Turn off Activesync ? (use USB w/o Activesync) - HTC Excalibur

How can leave my Dash connected to the PC/USB but turn off Activesync (4.5) ?
The reason to do this is to allow my Dash to charge off the USB while I am using its WiFi connection (whenever I connect the Dash up to the USB, Activesync jumps in and that shuts down the WiFi connection).
Thanks.

Just check that you haven't configured an AS profile for your device or delete the configured one.

Try "WM5torage"
Makes your device a usb mass storage device and stop AS doing it's stuff. It does make your card unreadable by other software while running so you may want to bear that in mind when doing whatever your doing with your wireless.

Can't you just go into the connection settings in ActiveSync and disable the USB connection?

Yes, that does work. Thanks... its what I want to have happen...

OK I haven't tried this myself ( I do Wm5torage) but here's another link:

There's loads of other useful stuff at that site as well.

ActiveSync via wifi is awsome, but one question remains

I managed to finally figure out how to use activesync without having to use a cradle. So far I haven't had the troubles that I have had when I used the cable and cradle. No more inactive activesync, can't synchronize errors, and having to restart activesync every few hours or so.
I managed to have activesync running for 2 days straight without any problems and restart of any sorts. This leads me to beleive that using wifi with activesync is more stable than using a usb/cradle.
My question is, can I completely abandon the USB/cradle when upgrading ROM, app installs, or anything that has to do with using the cradle and usb cables?
I don't know the answer for certain but I should think so.
What I need to know is how to sync using wifi without it trying to access GPRS instead.
Any ideas?
My 2s is configured to access wifi first (I think the setting is under the wifi config). If wifi isn't available, then it tried to access GPRS. My carrier charges an arm and a leg to use gprs, so I never configure the phone to access my carrier's GPRS. I rely on free public WIFI access and my home WIFI access to do all my internet jobs.
You'll still need the USB for ROM updates; everything else you can do over WiFi or BT.
wifi
Hi nomad,
im trying to configure my laptop wifi (peer-to-peer) and 2s. My 2s can connect to laptop wifi but the activesync is not performing connection or no connection at all. appreciate your help.
thanks.
@3waygeek, Thanks as I have not tried update anything since I pay a service to upgrade my things on my PPC. Sprite also does not like to backup via WiFi. I had to connect the PPC to the cradle.
@hoobas, I have WinXp/Sp2 installed. I have not had any problems connecting other than the occasional ActiveSync annoyance when I'm connecting with the USB cable. I'm sorry that I can't help you. I have not experience your problems so I can not give you a diagnosis.
wifi and MS Activsync
hi nomadman
can u let me know how u set up wifi to sync activesync? i have a WLAN at home and cannot see where the option is to use wifi to sync MS Activesync.
I also want to get away from having to use the cradle each time i want to sync . AT present i am doing it using infrared which is ok but like u said wifi must be better.
Also, i have two machines (a laptop and a desktop) in my wifi network. Desktop is hardwired and laptop hangs off wirelessly. How will my xda IIs know which machine to sync with?
cheers

ActiveSync starts automiatically on USB, serial, and Bluetooth connections. You'll have to use the ActiveSync link located on your PPC to connect to the PC via WiFi. This is assuming that ActiveSync does work on both your PPC and desktop. So it's best to connect to ActiveSync at least once via cradle before going ActiveSync via WiFi.
Only install ActiveSync on either your lappy or your deskop, but not on both. One limitation with ActiveSync is that you can not use more than two partnerships without some fiddling around with your PPC and your networked PC.
About Cradle ActiveSync.
Uninstall ActiveSync -> Reboot PC -> Reinstall Active Sync 3.8 and don't touch any thing or open any programs while installation is in progress.
Mine is working like a charm

How did you do it?
I've used the search function but I couldn't find anything about it.
Thanks,

OK, got it to work, too. Very nice
But I had to set my Network Connection from "Internet" to "Work".
Is it possible to use both settings? My Wireless LAN connects also
to the internet, so I won't switch everytime I want to sync or surf.

In the network settings of yr phone, enter the ip address of machine you want to sync with as WINS server. That will tell yr phone which machine it has to connect to. You can set up peak and offpeak timings in the mobile schedule of activsync on ye PDA, so that it can sync every 10 or 15 mins .
Sorry if my question is too noobish. I have read so many articles talking about establishing wifi sync between a wifi enabled PPC and a wifi enabled PC, but havent been able to do yet. Do i have to have another software to enable the connection ?
Can any one please explain slowly and in detail how you could do that, i've been searching for quite a long time but still no result. And 1 more question is that after i can sync through wifi between my O22s and my laptop, does it affect the wifi connection of my laptop and my O22s? A bit silly right but i'm a new user and i'm not in IT field also. Thanks for any suggestion from you guys.
@azeemakhtar,

@ducga,
1. Install ActiveSync 3.8 on your lappy or PC, but not on both.
2. connect to activesync via cradle first.
3. remove unit from the cradle and reset.
4. click on the ActiveSync link on your PPC and tap on the Sync button.
* The above procedure should be able to get activesync working via wifi as long as there isn't a setting problem in your router managment or firewall.
* The above precedure should work if your are able to connect to the interent on your PPC via wifi.

I also have to do the following:
3a. Click Start / settings / connections / Network cards
3b. Select Network Adapters
3c. Change 'My network card connects to' from 'The Internet' change to 'Work'
3d. Close, reset (for luck)
3e. Open ActiveSync on your desktop PC, select File / connection settings / and tick allow Network Ethernet !!
4. Now when you click on the ActiveSync link on your PPC and tap on the Sync button - it won't try to use GPRS to connect and WiFi will be listed as your Work connection.
I always have to change my network card settings back to 'The Internet' before I can browse again.

Go to ActiveSync on your XDA, click tools, options.
It will say "When syncing remotely with a PC Use this PC:"
It should list the network name of the PC you currently have a partnership with. i.e. "TOMSLAPTOP"

Networking questions

1. With my old PDA (Magician) I could browse Internet through my PC using USB cable and ActiveSync. Now, with my Artemis I cannot. Althought it's connected by cable, always tries to go GPRS or EDGE when I open Internet Explorer and go for a web page. What's wrong? (Browsing the web by WiFi goes well, so it's not a problem at home, but there is no wireless LAN in my office.)
2. I can sync my Artemis with PC Outlook software by cable or by Bluetooth without any problem. Would it be possible somehow to sync by WiFi as well? Presumably it would be quicker than Bluetooth.
cheers,
ctibor
For your works PC check what version of Active Sync is installed, I don't have the Orbit but both my HTC Artemis and MDA-CIII will connect and surf the net via a cabled connection - can't comment on sync over Wi-Fi as I have never bothered with it. I find it easier to plug the devices in each night to sync and charge - Mike

Yes, it IS ticked.
But anyway, thanks.
on device
start>settings>connection>wifi>network adapters
set 'my network card connects to' to 'the internet'
on pc
open activesync
file>connection settings
set 'this computer connects to' to 'the internet'
should be all fine then.

Why can't I access data services while charging on PC?

...and more importantly how do I fix it.
When my Excalibur automatically tries to access data services while plugged in I always get a message about not having the right settings.
And on ActiveSync on my PC in the Microsoft Exchange part it says "Attention Required", and when I click on that it says something about checking the data settings on my device.
By default when you connect to active sync your dash uses your PCs connection. If your PC doesn't have an internet connection then you wont be able to use the data connection while plugged in via usb. Activesync has a setting that allows you to use your devices wireless services while plugged in via usb.

Well I do have an internet connection, so I guess something isn't set up correctly. What would that be?
And what is this setting to allow me to use my EDGE connection?
In activesync go to file > conection settings > Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop.

Nope, didn't work. I have that checked off and I still can't connect while plugged in.
can't access data while chargin on pc
Yes I started having the same problem after I changed to the new HTC ROM. My settings are correct on activesync.
Similar issue...
Hey,
I believe I'm having a similar problem and rather than starting a whole new thread I just thought I'd mention it here. I have a wireless connection router in my home, and generally it works fine for all of us. However, everytime I plug my phone in (since upgrading to ricky's rebake of kavana's ****40) my wireless connection goes all haywire and bumps me off. Then, even after I've unplugged the phone for a while, it is still a little weird until I reset everything, restart my pc and all. Any thoughts?

You want it checked to use EDGE while connected to your PC.
If you are using T-mobile data plan(19.99/mo) you will need to delete the 2 proxy entries under connections to make edge work right after using the HTC connection setup wizard. I think those proxy entries are for if you have the 5.99 t-zones plan. I had to delete them, and set my t-mobile data connection to Connect to The Internet to get my apps working right after upgrading.

share intenet TO my HD through USB and Activesync?

HI
I'm trying to share internet using the USB cable and activesync, I already configured my internet connection to share it with the new "local area connection" created when the HD is plugged in, but it doesn't work!
and by the way my computer has an IP:192.168.1.X, but the local area connection has an IP:192.168.2.X
really I even don't know if this is possible, but I did it with my old palm then I thought it can be possible.
thanks!
Using usb or bluetooth with activesync will share in automatic the PC internet connection without the need to set internet connection sharing on the pc

Either with OR without my HD can't see the internet connection on PC with active sync over USB.
Huh
I just plug my HTC Touch HD into the usb port and select "Internet sharing" and it comes up straight away, even works from scratch on windows 7 cos i tested it!

All Messengers inactive when connected to pc

ok i have several instant messengers and programs ive been trying out and they all work fine as long as im not connected to the pc. once im connected to the pc using active sync or not, all IM programs stop working, cannot run resco file explorer to browse files and cannot recieve picture messages.
Is there a way around this?
Does your Micro SD Card appairs while connected to your computer ?
In ActiveSync there is a setting that says something like "Allow data connections while connected to pc." I'm guessing that the messengers probably use your data connection, so possibly try checking that off?

I'll give that a try at home but i seem to be having the same issue with my work computer and it doesnt have active-sync installed. I'm just trying to use the usb connection to charge the phone, which it is, but I still cant use messenger programs or file explorers until i unplug it.
Any other options i can look into?
and yes, my micro sd card is fully accessible from the computer when it is connected with or without active sync.
