There is already a limit for signatures
And everybody is free to use it at their own discretion
Of course! there is... and I feel fine cause everybody is interested on fill it with Information about their device and current OS it helps to void unnecesarry posts asking whats your device?... are u unlocked?... wich Rom are you using? and some crap that wast space here...

Examples please !!!!!!!.....................which signatures are particularly offensive to you. ( obnoxious to the point that it is necessary to start a new thread about it ) or are we just mimicking the current climate over at ppcgeeks, where the animated sigs were really getting out of hand.
I vote for a contest for the most obnoxious signature. It has to be one that already exists, no making up sigs for the contest.
Just an observation - Not trying to be obnoxious. But one line of message and 10 lines of signature looks silly, regardless of how informative the sig may be.
When we're at the subject of huge animated gifs, there's one Mikey1022 who I think wins the competition hands down.
If you find this subject uncalled for, please feel free to delete this thread.

Now that is an excesssive signature.
Good shout on silly sizes of signature but my pet peeve is people quoting a MASSIVE first post on a thread and just adding "Really?" or "How does this work?" or something..
Am i included?
Most people with big sigs are contributers and already there is a limit
Just checked Arcsim's oh that would do my head in

but what the hell...they don't bother me....

Are animated gifs allowed in sig? I tried to load one and it wouldn't let me saying animated gifs were not allowed. But I have seen others with them. They are senior members. Same category as me.

Yup they are allowed, but they are not supposed to be uploaded attachment. If you us a image hosting service you can hotlink to the animated image and that's how everyone has one.

There are lots of people who use black and are huge fans. For the sake of good order would it be better to have its own forums even for each release to have their own forums?
That way instead of having a single thread with 750ish posts to read, it could be ordered nicely with a seperate thread for bug posts, feature requests, compliments, etc.

So much love in this thread...
I think it's a good idea. Actually all the production WM6 ROMs could have their own subforums. It would be a lot easier for everyone to find the information they need. Afterall, that's what subforums are for right?

A: yes it might be a good idea.
b: even if you lay out a trail of bananas the dumb monkey wont find the tree.
c: im amazed at how folks post issues about roms outside of their threads.
d: there is still going to be users posting romA issues in romB forum
e: CHICKEN IN A BUCKET....
The forum would be much less cluttered if:
a. Unnecessary, irrelevant, duplicated and erroneous posts could be deleted. Happens in other forums to good effect.
b. Posts could be moved to a more appropriate thread. Again, happens in other forums.
c. Flamers would have the balls to PM noobs directly rather than seeking brown-nose points by more than doubling the noob's effect on already burgeoning threads by posting their own replies in addition to the OP's.
d. Everyone use sigs of 1 line or less. This IS a PDA / Smartphone forum!
Apart from that, I think that a more 'user friendly' dynamic Wiki-type sub forum for things like JJ's WM6 would be a good thing, with separate threads for bug reports, congrats, moans and spin-off topics.
This is just retarded, I don't see Faria on the Wizard side with his own forum, and plus what about LVSW...both also quality chefs.

Did you even stop and look how much useful stuff is linked in peoples signatures..etc, and hey what a coincidence..its usually pda/smartphone related, plus it helps when ppl ask questions needing help, and they don't include their device info.

And yes, I do have thumbs..they are even opposable.
Yes! it by all means should.
And in order to post in it, one has to past a test that shows they have read the wiki.
By the way - I didn't vote
I see the concern, I just don't see any effective solution.

As of this post there are over 800 replies in the ProBlack3.0.1 post. 800. That's a lot of crap to churn through. Any more efficent form of organization is welcome imo.

That's my point exactly. All production ROMs should have their own subforums.
Also, side note... being a vBulletin admin, I know the capabilities of these forums. It wouldn't be too difficult to have the chef moderate his own subforum (or let them appoint their own moderator(s)).
I think it's funny that a very good suggestion is pissing so many people off. If you don't like the idea, just vote no... don't light your panties on fire in protest.
Keep in mind this is just a "Poll" to see what people think.
Long live JJ and Black! (and other hard working chefs and ROMs)

Yep, all very useful info that could be shrunk down to 1 line or... hmmm.. I dunno, maybe put into the user's profile, rather than repeated ad nauseum throughout every thread?
I'm not moaning about the info, just the way its put forward. I have a sig in another forum which lists 10 items in my HTPC setup... in 1 line. It is a (IMHO) genuine point that the one forum that I use most for my PDA, is the least readable one on my PDA.
But anyhoo, anough about item d on my list. Actually, having re-read the original post, I reckon if there was a more hands-on moderation process on the forum, i.e. points a and b, then we wouldn't need a sub forum at all.
Congrats on the thumbs, BTW.
i guess you beeter start my own subforum in here as my hermes rom is coming.... ...could not resist....
in a serious note.... sub forum or not it still wont make a difference how people post etc...plus i would not be fair to others chefs.

That's a good point. What this forum needs is strict moderation. Jees, even my last couple of posts would have been binned... followed by a 'friendly' warning from the mod... on other forums.
Don't think that we need to be overly concerned about the fairness to 'other' chefs, though. I'm sure they will step up to the oche.. plate, or whatever, and do their own stuff.

Hi, First let me say that I love this site and have learned massive amounts of stuff by reading and searching and the occasional question.
I have noticed lately that the number of people who have been members for 2 weeks and have 1700 posts is rapidly increasing. I also see a lot more posts like:
"yeah I think my bro had a progam like that once whre you had to move thing diffrnt LOL maybe LOL "
and
"yeah that would be so cool if someone could do that, too bad i don't know how to program LOL "
and surely a lot more posts getting jacked by flame-wars and outright trolls. I know that this is somewhat inevitable when a site like XDA offers so much. IT will get hugely popular and sooner or later the AOL'ers arrive and turn it to ****e. I really, really hope that doesn't happen to my favourite site...but it kind of feels like it's starting to go that way....is there anything to be done? Some kind of flag on people who get senior member status within 6 hours of joining? Some kind of age-verification system before allowing new members? Some kind of post-filtering algorithm that auto deletes any post with more than 5 smiley's and two LOL's in it??
Seriously though, maybe I'm being a jerk, but does anyone else notice this lately? Any thoughts?
Hello mlalahoi.
As you can see by the 'Join Date' on the top right of my post I have been here a while.
Yes this forum used to be different but it also used to be a lot smaller.
But word of unofficial WM upgrades, iPhone themes and free unlockers travels fast.
Combined with the growth in popularity of HTC it self and WM OS in general the number of users on this site has increased significantly in the past 1.5 years or so.
The administration of this site strives to keep it as free and accessible as it always was so instead of limiting user registration they increased the number of moderators to cope with the onslaught of junk posts that inevitably accompanies the increase in user base.
But we still can't catch every post, specially in general forums where there can be as many as 3 pages of new threads per day.
This is where you and other users who care about this site come in. In the top right corner of every post there is a '!' button.
You can use it to report posts that are offensive, wrong or plain SPAM. The moderators will get a notification with a link to the post and will take appropriate action.
Lets all keep the forum clean together!
thats a good point to be raised. one has to flip so many pages just to view some serious and productive comments.

Probably (a) you're either using a download manager (don't) or using 'save as' (don't) or (b) you've posted this question in the wrong thread by the way (i.e. it should have its own thread I think).
Disable any download managers. Free Download Manager is one that I use and makes this mistake on attachments if I let it.
Sorry for the semi-sarcasm - wasn't a genuine flame mate. Enjoy the attachments, very important part of the site.

Im not as old as others on this website but XDA has inspired me to try C+ programming everything...
I can agree that it is probibly the young population that causing the flood... but not all of us are alike!
Couldn't agree more with this thread. I am among those who might soon attract derision from some of you true 'senior' members. I recently joined and I am happy to say that all but 4 of my posts have been helping other members. Of the 4, 2 were questions and 2 were comments. But I would hardly say I am even close to being senior in my knowledge, yet here I am getting awfully close on post count alone.
But since I have joined and taken an active interest in the titan pages where a lot of work is going on at the moment, I have seen at least 10 ppl become senior members by asking dumb questions and making completely erroneous advice that in some cases could almost brick a device - all in name of their beloved post count.
For an interested novice (but definitely not a noob) like myself I would welcome a ranking system whereby you could see the seniority of a poster not by their post count but by their reputation for actually helping others or doing useful development.
At ppcgeeks they have a system whereby you can vote for ('rep') a post or poster to indicate if it was useful or just drivel. This way you have a more democratic system than just relying on the poor overworked moderators to do the filtering. These 'rep' votes increase your reputation as a useful poster.
It's very unlikely this system could be abused because you can't 'rep' yourself. This would really weed out the trolls.

This seems like a great idea! I wonder if this forum's software has this feature available . . . ?
Edit: I just checked out the ppcgeeks forums - another nice feature is Multiquote - really slick way to respond to 2 or more posts at once, rather than having to cut and paste like here.

Indeed, its a nice rundown of info which is why I decided to mirror it here. This fartcape guy is just been a ahole, probably because his only source of social interaction is when he trolls a post and waits for a reaction, he needs to get laid and some friends.
Windscape, almost every thread in this forum has been ruined or derailed by your arguments and insults. You rarely have anything of any value to add, your arguments are often slavishly pro-Microsoft to the point that they become nonsensical and you seem to be incapable of responding to anyone with any respect.
If you can't control your temper or avoid trolling the forum then I suggest we'd all be better off (you included) if you just kept your opinions to yourself and refrained from posting. There's no point to this forum if every thread is going to be filled with nonsense posts from you.
Actually, copying and pasting an entire article is illegal as it's copyright infringement. You're permitted to quote sections as that's considered fair use. Having it reproduced here removes their ability to make money off of the ads to keep their site open.
Angry much? If you were the originator of the content then it's fine to do copy and paste it. But it's inappropriate to do that for someone else's work.

I put the author of article at beginning of work so its not as if its trying to claim it or anything its simply a mirror with link to source.
And whether you think its inappropriate or not is your problem not mine. I simply dont care.
Also it should be fair to mention when I wrote my post, he had invalid BBcode, wrong links, and didn't link the source at all.
But I'll leave this one alone, even I still think the article isn't very up to date.

There may have been a small window of when I edited a part where there was a broken bbcode but that is irrelevant to the comments you made. There wasn't any broken links and the source was linked to from the beginning, it was the first bit a pasted, so you are talking out of your rusty sheriffs badge

And the "do not care" remark had nothing to do with me caring if you cared or not, I mean I dont care about whether its "appropriate" or not.
The post has been edited now anyway because of little girls crying so pointless discussion.
At present XDA has no rules governing signatures except where the are offensive but I personally feel some signatures are just far too long/tall. I have a 1600 x 900 resolution monitor and have just seen a post where the post was only two lines but the signature then took up nearly all of the rest of the monitors vertical space. I know I can hide signatures when I am viewing the forum but I'd rather not since some contain useful links such as to other roms or kernels I may want to try.
Would some mild restrictions be asking to much?

We already have restrictions of 1000 characters, of which 500 can be nonBB chars. If you see a specific one that you would like to report, feel free to click on the little triangle in the upper right hand corner of the post and a mod will look into it. Also, there are other rules such as promoting other sites, or selling stuff are not allowed.
If I can jump in here for a second, there is an excellent option regarding signatures here on the Forum.
Use the Unofficial XDA Toolbar. It's a browser plugin that allows you to set all images in posts to a maximum size, toggle all signatures on or off, and jump back to the top of a page. Please throw a 'thanks' to FSM 'Archer' when you see him around, as this is his work.
The toolbar also allows you to use a toggle setting, to hide individual obscene/oversized signatures on a user-by-user basis, so you don't have to hide them all - just the annoying ones.
TBH this has improved my XDA experience 1000-fold. Just the 'jump to top' button alone is worth having. If you use XDA a lot and your browser doesn't support it, it's worth a browser upgrade. Believe me
Hope this helps you out!
If you see a huuuge sig then pm a mod and we will consider asking the person to resize it.
Sent From My Fingers To Your Face.....
Yeah I've already reported the one in question.
I'm glad someone brought this up because I have seen some ridiculous signatures myself.

I get what you mean, but as a users signature is limited to 1000 characters.
HOWEVER if they have a really big image, then i agree with you, as that is annoying having to scroll down so much just to see the next post. So i think they should be restricted to a certain image size in there sig.
So i totally agree with you
Sometimes you see these humongous signatures which fills up your screen and makes you have to scroll down to read the next post. This is not only annoying, but also wastes your bandwidth sometimes as they have multiple number of images.I made this thread to provide an easy way for all of you to report them.
I hope this thread will gain official recognition by xda and will help reduce the number of humongous sigs that we see nowadays
P.S.Thread was a.cid's idea,I just made it.

I think it would probably be more appropriate to click on the report button when encountering such a signature. You could set examples by posting your sig code here: Share Your Sig Code Please
You could also encourage people to use [floatleft] [/floatleft] and [floatright] [/floatright] in their sigs to compress them a bit by better utilizing the width of the screen instead of 'stacking' signature elements.

There's no reason this thread wouldn't be allowed to be here, right?
Obviously the only downside would be incase a mentioned user notices it and doesn't like it, but it's the same with the spam users thread.
Just my 2 cents xD
On-topic - I generally won't notice many with huge sigs due to mainly using the app, but I'll try my best to remember this thread when relevant

I know what you mean though, less people using the website now and more using the app.
While I like the sentiments behind this thread, perhaps rather than a 'name and shame' style list (at this stage), just reporting those users with massive, oversized, ridiculous signatures would be best :highfive:
That way we can action them quickly and directly :good:
