Does anyone know if the is a possability of a work around so we can view BBCi Player without having Wifi Connection.
The HTC Streaming Player is happy to play video with the 3G connection but without having the Wifi Connected you cannot press play from the BBCi Player Page.
It would be great if there was a way round this. Any Ideas?
I seem to remember connecting with wifi initially then and being able to access over 3g once in the session - but need to corroborate this later.

Yeah I have done this but what if you are somewere where youcan't get wifi. You can't get past the BBCi player web page.
Does that qualify as a download on uk phone tarrifs?

Don't really know what you mean but its just streaming! you'd only want to do this is you had an unlimited data bolt on!
I really hope someone figures this out, it's doing my nut in on the train If i'm near a wifi connection i can most likely watch it on a larger PC!
Regardless, i'd Love to be able to watch iPlayer over the 3G network!
Me also, like you say if I have wifi I have a laptop.
Isn't there any developers out there interesting in this problem?
used to be able to use iplayer over hsdpa using the samsung user agent spoof but then one day i loaded up the site and it wouldn't work. said needed to connect to wifi. really annoying. it must be something bbc have changed at their end.
Yeah its wierd, I hope someone can figure out how to get round it. Although I am not as bothered as I was as I have just invested in a slingbox pro which is awsome.
Slightly off topic, but richardiv, can I ask you what upload speed you get with your broadband?
It's just that I'm looking at getting a slingbox, but am a little concerned that my broadband doesn't achieve a high enough upload speed for it to function properly - but a slingbox and the Touch HD seem a match made in heaven ........ on paper!!!
Thanks

I am o2 broadband and get about 12meg downstream, I am not at home right now so I can't tell you exactly but I reckon its around 1-2meg upstream. Thats a pure guess though. I will look later and let you know exactly
Slingbox works great on the HD, although the max res is 320x240 on the slingplayer so it doesn't give a total full screen, you get black space on the left and right when in fullscreen mode, still not enough to put me off though.

Just looked
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,213 / 12,980
Mmmmm - your upload speed is about 5 times that of mine!!! Pretty certain the picture quality I'd receive would be vastly inferior to yours.
Thanks for the info.

5x wow, you must be miles away from the exchange. Have you looked at the min specs for it? it says "256 Kbps Upstream Network Speed Recommended (higher upstream network speeds yield higher quality video)"
I'm not sure of my distance from the exchange - need to look into it as I didn't realise how particularly poor the results were, until I saw yours!!!

I am pretty close to my exchange but its the ADSL2+ that makes the big difference. It doubles the speed of what you can get on ADSL2. only o2 use it at the moment and possibly SKY but definatly not BT and the rest.
Ah, good to know - especially as I've just gone to O2 with my 'phone - so it could be worth looking at a new ISP in the very near future. Thanks for your help.

No Problem its also cheaper if you have an o2 contract, I pay £9.76 I think.

Hello ladies, gents, killer droids and aliens.
A somewhat long time lurker finally decided to register myself
Anyway, it seems quite likely that I'll pull trigger on one Desirable droid in a near future.
But I have to know couple of things before I dive in head first into the world of droids.
So if any of you could answer those questions, it would be... in the word of Borat, "Very nice" Here goes nothing!
1. Is it possible to browse files in my PCs on my LAN via WLAN from desire?
2. If so, is it possible to stream files (mp3s and avi most likely) from there to be played on desire?
3. Lastly, can desire handle WPA2-PSK?
Cheers!
In answer to your first two, yes (using EStrongs File Explorer, although I'm sure other apps will do it too) and a hesitant yes. Hesitant because I use the Subsonic media server to do just that but that might not be what you're after. Not sure if anything else can do it as I haven't tried. Subsonic is incredibly easy to set up though, and a one-time donation gives you Android streaming for life.
Not sure about the third as my home uses standard WPA for legacy reasons. I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't though.
Hey thanks for a quick answer!
Hm that subsonic seems like it's only meant for music and not for movies and such hmm...
Well the reason I asked about WPA2 is that my other handhelds such as DS and PSP aren't supporting it in the first place (which is a kind of bummer, but I will never lower security for play stuff online in any case)
Yes to number 3.. i use that encryption at home and the desire connects no problem...

Ah yes, sorry, Subsonic is just for music, but it does that music very well!
Can't help with video streaming, but it wouldn't surprise me to see something that does it. There's already the Youtube and Beebplayer apps so it can't be hard to do the same for LAN based videos.
Thanks micks & Noiz!
Well, you can come quite far with couple of gigs of music (besides I already have iPod nano) but TV series and such are bit bigger than mp3s you know? So I wasn't all that sure if I wanted to transfer everything to the phone.
BTW are there any competent program which can run divx without any hitch? or is the "convert the avi file to something else" the way to go?
ATM converting to mp4 with x264 is the way to go. unfortunately.
I recall reading something about somthing, like "Divx playback out of the box" and that kind of fluff regarding Desire before...
Was it pure 100% BS then? .... sigh ....

BS? No.
Available out of the box? No.
Coming "soon" to an OTA update near you? Yes.
"soon" IE.... next year?
I've seen the slow update on the Hero, so I won't be holdning my breath on this.
(The very reason I didn't go for Hero in the first place, painfully slow updates)

I really wish I could be more specific, but "soon" is as close as it gets.. Hence putting it in quotes.
For now, I'd convert using something like Handbrake. Not an ideal solution as you always lose some of the quality when cross converting, but it's the best solution for the moment.
Yeah I understand that, that's the reason I asked "next year?"
Well, I guess the quality itself won't bother me, after all, it's just on 3.7inch screen.
The main "trouble" as I see is that, it takes such tremendious time converting files.
I mean it takes more time to convert file than show itself you know?
The reason I stopped watching stuff on my PSP, it just took way too much time.
the one worry i'd have about streaming is data usuage... if your on 3g etc.. if you have wi fi handy then great.. but i'd imagine streaming over 3g would eat data quite quickly
Oh I was talking about while I'm on my own network.
So no worries there. Thank you for your concern tho.
But your post reminds of me something, but is kinda OT, should I start a new thread about that, or should I keep going here?
Since nobody's protesting, I'll just go ahead and ask it.
I feel a bit torned about how much data plan I'll be using.
I will be checking and sending around 10 mails avg a day, maybe some net surfing (nothing heavy duty) maybe couple of youtube vids, no twitter or facebook.
Will 500mb/month suffice or will I use it up within couple of days? LOL
I srsly have no idea, so any insight will be appreciated!
well i have 50 megs per day (dont ask irish plans are $hite) actually its a pay as you go contract.. 50 megs a day for 99 cents.. never go over that to be honest.. i have email client on and browse the web a bit.. and market place.. wouldnt watch video etc or do streaming unless i'm on wireless network... i think unless your doing streaming or sending large emails you'd do well to use 500 in a month.. i know guys who are on 250mb for a month and they say it doesnt them fine..

I think it really depends on your usage. I suggest a data monitoring app such as 3G Watchdog. Run it for a few days and it'll give you a good guage as to how much data you're using.
Well micks, when you think about it you have 50mb a day!
that's total sum of 1.4 gig per month!
So it's like 3 times more than I was thinking about after all.
Fatman, true, however, the provider here are sneaky bunch who allows custmers upgrade on plan, but not downgrade!
Choises choises, just way too many choises tbh.
I have to decide if I gonna go for Legend or Desire in the first place.
I mean Legend got some seriously sexy outershell! But desire shines with raw poweeeerrr.
I'm just asking myself why HTC didn't make legend shell with desire internals!
What can it do? I was going to activate it on Sprint, but its way too expensive. I decided to just get an HTC Maple on the SERO plan.
So what can this do? I have it controlling my music on the PC already, but I don't know what else I can do with it. So far I keep either this or my iPhone4 in my pocket for use as a:
Music player
Flashlight
Music switcher
Camera
Web Browser
Game player (rather Doodle Jump player)
Clock
What else should I make it do?
Isn't the maple a Windows mobile device? Geeze...
How about a paperweight?
What else would you need it do...? Short of controlling your car and printing money.
if you got a maple, why are you posting here? do you just have an unactivated evo?
The Maple is indeed WM. I hated the phone until I got my Droid stolen and was pleased by the battery life that it had, and I realized it I didn't hate it at all, I did prefer the older stupid-smartphone for various reasons, it works better as a phone to me anyways and I always preferred the keyboard to a touchscreen. I do have an unactivated Evo that I don't think I'll use for cellular service and I'd like to make the best of it. I realize that its like castrating the phone, but I really don't know what else to do with it. Is there a way to forward texts to it and reply from my Evo?
You could just give it to me and I'd make really good use of it.
I can't give it away, I already spent like 100 bucks on it fixing and stuff.
why did you buy this instead of the new itouch? why are you in the Evo forums without a real service providing Evo?
This is dumb
Because it was on sale? I bought it and an iPhone since they were bundled. Why are you so mad? Ignore me if you don't have anything useful to say.

Haha, I think I would have to convert a lot of videos!
Download CoPilot via WiFi and you can use that offline, just download the maps on to a SD card and you're golden!
I use CoPilot all the time during road trips and is awesome!
Also, not sure what area you're in but if you're in an area that has MetroPCS you can activate the EVO on their service. I know in Jacksonville, Florida they had this thing where they would charge you 10 dollars for flashing your phone over to MetroPCS as long as it had a clean ESN.
Man, I'm confused. Are you planning on using it for some of the things it's intended to do? Or are you planning on using a crappy WinMo phone?

The medialink HD arrived this morning, as it was a free gift courtesy of phones4u. I played around with it for 2 hours, and this is what I think:
It was incredibly easy to set up and use, it even came with a stand so you can stick it on top of your HDTV. So that is a nice little bonus!
The actual product itself is MUCH smaller than I thought it would be, I thought it would be at least the size of the One X, but no, it's pretty damn small!
One thing I noticed, is that when playing an intense game like Blood and glory, it stutters for the for 2 minutes of gameplay, then it seems to run like a hot knife through butter, I found this was the same with web browsing too!
HD content and games overall look amazing, HTC actually got something right first time for once! I really recommend this product to ANYONE with a One X! Any questions more than welcome of course

Hi, Got mine this morning so thought I would add my own review.
Agree with OP, much smaller than I expected, making it very portable. Will upload some pictures shortly. Its made of plastic, but has a good weight to it, to make it not feel cheap. The box it came in was rubbish though!
To clarify questions I originally had -
It needs a WiFi connection to work
It needs to be plugged in to a power supply. Cable Provided
It uses HDMI. Cable provided
Minor lag after initial start up, but then ok.
Quick Buffer rates.
At the minute (I've only played around with it for an hour or so) but my feelings are its OK. I'm not blown away by it just yet and here is why.
Didn't want to connect initially despite me following the 5 simple steps to the letter. They really are simple so might say something about me! To the point I was going to send it back. Eventually though it worked, although i did exactly what I had originally. (Thinking it through it may be due to me having several broadband connections in my house, it may have switched midway through pairing)
As OP said, the first minute or 2 you experience random lag for 1, maybe 2 seconds at a time, after that its all good.
If I am playing a video, i cant see it on the phone as the image freezes on the first film image, although it plays fine on the TV.
It didn't want to work with MX PLayer, so had to use stock for viewing recordings and downloaded videos.
I don't have any "True" HD content on my phone yet (700mb stuff ;P), but this highlights the lack of quality that you don't originally see on the phones screen. Netflix for example, although picture is good on the phone, it is clearly a "stream" on the TV as the image is pixelated slightly. ESPN goals is the same (although on phone its not great, on TV is clearly worst).
If the phone content is in HD, games etc (I assume same with films), it looks sweet, and ignoring the start up lag it works really well for games.
In summary (and I don't want this to sound like im knocking it), I think it is more of a party piece, rather than a day to day item you would use. Great for sharing pictures or videos you have taken with family/friends rather than them passing your phone around the room.
Its very quick, images/video buffer very fast and play within seconds. Apart from MX Player, everything I have asked it to display on the TV it has, so there are no copyright restrictions that I can see at this stage, unlike AppleTV.
A perfect accessory for those that travel alot or spend a lot of time in hotel rooms.

There is about 0.2 second lag if you are using it for hardcore gaming. I just thought I would point that out.
It is a fantastic concept and well executed....other than the horrible shiny black casing that comes slightly marked and gets further marked by breathing on it.
It uses your Wi-Fi network. The phone somehow informs the media link of your WiFi network and password. I am not sure how it achieves this. After doing so, the Media link has an IP address. It will automatically update its firmware when you are not using it. So further improvements for some of the hesitancy that some of reported may come.
But it truly is plug and play.

And it knows your WiFi password and stuff due to the fact it is only transmitting the One X display to the TV, if it did need a password you would surely need a HDTV with internet capabilities too.

I've heard Android Auto usually doesn't work on Huawei phones and unfortunately its one of the few things I do need working on my phone. (Not just the App running, but more that is connects to my car successfully)
I'm in the US and will want to make sure Android Auto is functional before I pull the trigger. It looks like it has good LTE band support for AT&T so that i usually the other concern but I'm sure that is going to work fine.
If any of you US folks can confirm Android Auto is working I would really appreciate it, Thanks!

Does it connect to the car right away when you first plug in the cable?
I have a Xiaomi Mi Max 3 now and the connection to the car sometimes takes like 5 -10 minutes..

Mine is pretty instant.. Both my cars have a little thing that plays in the beginning so it gives the phone about a 5 head start but its usually there by the time the animation finishes.

And your on the Chinese version?, so you had to manually install all the Play Services?
I think i would just end up going with the Global version, so I think that's already all baked in.

There is a ton of misinformation floating around. Chinese version comes with services baked in. All its missing is google play store and certain google apps like gmail, android auto, hangouts, calender, and others. Its like you installed pico gapps for a rom. Just the basics included. But services and calendar sync and such were already baked in.

Oh that's good to know thank you. Certainly not normal for Chinese phones.
If i'm getting one shortly tho, I'm guessing I should just get the Global version anyways?

If the price is the same and such I'd just grab the global. If its not that's up to you then whether you can stand the differences. I got mine the day of release from a lady who I know that came back from Shanghai that day. She grabbed my phone on the way to the airport for me from a Huawei Shop in Shanghai so I paid release day price of $880 w the case. For me that was worth it given the vendors are charging more on top of that. So I "deal" with the china problems. Notification are delayed but I found a setting that lets you tell it to not kill the background work so as long as I don't accidentally close it myself my apps that are important run in the back ground. You "can't change the launcher". You'll have people say BUT YOU CAN JUST USE GESTURES! but that isn't changing the launcher to me. They will be releasing a fix for that but I believe that affects global and china. Biggest thing for me past that is the notification stuff which I believe I've fixed as so far it's responsive.

I've had a few Xiaomi and Huawei phones in the past so I am fairly familiar with the hoops you have to jump through to disable the weird task killer stuff and get notifications working. But yes, I'd certainly want notifications from apps other than the build in ones to be pretty real time. So I think I'm ok with that.
Can't change the launcher? they block installing of any third party launcher? While not a deal breaker, I am certainly accustomed to using Nova launcher. But if It's being fixed I guess that's ok too.
The only other major issue for me I've had on the Mi Max 3 is Video Chat apps. I use Line and Skype and the other person cannot hear me consistently. Audio keeps dropping in volume and breaks up, makes video chatting unusable. I am able to get around it by using WhatsApp (No idea why that works and the others don't)
Have you done any video chatting on the phone by chance?
How are you making out with the LTE bands in the US? It seems like the band list for this phone covers most of AT&T...
Thank you for all the help.

You can install them and run them you simply can't make them default. I've not done video chatting but honestly I don't like to do it but I'll say if the other cameras are anything to look up to your going to be 100% fine. I get full 4g lte its just missing band 30 but my phone seems to sit on band 2 all the time.

Sounds like I can deal with the launcher issue for now until it's patched.
It's people like you that make this forum a good place to be and learn about these phones so I really appreciate it. Sounds like I need to order this phone give it a whirl as my Mi Max 3 is just too buggy for daily use.

Thanks for the compliment.. I've mostly ever been a lurker but since I was one of the first to get this phone figured I'd help as much as I could.

Thank you for answering those questions! I am also interesting on this phone and your input is valuable!
May I know if you were able to watch Youtube, Netflix, etc with high resolution such as 720p?

So I don't have netflix as I use plex and such. Youtube lets me watch videos at 1080p60fps and I've actually tried doing 4k ones and it does seem to handle them well. Though you need to be closer to an AP since the transfer is a lot of data. I assume though you mean some paid youtube service or like amazon video which appears to stay low quality. The global is level 1 and china is level 3 for the drm security crap.
