Bandwidth? - About xda-developers.com

Does anyone know how much bandwidth XDA uses? It has to be a ton for everyone that's online... close to 4000 right now, and i know that it'll be more later on in the day.

Thanks, i was just wondering... this is a really big site, and i KNOW that it has to use a ton of bandwidth

I see what you mean by handles it OK up to 5500 users... 6400, and it feels like the site is about to fall apart

ah... no wonder, it is slower then I've every experienced it before.... 6275 users!!!

Ha, broke a record, more users than ever were on... that's... amazing lol

XDA is best in the mornings here in UK

Lucky... waiting 45 or more seconds for the browser to CONNECT and start downloading the page can get annoying... took me about a minute and a half to get to the point where i could scroll down and click on a link... and repeat the process lol

site is feeling very slow here, sometimes even timing out

it is beautiful and so slim considering what is under the hood! been trying that dual speakerphone system and it works well. tried using in noisy environment and it auto fades out surrounding noise so you can hear what other person is saying! still cant stop the wind blowing into speakers though!
interesting to see what battery life will be on this thing as that could be its achiles heel! added coreplayer via cab and it works well. videos look stunning! the tilt screen is much stiffer so it don't flop about like on my old kaiser/tilt. used to think the screen on my kaiser would fall off at anytime! it would be nice if people posted the their initial feelings of the device wen 1st received and thoughts after a few days of use. i will be!
thanks all

yeah i know that but cheers for pointing out. getting its ass kicked today to see how it holds up after 1st charging cycle. gave it overnight charge - 12hrs. really hope battery holds up as this could be the only thing that could be its undoing. however saying that, when all the cooks start building rhodium roms etc i am sure there will be things in place to aid battery life!
few other things
no spare stylus. searched whole box and nothing.................
slide out mechanism is a bit stiff for my liking but like the sturdier feel to tilt screen. not sure bout purple background and do like the t-mobile look. that will be my 1st enhancement changing clocks and penguin to t-mobile rhodium look! will post screenshots of how it looks once done! very quick scrolling and smooth accross tabs. mem usage 50% as standard. music playback is more than suitable and in my opinion quite good! FINGERPRINT magnet my god! ugh hate that but will have to live with it! screen protector in box but i can never apply without getting bubbles underneath! big fingers/hands. i find tilt suitable enough for watching vids from my desk or table at home! can't wait to see WM6.5 on this machine
edit: still have the issue where i have to untick proxy in connections to get certain web apps working on t-mobile. for example messenger! not a big prob and doesn't slow down connection speed!

TP2 Lags... Is it worth what I paid?

Hi all,
I have tried a couple of the Mighty Roms and I like them. However I feel that the TP2 is just not up to par as far as hardware is concerned. It seems like the software is too much for the hardware.
Browsing using Opera 9.5 is extremely slow as far as rendering the websites, especially when scrolling around. I am in Miami with full EVDO bars and tested the speed on dslreports (1400kbits).
Does anyone else experience this "lag" with the TP2? I have used other phones and they do not seem to act as overwhelmed as the TP2 does.
Specs:
TP2 Sprint
MightyRom 12/6
No programs installed other than what came with the MightyRom.
Is my TP2 defective? I purchased it brand new at the sprint store.
Please let me know if I should return it, exchange it or something else. Thanks in advance.
Same thing here, Opera renders so incredibly slow sometimes. I use wikipedia alot and some pages can take 5-10 mins easily to finishin loading. That's using my wifi connection.
I don't have a gripe with anything else though, my TP2 is quick and responsive in all other programs.
Wow, I've never experienced 5-10 min load times in Opera. I tried bringing up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page just now and it took about 8 seconds over 3G.
Tip to improve Opera Mobile performance: Disable Javascript
Most sites work just fine with javascript disabled. I only enable it when it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise, I leave it off. Load times are significantly faster and I don't get annoyed by ads as much.
In terms of general performance, I'm extremely satisfied with my TP2. The stock WinMo 6.1 ROM was excellent. I've not had much luck with WinMo 6.5 until fairly recently when I stumbled across Sergio's and Josh's ROMs. Those are excellent when it comes to performance and RAM usage.
I did have a problem with the Wifi being painfully slow but then I re-adjusted the Wifi power settings. With every other HTC device I always turned it down to the best battery setting but the TP2 doesn't like it. After reading on these forums I put the setting back to default (in the middle) and now it's as fast as it should be.
Other than that no problems, apart from the fact my network limits HSDPA speeds to 384kb/s unless I want to pay for a more expensive package. Last time I get a contract with them !
I've found page loading and scrolling to be snappy in opera, and I'm still on a carrier ROM. I guess it's all relative, but I can't imagine my TP2's performance being described as "overwhelmed".
What kind of sites are slowing you down? Does Google News slow you down as much abcnews?
This question is also rather dependent on what you paid, isn't it ?
I mean, mine cost me £80 (around US$130) and since I've spent almost that on 30ml of dessert wine before I thought it to be quite a good deal. It maybe on a contract, but I'd be on contract anyway so.....

you gotta good deal on the tp2 but ripped off on the glass of wine there skippy! lol
try two things:
-opera 10 beta, which is in my opinion much faster than 9.5, fyi the zoom slider doesn't work.
-josh's new perfectblack 1.5 rom

I think the wine was well worth it considering it was bottled in 1896.
Don't that that opportunity everyday !
I hard reset my phone, something I knew I should have done in the first place but never did. I had a HTC6800 for two years and always hard reset after flashing a new rom. Sloth on my part.
Also, I installed a cab which tweaks opera 9.5, which seems to have sped it up. I also installed Opera Mini Beta 5 and it is very nice.
Thanks a lot guys!

Remote browsing? (and other stuffs and fluffs)

Hello ladies, gents, killer droids and aliens.
A somewhat long time lurker finally decided to register myself
Anyway, it seems quite likely that I'll pull trigger on one Desirable droid in a near future.
But I have to know couple of things before I dive in head first into the world of droids.
So if any of you could answer those questions, it would be... in the word of Borat, "Very nice" Here goes nothing!
1. Is it possible to browse files in my PCs on my LAN via WLAN from desire?
2. If so, is it possible to stream files (mp3s and avi most likely) from there to be played on desire?
3. Lastly, can desire handle WPA2-PSK?
Cheers!
In answer to your first two, yes (using EStrongs File Explorer, although I'm sure other apps will do it too) and a hesitant yes. Hesitant because I use the Subsonic media server to do just that but that might not be what you're after. Not sure if anything else can do it as I haven't tried. Subsonic is incredibly easy to set up though, and a one-time donation gives you Android streaming for life.
Not sure about the third as my home uses standard WPA for legacy reasons. I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't though.
Hey thanks for a quick answer!
Hm that subsonic seems like it's only meant for music and not for movies and such hmm...
Well the reason I asked about WPA2 is that my other handhelds such as DS and PSP aren't supporting it in the first place (which is a kind of bummer, but I will never lower security for play stuff online in any case)
Yes to number 3.. i use that encryption at home and the desire connects no problem...

Ah yes, sorry, Subsonic is just for music, but it does that music very well!
Can't help with video streaming, but it wouldn't surprise me to see something that does it. There's already the Youtube and Beebplayer apps so it can't be hard to do the same for LAN based videos.
Thanks micks & Noiz!
Well, you can come quite far with couple of gigs of music (besides I already have iPod nano) but TV series and such are bit bigger than mp3s you know? So I wasn't all that sure if I wanted to transfer everything to the phone.
BTW are there any competent program which can run divx without any hitch? or is the "convert the avi file to something else" the way to go?
ATM converting to mp4 with x264 is the way to go. unfortunately.
I recall reading something about somthing, like "Divx playback out of the box" and that kind of fluff regarding Desire before...
Was it pure 100% BS then? .... sigh ....

BS? No.
Available out of the box? No.
Coming "soon" to an OTA update near you? Yes.
"soon" IE.... next year?
I've seen the slow update on the Hero, so I won't be holdning my breath on this.
(The very reason I didn't go for Hero in the first place, painfully slow updates)

I really wish I could be more specific, but "soon" is as close as it gets.. Hence putting it in quotes.
For now, I'd convert using something like Handbrake. Not an ideal solution as you always lose some of the quality when cross converting, but it's the best solution for the moment.
Yeah I understand that, that's the reason I asked "next year?"
Well, I guess the quality itself won't bother me, after all, it's just on 3.7inch screen.
The main "trouble" as I see is that, it takes such tremendious time converting files.
I mean it takes more time to convert file than show itself you know?
The reason I stopped watching stuff on my PSP, it just took way too much time.
the one worry i'd have about streaming is data usuage... if your on 3g etc.. if you have wi fi handy then great.. but i'd imagine streaming over 3g would eat data quite quickly
Oh I was talking about while I'm on my own network.
So no worries there. Thank you for your concern tho.
But your post reminds of me something, but is kinda OT, should I start a new thread about that, or should I keep going here?
Since nobody's protesting, I'll just go ahead and ask it.
I feel a bit torned about how much data plan I'll be using.
I will be checking and sending around 10 mails avg a day, maybe some net surfing (nothing heavy duty) maybe couple of youtube vids, no twitter or facebook.
Will 500mb/month suffice or will I use it up within couple of days? LOL
I srsly have no idea, so any insight will be appreciated!
well i have 50 megs per day (dont ask irish plans are $hite) actually its a pay as you go contract.. 50 megs a day for 99 cents.. never go over that to be honest.. i have email client on and browse the web a bit.. and market place.. wouldnt watch video etc or do streaming unless i'm on wireless network... i think unless your doing streaming or sending large emails you'd do well to use 500 in a month.. i know guys who are on 250mb for a month and they say it doesnt them fine..

I think it really depends on your usage. I suggest a data monitoring app such as 3G Watchdog. Run it for a few days and it'll give you a good guage as to how much data you're using.
Well micks, when you think about it you have 50mb a day!
that's total sum of 1.4 gig per month!
So it's like 3 times more than I was thinking about after all.
Fatman, true, however, the provider here are sneaky bunch who allows custmers upgrade on plan, but not downgrade!
Choises choises, just way too many choises tbh.
I have to decide if I gonna go for Legend or Desire in the first place.
I mean Legend got some seriously sexy outershell! But desire shines with raw poweeeerrr.
I'm just asking myself why HTC didn't make legend shell with desire internals!

Got Mango last night - Kudos Microsoft

Granted I did the disconnect trick (and am getting 30fps fwiw), but still, everything from how they lined up all the carriers to how much of an improvement it is. Great great job!!
The biggest thing for me is, the entire platform is so -fast- now.
Even for stuff like getting around the phone. It goes to the home screen so much quicker (I knew that beforehand but using it is so nice). The People update area no longer take 30 seconds, it takes 2, if that. Fantastic. And the surfing! IE is blazing fast now. Such a welcome relief. AND there is turn by turn... here in Canada. Local search is still hit and miss but when you do click on directions it takes you there with voice, awesome. And I saw some traffic updates in a test run I did.
I know I was one of the ones saying "don't expect it to Q2 2012", so I am gladly eating my words.
I also know that there is a lot of negativity around here (which is sometimes me), so I wanted to 'positive' it up a bit. Mango is a solid solid step. Although I preferred OneNote when it wasn't purple...

3G crap connection, but this is odd.....

Not only do I get the Loss of Signal and not know about it, but the 3G is horrible when compared to other Sprint devices in my area. I could be standing next to a person with an EVO 3D and they will have way faster downloads....but that is not why I am posting here today. So, I noticed that if I turn on the display and try to get online it takes forever!!! To the point where I have been thinking "why did I switch to Sprint"...BUT once I hit one site and go to another and another the data speed appears to be picking up and pages are loading quick like they should. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this with this phone?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
you mean like this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aq0eWrsUbvE&feature=youtu.be
Evo 3D on the left, MY phone....ET4GT on the right.
I have the same data problems with my phone. Sprint 3G in the houston metro area is horrible.
..
no your not crazy, the data speeds are truly terrible and cell reception is by far the worst on sprint.i dont get it and no fix or update for this in site, with all that this is still a great phone wish an update that can correct these issues comes out any time soon.then this will be the best phone ever........with a little more dev support 2 would be nice from roms.
I know for a fact that my slow connection is not the phone. At 5am I have no issues pulling down 1+Mbps. Through out the day it gets slower and by evening it can get to teens Kbps. My Evo 4G, Mogul running WM6, hacked Droid incredible and even a Virgin Optimus V all have about the same speeds at the same time of day. In my area it's just overloaded towers.
Sprint sat on their a$$ for a few years and now they are paying the price.

Just like that. That video makes me sick. So, I emailed [email protected] today and a Sprint rep actually called me. The rep said they have no idea what it is, sure you don't, but that they would investigate what could be causing the problems.
After seeing this video I emailed the rep the link, lets see what they come back with.
I want to love Sprint but they are making it hard.
