collection without much room to spare for other things like lots of apps or picture/video storage. I would think that charging a premium for a quad core CPU and such a gorgeous screen, what moron decided to exclude external storage ability without designing in at least twice the memory they settled on? ... and I really do want to like this phone!! Maybe by the time I am ready to upgrade, HTC will realize their mistake and release a version with external storage ability. I mean, you already have to get into it to install a SIM right?

32 gb in phone + 25 gb in cloud server is a lot of space imho.

I think youll find most handsets are going down this root now with space constraints due to large processers, better cams etc and they will just tell you why do you need to store stuff on phone when it can be stored in cloud for easy access aswell
This is a mega rant. I have had the phone for about 2 months now, and always thought the issue was only with my device and i should give it to the service center, which was always delayed because of something or the other.
Now recently i suggested the One X to another friend of mine, and he did the same to another friend of his.
On all our phones the microphone quality is just pathetic, the person on the other side of the call is always complaining of the call being muddy or muffled, so to speak and i sound pretty much illegible most of the time.
Though a little bit exaggerated maybe, but im super pissed!
This is what i mailed them :
The microphone quality on my HTC One X is seriously disappointing. I cannot remember one call in which the person on the other end has not complained about my Voice being "muffled" or "muddy" and completely illegible. In fact i am not the only person facing this issue; this has been mentioned in a lot of reviews as well. But i never could have imagined that this issue will be so pronounced!!
I am using a Vodafone connection in India. Exact location is NOIDA, UP (NCR region).
I tested a friends phone as well, and the exact same problem!!! His phone is barely a week old! (He is on Airtel btw.)
Not only am i regretting getting the One X over the Galaxy S3, but i have to bear the constant nag from my friend to whom i had recommended this phone over the Galaxy S3 (AGAIN!).
I have owned the Nexus One, the HTC Desire Z, the HTC Sensation, the HTC G1 and the HTC Hero!! I have always loved the amazing build quality! But one thing that was flawed in all of these devices was the earpiece volume. Though that could be managed with.
HELL! My 3 year old Nexus One sounds crispier!!
And no I have not reached any conclusions by just calling one no. or phone.
I tested the call quality by calling the One X (and calling from the One X) the following devices:
Motorola Atrix / Motorola DEFY / Samsung Galaxy S / Samsung Note / Samsung Galaxy S3 / Nokia Lumia 800 / HTC Nexus One / Samsung Galaxy Nexus / Samsung Nexus S.
It has been 2 months since I purchased the device.
With the One X the ear piece quality was fixed, but the microphone quality just went down the drain!
I cannot even use the phone as a PHONE! ?
I think I just wasted Rs. 36000 ($650) on a top of the line “HTC” device, which is soon going to be “replaced” but the rumored “HTC One X+/CL” ???
Is this how dependable HTC has become? It has been barely 6 months since the HTC One X was released and a new top of the line device already in the works? Is this how the premium customers are treated?
I know that all I will get out of this “rant” is a typical –“We are sorry that you are disappointed with the device and request you to get you device checked at the nearest HTC service center mail”, but I really had to get this through, because I really feel that my trust in HTC as a competent manufacturer of quality mobile devices has been broken and is un repairable.
Im ordering the Galaxy S3 as soon as I reach the US next month to start my PG studies there, at least I will get good support for the money I spend. And most of all will be able to use the phone as phone.
From here on I will not recommended the HTC One X to anyone or as I should put it as- any HTC device from now on.
I am sorry, but I am just throwing away the phone into some drawer and will be using a cheap Nokia phone, which again has far better call quality, than my $650 HTC ONE X! , till the time I get my Galaxy S3.

Chime in with your views.
AND NO I AM NOT USING A CASE WITH THE PHONE! The bloody camera lens is already accumulating scratches.
Are the scratches magically apppearing or are you pocketing the phone with keys and sand?
Sand or fine dirt will foul up the Mic and scratch even gorilla glass.

My LCD is fine, there is a screen gguard applied on it. the scratches on the camera lens though are because of it protruding outwards of the back body. so whenever iI place it on a hard oor alight dusty surface.. the lens makes contact and gets scratched.
This really isn't of any concern to me. I will as it is getting a replacement BLACK back panel.
Also the Mic ports are perfectly lint or dust free.
I totally disagree, I've just recorded my self talking and it was crisp clear, could be a network or radio problem, I do remember reading that one of the radios was rubbish in a certain stock rom, try recording your self?

Trap that was thethe first thing iI tried myself.
The Mic recording quality is top notch to say the least... but this is when recording in PCM. Which almost impossible to use for transmitting over a network call.
Try calling youself from another phone... mute it (the other phone) and then try speaking to yourself. Compare this with the recording.
Over the past iI tried swapping the radio as well.. even tried different RIL combinations. Still no change.

Yeap that is why the friends One X on a different network.
This is not a new thing... it is just too pronounced in my case.
I just Google's - Htc one x voice muffled.
And found that even a lot of reviews state that the call audio is muffled.
I really hope in all of this ,that I am wrong and it is just a netwrok issue.
A friend of mine has the same problem with his One X.
It's definitely a hardware issue.
Just left my self a voicmail and it was as clear as the recording, maybe hardware variances who knows

Btw you had to mention SIII in your first post isn't?

Ok my voice is pretty bassy, but no-one has complained about my voice being muffled at the other end since May.
I just recorded myself and it sounds pretty fine.
I can understand why you're pissed, despite all the shortcomings of any smartphone its basic feature i.e the phone should be fully functional.
But if you're saying you AND two other friends also feel the voice is muffled that's messed up ****.

Why did did I mention the S3 in my post you ask ?
If not the ONE X then WHAT ELSE?
Your signature answers the question.
And you might want to check my post history.. that'll probably give you more proof over the "troll" crap.
Also I prefer Sense over anything. That is why I'm running ViperX and not CM10.

There must be something with the Indian networks here which is messing things up badly...
Only choice is to wait till i get to the US and try the phone there.

Ok sorry, probably I'm wrong but I'm getting nuts people keep mentioning SIII in there first post.
If you have a mic problem go claim your warrantee, what's keeping you?
My mic works fine, calling does work fine, could it be a operator issue you and your friends are facing?
Also my camera glass or screen doesn't have any scratch, I feel like I'm the only one in the world LoL.

Love the screen Nothing comes close! PERIOD.
Thing is that they are on a different netwrok and i am on a differemt one.
As far claiming the warranty... well I'm leaving for the US in 10 days. and I'm prettyyyu sure that they are going to take atleast 15 to even get a repair done. I don't want to get the ATT one X ., no matter what! Can't afford to get a new one due to obvious overheads of moving to a different country...
Ah chuck it. Ill go bloody order a Jabra Street 2. While I wait for HTC to revert back.

If it helps, I've used the phone in the UAE and India(!dea and Vodafone) I'm on Idea right now.
Can you try to describe the muffling a little better? Does your voice get muffled real bad i.e people can't understand jack-**** or what?
And yea warranty will take long, you won't be able to claim warranty in the U.S either. I can't claim my UAE warranty in India unless I pay $30 for shipping to an International HTC Service Center.
