unbranded TP2 "not working" on Telstra - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I have a TP2 which I got outright and currently has 3 sim. Today I tried my friends Telstra NextG sim and I can't get any service. Tried manual search and also tried changing Band from Automatic to GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850).
Nothing. Also, manual search finds Optus network but not Telsrta.
This is a bit of a bummer cause I was going to switch to Telstra NextG in few weeks.
Would a ROM upgrade fix this? plz help.
Touch Pro 2 (WM 6.5 HTC Rom)
ROM: 1.86.710.3 (67102)
Radio: 4.49.25.17
btw. My friend has a Telstra branded Touch Diamond2

thats quite interesting! telstra are yet to release their 6.5 update, but perhaps getting a copy from your telstra friend when its released will fix this?

My understanding is thtat the unbranded TP2 is a 900/2100 phone. the settings may allow 850/1900 but it will not work. My understanidn is that the nextG version sold by telstra has a different internal antenna setup

The unbranded TP2 is quadband GSM but does not support Telstra 3G. Does Telstra not operate a 2G network? If not then it will not work on Telstra. You need either a Telstra TP2 or a North American TP2 (such as AT&T or some Canadian ones).

yeah Telstra does have 2G, but the whole reason of me switching is the Next G network.
can anyone with an Telstra branded TP2 post their ROM and Radio, plz.
wondering if changing the radio will fix it. I find it hard to believe that HTC manufactures TP2s, as well as Diamond2 or even Touch HD, just for Telstra.

I have the US 3G Diamond, have used dozens of ROMs and all have worked fine.
I may be wrong, but I don't think you can use a ROM from PPC Geeks, as these are for the Verizon/Sprint CDMA versions of the Diamond, as opposed to GSM versions with WCDMA high speed data.
I have a Telstra branded diamond, and i have loaded a few cooked ROMs on it so far. Also put the 1.00.25.05 radio on it and noticed an incredible jump in battery life (even though it was technically a 'downgrade' from the stock radio)

"Rogers" diamond use in Asia(Hong Kong), no 3g signal

I have already do some research and i have read many posts in the forum.
I want to know if there any method to solve the problem now?
I have a HTC diamond which is "rogers" brand.
I use it in Honk Kong, all the things work perfectly, but i can not get the 3G signal
In the forum, i have gotten some information,
Rogers is 850/1900 MHz
Asia(Hong Kong) is in 900/1800 MHz
Is there any program to solve my problem?
Or it is the hardware problem, no software can solve it
Thank you for your help
Yes, you are right. Rogers Diamond will not work in HK 3G. HTC seems to have different version of their phone for US and the rest of the world.
So, no need to buy HTC phone in Asia or other country. It will not work in N.A.
Only a few old model will work in HK 3G and NA 3G such as
HTC TytnII
HTC Curise

He is right....and actually so are you, it is a hardware dilemma. Eventually they will make all phones truly a world phone in all aspects. Not half, half....

Will this HTC Desire work with At&t USA?

Its quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/2100MHz
So I figure it should work. It seems to be a good price too, at $574. Unless anyone knows a cheaper buy.
It'll work without 3G
Actually, if you get the Telstra branded HTC Desire, a.k.a. A8183, then it should work on 850mhz 3G/WCDMA.
There was apparently an issue with the original Telstra ROM on the Desire, where GPS would not work. A fix has been issued on April 30th, and I'm currently waiting for eXpansys to bring it back in stock so I can order myself one.
Any other dealers out there who carry the A8183 in stock for a fair price? Oh and that ship to North America/Canada?
So, I have to get this version here, "HTC Desire A8183 Telstra Unlocked" To get the 3g speeds on att in the usa? DAMMIT. It sucks that they keep releasing one version that costs $200 more just to get 3g speeds. The version I found for $574 was the a8181, not 83.... makes all the difference i guess. Anyone know where to get the HTC Desire "A8183 Telstra Unlocked" cheap-ish? I found it for like $800, but, damn!
Cannot help you in where to find it but you do need to check with AT&T in your area and make sure it is using the 850 band. My understanding is that not all areas have the 850 band.
i bought mine from here it was pricey, but had to have!

You can also buy it from here - http://www.htcphonestore.com/htc_desire.asp
I don't know how reliable the store is, but I think they maybe located here in the U.S.

Desire A8181 on Rogers

I picked up the A8181 in Hong Kong and am having some difficulty getting the handset to get any sort of high speed.
I've read through a few threads saying that not having the 3G/H icons is, simply, an icon issue. However, in my case, I can only get E (EDGE).
*#*#INFO#*#* -> Phone Info shows a Network type = EDGE
I have set the APN for Rogers/internet.com.
Any thoughts? Any successful Rogers users here?
Go to you Mobile Network setting and try to choose WCDMA only Network
I'm on Rogers too (well, fido) and i got the A8183 model because I know Rogers does not support 3G on the 900+2100mhz spectrum. I went through this crap with my Xperia X1i, but luckily Rogers activated 3G on the 1900mhz band to take advantage of visitors during the 2010 Winter Olympics (roaming data rates anyone?)
I may be wrong, but i'd say the future looks bleak for your 8181 on Rogers 3G. The A8183 works though, as it's from Telstra in Australia.
Do let us know if you end up getting it to work though!
Cheers

I'm afraid the A8181 wont work on Rogers/Telus/Bell 3G. Those networks use the 850/1900 MHz bands for 3G whereas the A8181 is 900/2100 (Wind Mobile uses those I believe)
For 3G on Rogers you'll have to get the A8183 Telstra model (as mentioned earlier )

What does A8181 stand for?

According to my "about phone", phone identity, model number, my device model is A8181.
As far as I know, there is A8381 (or something like that too).
Can someone share what is the difference between this two models?
Thanks.
I think it's to do with differentiating between hardware versions. Different markets have different standards, i.e. the US and Japan use a different UTMS frequency for maobile data to the ROW thus might need a slightly different hardware version for full compatibility. Or, there may be a slightly different hardware versions over the life of a product which may come about through the guise of "continuous product improvement".

The A8181 and A8183 are essentially identical, except for the radio bands that they support 3G on. For the most part, if you are on Telstra in Australia, Rogers in Canada, or AT&T in the US, you need an A8183 otherwise you need an A8181.

Dave
Thanks alot for clearing this up for me
8181 in Australia
I,m in Australia, my desire is a 8181, seems to work like a dream, if the other version is better for Australia then I,d like to know more
I believe you only need the A8183 in Australia if you want to use the phone on Telstra.

Dave
Hi,
I have tried searching the forums but I can't seem to find whether the custom ROMs will work with A8181 or A8183.
Thanks!

I've flashed DeFrost and OpenDesire and I'm having no problems (got an A8183).
As for the difference between the A8181 and A8183, does anybody know if there's a physical hardware difference between the two?
If it's just a software problem, theoretically, couldn't the radio rom be hacked to use all 3 bands?
it's hardware
Both work fine in Australia on any carrier.
The A8181 works on the 2100mhz frequency which all AUS carriers work on (yes - even Telstra).
The A8183 works on the 850mhz frequency, which is the Telstra NextG frequency, so either model will work on Telstra.
Main advantages of NextG (as claimed by Telstra) are faster data speeds and better coverage compared to 2100mhz.
So, A8181 for 3g and A8183 for NextG.
ROMs arent model specific, however with radio upgrades you may find some suit your carrier/area better than others.
I am using a Telstra Desire with an Optus sim and it works fine. I still get H for connection and it's pretty fast internet. When I have full coverage webpages load in just a second or so, and it's more then fast enough to stream movies and music.
okay, so i've got a newbie question to ask.....mine's A8181, and im in toronto using Rogers, but so far i've been using wifi only, no 3G data plan for me as of now......my question is, is it totally unusable for the 3G with Rogers? cuzi heard ppl told me its still usable, but with a little bit performance deduction....perhaps as not 100% fast as it should be.....anyone got a clue for me?
