I use GPRS to connect and download emails. After I delete some emails and reconnect, sometimes they will redownload again. And after a few days, the emails seem to automatically dissapear from my inbox.
Is this a setting issue or a OS issue? Appreciate any help!
What do you use? Pop3 or Exchange?
Exchange: The mails are kept only for a few days on your device. You can set that time period in Active Sync in the options for email.

The same applies to POP3 - there is a setting in the account for only downloading messages from eg. last 3 days
Thanks for the replies...
Im using POP, and am not activesyncing to my desktop, so that shouldnt have caused the mails to dissapear. Am only connecting to my email via GPRS, and the older mail in my inbox will just dissapear as I download new mail. I think it is generally after 5 days, thou I havent really tracked the trend.
The only setting I can find is the one that says download mail from the server - last XX days. But surely this should not delete the emails that I have kept in my inbox?
Any ideas?

Thats exactly what it does! It doesn't delete them off the server, but each time you send receive, it refreshes your mailbox with only the mail that meets the criteria. Simply change it to 30 days or something - but if you have lost of mail, do the next send receive over wifi or activesync.
(Oh and why dont you sync? If you lose/break your device, activesync means you have all your contacts/calendar/emails ready to sync to a replacement in seconds)

How else do you access your email? For instance, I also download my mail with thunderbird which takes them off the server. This means next time my pda syncs the emails will disappear off the pda. Also make sure you are downloading all mail and not just that from the last xx days
Similar problem here
I'm using Gmail with pop access and my messages seem to disappear from the device too. They are still on the server, but if I read them once they tend to disappear on their own, often that same day. This seems really strange because I have set to download messages from the past 7 days. I've got Automatic Send/Receive checking every 5 minutes. I didn't have this problem at all under WM5. I've had it with each WM6 version I've tried...Black 2.0,2.5, and LVSW.
Hi,
For keeping 30 days worth of email on your PDA for GMail if you use the username setting "Recent:[email protected]" . This is how I have mine setup and I get to keep 30 days of emails without the disappearing after a couple of days
Cheers

Thank you SO much. This problem with dissapearing messages was driving me nuts. Actually I was also wondering what that "Recent" ment as even Gmail never mentioned anything about that option.
does this work for verizon pop3 mail too. Im having the same problems as well with disapearing email.

Hi,
I seem to be having an issue with the new stock 6.5 rom (Also had issue with other rom). I have an outlook account that uses an exchange server and that works fine with approx 7 days retention.
But I have another pop3/smtp account that although it retrieves and sends OK. It seems to be randomly dropping the emials. I build up 1-2 days of email, only 7-10items after deleting the usual spam. but then they all dissapear.
I would like to have a rolling 7 days of emails on this personal account.
Anyone else have this issue or do you know the solution to extend the number of days mail you keep on an email?

Same Problem
I am having the same problem with my Gmail emails being randomly deleted. For me it seems to be a time limit, after too many days of the same emails it deletes them. Originally I had this problem when I was archiving incoming mail. Everything was fine for about a week after I set gmail to not instantly archive mail. I have installed htc addicts clear ram, could that be deleting my emails from the inbox? Any help is appreciated.
Not sure if this is your problem or not - but...
Go to MESSAGING, highlight the account you are having issues with, click MENU, OPTIONS, click the account you are having issues with, click SEND/RECEIVE SCHEDULE, and change the DOWNLOAD MESSAGES: to the value you want...
Also - if you click ADVANCED from that screen you can select what you want for DELETING MESSAGES (keep/delete from server)
I finally solved it by changing over to IMAP rather than pop3. Also changed to a custom rom!!!
see what happens
Thanks nayr1482, I have tried that and it didnt blow up and so far nothing has been deleted. We will see what happens.
When I get mail its taking long periods of time (2 + hours) before the phone syncs and alerts me. Should this not be instant? If I perform a manual sync mail always comes in at that point.
Im using the built in gmail app (not mail). Background data, and Auto sync are checked. Sync Calendar/contacts/Gmail are checked. Gmail account does have IMAP and POP enabled, I had no issue with instant email sync with the PRE.
Is there a setting im missing? I really need email to be more instant than hours.
There are several of us that are having this problem today...If your phone just started doing this today it's likely that this is a problem with a gmail server somewhere.
Mine's been working fine lately. Is your Gmail set to sync as mail arrives, or is it timed?

Maybe I'm slow but where is this setting?
guys, I got a really odd issue with my tilt 2 and yahoo email. I got the phone setup receiving emails from a couple of my email account, yahoo and gmail. For some reason, one of my yahoo email always download all of the mails after like a day or two of use despite the fact I set it to 1 day or 3 days. What is wrong with it?
Finally!! Someone who can relate to what I'm going through.
Any fixes for this? It had downloaded over 1400 emails in one Yahoo account and everything on the phone was lagging. There were some areas I couldn't get to: Home Screen. I ended up doing another hard reset and reloading the data from there. The only thing that sucks about that is that I lose the threaded SMS that I had.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ditto on the problem. I haven't figured out why it does this yet...
same issue has happened a few times to me. only solution I found was going to yahoo on my pc & archiving old emails so I keep only 100-200 emails in my inbox.

This is a rare issue for me. It's happened to me less than 10 times (on my HD2 and my TP2).
The only thing I do when I see it trying to download 300+ (instead of the 5 days of mail I want), I press Menu > Send/Receive to force-stop the download. When I retry, it goes back to downloading the 5 days-worth of mail.
Something I noticed...I set my gmail to sync hourly but it does not do that at all. Both my hotmail accounts will sync hourly but whenever I go to my gmail app, the longest time before another sync was like 22 mins. I emailed myself something through gmail once and although my sync settings were still set at hourly, I got the email 10 minutes later. Idk what's going on with that. I just now put it on manually because I'm pretty sure its turning on my 3G more times than it should.

He probably means the Gmail email app you get once you configure a Gmail account on your WP7.
slightly different problem with gmail sync
Hey everybody,
I'm wondering if anybody else is having the same problem as me at the moment ?
I've had the phone a few months now. I experienced a few issues with Hotmail and returned to using Gmail. It used to sync and push emails flawlessly, however it seems to have stopped working which is driving me mad.
When I wake up, i'm used to seeing new messages waiting for me (mainly XDA forum news). However, the push functionality has stopped working. I open my inbox, and see a message indicating email is up to date. However, no new messages are displayed. When pushing the sync button, the inbox is synced and the new messages are displayed, despite the settings set for "as items arrive". Highly annoying and not very productive to have to check for messages manually.
I played around with the settings trying various options, I even deleted the account and started over again (which was a pain re linking contacts etc, all to no avail.
Can anybody help me to restore my push email please ? I'm getting really cheesed off now.
Thanks
Garrickus.
Could it be possible that your phone had synced with G-mail 50 minutes before you sent yourself an email, and then you received it 10 minutes later, after the scheduled hour?
BUMP
go to email account settings and check if it is showing any errors. happened to me once. I re-entered my username passoword and the error went away. Perhaps this is due to Google getting very picky these days as many gmail accounts are getting hacked.
Why not just leave it in 'push' mode? Unless you have a lot of emails every hour, push email uses less data than polling. Gmail's exchange activesync isn't exactly rock solid. Back in WM 6.xx days, I have to reset my account every few weeks.
Hi there,
although i told to check every 15 Minutes the phone doesn´t check for new mail.
Running Android 4.0.2 with the build in Email programm. It is an Imap account.
How can i force my phone to have the Mails checked?
Thanks in advance.
It's IMAP, mail is pushed from the other side.
Powered by Galaxy Nexus™
Thats wrong:
IMAP doesnt mean its push mail (that ist P-IMAP which the original poster didnt mentioned directly)
IMAP means all Mails are on the mail-server and managed there, even folder. THe advantage of imap is that the mails are stored at one place but can be managed from different clients.
That doesn´t solve the problem of not syncing. But perhaps someone else do have an idea? As i have the same problem here.

I just found out that other mailclient (i have tried k9 so far) have the ability to check imap in user defined intervals.
So you have to try another mail client...

IMAP works for me with the built in e-mail client. I have it syncing to my school's outlook express account (.edu address). I have it syncing every 15min and after some messing with the settings/certificates I have sending working as well.
If I had to offer advice I'd say that you should double check your incoming/outgoing server settings and the appropriate certificates/logins are set up.

I gave up on the native email apps a long time ago. I've been using the Gmail app for all my accounts for over 2 years now: http://www.androidcentral.com/using-gmail-your-own-personal-push-mail-server
good luck
BTW, it will probably save you some battery power too.
Hi,
yes the k9 mailer fits my needs. Works fine so far.
Perhaps i´ll try gmail as well.
Thanks a lot for the help.
Bye
