What is the best and the fast internet browser for HTC Universal using 3G connections ...
anyone have an experience ??
cheers..
If you ask me, Opera 8.60 and Netfront 3.3 are the only two contenders in this area.
After having extensively evaluated both of them I have put my money on the Netfront 3.3 now available in commercial versions
Regards
i hv used both of them. Opera provides the fastest internet experience and also the best internet experince. Pages get loaded pretty quickly
Hi kdskamal,
I absolutely agree with you that page loading in Opera 8.60 is faster than on Netfront 3.3. Furthermore the page rendering on Opera is also closer to the desktop experience. But one thing which made me opt for Netfront 3.3 is that if you load really large pages then the scrolling gets really slow and almost unusable. For example try the site www.pocketpcdubai.com and you will notice the difference.
The other thing which made me prefer Netfront 3.3 is the fact that this is the only browser whcih can handle file attachments at the Hotmail site. Finally support for flash objects was again another plus for me to buy netfront.
Regards
Opera seems to provide the best functionality and performance.
If you want to preserve Microsoft integration and services, stick with IE, but you will suffer from sluggish performance and minimal features.
Catch 22
If someone gets me an open source, I can build an awesome browser
Opera 8.6 is highly recommended
Preferably with a registry hack to act like IE6 (I use Tweaks2K) to ensure that you can still do all the secure stuff. The registry hack just allows you to load pages that may be a little strict about what browsers can view them.
I just installed Opera, and works great. Only pda pages will be shown very small, but that's why there's a zoom function.
The only thing is that the LogMeIn plugin you have to install for using this function doesn't seem to work with Opera, only on Microsoft IE or is it just me again???
Of the two (Opera and Netfront), I prefer the new Netfront 3.3 - install a narrow font on your Universal, and you can render all pages comfortably in the normal screen area. The stylesheet support is definitely the more complete, which gives perfect page layouts every time. Opera seems a bit quicker, but I find the occasional inability to tap select links to become incredibly infuriating.
Has anyone else tried Minimo yet? (Mozilla's Mobile Manifestation of Firefox)
For browsing purposes I have found it to be superior compared to others. The viewing area is huge (you don't need to set your Universal to VGA).
However, its downfalls are the amount storage and memory it uses. Additionally, it doesn't support Flash.
I'm sure future versions will be improved.
But like I said, give me an Open Source and I'll work on something
For me it would be the fact that it STILL has
the same greyish, blocky scrollbars as Windows 3.1 had....
You'd imagine they would have revamped those by now...
That is a minor quibble. Personally I do not see anything wrong with WM6... yet.
Most of us here are still happy that at least we are getting WM6
If anything I had a bit of quibble with Opera and its interaction with WM5\WM6 but then again, that is a software issue.
Yeah, if that's all you have to complain about in WM6, I think you're LOOKING for things to complain about.
Like the "Error Syncronizing" problem in Outlook, that no one but me seems to have seen; or the Calendar problem where Month is always the default view, no matter what's chosen in Options... These are legit. problems, not just complaints.

I am running LVSW Edition 2007-03-25 and do not have this problem with calendar, maybe it is your version.

Try UIQ for a month, you`ll hate PPC
WM6 has a lot to learn, as I see it on WM6 we have many stolen UIQ features.
Microsoft still has a lot to learn, a WM6 device just wont work as a normal phone and switch to "PDA Mode" when you need it.
UIQ has done it, you have a perfectly working phone with access to all the main features, with a flip of a switch you can transfer yourself to a fully featured PDA.
hm, the most annoying thing you say.
yeah , can think of 1 - a minor issue yet very annoying.
the busy signal comes out of the loudspeaker (as it did in wm5) !
i hate it. yeah of course you can delete the signal or change ir to a very quiet one, yet ...

I do use UIQ3 on my M600, and I'm not impressed in the least. It has it's own set of problems... Stability for one. It's better than it was, but it still isn't great.
As for stolen features, that's crap... name one feature WM6 stole from UIQ. I beg you...
I beg to differ

you are using UIQ3 - don't know that OS yet.
stolen features?
what about the new "week view" of calender? it`s entire functionality is copied from UIQ 2.1, what about the softkeys finally they copied the ability to navigate the device features?
stability, I used a p900 - for 2 years - 3!! HR(and I was to BLAME)
PPC? - cant count any more, a buggy program can crash your device until the next HR.
most of WM6 design targets declared where for a better use:
stability
speed
usability
Hmm, I had a P900 and the P910 (still use it from time to time) My friend has the Sony P990 (UIQ3). If you want to see problems with UIQ3 use a P990, admittedly most of it is hardware related but even on the M600 you will find problems.
The only way you can compare these two is to only run them on default software and never install 3rd party apps!! I have run 3rd party apps on my P900/P910 and had to do many soft resets etc even with popular apps (Sman etc)
I am so glad that I moved from UIQ(X) to WM(X) as just the increase in productivity software available to me has made it worth it alone! BTW my M3100 running the latest variant of WM6 is rock solid.
Oh & haven't you heard the expression there's nothing new under the sun. Everybody 'steals' from everybody else.

Well I havent taken the plunge to WM6 yet, still on WM5, but yes... having migrated from UIQ on several previous phones, I find WM to be an abomination of undocumented, overcompicated and non-integrated bloatware.
The saving features, however, are that it's the only OS I can get on such great hardware (Hermes), and there is such a massive user base that like Windows for PCs, there is loads of great software and support from forums like this.
and here i thought the most annoying thing was that the soft buttons were reversed on the bubble breaker game

The real most annoying feature - the thing just does not work. Period. It's a glorified organizer. It's a toy for geeks like us. It's anything but the reliable tool you can depend on. Radio, messaging, alarms / reminders - they all have [not] mind and schedules of their own ... actually M$ implanted brain farts

SSSHHH! You were not supposed to reveal that information!
But it is true... The look on the face of my GF when I have to restart my phone before I can make a call or when everything freezes when adding an appointment....
On my original post: the scrollbars might be a minor thing but it is something I see almost everytime I use this machine.
although I have not used UIQ for a while last one was uiq 2.1 i think or was it 3?
It was a very good os and stable.
but doesnt look as pretty as windows mobile.
Although its better programed and runs better on lower speed processors,
reminds me of the linux v windows situation.
pros and cons to both.
I like windows its pleasing to the eye
I'm sure this can be fixed, but i've search and haven't found a solution yet, so here goes, the most annoying thing about WM6 for is:
In WM5 (standard T-Mobile UK rom) i had a link in Start Menu for "Running Programs" this took me straight to Start->Settings->System->Memory->Running Programs, i would like to create a link on my WM6 that takes me straight here too, but i dont know how?
the thing I hate so far is they (in WM6) still dont allow you to quickley dial a meeting number.... like I used to do in a blackberry...... thats the only thing I find really annoying...
I sould be able to choose a reminder and if there is a number value in there I should be able to choose it to dail.....
one fo my biggest complaints.
in s60 phones when I was sent a concatenated message it would display as one contigious message.
in Wm5/Wm6 a concatenated message is displayed as several messages and sometimes they come in out of order which is really annoying.
if anyone knows of a fix for this short of using an alternate messaging app please let me know.
My biggest issue is that I cannot connect to my office VPN using Internet sharing, worked perfectly in WM5 as a wireless modem, normal browsing is ok.
Malcolm
Most annoying thing...
(1) Boot time is incredibly slow, at last count 40 seconds from reset to ability to make a call
(2) I still cannot send text messages to 'groups' - major gripe from WM5 followed through
(3) Text Messaging - New has been replaced by Delete as the initial text message screen (possibly a setting I havent found yet)
Major speed advantage so far though...

That actually wasn't WM5 but an addition by T-Mobile.
You could use X-button to close programmes completely instead of making them run in the background. That way you don't even have to go into 'running programmes'.
I've been reading up about http://www.htcclassaction.org for the kaiser and I was wondering if it affects the hermes? I couldn't get the devices page from that site to load, so I couldn't check.
I also tried a search, but this forum is getting so big, that at times the search returns garbage...

The Hermes is fine, It only affects the Kaiser. and use google to search rather than the inbuilt function, see my sig.
Ya I used the google search. It just returns too much crap sometimes, and I don't have time to search through 10 pages of crap
I was wondering about this b/c the hermes sometimes seems to lag a little, especially when scrolling things like websites, or control panel icons.
If you are running a stock Hermes ROM (WM5 ..... all but the late ones) then the drivers were buggy however the fully working video drivers have been available for a long time now, ALL the WM6 and WM6.1 releases will have the fully working drivers inside.
Its a shame the kaiser had such a bad rep due to the drivers issue, but otherwise a cracker of a device (i skipped it though....not enough cash).

Thats just the limitations of the hardware and software, anyway, the kaiser has problems with 3D drivers mostly.
Well, what I mean is that the Hermes is a 2 year old device afterall! With no offical WM6.1 builds, so there all ported, by the talented chefs here.
Heh... I get so out of the loop. When the chefs came out with the WM6, then the 6.1, I guess I just expected another miracle soon I remember my first jump from the lame WM5 cingular ROM to Schaps 3.x rom. WHOA. I wanna feel like that again I *have* been toying with the idea of using the very minimal PDAcorner rom and building a custom program base myself, but I only find myself ever doing the following... Playing bejeweled, making calls, or scrolling left and right aimlessly on SPB Mobile shell
Besides, I haven't yet found a program worth really investing some custom setup time into besides those. I tried iContact (pretty cool, but annoying after the first day or so), then i played with Resco explorer (interesting program, as for the plugins for registry and FTP, nice integration there from a programmers point of view), but I haven't had a wow recently. My last wow was SPB shell. I think i installed 50 different skins in the first week.
Do you know of any "wow" applications?

If you tweak the cache settings, well.. my phone feels almost instant with the following settings + 8meg pp:
File system cache: enabled
File system Filter size: 2megs
File system cache: 8192 sectors
Ignore the PNP stuff
Glyphe cache: 32kb
Using advanced config v3
(see sig for the rom im on)
Sorry for the noobish question, but I just got a S621, and I'm trying to figure out why Internet Explorer doesn't seem to have an exit option.
Please tell me there's a way to exit without resorting to the task manager.
Because Microsoft seems to think you want to leave most of their apps running all the time LOL
Use Task Manager to close it when you are done.
Gah. I was afraid that would be the answer. I wonder why they do this on a phone with such limited memory. And whats the point of keeping the apps resident when there's no task switcher? I suppose the recent programs partly serves this function, but it doesn't show which apps are running.
Quite the opposite to Apple's approach - not allowing apps to stay resident on the iPhone, which I believe has at least double the RAM of the s620 & a much faster CPU.
By the way, are there any freeware alternatives to IE that do not require server-based rendering?
Opera Mini.
Download opera mini from the usefull apps post. Its truly amazing.
I still have IE there for certain things like thestreamcenter.com so it knows im on a mobile phone. I use celetask shortcutted to the Tmobile key(nrg rom) to kill it and regain lost ram.
If you are using the tmobile rom I suggest switching off it as fast as you can.
Good Luck.
I'm using the 3VO 6.5 rom. I've used Opera mini before (while traveling in India & China) & I agree it's great, but I'm looking for a browser that renders pages natively, without connecting to a proxy. Is there any freeware one besides IE?
Also, what's the best way to map a button to the task manager with the 3VO 6.5 rom?

I thought it was the red t button on the bottom right of the phone. Thats if your using the same 3vo 6.5 as me...
There's Opera Mobile which isn't freeware but probably the best given the phone's limited memory. Apart from that the options are limited - Iris (free) which is based on WebKit is the other option that is a native browser (not through a proxy) but it's designed for a phone with at least twice as much memory really, so although it'll run, once you start hitting large pages it runs out of memory rapidly. Which is a shame because it's nice.
I use Opera mini unless I absolutely have to use a native browser (e.g. for logging into a wireless hotspot, Intranet etc.). It's remarkable just how fast it renders pages!
Hey, everybody! Cheers from Brazil.
Firstly, I SWEAR I've searched a LOT before posting these upcoming questions. Maybe my searching skills suck. Second, THANKS everybody for the amazing support you've been providing, specially NightRaven. This is my first post. I hope it doesn't hurt...
(background first): I have a Treo 700wx. This week I tried WinMo 6.1 (Sprint and Verizon's). Both worked smooth!! To the questions:
1- I simply don't wanna use IMAP email. It takes longer to download (compared to WinMo 5.0). People say I need to disable the "try to auto setup your account" field. THERE IS NO such field in my Treo. And after it creates the IMAP, I tried putting manually the POP/SMTP settings and apparently that doesn't work, since the field:IMAP is still set and gray (I can't change it). How can I setup manually a POP3 account?
View at EasyCaptures.com
1b- Is this related to WM 6.1? If I downgrade to 6.0 will be this issue addressed? What will I loose if I downgrade (I mean, 6.1 is REALLY better than 6.0)?
2- I know that's weird: but I prefer the old Pocket Internet Explorer, from WM 5.0. I need to get texts fast, I like navigating in "one single column" display, due to speed and ease of use (I'm a teacher, I need fast access to text-based web sites; besides, I'm always on a bus or in the subway, my hands are barely free, navigating on the OLD browser is easier). When I want quality navigation, aspect ratio preserved and access to the beautiful desktop-like screen, I go to Skyfire or Opera, or even the Internet Explorer that came with WinMo 6.1.
Thanks in advance, forgive my poor English and also forgive me for this loooong post.
Cheers!
