I've been reading around, and have seen that some people have been able to increase the radio power on their phones leading to increased bandwidth... Has anyone successfully done this? If so, how can I do this?
wow...i didn't even know that was possible...i always thought that was controlled by the network...as in the towers or something. then again where there's a will..there's a way
I'm not sure about hacking a Radio? I know that there are different Radio's available that allow different reception\battery life\GPS fix, there are a few radio's out for the Dash\Excalibur but not as much choice as many other models mainly due to fact not as many official builds or people porting them from other models.

I hate reviving dead threads... but a quick explanation which might spur interest. This would be plausible for any American phone that isnt running the T-mobile network. Radio signal runs off the towers, when a cellular company increase cellular tower power they release a patch OTA (most times) or on the web page changing the current radio software to the updated radio software. Sooo I know that tmo has nothing new i checked with a tmo rep today but at&t might be an option worth looking at.

Hi stylez,
you´ve spoken about some wm 6.5 roms, wich habe different battery life and reception. Could you tell me a rom, with has a better battery-lifetime than the last 3vo-rom (wich is absolutely perfect but has a battery-lifetime of less than one day. )
Thanks

I have been looking into buying an HTC Diamond from Telus, but have kept hesitent due to a few major reasons: poor phone quality, reception, and dropped calls, and sluggish, slow interface.
Browsing the web for feedback and solution, I found an ad on the web offering to update the ROM which would improve in these areas. The person said it would turn diamond from triband to quad band, significantly improving reception, increase the speed of the pda, and the other interesting options. The only problem with that was that he was charging $100 dollars to do this. Thankfully, I discovered this forum, so now there is hope that I can tweak the Diamond. But it seems there is not one definite rom update, but a few. So my question is, do they all provide the basic features of increasing the processing/ display speed, and reception on top of other customized features, or is there a particular one the dude could have been talking about.
I really like the look of this phone, and it will be my first PDA. I don't want to get into some **** though on a 3 year contract. I am not noobish when it comes to these things; in fact, i enjoy messing around with my phone and computer -- customized both quite suitably.
If anyone has a ROM in mind that he or she uses very successfully, is very satisfied, please post it here and link the specs. Any advice, recomendations are welcome. I don't care much for music player, got an iPod, but compatability, accessibility, speed, reliabbility, and battery are very important. Naturally I am not looking for a mini laptop, so the phone aspect comes foremost important. Basically, I am trying to avoid restarting it every 10 minutes, rebooting, all that, which will just add on to the stress.
I also noticed some talk about Manila. What is it exactly? Is it just a theme, or something more. Well, any help is sincerely valued. Thank you.

Hello.
It seems to me you have a lot of reading to do and a lot of catching up.
Bear in mind that all of us in here clearly take the risk of loosing warranty, since all the roms are home made and not official from htc. This means that it is solely your responsibility if something goes wrong.
I respect the fact that you are not noobish but for PDA stuff treat yourself that you are noobish and read from scratch ( friendly advice to avoid probs)
If you want a suitable rom for you it comes down to you and only you to take the risk and start trying what is availlable.
No one can tell you what is suitable for you and if it will work or not etc etc., quality and functionality is totally subjective
I repeat that if you want to try you must get used to the fact of warranty is void with these roms.
So lets begin.
1. understanding what you do is important so here you are: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=416211 THIS IS THE BIBLE
2. Roms: look in the forum for the varius roms, see the specs, progs, if you like it try, if not, try another one
keep in mind the above link. read it carefully if you do not want to end up with a bricked device. follow instruction carefully
Finally, i have been flashing roms for a year now in 3 htc devices i have come across and never ever ended up with a brick, however, no warranty.
and again there are ways to get the device back to original state for warranty reasons, you will get there in the forum, but get to know the stuff well and understand them befor you do anything.
Lastly, always read before you ask since most what you need, there is an answer in here.
I hope i have helped you as much as i could and i hope you will get your device up and running with the stuff in here, thanks to the amazing hard work and knowledge of the members/senior members/mods/admins/cooks etc (i hope i have not left anyone out )
Greetings
Keep in mind that *almost all* of the ROMs available here on the diamond forum are for the GSM version of the diamond, NOT the CDMA version (which is what the TELUS model is). Good luck with you research.

Hello,
Well i have finally gone and joined the elite ranks of owning a phone with the Windows Mobile OS.
Usually been a blackberry user who went to the HTC Magic and has just given up on the Google Android OS (is that a dirty word around here?).
So i purchased the HTC Touch Pro2 based on a recomendation from a very jealous workmate. Am still waiting for delivery but have a few queries he thought i should ask on here to get a good varied level of responses.
1. HTC Touch Pro2 - Good phone?
2. Vodafone ROM - I believe the ROM vodafone use (UK) screws the phone up a bit. So those who use Vodafone and still have their ROM installed... what do you think of it?
3. ROM - Any recomendations on the best ROM? I understand their are many out there and all do various things but just trying to get a view of what people prefer.
4. SPB Shell - a must have?
Thats really it i guess... just trying to get a feel of the OS and issues before i start tinkering.
Thanks!
Welcome to forums
1. Yes!! one of the best actually!
2. Before flashing, be shure to learn how and to identify if your Rhodium is CDMA or GSM
3. There is no such thing as the best ROM, what is best for me could not be for you. Try the more you can till you get your best.
Check ROM section and see the threads with more reads/posts this way you´ll have an idea what members prefer more
4. I do not like spb, I´m quite happy with Manila/Sense 2.1, no need to install another external heavy app
Read, Search, Respect and Enjoy!
HI all ..i just ordered tp2 from ebay since its yet not launched here in india.actually there was one sprint phone and one unlocked ohone listed there ..sicne i wanted 3.5 mm jack and the fact is i quite did not like the silver key board on the unlocked phone, i opted for sprint...
my question is how do i upgrade it to win mo 6.5..the seller says
"If you want I can send you the 6.5win mob file along with the stock (original ROM) and the procedure to upgrade and if not happy then downgrade to original rom."
but i read on web that sprint has not yet relaesed 6.5 rom pls advise.
also how is the video and audioi playback of the device since i prefered it over samsung omnia i 8000 which has a oled screen..actually i was tired of holding devices to my nose to watch videos and wanted a device which i can put on table and watch vdo music etc..
Your sprint Rhodium is CDMA, so this is the section where you can find a 6.5 ROM:

Welcome Paul Good to see somebody thinking ahead about things like this!
1) I think a lot of people here will agree that the TP2 is the pinnacle of a "fully-capable" smartphone...it's definitely the best of the QWERTY-enabled hardware available today, and will probably remain so until/unless they eventually release a HD2 or equivalent with a hardware keyboard (...heaven willing!)
2) I've never used the Vodaphone ROM, but most carrier-specific ROMs are lacking in some way, and a large number of the ROM's available here will work regardless of which carrier you have...as long as you use one for the correct NETWORK type (which I believe is CDMA for Voda). Often the aftermarket ("cooked") ROMs developed here are based on carrier-issued ROM, then "improved" in any number of ways.
3) As orb3000 said above, there's no real way to subjectively recommend a "best" ROM...each has it's own pros and cons that have to be weighed against the needs/preferences of the user. The best place to start on that is to read THIS and THIS thread on flashing ROMs, then read over the threads related to each ROM that's been cooked/released here. Again, just make sure you're looking at ones that are for CDMA networks.
4) SBP Shell is definitely a great program, and can do a lot for the UI...but like most here I happen to believe that you can get more bang for your buck with the custom ROMs available here. Again, it's best to just try some out (including running a trial of SPB), and see what fits you best
THIS thread will help clear up the differences between windows mobile versions 6.5 and 6.5.3, which you'll see a lot of here.
So, you've got a lot of reading to do between now and when your new TP2 arrives! Once you get through all that, the next thing to learn is how to install/apply the fixes and tweaks available on XDA...usually that's done through ".cab files" (when you're lucky), sometimes through executable files, and sometimes through good old-fashioned registry edits by hand. I get the feeling you'll be learning about all that stuff quickly enough
2 last pieces of advice...first, make friends with the search function here in the forums...its often more efficient than just posting a question, and will save you from the backlash that can happen when someone asks a question with answers that are readily available around here. Lastly, even though the ROMs and other tweaks here are produced out of a labor of love, most any and all developers will accept donations (however small) to help offset personal expenses related to the time and effort they put into the wonderful gifts they drop on us regularly here. Donations are always voluntary, but once you find a ROM or other bits that work well for you, it's always good form to express your appreciation via some kind of token like that.
Good luck! Your friend has no idea what jealousy is about until he sees the look on your face when you start playing with your new toy!!

If you bought a Sprint-branded phone, then it's CDMA, and there's no changing that. You can't "unlock" a phone to switch between GSM and CDMA...so if your network is GSM, this phone is no good to you as a...phone

Actually, that's not true. See, the funny thing about the Rhodium is that there are no exclusively CDMA versions. Instead, there are the RHOD400 and RHOD500 models, which are GSM/CDMA hybrids. People refer to them as CDMA devices because of the fact they operate on CDMA networks by default, but they have full GSM capability, and can use regular GSM SIM cards.
dheerpat: The device you have bought works on GSM, but it will be referred to as a CDMA device on this forum, and you should use CDMA ROMs on it, despite the fact it also works on GSM. You should be able to use a Vodaphone SIM with it as long as you put the device in GSM mode, and if the SIM doesn't work, you can unlock the device so it will work.
phew!!!!! missed a beat there..paid 500 bucks for it afterall

Hi, thanks for the response - and thanks to everyone else who has responded (aprt from those who hijacked my post lol).
I wont be using CDMA as i believe this is mainly for the US not the UK? So my geeky mate tells me, we only use GSM in England? Is he wrong and we don in fact use CDMA?
He also looked very shocked when i repeated that a lot of people dont go for the SPB Shell... he said its awesome and im stupid if i dont get it... yeah well i got a HTC Touch Pro2 and you dont pal... lol
I will look at the ROM's (already started) and will 'play' with a few that look interesting. I presume the SPB shell will work with any ROM and not wipe out any functionality? If i go for the SPB Shell...
Quite comfortable with the use of .cab files.... may not be so sure with registry tweaks but ill learn...

Yeah, SPB Shell used to be the best option for customizing the interface on winmo devices, but that was before HTC introduced, and have since refined, the TouchFLO3D interface. There's also a ton more user-generated tweaks and such that have sprung up since then (as you clearly see now).
I don't know about the GSM vs CDMA carriers in the UK or Europe, I'd always understood that GSM was dominant, but there were CDMA carriers there too...but I really have no idea for sure.
Well finally got my phone... its GSM....
Got the SPB shell - liking it.
Only issue i have is not being able to send MMS but trying to sort out.
So far so good - will play more once more confident - not bricking my phone for anyone lol
I have been wondering, what is the difference between a "Radio" for the Desire against an "RIL".
All along, coming in and out of ROMs, the dev's suggestion would always be to "flash the suggested radio" - for what could be observed as the best battery life, as well as getting certain things to work (camera, etc).
And all of a sudden, suddenly I begin to see things involving "RIL"s. Case point: here, and here here where there is flashing the RIL along side the radio. (for better battery etc).
So I need to know (just for curiosity's sake, I want to learn more): whats the difference between a radio, something that I've always thought influences the phones hardware and signal (which also means battery consumption); and RILs? which based on Wikipedia (maybe not the most reliable source) says that;-
wikipedia said:
The Android Open Source Project provides a Radio Interface Layer (RIL) between Android telephony services (android.telephony) and the radio hardware.
It consists of a stack of two components: a RIL Daemon and a Vendor RIL. The RIL Daemon talks to the telephony services and dispatches "solicited commands" to the Vendor RIL. The Vendor RIL is specific to a particular radio implementation, and dispatches "unsolicited commands" up to the RIL Daemon.

Or have I been oblivious to the fact that RILs have been packaged in the Radio zips/imgs all along? (for example: 5.11.05.27 radio with 5.11.05.27 RIL)
If so, what would happen if I flashed a different RIL version on top of a different radio version? (example: 5.11.05.27 radio with 5.11.05.14 RIL)?
Thanks for taking the time to read this wall of text!

Le bump.
Still curious. Would like a more professional opinion.
Probably the last time I'm going to bump this.
It is amazing how people reply to threads where the OP has done almost zero research, while in threads like these I make an effort to understand more about what I'm doing, instead of being a "follower" and get 0 replies.
A Radio stores the low level firmware for the desire's hardware (display, wifi, bluetooth, and everything else). Newer Radios contain newer firmware.
A RIL is like a driver pack that is optimized to work with a specific radio. So if you are running a certain Radio, say Radio XYZ, then for the best performance (ie wifi signal strength, battery life, raw performance), you would want the corresponding RIL (which would happen to be the RIL for XYZ.
Running a specific Radio's RIL is not necessary, but recommended.
A word on bumping - There are lots of knowledgable people here on XDA; perhaps it is unwise to 'diss' them simply because you haven't received a reply in under a day. Relax, someone will always answer your question, except (in the case of this thread) when the question being asked has been answered before, multiple times (i know this as i have answered it myself a couple of times).
However, a quick google wasen't too fruitful, so it is understandable that you posted this question.
Josh.
Yes, I'm sorry, I'm venting a bit, not dissing (hopefully). But it's been about 2 days lol (GMT?).
Thank you for not ripping out my jugular, Josh And thank you for your answer.
Anyway, if an RIL should be used as a facilitating piece of software/driver to complement Radios - like peanut butter & jelly - to further increase it's performance, how come not a lot (based on major custom ROM threads? I've only seen a couple) of emphasis is placed on using a complementing RIL with its Radio?
Also, Radios seem to be more readily available on xda (a plethora of versions) as compared to RILs (have only seen one).
Wouldn't hosting RILs on xda also drastically reduce users' complaints for "oh no, my battery life is horrible"? Or is the real situation actually more complicated than that?
Unless RILs are actually in together with the Radio .img? (which might render some user's advice of flashing a complementing RIL to its radio a bit redundant)
I remember seeing this trustworthy post from Lennyuk

Duly noted.
Now, this will be something interesting to poke around with when I have the time...
Be careful, as you probably understood, there is a significant chance to kill your phone by playing with the radio and RIL.
On the other hand, RIL flashes can be easily be reversed by restoring to a nandroid backup. Thus, doesn't this make flashing RILS less risky than flashing radios? Why the dire warning, then?
It's true that flashing a RIL is less risky than flashing a radio.
But as pointed above flashing a RIL does not benefit you much, on the contrary it is likely to cause issues. I think there is no clear motive for doing it.
I am not trying to scare people, just want to make them aware of the consequences it could have, so they don't plunge into the more serious stuff without no knowledge and understanding.
Thanks 3722 and aidfarh

Nice thread!
Thanks to the op for raising the question and for the answers ofcourse
Hi Everyone,
As an individual that has recently migrated from the Hero forums where radio flashes are recommended on a willy nilly basis to "solve" common problems (such as GPS or wifi issues), I have to ask, why is the attitude on the opposite side of the spectrum here? I'm open to technical explanations or anything else that may be relevant.
On the Hero side of things, I noticed that most bricks were products of user error. Considering that HTC released both a GSM and CDMA version of the device (and naming them exactly the same), many unsuspecting users would brick by flashing a CDMA radio on a GSM Hero. In other cases, impatient users would pull the battery during the flashing process -- all while unaware of the consequences.
So, I'd like to hear different opinions on this seemingly contentious issue (as I do see users recommending radio flashes in light of the warnings from developers to not touch the radio at all).
Thank you.
Anybody recommending flashing radios on a "willy nilly basis" are flippin' retards. Doesn't matter if your phone is a 32A (Hero/Magic), 32B (Dream/Magic), or a Vision.
The risks are as follows;
1) An incorrect or incomplete flash WILL render the hardware "bricked".
2) A radio that is incompatible with the hardware or the SPL *WILL* render the hardware "bricked".
Go into the DREAM forums and count just how many people bricked their phones due to something really stupid, like incompatibility with the SPL.... there is always a chance that a new radio will be incompatible with an old SPL. Especially since there are FOUR DIFFERENT SPLs available for Vision.... US/International shipping SPLs, US/International ENGINEERING SPLs. Note that the ENGINEERING SPLs carry older version numbers than the SHIPPING SPLs, so new radios will NOT be made to have compatibility with engineering SPLs in mind.
Is there someone out there that can help clarify the proper way to determine the correct radio for each Desire Z that is out there? This would be the biggest help to all. Education of the proper procedure and the correct radios to use would be more of an asset than having everone scare each other with tales of the bricked phone! If we had an accurate listing for each phone with the MD5 of the files involved there would not be nearly as many bricked phones. I have no doubts the Mods would sticky it for us also.
This is a site that we all come to to learn and I am sure we all enjoy experimenting with our phones and want to do it as safely as possible.
I currently use an Inspire 4g and it took me 7 radios before I found the one that worked to my satisfaction with the rom I am using in the area of the world that I live in. I found it, now I leave it alone.
Why am I putting my .02 in you may ask? I am waiting for a desire Z that I bought on ebay to arrive so I can experiment with it as a spare phone. I just sold 2 Captivates that were spares to get the DZ. I would love to have an accurate source of information that I can further my own education.
I do not have the knowledge to do this or I would but I am sure there are some people that are a lot more intellegent than I that can.
Sorry to be so long winded but I wanted to make sure I did not come across sounding pushy. Just a thought to help all concerned.

Every phone sold in regular mobile phone shops on this earth is provided with the correct radio for the region where it is sold. As in a closed box with EMEI numbers and all the stuff on it. If you live in the outback of Australia and buy (through Ebay) a phone originated for Estonia then you could be in for a surprise.

If you live in the outback of Australia and buy (through Ebay) a phone originated for Estonia then you could be in for a surprise.

That is exactly my point.
There are a lot of people that for one reason or another WILL change their radio. Why not make it so all that do are educated on the proper way to do it and have a correct listing of the proper radio for each device with the coresponding MD5 to minimize the issues? Is this not part of what xda is all about? IMHO it will help all concerned.

New to this device and, for the 1st time I find myself in XDA with a forum with all the different Verizon, AT&T and so on version of my device (previously had only devices that would not show these options).
Now I know this question may sound sort of idiotic, but one has to learn somehow: All the different roms listed in the specific carriers areas would not work in the "standard" international version of this device?
I ask this because, compared to most other devices I see that the choice of roms is very, very limited. So i thought that, being able to choose also from the carrier-specific areas, one would have more choice.
Thanks

I'm sure someone will be able to provide a more detailed and accurate explanation, but generally you don't want to flash anything not specifically made for your device. At the least you could have connectivity issues, at worst, a bootloop and/or brick depending on the situation.
There are some instances where flashing other variants software is OK, but its not the norm, and should not be assumed you can flash any, just because its OK to flash one.
Hopefully someone will jump in and point out which ones if any are OK for you to use.

I should have probably added that the question is inherently stupid, because, if it were easy or even simply not "dangerous", the sections would not be separated! But it is always better to ask, even if sometimes you risk of appearing very stupid! Sometimes, by simply asking though I found out pretty surprising things
Thanks for lending a hand mate :good:
