What will be lost if battery goes flat? - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hi,
If the main battery and back-up battery both go flat in my Orbit, what will be lost?
Will software that I have installed be lost? ie tomtom.
Will email/GPRS-settings be lost?
Will contacts be lost?
....also how does WM5 compare to WM3 in terms of battery failure.
I'm running back-up software anyway so I guess none of the above will be an issue anyway however, I'm still interested to know. Finally will back-up restore all of the above issues?
Cheers
Rob.

I guess it depends on how long the battery is dead for.
You have to remove the battery in order to get the MicroSD card in & out, and all the settings are still there afterwards.

A multitude of issues

Hey, I just got a Pda2k and I was wondering about a lot of different things
1.) Is there a MMS feature for this phone, cause it didn't come with it
2.) Is there a program that will allow me to have different Rings for each different person that calls me.
3.) Will overclocking cause any temperature problems like it would in a regular computer
4.) Is it possible to upgrade to WM5.0 using a Infrared connection and a wall charger
5.) I read about a photo ID feature, do I have to download the program and install it to the phone?
6.) Does this phone have Speaker Phone?
7.) The keyboard seems to be a little loose, is there any way to fix that?
8.) If my main battery goes dead, is there a way for me to use the back up battery?
Thanks in advance
1. its there. go to messaging application
2. try mortring(use search)
3. you can overclock to as much as 524MHZ or something. BTW, the unit is quite speedy. why do you need to overclock. It will just impact the battery life.
4. you have to use the included cradle to upgrade to WM5
5. its by-default installed(unless you have cooked/modified your ext-ROM)
6. yes, when talking to someone, just press the talk(green) button for 3 secs
7. known issue. I have put a transparent tape on the keyboard to ensure commensurate amount of friction. this has helped it from getting loose(at-least it works for me)
8. no
Thanks a lot. That answered alot of questions. Uh, I have a few more to throw at you though
I bought this one used and I he told me that her used the ExtROM program, so the MMS messagin is gone. Is there a way to restore this program?
Is there a place where I can buy an extra copy of WM2003SE, cause I'm not sure if this has it. Would upgrading or reinstalling WM2003SE repair my MMS?
And what does the back up battery do?
(Oh, I wanted to overclock my system to see if I can get full speed out of my PocketGBA and PocketSNES. I have a spare battery)
you dont need to 'buy' wm2003se as the upgrades are freely avaliable from this site and your telecom.
However like all upgrade you need an sd card (complicated) or a cradle.
Could you give me a link to an Guide to installing WM2003SE and the files I'd need to do it.

Replacement Vodafone V1620 problem

This is my second V1620 in about three weeks: the first replacement was after about nine months because the SD card slot stopped working. The replacement suffered severe touchscreen drifting and needed alignment every five minutes so they swapped it for me.
No complaints about Blue Angels or Vodafone: here's my problem. I use SPB Backup and am very careful about this to restore my system so that TomTom continues working OK. However after restoring my system today I find that TT (Navigator 5.21) is now coming up with a different device ID than before so my continuity is broken.
Does anybody know why this would be? I have checked the ROM version and there is no change there, although I am in desperation about to flash using the same version. I have no logical reason to this but I am clutching at straws!
All suggestions gratefully received, and many thanks in anticipation.
Jonathan
Strange.. My Vodafone v1620 has a deviceid of PH20B2, check if yours is like this, using GetDeviceData
Thanks xan, that is quite correct. The thing is that every pocket PC generates an unique system ID every time you do a hard reset. This is stored in software and can be overwritten by restoring a backup. In this way programs that are keyed to that ID such as TomTom will continue working even after a hard reset. If you do not take a complete backup, using Activesync or any other tool, then you would find that they stop working which is the situation in which I find myself now.
The strange thing is that I have made hard resets and restores many times over the months without a problem, hence my appeal for help!
Do you know where this id is stored?
No idea, I'm afraid. All I know is that if you make a full restore then it reverts. I believe that it may be referred to as System ID or SID as under W2K and WXP.

Stability issue and soft resets...

I'm on a Cingular 8525. Updated the SPL, radio, and am currently running WM6 Black Edition. When my 8525 was completely "stock" and running WM5, I noticed that every morning I had to soft reset the device after leaving it charge over-night. Sometimes daily too and just totally random. The phone would "freeze" or be unresponsive, so i had to soft reset it. Not very stable in the "stock" condition. Ok, so after upgrading to WM6, I'm running into almost the same problem. Is this pretty normal? It's annoying, but if this is just one of those things that 'happens', then so-be-it, but I did notice the upgrades have limited the soft resets. Are there known apps that can cause this "problem"? Searching the forums I've seen others with the same or similar problem, but no real definitive "reasons". Any advice on said matter would be MUCH appreciated.
Sincerely,
SFC Fin

What 3rd party apps ahve you installed?? and what stuff is running??
I presume its black v2.0 correct? (if not then upgrade to 2.0)
3rd party apps currently running are as followed:
Wisbar Advance, and WADesktop
Photo Contacts Pro
MagiCall
psshutXP
That's pretty much the only things running. I'm gonna take your advice and update to 2.0
*Question: Are the above mentioned apps that I have currently running known to be "buggy" or to cause this soft-reset problem?
Thanks,
Fin
Almost all SPB software is known to cause one crash or another, remove WAD and WA and see what the effect is??
Besides the black theme is cool looking anyway!
EDIT: upgrade as described in my guide to make sure you have the latest SPL and radio.
Figures! lol The apps I like to skin my device cause problems. Murphy's Law v2.0!
Ok, I'm on radio 1.38, and SPL 1.3Oli Upgradind the SPL wont cause any modifications correct? Also, to re-inforce your statement on "SpB" software, I tried to use SpB Shell last night and it sucked, to be blunt. Once the bugs of 2.0 are worked out in the next few days by the initial "testers" and "CAB" makers, I'll join the masses once again, and just in time for the next upgrade!
Again, thanks for all your help,
Fin
Not Wisbar
I have both Wisbar Advance and Desktop and I don't run into the soft reset problem. I am running WMXL0.20 and everything is running smoothly.

ronfin44,
Do you have your ext rom mounted? I have the problem you describe if I leave my ext rom mounted, but when I unmount it all problem go away and it never needs a reset.
Not sure. Need a point in the right direct as far as EXT ROM MOUNT goes. So is this a good idea?
Also, I have a sync issue, so upgrading to SPL 1.40 is temporarily on hold. It doesn't "settle down" like the guide states. It stays in a constant state of "syncronising", where the green animation keeps on rolling and Active Sync never comes to a final stop. I can upload new apps and delete things still, but I'm cautious to continue with a ROM update if this sync issue could cause me to brick my pants and device.
Fin
You mount the ext rom through HTweaksC, so if you don't remember doing it it isn't done. Sorry I couldn't help.

Actually, you helped by saying that. Since I haven't touched HTweaksC, I'm un-mounted at this time...and damn does that sound gay when you re-read it. hahaha
Ok, so on to this sync issue. I'm gonna upgrade to ActiveSync 4.5 and see if that stops the constant problem before I up my ROM to SPL 1.40
EDIT: ***I'm an Idiot*** Ok, glad I ask so many questions over and over, cause after asking about my sync issues I went BACK into the ActiveSync thread after updating a ROM, and noticed I never made the proper changes. Guess what, all fixed. See, following the guide completely makes less of these annoying posts.
From reading your post's, it doesn't appear if you fixed your lockup problem yet..
If not, do you have a storage card installed?

Roger that, I have a 2G card installed. Upgraded to SPL 1.40 also. Fixed sync problems too.
I have had lockup problems just as you describe with bone stock wm5 and nothing on the today whatsoever, but had a card in.
If you dig deep back in the hermes thread, I posted about lockups long ago, and it even came back on my xdalive 0.1 install, but it had been so long ago, I initially forgot how to fix it.
I have yet to determine if it is related to a file name, size, or possibly the ammount/number of files, but I can have my device locking up for days in a row, and then Ill clean out my storage card, and it's everytime I clean the junk out of the root of the card, and put it into folders, all is fine.
Ill even go for a month or so and have a lot of crap in there, and it wont do it..so I could be wrong, but you might give your card a cleaning, or try pullin it for a night, and see if it locks up.
That is if its still doin it...the "fixed activesync too" has me sightly confused...even though you said "roger that"....so Im not 100% sure if you meant its still locking up or not.
I had also freeze, lockup, wakeup and charging overnight issues with the shipped Dopod 838pro WM05 ROM, even after soft reset.
Then i tried to flash with newer Australian WM05 ROM, then it became more stable and i did softreset only once every week.
With WM06 i tried first time to use WM06 with XDA Live! V0.2 ROM, then it became unstabile again. On one hand it solved the charging overnight issue but on the other hand other issues remains there.
The i tried now with LVSW Edition (2007-03-26) ROM, all problem solved now. I have no above mentioned issues any longer. I never do softreset until now since 27-03-2007. I think it is the most stable ROM i ever have. You may try to use this ROM also.
Good Luck!
Seems as microSD card is to Blame
We're investigating the lockups for some time, since also reported with stock ROM. Tests conducted on both Hermes 100 (IMate JasJam), and Hermes 200 (HTC TyTN). Tested with all WM6 ROMs, now on Black2.
Build: 17740.0.2.0
AKU: 0.2.0
CE: 5.2.968
Radio: 1.38.00.10
S/W install status: No SPB s/w, no Today screen PIns, both with Taiwan controller cards (Sandisk and TekQ) and with Japan controller cards (original Toshiba and Kingston 1GB). Only SatNav app on card, no Today PIn, normally closed.
When microSD is in device: once every 12 Hrs. Lockup. LEDs On, no Power On, not getting calls. Long (2 secs) time from pressing power button, to Device Power-On. Only SR to release.
No such problems when micro (any) SD card is out.
If you care to test on your device and report, it will be appreciated. Just take off the mSD for 48 Hrs.

Card seems to be the problem here too... No Card in, no lookups at all... but we have something other folks here certainly don't, on top of all we have a non core level localization environment that may add an unknown to the equation. I'm gonna put back the cards, and suspend the localization to re-test.
As in OMC's, card is one of my usual suspects, but so is the localization,

No lockups here anymore, with EVERYTHING installed to sd..except dialer skins...etc.
To everyone that are finding out it is sd card related, and you find out pulling it helps, I advise to clean out your card, and leave nothing, except folders/directories in the sd card root, I do keep .tsk themes in the root, so they show in settings...so Im not sayin it always has to be clean.
Im not sayin that Im 100% right...and people with lockups might already have empty sd cards...but I can simply move files from my root with resco explorer, and it goes away.
Hopefully this won't be in the invisible font, that I think gets used for my posts sometimes.
I can just add that some time ago when I owned a Wizard it used to freeze when I used Wisbar. Without it, it either didn't freeze at all or rarely, just don't remember. In case of my first Hermes (T-Mobile version) it was the same. Now my new one freezes without it. What I checked was that it usually freezes while charged. If I left it without charging over night I was ok in the morning.

Ok, I know my SD card is a mess, so I'll clean it up, and report back in 24 hrs. I guess I'll report on each step and see if anything fixes the problem, and if a "fix" works, or the SR's become rare, I'll backup one step and see if they re-occur, so atleast we'll know what helps cure this problem, or atleast make it a rare occurrence.

Disabling the hx4700's backup battery?

... I was wondering whether this was possible. Please correct me if im wrong, but the backup battery's main purpose was to keep data on WM 2003/SE. Since WM5&6 have a different file system, this isn't necessary any longer.
My hx4700 keeps shutting down and restarting quite unexpectedly and for no apparent reason, and I thought this might have to do with the faulty backup battery. It keeps showing it's empty, then shows 100%, and laters is back to 0 again.
Im not to keen on sending it in to be replaced since im rather busy and I dont see why if it isnt used in the new OS in the first place. So if there is another way, id be very happy to try that.
I use Kozhura's WM6 0.3.2, and plan to upgrade to the fixed 0.7.0 later today... maybe that'll help matters too....
thanks for any ideas.

Upgrade with a few problems....

Hi Folks
My Hermes/Tytn is an Orange M3100. Recently it has begun dropping calls, or rather, ignoring them. The caller could hear a ringing tone but the phone wouldn't switch on, show me an incomming call or anything. A short while later, usually after I'd switched it on (I mean, the screen, "off" is that it's on standby) I'd get the notification of a missed call. More often than not it would come through after I had made a call.
This reached a "point" on the weekend where I missed about 17 calls from the Agency to get work for me as I was the only one available
So. I upgraded as reccomended on here. Up to HardSPL 2.10, Radio version 1.41 and then upgraded to Schaps 4.22 WM6 Rom.
Now, I made sure that ActiveSync has connected and synchronised, and all my contacts and PIM info is in Outlook. However, A/S won't transmit the information to the PDA, even though it tells me it's synchronising.
The only way I have managed to get my PIM data/address book back onto the PDA was by running a custom SPB backup file to restore the calender, sms and phonebook.
This is where the fun starts. My PIM and Tasks then go "read only" merely by having a warning telling me I have no memory and to go and close other programs down. But there isn't anything else running!
Fine. Right. Ok. Obviously I've done something wrong. I did a hard reset this evening. It wiped all the data internally and reset it. I changed the details to match the username that was already stored in A/S and plugged it in.
It tells me "Connecting" and the green thing swirls around but doesn't actually do anything.
I have heard mention of the MTTY software, so I've got that here. But it won't allow me to connect on USB, only Com1, 2 or 3.
So I've a pretty useless phone at the moment. It's got none of my files on there, the satnav is rendered useless merely because I can't install the sod and all the other problems to go with it.
Short of screaming abuse at it and throwing it across the room I'm a bit stuffed. And I can't spend anymore time on it as I've got to be getting up for work at 4am (only finished tonight at 8pm ) for another full day
I've read the wiki, I've gone through the pages and pages and, er, pages of posts but I'm hitting a brick wall somewhere. I'm not as bright as you guys, but I get by.
TIA. Elwyn

Try disabling the enhanced feature in your usb to pc settings on the device. Also try removing and reinstalling activesync, I have to do mine roughly once every fortnight or so and I'm on the latest build of AS4.5

Ok, as the first reply said, YES. The USB advanced thingy was checked. Once that was sorted then it sync'd. I still couldn't write to the PIM/Messaging/Phonebook but I could get it backed up. Once that was done I did a hard reset, then before I plugged the "fresh" install into the computer I set up the variety of settings (machine name, usb advanced, name etc) THEN plugged it in. System recognised it, and then proceeeded to "restore" the relevant details of my PIM/Addressbook/Messages.
I think the restore from SPB was being written to a part of the memory that it wasn't supposed to. Either way, I've stopped using SPB Backup now.
The phone works well. I've even got all the SatNav software installed and working on it. The installation from the memory card didn't take that long, once it was working propperly. Which was good as I did all of that "out on the road" away from the computer (I was in the passsenger seat then).
The only issue I have noticed now is that the battery seems to go quick...
Anyway, thank you for your help. I can now go and have some xmas shopping to relax with....
Cheers
Elwyn
Glad to hear you got it working, for backing up your contacts, messages etc I'd recommend PPCPimBackup, if you do a google you should be able to find it easy enough.
Have a good Christmas.
