Hi there,
It was my understanding that if I use IE on my Touch HD then it will be detected as a mobile by some websites and therefore load a different version of the website. I was also of the understanding that this wasn't the case when using Opera and infact the sites would just see a normal browser and load the "real" page.
My understandings above may or may not be correct however now I've noticed that Opera is sometimes being diverted to mobile sites where it wasn't before. I think I may have upgraded the stock version in the past and I'm currently running build 15316.
Is there anything I can do to force "real" pages?
Thanks for any help/info
Justin
The solution!
Hi,
Just follow the next step.. open opera->click on left down corner -> settings -> advanced -> at the bottom select "indentify as"-> from the drop down menu select "Desktop computer"-> restart Opera
That's all !

In Opera 9.5 build 15613 i believe it is like that:
click on RIGHT down corner -> settings -> display -> verify that "mobile view" is NOT checked-> restart Opera
Thanks for the responses.
I don't have the menu options as mentioned in the first post. Maybe a different build?
And I do indeed have mobile view unchecked from the second post..

I too am interested to know the answer to this... For the most part it brings up full web pages, but BBC and Google sites always seem to bring up their mobile content.
Does someone have an answer? As stated above mobile view is unchecked in the options...

It probably depends on the website.
Some websites will have "sniffer" code built in that will query your device and get information out (eg OS/browser version/browser name etc etc). Nothing sinister - they're just trying to either collate user stats (eg to prove FireFox is gaining in popularity), or tweaking the look of the file slightly to improve the user experience / make sure the site renders correctly in different browsers.
I'm a web developer myself and use simple versions of these scripts to tweak CSS styling because different browsers follow the standards set in different ways.
So even if you've set your Opera to identify itself as "not" mobile version, the website you're looking at might well be looking at the actual OS (or something else entirely) to define how it presents the site to you.
Incidentally if you want to see the "User-Agent" information that a simple php browser sniffer gathers - see this link: It's basically the same sort of code that some people put links to in their forum signature bar.

You can't change it. It's not caused by Opera. It's the site that detects that you are using Opera Mini, and decides that you are to get a mobile site instead of the full site. Complain to the site.
Type opera:config in your address bar and poke around with the settings. It's in there somewhere.

No. The site does deliver correctly what the browser requested. It's definitely Opera sending the wrong request.

No, it's sending the right string. It's telling the site which browser it is. The wrong thing would be to lie about it.

No, Opera is just telling the site that it's Opera. The site is choosing what it does when it encounters Opera.
If Opera changed its user agent string to become unrecognizable, browser statistics would be messed up, and sites relying on browsers to be truthful would break.

So this anoying problem can be fixed by just changing one string or telling 3476587653745344378 sites to change the way they handle requests.
I think it wouldn't even mess up statistics. There are more reliable methods to identify the browser than by using the user agent. The desktop version for example is capable of identifying itself as IE or Firefox and it does not mess up statistics.
I don't get mobile versions of pages shown in Opera mobile so this should be possible in Mini too.

Of course it's possible in Mini. This has got nothing to do with Opera Mini's capabilities. It's the site that chooses to send you to a mobile site.
You can argue as much as you want, it doesn't change anythink about the fact, that O-mini does not show the expected content although it could be very easily be fixed. That's ultra-anoying on any high-res-device.
There's even a checkbox in Opera's options to chose if you want to see mobile-versions if available or not, but it's just ignored.
I'm pretty sure the string can be altered in a way that does both, full-size-content AND right statistics.
Check showip.com with Desktop-Opera. It shows your user agent. It changes when you set Opera to claim it's IE or FF, but they all still include "Opera" +version in that string. Stats can still identify it correctly no matter what you select.

I'm not arguing. I'm pointing out the fact that Opera Mini is simply showing the content that's being sent to it. I'm pointing out the fact that it's the site that's doing this. You are arguing because you evidently don't understand the subject matter.
There's even a checkbox in Opera's options to chose if you want to see mobile-versions if available or not, but it's just ignored.

No, that checkbox actually controls what Opera Mini does. It changes the way Opera Mini handles a page. This is completely different from the problem you are referring to, which has to do with what the site does when it detects that you are using Opera Mini.
I'm pretty sure the string can be altered in a way that does both, full-size-content AND right statistics.

No, because the sites that are sending Opera Mini to mobile pages are doing so specifically for Opera Mini. If Opera Mini changes its UA string, those sites will simply adapt to the new string, and send that to a mobile page as well. You will have gotten nowhere, except making other people's life harder.
Check showip.com with Desktop-Opera. It shows your user agent. It changes when you set Opera to claim it's IE or FF, but they all still include "Opera" +version in that string. Stats can still identify it correctly no matter what you select.

Again, the sites that send Opera Mini to a mobile version are specifically looking for Opera Mini. If you change the string to include other browsers, the page will still specifically look for Opera Mini. It would solve nothing, as explained above.
Stats can identify it correctly if you don't remove Opera Mini from the string. But you seemed to suggest that they simply hide Opera Mini completely, in which case those stats sites would not be able to detect it.
Finally, what more reliable methods to identify the browser than the user agent string are there?
This is getting too much blah blah for a trivial thing. It could be fixed but it's not --> not good
It does work with Opera mobile, that's proof enough that it could work with mini too, no matter how it works.
You are right about the checkbox "mobile view", that's "Small screen rendering mode" which is something else... misleading label.
Im not the expert that can tell you how exactly the user Agent string has to look like, but it's obvious that it could work with the right one.
(Forget about "more reliable methods", seams like it does all work fine with user agents only)

Opera Mini and Opera Mobile have different UA strings. Again, it's got nothing to do with "working with Opera Mini". This isn't caused by Opera Mini. It's caused by sites that detect that you are using Opera Mini.

I'm telling you that it couldn't. These sites that send Opera Mini mobile content do so because they chose to specifically do so for whatever reason. Changing the UA string would just piss these people off, and update their scripts to send mobile pages to the new UA string as well.
It's getting boring. Have fun with ugly unreadable pages while I surf the web how it's supposed to look.

I was wrong in a detail like I already said above. But that doesn't change anything about the rest. The problem can definitely be fixed in the Software, that's a provable fact I'm not going to discuss anymore. Saying the software is ok, just the rest of the world has to change to become compatible is just nonsense because it will not fix the problem because it will never happen.
Besides the alternative view does make sense on low end devices so it has to be Opera to decide witch view to load depending on the resulution of the device or better by the settings the user made. And don't tell me again it's not possible, that's just nonsense because it's not and does already work with other browsers.
The "problem" can't be "fixed" by Opera without breaking it for everyone else.
The rest of the world doesn't need to change. You are the one who wants sites who specifically send Opera Mini users to a mobile site to change.
As I already explained, this is not about "Opera views", this is about what kind of content a site sends to Opera. It "works" in other browsers because the sites are not sending them to a mobile site.
Again: Changing the useragen string would break ****loads of websites, and Opera would disappear from the stats. That, or the change will achieve exactly nothing, because the sites that are sending Opera Mini users to a mobile site are specifically looking for Opera Mini in the first place.
You need to stop making assertions when you are clearly severely lacking in knowledge on the subject. It gets worse when you blame Opera for something the site is doing, and claim that it's in Opera's hands.
Sure it's the Site that sends different content, nobody stated anything else. But it depends on the request made by the browser! And when I say it works in other browsers I'm NOT talking about desktop browsers. I use Opera mobile and it does what i want although I got the same results as with Mini with default settings.
In Opera mobile you just go to the setting and set "Spoof UserAgent ID" to "2" to mask as Mozilla. That does still leave "Opera 9.7" mentioned in the User agent and is still identified in browser statistics correctly, but this way you allways get fullsize content without breaking anything. Sure thing the same can be done to any other browser easily.
Maybe you just try it yourself and then we talk again who's got a lack of knowledge.
It's so funny reading all the time what's impossible while everyone can download other mobile browsers and see with own eyes that it's not.

Again, that is because other browsers have a different UA string, and the sites haven't started specifically sending those to a mobile page.

No, masking as Mozilla completely removes "Opera". "Identify as" doesn't.

Evidently, those other mobile browsers are not being singled out by the site and sent mobile content. Once again you show that you completely fail to understand the fundamentals of browser sniffing.

Well, you are reading it wrong. The stuff is about third party applications. It doesn't say anything about native apps, so we don't know how it will function and where.
As regards third party apps, there's nothing wrong with using a control designed for text, for, er, displaying text. That's the way it should be. Not everything should be selectable, and it isn't selectable in all OSes including "big" Windows.

Well, depending on how the text is set up, you should be able to just tap a phone number in any built-in app and it will bring up the create contact section.
I read from the article that in 3rd party apps you'll be able to c&p only text from text boxes. So you can't copy twitter tweet right from the timeline.
So apparently you'll be able to c&p whatever you want from text boxes,
Plus probably other displayed content from native apps.
So I think not a huge problem here.

Anywhere you can select text, like you can in the browser, should work. Text messages (unless they change it) you would have to go through the motions of choosing Forward from the longpress menu then select the text from the text box; a bit long-winded but doable.
If Microsoft can add the function I would imagine DEVs could also make use of it in their apps. I could be wrong.
Yeah, they're talking about how devs can modify their text fields to utilize the C&P feature when they update their apps.
Hope they actually do this...
Thanks for the post. Been waiting for this.
This, while exactly what I expected after hearing what Mr. Kindel had to say, is a downer. Now, I don't use cut'n'paste that often on phones, but when I do it's almost exclusively from non-edit controls.
I would also have expected a way to copy'n'paste images considering they see Office as such a big thing, and TBH I quite often paste product images into OneNote on the computer - which syncs perfectly to the phone. Of course you're unable to edit the photo note on the phone, but just being able to cut'n'paste them would be great still.
TBQH this looks more like a half-assed implementation done quickly to get an update out the door.
If copy-n-paste is available at API level, there is nothing to stop app developers to implement whatever they like to support the feature directly.
The limitation of text box is only a limitation when the devs are too lazy to re-complile their code.
Of course, if such feature is not available at API level, that will be a true limitation. Personally, without multi-tasking support for 3rd party apps, copy-n-paste usage will still be quite limited.
Without the tradditional stylus and resistive touch screen, try to accurately select the text you want to copy on a capacitive screen using your fingers is nothing but frustration. I tried a few times on my Android phone and never worked for me. A pen and paper is much easier to do than copy-n-paste.

I must say the virtual cursor on WP7 is pretty nicely implemented.
Android sucks compared to this and is a pain sometimes.
I guess you guys haven't tried 2.3 or any new samsung devices. Copy and paste, and the cursor is very finger friendly.
I have used cursor on Android 2.2. It is much better than 2.1 but still copy-n-paste largely dependent on app's implementation.
Capacity touch screens are inheritally inaccurate. Cursors make it less painful to use but can't eliminate that inaccuracy. You just got a tool to let you fine tune your selection. It still takes multiple tries to accomplish the job. And god forbid, if you want to select a paragrah out (multiple lines) of an email, that cursor won't be much help to you.

You already could select and hold and image to save it, then go to One Note and insert it.
I remember holding the.control button on WM devices and selecting/copying multiple items. Those were the days.
I found an interesting place that had developed an api for developers to use that allows them to access their voice UI system. I think this would be great if someone implemented it into an app of some sort, and with the increasing access for developers into the phone, I think a siri like app for wp7 could be very possible.

Siri is just voice recognition hooking into the wolframalpha.com database. So it is just a bigger database than what MS has. That can change and likely will.

Not trolling just stating that most of what they show Siri doing you can already do on a Windows Phone (in the US at least). Now in the future we will probably get features like appointments, more language support, etc
My main point is most of what they show off as "new and innovative" with Siri has been in windows phone 7 for a while. They just polished it. Give it time and the same features will be a part of Windows Phone 7 (in most languages)

Are you sure? I keep hearing this on here and other WP7 sites, so I decided to check against the Siri Commerical:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNsrl86inpo
Here's a list of things that Siri does in the video, and next to it I check whether WP7 Voice Commands can do it:
Read out and reply to an SMS message - YES
Play a music playlist - NO
Find local traffic report - NO
"Text my wife I'm gonna be 30 minutes late" - YES (though you have to use her specific name and dictate full SMS)
Weather report for SF and Napa Valley - YES (though she uses more natural language and WP7 you have to do two searches via Bing)
Weight conversion - NO
Set timer - NO
Reply to SMS - YES
So out of the 8 functions shown on the commercial, WP7 can do 4, though 2 of them aren't as easy / functional.

Lol, this is another funny fanboy thing I always hear; that Apple just take features from other phones, and "add polish" then try and sell them as innovative. It misses the entire point; PEOPLE BUY IPHONES AND IPADS BECAUSE OF THIS "POLISH". Mp3 players were around before the ipod, ditto touch-screen smartphones, ditto tablets, and now ditto voice commands. The polish (i.e. making it work well and easy to use) is what makes all the difference, and is exactly why Apple products sell so well.

I know how it works on WP7. After you say "weather blahblah" it responds with "searching weather blah blah" then it shows data in Bing. Now by the time my Windows Phone is repeating back to me what I said, you have this:
So let's not be delusional and think that our current implementation of voice commands is anywhere near what Siri offers. You can say ANYTHING you want to Siri and it will instantly read aloud a logical response in the same fashion a person would. It doesn't just bring up search results on a page, it's a conversation with your phone. I don't know about you but I have NOTHING of that sort on my two Windows Phones. If anyone needs a better understand of what Siri actually is, see here:
I'm afraid I have to agree with Aphasaic2002. Tellme can do half of what Siri has been shown to do. Just tried to go through that list & I've also checked Tellme's help. Siri also do text-to-speech for the result, which is the "cool" part. Tellme just display the result but doesn't stroke your ego. ;-)
However, it seems that Tellme has gotten better at foreign accent. I'm a Chinese living in Singapore & there're plenty of stuff that Bing don't do here. Point is, Tellme can catch my dictation 60% of the time now, compared to a year ago. So if someone took up that job offer to enhance Tellme, we can expect more from Tellme in the future.

Yes, Windows Phone does NOT do that, but I have never messed with Siri to that degree. I still say give it time and we will see the same functionality in windows phone. You have to remember Windows Phone 7 is still very much in the catch up phase of its life cycle. The features I always see demoed though were indeed on windows phone first (read text messages, text people via voice commands, check weather, etc)
I agree to a previous poster as well that is why Apple products do sell is because of that polish and shine. Personally, I think Apple is like the windows of 1985-1995 yes they are stealing the ideas of others, but they are creating them in a way that the average person can use, love, and let's not forget MARKETING! They are doing an awesome job at this, but to stay on topic Windows Phone 7 is still new and brought these innovative features to the table. So just give it time.

I agree that windows phone will most likely bring their voice support up to par with siri, but im also suggesting that with these API's, we can have that functionality right now.

I know how it works on WP7. After you say "weather blahblah" it responds with "searching weather blah blah" then it shows data in Bing. Now by the time my Windows Phone is repeating back to me what I said, you have this:
(YT Link removed to shortedn quote)
So let's not be delusional and think that our current implementation of voice commands is anywhere near what Siri offers. You can say ANYTHING you want to Siri and it will instantly read aloud a logical response in the same fashion a person would. It doesn't just bring up search results on a page, it's a conversation with your phone. I don't know about you but I have NOTHING of that sort on my two Windows Phones. If anyone needs a better understand of what Siri actually is, see here:

lolz, dude, I think you're overreacted. My post is only to clarify that weather search can be done in Bing search by using Voice Command, but NEVER saying that Siri is sux or Siri is a copy from MS TellMe.
Cheers~

Perhaps you should also make a compare list with WM 6.5 Voice Command with Siri, then you will see both works similar but with Siri it is more natural language approach. TellMe IMO is only a half-baked function of Voice Command. Would like MS to implement TellMe with more functions...

Agreed with you. The "Polish" and Marketing that Apple Inc have is somehow superb than their actual products. (sorry to make that statement because I always think that Apple's products are damn overpricing)
I've been a long time user of Windows Mobile (up to 6.5) until I changed to Windows Phone 7. I have also been using Windows Voice Command in Windows Mobile and was wondering why all the available functions were not ported to WP7. In WVC you can actually say an artist name and the media player will start playing songs in your phone from that artist. You can also ask the time which will be spoken back to you. I guess it takes some additional programming to add the same features to WP7.

So if someone took up that job offer to enhance Tellme, we can expect more from Tellme in the future.

i'm a chinese singaporean too, and guess what? i can ask my phone to text/call my friends too. thing is, it's able to capture and very accurately (90%) pull up the correct contact even when the subject's name is in hanyu pinyin (for you european folks, it's like our chinese names, but spelt out using the english alphabet).that's pretty amazing imo
at my recent university graduation, the organisers were using ms's text to speech, and they also accurately dictated out asian names, regardless of whether it's chinese, vietnamese, indonesian or malay names.
ms has the core of the voice command there already, which was already present in wm. they just need to polish it up, and hire apple's marketing team
Hey all,
Apologies if this has been asked before, I've scoured the search function but couldn't find it.
A feature I really miss from iOS and Android (I've had both) is where you look up a restaurant or something on your browser and it recognises the telephone number and underlines it.. so you just tap to call.
Right now I have to copy the number (or memorise it), go to the phone function and then create a new contact, paste the number and then call.
Is there an App or something that gives that functionality in WP (I have a HTC Titan with latest updates)?
Thanks,
K

I've just downloaded and set it up, and its useful (same as Chrome to phone on Android) but not what I meant. Essentially if I'm browsing the web on my phone, I want telephone numbers (on the web page) to automatically open up the phone program. All this is on the phone, not my PC.
Cheers
How are the numbers being formatted on the web page? IE9 I think looks for specific syntax.

Like (us of a numbers) 601-555-1234 just as you would dial them. The os pickes up a set of 7,10 or 11 numbers as phone numbers and dumps them to the dialer. Its the way it should have always been (nice)
I have Samsung Focus and running 7720 and I just tap the phone number on the web page and it take me to a screen asking if I want to call or store number.

Also in IE try changing from mobile to desktop version to see if it makes a difference.

is the quoted phone number showing up as a link for anyone? Its not clickAble for me on 8107 with mobile or desktop setting. Also tried international assist setting and it had no effect as suspected.
One feature I miss from previous OSes is the lack of ability to paste a phone number in the dialer. It is not always the case that we are able to successfully dial a number by tapping on it.

Does not work for me, neither do national (Swiss) or other European numbers. I usually have the opposite problem with iOS etc.. i.e. any sequence of numbers (including serial numbers) being interpreted as a telephone number

All but the last one were clickable for me (version 7720). I attached a screenshot of what I get with the first 6 numbers. Gives option to call, and edit number beforehand if necessary.

Same results for me too. HTC Titan ATT 7720.
Interesting that it is working for you guys. I tried changing my region settings all to USA and now it is working was previously set to Canada.
Weird... report that one to MS... i would think it would urk a lot of people. I live in the US.
Not clickable to me. im using the dft v3 rom on my 7 Pro. How i have managed to pick up numbers from the browser is to copy the number, create a new contact and then call to the number. Leaving the name field empty makes that contact appear frist for easy calling and deletion after the call.
So bottom line here would be to get the paste option to the dialer. That is a WAY better solution to call numbers from the browser, than have the browser identify all numbers as phone numbers.

All but the last one work for me also. Plus the web page has to be 100% loaded before they are clickable.
I Did some more testing. The only value that seems to matter is your region format setting (second from the top) inside the region+location settings. Make sure it is set to united states. Everything else can be whatever.
Anyone have the ear of someone on the windows phone tem and could pass this bug on? There's no obvious reason why the Canadian region should not have the same clickable phone links as we generally use the same formats as our friends to the south. I would chalk this up as an oversight, Canada usually gets forgotten.
Also tested Australian, and it is not working for the above numbers, but then the Aussies use a different number format iirc.

There are other dialers you can download that you can past phone numbers into. Give one of those a try.
