Is there any way to speed things up? Takes a couple of minutes or so in my car. Quick gps doesn't seem to help. I've only had the MDAC3 since june. Does it need a hard reset?

Try without quick GPS and see what it is like. I have a TomTom GPS Bluetooth dongle and that sometimes takes about 10 minutes to get a fix.

Is it quicker when not in the car?
Unlikley to be anything to do with needing a hard reset. Most likely not getting a good signal where it is mounted.
Try re-positioning it to a more open position in the car.

My Garmin takes approx. 1 minute from a cold start but that is using an external aerial.
My Orbit takes less than 30 seconds outside the car but a few seconds longer inside the car (mounted about 15cm from the heated screen)
Get a lock before you start moving.
Stationary with good sky visibility and updated quick GPS should only be about 30 seconds, a minute if you've moved considerably from the last location GPS was used.
Alter your routine.
Get in car, place artemis in cradle, turn on, start Tomtom.
THEN get comfy, seatbelt, CD selection etc, by the time your starting the car up, Tomtom should be locked.
Also make sure software is up to date, for Tomtom thats version 6.03, I don't know about Garmin, igo etc
Thanks for the replies.
I was in a friends car recently, she was using her own pda. I can't remember what is was, not an xda product I don't think, and it had a flap lifted to allow the built in gps receiver to work. Not only did she get a fix in about 30 seconds, but she got it on the move. Her software was not one of the big names and I can't remember what it's called. I had my MDAC3 on me and while in the car I loaded tomtom. On the way to our destination it got a fix after a few minutes. On the way back, couldn't get a fix for the whole journey.
Anyway, just now I stood outside my house for about 3 or 4 minutes and tomtom wasn't finding a signal. I went inside, downloaded the latest quick gps, went outside and it got a fix in a minute and 3/4. Unloaded tomtom and reloaded it and it then got a fix within a few seconds. I suspect in an hour or so it'll take around 2 minutes again. I guess quick gps does work after all. So it looks like if I load tomtom from cold, it's always gonna take around 2 minutes. Not terrible, but just wanted it quicker.
One other thing, someone mentioned the dopod rom on another forum, and I quote:
"Has anyone else noticed that the MDACIII takes an outrageously long time to get a first fix?
Well here's something interesting... I reflashed the missus' MDACIII using the latest Dopod ROM (which is great anyway), after using imei-check's SIM / CID unlocker. After doing so, in testing so far, it gets it's first fix a LOT faster!
I'll test more over the next few days, but this could suggest a problem in the T-Mo ROM?"
Here's the thread. I posted in it at the end but noone responded yet.
http://www.modaco.com/MDACIII-long-time-fix-t251248.html
I wonder if this dopod rom makes a difference?
Different quality
I have had a HTC P3300 with TomTom Navigator 6.030.0 for 8 month and it would take between 8-30 sek. to get a signal (newer more) nomather if it was outside, in a car, or even in most houses.
I Just bought a new P3300 a few days ago.. and i had to get it switched 3 times becouse the first 2 was so terrible slow to get a signal??? - now i finally have a good one again but i´m thinking that maybe the quality from HTC is very different??
* by the way, my Quick GPS is allways updatet because it does so automaticly when i sync.
Hi there,
I recently bought my HTC P3300 few weeks ago. Considering this is my first pda with gps, i am disappointed that others are enjoying quick gps fix.
My unit takes about 2.5 to 5 mins to get a fix from cold start. A warm start within 4 hrs yields a fix within 30 secs. It gets very annoying especially when i am trying to demonstrate the gps feature to my friends..and they have to wait about 4-5 mins to see the dam thing work.
I download QuickGPS data twice a day and even tried deleting the 2 keys files it downloads and it makes no difference!!.
When i do get a fix, i usually get connected to min 5 sats and on avg get about 6 or 7 sats. So i think that proves my unit has clear line of sight without much obstructions/interferences.
In visualgps, within 30 secs it sees 3 sats. most of the time, but its the fix it that take ages.
EDIT: When ones shakes the P3300 vigorously, do you guys hear some loose piece inside the casing moving about making noise?
Should i return my device back ( although i am out of 7 days exchange period)? Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike
Btw, I use Tomtom 6.03 with B&B V3.7 cooked rom.

Hmm, so it seems I may have a bit of a duff one? I'm not sure I can get mine switched over now, it was an upgrade with T Mobile and that was weeks ago.
How do you configure the artemis to do automatic quickgps updates when synching? I was watching the quickgps screen when I connected it to my pc and nothing happened until I manually clicked download. Also, when it's connected to my pc, does quickgps download from my cable internet connection or does it use my gprs service?

Excellent! I hadn't even noticed the menu/options before you mentioned it. I then connected it to my pc and was expecting to see the narrow download box showing the download process as it normally does in %. But then I looked again and noticed it had already updated with the new file as soon as it was connected. Thanks MicTh.
Quick GPS lost after B&B v4 update (Artemis)?
My quick GPS seems to have disappeared since I uploaded the otherwise brilliant B&B ROM upgrade. Does anyone have a solution for this? I'm reluctant to flash back to O2's own ROM but is it possible to update selectively from the O2 ROM? Or can I download Quick GPS from somewhere?
QuickGPS is built-in in tom's roms. in B&B4, you can find it in ->start/programs/connections
Thanks very much!

What is the fix for?
What problem is this patch supposed to address? Slow/intermittent GPS lock, Lag, or some other problem?
As far as I can see it is simply an animated GIF set to display during boot and changing some registry entries relating to the GPS intermediate driver and increasing the file system cache.

yes tom,
the reason i added the gps is that the stupid microsoft visual studio wont allow to build cab files with out a file in it.
it indeed adjust a couple of registry settings but if you do it in the way it is writen above you get a gps fix,
It is for the
lag problem, getting no gps signal in any way.
i even get gps in house now

if yours works out of the box, don't patch it.
mine is Tmo TP2 and get almost instant sat lock, so I am not going to patch mine for now.
That's the radio version I have. What does the cab file do? Does it automatically change the registry settings for the GPS Intermediate driver? If so, I have made those changes and I still get GPS lag.
gps lag
i work at a auto repair shop and on occasion i get the oppurtunity to drive a customers car that has a dedicated gps. what i have noticed is that the lag time with those dedicated units and my old touch diamond and touch pro is that the lag time is about the same. i have not tested it with my current phone (tp2)just yet but it seems about the same maybe a little faster. imho i think it has something to do with the lag time with the gps signal having to travel so far. if we think about it, the signal has to travel out into space and then back down. things no matter how fast are not instantaneous.
btw i love this phone. i just typed all this on my tp2! great keyboard.
just my two cents
GPS is another reason I miss my HTC Dream. It was fast and worked indoors. SO far, I see no improvement with this radio and .cab. Of course, I already had an alleged GPS fix with a different radio (3.44.25.27 +A-GPS hot fix). I will test outside now. So far nothing indoors. update: well... it does seem to pick up faster outside now. good fix! not great but a bit better than before. good find!
This Fix works great in my TP2...
Question: Installed but my free program down 6MB..? BTW I'm using Miri V 1.1 Manila 2.5
Edit: My Garmin 5.00.20w works better than my TyTNII... It locks inside my house within 5 second.. More amazing in my bed room which I never get any GPS signal... Antonius .. Genius...

Hey guys. I know there are dozens of threads here on XDA about GPS problems. Well, I have sifted through many for weeks now, I have tried and tried tweaks, hacks, whatever and I am having no luck. I used to have my GPS working with bing, google maps, whatever. I installed TomTom and never got it to locate a GPS signal, since then I have not been able to get any GPS working that I can recall.
I am not sure if I have replaced or deleted some file during all these registry hacks and tweaks, so I am at a loss. I just want to get my GPS working. I am no noob, so please no rude remarks. I just need some help. I cannot get this thing licked for the life of me. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I am using an Energy Leo ROM with Sense 2.5 if that helps or matters to anyone.
Please, people, somebody help me get this GPS working again. THANKS SO MUCH IN ADVANCE.
EDIT: I fixed it, if ur curious check out post #7

Since you're "no noob" I assume you've already hard-reset your phone...?? And/or tried the Task 29? And then re-flashed to a stock rom?
If you've done all of those things (surely you have if you've been troubleshooting for weeks) and GPS still doesn't work then it seems like you must have a hardware problem.
Yeah, thanks

Alright, figured I would get some type of remark anyways, but it's cool. I have done a hard reset which I was trying to avoid, but I have not reflashed to a stock ROM and back again. Once again, I was trying to avoid all of that, but if there isn't any other options, it seems like that's what I am going to have to do. It's just since I flashed to the energy ROM, my GPS did work, it just stopped working suddenly. Thought there could be some connection(s) settings that got changed or possibly a file lost or changed.
I am willing to reflash the phone, by all means, but I thought I would check with my fellow hacking badasses to see if anyone could come up with an actual idea instead of telling me to change the phone BACK to it's original out of the box state, but if not whatever, guess I might have to bite the bullet.
If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. I'm gonna hold tight on reflashing the phone for a few days to see if anyone has any other ideas.
what version of TomTom are you using?
i found with TT7 it will not show how many sats you have. and its a bit of a faf getting it to work, but i do have it working like this
in the gps settings of the phone set theprograme port to com 4and the hardware port to com5 and the baud to 4800
in TT and go to gps settings under preferences
change the GPS device to other GPS set the com to com 5 or 4 (try both)
go outside in a field etc, and wait 10 mins, you will see the latitude etc change, wal around and it will keep changing, but there will be no blue bars to tell you your signal strenght etc

It's easier to help you if you say what you've tried -- a little more detail than you're giving. Like, after you hard-reset did you reflash the Enrgy rom and try the GPS before adding Tom-Tom? If you did a hard reset, returning the phone to the basic Energy rom (without Tom-Tom) and GPS still doesn't work then Tom-Tom isn't the problem. But who knows... good luck.

In my version of TomTom (ttn7.916.9189_qvga_blue) I find my satellites to be working no problem as per the display of locks on the navigation screen. No tinkering required.
As for the GPS issues, I would guess try another radio version. When you flash a stock ROM back on, it usually replaces the radio. In Southern California I find the .77 RADIO to be excellent with GPS.
Just update Quick GPS, try the .77 radio, stand out on the street for like 2 minutes so it can get a quick lock. With .77 GPS works in my house where it never did before.
I too had a helluva time getting this GPS working tits on the Touch Pro 2 when I first got it, now it's awesome!!
Thanks I will try

I have reflashed my ROM more than once since all of this began in order to fix this problem with no avail, but I cannot say that the radio every changed since I was reflashing with an Energy ROM each time, so I will try what your saying about flashing the radio with some different ones. I am not sure what my stock radio was, so I will just have to experiment, but I will get back to you after I give this a try and let you know what happened if anything.
Got it Working Now
So I tried flashing a new radio. I also found another setting, though in the settings panel that I believe fixed this. It is as follows:
Settings\Connections\Advanced Network
When you're in this area, check the GPRS tab at the bottom. It has two options to set your GPRS to, one is PAP the other is CHAP. Mine was set to CHAP, so I changed it to PAP and VOILA!! Went outside, used Quick GPS, used the HTC GPS Tool, and it found satellites. Then I opened up google maps, bing, TomTom, and they all worked perfectly. So, if anyone else is having a similar problem, then give this a whirl. Make sure you check out different radios as well. I have now and my signal is strong inside and outside with my phone calls, internet, and GPS.
Thanks everyone for the help

Must be your local servers. I was using CHAP without GPS problems. The only difference is that CHAP uses secure authentication with the servers. I'm in LA.
BTW, are you using the "Quick GPS" application to download satellite positions? It really speeds up signal acquisition.
Hi all,
I have some sort of problem with the GPS. Last Saturday it suddenly wouldn't get a fix at all. I tried taking the battery out and rebooting and still no joy. Then suddenly on Monday it started working again. I was on a flight on Wednesday and it worked on the flight too. About 2 hours later, I was on a train and again, no joy but put it down to maybe some strange coating on the glass. However, I tried again yesterday while out in my car and not a dickybird.
It sounds like a loose connection in the phone or something like this. Does anyone have any photos of where the GPS unit is or how to dis-assemble it to check the firmness of the connection ? Or is there any program that I can load on my TP2 to check what the GPS is actually doing ?

Having the same sort of issue with GPS on WM6.5... HTC are (well should be) working on but they have so far sent a gps test cab in the last month... which was useless... like you it will work great one minute then 'acquiring satellites' for ages... unless you have dropped and damaged radio would put the tools away for the moment as looks like software related (how WM6.5 manages GPS lock) that is the problem
I've never had a problem before and i've used it both at home and abroad. I'd use it a couple of times every week.

Thought the GPS hotfix on HTC site was for 6.1... so it works on 6.5 as well?...was going to flash the lastest europe 6.5 (with sense 2.5) it has a later radio but have read messaging is slow for some people, as waiting for HTC to fix on Telstra 6.5 is painful

When you say you can't get a lock, is this in just one particular app, or have you tried multiple GPS-enabled apps? You may need to determine if the device actually isn't seeing any sats, or if your app just isn't playing nice with the com port anymore.
THIS LINK is for Chartcross' GPS Test (free), it can at least tell you if your hardware is getting a lock independent of any nav apps.
Excellent - exactly what I was looking for. I'll test the Chartcross software on the way home tonight.

OK, I've got a Yellow circle and it says "GPS Starting up" so obviously doesn't even start to pull down data
Any ideas on what I can do ? Could there be a loose connection somewhere inside the phone ?

Did you see it scan through the com ports when it started up? The next thing I would check is the settings (settings-all settings-system-external GPS) and see what it says on the "programs" and "access" tabs
The GPS hardware is a chip that's soldered to the motherboard, so I doubt that's come "loose"...the only other hardware connection that comes into play is the one to whatever antenna the GPS utilizes, but I honestly don't know if uses the same one as the phone/data, or if the chip itself is just a fully integrated receiver
It scanned through the ports and identified it as COM4 and set the speed to 9600. I assume the circle should go green even if the antenna was weak but would be going through the motions of acquiring data.

If it was seeing any sats, there would be bars in the screen, like the screenshot on their site...so yes it def looks like the phone isn't locking at all. Just to be sure, is your QuickGPS data up to date?
I'd say the next step to try before trying to crack your case open would be to follow ultramag's suggestion and flash to a different radio...some users report drastic improvements in GPS performance after taking that step

How long did you wait? I've noticed that it can take up to 10-15 minutes before it'll lock all of them in and turn green. Are the bars moving at all?
Was running over 30 mins and stayed yellow. Bars never budged. I've had the same radio for the past 6 months at least so can't see why it would suddenly become a problem now.
Looks like my only option might be to open it up and check the connections. Everyone drops their phones now and again and I'm no different so there's every possibility of something having come loose.
Has anyone got a photo of the inside so I know what I'm looking for ? Where is the GPS ?
C
com 4 is correct as is 9600 baud. Likely the issue is with the radio you are using. T Mobile radios seem quite touchy. Try a new radio and see what you get. Start gps test first, get the gps running and locked before opening any program that needs gps to work and you likely will have better performance.

mine was working fine and like you was doubting my hardware... seems strange as my issues started with a software update ...some telcos (Telstra in AU) software conflicts with GPS... I installed a HTC rom from Europe yesterday and GPS is now working great... even now locks while car is in garage.. the HTC Desire just released in AU is also having GPS issues on Telstra 6.5 rom ... so have you tried a rom update? as sounds like may be your issue as well...
I'm running Deepshining Rom X6. I had the previous v12RC running since it was released with no problems. I had radio 4.49.25.17 running all the time but just decided to up this to 4.49.25.77 but still no change. It still says "GPS Starting Up". I must have some sort of loose connection since it wouldn't work last Saturday or Sunday but then worked fine on Monday and Wednesday. However, it hasn't worked again since last Wednesday.

I just opened up my TP2. Is the GPS chip just to the left of the Camera ? (on the right is the Speaker)

Yes, yes, I totally should have done the search which I obviously totally didn't, otherwise I totally would have found the solution. Please spare me these kinds of answers, I did my research as much as I could...
Now, the outline of the problem:
-I cannot get a gps fix. I think I probably managed get an accurate location with google maps. Once for 10 seconds, and then it was gone.
-The phone cannot see satellites.
-Antenna, GPS antenna and antenna cover have been replaced, it was repaired 3 times with the same no-lock issue. It did not fix it, tho.
-I tried stock roms, cooked roms, different kernels and different radios. It still could not see a single satellite.
-I tried the "wipe this-install fasterfix-gps-status-enable that" stuff I stumbled upon so far.
-The most accurate position I can get is around 600-1500 meters. No change if I enable the GPS satellites.
-I tried Ndrive, IGo and Google maps, under open sky for long minutes. Nothing.
Any ideas?

lol it sounds me (i had a lot of problems with my gps...)
1- u tried flashing the recommended base band radio?
2-u tried (IMPORTANT) to flash the correct RIL?
3-u tried to warm up the metalic contacts that are under the gps cover?
4-try it and then use GPS STATUS to fix it....
5-post the results please
1- u tried flashing the recommended base band radio?
Yes.
2-u tried (IMPORTANT) to flash the correct RIL?
AFAIK I need it only if I don't use recommended radio. I used recommended radios with sense roms, as well as I do now with MDJ's UD 1.8+kernel+recommended radio.
3-u tried to warm up the metalic contacts that are under the gps cover?
The phone is on the sun when I'm leaving it out to get a fix. Also, I hold it in hand, which supposedly warms it up.
4-try it and then use GPS STATUS to fix it....
See above.
5-post the results please
Still :/ http://db.tt/qH2YCbW
i´m not fully understand your post but raising a bit the contacts i was obtained better gps fix (weird but true)....
in adition... i think you should try ALL THE POSSIBILITIES... in a few words... flash the RIL
HTC policy is to replace the handset after 3 repairs. Send it back. That's HTC UK anyway.
Hi to all.
Erm.. what do you mean by warm up the metalic contact?

Woah, it would be awesome. I had it reapaired in Carrefour, France. So I don't know if it stands for those repairs too. Now I'm home in Hungary, so we'll see. I will definitely keep returning it if it takes that to get a working phone...
Same problem here, except my GPS worked perfectly fine until I upgraded to Android 2.3 last week. Since then I can't get a single satellite to lock.
I've used GPS Status to reset and download A-GPS data to no avail.
HTC told me to factory reset my phone which I've done. Nothing works!!
Tried with and without SIM. Various combinations of WIFI on/off with SIM inserted and removed.
I'm really angry.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Matt
Have you been SFR? Just asking, my phone was SFR, and I read something in french about some messed up stuff of SFR software... it was long ago tho.
