so i enabled wifi, but how do i know i'm really using wifi and not 3g if i see a small E on top of the bars? it seems as if I can not turn off my data connection if i have wifi on..is that correct?

as you may know the "E" is 2g not 3g. When it is 3g it will say "3g" or "H", "H" being faster than "3g".
your wifi goes into "sleep" mode when not being used, helps on battery life, when your phone demands a connection it will take the wifi out of sleep if try to connect and if it does you will see the wifi icon, and if you are not an area that has wifi it will revert back to your data connection.

that's very odd because i have never seen the H ever since i flashed the rom, but the 3g setting is set to be 'on', but that setting disappeared and i dont knkow how to get back to it. is there a way to turn on 3g?

Not always.
AT&T purposely does not show the H and always shows 3G even if it is a HSDPA connection.

since i flashed w/ a new rom, there's no more 3g icon, but i did figure out how to bring the H back, but for some reason i have no idea why my wifi isn't working. someone told me to disable proxy, but i did that

that is true on a stock ATT ROM, but if you flashed a custom ROM it will display correctly

have you tried going to settings>wifi> click "turn on Wi-FI" select wireless networks and see if you phone detects any networks? If there is a network available then select it and set it up.
did you hard reset after you flashed?

Wifi bug

Hey guys,
Is there a bug since the last OTA update with the wifi not letting the 3G connection access data when wifi is on? Seems like I have to turn off wifi for the 3G to pull data.
Its not an issue when I have a strong wifi signal, but when its weak, or non-existent, the phone does not seem to switch over to the stronger 3G signal.
It was definitely not like this before the OTA.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
I am pretty sure when you are connected to wifi, it kills the 3g because the wifi can replace any 3g data connection

I understand that wifi is a faster connection than 3G, but when there isn't a wifi connection, or there is a super spotty wifi signal, the phone doesn't switch over to 3G anymore.
hmmm. I am pretty sure mine turns off when when I am out of range. But if I am still close to the router it kinda poops out and sticks on wifi. I will check when I am out later.
The only suggestion I have is to put a wifi power widget on one of your screens to easily switch off if you are on a spotty network

yep, that's what I've resorted to doing for now. I'm 99% certain that it wasn't like this before that last OTA update. The only reason I ever had to turn wifi off before was when I was using my bluetooth headset.
Here is a little test you could try. IMO it should check to see if you dont fall back to 3G when you lose wifi signal.
Have wifi turned on and connected. Go to setting-wireless & networks-wifi settings. Where it says wifi network press the network you are connected to and press forget. This will disconnect you from that network and it should fall back to evdo. If it does then it is working properly.

Is there any way to disable automatic switching between UMTS and HSDPA?

In my apartment my G2 constantly switches back and forth between UMTS (3G) and HSDPA (H). Is there any way to stop this? Both look like they have the same number of bars, but it seems like UMTS is way slower. I also should be in a 4G market, so is there a way to tell if I'm on HSPA+ or not?
I've honestly never even seen the 3g icon on my g2. whenever im in kent, when it drops it drops from h, to E

I don't think the stock G2 ROM has a specific icon for 3G, if that's what your'e on. It shows H for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+.
I think the original poster is on Cyanogen, where it does show the type of connection a bit more accurately.
I'd also be interested in trying to force an HSPA connection. I don't think Bell has UMTS data so if I'm labeled as on 3G I can make calls and texts but have to wait for it to switch to H when I start using data.
It's a feature of cyanogenmod that it switches to 3G when heavy data is not required and switches to H+ when you need a faster data connection
That is of course if your running CM on your phone...

It's not a "feature" of CyanogenMod. This also happens on the stock ROM but we do not see the H icon, only the 3G one. Cyanogen himself explained this a while back.

You mean stock sees only the H icon, not the 3G one XD
Also note that if you're not actively using data, it'll show the 3G symbol (on Cyanogen or Sense ROMs) - as soon as you start a connection, it'll switch to an H. This isn't necessarily because the phone is switching between a 3G and HSPA signal, but rather because 3G is also used to carry voice - so if the phone isn't using HSPA for data, it obviously doesn't need to show it.
Thanks for all of the information, guys!

3G when connected to WiFi

On most Android Devices, when you connect to WiFi, your 3G disappears. This doesn't occur on my 2.2 Defy. Is this normal?
Mine does that too, but not completely. After the upgrade WiFi always disconnects when the phone sleeps (in 2.2.1 US the setting to force WiFi had gone away), and it takes a while after a turn-on for WiFi to be re-established, after which the 3G icon goes away. BUT, this is not the case right after reboot when for the 3G icon to go away I need to first toggle WiFi off and on.

That's the crux; that setting is absent in 2.2.1 (as I mention in the text you quoted)
Do you still have ability to select preferences in wifi calling -- if so, does that help over-ride 3G with wifi?

The short answer; yes, and no, the long; had to rename the app first, and the Calling Preferences is there and it was set to WiFi preferred.
So, it seems that the WiFi behavior is one of those things that still needs fixing in the 34.4.9 release.
Yes mine does it too. It did it on 2.1, and now 2.2.1. After about a half hour the 3G icon goes away. Doesn't bother me.
Mine wasn't doing this on 2.1, and yes, it bothers me. I'm on a limited data plan, so I have to make sure that most of my big downloads happen through WiFi.

It still uses Wi-Fi even though both icons are showing. I track my use with NetCounter from the Market, and "Data" is always 0 (zero) when I have both icons.

High battery usage when 3G enabled

Hello folks!
okay, the facts are: Im in very good 3g reception zone, MIUI 1.6.6 with default kernel, .08 radio, data on, wifi off.
Problem is poor battery life when 3G is enabled. Also, when using mobile data the H icon appears and data moves in and out, but sometimes the H icon just disappears and i get network error? I've tried numerous radio/kernel/rom combinations.
When i put airplanemode on, the battery consumption is constant 2mA (currentwidget). With 2G networks only, its 3-6mA. When 3G enabled, mostly the consumption is 20-40mA and sometimes like 10 times in day with minute interval of refreshing i get 8mA readigs. Any app to check if there is some syncing going on? I use only beautyful widgets weather widget, which updates itself hourly. And the normal contacts and calendar sync on. Fellow MIUI users have much lower consumption, a mate of mine gets 2-4mA when 3g enabled.
3g mobile network is one the battery killers. The h icon stands for hsdpa. This the fastest network but the network coverage is not that good yet (except for big cities). Switch network to 2g network (mobile off). If you really need mobile network, switch on 3g. Otherwise stay with 2g. There's imho no sense in using 3g without needing/using mobile network.

I tried using BatteryFu and APNdroid to get rid of my 3G while screen off. But that combination didnt work so well, sometimes it didnt disable my 3g and sometimes it wouldnt reconnect to 3G when unlocked. Any good programs to manage this?
I also wonder, I never cant download anything when 3G icon is appearing in statusbar. Its normally 3G but when I want to use the internet, it changes to H. Why cant I use the 3G network then? Im also having problems when the H goes to 3G the internet connection is lost. For example in market i get network error. The H wont stay there if there is no traffic for few secs.
Configured apn correctly? If you are not sure, do it again. Furthermore, you could try these settings for mobile network:
Uncheck data enabled and set network to 2g/gsm (depending on what you have). When you need mobile network, switch to "wcmda + gsm (automatically)" (name could be a litte different, translated it from germany) and check data enabled. I do it so and it's working fine.

Some phones do this and some do not. Mine did it on stock but when I flashed Jedi it no longer did that.
You can install the X posed framework with Wanamaker module and enable the 4G let icon all the time. That's what I do.
I would have to assume the radio goes into a lower power mode when WiFi is on. Do you really need your radio to tx/Rx full blast when on WiFi? Just because no bars are showing does not mean you don't have signal. I have wondered about this myself, because often this phone and others have exhibited the same behavior. Checking your signal manually always assures me that my radio hasn't shutdown. You don't need LTE anyways as there is not voice over LTE and I would rather have it downgrade to umts which I am sure it does. I do wish there was an option to over ride this for those rare moments you are expecting an important phone call but at the same time I am not that insecure nor do I let technology rule my mindset like that.

Forgot to add that when you do not have any signal you get the no signal circle which is rare when I am in a place I know I have good signal.. And when you see no signal in a place you think you should have full signal often times there are the other variables to consider.

I had the same problem and people made fun of me on here and said I didn't set my wifi calling preferences properly. Well, I did, and I'm sure you did too. The only thing that fixed it for me was flashing a custom rom. Both custom roms I've tried fixed it (MyRom and Wicked). Bug in the T-Mobile Rom if you ask me...
I'm on Tmobile and I'm having the same problem you have. I lose 4G LTE when my wifi is on. Wifi calling is off because of the caller id issue with oli or ;63, but that still occurs even with wifi and wifi calling off. It's hard for me to make a call on wifi since it will keep trying to redial with no reception. I always have to turn off wifi just to get my bars back and go on 4G to make a phone call.
It's pretty irritating if you ask me; hope either Samsung or Tmobile will make a software update asap.

Why do you want LTE on if WiFi is on.
When both networks are enabled then you are attached to two IP networks.
How are you going to make your IP traffic route if it is attached to two different networks?
I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying that is the way it would be designed to work I would think.
There are definitely tools out there that show that they are not both active at the same time
I'm going to interject on this subject because it is annoying as hell. First of all I have the same problem, but when I'm connected to wifi, my cell signal drops to nothing and if I'm on a call I hear nothing but choppy voices and the calls always drop within 2 minutes. It may put the cell radio into a low power status but it also makes making or receiving calls unbearable or even impossible on wifi. I use a data on off widget and when I'm not using my phone I turn the data off, so this is not remotely an issue with me. My ability to talk on the phone is a huge issue and cell signal drop for me has caused me to never connect to wifi on my G-note3.
Sounds like the WiFi calling bug. My cell signal is terrible at my apartment on WiFi so I have low signal issues regardless. I have no problems in other places when connected to WiFi and making phone calls. I am on at&t though and do not use WiFi calling.
sent from my sm-900t.
I had the same issue with my first note 3. I went back to tmo and argued It the no signal issue. It showed no signal when wifi was on but the cell was preferred over wifi calling. Turned off wifi signal, on no signal. Then after a few minutes the bars appeared back with wifi on. The manager came and told me that's normal for the bars to disappear. I said No Way Because they were there yesterday. But she said it's normal with wifi on I said I don't use wifi calling be I have good signal in house, But Need It on for browsing. She that's how it is I said bs, so I looking at my phone and I see no signal bars unless I turn off wifi or use wifi calling. Don't think so. And they only way I can check for signal is when I'm on wifi is to call.. No way. She said it's not a phone issue but a tech issue. I said it's the phone why was it on for the last 13 days ago now gone with wifi on. Finally she said she would exchange it. All this bs and she is my friend too. Now my phone doesn't have the issue but has rebooted by itself once again. I knew it was coming because the phone just froze on the flip app. I like Android and it's features, but damn I mess ios's stability.

It's not about LTE and attempting to use data, it's that you lose all cellular coverage so you can't make calls. Even if I'm getting 100% of my data from my wifi, I still need to maintain a connection to the mobile tower to route calls (with wifi calling disabled, which I immediately do because it's unreliable and sucks).

I assume when on Wifi and Wifi calling off, 4G LTE is not on because it's primarily on Wifi but you have signal bars.
With Wifi on and Wifi calling on, again the Wifi icon over takes the 4G logo. But the signal bars are down to zero because your using Wifi signal due to Wifi calling.
Just because it doesn't show signal bars doesn't mean you don't gave signal. Your dBm and asu trump bars.

You may want to install "Network Signal Info" or some of the Network info tools and examine your signal levels with and without Wifi to see if these is any change.
