UK Vodafone original SPL version? URGENT! PLS HELP! - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I have to return my UK Vodafone TP2 to HTC but need to know which SPL to put back on. Anyone know which version was originally shipped? 0.79, 0.84 or 0.87?
It’s going back on Fri so I’m really desperate to get this sorted.
Please help!

I got one of the first Vodafone UK TP2's and one of the first things I did was dump the whole ROM including SPL using the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=501871
I have the dump here if it will help but it's not like you can just click install, I haven't done anything beyond dumping it.
Maybe an idea if no-one knows the answer off the top of their heads is to get raw dumps of the different SPL versions and see which file matches this one I have here.
Might be on the PC again later if so I will open what I have in a hex editor and see if a version number pops out at me.
If you want the raw dump it's 512k uncompressed so no problem, or if you want md5 hash etc let me know.

Had a look in hex editor, the one I dumped from mine is 0.79.
Whether they all shipped like that I can't say, but mine did.

Mine was 0.79. However, none of the manufacturers have ever mentioned that the Stock SPL was the wrong version - they only complain about Hard SPL's - well no-ones reported them doing that so far.
Ta,
Dave

Cheers all.
Thats a big help.
Hope I'm not without it for too long. Back to my old Nokia 6100 backup for a week or so

ROM upgrade error 296 (upgrade only)

Hello
I've searched on this forum and can't find the answer to my specific question.
I upgraded a while back to MrClean AKU 2.3 and now I need to downgrade because the unit needs to be sent back under warranty due to screen alignment issues.
So I unpacked the i-mate WWE ROM, and replaced the ROMUpdateUtility from that with the ROMUpdateUtility_Wizard_NoID.exe, which I downloaded from the XDA FTP site. (This is because using the standard one supplied gives a ROM upgrade error 296: UPGRADE ONLY error.)
As far as I can make out, the ROMUpdateUtility_Wizard_NoID.exe is just patched to not validate the current version when upgrading.
"Brilliant, this should work", I think.
But I get the following error:
"ERROR [238]: FILE READ... the update utility cannot open the requested file. Please check your update utility"
(see here http://static.flickr.com/111/306871020_8aa37f337e_o.gif)
Please help, anyone, I am coming up to the end of my warranty period and reeeeally want to get this crappy broken screen alignment problem sorted!
Thanks in advance
* bump *
Hope it's not considered rude to bump here, just would love to solve this problem as tis driving me a bit mad
Many thanks in advance

Hey
Thanks for the tip. You were right, it must have been a corrupt .nbf file.
I tried to downgrade and the progress bar started and finished and all seemed to go well.
But when I boot up again I get the white MrClean ROM splash screen still!
Is it possible the update was done but the splash screen was not replaced?
Or perhaps the update wasn't actually done? Which version number do I look for? I used the .nbf file packaged in with the imate ROM K-JAM_WWE_1010903_106_10110_ship.exe
Please help!
try using this rom to downgrade with... after that you should be able to upgrade to any official rom. Make sure that you pick an official one as the above rom downgrades the ipl/spl as well.
ohh... and make sure that you restore the CID lock as well, they might be get rather cranky otherwise...
Good luck
Hello
Thank you so much for the reply, I really appreciate the advice. I would feel so out-there-on-my-own without it! I bought the imate off contract from expansys and it was really expensive and so really don't want it to end up a brick as I can't afford another right now!
I successfully downgraded to that QTEK custom ROM.
But now when I upgrade again to K-JAM_WWE_216901_2169101_020710_ship (latest).exe from that QTEK ROM, it doesn't work! Upgrade error again [ERROR 296]
Here are the screens I get:

Thanks again
Mat
Just to clarify... is the phone CID-locked? You might also want to try flashing it with the K-JAM_WWE_1010903_106_10110_ship.exe ROM before upgrading it... you can also try putting the phone in bootloader mode, press and keep pressed both the keys on the right side and then insert the pen in the resetbutton, before trying the upgrade...
EDIT: msmobiles.com shows the following regarding the particular error:
ERROR [296] : UPGRADE ONLY
One of these error messages will appear when you use the wrong RUU to do the upgrade. RUU will check if the Model ID and Language ID are compatible with the device. Make sure you use the appropriate RUU tool to upgrade.

Hey Nomad
Thanks again for the advice. This is all really really helpful. Going to try what you suggested a bit later.
I think I CID unlocked the phone - to be honest it was a while ago and I just remember blindly following someone's instructions (I was at a point of desperation at the time for another reason!)
Either way, I am pretty sure it would have to have been CID unlocked because I flashed the ROM from the imate default one to the MrClean one.
I did some initial looking around about CID relocking the device but still not sure how. Does the lockiwiz give the option of locking the CID as well as unlocking it?
Thanks!
Mat
I flashed from the QTEK custom ROM to the K-JAM_WWE_1010903_106_10110_ship.exe after doing that special reset whilst in the bootloader. This flash upgrade worked but again it didn't remove the splash screen from the QTEK custom ROM.
But now whenever I try to flash to the latest imate ROM K-JAM_WWE_216901_2169101_020710_ship.exe using the default RUU I get ERROR [296] UPGRADE ONLY.
And when I try to flash to the same ROM using the noID RUU I get ERROR [238]: FILE READ ERROR.
(On that last one, I have re-downloaded both the noID RUU and the extractable archive K-JAM_WWE_216901_2169101_020710_ship.exe from the XDA FTP.
So, I'm still unable to get my ROM to the imate version! Many thanks for your help!

how to downgrade ipl/spl for warranty reasons (currently running HardSPL)?

Hi,
I have the following question. I currently have installed HardSPLv7 (so the device shows IPL-1.04 / SPL-2.20Olipro.
How exactly do I downgrade to my old IPL-1.00 / SPL-1.06 in case I have to hand-in my device for warranty reasons? I already searched through the forum and read that it can be done using sspl somehow but I couldn't find exact instructions.
Can anybody (maybe pof) give detailed instructions on how to downgrade to original ipl/spl from a .nbh with the correct ipl/spl files. I already prepared a .nbh with a spl-1.06 and the corresponding IPL extracted from an original vendor rom and put in my rebuilt dumped rom.
I also have the problem that I don't know where to get IPL-1.00, because on the page where to original roms are listed only the SPL version is noted, but not which ipl is in which rom. Can anybody tell me where I can get an IPL-1.00 .nb file?
Thanks for any help on this. I also think that maybe it could be interesting to put this onto the wiki if I anybody can answer this.
Thanks for any help.
check you PM
It's already pretty much in the Wiki, maybe a 'downgrade' link would be prudent.

IPL-1.00 / SPL-1.06? Is this working
Hi,
I just read through the mr vanx downgrade guide and found out that there is a downgrade package with IPL-1.00 and IPL-1.04 and a second one with IPL-1.01 and IPL-1.06.
Now, I have the problem that my device was shipped with IPL-1.00 and SPL-1.06? Apparently this is a strange combination as this is not downloadable at the mr vanx downgrade guide, so my question is. Can I simply extract the IPL-1.00 from one .nbh and SPL-1.06 from the other and recombine them using rombaker, or would a downgrade to this combination screw up my device?
Thanks for letting me know.
I'm on the same boat, I need to downgrade my JasJam to send it in.
I haven't researched at all yet, i've been pretty busy. when I get off work i'll look into it and see if I run into the problem your facing and we can atempt to solve it together.

Easiest thing to do is to download your original shipped ROM and extract the NBH file (using dutty's good nbh tool) and grab the IPL or SPL that you need and substitute that for the file from MrVanx. Just be careful what you flash - if you mix up the IPL and SPL file - InstaBrick! Trust me - I know
Do as ToddJG says, download the two files which i refer to in the guide.
Extract the IPLs and SPLs from the two files, mix and match.....BUT BE CAREFULL.......DONT FLASH UNLESS YOUR PREPARED TO DO IT.
ipl 1.00 and spl 1.06 will be fine.
make a single nbh from the mix and match combination then flash with customRUU.
What if i'm trying to flash the original shipped rom.. and i do the first step in your guide, then simply flash the shipped rom, or do i still have to extract the ipl and spl? (they're already extracted just wanting to know if its redundant if i recompile it with the rom i extracted them from.)
Ok, just succesfully downgraded to IPL-1.00 and SPL-1.06. Now i'm gonna flash back to an imate shipped WM5 rom. but one problem with that... clubimate.com is only showing the extroms which are around 6mb when downloaded.. where can i get the full imate rom?
also mrvanx what do u mean by this:
As with other downgrade guides this is NOT intended as a guide for claiming the warranty of the device having flashed components which are not authorised by the manufacturer or carrier.

It means that if you flashed unauthroized phone parts (like unofficial WM6 roms, radio upgrades and so on you have void your warranty). Of course if you can downgrade to your old rom nobody will notice that you did that.
But you have to be very careful on downgrading if you have also upgraded your radio I thinkk, cause you can brick your device (means having "NOGSM" after downgrading), see this note from mr. vanx downgrade guide for wm5:
NOTE: If your radio version is currently HIGHER than 1.27.00.00 then it is very likely the radio bootloader is version 0108, this WILL NOT allow the radio to be downgraded to a radio containing BL 0106 and will result in a "NO GSM" error.

Maybe you should follow mr. vanx downgrade guide for wm5 to make sure your on the safe side.
I thought he meant that it is still noticeable if you downgrade the IPL and SPL that it would be detected during warranty repairs but thats not the case...
I emailed I-Mate and they gave me an RMA# and had me purchase the $60.00 Diagnostic package from PocketPcTechs.com(They handle imate warranties in the US). So i did that, they emailed me with a form i should fill out and include it with my device when i ship it...
Did that, they sent me an email when they recieved my device, 15min after that i recieved another email that they were working on my devic, then Early the next day i get an email saying repairs are complete and its being ready to get shipped back to me... 15min an email with a tracking number saying its shipped....
Everything worked so smoothly, warranty was accepted, hopefully everything will be good when i get the device back (which should be today) I want to get rid of this ****ty iphone so bad!

why is every one so paranoid about this....
has anyone EVER heard of a warranty being denied because of the software on it?

Go to the wiki > hermes > original shipped wm5 roms and then decompile the rom with duttys good nbh tool. You will see an spl.nb file. Make that alone into an nbh file using duttys good nbh tool. Then flash to your hermes using the custom ruu.
Since you have successfully followed mrv's guide, you should probably know what all those things are.

Man thank you so much for the fast reply! Having downgraded to 1.10.olipro and downloading the original rom exe, when I ran it (accidentally) it flashed the 1.11 SPL back to the phone for me. I didn't even have to use duttys tool. THANKS AGAIN!

Hey, maybe i come to late,
I had the same "problem", I had the Screen Aligment Issue. And I really wonderd myself if o2 have problem with my "Schaps ROM Version HardSPL" BUT there was no problem, they solved my Screen Aligment Issue. Afterwards I asked, what actually is bad for warrenty. Upgrading the Bootloader is no problem. But CID (Costumer ID) unlocking will may be evil. Anyway's for myself (the SA-Issue) was a hardware issue which has nothing todo with software facts like upgrading the bootloader...
dont be worried... i guess there will be no prob...

Restoring Jasjam/tytn/hermes Back To Original

Dear All,
I know that we can upgrade by breaking the CID to WM6 but I was just wondering how to roll back to exactly what the device was before these modifications. I mean to roll back EVERYTHING back to original. Please let me know when we tamper with CID or whatever in the process of making the JASJAM upgradable to WM6. I won't lile to upgrade if I don't know how to go back. Also someone please explain to people like me what all these terms like SPL / CID etc stand for, What is the typical role of CID, Bootloader, etc. What is Nbo and Nbf files. I wan to learn the basics.

Alber

How to EXACTLY undo a wm6 upgrade?

Hi Everybody
My hermes is the following:
Vodafone 1605 ITA WM5
ROM: 2.07.165.1 (02/13/07)
Radio: 1.32.00.00
I don't know If I'm going to tryu the wm6 update, but, before even thinking about it, I want to make sure that I can restore it back to what it was in the beginning, in case anything goes wrong...
How can I save my Rom, radio and everything OR where can I find my exact rom and all the necessary stuff to revert it back?
I noticed a guide for wm5 downgrade, but that wolud probably only bring back wm5 in some form, and not MY wm5 and everything that comes with it...
I hope you understood what I mean
Is that even possible?
Thanks in advance
Happily, it's easy mate.
Download your original rom from the archive so you've got it to reinstall from. (Check your current versions of rom, radio, etc. to make sure it's the right one.)
When you want to downgrade, just plug in your phone and run the downloaded exe. It'll take LOADS longer for the 'old' rom to install than your upgrade to wm6 did. This is mainly because the 'old' (original) rom you download will install spl, ext rom, os, plash 1 + 2 and radio all at once.
Thats the easy way.
You could extract just the bits of the original you need to save time, but there are instructions in threads, wiki and downloads for that so I won't repeat it all here. It's Dutty's Good NBH Tool you'll be using (start your search with that if you want to go down that road).
Thanks for the quick reply
By "archive" do you mean this?
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades
So I guess my rom should be this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298541
It also matches my ROM and Radio version.
There's just one thing I don't understand... I looked at the WM6 guides on mrvanx.org, which show many many steps. Are you saying that I could just grab the latest original HTC exe update and launch it and it would update everything? And still only launch another exe to revert to the old stuff?
Then why do people take the risk and flash all the components separately? Just to use homemade roms?
Thanks
No, it's about the CID (area and carrier-specific idintifier) of your phone.
Your phone'll accept your old rom back because it's from the right country and carrier.
'Cooked' roms aren't the 'right' one for your phone and so you have to alter the phone so it won't care which rom you use. That's what all the messing about before installing wm6 is basically all about - to convince your phone that any CID is fine.
Similarly, I use OrangeUK as my provider and the phone 'wants' a hermes rom from them. Thusly you can't just download and use the latest HTC rom as it's not got the CID code your phone wants. Once you've used the OliPro software you'll be able to use all the roms you like.
The 'archive' is exactly what yopu found there, aye. With downloads coming in zips and rars I shouldn't have called that page the archive, soz.
As to the right rom, I wouldn't like to say, but if it's right country, carrier, radio and rom then you're laughing, download it and tuck it away safe.
Mine for example is the OrangeUK (ORANG001) one. The one with the AKU in bold. So that's been on my laptop since day one of having my hermes.

Ok that wes pretty clear
Let me just see if I got it right.
To go WM6:
- Upgrade CID to an unlocked version
- Either
1. Use HTC official exe upgrade, which updates ROM, ExtROM and Radio
or
2. Update Radio first and then ROM+ExtROM with a custom version
To revert to Vodafone WM5:
It's not assured that my radio can be safely downgraded (http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=41&Itemid=27), so:
- Use Dutty's tool to extract my Vodafone ROM+ExtROM (no Radio) from the exe
- Downgrade SPL (not mandatory)
- Flash Vodafone ROM+ExtROM
Kinda?...
Yep, kinda!
But if you're planning to upgrade to WM6 with the correct VODAFONE release for your device you do not need to CID unlock your device and all that crap!
Sorry, I am not trying to confuse you!
Here an example:
Lets say you have an HTC Hermes from Vodafone UK with WM5 on there!
If Vodafone UK provides you an WM6 upgrade on their site (or if you find it in the 'archive' here in the Wiki then you do not have to CID unlock but you can run the upgrade without doing anything more than downloading the ROM and running it.
After you upgraded with the Vodafone UK WM6 you can 'downgrade' again with the Vodafone UK WM5 without any problems - even here a CID unlock is not necessary! Both ROMs contain the same CID code because of they are from the same provider.
A CID unlock is only necessary if you are planning to flash your device with ROMs which are not from your network provider, as example you want to flash a Hermes ROM from O2 UK to your Vodafone UK device. O2 UK is a different network provider and has a different CID code. Therefore your phone would refuse the upgrade and give you an error message WRONG VENDER ID!
CID unlock will trick your phone and it just does not care anymore about the VENDER ID (CID code) submitted by the ROM you're trying to flash!
The best way for you to play around with that stuff for a while might be to use SOFT_SSPL.exe to temporarely 'CID unlock' your phone. If you think that you really need it permanently CID unlocked because of you're going to flash it a lot then download the Hermes_Unlocker_3a which will do the job for you!
Please keep in mind that you will lose all data in your device when flashing!
Thanks again, and no, you are not confusing me
In fact, the only reason why I skipped that solution is because there's no official WM6 upgrade from Vodafone IT
Actually I like that SOFT_SSPL.exe thingy... Does it mean that my CID is unlocked just for the time of flashing or what?
And... it seems that you talk about CID and SPL like if they were the same thing... what's the difference?
Thx
Yes.
You will have to copy the soft.sspl.exe to your pda and run it from there. Just have your stuff ready for flashing before doing so.
The soft_sspl.exe is not writing anything to your ppc permanently. After flashing it is gone.
Please read the UPGRADING FOR BEGINNERS section in the Wiki carefully, even about bootloaders and all that crap before starting to flash!
TAKEN FROM THE HERMES WIKTIONARY in the Wiki section:
CID
The CID (Carrier ID) of the device is a setting which determines which carrier ROMs should be allowed to run on the device, a table of valid CIDs can be found in the wiki pages. All bootloaders (apart from HardSPL and SSPL) will only allow a ROM with the correct CID to be flashed onto the device. A device which has been CID unlocked will have 'SuperCID' which allows ANY ROM to be loaded onto the device, SuperCID also unlocks the Ext_ROM and allows it to be mounted.
SPL
See Bootloader.
SSPL
SSPL is a modified bootloader (by Des) which is loaded into RAM when run, this allows us to overwrite any aspect of the ROM, Radio or Bootloader far easier than using mtty. See the official thread for more info.
Do be aware that almost everyone ignores SSPL and upgrades their bootloader and SuperCIDs their phone with the OliPro software.
Although I always use SSPL myself, that's only because I keep a 'safety-net' copy of my own provider's most recent official ROM on my storage card. That way if I naff up the upgrade to wm6 and 'brick' my phone, I can easily restore it to out of the box condition without a PC.
(If you were thinking about using SSPL to avoid altering your bootloader - and remember you'd be going against the grain on this one - can I at least recommend you go here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_SDCardFlashing and set yourself up a HERMIMG.nbh on your microsd card before considering it? You don't want to go from all excited to gutted and no hermes.)

Thanks for this really helpful advice!
I'll try to do some research on this option before doing anything, just to make sure that I know all the options before taking a definite road...
I still need to figure out what are the disadvantages of going HardSPL instead of using SSPL every time and if it's worth to update the radio firmware to the latest version, instead of just keeping my own.
If all radio functions seem good and reliable you could leave the radio upgrade.
On a 'new radio version' thread try to find any references from a user from your own country, region within that country and provider as regards any radio versions. each new one is simply the most recent that a provider somewhere has brought out. the latest version number by no means that any given phone on X provider in X region of X country will be improved. It could easily be worsened.
Another way to do it, and very long-winded, is to flash the latest radio and, if dissatisfied, go backward thorugh the versions till you get it performing satisfactorily.
If you're happy wwith your radio performance don't change it tbh. Just my opinion on that, some people may differ.

HardSPL will be permanently written (hard-coded) to your phone! This can be a problem if you have to mail in your phone for service! You would lose your warranty!
SSPL is just temporary for the moment. It executes from the RAM until the flash job is finished. Afterwards it is gone!
BTW: I made some experiments on my 8525:
It was not very difficult to 'undo' HardSPL! I simply took my original shipped ROM image file (nbh) and flashed it entirely with CustomRUU - afterwards HardSPL was gone.
If I ever get a new device I will use SSPL only. All you have to do, is, to copy it to your SD card and run it when you want to flash your device. That makes it only 1 more step compared to having your phone HardSPLed ...
Mmm, considering both your answers, I might go for SSPL, at least for the first time.
I thought that the official HTC update contained also a new radio version, so there should be no difference between carriers... that's a point that confuses me a bit.
I mean, are there HTC radios as opposed to Vodafone radios and so on?

back to default

i had to warranty my at&t 8525 and i would like to know if anyone can point me in the direction of the official bootloader and rom and any other necessary stuff i know i could search but my search for the bootloader (spl) returned nothing help will be greatly appreciated and i only have like 2 days to mail this back or theyll charge me
Look in 2 places; the wiki, and especially mrvanx guides (www.mrvanx.org)
Good luck.

i had to take my hermes in for repairs (screen wouldn't work) and they said that i had a faulty screen due to flashing illegal roms. and that i shouldn't restore to my original spl etc because it will mess up the phones motherboard. i had to pay in $320, just for a new screen. and they put back the original HTC wm6 rom.
i think this will help
