Here we go again...Another Noobie Upgrade Question.

Well hello.
First off i want to appologise for my bad english and for not knowing so much about how things work around windows mobile upgrading. Ive tried to read as much as possible but some things i just dont get.
The issue is about a Samsung SGH-i320 wich i dont know is a PPC or a Smartphone or if it belongs between any other smartphone fammily. Because of the BlackJack or SGH-i600U being out, the price on the i320 has sunken to an affordable price. So i bought one and im happy!... Well as happy as i can get for 212,74 EUR...
What ive read there is a WM6 upgrade out for the i600 somewhere ?
But can i theoreticly cook or make a ROM from that for my i320? Cuz what i understand the only difference in hardware is the cam and wifi abilities...
Or is there like a ROM that is universal for some mobiles/smartphone familys?
Thx for ur patience and time...
Welcome to the forum!
No need to apologize, your English is fine. And learning new things about our phones is why we are all here.
Your phone is a 'Smartphone'. It is very simple to tell the difference between a smartphone and pocket pc: smartphone does not have a touch screen but pocket pc does.
Note that 'Smatrtphone' is both the name of the Microsoft platform that runs your phone and a general term for phones that can do more than just calls and simple java applets.
Now there is no and can not be a 'universal' ROM for windows mobile devices because even devices with identical hardware may have different memory mapping or bootloader.
It is theoretically possible to make ROM for one device from a device that is close to it but we do not have cooking tools for Samsung phones here.
This forum is mainly about HTC made devices.
That said I am fairly sure someone somewhere is working on i320 so keep searching.
Please do not try to upgrade directly with the i600 ROM. You will kill your phone.
Thank u very much for ur perfect answer
U even got me to understand u...
Ok so trying to upgrade my phone with the i600 ROM is a extremly bad idea eh? hehe
Well i just have to keep my eyes open and see if something happens...
Thank u so much Now i have to take care of my kids.
The answer was not fully perfect; we simply can assume no WM6 version will ever be available for this phone ?

Regarding software, best bet would be to ask for something specific, and before asking, check through the forums to see if anyone else hasn't asked, or just released something you want.
cracked software will not get discussed here, if you want something like that, there are plenty of places on the web to look, but that discussion here isn't acceptable.
best bet would be to look through the custom(cooked) roms and see what you like, both Meschle and Tom have good roms out which add extra functionality to your phone.
I'm using Meschles Touch 3.01 (without cube) at the moment, very nice and complete, i'd read through the first few pages of the thread to get a few hints and tips also.
Have fun
i know what you mean
but i want like a noobs guide into what everything means
as what i know as a rom doesnt seem to mean the same thing when regards to phones
ive taken a guess at cooked means homebrew
just an idiots insite would be helpful
many thanks for your reply

I don't much care where" - Said Alice in Wonderland, "so long as I get somewhere".
"Then it does not matter which way you go", answered the Cheshire Cat.
Be more specific, like software for your PC there are 1001 different kinds of software and ways to use a handheld device. I myself use it mainly for navigation, adressbook, agenda, 'gameboy', Radio/MP3 Player, an occasional (GPS localised)photo and of course telephone and SMS. The herefound personalized Roms give you some extra options which often are mentioned in the first post in the corresponding threads.
Try to get hands on the manual, read the wiki/stickys and reconsider what you are asking .
As a starting point, i'd recommend you check out http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Artemis

Could Anyone help?

Hiya everybody!
I would love if someone could give me directions on where I can get good ROMs for flashing my brand new Artemis...
I'm brazilian, but I'm looking for a ROM in english with the best functions that people could get together....
I'm totally new to modding in here, tho I'm sorta pro in modding Motorola's MotoMING phone (my last one)
So if anyone could help me with directions of a newbie guide, I'd be glad....
I could write a newbie guide myself later on....when I lose the newbie status LOL
Check here for tips http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=362
There are also quite a number or ROMs in there too.
Although I would definately recommend this one.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365312 .. great speed, very light so you can add all your own apps and customize it how you like. Generally speakingm, after flashing alot of ROMs to my Orbit, I tend to stick with Meschle's ROMs and usually stick to his latest Vanilla. Although as I say there are alot of others, depends what your looking for from the ROM.
Any other questions Id be glad to help. I also have quite a collection of prgrams n customiations n stuff if your looking anything.
Thanks a lot for the hand!
It surely will come handy! I got the USPL to go over the CID locking system....
The carrier problem can be solved by the carrier itself, at least nowadays.....
To tell the truth, I'm in need of some tutorials on the best programs to have, what kind of stuff fits well in it...
I work with game design, and I'm starting to develop on python....I was wondering if there is anyway to run python programs in it too...
Last but not least, how much knowledge is necessary to work with Artemis?!?!!? LOL
Hmm unfortunately I dont do programming n such, i think you probably be better off asking those questions in the artemis developement / hacking section
If you were to develop Pocket PC applications, you may use eVC (free) or VS2005/8 (more expensive)
No idea about pythons.
How much knowledge? Probably nothing or as much as it is needed to read english. All you need is to experience and experiment to learn.
Regards,
Carty..
@fubofo
Thanks for answering again, man! I know that not everyone is a fan of programming stuff....
I got the ROM you said you were using and I'm gonna flash it today...hope it works and I don't end with a 15 hundred bucks brick....
@Carty
When I said knowledge, I ment time spent studying stuff made for it and etc...but still the ability to read english is way too complex for some people in my country....
I'll take a look at the eVC and see what can be done in it....
I have Eclipse's SDK and Visual Studio 2008 here....any of them is good for it?

If you had searched you would have found ...... this quite accessible ... the only ROM that comes with one is .... this ...
But I think you need to do a fair bit more reading and searching before you go ahead and flashing stuff if you think touchflo is a ROM
Hehehe, thanks alot Zocster...Believe it or not, i did actually search and ive been reading alot of posts! Im not 1 of those forum idiots who randomly posts messages without reading anything...
However, i am TOTALLY new to this world! I decided to ditch the trusty old cell phone and move to a pocket pc/pda phone whatever you wanna call it I have decided on a TyTN and am now getting into the world of cooked ROMs and all the stuff you guys know all about
Im learning!!!

I seeI have an imate jasjam, so yeah you have a front camera I presume you would want to make video calls too then, so may be that ROM i mentioned not for you as it doesn't have video calling dial pad cooked in.
To be brutally honest, Ive had a Sony Ericsson K800i for a year and a half now and have NEVER used the video calling feature Our networks are rather unstable and its expensive, so why bother Im just looking for a fast, reliable ROM

Let me see then ... you have ten or so ROMs to try out took me two months to go through about 30 from pays, tnt, binky11s, now crc and pdacorner as my favs. You need to know what works for you, make sure you read the wiki, you don't want to kill your new toy ey ...
Welcome by the way .. saw it was your second post oh by the way, go the wallabies, even though i live in new zealand! hehe .. and this is for the trinations!
Much obliged Zocster!!!
Thanks alot for your help...I know that forum noobs are often ignored or flamed lol!!!
The problem i have is being a complete newcomer to this stuff...I honestly dont know where to start, I was hoping there would be a poll with "your favorite ROM" or something, then at least id have somewhere to start

Sorry mate, honestly, ... trying it yourself is the only way you can judge, read the wiki, and try out different roms, as i said what is good for me may not be good for you. So go try them all out and make up your mind from experience. I have had my phone for two months and I have been through honestly about 20 or so roms before i made up my mind, each chefs have got their own style and yeah you need to determine what style suits you.
Thanks alot, will definitely do so
One more question...In my research on the P4350 which uses the 200mhz OMAP cpu, i read that there is an app to overclock (and declock) the device, does the TyTN have a similar app??

If you want to keep your device for another couple of years, then no, it is not recommended. it is doable, but it would not be doing your device any favour.
Well since the reviews i read all said the TyTN is powerful enough, im actually more interested in declocking the device when i dont need the power, to save battery life

hmm, you need to try the roms available, and once you get applications such as BT GPS, BT Stereo, MP3 etc going, plus the touchflo extension you mentioned, it ain't all that powerful.
These chefs have done their best to make the most out of a device that is 2 years old. so ... yeah it isn't that powerful, but yes you will determine that when you have run a couple of things on the hermes have fun, ...
Starbase has the cab on his 4shared site. I have had it before, but find it useless, the touchflo that schaps has is better for finger scrolling and quick landscape mode switches however.
Good to see more South Africans here. (From South Africa myself). As Zocster said, just try the roms out. Been flashing my TyTN at least once a week. Just remember to Hard-SPL first.

Glad someone remembered.....
lol thanks guys!!!
Been reading the guides and the wikis, will definitely hardSPL first
first of all make hardspl ! it is the first thing you need to flash into your tytn....what you meen about -toch flo- ? many component may be instaled on any rom. personaly I use 3ppc.net russian 6.1 rom, whith htc home today plugin (one part of tochflo) included. for finger scroling I use ftochFlo, cube not use at all - personaly I found it useless....(anyway - there are some custom cube on 'hacking and developing' section of developers, as for me it much better than original.)
about overclock. sumsung procesors (which use tytn) is wery bad in frequency control. looks like time generator somehow connected whith main frequency - when you changing it, a lot of bugs appear....for example - if you overclocked cpu, you will notice that music/video/e.t.c. will run more fast that it needed. no need to worry about cpu power consumtion - it low anyway for samsung cpu. much more buttary will eat 3g, wifi, backlight e.t.c.

I think Android on the Rhodium is a lost cause now :(

I hate to admit it, but everyone has moved on to the HD2. They have pretty much everything working on the HD2 but there is no developers working on the Rhodium and we have no sound yet.
I really thank all the devs and everyone else involved into making Android run on our Rhodiums, but we gotta face the truth someday. It was fun and I cook WinMo ROMs for the Rhodium, but we gotta realize its dated. The only reason I still have my Rhodium is because it has a keyboard. I'm waiting for a humming bird core HTC phone with QWERTY to make the upgrade. I know some people are gonna flame. Its OK I understand you want to hold on to that Rhodium you have. We ALL do.
PS: Its sad seeing craiglisters selling Android for the HD2. I wish I could kill them all. They don't deserve any money since they did not do any of the work involved nor did they contribute ONE thing. This is why I hate scenes like the smartphone scene... People take credit for what isn't theirs.

Keep doing what you do Reefer, I am patiently waiting for the next update!
I'm getting sick of threads on this, I'm sure devs do not appreciate them either..
Why you gotta be so negative? They are doing their best they can so why don't you lock yourself in the closet and come out of there once android has been fully ported to our device

I an getting a little woried that we have reached the point of no return. It would be helpfull if the devs did post updates to let use know where we stand. I am not giving up hope just yet. I can't upgrade for quite some time and don't want to pay out the nose for something that could give me just what I am looking for.
Just want so feedback from devs to know what's up?

Its funny, I bet there were people like you guys years ago for the Kaiser and Vogue... they work 100% now BTW. It doesnt mean people still use their Kaiser with Android for their daily phone (some do of course) but thats not what XDA is about. This used to be a strickly development forum, now its full of "gimme-gimme" users who think the OP of the thread is Customer Service.

Keep up the good work. Ignore the leeches. All they do is take. They dont realize that their purpose should be to test and return feedback on the testing. Instead they seem to think that this forum is like you said, full of customer service reps. Its pathetic.
Anyhow, there are tons of people who appreciate all of the developers work and look forward to more updates.
Yea Reefer, let em have it. I wish I could help more to unlock the potential of this phone. It really is a pretty slick device that just wasn't given enough polish or muscle. I researched the purchase of it for months beforehand and don't want to just give it up now.

No one thinks this is CS, i flash a rom, install a kernel and it messes something up. There is no one better to ask than the devs that made the rom, right????? BOOOYEAH
OP, there is work being done on the sound issue, however it is slow going. I try following the development, but it's WAY over my head.
Reefer for president !!!
agreed its completely dead i envy all the hd2 ppl running android
You are absolutely correct very dead. You should just get HD2s and give me your TP2s.
or pre-order ur 4g Epic.. thats what i did..

Wrong. they make a rom and put it on here for everyone. and lets say 50 people download it. and 25 of them have a problem with it. you realy thing that a dev has time to try and fix 25 peoples problems while at the same time make updates to the roms cause your demanding them? thats not how it works. if you install a rom and something goes wrong then you ask the 24 other people if any of them have had the same problem or found a fix. your a tester. if your getting the devs work for free. the least thing you could do is test it and let everyone know how it works.
Dated but not dead.
You may think its dead but for people who still own the TP2, like myself, would like to see this till the end. I still have another year with this phone before I can upgrade and I cant fork out 500+ dollars to buy a new one like the HD2 or Incredible. I'm sure there are others out there in the same situation. So just because you were able to move on with an upgrade doesn't mean its dead.
sound will be working in a matter of time acl is making head way on it over at ppcgeeks.
