TOM TOM doesn't work anymore - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi all,
from few days ago my TOM TOM on my trinity is stopped to work.
I'm using ROM: 3.51 Claros and 1.46.00.11 as Radio.
It is very strange because suddenly it stops to work. Using other GPS software, like win fast navigator or GPSTest, it can find some satellites for a bit but without fixing them.
What should be the problem?
There is my friend having the same configuration (radio and rom) ant it works properly.
I would like to install the original rom (WM5) or install the latest radio (1.56...), what is your suggestion?
Regards
Leandro

I have a Loox PDA and have had the same sort of problem, either taking a long time and getting no fix despite seeing lots of satellites, or getting a fix from just a few satellites but with a positional error of about 300 metres. In each case the problem appears to be a corruption of the satellite data in the GPS "chip"/memory. In the case of my device there is a rear cover switch which is a bit unreliable, but I have also had a loose battery. Both of these cause corruption in the GPS chip/memory. Taking the battery out and reseting the device cures it every time. I wonder if you have a similar problem? It doesn't just affect TomTom but any software you have running. Restarting in this way can eliminate that as a cause.

Hi fingerstoo and tnx very much for the reply.
The problem come out also running other GPS software...maybe is a GPS issue.
I tried to take off the battery for 8 hours and I fixed the problem but only for 1 time. After the rebooting, the gps fixing issus came out again.
Currently I installed a cooked rom, I would like to install the original one (WM5) and test again. What's your feeling?

Hi ordnael, I think it is definitely worth going back to WM5, even if only to try to solve the problem. I suggest that after you go back and with your device in "factory state" i.e. no additional software installed at all, re-install TomTom afresh from card/file or CDROM. Do not use backup software to restore TomTom. This should eliminate the possibility of hardware/software settings, or installed software interferring with the GPS.
If it works, then you do not have a hardware problem. If it doesn't work, then you obviously do have a hardware problem.
If it works, then gradually re-install all your other software, starting with any other GPS software first and see if it interferes or stops TomTom working.
Are you using TT6 or TT7? Oh, and I don't think the radio function should have anything to do with the GPS, however, I don't have your device so I may be wrong......

Tnx very much for your reply.
I would like to update you about the latest changes!
(Just to clarify that the problem raises also during execution of other GPS software, so this is not a TOM TOM issue!)
Anyway, I removed the battery for 8 hours (to reset the GPS) and then the TOM TOM and "GPSTest" software worked fine. 10 sec to fix the satellite (excellent). But after 4/5 hours, I tried to run the GPS Software and the problem come back again , so I starting to think that GPS works fine but only for a bit! Should be overheat problem or client software problem... what you think?

You failed to say whether you reverted to the old operating system,WM5 or "factory state" with no other programs installed! If you did not do this then it could still be "other" software or settings causing GPS to fail after a time. For example, some other program could be gradually filling up memory and causing the GPS data to be corrupted or lost, or some interaction between running programs or processes.
If your results ARE with a nearly empty/reverted operating system device as I described previously, then it does look to me that you do have a hardware problem. As you say, it may be an overheating issue or an internal circuit intermittent fault that gets worse with time, either memory, GPS chip(s) or circuit board connections inside.
But I stress, you must try with a totally clean and reverted device to be absolutely certain.

Chaps/Ladies (do we have any?!),
I've been using TT5 for a couple of weeks now, and have a strange problem! Every now and then, randomly, TT5 will just exit whilst navigating. I drove 170 miles yesterday and it closed itself four times, the phone was off on three of the four occasions, as was wifi and BT.
I've also had it freeze once or twice. The display just stops updating, though I can still tap the screen and exit cleanly. This used to happen more frequently with TT3.
I've only run TT5 on the new 1.40 ROM.
Anyone else suffering?
TIA
Dan
I have the same problem. Also running 1.40, tomtom sometimes just exists

Argh! Another quirk. I think I'm gonna sell my XDA2s on Ebay, and buy a map, a diary, and a Nokia 1110.
I use TT5 daily & have never had a problem with it exiting. The display occasionally freezes, butI think I can put this down to when the traffic info is being updated because it only happens occasionally & it unfreezes after about 30 seconds or so

Are you on the same ROM as us, 1.40? I don't use TomTom Traffic, so that can't be related to my problem.
Thanks for replying

I have a question and it's off topic (sorry guys) Can you use TomTom 5 for just driving directions? Do you need to have the GPS unit?

My experience is that TomTom 5 will not start calculating a route without a valid GPS device attached - I'm just going to verify that though

Well that shows how much I know about TomTom 5 . It is definitely possible to generate driving instructions without a GPS device attached 8) .
Go into the "Advanced Planning" option and simply pick your start and end points. You will then have a route that you can display as text, images etc, or even "demo" the route i.e. simulate it at speeds from 10% to 500% of "real time"

I had same problem. Try to switch off showing a POI. I switch it off and TT5 works fine.

Ah right Which POI? Or just all POI's?
Thanks
Dan
I switch off all POI.
Thank you.
Thanks Weasel. I'll go ahead and load TomTom5 before my GPS arrives.
I have an XDA IIs with TT3, after i first installed it noticed it would crash randomly, which became really really annoying. After messing around with settings and 3rd-party software, i got nowhere. So I removed the **** O2 software that comes with the IIs, low and behold no more crashing.
Is this also the case for TT5, I would like to know before upgrading?
Don't really want to have to turn off the POI's to make it work.
This is all pretty interesting. I'm running a 1.40 O2 ROM and TomTom is not-as-stable-as-it-could-be. I'm going to do some more qualitative analysis to try and work out which of the crappy O2 software is the culprit - or if it's TomTom itself.
We've got quite a few XDAIIs here and both of the ones with TomTom are flakey. More details to follow...
[edit] Should have said - this is TomTom Navigator 5, with both bluetooth and wired GPS receivers.
AFAIK, the O2 Active software produces a memory leak. There are suggestions that TTN5 also produces a memory leak on 640x480 VGA devices. Perhaps the two are interacting? (Yes I know the XDA2s isn't VGA). Try monitoring available RAM while TTN5 is running. If it constantly reduces it will reach a point where the s/w crashes.
Where are we?
@ all:
Anyone know a solution to this problem? Apparently we need to use the POI.dat file from earlier installations, i.e. 4 or 3 and it will only crash 1% of the time. Until there is a patch for this we will have to settle for this solution it seems.
BTW, does anyone happen to have the POI.dat file for the Benelux map, version 3 or 4? I seem to have "misplaced" my cd with the map on it, anyone can help a brutha out? PM me?
Cheers in advance!
I've switched off POI ( that's NP for dutch users ) so it's stable now.
Any word on the arrival of a patch for this problem?

Tomtom s..l..o..w..! (Official Dopod ROM)

Has anyone else had any issues with Tomtom Navigator 6 since upgrading to WM6 (offical SEA ROM)?
Under my old buggy WM5 ROM, it was perfect. As part of the WM6 upgrade I reinstalled it, and not it is unusably slow. It takes about 5 seconds between screen refreshes etc... you miss your turns by the time they are announced.
Does anyone know the cause or fixes? I've done a forum search and the problem has been reported on a couple of threads, but no real solution.
Some initial questions:
Under WM6, are people using the GPS manager in system settings? Or just pointing TT6 at the COM port directly? (What should the baud rate be set to?)
Is tngpseng.exe still required (never been entirely sure what this does exactly)
Does running it from the storage card (SanDisk 4GB) cause any performance hit? (I'm hoping not as my device memory is full)
The other chance I made is upgrading to the latest Australian maps. (Sinsis v675?) Are these known to be worse performance wise?
Does anyone else have Hermes, WM6 (official), TTN6, latest Australia maps working? can you post your settings?
Any help greatly appreciated!

Not related to WM6 but have you checked the number of Points of Interest that TT6 is trying to display. I use TT6 and have noticed no problems with WM6 so far - but regardless of ROM I found that unless I turned off the POIs that TT6 slowed right down and kept freezing.

Thanks Tony. I've turned them all off except the speed/red-light cameras and it does seem to have helped. (I won't know 100% until I take it out in the car, but it seems much faster at home on my balcony!)
The strange thing is I many POIs enabled on the previous install under WM6/older maps. Maybe the newer map is larger or something.
Does anyone know if custom POIs are more performance intensive than the build in ones?
I've had some kind of issue with TomTom since upgrading from Black Dymond (first to Magik and now to Satin). On the first upgrade I had to reregister my unit with my account to get access to my plus content (device ID change).
Now, I intermittently get a warning that it cannot find some file. I can't replicate it reliably and haven't had a chance to note the missing file. I suspect it has something with how TomTom is accessing info on the card.
My problem only presents itself when shutting down, so it's not a real issue for me. If it was, like yours is, I would first try increasing your caches. If that doesn't work, try going into the TomTom manager console when synced with the computer and remove everything (program, maps, voices, etc.) from your device/card and then reinstall it (make sure you have your disk or a backup, plus your registration code). If it has anything to do with lost file links, this should solve it theoretically.
I suspect your issues are due to either caching or lost links in TomTom itself, or both.
Tomtom has some problems with some wm6 roms not all.
My experience:
It worked fine with black dymond. No slowdown. No Problem.
It was painfully slow with black majik
It was OK with VP3g's v2.0 but after I added HTC home plug it slowed down considerably
Currently I am running latest Black Satin and TomTom runs just fine, stable, superfast, no freezes. This time I am going to stay away from HTC home plug.
You do not have shut down all of the 'nice to haves' (POI's) in such unnecessary and draconian fashion, quote "have you checked the number of Points of Interest that TT6 is trying to display".
Like Quist, I beleive the build of the ROM is much more at issue.
From my observations - Dopod / Black Satin / Sleuth's and Black Dymond are not at a problem.
I have noted significant refresh delays when using Schaps and Black Majik.
Good luck.
I've never seen TomTom run as fast as it does on my phone with vp3G's 3.0 WM6 rom.
I'm running TomTom version 6.100 (8330)
Im using Schaps 3.57a with TT6. So fast. Cold boot around 10s to 20s. Thanks

Tomtom Navigator 6 freezes

Hi!
In my Artemis is annoying problem. Navigator 6.03 stops opening, when "the hands" are on the display. This happens about three to four times a week.
I have to make a soft reset after that. (I use TomTom daily.)
The second symptom, which probably comes from above, is that I can not make a phone call. All things seem to be OK, but I can not receive or make a phone call. (I give pin -code and the phone shows good fieldstrength.)
I have Vanilla 1.0 in my phone.
Please, help me. This is the only problem, what I have with Vanilla 1.0
"PS. I think I found the reason. See below!"
I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago (I'm using vanilla 2.01), but it was not once a day, but everytime I tried to use it.
I solved it taking the TomTom files from a backup that I had from my microSD, and overwriting the ones that I had at that moment.
Since then no problems whatsoever.
Hope it helps.

Did you make a backup copy of all in microSD, formatted the microSD and put all back?
I just copied the files from the microSD backup that had to do with TomTom (f.e. Program Files/Navigator), and put them into my microSD overwriting the ones that I had at that moment.
It seems that some file was corrupted, and making this solved the problem.

Hi,
there is an official update specifically for the Artemis / P3300. If I'm right it is version 6.2. The freeze of earlier versions is a known issue. Get yourself an account on mytomtom.com and look for updates. You will find version 6.2 there.

The phone was shut down during the night. I opened it and started TomTom. All went OK. I shut TomTom and wrote sms -message. The writing was quite sticky. Artemis did not send the message, because it was jammed.
I took away all POIs and loaded the map again.
I hope this solved the problem.

You dont need to delete POIs. Just disable them from displaying when youre running Tomtom.
Change Preferernces > Enable/Disable POIs
then untick everything.
TomTom used to crash on a regular basis on my Artemis because I had it overclocked to 286MHz and when it was plugged in to the car charger the battery was getting very hot so it would freeze then reset after 5 minutes or so. Very annoying but I now have to restore the original clock speed each time I use TomTom, this may well be the issue you're having?
Change your SD... I had freezing problem with SD and microSD on both 9100 and P3300. After using new hight quality cards, no more problem.
Probly I found the reason
I think I found the reason for my problem, when TomTom freezed, when loading it.
I had enAlarmPPC v.3.3.1 -program, which caused that. I removed the program, and I have had that problem any more.
Now every time, when I change the time, I got an error message: "Cannot execute\Storage card\Program files\enAlarmPPC3.3.1\enAlarmPPC.exe"
I can not get rid of that message. I have souhgt it in the registry, but there are no mention of that.
Does anybody know this problem?
PS. I got a little program, which took away that error message. I could find it here: http://www.maik-wiege.de/en/FAQ/enalarmppc/uninstall.html
I've had just the same problem with Tomtom and had to keep restarting my PDA to get Tomtom working again.
Then I realised that whenever it ist stuck with the "hands" in the bottom corner but won't display tomtom screen, there is a "notification" waiting to be displayed.
Once you've tapped on the "Notification" text at the bottom left of the screen to clear all the notifications, then Tomtom will display itself again - without rebooting the PDA....

Intermittent GPS Problem

Hi there.
I've searched for this problem and hadn't found much information, maybe some of you had this problem.
The problem is: The GPS software don't receive signal from the GPS receiver, sometimes 1 (to a max of 3 bars) on the satelitte options of the GPS software go up, but no fix. Other times with no apparent reason it works correctly until it goes out again (from some minutes to some days).
I've tried with this softwares, and the same results:
Tom Tom navigator 7
Garmin XT
Ndrive (don't know the version)
and
NoniGPSPlot (it's not a navitation software but should work to test)
I've tried several ROMs, same results.
I've tried to clean the internal antenna contacts and bend them in a way to make a best contact.
Any guess?
Best Regards.
Have you tried updating the quickgps to get a better fix?
Also where are you running the gps from? (home, outside etc.)
Hi, thanks for your reply.
I've tried that, but I think it wouldn't make wonders anyway. One of the times I was able to put it working, was after updating QuickGPS, but now I see it was a coincidence.
I make most of the tries at a balcony I have in my apartment where I can see about 70% of the sky (it already worked there before).
Any more guesses?
Best Regards.

Depending on the location, i have realised you have to move around to get a good fix.
If you move around, say around 2 square meter in you balcony you wont be able to get a precise fix as the satellite will think your are still in the same place. Try walking around with it on the road and see if you get any improvements.
if you still have no luck and since you have tried various roms i would suggest you send it for repair?
I thought that it would be better to be still to get a better fix... It seems I'm wrong.
I'm now trying the original ROM from HTC.
BTW, "as the satellite will think your are still in the same place", I thought the GPS system only receives information from the satellites, am I wrong?
Best Regards.
Sorry i meant the gps reciever
Finally I solved the problem.
Sent my Artemis to service
The main board was replaced, now it works as a charm.
