Hello,
I know many of those "rom-cookers" whant to realise their "own" rom, but at the moment there are so many cooked roms... so no one know which is the right (newest, fastest, most stable, most features etc.).
Wouldn't it be intelligent to work all together on one "xda-rom"... perhaps we can reache a better, and faster development if we all work together on one "XDA-Developers-ROM".

yes and no... because we all have our own different opinions...
there are really only 3 different ROMS...
Black 2.5 has its own source
Dutty v2 has his own source
lsvw has its own source
where is the Custell 1.2 was derived from the Dopod leaked beta ROM which has a few HSDPA issues and an older source ROM
xda-live is based on the original vinalla ROM that was leaked months ago...

thats why no one has reported them... Honestly if you don't have anything good to say keep your ****ing mouth shut seeing no one asked for your opinion in the first place.
So, meaning to say, we can safely test only Black, Dutty, and LSVW, to see which one is better?...I understand it is a matter of preference, but some rom doesn't have what the other have...
Anyway, it is more fun to test and sort out all problem with all the roms, but sometimes, when they all realeased just about the same time... you have to pick one. Currently I'm on Black v2.5 from Dutty v1....

its as simple as that... he wanted to know the information to where the sources came from and the differences so i told him...
calm down... i think there are a box of tissues in your kitchen cupboard.... you sound like you need them...
i was refering to the issues with the Dopod Source... i did not say that you hadnt fixed those issues or found workarounds for them... so calm down chump...

Dude sorry but there was no need for that kind of reaction, the whole point behind cooked roms is that they are not perfect, ive had to make MANY MANY ammends to my guides site because of mistakes etc... walshy was providing informative answers to the OP, you have already provided two new versions of CUSTEL WM6 (1.1 and 1.2) so why go ape**** when somebody points out another fault???!
Uhhh... I think the reason(s) for some of the chefs not wanting to collaborate might have just revealed themselves.

pulling forces to create a better rom would be the logical thing to do, but i guess theres too many "creative differences" between each chef. as well as too many fanboys and haters for each flavour.
why cant we all just get along? this forum is going downhill fast... please stop making it into another howard forums

what about building an application that merges a rom from selectable "blocks"... so evry user can merge his own rom out of standard-parts (base + packagex + packagey etc).
many of those roms have greate performance but are overloaded with apps no one needs.
with a possibility to build an own rom by simply selecting some packages everyone can realise his own ideas and we all can work together on those standard packages.
perhaps an online-directory for those packaes would by cool (like installaling software on linux)... at the moment it is realy hard to find al thos packages in thier newest version
Don't worry about it too much - eventually, the aformentioned fanboys and haters will go away, fascinated with their next new shiny toy leaving behind those of us who are genuinely interested in the technology and the device and taking the whole thing forward.
Custel, you over-reacted to walshie's post, end-of. As far as I could tell, he was simply offering an explanation of where the various ROMs began their life without favouring one in particular.

This is completely wrong. I have used and tested all of the ROMs. Yes. They do have a few select programs added to each of them. No. They are not overloaded!!! It is storage memory which is mostly empty. The add-ons if you were to actually look are very small. The only slightly bigger app would be any PDF viewer added. And that is still no biggy. A merged ROM---hmm well---who cares. A none FAULTLY ROM ---hmm well ---Thats what im all for!!! Peace

im with you on that one... mod lock the thread
simply put u cant merge roms because there are people that enjoy the cingular versions people that enjoy the dopod versions people that enjoy certiain features that dont pertain to others. It would be a nice concept but where dealing with roms which include many variations of options and mods that cater to those who benefit from it. So in essense there can be no one rom for anyone thats why even providers have different versions for diff markets. Its just no possible to have one version .Not with different providers and programs etc.
And i wouldnt bash any of the cookers out there because there doing a hell of a job some of there roms are almost close to being a OEM rom . I mean seriously there beating the microsft at there own game . These wm6 roms are fantastic . So why hate when your not contributing to the people as they are. Breaking down roms etc is fine but hoenslt ythe majority of us dont care where they come from we just reap the results from the cookers work and effort. I believe that it really imature to try to bash or disparage people that are apart of the whole opensource game. I mean there doing this for us ya know. And it takes hella time to do what they do something that the people talking trash do not put the time and effort to do.
Just before the threa gets locked I'djust like to re-iterate that we all have our own opinions on what makes a good rom so you'll never get one XDA ROM to suit everyone. Just look at Dutty - he releases 3 in one go as some like it clean, others with tools etc.
Let's all just be grateful for what we get and work together to solve the main, common issues that affect WM6 as a whole.
Which WM6-Rom is the best for the XDA-Trion??
Thanks for your Help

Just as a few examples of all the other people who asked the same sort of question.
The simple answer? The best ROM is the one that you like best. There's no right answer. But make sure you do your research first - if you go flashing them without doing HardSPL, then you might end up with a nice new shiny paperweight.
There's a list of some of the ROMs at the wiki, where your journey should have begun. There's also some excellent guides over at MrVanx's site.
(In another note... when are people going to do their research? :-/)
Be thankful I wrote this before everyone else tears your head off...
"The simple answer? The best ROM is the one that you like best."
What if this guy is evil and considers the best ROM to be the one that you like the least?
for me i cant sem to decide. Ive had em all, well a lot of of em anyway. I keep switching back and forth. But yeah definately read read read. Some do run a bit faster than other been when it comes down to it, its gonna be personal liking. Good luck
i would like some more articles on these roms... with pro's and cons and just what they are more focusing on... that way readers can pick of off some lists or specs... but that isnt always clear or easy to find.
Good documentation and or reviews of roms is what is needed, for the new person or for ppl who simply want to try a different rom, ya for the advanced users who have tried almost all it doesnt help but for rest of us I can see already that nauturally most of the authers are going to be biased to some way with there roms.. and this should be documented and then the right readers/users will be targeted much better thus more ppl that are too

Likes/dislikes, reviews, and comparisons for each ROM can be found in the threads dedicated to those ROMs. Simply read what every who has replied has to say about it.
yes that is one way, and very unreliable way and painfully slow way... reading through all of it...
what has to be done is a contest between individuals who write reviews/articles... then people can vote based on how they feel for that review... after the winner... other suggestions or ideas are compiled from the other articles into wiki...
there you go one centralized idea/view by the majority vote
updates have to be added from time to time.. with solutions or new bugs and features...
do you know how many threads would be reduced if something like this was incorporated?
I prefer vp3G's ROMs.

A "contest" is unnecessary, and a list of suggestions/ideas would be just as hard to wade through.
As the Hermes is nearing the end of its development cycle, this will be a moot point soon. But if you want to put something together, the best idea would be a review website. Instead of saying which is better, just list all of the features that each ROM has, along with screenshots and metrics on battery life and speed. Then people can decide on their own which is better.
vp3g's rom is the best.. but thats cause im partial to ATT

Yes, it is slow. But flashing a Hermes ROM is not something you rush. Always do your homework.
I disagree on the unreliable part, however. Its like when software is developed, they dont have ONE person test it, because bugs, etc. can be overlooked easily. They have MANY testers. The replies to the threads are from the, if you will, testers of the ROM. They report good and bad. I don't know any better way, besides trying for yourself. I personally research tho.
personal opinion either of shamanix or schaps roms have been stable and worked for me pretty well

Hi, as I am not overly fond of the android operating system,
is the hardware such that you could flash a 6.5 windows mobile rom onto the desire?
is it worthwhile trying?
It is impossible, android is open source and thus can be modified to run on diffrent hardware, windows mobile isnt, plus we have diff bootloaders to winmo phones so a flash wud be impossible

Do people literally NEVER use the search feature then?

Use the bloody search.
its not a foolish question, i have been active on various sections of xda developers forums and have contributed and gained from each of them, tinkering with a variety of models, I was thinking of buying a desire but wanted to see just how much I can mess with it first .
I have found the majority of people on these forums to be helpful and whilst I understand your frustration, I will be new to this part of the site. And with so many threads its not always easy to find exactly what your looking for
What differs in the hardware to make it impossible? is it just partitioning of the space on the phone? surely if someone wrote a bootloader it would be possible?
If you want to dual boot, you might want to get a HD2 instead, my understanding is that the android rom is in developement.
The desire is pretty much a pure Anroid phone, im not sure that there would be much demand to get winmo workingon it since most people have switched from winmo out of choice and don't really feel the need to go back, but thats just my slant on it. crazier things have happened on this forum.
For starters the drivers were written using the android open source project, every single driver for every tiny piece of hardware would habe to be rewritten lol
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
i have read your other posts and understand your frustrations but the whole reason I buy each model is to see how much I can mess with it
would be interesting to see such development in the ROM developement section
but if there is a technical reason why its impossible ( apart from the lack of SPL)
then someone please tell me, as I have not brought the handset yet hehe
what I always say is where there is a will there is a way
as for why ? i dont know... just to see if it can be broken - whats the point in having system you cant break or change Zzzzz
although I do appreciate somethings are impossible.
Can some one explain (if any) the differences in hardware from the hd2 to the desire that will make this task impossile ?
would be much appreciated xxx thanks
I doubt it'd be impossible - but it's take a huge ammount of R&D and developers on here don't have that sort of time/money to undertake such a task...
Just get an HD2 if you want WinMo (can buy my old one if you want? )
The rock bottom is it wud be illegal, it would be in violation of microsofts intelectual rights and for that matter is neva gunna happen here, when we owned windows phones we bought a licence to use windows mobile, with our desire we get no such licence, this would also make it piracy
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
With that argument surely baking and distributing custom ROMs would also be illegal? Do that on a Windows PC and you'd get sued!!
But yeah, agree with you
Microsoft have tried to shut xda dwn for that reason many times, but they have always backed down, if a project lyk this was started on a non winmo phone i guarantee they wudnt

Aitese, I do understand your frustration, multiple posts are a no no yes, but I was putting a different slant on it. ie I didnt really grasp from the other threads technically what was stopping us from achieving this task so thats not stupid in my opinion and hasnt been broken down in major detail. My curiosity is that the HD2 and desire seem exactly the same in terms of hardware, yet people suggest that swapping operating systems is impossible.
however, I do now accept that it may not be worth doing
but none of the previous threads seem to explain why that is in any great technical detail (no doubt ul find this now haha), at least now we have discovered whats stopping some one from doing it.
ps I reserve all right to be a lazy noob, to my knowledge I have not broken any other forum rules, as this is not exactly a double post, similar subject yes but if anything this thread would save a curious person like myself from attempting something that might be infringement ..
at least now I wont try

ps what varies from the desire to the hd2 in terms of hardware
looks like nowt
love this thread!
ive been trying to get away from my touch HD to android - had to go via a free HD2 upgrade to get here......trust me, windows needs a major overall to tempt me to go back
thats what everybody says .. but my curiosity is that in terms of hardware specs the hd2 and the desire look the same, apart from a bit more ram on the desire ?!?
so... er ... why would the drivers vary that much ?
pls be patient with me I just like messing with stuff
on further playing with android I must say it does seem to have the edge over win mob
persisting with this annoying thread (sorry guys) but what is to stop me using mtty to format my device and flashing the hd2 stock rom to the desire?
ie what would the compatibilty issues be? (as by looks of it hardware is the same give or take a bit of extra ram)
could this be done, and would it just be a case of using a tweaked RUU that would ignore the model number? would this work?
I am guessing the buttons would have to be remapped but what other compatibilty issues would there be ? basically is it possible or is the file structure totally different in a way that would not allow it?
(ps sorry if its something obvious and im making myself look a dummy but from what I can see the HD2 and the Desire are very similar in spec)
The fact that the HD2 can boot Android, WinMo6.5, and Windows Phone 7 makes me mad and jealous.
I don't know how many of you there are out there that would like to have the ability to run anything but android on our phones. I agree, Android is superior and is amazing and all, but I get bored sometimes and before you tell me to flash a new ROM... in the end they're all Android. Why not have the ability to flash different OPERATING SYSTEMS onto our phone? I mean hey, if the HD2 can do it so can we!
I understand there is a great deal of work involved in all of this but I'm sure there are others out there like myself who would enjoy such a feature. I created this thread in order to bring those people together so maybe we could find a few developers interested in getting this going.

I've been following the dual boot project and it's definitely something I'm going to make use of (Running CM and a Sense rom... what's better than that?), but at the same time I know there's a handful of people who are interested in running winmo or windows phone 7 on their EVO. This is an amazing piece of hardware and I think it'd be great if we could figure out a way to make more things work on it.

The dev support for the HD2 is superior to the EVO because of its worldphone (GSM) capabilities. Although it would be awesome to have the choices, I doubt it will ever happen on a Sprint device.
It kinda sucks because I feel like the phone has so much potential if it were running on more OS's
Well, it's officially been two months since I got my G2. What else is there left for me to do?
- I've already got SIM Unlock, superCID, and radio S-OFF.
- I've already got CM7 Nightly 92 w/ Pershoot's latest Gingerbread kernel.
- I've already got backups of Virtuous, Virtuous G-Lite, and CM7.
- I've already installed Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and set up lxde.
- I've already overclocked and underclocked my CPU.
What else is there left for me to do? Can I dual-boot between different mobile operating system platforms (i.e. Symbian^3/Maemo 5, Windows Mobile, HP webOS/Palm OS, etc.)? Can I do ANYTHING else other than flash a ROM/Kernel and overclock? Or is this it?
You have done pretty much everything there is to. The next step is start cooking up your own stuff. I'm guessing you all ready have adb working. You can download apk manager http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701 and start doing some themeing of your own or port some themes for your favourite roms.
And if your feeling really adventurous have a go at building your own roms, there is a really easy to use rom kitchen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246

I'm already cooking up a custom ROM.
punjabiM0D? It's in my signature.
You gotta be kidding me. So you're telling me there's no way I can get Maemo/Symbian^3/webOS on my phone as a dual-boot? Is there at least a ROM of Touchwiz or even MOTOBLUR? I'm sick and tired of HTC Sense.
On the xda app so can't see your Sig. Siulmagic did do a droid x port http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051229 so you can give motoblur a try.
The HD2 is the xda king everything seems to work on it. Our lowly G2/DZ are not in the same leauge.
It may be possible to port some of the OS's you mentioned but i dont believe anyone is curently work on them. But i would love to be proved wrong.
How is your custom rom coming? If you need anyone to test I'm all ways happy to help. I have a really quiet job which provides me with a lot of spare time and a decent internet connection.

Windows Phone 7 is a closed platform, so its pretty close to impossible to port it to other platforms, in my understanding. I believe the only reason HD2 can run it, is because MS actually developed a WP7 version for HD2. As far as the old Windows Mobile versions, its obsolete and a pile, and the only reason to run it, is if you need to run some legacy software. Similarly, Symbian is all but dead at this point, as Nokia moves to WP7.

Not too familiar with the Blackstone, but probably just a matter of developer interest. The Blackstone seems to have pretty similar specs to my old Touch Pro 2 (in terms of CPU and memory), and the TP2 does run Android. Although the TP2 Android project was pretty slow and laggy when I last played with it in December or so (but it looks like a lot more work has been done on the project).

This is a bunch of ****!
I traded in my iPhone 4 for a G2, and I've already reached the end of the damn world in less than two months? Bull-****!!!!!!!
So not even another Linux-based operating system like Symbian^3, Maemo, or webOS can be installed on my G2?
Its a phone, and its designed to be used with its native OS. Not for loading other OSes willy-nilly, for your enjoyment.
Even if you could load other OSes onto it, so what? Would that radically change your smartphone experience, and what you do with you phone day to day? Not really.

Oh well pardon me for trying to make the most out of this thing.
Not even a ROM of Touchwiz or even MOTOBLUR?
Well then Mr. Know-it-all, What else is there left for me to do? I'm bored, I'm locked in a two-year agreement with a company that has spotty service, and I've already done nearly everything there is to do in the rooting universe.
Can YOU come up with anything else to do? What would you do if you were in my situation?

Well for starters you could settle down and control your compulsiveness to jack with your phone. Android is probably the best OS out there, no reason to port to an inferior one. You are the first I have heard that has wanted a port to all these other variances. Most others are happy with the Android OS and like the custom ROMs and ways we can customize our devices already.
My advice to you... find a well paying job, squander all your money with buying yourself a brand new phone every month or two without contract. Maybe port all this other crap yourself. You seem to complain a lot, so intead of doing that, make your own ports and ROMs. That oughta make you happy
you could download eclips and the android sdk start making your own apps
you could try and port touchWiz or motoBlur to your phone your self
i beleave there is a port for MeeGo for our phone but is is far to slow to do any thing on
EDIT: and by the way your coming over a a bit of a **** when people are trying to help you

I don't really know what you are expecting, its a phone. how much more could you want it do to? compare it a iPhone, then you would be limited. If your desperate for a Touchwiz or Motoblur Rom, port it your self. The reason why these ROM's haven't been done is because there not rated very highly particularly Motoblur.
You have a great phone with good dev support. appreciate it .

I'm not THAT impulsive.
I took my meds. (ADHD can do that to a kid)
I just feel trapped inside Google, Android, and HTC.
If Android really is as open-source as Google claims it to be, why do I feel so restricted?

I'm grateful for that much.
I just wanna figure out what else there is to do. Ironically, I feel restricted in an open-source operating system.

dude, what else do you want to do? I guess that's a good question to ask. There are literary tons of stuff to do with your phone. There are numerous ports with this phone you can try. You wanna play dual core games like samuarai vengeance 2 eventhough you don't have dual core? Go right ahead with chainfire3d. You can theme your phone how ever you want with icons, colors, ANYTHING. What other operating system allows you to do this? How would you be better off with ANY other OS? You can easily flash themes and such to make it looks like touchwiz, or motoblur. you can even make it look like honeycomb for goodness sake. Fool around with the UOT kitchen and cook up some fancy looking themes are icons.
I suggest you do a little searching around on xda, OTHER than the G2 thread because there are tons of stuff that apply to alot of phones that aren't just found in that device's forum. Its dumb for you to judge the one OS that actually ALLOWS you to do whatever you want to it.
The end.

PEANUT BUTTA JELLY TIME!!! GIVE SOMEBODY A HIGH 5..THEN SHOW THEM UR AWESOME ROM
pimped out g2
You could take a screw driver to your phone.. open it into pieces.. I don't think it would be so restricted anymore.

Giving my opinion does not make me a know-it-all, and nothing I said implies that I think I know more than you. You're going to come in here throwing around foul language and calling people names, and still expect people to give you ideas?
You seem fixated on just loaded different OSes, and just don't want to accept the answers people are giving you. People have already gave tons of suggestions. But you aren't interested in listening.
MotoBlur and TouchWiz are trash, anyway. Not much more than cosmetic changes to the launcher, and other general theming. You can easily mess around with those things yourself, as several others have already suggested.
