Most of us in the US are on T-Mobile, we should get a solid 132Mbits/sec.
95 kbit/sec
By default Tmo sets the internet GPRS setting to WAP.voicestream.com I have noticed that if I use that I get around 40-80kbps. Change it to internet.voicestream.com or internet2.voicestream.com, you should get a solid 120+. I also used to run internet3.voicestrem.com at over 150kbps but it seems they have disconnected it for whatever reason. Maybe it was used to test something, but its gone now.
About 90 Kbit/sec for me.

hmmm, this may vary by region then.... i ran the test using WAP.voicestream.com and i got 146 kbit/sec then i change my setting to: internet2.voicestream.com and got 109 kbit/sec , i ran this test twice on the second one and it was the exact result both times. So for me, apparently my speed is faster on wap.voicestream.com ... but of course it may also depend on where the server for the site your visiting is. meaning some sites may be faster with the wap. and others may be faster with internet2. .... depending on your location/relevant to the server
That is interesting. Which file size do you test? I usually do the 100kb size.
unstable/too fast for a result (0.85s) please choose a larger file.
hehe using opera mini
with IE its
45kps
i can only use internet.voicestream.com if i pay for total internet right?
Wont work on IE. Says javascript isnt enabled. On opera mini for 1mb i got 320 kbit/sec

How it works for PIE for me, what rom version are you using?
I'm getting 606 kbit/sec with 1MB on Opera and 53 kbit/sec with 100k on PIE.

OMG people get a grip - test with Opera measures speed from testing point to Opera server, and Opera server serves you the page it received - hence the speed. From Opera server to your mobile it's still coming 90-ish kbit/s (the other matter is that pages are optimized and compressed, but this does not affect the data flow speed)
I installed Opera and the test is flying, but the rest of my internet experience is just as slow as PIE. So if you want true results you gotta do the 100kb test on PIE.

Yah well Tmobile Edge I believe is limited anywhere from 20-150 kbs per sec depending on where you are located and the reception of your phone.
150 max? Really? I'm glad I just don't have to listen to the dial up sound everytime I go online.

Yeah, I have been using this. Much faster than the previous version I was using. It even plays BBC IPlayer, a little jerky but amazing non the less. Shame they screwed up the logging in for Megaupload but all in all a good upgrade and by far the best browser on WM.

Make sure nothing else is running (use something like wtask to close programs). You're low on memory, you could uninstall some stuff, get a lighter ROM?
Looks like its not that..
I got Errors when trying to use GPRS connection.

Crashing
Keeps crashing on mine. have tried gizmodo.com only but that should be enough...
I've been using it for a little while now and find it quite fast and capable. It hasn't crashed on me once.
I did have to fix the proxy server setting, but other than that, I like it a lot.
The only thing I noticed is that it seems to use a lot of battery. I need to do some quantitative testing, I usually use Opera and it seems to use the battery much quicker than even the latest Opera, but I think my battery's on it's way out anyway, so it's hard to tell. Like I said, I'll have to try them with the same sites and conditions. I'll report back if I find anything helpful or conclusive.
Anyways, so far this seems to be a great browser. I've been a very staunch/die-hard Opera user/supporter for years and this is the first time I've found another browser I would even consider replacing it with. Good show. Thanks.
edit:
BTW it's an 8525, a HERM100 currently running CRC's latest stable rom 13.1 pre 6 or something. Anyway, great app. Thanks again.

Don't u think skyfire "EAT" Power too much, my x01ht only last 1.5 hrs if using it.
"To do, or not to do" That´s the question!
I´m using skyfire to see flashstreams. For all the other, i use opera mini!
Opera mini is very fast and this handling is easy.
In skyfire you must zooming the links, ...
Always and always the same procedures.
This is exhausting!
After installing the newest version or a server update by skyfire i have a new problem. in 1 minute reconnected my browser 32x. i have since 6 Month an account. everytime i don't have problems. if i use an older version, the the same problems.
are you have the same problems?

P.S. I have a 2Mb cable line at home
Dave
its ok for me
are you guys talking mega bytes or mega bits
ive got 7.2 megabits
It loads slowly trying to login and opening up a forum. Other than that it seems good. According to speedtest 25 megabits from work
It's been pretty quick for me lately. In fact, it's been better, since I no longer seem to get HTTP 5xx Server errors anymore. Speedtest.net says about 5 mbps from home over type N Wi-Fi.
Dave
@orb: Did not notice any speed difference myselft either. BTW I have a dialup connection using a USB modem . normally any page opens within 2-4 seconds (Always, should be more appropriate). Could it be that your firewall or router acting itchy?
Thanks for your reply
No it was not any firewall or router...
It happens randomly form time to time now is ok
Cheers,
I've noticed this too over the last few weeks, both at home >1.5Mb connection and even at work where the connection is 100Mb
May I add; nearly every morning about 01:30Hrs the site becomes unreachable for about 3mins. Though this may be due to backups
Forums been very slow for me. 15 seconds to just load the reply page.
The current problem discussion is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=510704
Yes, although not for weeks, bust for last 3 days, I am getting pathetically low speeds while opening pages here at New Delhi, India. Its taking around 15-70 seconds to open a page. I am on a 256 kbps line and all the other websites are working absolutely fine. Torrents are even giving 37-40 KBps / 296-320 Kbps (theoratically not possible on my connection )
But its a lot better today. I am getting pages in 3-5 seconds at the moment. I have also noticed that when its night here in India, pages start opening slow. I guess the other side of the globe is more active at that time

the site is popular
Time to look into cachefly. It is a great option to server balance without the need for additional servers. Someone at the top should go check it out and see if it would fulfill any needs for XDA. It is worth the look after all, ad banners generate faster with more pageloads...
FYI, for me the site is painfully slow. The initial html loads fine but anything needing the forum database is at a crawl.
Love the site, thank you admins and all helpers!
im on here all the time i have a 8mgb connection and its slow from other conenctions also... not always i guess when the site gets overloaded, i wish we could update the bandwidth or w.e is causing this for the site
I still get a slow site.... when browsing the forum it takes a few secs (5-10) to open a page... and it only happens on this site
i have a 16Mb connection!

It's slow for me also.
I have 8.89 Mbps download speed, and the XDA site is really slow today. I've noticed the page transitions were slow the past several times I have gotten on the web site, but today is the slowest I've seen so far.
for some reason it seems to be running like a turtle today...
Same here
Perhaps we are now too many users?!
I was getting 500 Internal Server errors on the home page earlier when the forums would not load for me.
Both browsers on my Tilt2 (IE and Opera) seem to have some serious problems where the screen is at times unresponsive or extremely slow. This seems to happen in 3G and Wifi.
Actually, I saw these types of problems in a review at: http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/cell-phones/htc-tilt-2/10602.html which said: "Nowhere did the HTC Tilt 2 give us more trouble than in the browsers. Both the standard Internet Explorer browser and the Opera Mobile browser gave us serious trouble, with an unresponsive screen that always took numerous taps to register a click on a Web link. It was a very strange issue, as finger scrolling was much more responsive. But when we wanted to click on a link, or when we wanted to tap the address bar to change our URL, the phone would require multiple taps, which was a seriously annoying issue."
Have others experienced this? Is the phone a complete lemon? Is anyone aware of a what could be wrong and/or a fix?
Experiencing the exact same thing.
At stock, don't expect the TP2 to run flawlessly, and this device is certainly not a lemon. Flashing a custom rom to this device improves its usability, and even functionality in some areas, But of course, it depends on the rom that is installed. It would help to scour these forums as there are numerous fixes and enhancements for the WM platform that'll make you enjoy it
I am not expecting it to run flawlessly. I assume, as you are with T Mobile, that you do not have the Tilt2. My experience with the Tilt2 is that both browsers are just non-functional given the complete lack of responsiveness. I understand that there are many things that can be done to it, but it seems like it should simply not be operating like this out of the gate. I would be pleased to do what I can to increase performance, but purchasing a new product that is not functional with the goal of enhancing performance should not be acceptable. Please understand, that out of the box when I click on a link many times it simply does not work and when it does, it often takes minutes to connect (in some cases worse than a throw back to dial-up connection speeds). If this is what Windows Mobile has come to, as a consumer device it really will continue to become obsolete with a very small user base. I am hopeful that it is not WinMo as I have had Pocket PCs since they came out and hope to remain faithfull.
That said, I have done a considerable amount of searching in the forum. If there is something you would recommend for this specific browser issue, I would very much appreciate the reference. Thanks.
While I wouldn't say that Opera is "unusable", it's definitely slow. I've read on the forums that Opera Mobile 9.7, which is currently in beta, seems to be significantly faster. Though, it lacks Flash if you care about that sort of thing.
I haven't tried it yet but it seems like a worthwhile shot.

Do any of guys use skyfire(this by far the best option), also check the proxy setup, Third just heads up, when I was selecting diferent option packages from ATT they initially screwed up my data connect and I was getting block out of there proxy, once this was corrected all is well but Skyfire is still the best released product.
Skyfire works, but its not very clear unless you zoom in. I have Opera beta but you can't use the zoom slider and its only marginally better.
Iris (God rest its soul) is okay but its not fast either. I wonders why none of them are cutting the mustard.

I prefer not to use Skyfire because it's completely insecure. I went to my fantasy football website and found some other user's session logged in. Had I wanted to be a jerk, I could have dropped all of his good players and replaced them with players from the Detroit Lions.
Seriously, though...if you use Skyfire be very careful what sites you visit as all of the data is rendered remotely and will be seen by others.
CAVEAT before I begin: I had pretty good connection with Opera (on 3G) out of the box.
As others have said on this thread, first thing is to disable the AT&T proxy (Start\Tools\Proxy Manager\Disable Proxy -- then soft reset), unless you want to use AT&T's Media Mall and other bloatware that requires an Internet connection.
In Opera the proxy still sticks unless you manually edit the opera.ini file. See this post here for instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4771442#post4771442
I had to do this, or Opera would not connect at all under Wi-Fi. Speed also seems to be improved.
It sounds, though, that you're speaking more about screen sensitivity. It seems that you have to zoom in more (than on a Fuze, at least) to get a link to actually respond when touched. This may sound simplistic, but note that when the Tilt2 boots up for the first time (or after hard reset), it does not run through the screen-alignment process as the fuze and other phones do. Go to Start\Settings\System\Screen and do the alignment -- it helped a bit on my phone. And every little bit counts...
SLLLLLLLLOW Browsing
I've very disappointed with the AT&T Tilt 2. I've tried several ROMs but the MS IE is slow in all of them. In some of them the Opera gets download speeds of over 1000 kbps. However, the MS IE is usually down around 300 kbps.
This is unacceptable. I used the same sim in my original AT&T Tilt 1 and I get 1200 kbps. What gives??

That's been my experience, too. Even with an excellent 3G connection (a megabit usually, or close to it, and sometimes better than that), and with the AT&T proxy disabled, both Opera and IE are utterly unusable on my Tilt 2 with WM 6.5.
And I can't blame Touch-flo. I don't even use it.
As a result, I run Skyfire as my default browser unless I'm in a place where I can't get a strong 3G signal. Then I switch to Opera Mini. Both are fast enough to keep me very happy.
I've wasted too much time trying to get Opera to do anything other than annoy me. Try some cooked ROMs, or switch. Otherwise, you're wasting your time.
i agree
I dont even bother to tap the links anymore, i navigate through them using the arrow keys and then press enter. I find them completely unresponsive to taps.
concur that the browsers suck
Too bad that there isn't a safari port....

just bought mine yesterday and it is un-usable taking 20-30 min. to access and sign into my ebay account is pretty much un-usable. My 8925 wasn't the fastest but I coud access the web w/o taking 2-5 min per page. i also experience problem with it. My experience seem to be that if I have both IE and opera running together, it will cause the unit not responsive. So far, I kind of stuck with IE as it seem to work better than opear.
Try the Opera 10 Beta, it is masses better than Opera 9 as far as interface experience and speed. never liked IE mobile and skyfire has potential but still feels unfinished.
Opera 10 has a really nice tabbed browsing system and is finger friendly. haven't seen any responsiveness issues. The other thing to consider is what else you are running in background, is Opera 9 still running in background? it could be slowing everything else down.
BRETT
I've noticed a discrepancy between actual data speeds on the AT&T Tilt 2 from various users on the board.
Some people are happy with 1.5mb rate, others have about 400kb, and then some people's signatures have a data speed rate of about 4mb!
I've also read that AT&T put a 1.5mb hardware cap on the Tilt 2, which negates the Tilt 2 owners who say they have 4mb download speeds.
My device gets from 400kb-1.5mb (roughly) from standard HSDPA data connection, and a more steady 1.5mb using Wi-Fi.
Is this the same with all Tilt 2s?
Thanks in advance.
I'm running on the EDGE network using mobile internet explorer, I just ran www.mobilespeedtest.com 3 times consecutively & here are my results.
2162 kbps
2439 kbps
2478 kbps
I purchased my tilt 2 Dec. 30th 2009. I did add the "speed up your data connection" cab
I'll try the data speed fix today.
Does anyone know if there is a data cap on the Tilt 2?
The fact that T-Mobile has the same phone w/7mb speed is ridiculous.
This is the phone I've been oggling for a while, but if there's a cap, it'll be a no go. To ask a rookie question, since I'd be coming over from CDMA and have been hearing nothing but trouble about the Nexus One in the last few days,...
Can you buy an unlocked T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 and then use it on AT&T without the cap?
Any educated guess would be much appreciated.
The T-mobile version will not work on ATT 3G, you will only get Edge
Bah. Vicious rumors....
(Frack.)
Out of curiosity: Presumably if HTC is making phones for both, then it would be a matter of swapping or hotwiring the circuit board? But then would the WiFi be capped? Newb question, I'm sure. Sorry. I'll root around the forum, unless you're willing to reply.
For speed tests use skyfire. Have yet to try opera 10
Opera 9 : 600 kbps
skyfire : 7200 kbps
seems pretty unrestricted as long as you got the right stuff doing the job.
*edit*
BTW, this is on a VZW locked phone with the dataspeed fix. I didn't do a before and after on skyfire for the dataspeed fix but I may try it later.
*editx2*
Also, IE didnt work much better. Best results have been on skyfire so far.
skyfire is DEFINITELY incorrect. it parses pages through its own servers before spitting them out to you so their speeds are inflated.
here are my speed tests:
www.mobilespeedtest.com - 2MB for more precision (keep in mind this is kilobits per sec not kilobyes per sec; for more information go here:http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1061)
opera 9.7 - 649kbps
i/e - 795kbps
skyfire - 6452kbps
and heres how you know skyfire is BS. you do the speed test for 7MB and you've downloaded 7MB in 4.8 seconds for a 11667kbps. That is a ridiculous number that even most internet connections at home dont get.
edit: this is with the jh20001 speed fix and also the sh4y one. and the youtube one i made. on an at&t tilt2 running energy rom 28011
http://www.mobilespeedtest.com
DEFIANTLY gives erroneous results and I really think that people should stop using it. I know EXACTLY what the maximum speed I can get is because I have an email from my network telling me what they have limited my HSDPA to and mobilespeedtest.com happily tells me I am getting multiples of this number.
The most accurate I have found is the 1Mb test :
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
Also - don't use any version of Opera with "Turbo" turned on or Skyfire as this will measure the speed that the proxy in between you and the test site will get. NOT your actual speed.
Thanks for all the replies.
I've also read elsewhere that Skyfire is not a good method of determining data speed.
dslreports.com's 1mb test does seem more accurate in conjunction with Opera.
I applied the datafixspeed cab and my speed still tops out at about 1500kbps on HSDPA with good reception. Even w/Wi-Fi, it doesn't go beyond that.
Am I to assume that people bragging about their 4mb d/l speed are using Skyfire, mobilespeedtest.com, or some other erroneous method of obtaining speed info?
Is 1500kbps d/l considered good? I mean, I finally gave in and got the data plan just for this phone. I wasn't expecting web browsing to be perfect, but the speed still hampers most sites that I visit. It also seems that friends w/the Droid and Blackberry have an easier time accessing the web than the Tilt 2 w/Opera. I'm not complaining, I just want to know how well our product compares to others and get the best experience I can w/the Tilt 2.
Skyfire and Opera Turbo both work by downloading the information you have asked for to a proxy server that sits between you and the data (web site).
The server downloads the data then it compresses it and sends it on to you, so it speeds up your pages loading because the phone has to download less data.
If you do a speed test you are testing the speed of the proxy, not your phone
No idea what's going on with mobilespeedtest.com apart from the fact that there's an advert before you run the test and people like good news ......
i have att and my speeds are nowhere near 1500.
i get 363kbps on dslreports lol. wtfs wrong with mine!
There's nothing wrong with yours.
It's the network. 3G runs at 384kbps so either the network in your area's not upgraded or your network's limiting your bandwidth.
My network is limiting my bandwidth, which I am a bit miffed about
Here is one everyone can use. Its one i use. Its on my server.
Payload size is 3MB
I know it is accurate. If you theater to your phone and download the payload you will get the same results as if you ran just the test. I would avoid using opera as it will give you false numbers, just use PIE.

Why do I have to tether to my PC if I am using IE on my phone ?

Forget about the computer.
Just open IE on your phone and go to the link.
I have T-mobile TP2 with 6.5 stock rom. I just add data plan to my phone recently. I notice that my opera mobile will not work any more if connect via wifi but it works with 3g connection. Skyfire, skype and all other programs work with both wifi and 3g connection.
I have opera mobile 9.7 and just install opera mobile 10. Both of them cannot load any page with wifi connection. I also uncheck everything under proxy setting in config menu.
Any suggestions to fix this problem?
Thank you

Yes, Please. Just discovered this today. IE isn't working either. Yes, I disabled the proxy. Other internet apps working fine, just not my browsers.
Use Skyfire It's Better Than PIE & Opera IMO!!!
One can only assume if none of the other browsers are working that skyfire would't work either haha
Worth a shot. Also.. I dont know if you've tried but back up all your info (contacts and whatever else) and do a hard reset. Then test and see if that fixes it.. I would say with 100% certainty that it will.
Then just load back on all your ap's.
Drastic but beats sitting around waiting for someone to happen stumble across the thread that has a fix.
Going to hard reset in the morning. Got some other broke stuff from trying out too many cabs, so might as well. Been getting a lot of error reports the past 2 days, too. Will report back.
Well Skyfire & PIE Work Perfectly Over Wifi For Me Opera On The Other Hand Works When It Wants 2 Over Wifi
OK, I hard reset and this is still not working. No Opera or PIE over Wifi. Any clues? I really don't want to install another browser if I don't have to. Alos, can't find the cab to make Opera exit on X instead of running in the background.

Man Trust Me Just Use Skyfire You'll Never Turn Back To Another Browser Ever Again!!!
I had Skyfire on my Incite and didn't like it. Why do I need to login to an account to use a browser? The stuff that came on the phone that is taking up space on the ROM should be able to work with both Wifi and MediaNet. No reason for it not to.
Have you guys tried using any other builds of Opera 9.7? There are a lot of different builds available here on XDA. Just search up "Opera Thread" and you'll end up with a thread containing links to download most, if not all, releases of Opera 9.5, 9.7, and 10.
If it were just an Opera problem, I might try that. But it is a problem with PIE, as well. That leads me to believe it is a Tilt 2 issue.

I have done the changes, tested IE, Opera, Google, Bing on AT&T 3G network (H with the .cab) and wi-fi, and everything works great! My speeds have jumped over 1.5mpbs consistently with the outlined changes, and all internet data apps are extremely responsive now. Youtube downloads load in less than 10 seconds, and no jumpiness. MobileTV is the same now, before, kept buffering or got distorted every 15-20 seconds.

Here's what I learned while getting the HTC YouTube application included in the OEM AT&T ROM to work perfectly.
The value in the registry needs to be modified:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\YouTube
ProxyName = wireless.cingular.com:80 (default value) needs to be replaced with [BLANK].
This value is intermittently restored, so it is nececssary to change a few others to prevent that.
The value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\SUN\JVM\PRELOADAPP
proxy = wireless.cingular.com:80 (default value) needs to be replaced with [BLANK].
The value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{EF097F4 C-DC4B-4c98-8FF6-AEF805DC0E8E}\HTTP-{436EF144-B4FB-4863-A041-8F905A62C572}
Proxy = wireless.cingular.com:80 (default value) needs to be replaced with [BLANK].
The value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apps\Esmertec Java\Properties
com.sun.midp.io.http.proxy = wireless.cingular.com:80 (default value) needs to be replaced with [BLANK].
Changing these three values will prevent the YouTube proxy from being restored. However, this will prevent the Opera Browser from connecting when the phone is connected via Wi-Fi. In order to fix this, the value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Opera\Defaults
ByPassProxyForNonGPRS = 1 (default value) needs to be changed to 0

I Had a similar problem. my opera mobile wouldn't work unless I opened internet explorer first. I saw this in another thread and it worked for me. Maybe it'll work for you too. (had to delete the link since I am still a "new" account)
