8525 WM6 cingular exchange - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

so i just called to have a new 8525 sent out. Im running black 2.0 cingy....what do you guys think will happen? will cingular try to power on the phone and see its running wm6? will that qualify as voiding the warrenty? do you think they will charge me for the phone?

That wasn't the greatest idea you may have had before.
If they do turn it on, they will void your warranty. So, from what I've heard they will more than likely charge you full price for the replacement. ($600 or whatever it is now).
You really should have re-flashed your phone before sending it in... just pray they don't power it up.
(and if you bricked your phone from improperly flashing it, that's the risk you take from modding your phone, and you should have just taken one for the team.)
Good luck!

If you have not sent it in yet, re-flash with the Cingular ROM. Otherwise you will get a bill for $600.00

I agree with this, but the problem is, where is the original CINGULAR ROM? The "Cingular" ROM posted in the Wiki section of this site is actually an at&t branded ROM. The ROM that came on my 8525 purchased only a few weeks ago (and subsequent replacement) had a Cingular branded ROM (Cingy logo bootscreen, no anmiated boot, Cingy logo/background/icons on the Today Screen, etc.).
I was having issues with the backlighting on my phone so I took it up the Cingy store to have it exchanged. I tried everything I could do to keep the sales rep from booting up the phone, but he did and then couldn't understand how I got an at&t branded O/S on it. Luckily, one of the other sales reps said "Hey, look... We just got in a new Razr with the at&t badge and O/S!!". The sales rep I was dealing then said "Yeah, this guy's 8525 has an at&t O/S as well, but he bought his a couple weeks ago...". Needless to say, I played dumb and quickly made a mad dash for the door with my replacement handset before they could ask any further questions.
Anyway, it'd be nice if someone could find and post the Cingy branded ROM. Maybe it's already on the site somewhere and I just didn't see it...??

Well Cingular = AT&T now so as long as it was a released AT&T rom you are good, though I am guessing it wasn't. You can download the roms by going to www.cingular.com clicking on support (make sure 8525 is your phone) then click on HTC site link.
Once there select cingular as the carrier and 8525 as the model, click software/downloads
and click download.
Easy.

Here is the "official" cingular ROM currently released to the public .. straight from the HTC support website.
Now, whether you can simply run the RUU and re-install this over Black 2.0, I am not really sure ... others will have to weigh-in on that one.

Or goto htcamerica.net and all the carrier roms are on there too.

Allright,
as with the last poster, go to www.htcamerica.net and reflash. Because as a cingular representative, I can tell you that there is a 50/50 chance not in your favor that they'll deny your warranty exchange and send you a $600 phone bill.

I have a feeling one of the fine folks on this site will know here to get it if you can wait a little bit before sending it in. If not, I'd at least flash it down to the at&t/Cingy WM5 ROM. At least it will be their ROM and the correct WM release. You can play dumb like I did if they question you about it. Just say that's how it came from the store. If they push you on it, say something like, "First, I'm offend by your perveted comment!!! I have no idea what 'flashing' or this ROM you speak of is. Second, are you telling your store sold me a used phone?? Well then I either want a replacement ASAP of I want all charges refunded immediately!!". Push it back on them.
You should be fine putting the old version on. I worked for me at least...

Wow, I guess I'm sloooow to pull the trigger. Lot of answers already.
Yes, I know Cingular = at&t. However, that didn't keep the Cingular rep from questioning why/how I had an at&t branded ROM. I assume the phones with the at&t ROM will have the at&t brand/logo on the shell. Not a Cingular logo on the shell with the at&t ROM. I assume this would waive a red flag to the warranty repair folks...

If you've flashed HardSPL, you'll also need to downgrade to the stock Cingular SPL 1.06.

That was the other piece I was forgetting ... if folks really want to get their device back to its out of the box crappy state.
Since I have never tried to downgrade my SPL, I am not really sure how to do it (though I bet the answer is on the wiki).

There is a STEP BY STEP Guide to down grade to WM5 (orig cingy) and then read more of the thread and it will tell you what you need to do to get the SPL back to orig cingy too. Same should go for IPL if you managed to upgrade that as well.

WM5 stuck in bootloader(white screen)

hi. I went to the bootloader screen and I updated my Blueangel. and then i pressed the record and camera buttons and could see the options and then pressed the messaging button but then it gets stuck at the white screen. I can go back to the serial mode update my rom again buit it doesnt change the outcome. Ive read all the posts about mtty with the bootloader ect. I have also tried different ROM downloads but all the ones i try dont work. Any help is appreciated. My parents are being dicks and won't let me use the insurance we have set up cause it costs 50 dollars oh whipppeee thats a lot huh. anyways i cant get another phone so i need to figure this out. Anyone have any ideas?
Did you cooked you own rom? If so, your rom is too big. Try to upgrade to an already made rom or downgrade to wm2003 and try again.

First off, this kind of thing is one of the reasons M$ cracked down on the site with it's custom ROMs IMO, people causing the carriers too much grief and money replacing phones with corrupted ROMs that the carrier did not provide.
Second, Verizon is CDMA, not GSM. The only WM5 ROM available is for GSM, not CDMA. That's probably why you messed up your phone.

Oh, that's original, calling me names.
My point still stands. That kind of thing is probably a large factor of why the carriers complained to microsoft and why microsoft cracked down on sites such as this.
Thanks for being part of the problem.

8525 reverting back to ATT rom

I am interested in trying on of the cooked Roms on my ATT 8525, however I am concerned about converting back to the ATT rom. I would like to use the K's WM6.0 Lite FINAL from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=350695
Can I just run the ATT WM6 install like I did when I upgraded from WM5? Or do I need to do something more complicated?
I am sorry for my newbishness, I do not do a whole lot with WM devices, I am mainly a server/pc/network tech.
Thank you for your help,
Gihzmo
it can be done pretty much exactly the same.
ive actually reflashed an att rom back onto a phone after having several roms, and sent the phone back to get it replaced with the warranty

HardSPL is one of the greatest gifts, as XtreMe_G says. Actually I can't imagine not HardSPLing, why take a chance....
I paid $500 buckazoids for my 8525, with the 2 year. Explaining a "brick" to my wife (much less Cingular) when I had the means to not brick... I don't think so.
As a precaution, it's always worth reading MrVanx's Hermes Upgrade Guide
Thank you for your help, I got the new rom on the phone with almost no trouble. I had some issues with my direct push email. But I fixed that by removing the proxy that was set.
This is much, much faster then then the rom I was running before (ATT WM6 release).
The only other problem I seem to have is the weather doesnt seem to want to connect, I looked it up and figured out the code for my city (Danville VA USA) I used NAM|US|VA|DANVILLE
This works if you go through the Accuweather website, but it doesnt want to connect through the phone... anyone have any ideas? The phone goes out to the internet fine, getting email and browsing.
there is plenty of threads about this including this one

dude where did you get your original ROM for verizon?
there's a post in the stickie section of the vogue upgrade forum at ppcgeeks ... has all the stock roms ... no vzw radio though
Are the techs actually looking at the Radio version? I have a vogue that I bought for the 30 day guarantee and it looks like I'm going to return it. I flashed to the Sprint Radio, then flash the VZW ROM. Can't tell except for the 2.13 R.
I can't see that they would have the time or the effort to be looking at radio versions, especially since there are no updates out.
They just click on
settings , then click
on device info and
the rom & radio are
right there .
They caught me when
I took my 6700 in .
They caught you? What percentage of Verizon customers have the knowledge or the equipment/software to unlock and change the radio on their phone. It such as remote possibility out of the majority of customers, that I think checking the radio version would not be a priority.
Not to mention, what techs actually have the training to be able to tell what phones are allowed to have what range of radios installed?
I find it hard to believe that they caught you without you letting on you modded the phone somehow.
Not sure if its true or not but I was told that even if the store replaces your phone, if something is found on a later inspection they can charge you for the phone. They simply don't have the time to check everything in the store.

Hey man, I have talked to techs that have flashed their phones
with some of these roms. Alot of the techs read these forums just
like you do. There are VZW techs answering questions in these forums,
they don't usually id themselves.
By the way , the 6700 had WM6 on it not the stock WM5 , easy to see.

You can't go back! Not exactly sure how your gonna pull it off. Someone else said they changed the startup images to look like the stock, but it's pretty risky. If you return it with any ROM, I would suggest cooking a new ROM to match as closely as possible. The only problem is, the Radio is changed, and the info will be displayed on boot up. I imagine at some point, someone would notice it.
Bottom line is, you've completely altered the device, which voided your warranty.
Warranty
Yeh, I knew the risks, maybe stuck with the Vogue.
I'm within the 30 days return for exchange time.
So what happens if they don't like my radio version?
They simply wont exchange it? Or do they close the account? Or do they escort me out back and shoot me?

No prob! But, if they do see you've altered it, depending on when they notice, will probably depend on their action. Who knows, maybe if you can make it look official, and they accept, then it's their fault for accepting and can't refuse down the road.
Personally, I traded in my 6800 for the device, because of the extra amount of memory. The only differences I see that really stick out is the keyboard and WiFi, both I could live without. But, I couldn't stand the small amount of memory. I would imagine the worst they would do is refuse the trade, I highly doubt they would terminate the contract.

This looks like a good link for 'fixing' your Verizon to close to original.
I finally found this after many searches and after posting here

I'm keeping the 6900, thanks to some tips about the lower memory size of the 6800. It is kinda frustrating to have to decide between a keyboard or more ram. But also the size of the 6800 would make it less pocketable, I want the keyboard, but the same size as the vogue....
Anyway if I do need to return this for some reason it would be great to have a thread on converting it so yes pls thanks.

i personally think touchpal is the best if you use 6.1 you need to use the 6.1 version or your phone will reset while texting i send around two thousand a month and traded my mogul for the touch for the more memory and believe me the touch is the one to have especially if you put alot of stuff on your device

Idea to get back to 3.70, possibly earlier?

Alright, not sure if this has been gone over or not. What would happen if a person complained enough to Sprint or HTC about how much they dislike the GB update, would they have a way to revert you back to Froyo. Tell them you are not at all happy with the new system and you want to undo the update. Would they just tell you to go pound sand? I am almost thinking it would have to be a direct complaint to HTC, not?
Send a email to H T C

Better yet, send them an email asking for them to put hot naked ladies for our backgrounds on our evos and also to root them for us. :-D

According to multiple sprint reps/techs that I have talked to, they do not have the tools to downgrade back to Froyo. Doubt calling HTC would help, they will probably just say since it is software, Sprint is responsible.

I guess I must have missed this somewhere, Sprint develops the software, not HTC? Now I'm officially confused!
been there, done that..
just go check out their tweeter feeds, lots of people DID complain
i personally spoke to a customer service guy , he fed me the "trying to downgrade would make your phone innoperable" line, and basically he said sprint doesnt have the capability to do it , and htc will simply claim not to be able to do it, you are welcome to do it though, enough complaining and maybe one of the higher ups decides its worht a listen , but to be honest, root will be here long before that happens, somone already found an exploit, its a matter of making stable and usable to the public

partly true in the sense that sprint has final say on what software to push through to their users, htc develops the sense and phones firmware, but its sprints call on what final os will the devices use, wich is why the bloatware is most of the time uninstallable as its "part of the os" wich sprint pushed, htc makes it but sprint has the final say on approving it and adding whatever the hell they want to it (aka blocking hotspot and such) wich is understandable since they are the ones that have to deal with the customer
Sprint is full of criminals. :-D HTC attempts to do the right thing. :-D Sprint just keeps blocking them. HTC and myself know EXACTLY how to do it. lol. However, we are required by contract law not to spread it do to issues related to lack of a normal customers knowledge. :-D Any of you actually program chips and design circuit boards? What we do, is we find ways around the software... They really go into the chip itself.

I called my local sprint store right after the ota and asked about downgrading back to froyo. The rep said that i would have to contact the local corporate store and that they could do it. So when i called they said "just bring the phone in here and we will get you back to 2.2" Now whether or not this is true, i dont know. I never took the ota so i'm still rooted. But for those of you that did take the ota or have a new evo you might give this a shot. Knoxville, TN

You are right about them being full of it. When I called again this morning they said absolutely not. She said that all of their software stuff has been updated to 2.3 but that if i had came immediately after the ota then she could have fixed it.
Here was HTC's reply:
Thank you for contacting HTC Technical support about the issues you are having with your device since getting the latest upgrade for it. I do apologize that you are having this issue with your device and I will gladly help you with this. There is no way to revert to the software version that was on the device before the update. I first suggest you do a soft reset by pulling the battery out for about 1 minute then placing the battery back in and booting up your device. If a soft reset does not resolve the issue then you may want to do a factory reset on your device to try to resolve the issue. Factory resetting your device will clear off your device and reset it back to factory settings. If factory resetting the device does not resolve the issue the next step would be to contact your carrier for possible repair or replacement of your device.
Man, that reply is nothing but a big middle finger from HTC.
