Swype keyboard for HTC HERO ? - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Hy everybody.
I've seen in this NexusOne thread (Swype Beta Keyboard with fix for resolution pop-up) that Swype was available for WVGA devices ; thus not for our HERO (HVGA screen). I succeeded in installing it, but the keyboard does not show up
I've seen in another forum (Swype for HVGA Devices - *updated*) that a version for HVGA Devices was available. Unfortunately (at least for non english nor spanish people), this app does include ONLY english and spanish languages, while the first one above includes other languages, especially french (which I'm looking for ...)
Thus my question is : Would it be possible for a developper over there to build a Swype app for HVGA devices including additionnal languages ?
Thank you for your help.

wow, i just tried the english version and this keyboard is really awesome.
thx for pointing it out. ;-)
i unfortunately have no clue how to get new languages for this keyboard but i reaaly would love a german one...

try shapewriter keyboard

this keyboard is greaaat

Yay, now there is swype AND shapewriter.
Shapewriter kind of beat them to it I guess.
However, the HTC keyboard or the stock android 2.0+ keyboard kind of has an edge over these new ones for me: As you have your finger on the screen while writing, it kind of obscures the keypad.
It makes it hard to hit the keys, while regular typing does not have this problem: you lift your fingers in between (and the letter pops up, so you don't overshoot)
Too bad these both don't just use the default localization dictionaries.

Could anyone provide me with a non-torrent mirror?
I'd like to include this in my roms.
Thank you

just installed this and used it to send a text and wow, what a great idea!. Nathan if you can build this into your roms it would be amazing.
EDIT: Nathan I could email you the .apk if you pm me an email address.

what am I getting ? swype or shapewriter ?

Done my research and Swype seems the better option

ok thanks

i had the idea of searching for the language packs in the wvga version that are missing in the hvga build and i think i found them.
i have to say that i have no clue about building/(signing?) apks so i just renamed the wvga swype apk to zip and unzipped it. there were several additional language files in \assets\files for french, german, italian, russian.
but when i add them to the hvga build (see first posting in this thread), zip it, rename it to apk and try to install it on my phone the installation is aborted.
i'm sure i'm doing something completely wrong here but perhaps somebody can help who also would like to use other languages?

My installation of the normal .apk took a few attempts anyway so try again.
Other than that someone on here might be able to help

thx for your reply, i tried several times now but it's always saying that the application could not be installed on this phone. is this a signing problem?

ok guys, i just searched the forum a bit and found the autosigner thread. now i signed the apk with the batch signing tool and everything worked fine. the apk could be installed and german dictionary is working at the moment (first test). will test french too now...
okay french doesn't work at the moment because it seems that an other keyboard layout is used for this and this is missing in my apk file. i try to fix this now... but can't promise anything.

There you go
RS Mirror : http://rapidshare.com/files/349177967/signed-swypebeta.apk.zip

I can't get it to show up as the keyboard, I've enabled swype in the locale settings, what else do I need to do?
EDIT: Ignore, I just can't read.

FYI, found this posted by a staff member on MoDaCo...
"We have removed the Swype application from posts for the time being as we ate currently talking to the Swype team regarding copyright infringment.
This includes links to download sites etc. Any posts linking to or requesting Swype will be removed without warning.

Well personally I think we should thank Swype for a fantastic app, but really it is their fault for not releasing it on the hero.

i installed this last night from a link i found online somewhere, I really like it. Didnt think i would thought it would be weird but actually seems good. Getting used to it. The tutorial is really worth doing if your new to it.

Alternative keyboard for Artemis

I just thought i'd share this little nice app for our Artemis......it beats the small microscopic keyboard that WM5 comes with......i got this from an eten x500 device and its also available for download from the eten-users forum website.......this is what it looks like:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
can you share the name of this app?
I'd like to know too!
E-ten calls it Easy Keyboard......i tried looking for it everywhere but apparently its only available for eten devices......there are other similar software out there but the design is not as good as this one......
thanks for the fast follow up... looks like SPB Keyboard is my best option at the moment.
no worries, and yeah i use to have the spb full screen keyboard aswell in portrait or landscape mode but i don't like the fact that you have to assign the program to a hardware key to launch it.....i prefer something to come up automatically like the standard keyboard, if you know what i mean.

I am member of the eten-users forum, but I can't find from where it could be downloaded. Can you help?
cheers
I've downloaded it from the eten-users ftp server, X500 directory.
The problem with this software is that it is not running properly in the Artemis. It opens and seems to run properly, then, after some time of usage, it pop back. Then, you cannot keep the keyboard up while typing, it pops back constantly.
It's a pity since this keyboard is most useful. If somebody can provide the solution, I'll appreciate.

that's weird......i never had a problem with this program on my artemis (dopod P800W).....after installation, i waited a couple of minutes until the device turns off automatically and then soft reset.....then set the keyboard to "easy keyboard" as default input....never had a problem after that.....it never popped back.....the only annoying thing is every time you soft reset the artemis, the default input becomes the normal small WM5 standard keyboard, you just have to remember to keep setting the default input again to "easy keyboard" after every soft resets.....thats it.

Anyone found the link as of yet? Also, is it English only or there is one to switch between two languages - i need \english and Russian.

Yeh i tried that one but i found that there was too much dead space inbetween the keys and that i was missing letters easily.
You can just go to the site and then sign up, the software is then in the download section under x500 - pre installed aps - screenkb_eng and it's 815kb. Doesn't look like it's in any other language other than English though.
can someone please upload the e-ten easy keyboard software?
I have tried to find it but cannot
I found it (easy keyboard)and installed it. very nice......
does some know if there is a QWERTY layout available for the keyboard?

For those that are having problems with the eten easy keyboard not sticking or popping back, install the program "IM selector" or STEP 2 of the installation steps found on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296455
its called IM_WM5.CAB and set the default input method to easy keyboard
Thank you very much for your suggestion but, from where can I download the IM_WM5.CAB file?
its from the above thread i mentioned......well its actually part of or within this download link:

download and unrar and install IM_WM5.cab

You can open the YotaContact.zip file that the cab creates and inside there is a Language Folder. You can modify the Russian one or create a new one for your own language.
Thick Question :
How is this different from PCM Contacts ?
It looks incredibly similiar.
What's the selling point ? More features ? Or is it speed / smaller footprint ?
I'm not questioning it's value...Some of you already sound like you are enjoying it. Just want to know what it does!

I've just installed the app on my touch HD and it looks better than PCM Contacts for me... the interface is very well designed, all functions are easily accessible: eg. search contact, edit details, add contact, etc... because there are more buttons... and i love also the little details for the contact and the switch from professionnal details to personnal details with the touch switch...
just 2 drawbacks:
- qwerty keyboard (azerty is missing, or it would be nice to have the option for the defaut SIP)
- some russian words (I,ve just seen the word for filter by "company" which is in russian)... and french translation would be very nice
Also, is this (and other Yota applications) Freeware ?

the only way I have sorted contacts by first name is to put the WHOLE name in one field as opposed to first name field and last name field.

Swype v3.26 Beta not yet compatible

As of November 26th, 2011, the latest Swype beta Swype v3.26.92.36178 (http://www.multiupload.com/IALPY1J32T) does not yet work.
It erroneously reports the screen size as 720x1,184:

I wonder if 720x1184 is the size of the screen apart from the space reserved for the soft buttons. I hope to see Swype soon, touch pal isn't really the same and it is mis-sized as well on gn

Same here, I also got the error message already before installing it.
I hope they will make a compatible version soon, but I find that since the screen is so big, thumb-typing like on a BlackBerry device works surprisngly well with the Nexus.
This link is already on the other Galaxy Nexus/Swype thread on XDA, but posting here for completeness: http://forum.swype.com/showthread.php?4798-Ice-Cream-Sandwich-and-or-720p-ETA
In short, the issue is that the Swype installer checks the resolution, and because of the soft keys, the reported resolution actually has 96 px chopped off the end to accommodate the soft keys.

ICS+Swype
Was reading the ICS/GNex thread on Swype, and just to confirm. Swype has no issues with ICS per say, it is the screen size that is screwy for some reason. Additionally, i have found that improperly acquiring the app can cause issues (for example getting it from somebody else etc). I am enrolled in the beta programme, have been since pre-nexus days, so i just requested a downloaded the installer via the email.
Not sure why it's not compatible since the first few post on that thread says "swype officially supports 720p resolutions". It even works with the new ICS Style "add words" thing, as opposed to the old way to add words to the swype dictionary with the pop up, it seems to use the ICS Custom dictionary.
In all honesty I'm using Slideit for now and its a great replacement. It even has an ICS theme and is $0.10 today
Me too -- I was heartbroken at losing Swype, but have adjusted to SlideIt and am now happy with it. There are some SlideIt touches I'm even finding preferable.

Unfortunately for a noob, I can't post the link to the post. Just search "swype for galaxy nexus" on Google Plus.
I have Swype back now! Enjoy!

I have tried getting into swype, swift key and better keyboard but no decent compact qwerty option for these.
I have been using the htc_ime mod since discovering the original stock version it on my old HTC hero years ago.
I love this keyboard mainly because its the only compact qwerty keyboard for android that's actually any good.
I encourage the brains behind this mod to continue to fix issues and support for new versions of android in the future. Seems like i'm not the only loyal follower of this mod.
Thanks for fixing it
A very happy customer
Will this work on 4.0.4 with ff18 agat recovery? The zip will not install.

Unfortunately ICS broke the HTC_IME keyboard and since many of us love both the full QWERTY and T9 functions, I have gone and "fixed" some of the existing themed versions that are currently out there.
I am not trying to take credit for the work others have done so I will link to the respective threads and mention names where appropriate.
For starters, the credit for the Modded HTC_IME goes to jonasl who initially created the keyboard and released the source code for us all to use. His thread is found here.

I have deviated a little from the original theme and removed the ICS image from the space bar, and also changed the XT9/ABC switcher (visible when in Phone Pad mode) which was the same as the Grey one.

Grey Themed
I downloaded this one when I first started using Android just over 2 years ago and I can't seem to find the source of it now, so for the time being lets give the credit to Professor X.

The only thing I have changed in this one is the themed XT9/ABC button which used to be the same as the Grey one.

Works perfect for me on Stock ROM FW 431.
Thanks for the response XperienceD, I have looked over those and I was able to get the HTC IME MOD keyboard working. I just don't understand what the deal is with prediction. It suggests words above the keyboard is that not prediction? And if the highlighted one is what you want pressing space enters that word.
