heh, i`ve researched on the loox n5x0 series (htc maria?) rom format. now we can create custom roms.
Loox n5x0 OS_xxxU.nbf header format
total 42 bytes header, the rest is not crypted os rom image (what we usually call nb0 or n_d)
4 bytes - model name (N500, N520 or N560) + 11 bytes empty (filled with 0x00) +9 bytes version (e.g. 1.22.0001) + 1 byte 0x20 (space) +3 bytes language (e.g. ENG, ITA, GER) + 2 bytes empty (0x0) +4 bytes - reversed crc32 checksum (if we have, for example, 1163FCED, then we write ED FC 63 11) + 4 bytes - size of decrypted part (reversed somehow? we have 2100000 and write 00001002) + 4 bytes - rom base flash address (seems it it 80400000, we type 00 00 04 80, don`t play with it)
all this is true for OS_yyyU.nbf ( yyy means rom version), bootloader nbf is coded otherwise, it is usually named BL_xxx_G3.nbf or bl_xxx_G4.nbf. xxx - bl version. I suppose you delete file bl_xxx_G4.nbf or bl_xxx_G3.nbf. new pda`s come with g4 flash, it will be killed with g3 update. and, anyhow, bootloader update is always dangerous and not recommended.
wait a bit - in some days i`ll post a tutorial how to extract os rom image from n500/n520 and probably n560 pda.

I have a spanish N560 pda. I wanted to upgrade its rom.
I did everything as indicated:
- open pda and put it in the cradle
- connect cradle to the power and the usb to my WinXP laptop
- in my XP machine activesync (4.5 spanish version) connects and recognizes my pda
- check there is no password protection in the pda (there was none before)
- unpack n560.Alex_DFR_.AKU.3.5.2.rar and open with WinHex OS_213U.nbf; change ENG to SPA; save file
- execute PocketLOOX5xxFlashTool; in the end I get this error:
"The language in this Flash Image update () differs from that on your device (SPANISH)!"
Well, I did again and again and again... same error...
Any suggestions???
PS: I would like to put its new rom in english, if it's possible!

your update is quite intersting but I have two questions before I want to flash:
1. is the ROM affected by flashing your image, if flashing fails, can the N560 hard reset to original state?
2. Is there a tool which can fetch a complete image from N560 (with ROM)?
Can you give us a short info how you cook the image?
Where do you get the HW depended drivers (e.g WLAN, display..)?
Do you have any links? I have looked a long time
to find any info about upgrade the N560 or cooking Loox images.

I did the upgrade and it went fine, the only thing was that the keyboard was English, I thought there were all in the ROM, and I wanted to get back to the first ROM, so and here comes my problem, I executed
pdocwrite nk.nb0 0 0x2300000
The result of this is that it get stucked at the very first screen, Is there any way to get back? How could I upload a ROM to the N560 in this case?

Oh, i don`t know. we have xip with all wm6 modules but wm6 doesn`t boot yet. When we fix, and if we do, i`ll inform everyone

It's not there due to a bug. Likewise the transcriber does not work and hangs the system.
I suggest waiting until they fix it and upgrade then, if it is vital for you. I will wait for two reasons: it is probably buggy yet (only two known bugs now though), and I am loath to re-install everything from scratch for the next couple of weeks
Besides, people experiment there with pool size (with some trade-off in RAM) which may yield an even faster machine.
Also if you upgrade, you must not use an old (all-)system backup. Just re-install everything single piece of software you use. Note that some software may lose its registration since you will have a *different* PPC with new (and unofficial) ROM.

the flashupdateutility compare device version with version stored in the header of nbf file. Probabily if u modify the header of nbf from 720 to 710 with hexeditor the job can be done.
In the next month i try to port 720 to wm6 if i've more time.

I'm sorry, but my second one's display is broken too, this is why I got two of them...
On Ebay, a replacement screen had the same price (around 90EUR) as a used 718, so I bought another 718 saving me from disassembling the broken one...
If you go for a replacement screen - mind that the following devices share the same display unit:
T-Mobile: MDA Pro / MDA 4 / MDA IV
O2: XDA exec
Vodafone: VPA 4 / VPA IV
Qtek: 9000
Fujitsu Siemens: Loox 700 / Loox 710 / Loox 718 / Loox 720
But be carefull to buy the whole display unit consisting of 2 parts: display and touchscreen.

Before all I must concretize I'm not a professional! I do it for hobby!
Some ideas!
Because the WM5/6 has a diferent bootloader aka IPL/SPL, the first to do is to find a bootloader for machine with the same hardware specific:
And the most important is the memory, because the most WM5/6 devices have DOC memory and this is much diferent.
The most importent for the first running the OS is the memory addressing and the drivers for the same CPU TYPE and video. This is because we have to find devices with that same hardware!!!
Some of these devices are Intermec CN30B ...
In first simple lavel we have to search pics or open some devices in order to find one with the most similar hw.
If someone want to keep this project go i think this is the right way!
If someone have have the detailed hw specs for the a.m. devices please send this info to me!

I have tested both versions and they work fine, the @624 one is my actual one and averything is ok, It's running on my device second week and no issues.. also I know some other people with it, and no issues too.

I just try this rom, but "@624" can't work on my P535.
I think this is the best rom. Most i like is the opening screen and display still use the original one.
but there is some bugs with this. 1, Backlight timer can't be change, every time u switch it on it will back to 1min. 2, 'Encryption files when placed on a storage card' can't disable.
Now, i'm going to try 20753. i hope it will much better than this !!

Holy Cow!!! Maglite, how the heck were you able to fix the broken modules??? I've been working for over 6 months on trying to fix it and I haven't found a fix yet. If I remember correctly for the X50v rom, you had someone help you. Who helped you fix the rom??? Although, I must say that you've been very helpful getting me started with a functional rom (without errors). Might I mention that this is apparently not for a X50(low).

Talk about being blindsided. If this works, it gives me big hope for a possible WM6/6.1 for my extra x51 I've got. Been trying to get an x51v recently to finally get away from the x50v I keep using (damned NOR memory is just killing it), and I happened to find a nice x51 on Craig's List for cheap with some extra batteries and chargers and cradles too.
But wow... outstanding work, even if I don't have an x50 to test it out and offer bug reports.
Now I'm curious if someone can do an x51 WM6/6.1 ROM finally... this is very promising work, MagLite, and I for one thank you even so. Congrats...
I might be inclined to make a decent WM6 rom for X51 since Lenny has neglected to provide this (even though he did try a test rom).

I build/make ROMs for more devices than I can count now. And it helps to have a device. My WM6.1 problem on X51 is an XIP problem, and I hate trying to troubleshoot that problem without a device close at hand. My upload is too slow (50kbps) to keep upping ROMs for ppl to test. I'd love to release one, it's easy to build them, just testing is hard without a device! You get me a device, and I can have you a ROM within the week! I did the same for the X50v.

Test this rom. First beta of WM6.1 don't works, frezzing on booting xip section.
The WM A02 modifed ROM loaded sucessfully. The ROM responds much faster than the other WM5 ROMs I have tried. So far, I have had no errors or freezes. Wifi and bluetooth work as well. Is there anything specific in the ROM you would like me to check?

I would guess what MagLite wants to know is: would you say the performance is equal or better than using WM2003SE on it, the factory ROM?
Have you tried any video playback using TCPMP or whatever to make sure it's functional (a benchmark would come in handy too, it's accessed from File - Benchmark and then play a minute or two of video and report the results listed for Average Speed at the top of the list of statistics would come in handy.
If you can/could run that pre-WM5 ROM it would tell him/us the difference in performance between the ROMs, at least in terms of video playback which tends to be the most demanding thing a PDA can really do.
It's what I use as the baseline for testing on my own PDAs...
I don't think you can test the WM5 A02 rom fairly, because Maglite hasn't fixed the biggest problem that's been plagueing WM5 on the X50 series since the beginning.
You can't fix something that technically isn't broken, yanno. The x50 series has NOR type memory, that's how it was designed, that's how it works, and once you accept that you'll come to realize it's not broken: they work exactly as they're designed to work. The x51 series uses NAND, so Dell went back to the drawing board and improved that aspect of their PDAs. Sure, I'd love to have an x51v, but so far I've never found one for a price I could afford (I keep finding x50v models for $100 or less, but the x51v is always $175 or more, pisses me off).
So no, there's nothing MagLite, or Lenny, or Microsoft, or even Dell at this point can "do" for the x50 series because technically they work perfectly as designed.
Having said that, if MagLite can get his x50v WM6 A02 ROM and find the 0 pagepool mod for it (like the way Zeus_Alex modded that specific ROM), and then apply that (the 0 pagepool mod) to that x50 WM6 or 6.1 ROM above (note I'm being specific here and talking about the x50 ROM) then we could end up with an x50 WM6/6.1 ROM that's just as fast and snappy as the x50v ROM I'm using on my x50v right now.
I have a spare x50 and an x51 - the non-VGA non-Intel graphics Axims and I'd love to get WM6 on them, I just don't have the time to modify and cook ROMs, so I appreciate the effort these folks like MagLite, Lenny, and all the others put into creating ROMs.
So, MagLite... I think if this x50 ROM works (I haven't had a chance to test it, might not be able to do it since my x50 and x51 are in storage and I'm pretty busy these days, can't make the trip to the storage place), and you can make that 0 pagepool edit for it, I'll bet the performance improves dramatically.
Your WM6 A02 ROM for the x50v with Zeus_Alex making the 0pp edit gives me the best performance of any ROM I've ever used on my x50v, even faster than WM2003SE, and even with the known filesys.exe issue. It's just wicked evil fast and the battery life is fantastic, and I really can't say why. All I know is it works and it's hella fast, period.

I haven't had 2003SE on this X50 for a long time, an don't feel like downgrading. I had good experiences with WM5 from the start. The only issue was it doing a hard reset once in a while, when running out juice (wasn't WM5+ supposed to stop that?).

Howdy, simple instructions....Put your Flash file that you downloaded in root folder of your mSD card then turn off your phone.
Important step: hold down your Mute button and Microphone button together and the push the Power On button....when you see on your display message "SDBoot Loader...." you are good to go for update....just leave then firmware to do the upgrade and voila you have a Clean Boot of whatever ROM you downloaded either 6.1 or 6.5....Enjoy.....
