Hello all,
Somewhere during my explorative upgrades to different WM6, one of the upgrades changed my radio from 1.15 to 1.18.
Since then I have not been able to connect to the Cingular network with GPRS. It looks like it is able to connect (I get the 1cent charge for logging in), however, it will not access the net.
Does anyone what would cause this?
Thanks

Hi,
picked up a shiny new MDA III yesterday afternoon having switched providers - number transfer in progress - so I'm new to both the handset and the provider.
Managed to get the unit hooked up to my home WiFi network pertty simply etc and got the Active Sync sorted etc.... other than the fact the GRPS isn't configured out of the box, I've got a single major bugbear to sort.
That is that I don't seem to be able to get MSN Messenger to connect.
It's exhibiting exactly the same symptoms suggested here.... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832515
... but obviously the refers to a previous OS version ?
So, either I have something to fix or unlock in the set-up, the port is blocked on the handset (works fine on my laptop on the same WiFi through the same firewall) ?
Had a search through the forums, but to no avail. Can anyone help me on this ?
Are there any recommended patches/fixes I should have installed straight from the off ?
Thanks in advance !
Matt
OK, just so you you don't think I'm totally clueless, from what I've just been reading in the T-Mobile online manual, I have to have the GPRS connection open to connect to Messenger.
Is this right ? Surely if I have a active WiFi connection is should be able to connect using that, right ? Will it connect via GPRS and then pass it over to WiFi ?
I'll have to check it when I get home to see if I can resolve it in that way.
Any other tips gratefully received !
Matt
I'm using Messenger with a CSD (GSM) connection because it's part of my allowance. Sorry but I haven't tried WiFi yet.
I'm having the same problem.
MSN Messenger works fine using GPRS but fails to login using my Wifi connection.
What's even weirder is that it works ok when docked (ActiveSync)!!!
I'm using MDA III on T-Mobile (UK)
Anyone got any ideas?
I've tried replicating this issue, but on my XDA IIs over WiFi, it connects to messenger no problem... it doesn't even try to initiate a GPRS connection first. I can only assume that the MDA III is configured slightly differently out of the box.
As a thought, you might want to double-check Connection Manager and see which type of connection is set for programs that automatically connect to the internet
Ok, home and finished doing the set-up.
I've found no way of using MSN by any other protocol than GPRS. If you are WiFi atached and attempt to use MSN, then it will drop the WiFi connection and instead pick up GPRS. And obviously you're on for .075p per kb... which might be the real answer in why T-Mobile have set-up the device in this way.
The 'programs that automatically connect to the internet' doesn't seem to allow you to select WiFi as the default connection, only the range of GSM/GPRS options and the 'My Work' one.
Should I use the 'My Work' VPN option and set that up to use WiFi ?
If anyonebody has got any tips on how to set or hack this... seems there are a few of us that might benefit !
Just out of curiosity: if you go into your WiFi manager, have you specifically told the device that the WiFi card in your MDA III connects you to "The Internet"?
I can't recall whether that was the default setting before I set up my wireless network connection on my IIs... it seems like such a no-brainer, but it could assume that your WiFi connection is to a work network etc.
I'm at work and it 's at home.... but I'm adamant that that it knows that the WiFi connection connects to the Intanet. As you say, I think that it is the default setting
However, I will check !
Any other MDA III owners shed any light on this ?
Hi guys,
Got my Artemis (in the form of an XDA Orbit, UK) a few weeks ago. Everything was fine until a few days ago. These are my possible Internet connections:
1) ActiveSync
2) WLAN
3) GPRS
(and I'd use them in that order too).
However, everything stopped working - even when #1 or #2 were connected, it'd always try to bring a GPRS session up when I tried accessing something requiring an Internet connection (eg. QuickGPS, IE), and not provide a data connection either.
Has anyone else had a similar problem or know what the cause is? I've been through all the screens/etc, but can't find anything that would explain the problem.
TIA,
G
Hi,
I just upgraded my Hermes ATT 8525 from WM5 to the following WM6 version which I downloaded off of rapidshare site:
4. WM6 Cingular USA version (same as the official but cingular customized and radio version 1.48) thanx madcap180
Everything is working great, the upgrade was smooth and I was able to get all my data back and all that except for the WIFI connection.
I am able to connect to my Home Wireless Secured Network (SSID), and it shows that it is connected and has almost all the green bars showing excellent signal quality, but when I try to use Messenger or Internet explorer, it doesnt work. I am not sure why? Is it trying to connect using GPRS or cingulars Internet connection? If so, how do I fix it so that It connects using my home wireless connection. I do not subscribe to ATT/Cingulars Internet data plan etc,...
Any help will be greatly appreciated.... thanks
You should read the thread for this rom and ask your question there:

Thank you much! I posted my question under that post.....
Picked up a softbank X01HT today, my first WM device. It was lots of fun upgrading the Rom to Schaps 4.01 and getting bbconnect 4.0.0.91 working. Everything is great and this appears to be the device of my dreams!
One thing I've noticed though is that if I'm plugged into the USB to charge and activesync enables, the bbconnect service is blocked... likewise if I use the internet.
Any advice if these two scenarios can be overcome?
Thanks for a great community and awesome info!
You can't bypass it while utilizing activesync. As for the internet you have to use the browser that installs when you first initialize blackberry connect otherwise all other browsers will use your internet settings rather than the blackberry connect ipn. You may be able to configure it so that other applications use the bb ipn but since I no longer have my hermes I don't recall if you can. Maybe someone that has bbconnect with their hermes can chime in.
most, if not all carriers seem to not like multiple APNs running although WM6 can handle it.
What is happening is you are not using ActiveSync to surf, rather your mobile network, which shuts down the BN APN for your standard internet
The only time I am able to use both BBConnect and IE is when I am connected to WiFi. Somehow, WM6 establishes connection to WiFi access point and yet BBConnect is still connected to the BB APN.
Strangely I suddenly cannot access the internet at all, is there a way to force the browser to use my Rogers GPRS connection to access the web instead of the BB apn? It is staying on now even when I try and access the internet. Thanks!
Actually I figured it out. If I use the default browser in WM6 it goes nowhere but if I use the Internet Browser in the blackberry program folders I'm fine on the BB apn.
Saw some earlier posts on this but haven't seen where anyone has figured out how to get the old WM5 wireless modem on WM6. Has that been done? For my applicaiton the new internet sharing simply won't work - or I haven't figured out how to get it to work anyway. I can connect to internet sharing just fine. I can get on the web and all works. However I have a tunnel application for my job that I need to use through the cell phone connection. When I start this applicaiton, the PC gives me the blue screen of death. It is repeatable. Doesn't happen with the WM5 wireless modem connection or any other connection to the internet I have ever tried - just this new internet sharing thing on WM6. I actually use the USB link so it isn't a bluetooth issue. Just something in the internet sharing that blows my PC up. Any thoughts would be appreciated - or a method to install the wirless modem on WM6. I'm using the standard ATT upgrade ROM - stock model.
Thanks.
