Hi,
I have s630 and i saw that even if i connect to wifi and then open IE i still get that big H turn on while i'm surfing.
I am assuming it still connect through HSPA and not wifi.
How can i be sure that it will run only on wifi.
Thanks

If you leave your wifi on all the time it is going to waste battery power, it would be better to just turn on wifi when you know that it is likely that you have a wifi access point within range. On my Trinity, wifi always takes over for browsing but for some reason retrieving mail can sometimes default to HSDPA. If you have a huge attachment to download, it is probably better to push the hangup button to turn off your data connection and just use the Wifi.
Wifi and GPRS switching
The only utility that I found useful for switching between Wifi and GPRS internet access is an application called "Bandswitch" (freeware).
Hey all,
Whenever my phone switches to a 3G network, I cannot browse the internet. IE or Opera, it doesn't matter. Works fine with EDGE or GPRS, but as soon as it switches to 3G it just stops. Anyone have any ideas?

Had the same problem when I visited Denver. Try changing the apn from wap.cingular to ims.cingular, maybe that works
I mainly use 3g to browse the internet with opera, but if i connect to my wireless network and open opera it continues to use 3g. Is their any way i can make it use wireless? I thought it should automatically but it doesn't.
Thanks for any help.
be connected just to wifi
Is that the only way? I use push email that uses 3g and would sooner not disconnect that when i want to use opera over wifi.
I've just checked Internet explorer and that's fine using wifi, but opera still refuses to use it and sticks with 3g. Does anyone elses Touch HD do this?
I'll have a look at mine in a minute, but need to ask a daft question, how can i tell which data source the HD is using for its internet information at any one time?

You can go onto google and search for 'whats my ip' and use one of them sites to see if its your ip address or one used by your operator. Thanks very much.
Sorry, that took a bit longer than a minute.
Opera is using wifi here. However, when I first boot up my phone in my house (i.e. in wifi range) data connection is turned off and wifi is turned on by default. However, even if i switch on the data connection and fire up opera, it still uses wifi rather that 02 mobileweb.
I may talk a wlk down the street later and i'll see if the data connection will come on at bootup if a wifi isn't available
Have you tried going to settings->connections tab->connections->advanced tab->select networks and changing the default connection to "My Isp" or "My work network".
This may help although I have had very similar problems with opera using 3g instead of wifi. I reported the problem HTC and after an absolute age they wrote back saying "That shouldn't happen" without any real advice on what to do next. Since then I have always turned 3g off when turning wifi on. I used to use push email but of course turning off 3g buggers that up so I have settled for syncing every 15 minutes and as a side benefit that seems to have improved battery life.

I've tried what you have suggested and opera did use the wifi, however when i turn wifi off it won't use 3g until i go back into those settings and set it to do so.
I've noticed that if i turn my phone on and don't use the 3g connection opera will use wifi fine, but once i turn wifi off or go out of range and use 3g then return to wifi opera refuses to use it and sticks with 3g. I just don't understand why it's fine using wifi so long as it hasn't used 3g.
so i enabled wifi, but how do i know i'm really using wifi and not 3g if i see a small E on top of the bars? it seems as if I can not turn off my data connection if i have wifi on..is that correct?

as you may know the "E" is 2g not 3g. When it is 3g it will say "3g" or "H", "H" being faster than "3g".
your wifi goes into "sleep" mode when not being used, helps on battery life, when your phone demands a connection it will take the wifi out of sleep if try to connect and if it does you will see the wifi icon, and if you are not an area that has wifi it will revert back to your data connection.

Not always.
AT&T purposely does not show the H and always shows 3G even if it is a HSDPA connection.
since i flashed w/ a new rom, there's no more 3g icon, but i did figure out how to bring the H back, but for some reason i have no idea why my wifi isn't working. someone told me to disable proxy, but i did that

that is true on a stock ATT ROM, but if you flashed a custom ROM it will display correctly

have you tried going to settings>wifi> click "turn on Wi-FI" select wireless networks and see if you phone detects any networks? If there is a network available then select it and set it up.
did you hard reset after you flashed?
Hey guys,
Is there a bug since the last OTA update with the wifi not letting the 3G connection access data when wifi is on? Seems like I have to turn off wifi for the 3G to pull data.
Its not an issue when I have a strong wifi signal, but when its weak, or non-existent, the phone does not seem to switch over to the stronger 3G signal.
It was definitely not like this before the OTA.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
I am pretty sure when you are connected to wifi, it kills the 3g because the wifi can replace any 3g data connection

I understand that wifi is a faster connection than 3G, but when there isn't a wifi connection, or there is a super spotty wifi signal, the phone doesn't switch over to 3G anymore.
hmmm. I am pretty sure mine turns off when when I am out of range. But if I am still close to the router it kinda poops out and sticks on wifi. I will check when I am out later.
The only suggestion I have is to put a wifi power widget on one of your screens to easily switch off if you are on a spotty network

yep, that's what I've resorted to doing for now. I'm 99% certain that it wasn't like this before that last OTA update. The only reason I ever had to turn wifi off before was when I was using my bluetooth headset.
Here is a little test you could try. IMO it should check to see if you dont fall back to 3G when you lose wifi signal.
Have wifi turned on and connected. Go to setting-wireless & networks-wifi settings. Where it says wifi network press the network you are connected to and press forget. This will disconnect you from that network and it should fall back to evdo. If it does then it is working properly.
