6.5.3 RAM issues? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Is anyone else having severe RAM issues with 6.5.3? After a day I'm down to less than 20MB free if I have Opera open! I think it might be something I install. Here is the list of CABS I install that I think could have some effect on the system.
ShowcaseSuite (I disable auto-run, only manual launch with a mapped button)
SdkCerts
Coreplayer
RhodiumKeyboardControl (button remap program)
Palringo 2.0.0
PowerSMS
Resco Explorer
reSTART
RunGPS
Skype
TomTom 7
My biggest suspicion is ShowcaseSuite. What task manager do you all use on 6.5.3?

What rom specifically are you using?

I'm currently on RRE but I had this problem on EnergyROM, too. I didn't seem to have this problem on the official 6.5 ROM though, but I wanted 6.5.3.

Same issue here.. you might want to post this to the RRE thread...

Do you use any of the same programs as me?

The only two that match are CorePlayer and TomTom
But it is the same with Co-Pilot.
Others are:
PhoneAlarm
g-alarm
beyondpod
pocketbible
Neoreader
Mortscript

What rom are you using? And manila 2.5?
I found on NRG's Rom I had about 40mbs spare at boot, and I switched to another rom I have about 70.

i also think showcase might be the culprit. i think more specifically its the showcase suite. im doing some testing right now with a vanilla installation of 6.5.3 to see if its whats slowing me down. ill report soon....

What is "Showcase?"

It depends on the pagepool setting of the ROM. A bigger pagepool will render you with a smaller pool of useable RAM upon startup. I know energy ROM's pagepool is set to 28mb. I always changed it to 16mb prior to flashing. So far works okay for me, and my memory utilisation never goes beyond 75%.

Usable RAM at startup is not the problem. The problem is growing RAM usage. It boots at say 70MB free, but after a day, even after I close everything except Opera, I'm down to around 15MB. If I close Opera around 30MB. That is 40MB that is just lost. GWES.exe seems to grow a lot, but as much as the lost RAM (though it is most of it).

Some Information about free ram needed

Hi folks and greetings from Bulgaria.
I wondering are is possible some one to tell me how to increase avaliable RAM in my HTC Universal, because I used a new Garmin Mobile XT beta navigation software and he's like RAM eating machine.
Right now I'm with Helmi AKU3.3/ver 1.1 ROM - and I'm realy impressed from that ROM, but unfortunately after clean install my free RAM goes to 23.7 MB and this is not enough for Garmin XT - every time when a need to start application I must Restart.
Is it possible to edit Helmi's ROM and remove Page pool size in order to release more RAM ?
Thanks in advanced

You can definitely edit Helmi's ROM to increase or decrease the pagepool size. But based on my experiments, decreasing the pagepool size also decreases the speed, and yes you are right, it will increase the available memory for the apps to use, but you are scrificing the speed applications run. You can definitely decrease it to as slow as a turtle's running speed, if you know what I mean.

Yeap I know exactly what this mean.
So is there some other trick to release a 2-3 MB ermanently?
I use SKtools to optimize my Universal, but I've managed to release no more than 500kb.

I too have problems with memory, which led me to experiment more on some free apps out there. This is a personal trick I just recently learned from all the AKU 3 versions that are coming out that I have been trying out that I would like to share with you and everyone.
I will attach OXIOS Memory CAB file below my post, you need both Oxios Hibernate and Oxios Close Apps for this trick to work.
This is the theory for the increase of memory: basically what I wanted to happen is to only have 1 application running in the background no matter what. Thus, opening another app automatically closes the other app, even just pressing the OK button. Just like what a Palm device does with regards to application handling.
One draw back though, you are eliminating the ability of the WM5 device to run multiple applications at the same time.
OK enough of the explanations, here is what you have to do:
1st: Download the copy of OXIOS apps I provided.
2nd: Run the CAB file to install.
3rd: Go to Windows>Start Menu>Programs>Accessories.
4th: Copy the shortcuts for both Oxios Close Apps and Oxios Hibernate.
5th: Go to Windows>Start Up.
6th: Paste both Oxios Close Apps and Oxios Hibernate.
7th: Perform a soft reset.
Basically this would make WM5 behave like a palm device. You can now only open one application at one time, thus ensuring you have enough memory for your current application to run.
You don't even need to close any app anymore manually, since it is done automatically for you now.
There are some exceptions to this however and they are:
1: Contacts Application
2: MMS Application
3: Calendar Application
4: Phone Application
These 4 apps can be opened all at the same time without closing automatically, a good thing because you want them to work together when sending messages or files. Plus, you also want the phone on at all times.
Good luck and let me know if you prefer this solution or suggestion.

Manilla2d trinity resources hog?

Hi, everyone on the forum, I was wondering if you were having trouble making manilly2d work smoothly on your trinities. My trinity becomes relatively sluggish and free memory drops pretty soon. When trying to use gps software it locks, freezes etc. Same with Opera browser.
How are your Trinities handling great looking manilla2d?
Use one of the ROMs with Manila2D cooked into. Its far better than installing it afterwards.

ROMS with Manila cooked in work only slightly slower, not enough to bother me at all. I think it all depends on what 3rd party software you then install on top.
The trick is either finding a Manila ROM which more or less everything you need it already (like Ervius's ROMS) or naked ROMS which have only the minimum (like Chalid's ROMS).
Also, I recommend using Mpenguin14's "M2DC (Manilla 2D Customizer)" to get rid of the Manila tabs at that the bottom that you don't really need. This reduces memory consumption and therefore improves performance. Some cooks are putting it into their ROMS, but there is a cab you can download too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427392

Thanks for all the advice I allready noticed beter performance with album and audio player tab turned off but nevertheless it seems slower.

I gave up on manilla and htc home. The clock can be replaced by PDC, weather by spb weather(there's probably a lighter solution though), app launcher by the start menu(people usually don't use a wide variety of apps, start menu can list the latest which will do just fine), sms/mms/calendar/tasks by the respective native plugins.
All the other apps are cute but useless, like, you already have a speed dial on the phone app, as for media just launch the respective apps.
manilla on trinity
Hi, I am happily running chalid's rom with Manilla2d - meaning that it runs correctly but can become quite slow (for example, A2DP skips if i keep wifi or other programs in the background). The problem, in my opinion, is not Manilla but...our trinity. The low amount of RAM makes any program which is consuming memory running slowly and/or lacking responsiveness. Try Igo8, for example, and plan a long route...this is true beyond manilla, and the less memory you have free, the more sluggish it becomes...
I came to the empirical conclusion that TNYYNT Roms are faster simply since he is keeping memory consumption/allocation low, and this is why Chalid's 0.8 is faster than any other manilla2d i've tried. For example, i was not able to run tomtom efficiently on ervius' rom - but it ALMOST works correctly with chalid's (which is based on TNYYNT as you know).
My conclusion: upgrade to touch HD ! it is the obvious way to improve the trinity: better screen, better CPU, better RAM....
lately i been using PDAviet ROM .44 and the manila user interface is relly fast and pleasant to use - the only think that I'm craving for is more RAM in the device
All is well if one application is running but have a few open and the sistem will complain
One thing that I see with this ROM is that if you start a memory intensive application - like opera 9 or your tube or tom tom it will close the ManilaUI temporarly and restart it automatically when you close the application so everything runs fast - but only one thing at the time

Hi Pzucchel.
Thanks for your advice the other day on sd cards.
I have a new Kingston 4GB Micro SD (SDHC) Card coming tomorrow and going to reinstall Tomtom 6 onto it. Then I have to pick a ROM! I love the Manila 2D interface, have tried practically all of the current ROMS, but I can't have Tomtom letting me down.
When you say Tomtom ALMOST works on Chalid's, what happened? Did it come out of the program half way through a journey?
And on Ervius' Rom... were you not even able to start Tomtom?
Mattster.
I switched back to a non manilla2d rom and my trinity is flying again! Windows are opening fast and overall performance is better, igo 8 works without crashing. Manilla looks great but I'm gonna hold back for now! Bye all
64M Ram a problem, but here is a work around
pzucchel has raised the main issue- it's not the code, the ROM the M2D or iGO8. Our Trinity is only 64M RAM, and with operating system, if we have 25-27M free RAM we are lucky. Running M2D will normally eat up 10M or so more. With careful memory management it will not slow down our phone. however it will not allow to have M2D as a today plug-in and run iGO8...
Having M2D in the cooked ROM helps a bit as far as speed (not significant) but will not help in memory management. So that was the *****ing part of the post. now let's have a work around. It is not a solution- yet it will allow us to enjoy M2D and iGO8 without getting crazy, and without a need to reset the phone 7 times a day...
1. Install a naked ROM. Look for ones that allow 25M free RAM after installation. There are few of them. If they are naked+M2D and leave 20M free, it is good enough. Having M2D in the ROM means no M2D updates possible. Having M2D installed manually means lots of work and a bit slower performance- each one knows what's best for himself.
2. install SKTOOLS 4.4.1 (Buy it! it worth the investment). Optimize to maximum memory. Our good old trinity works fast enough even with this setup. Also- turn shadow services on to free RAM. Don't mess up with anything else there. We are after more free RAM ONLY !
3. Install mToday. It's a small nifty free tool, that allows the user to switch easy between today plug-ins. Set M2D on one screen, and iGO8 on the 2nd one. Assign a key for mToday so by a push of a button you can switch M2D off and get iGO8 plug in on... For the lazy ones I am attaching it.
4. Make sure the following lines are in your sys.txt in the IGO8 folder. I mean the one in main memory under program files, not the SD folder, although for recovery purposes, make them both identical:
[debug]
cache=2048
reserve_memory=1500000
[navigation]
sim_speed_factor=3
True- it still will not allow using TTS , but that is kind of pushing the limits of the phone. I could use TTS if I turn the phone off, kill 3G and GPRS, push no mail, etc. but after all if I wanted a GPS device only, I could have bought one..
5. For TomTom users- same thing - kill M2D using mToday and keep running it. I did not try TT7 but TT6 was very much an easy run on the trinity, before I moved to iGO8.
Special thanks to the cookers, current and the ones who left this forum, for their dedication, time spent for this community, and insight. I am merely a tester, and I hope this post will make some other trinity users happy campers.
Cheers
BigE

but before i run igo, i have to close all running apps first.
like bigE mentioned, invest in SKTools. It's a great utility. I have its "free ram" apps as one of my shortcut. i always run it bfore i run any gps apps.
iGO8 and M2D- is it really running together?
rockuman_ex,
Yes, iGO may seem to work with while M2D is on, but, is it really? Here are some observations:
1. Choose to calculate a 1,000 mile away destination when they both are on - even with SKTOOLS I am running out of memory for iGO.
2. Have them both run, and try answering a call at the same time. Even with 1.5M reserved for 'non iGO' use in the sys.txt - most likely phone will freeze.
I have no experience with TT7. I have abandoned TT for iGO because I am travelling to destinations I could not have maps for TT in the TT6 era. I have got spolied by iGO and can't go back to TT, although I have to admit TT is making more sense for the trinity. But like all of us- I want it all...
I regretfully think that in the near future I will go with another HTC phone, waiting for AT&T to offer the HD here in the US. I have spent around $700 for the trini about 18 months ago, no realizing 64M will kill me so quick. Oh well- that is what we call experience, learning from mistakes...

RAM usage (question)

Hi, can anyone explain the reasons why a ROMs RAM usage is high?
For example, the ROM I am currently using is up at 90%. After a reboot its around 75% and it doesnt take long to get up to 90%. If I use free RAM on level 1 it tells me "No change". If I use level 2 then it ruins touch flow 3d and I need to reboot.
I only need more RAM to run applications, but my idea is that regardless of the applications installed, if none are running then the RAM usage shouldnt be that high.. ? For example, you could install loads of stuff on your windows XP machine, but RAM only gets used when you load the applications right... ?
I have run task manager, and in the order of most RAM usage here are the things running currently at 92% RAM
gwes.exe 24394 kb
cprog.exe 7920 kb
device.exe 3658 kb
manilla.exe 3553 kb
shell32.exe 2705 kb
services.exe 2686 kb
filesys.exe 2289 kb
dotTaskMgr.exe 97 kb
connmgr.exe 96 kb
tmail.exe 45 kb
SAPSettings.exe 1 kb
NK.EXE 1 kb
total 47445 kb (or almost 50mb of RAM)
Now, I know that manilla consumes WAY more ram than titanium. But I prefer manilla!
Does any ROM cookers give me a brief understanding of why certain ROMS use more RAM than others?
I've even gone as far as changing the theme but to be honest I dont think it made any difference..
I am a complete N00b but I like to read and use google so if people can give me some direction I will go away and do some research!
Thanks!

Hi Guys!! Thanks for both your replies. So I googled about the page pool as I had heard this mentioned before. It's a little like virtual memory on PC's right?
So I used the page pool changer to tell me what my rom has as it's pagepool and from what I can tell, I have 8mb.. Do you agree? I've attached a screenshot.

Yea I understand! Do you know why it gradually increases the ram usage up to over 90% though?
try with changing pagepool (8mb-12mb)
there are many ways to get more free ram... easier is pagepool but if you lower pp you will loose rom speed so it's not the best choice... other things have to be done by the cooker not the rom user.
Obviously if you use manila+phonecanvas+wm6.5 you will have a high memory usage rom...
edit: between if you want a good program to free the max of ram, use the one i made in my signature.. but you will have to configure it for your apps

I don't mind taking ROMs apart and playing with things. I would like to learn how to cook
Thanks for the App.
Defiantly agree with the OP.
I had NRG's Rom installed, and I'll say he manila and titanium on his ROM is mega fast. Every animation is so fluent, so much eye kandy and hi-res icons...
Was perfect...
Till I started to actually use programs that couldn't even start. I was on mainila looking at photos, and hit 'album' but cant open the album. can't use the camera.couldn't play games or anything..
currently on Benkos full ROM, is a little buggy, animations aren't so fluid but usally are fine however am pleased i can actually use programs.
I could NOT use manila but same as OP, I prefer it.. I'm keen on the later versions which have colour icons on the slider etc... Not so keen on titanium but i prefer everything else on 6.5. I'm wondering if I really need to use 6.5 as it does use a whole lot more RAM than 6.1
Think about it... what are the real differences between WM 6.1 and 6.5? Do you really need the 6.5 start menu? Titanium? WM Slide to unlock?
The problem about the WM6.5 is the graphics and windows event service (gwes). It consumes to much RAM. Phones with 128MB RAM are made to run WM6.1
Try this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=565243&highlight=akeo
It is stable, fast, a lot of free RAM and very clean. And if you still need more RAM, just try to disable TF3D and tachi phone canvas. You are going to get 38% used RAM after boot. I installed IphoneToday 1.2.5 (very lightweight and fast) and S2U2. After boot I still get ~40% of used RAM (~70MB free RAM).
I'm pretty sure I need WM6.5... After using 6.1 for a whole year and getting frustrated at the little things, like looking through phone contacts, dragging the list up a tiny bit and then the phone automatically scrolling all through my 200 contacts to the bottom.. then if I tried to go back, I would end up right back at the start. WM6.5 fixes all the things that either I hated, didnt work in 6.1 or both.
I'm learning how to cook now so I can just build a ROM that I'll use for myself.
WM6.5 isn't really much but ram-hungry, eyecandy graphics. The scrolling is improved, that's correct, but with Sense 2.5 (newest Manila) you will barely need to use the old scrolling of WM6.1 as most stuff is integrated. I can warmly recommend Kisja's WM 6.1 with Sense 2.5, although you might wanna wait for the final release (in RC1 now).
The reason for your high RAM usage is mostly graphics - phone canvas, Manila and some WM6.5 graphics. The more tabs in Manila you open, the more RAM it uses. The WM6.5 screenlock also consumes alot of RAM. In addition, there are (and will always be) some memory leaks in WM. Don't ask me why, it just is like that. Therefore you need to use RAMsweeper, cleanRAM or other cleaners every once in a while.
I recommend you to disable the WM6.5 screenlock and use either the old WM or TouchLockPro which is a great piece of software.
I have to agree with the topic.
I've been searching for a good Diamond rom, but can't seem to find one.
I personally don't care about the OS on my phone. 6.1 seems to work well enough.
I do want manilla 2.5 though. It looks better and it's really easy to use with the finger buttons.
Maybe someone could help me out.
I am looking for the following rom:
- Manilla 2.5
- Ability to switch automatic to landscape in; Manilla, contacts and texting windows (don't care about the rest but it would be nice)
- Fast and stable. So for daily use.
- Not to heavy on RAM. I still want to be able to use all my apps.
- CLEAN.
Things I don't care about:
- OS. 6.1 or 6.5 both are welcome
- Playing music.
- Extra apps except for the essentials.
- Enhanced looks. Plain HTC black works fine.
So; clean, fast, stable, RAM friendly and manilla 2.5.
A rom for standard daily usage. Calling, browsing contacts, texting, maybe browsing the web every now and then AND using GPS on SOME occasions.
This is WAY to much to ask for a Diamond rom. But maybe someone could help a guy out.
This one is nice, stable & fast

wm6.5 eat RAM

Hi all, after install WM6.5, it seem the RAM is always on high consumption. even I cancel the running program, the ram still not back to lower ratio. I have tried install some FreeRam program for WM6.1 but it seems doesn't work on WM6.5, anyone have new freeRAM program for WM6.5?
HTCAddicts.com's CleanRAM works fine in WM 6.5 (www.htcaddicts.com)
Hi,
Unfortunatly it does not work as the only thing it is doing is closing and restarting apps.
You can do this manually with pretty same results.
But the problem of WM6.5 or HTC Sense or whatever I don't know is Memory Leak concerning GUI handling. Take a look a gwes.exe memory consumption at start and then at the end of a regular use day with all apps closed. GWES.EXE will take twice memory than it took when you soft resetted.
And I think nobody has find a way yet to get rid of this problem.

Thomas

oh, I did mean to use cleanRAM manually (actually, mode 3) ... guess you're technically right, tho
Thanks! I think use this better than nothing. About the final solution, it may need to wait the HTC update ROM to settle this problem.... so sad!!
try to make the shared memory smaller
this problem is caused by the shared memory.
HKLM/ Software /HTC / Resloader
look for that registry setting and recalculate it to half. that might solve your ram issues. I had to do it with my Kaiser running M2D. Fixed my problem when I set it to 3mb (1024 x 3 = 3mb.) You need to make sure that the math is correct so that you are not wasting any sectors. 1mb increments works well.
I would reserve at least 10mb for TF3D as opposed to the 3mb for M2D.
Use this at your own risk and make sure you backup first, in case you will have to do a hard reset.
also, in order to see actual memory usage for processes you should use the MS task manager, not the DF TaskManager. MS gives you accurate readings, while DF lets you close processes.
I just tried setting it to zero. no harmfull efects.
thanks for your advise, I don't know how to caclulate this but task manager could help. may I ask when can I found the task manager?

Free RAM is only 13MB :o

I am running kavana's WM6.1 English only. It has max free RAM is locked out at 13-14MB (even with Celetask 2.0c's g0dly free memory tweak).
What causes the ram go so low?
When I am running on wife with IE and WMP running in background, My phone gets chocked and I experience severe lockups. On previous T-Mo official rom, it was 22MB
(I was able to get 28MB free on my HTC Torndo w/ WM6.5 previously)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6000605&postcount=342
Also WM is notorious for leaks on PPC we use CleanRAM but not available on SP.
Best bet is to close processes and use Celetask free RAM.
What about having a pagepool of 8mb? and how can I define it without cooking the rom / editing nbf sorry I am noob at rom cooking stuff.
I just want to run Opera Mobile 10 flawlessly with HTC Audio Manager Running in background. Will it work awesome with 4MB?
I am downloading the 4MB pagepool one you have posted the permalink here
You can change the PP with instructions here no need to cook just patch the .nbh .
Try the ROM provided as runs very smooth also it's the light version so gives more space another way to free tiny bit more is disable MSVC
The PP balances speed v's RAM but on 4.5 with Ricky Remade you hardly notice it, on 6.5's it's a very different story as they using far more processes to start with and lowering the PP really slows it down.
Opera Mobile i'm still running 8.6 "think that's the one" put it this way my gf uses the Excalibur and never has any issue using net etc even though she never shuts down anything lol
downloaded, flashed and running flawlessly (just installed my Celetask 2.0c)
Now Installing Opera Mobile 10. Will report
Also installation to storage card is a bit slower than the default kavana's rom, I sniff it.
