Got Mango last night - Kudos Microsoft - Windows Phone 7 General

Granted I did the disconnect trick (and am getting 30fps fwiw), but still, everything from how they lined up all the carriers to how much of an improvement it is. Great great job!!
The biggest thing for me is, the entire platform is so -fast- now.
Even for stuff like getting around the phone. It goes to the home screen so much quicker (I knew that beforehand but using it is so nice). The People update area no longer take 30 seconds, it takes 2, if that. Fantastic. And the surfing! IE is blazing fast now. Such a welcome relief. AND there is turn by turn... here in Canada. Local search is still hit and miss but when you do click on directions it takes you there with voice, awesome. And I saw some traffic updates in a test run I did.
I know I was one of the ones saying "don't expect it to Q2 2012", so I am gladly eating my words.
I also know that there is a lot of negativity around here (which is sometimes me), so I wanted to 'positive' it up a bit. Mango is a solid solid step. Although I preferred OneNote when it wasn't purple...

Should I upgrade to Dash 3G?

I've had my Dash 1 for about a year now and happy with it. I upgraded it to the 6.1 rom.
I'm not sure if I should upgrade to the new Dash 3G. I use my phone mostly for IRC, texting, and corp email. I try to web browse with IE/Skyfire but most of the time, the phone will run out of memory due to the heavy email client that I need to use (Good Messaging).
I do not see any thing that the Dash 3G will offer me that I don't already have. Stable web browsing would be nice though. GPS a plus since I tend to rely on Google Maps.
Is the Dash 3G the must have upgrade for us Dash 1 users? Since I bought my Dash 1 at full price, I still qualify for the 2 year contract for $169 at T-Mobile (I hate contracts!).
I was considering posting this in the Maple forum, but it would probably get more views here.
D3G has alot more RAM and a higher clock speed, plus the keyboard looks easier to type on. If your happy with your Dash you can just hang on to it until the price goes down on the D3G in a few months. With higher end phones being offered on AT&T for cheaper w/contract, I can see them lowering the price sooner than expected.
From what Ive seen it definantly is an upgrade for Dash users, and cooked ROMs are already in the works. I cant wait to get my hands on one, especially since im in a T-mo 3g area.
I am a currently on T-Mobile and was just about to switch to AT&T, mainly because I couldn't use 3g with my Tilt. I really wanted 3g speeds since you can do 'internet sharing' in windows mobile, then tether it to my laptop via bluetooth. This would open a whole new world for me...I've only had my tilt a few months now...and I'm itching bad for 3g.
I'm not sure on t-mobile's stance on tethering, although when I was on the phone with one of their escalation techs for 'non t-mobile phones' in the past, they were pretty cool with giving me info on tethering, and even refering me to xda-developers. I'm sure their default Dash 3g will probably be missing the applications for that option though.
I'm still trying to decide if I should get the new MyTouch vs. Dash 3g...I've read about google blocking an app that allowed Andriod tethering, does anyone know if its still available/possible?
I have had my 3G for about a week. It is a great phone. I miss my Excalibur, it has been the best phone I have ever owned and the support and ROM's here are absolutely awesome.
Do you have 3G service where you live, work, and/or travel often?
Are you running applications that exceed current memory?
Are there applications that you do not run because of speed and/or memory limitations?
I will say that I absolutely hated to shelf the Excalibur but I do enjoy the speed of the device and the data network. Tethering is the same as the previous model. The battery life is great, and the trackball took getting used to but has become indespensable. The first couple days I really debated keeping it, but am glad I did....at least for now.
i think if you're in a 3g area and can hold back on getting better cooked roms and want to deal with a blackberry wannabe retard trackball then you should go for it. i ordered one just off the principle that the silver piece on my dash started peeling off and i needed something that wasnt fallling apart but.. i love the dash. although the buttons on the 3g are amazing. no joggr though... who says you can't swap your sim every once in a while. i hear you have to get a different data plan for the 3g service though.. not sure yet but i'm sure someone does
I'm looking on Ebay at the Dash 3G and I'm not seeing any that's unlocked. Does anyone know if anyone has unlocked a Dash 3G yet? I need to use in on AT&T.
I really can't see any benefits to going to the Dash 3g.
- No 3G service in my area
- Same screen, same resolution as Dash 1
GPS would be nice, but I'm planning on getting the next iPod Touch which is rumored to have it. Can't use iPhone because I need corp email.
The Dash 3G would give me better web browsing and probably longer battery life. For $169 with no contract I would probably pick one up. I hate signing the 2 year contract in case I want to switch phones. The Dash 3G might really show it's age in 2 years.
But I am a fan of the Dash. I cannot stand stylus/touch screen on the other Windows Mobile phones.
and I just read Telenav is $9.99/month. I will not be getting GPS on the Dash 3G then.

3G Tether
My friendly T-Mobile rep told me that T-Mo will not support tethering any 3G phone because they don't want to sacrifice the bandwidth.
My solution (until last week) was to use my G1 and swap my sim to my Tilt when I needed to tether. That stopped last week when my G1 suddenly started to refuse any data connection with a notice that I needed to change to a G1 compatible data plan.
More discussion with the T-Mo folks has gotten them to offer to replace my G1 with any other phone, and I think I may go to the D3G and then keep my Tilt charged for tethering until there is a D3G rom that will support it.
Thoughts?

I tether my 3g dash often (like now) without issue. They may be trying to stop those that are not paying for the 3g plan from utilizing a 3g phone/data by putting the sim in a 3g device. Just a guess, but I have not had an issue.
I had the Snap for a day. Then returned it. Mainly because the Menu keys were bad quality (getting stuck, etc... see my detailed thread in the Maple forum).
Other issue was the keyboard layout. Yes, the keys are huge but they are too crammed and you can't feel the gaps between them and it's harder to touch type. I also prefer the grid alignment of the Excalibur.
Trackball was useful although web browsing still seemed sluggish.
Battery life seemed nice (limited experience), GPS is definitely welcome.
Overall, I expected to be blown away by the speed improvement (faster CPU) but wasn't. Yes, it's better but not THAT much.
Had a brief love affair with a sweet Samsung C6625 but left it on the shelf (because I love this forum!).
I will probably upgrade some day, but this keyboard bug has to be fixed first (I'm not the only one)
Greg
I went to the T-Mobile store and played with one. It was definately nice but not game-changing. Like I said, I already have Win 6.1 on the Excalibur.
I would grab it for $169 straight up without the contract. But not with a 2 year contract.
I had a hands-on today, awsome phone, I love the keyboard. Cant wait to have one.
I upgraded from the old Dash to the new Dash 3G. I can say that I am not disappointed at all.
Bigger keyboard, longer battery life, faster cpu, definitely worth it.
I use my phone to keep in touch with my customers via email as I am always on the go(this is where the bigger keys help). I listen to Sirius with the SiriusWM5 app all day(benefit of the bigger battery). Also, doing both on my old Dash seemed to be laggy, switching between email and my media player, causing audio to skip, or having to wait a few seconds just to see who sent me an email. New model I can do this with no lag, skips, or delays(this is where the faster processor in the new 3G has helped out).
HTC DASH 3G hardware review
I HOPE THIS REVIEW IS HELPFUL TO PEOPLE. I TRIED TO BE AS OBJECTIVE AND THOROUGH AS POSSIBLE. -Justin Chandler
Before agreeing to a contract and upping to the Dash 3G, I decided to buy one outright to test its functionality. I would be "upgrading" from the old dash (been using it since 06 and crappy WM5) with the XDA-Developers.com WM6.1 ROM.
Hardware review:
The new dash's design is attractive, both visually and functionally. It is all black with a very sleek and professional look. It definitely looks nicer than the old one visually. The buttons take a little time to get used to because they do seem flatter, but the larger size of them helps a lot. People with larger fingers will appreciate this, I'm sure. Also, they are very well lit and much easier to see in the dark than the old Dash1's buttons.
Though it may not actually be flatter than Dash1, it feels flatter for some reason and gives the perception of being more technologically advanced when you hold it. The rubber back on the Dash in general was well-received by many including myself, although the new rubber on the Dash3G seems a little too smooth and has a tendency to slip around in your hand more than Dash1, especially when doing single-handed typing.
The new dash [probably related to the added height], it seems a little off balance in my hands. I'm 5'8" so those with larger hands may not experience this as much.
I liked the old rubber backing because I could put the phone in a little dash box below the radio in my car and it would grip happily and never move. The new one slips and slides around like a dog on a newly-waxed floor.
What can you say about the screen? It's the same screen as the old dash in most ways, though it does seem brighter with richer colors. Again there's not much to say, but it is nicer for sure.
The control area of the dash, has been changed a lot, with different button positioning and the inclusion of a trackball. I admit I have hit the home and back keys on accident many times, trying to make selections, though you could train your hands out of that I'm sure. Many of you are likely pleased to see a trackball included, though don't be to quick here. It is nice having a mouse pointer in web pages, though no amount of tweaking with the settings was able to overcome the fact that it scrolls too many pixels at a time, often making it difficult to select a link [while browsing]. The solution is to scroll up or down the web page a little then go back down to the link so you can click on it. Also, diagonal scrolling just isn't really there. You will get the impression that the trackball only operates in 4 directions with any reliability. Perhaps someone will come up with a tweaking utility that can help overcome this. Clicking with the trackball is also a bit of a task, as the pressure spring below it is a bit too stiff so without fingernails, you may find yourself scrolling off of the point you want to click on before the click actually happens. The power button has been relocated to coincide with the red hangup key now, which is mildly convenient in some ways, but I always used the old power button [on Dash1] for a single press to bring up the menu allowing you to hit various settings, or change the profile in a pinch. I miss this menu but may find it hidden somewhere, as I've only been using the new Dash for about a week. (I HAVE looked, but can't find it, yet).
In addition to the camera and messaging buttons on the bottom right, they have a shortcut key. The email button is nice, but the sliding panel interface already made it very easy to get to messaging for me, so I never used it. The shortcut key is also very nice, though the selection list for what you can assign to it was left lacking. They should allow you to link it to any program, instead of the static list.
The updated camera is much improved. It takes reasonably high resolution photos and video, despite some phones offering even higher resolution than 2.0 megapixels. Those taking high resolution for the purpose of printing out will be using their REAL cameras, anyway. I'm definitely disappointed that they didn't add a flash to the camera, but that's likely due to a lack of real estate, because this phone is in general pretty compact and thin. Adjusting the brightness setting didn't seem to help much, either. Bring your real camera when you have a function, or you'll be disappointed with the images -- but for those impromptu snaps, it gets the job done - and well.
I found that The processor is faster, and helps things along quite a bit. I used OMAP clock at 240MHz on my old dash, and this one easily surpasses it in typical operational speed. Also, when viewing video clips, they are much smoother and skip less, though it still doesn't play streamed video clips nearly as smoothly as the much older iPhone. Expect mildly choppy video streams from Youtube or the like. I did allow full download before playing, so it was not related to connection speed. Opening PDF images and Office documents is definitely much improved and it takes less time to open and scroll through them. I'd say a win here for speed - but they still need to either optimize media content abilities or beef up the processor even more. I have to say I was definitely disappointed, as I was really looking forward to watching smoother streaming content online.
The sound quality is definitely improved, especially when using speaker phone. I still think it's weird that there is a downward-firing speaker but that's just a quirky thing I suppose. Volume was not only more clear, but louder as well. I had to turn my old Dash1 to the highest to hear clearly, and on the Dash3G I set it at about 80% volume level in most cases. They made larger openings in the case for the speakers which may be cosmetic but I believe they are also functional.
The battery cover is a single snap-on unit now, instead of the old slide-off design. While it does give a nice impression of being more refined, those that regularly swap batteries/memory cards or have to remove/replace due to Windows Mobile lock-ups will get annoyed and it will surely wear out much faster because it uses little tabs to snap into place.
GPS functionality is added to the new Dash3G! Awesome, I've been longing for this for quite some time, often jealous of my friends' iPhones and G1s that included this ability. I have a portable GPS, but I don't always drive my own car, especially in Boston, where the commuter bus and train are so convenient. Kudos to HTC for adding this ability to our beloved Dash!
Volume control also gets a thumbs up, as they have gotten rid of that crappy touch-sensitive "jogger" strip from the old phone and replaced it with buttons on the left side. First, moving it to the left side was a good idea because for the majority of people, it places the buttons conveniently for right-handed use of the fingertips. Second, those random changes of your volume while in a call with a single touch of your ear lobe is eliminated.
I am a bit upset, and you may be, too. The new DASH 3G does NOT include a belt clip. Instead, you get a simple leather pouch that is more appropriate for women with purses. This is a business phone, and the huge majority of users are undoubtedly going to be professional men, due to it's more masculine design and also it's business-oriented functionality.
Overall, I'd say it's a win in the hardware category for the new Dash 3G.

HTC DASH 3G software review
(continued from above)
Software review:
HORRIBLE! As stated, on the old Dash1, I have been using the XDA-Developers ROM image for quite some time, and LOVE all the features and functionality available. There are a lot of gripes [and a few good things] with the T-Mobile ROM but overall it's a FAIL!
NO IMAGE EDITING! (WTF!?) That's right! You can't crop, resize, or rotate your images any more, a function that has been available since 2006 and WM5!! A 2nd level T-Mobile support rep was even baffled on this one, as we spent more than 30 minutes poking and prodding around to find where it could be done. I used to have a nice cropped image of my sexy girlfriend on the home screen. Now I just have her face. That means that 1. You can't edit a photo before sending to someone and 2. Taking a picture and then applying as your wallpaper requires a PC with Activesync so you can a) copy the image to the PC, b) edit it to 320x240 size, etc c) copy back to phone, and then d) set your wallpaper. RIDICULOUS!
NO MORE ICS (Internet Connection Sharing/tethering to PC) They have chosen not to include the ability to tether your phone to a PC, so you can't take advantage of the 3G data rate and browse on your laptop, with datacable, bluetooth or whatever. This is a big deal for me, as I am often on the road and make regular use of ICS to get things done on my laptop.
Telenav requires a monthly fee of $10 just to use GPS, hell no! This is a big disappointment. Call me cheap, but I don't feel I should have to pay monthly just to use GPS navigation, especially considering the GPS service is free (don't count your taxes). It's just a program that interprets the maps and calculates a route. Charging a small fee to register the program is reasonable, but a monthly recurring charge? That's preposterous. They did have the decency to include Google Maps, however, which redeems this issue thankfully. It works pretty well and despite my pissy attitude towards the Telenav nonsense, I'm happy to say that you can now use GPS on your dash!
They now group text and multimedia messaging together. This can be a blessing and a curse. It's nice because you don't have to manage multiple locations when cleaning up your sent/inbox/deleted items. It's troublesome because if you want to clean out your regular text messages guess what? You will end up deleting all the media messages at the same time, which at least in my case, I keep the media messages and just clean out my text messages regularly.
No inclusion of an Internet-based backup. I thought it was awesome that Verizon included the ability to backup and restore your contact list to the Internet, and also view that list through your online account. T-Mobile still doesn't include this ability, which is pretty sad in my opinion. You can use Microsoft's free MyPhone application to do this, but only if you're not connected to an Exchange server. I am using MyPhone, but can't backup my contact list online because I'm connected to an Exchange server. They should allow you to at least backup your SIM contacts, because many [including myself] use the phone for business and personal.
T-Mobile added an application that allows you to manage your account straight from the start menu. I found this be be very cool, and many will definitely enjoy it's usefulness, especially those that aren't on an unlimited plan and have to keep an eye on their usage and charges.
The problems with the T-Mobile release of WM6.1 are sufficient that I will be returning the Dash3G and sticking with my old one. The lack of [and simply removed] functionality is definitely not worth the extra speed. I really need the extra speed boost, especially for the many attachments I get as an IT Manager, but I can't get over all the shortcomings. I will keep the phone until this coming weekend, which will be just inside of my 14 day painless return period (you can return within 30 days, but they make you jump through legal hoops and become an ass hole to do it).
Finally, I would like to add that it is my firm wishes that XDA-Developers can come up with a Dash3G version of the wonderful Dash1 ROM image they made famous, and with which made undoubtedly thousands completely addicted to the Dash (not to mention saving them tons of money because of all the great features and applications included). PLEASE, if it's not trouble to convert the old ROM to be used with the new hardware DO IT! You'll have my complete gratitude.
I hope this is useful to some. Thanks from Justin Chandler.

Actually, you CAN edit on the Dash 3G--but it's really not obvious and I don't recall seeing this in the manual. Use the Sliding Panels Media home screen layout, then go to the My Pictures panel and press the trackball. You get the old Pictures and Videos app, which allows editing!

Did Anybody Even Buy The HTC Arrive???

i havent seen any threads posted or anything here whats going on? did u sprint guys pass on the arrive or something?
I will probably get one off contract this week. Not a fan of the form factor, but I need to replace my Diamond ASAP.
Not on Sprint.
I ordered. Looking at other forums it appears that instore stock at most stores was very limited. No best Buys or Radio Shacks carried it. Amazon and Wirefly had it cheaper, but it wont be here until wednesday.
I got one on Sat 3/20, pretty neat so far. I catch myself using my old WebOS gestures sometimes.
I got one today (3/21) Had carried an EVO since day one. still have both. so far so good. the biggest reason Im most likely gonna keep the arrive is the zune player and zune pass.
I posted this review on sprintusers.com:
I came from the Hero running the latest official ROM (Android 2.1 I believe). I've actually extensively played around with WP7 prior to this so I'm very familiar with the OS. IMO there is no comparison between the two devices. It had gotten to the point where I didn't use my Hero for anything other than phone calls and SMS becaues it was so slow. And it wasn't as if I had a bunch of stuff loaded onto it. Even after hard-resetting and only loading absolute essentials (such as Exchange data) it was still SLOOOOW. (lags to switch between screens, pull up menus, open SMS, etc.)
The Arrive on the other hand is lightning quick for the things I want it to do. It loads apps very quickly and never seems to bog down. I've managed to load two exchange accounts as well as several GB of music and videos, sync with FB, etc., and it's still fast. Fast to make phone calls, fast to SMS, fast to load apps. As I said, I have extensively played around with WP7 (was able to borrow a friend's HD7 for several days) so none of this is a suprise to me. Software-wise it delivers exactly as I thought it would.
Comparing the hardware to the HD7 has been interesting. I thought I would find the screen too small on the Arrive but it actually seems to be ok. Definitely smaller than the HD7 (obviously) but not so small as to be a deal-breaker. The biggest surprise has been the quality of the screens between the two. The HD7 colors are very washed out and the screen in general is kind of "meh". The Arrive screen though, really POPS. Colors are nice and saturated and the screen in general seems sharper. My friend who owns the HD7 agreed during a side-by-side comparison. As far as weight, it is noticeably heavier than the HD7. However I think the Arrive feels higher-end than the HD7, even though there is a lot of plastic in both. I can't put my finger on it-- maybe because it's more dense, i.e. more mass in a smaller package, it just seems more substantial.
The keyboard is a pleasure to use-- I have not had a physical keyboard since my HTC Apache back in '06 (!) and I realize now what I have been missing. Very easy to type, intuitive key placement, and good tactile feedback.
All in all I'm very satisfied with the phone. The limitations of the OS have been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere, but as long as you are ok with those limitations you won't be disappointed.

Haha. Im assuming your right
Well the Arrive/7 Pro has it's own Forum section at the verrrrrry bottom of XDA. Most of the posts are there.
I bought one for myself and one for my wife. I am really digging it, there are obviously some things that is missing, but the overall responsiveness and "just works" is great.

If it won't connect to sprint network/activate, go into your settings-->Cellular--> Change Network Profile/Update PRL.
I had to this on mine after the Sprint store activated it because it would not make phone calls/connect to the internet. My wife who got her activated at the same time by the same person did not have to do this.

yeah, that worked. i stumbled upon that a little after posting my last comment and 10 seconds after stumbling upon it, the person from sprint told me to do it.
All I can say about this phone is that this sht is immaculate!
Got mine sat. And I love it, was coming from the evo . I hate the evo and android but I do miss some of it's features! Don't think I'll look back
I pre-ordered mine and picked it up Sunday. I think the thing is very nice. I came from a HTC Hero. What surprised me is the thickness is only sightly more than the hero. It's noticeable but just slightly.
There are a few quirks to get used to, especially multitasking limitations. But the speed, flow and intuitive interface make up for that. Thinking about it, even though my rooted Hero did multitasking, the performance was so bad, it ruined the experience (same goes for my wife's Evo).
I still find myself using the soft keyboard -- but for the long/detailed email composing, you cannot beat having a physical keyboard (screen real estate).

I had two on pre-order. Picked them up on Sun. afternoon (3/20).
I entered my Live ID and had contacts, Xbox, ZunePass configured by the time I hit the parking lot. When I got in the car I added my main Hotmail account, and when I got home I configured it for Exchange. The rest was spent exploring apps (no, Steve Jobs, NOT "apples").
The wife was another story, she's spent a few days on the migration - mostly because she hadn't synced her phone with Outlook in the 30 days prior, she wanted to migrate her PST to another machine, and she hadn't properly configured Outlook to sync with Windows Live. (Edit: Here's the Live support forum thread on that issue)
She's getting where she needs to be - but I think migrating her old Calendar items are giving her problems. She's posted in the Windows Live support forums and I'll try to post a link to the issue later. It's not really a WP7 issue - just a sync issue she's having between Outlook and Hotmail Calendar.
So I guess how smooth it goes depends on how much you embrace the Windows Live "cloud" concept. In my case, I've never had an easier more care-free migration to a new phone. The wife's experience has been frustrating, but mostly because she's having to learn a lot of new things at once and of course she's in a big hurry. Procrastinators of the world unite... tomorrow - right?

Why does my phone get so unstable after awhile?

This has been going on for awhile now but it keeps getting worse and worse. My Tilt2 is extremely unstable. Usually after I flash it it will be fine for awhile, a couple of weeks maybe. After that it gets progressively more and more unstable. It gets less and less responsive, especially when waking, programs close without warning, I sometimes get graphical glitches. Hard locks are not uncommon. There have been days that I have had to soft reset my phone 3 or 4 times during the day.
Sense seems to be at least part of the culprit. Restarting it when things aren't responding seems to help sometimes. I sometimes have had some luck with deleting all of my text messages but that is only temporary at best.
I have been running Energy ROMs for the most part. Other ROMS I have tried have behaved similarly. XDAndroid is also abnormally unstable.
Could a bad SD card be causing the problems? I was trying to record a video with my phone a few days ago and it just suddenly stopped without warning. Trying to start the recording again resulted in it recording maybe a half second and then stopping again. Changing the storage to internal memory allowed recording normally. The camera app has also popped up a message about a new sd card being detected a couple of times recently.
May I add, that I have had enough with this phone. It's absolutely unreliable for any business worker who really needs a phone that can do simple tasks such as check emails, use bluetooth and of course, make a damn phone call - and it sucks at doing so.
I have flashed it with energy, and I must point out the dev has done a good job in appearance, other than that windows 6.1 - 6.5 is a TERRIBLE OS. I don't care what others have to say; if you can prove me wrong, then show a video that the phone is great.
I have numerous occasions where the phone just starts playing up. One huge annoyance is making calls. If someone calls you, who then later hangs up, the first thing you do is check who it is and then unlock the phone. But once you unlock it sometimes it doesn't allow you to press anything on the screen. You are then forced to reset the phone and wait for the boot screen and after that you are taken to the damn TIME REGION setting which takes an eternity to get to (like i already INPUT the place from before, why the hell must I remind the effin phone again?), afterwards even when you make a call, the call connects but you cannot hear ANYONE on the other line - thus you have to RESET the phone AGAIN!
Even once you are on a call, there are times that the phone decides to END IT. One may ask, "well your ear probably touched something" - great, nice to know my ear can act as a small stylus that SOMEHOW it can go slide all the way to the connectivity area and just by chance HIT the 'airplane' mode making the phone unavailable thus ending your call - this has co-incidentally happened to me already about 25 times!
I can keep going on, but check out my rant review on the got mine section here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521271&page=173 - and read till the end.
While it has tons of nice eye candy, Energy is not the best in terms of speed and stability. Try a more lightweight ROM, like Jackos. Simplicity is also excellent, although it hasn't been updated in a while. Both of these ROMs are more lightweight, and manage memory better than Energy.
Got room for a "me too"? I've said it before. I don't know if the problem is HTC, Windows, or AT&T...or a combination of the three, but I have: Unreliable, painfully slow 3G; frequent dropped phone calls; Internet browser DNS failures; Wi-fi that seems to be just for show; and finally, a phone that is so slow to respond to any screen taps or button pushses that it tests my patience daily. Oh yes, I almost forgot, I have to reset the phone at least every other day and sometimes as often as twice in one day.
I still have ten months on my contract, and then it is goodbye to HTC, ATT, and Windows Mobile. I know you die hards here on the forum say iPhone is for kids and Windows is for business, but for my business, a working phone is what is important, and this ain't it!

If you must go Energy though, stick with the "Reference" builds. It does't have all the apps you never use on it, just the important ones. Runs much better on speed and battery life for me.
Although I will probably go with an android phone next contract cycle, windows mobile 7 (or whatever it's called) is actually quite nice.

Yes, WM7 might indeed be nice. However, in spite of the typical Microsoft promises, there are still few apps for WM 7...just like prior versions of WM. iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. If you don't have one of those, you are SOL.
BTW, avatar28, I just had to do my fifth hard reset since installing ROM 2.nnnn, so I took this opportunity to go back to the original 1.5nnn ROM. I had almost forgotten how much I lost with the "upgrade", not the least of which is the task manager icon on the home screen and the ability to select from All Programs without having to install each one on a button. Yeah, I no longer have a video recorder, but I'll deal with it (LOL)!

You do realize WP7 is closed-source... right? That means not NEARLY as much development and such that you got on the Tilt2/TP2. Get Android and you will be able to customize even more than you did in winmo, and have a stable overclock.

Yeh but i rather get a WP7 than deal with the **** Wm6+ has to offer even if it does have more development. Even if it does, that doesn't entirely mean the phone is going to be very stable in performing.

Android is very stable and is much more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion than WP7. The possibilities with android are so much more vast than WP7. The whole windows phone as a whole is slowly deteriorating and I feel sorry that you don't understand that. It still has hardly any apps compared to Android or even iPhone. You seem like you want a stock operating system though, so I guess if you really want to stay away from modding and customizing your phone, get that 'soon to be dead' WP7.

Like I said, I will most likely go with an android phone next go around - specifically because of the open vs closed source. However - I know of some upcoming things that might also make the win 7 mobile even more of a nice package (for the right consumer). Or maybe it will lead to another release of a new mobile operating platform (ala win 7 trumping 6.5). Time will tell.
To be perfectly honest, I only have the win 6.5 phone because it was free with a 2 year. Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint are currently running a similar deal on win 7 phones. Free is a pretty compelling argument.

It depends on how you order your priorities. In my opinion, my phone is something I use many many times every single day. I want to be able to constantly change it and be excited about it all the time (I got bored with winmo after a while). I just bought a non-contract android phone for around $400 and to me that is worth it, to others who don't care as much about modding and such, it probably wouldn't be worth it.

I don't know that I would say there are very few apps. They just announced the 20k mark at the end of May (doubled in about a month). It's not a lot compared to the 300k or whatever on iOS but a lot of those are basically clones of each other anyways. A lot of iOS and 'Droid apps are just packaged HTML5 anyways and will be easy to port if/when WP7 gets some traction.
I think I may give a different ROM a shot. Something without CHT2 since I think that's some of the problem and I've gotten to where I don't even bother customizing it anymore because of hard resets/reflashes.

I think there is a lot more application development on WP7. But you're right about there being a lot less development of customizations and the like. Maybe with Mango we'll get more adoption and that will help things.
Honestly, I really want a new phone but I'm trying to hold off. I really want to see what Mango and the new version of Android bring to the table and I want some better hardware than the current crop of WP7 offerings. Something with specs similar to the T-Mo G2 maybe.
I have to agree this phone is a disappointment. Part of the problem is that it is underpowered for the software it runs i.e. WinMo/Sense 2.5. I find that a process called GWES keeps expanding over time since last soft reset and consumes a large slab of runtime memory. The effect of this is to make things like the camera really slow to load. I don't know if it is a memory leak but it seems rediculous having a process that doesn't have some restrictions on its memory consumption.
I was having massive problems with Standby Of Death but replacing the SIM card seems to have fixed that much to my surprise.
I have to say that I look enviously at iPhone users who press something on the screen and the response is practically instantaneous compared to the sluggish performance of WM6.5. The WP7 phones are supposed to perform well but I guess the generous minimum specs mandated by MS have a lot to do with that.

I'm sure i made it clear that I prefer a WP7 phone over a WM6, not WP7 over android. I know how android works and that they are an open source, that is not new news. I'm just saying that the tp2 with wimo6 is a joke of a full time business phone. I'm not a full coding developer so I'm not interested in tricking the tp2 that it can perform something when it really can't - or it can't do whatever it's suppose to do well.
Open source is good, but sometimes it sucks that u can come across terrible, buggy apps. Sure they are free and can be fixed but that's where it fails for the consumer. These buggy apps could potentially destroy your phone. And this is the biggest flaw that winmo6 has to offer. it makes sense to just get rid of the whole entire os altogether; the most important fact of what a consumer needs in a phone is one that WORKS as a phone, NOT a developing tool.
I'm sure Microsoft understood this, which is why they are not open source. That's like if nintendo had anyone building their games without any consent from nintendo in doing so. We'd get a lot of crappy buggy games. Plus Microsoft isn't a small company. Having xbox integrated with wm7 plus buying out Skype and working together with nokia for some of their phones is a huge thing for
WP7 - so saying that they will die sometime soon is by far from happening.
Don't think that WP7 will die due to the lack of open source. The most that anyone needs on a phone is to make calls, txt/email msgs, make notes, watch movies, play music and or internet browsing - do we really need many developers to make something that's already integrated on the phone? Plus they have ms office - as a full business worker that's a big plus.

Speech to Text

I unfortunately own the dreaded bugged Dell Venue Pro. On the plus side though, I have gotten to experience the amazing WinMo7 OS. I love it. I will stick with it when I move on to the next phone and just avoid the con-artists known as Dell.
With that said, one of the very few things that has let me down with WinMo7 and the Mango update, is the speech to text feature. I find it ridiculously inaccurate. I would say it works at about a 5% success rate and is so far off most of the time it is comical.
I was curious if everyone else is having great success with this feature or if it is just me (could be something with my voice or even could just be another bug with the Venue Pro Microphone). Would like to hear how the feature is working for everyone else. Thanks.
English is not my native langauge but it get most of my speech correct. So I have no problem with it.

First of all, as a sidenote, it's Windows Phone, not Windows Mobile. Anyways, text to speech worked pretty well the few times I used it. I noticed that the more clear I speak, the better it recognizes what I say. So no dialects, no mumbling.. I barely use it since I couldn't figure out how to use punctuation so it's kinda useless for me.
i was very excited about this at first, until I ran into the same problem. i keep using it occasionally, hoping it will get it right this time... but anything over 2 or 3 words and it always messes something up. i'm even sure to speak slowly and clearly. all it needs to do is mess one word up and its pointless. if i have to go in and correct something, that ends up taking longer than had i just typed in the first place.
Don't u mean windows phone. Also the dell venue pro is great with mango update, but that doesn't erase their past. Speech to text works well enough for me. Not sure what ur doing wrong but I don't have the big problems u state

Yeah... Im not sure what the deal is. I don't have a lisp or anything like that .
Does anyone know if the core of the speech to text is shared with the music recognition feature also? Because that thing is buggy as hell to. For a while I would try to use it on songs and it would come back empty. I was starting to think that they just didnt have those songs in their library. But, then when a song was unrecognized, I would switch over to Shazam. Shazam would indicate what the song was, and if I clicked the Zune icon with in the app, it would take me right to the song in the Zune marketplace, so obviously the problem wasnt that they didn't 'carry' that song.
Other than when I have to use the phone to have it 'listen' and recognize what is being played or said, the OS is AMAZING.
In all honesty, I find the clearer and more diss-tinkt-lee I speak, the less it picks up.
It'll be something like this:
Me: Text (wife)
Phone: texting (wife)
Me: Want, to, get, pizza, tonight?
Phone: Went you bet pizza to knight. You can say send or start over.
Me: Start over.
Me: Wanna get pizzatonight
Phone: Wanna get pizza tonight
I kid you not, it picks up all the "gonnas" and what not. However for things longer than two sentences, it's a crap shoot.
-edit-
My guess is they purposely coded it to pick up more natural sounding speech patterns.
My favorite is when it takes everyday words and censors them because it thinks you drop so 4 letter bombs.
Example:
To Wife: You looked like a million dollars tonight.
What she gets: You looked like a *#&$&#@! tonight.
Goes over real well...
Works for me okay! I like it when its reading texts with "x's" at the end it reads "kisses" its so funny

I'll have to try this.. I wonder if it's true. I was getting frustrated, it seemed like the more deliberate I was the more it ****ed with me.
and I don't get you guys who are saying 'it works good enough'. it either works or doesn't, no? if it doesn't say what you want then it's useless.
I don't bother with speech to text, but what I miss from the old WM 6.5 was MS Voice Command. You can ask "what time is it?"; "what call did I missed?"; "what appointment do I have?", etc.. It would event alert my upcoming appointment by voice! I don't get why MS scraped that and gave us this handicapped voice thing. Why let Apple get all the credit for siri when Voice Command was able do 80% of that 4 years ago?
Don't give Siri too much credit, it was down for hours today....anywho, mine is 90% accurate...sometimes it amazes me that it picked up what I said, but occasionally it will translate some crazy stuff lol.

i'm sorry but more testing and this is atrocious.
my last two messages contained 'soon though i'm a' which was turned into 'sonoma'. SERIOUS?
and then 'eleven' it interpreted as 'lesson'. wrong amount of syllables, not even close.

"soon though I'm a", what was the rest of your sentence? If it was something like "I'm a be at John's house", then that might be your problem. I wouldn't think that urban slang is coded in, making it think you meant something else.
Essentially, Tellme has gotten pretty good for American/British & Aussie accents.
I'm Chinese & my voice is of a higher pitch so Tellme only got it right 50% & assuming the Auto-gain on the Trophy or my Bluetooth headset doesnt attenuate my voice too much.
A Kiwi I know also have the same problem but you know what? It's a lot better now compared to a year ago & the key is to speak naturally.
It's actually working amazingly well for me which is surprising since I have an Australian accent. I find it strange that it's not working too well for you.
Eg, I said 'I'll meet you at the park in 30 minutes but I'll also be stopping for lunch on the way' and it came out as 'I'll meet you at the park in 30 minutes but I'll also be stopping for lunch on my way'. I actually said this quickly (normal conversation speed), and it came out almost perfect. Even with the error (if you could even call it that) the sentence still made perfect sense..
I've found that the slower and clearer i speak the worse it is.
If i just speak normaly to it, it gets it pretty good.
i wonder if this is the issue for me?
are the phone sold with an accent filter?
I'm an Aussie but i live in the UK and i bought my mobile through O2. is there a way to tell the phone to "listen" for an Aussie accent?
I don't think we need something like Siri on WP7, it's a gimmick imo.

it's marketed as a gimmick but there's no doubt its a useful feature. its capabilities are way beyond Tellme where you have to start off with 1 of only 4 keywords to start an action. i'll give it another few years though until anyone puts out a voice system that is truly useful and accurate.
i will give siri extra credit though.. my brother was messing around with it, and even when he gave commands it wouldn't recognize, it would exactly repeat what he said no matter how bizarre or quick he would talk. i'd imagine it must work well for voice to text.

ICS 4.0 Set for Q2 2012? Motherfu-

Well, it's going to be a lengthy wait till we get the official release of ICS.

Now that I've experienced this gorgeous 720 display, I can't go back to any lower, but it seems to me with the way things are going, I wont hesitate ditch LG for any other brand once such resolution is available...
It's a shame, LG, you could've been great...
honest question-
why is this a bad thing? i mean, my phone works fantastically.
sure, i, like you, like to be a first adopter and enjoy leading-edge tech, but what's in ics that's such a leapfrog advancement above and beyond gb 2.3.5 that it's worth ditching a device that performs very very well?
again, honest question, i can't deny i've asked myself this very question. i just can't justify giving up this phone because it won't have the official ics for another 3-6 months-ish.
Well, for starters you and I have different level of acceptance. When I buy a gadget with $600 price tag on it I expect it to be working absolutely flawlessly, perfect, or at least not worse then 1 years old gadget. Nitro out of box might seem fast, at first, but it hiccups, screen and buttons are not very responsive (just tell me how many times you pressed back button and nothing happens, before you realize you have to press exactly at that arrow, which is nearly invisible until you press it (face palm) or when you press something on screen and it takes 1/2-1 sec before something happens? 1.5ghz dual core my ass, excuse my french), compass doesn't work, no notifications through headset (I've been using it successfully on 5 different phones). And if you start installing some basic apps, you'll see how quickly the screen become sluggish, in fact, my 1 year old HTC Inspire with single core 1ghz cpu has better screen response, smooth scroll, just like iphone and it's full with installed apps. Ok, it's could be the apps not optimized for such resolution, but wouldn't you expect hardware to compensate?
Said that I was hoping to see a quick update that hopefully would address all or most of these issues, but it doesn't looks like it's gonna happened anytime soon.
So, for the next half a year or more we stuck with what we got. Yes, yes, we all hope the developers will jump on and we'll see some roms going on, but it's not what I'm talking about, it's the whole official level of support, it's the "lets sell them this half-done product and maybe we'll throw them an update or two a year later" attitude. Other companies probably do the same and some even worse, but c'mon just look at LG Thril, these poor bastards have been expecting GB update back in September, now they have to wait another 6 month!
Of course I'm very disappointed about it.
Also when you use GPS navigation and car charging, this nitro will get very hot and it refuses to charge!
I also have Samsung skyrocket, the phone never get hot like this!
You won't need ICS if we can unlock the bootloader. Why is everybody fussin over ICS?? The custom ROMS would be way better than Stock Android ROMs of any version. Just to prove it to u, my Atrix running on CM7 could do about 85% of the things offered in ICS. When I looked at them showcasing the ICS, I kept telling myself, " I have that, and that, and that as well". Nothing is new, except the face recognition unlock and things intergrated from Honeycomb.
So, in my opinion, big deal about ICS. If it does take LG that long to release the update, then hopefully before the time comes, we can get better ROMs.
You are missing very important things about ICS - optimizations.
It's optimized for HD displays, hardware-accelerated 2D drawings (read as UI). Just this two are enough to be excited about...
@netnerd:
it does get very hot with heavy network usage (navigation uses both GPS and network alot, especially if you enabled any additional layers), however mine haven't gotten to the point of refusing charging, perhaps it's your car charger? If it's output only 1.0A, then it might be not enough, cause the wall adapter that comes with phone is 1.1A.
Also note, the "very hot" feel could be due to the metal plate around the camera which is much better heat conductive then plastic, so you'd feel more heat out of it then without it as on Skyrocket...

this in no way whatsoever describes how the nitro i own functions, i have yet to experience any of the issues you have.
also, i paid $150, not $600.
So, you never experienced any slows down or jittering when scroll apps list or text in other apps? It doesn't delay open any apps for you?
After hard reset everything seems to be smooth, very little jittering in apps scroll, but once some essencial apps get installed, the jittering gets more and more.
The buttons issue, is probably because of unusual layout, but the fact that we can't control lights on them and they almost invisible does make it harder to use.
The $600 is retail price, I payed half of that, but I'm not stuck in the contract. I only mentioned the price just to compare what they ask for and what they actually deliver for that price...

it seems to me that the phone gets snappier as the programs most used get used. sure, there have been slow downs, just now going into the market, all my app icons took a moment to pop on screen. i noticed that.
opera, gmail, all the apps i use pop up pretty dang quick, more often suprising me with their quickness v. slow. the scrolling too, i don't find troublesome. yes, over the past several weeks of getting the phone dialed-in like i like it there have been times that i've noticed this and that but now that i am getting it finalized, it is snappy snappy.
and i do notice that sometimes the launcher does not recognize my screen inputs, but the stock launcher noticed them quite well, but to me that just means the launcher is probably not perfected for such a fine screen.
re: the price. i see. even so, sure seems like a better price tag than the google phone. what's retail there, $800? and no deals, subsidized price is locked at ~$300 + i'd pay $20 more a month at verizon.
for me (i.e. not for everyone ) this phone *seems* to make sense. could be wrong but at the same time, we all know what it's like waiting for that super perfect phone.
I tried to stick with the nitro through January and couldn't do it. This news of pics coming in q2 justifies my decision to return it and wait for the galaxy note lte or galaxy nexus for at&t. Hopefully a few devs come along and release this phone from its shackles.

It's not even confirmed for the Nitro HD, instead LG said it's up to the carriers. It's only confirmed for the international variant, the LG Optimus LTE.

So it's even worse then we thought...carriers will only start thinking rather update or not their devices after LG releases the update...
That's the way it's always worked.

Once it's rooted n unlocked, i dont think it matters if u use the optimus LTE update, does it?
yay for us! LoLoL!!!
I think LG is thinking all they need to do is put out a phone with monster specs and that's it, they're done. If it were a few years ago, before people knew that smartphones had an OS let alone know what 'Android' was, then yeah you don't have to care too much about OS updates.
But this is today and the Nitro is a competitor to the Galaxy Nexus. You better believe that EVERY OS update that comes out, the Galaxy Nexus is going to be the first to get it...So any 'decent' competitor should up it's game and follow suit closely behind. And 6 months later ain't closely behind.
I'm starting to talk myself out of the Nitro. My true love and want was the Galaxy Note but I got tired of waiting for a US release and jumped on the Nitro instead. But the funky menu/search button, no indicator LED, bad compass, sometimes sluggish performance, etc...
Unfortunately for us there are no rules or regulations how manufactures should handle their products. That's why they more focus on creating new models rather then supporting already sold, maybe it's a good business, but this actually explains why so many people prefer overpriced Apple products...In fact after playing a bit with iPhone 4s on xmas, I'd be sold for it too if I wasn't interested in doing something myself to phone system as we can on android platform.
im sticking to this phone for now, no matter wat. I will make it work with wat it has, n im sure, in a couple of months or so, we will have much more things with this phone. I mean seriously, this phone is only 23 days old, and we make it seem like this has been out for months and has no hopes of improving. Give it a break and show some patience guys. We are even damn lucky to get a permanent root so easily. look at the rezound, who's been out longer than the Nitro; it still doesn't have a permanent root. And in 23 days, we have the support of a couple of devs trying to get us CWM and several great users working hard figuring out the innards of this phone. To give u an idea, Tenfar did not even come out with CWM for the Atrix until April, almost 2 months down the road.
So you know wat, I'm not giving up on them. They've all worked hard to help us have a better phone, and I am not leaving them and their hard work to vain. I know it's about money and being stuck with a phone for 2 years or so, but hey, that's the price we pay as early adopters to technology. Want something proven and guaranteed, wait a couple of months when everyone already has the phone.
That's my 2 cent on the current situation; about ICS, about Unlock bootloader, about this and that. Things will improve in weeks to come, as long as we stick together and help, instead of complaining on how the phone is lacking this or that.
p.s. always remember, the SG II has a much lower resolution with same CPU, thus performing under less stress. And the Galaxy Nexus has a pentile AMOLED screen, again also using less power thus stressing the CPU less. That's where this phone is getting hit with lag and battery issue.
