Best SIP Provider?? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

With VoIP Now Embedded Into The WM6 OS, I Was Wondering What SIP Providers Everyone Uses? Ideally I'd Be Looking For A Company That Offer Free UK Landline Calls, But This Is Not The Be All And End All. Could You Post The Links To The Provider You Use.Thanks
Cheers
P.S Sorry For The RePost, I Posted It The First Time In The Wrong Section

Yes I'd be interested to hear what other people are using. I am located in Canada and was wondering if there was anyone out there who could recommend a good Canadian Provider?
Thanks,
-Kai

Again as i said in the thread before, sipgate is a good one to use. You get a residential number to use for free also. Or you can opt for an 0845 or 0870 number (however might cost you loads!).
Works a treat on the Hermes was on the phone for ages hehe (probably for about 30pence )

Since we are on the topic of sip provider, is a realiable one in USA that I could like buy some credits on it and only use it when I need it but credit would remain forever until I use it all up or add some more to it using credit card online?
Thanks

I like FWD: http://www.freeworlddialup.com/
It doesn't talk to POTS directly, but it has established peering with a lot of other VoIP providers. The list of peering providers is here: http://www.freeworlddialup.com/learnmore/?p=features&s=accessnumbers#peering
I'm sure one of those can be used to have a number reachable from regular phones.

Would something like this can be set up and work on WM6 VOIP? http://www.sipphone.com/minutes/
Or any SIP provider you would suggest I should check out? USA based

sipgate is nice, but there's little use for a landline number on a smartphone, as you'll be reachable only while your device is turned on and connected to the internet.
IMHO the only relevant use of VoIP on Hermes is to place cheap (or even free) outgoing calls, where you have Wifi coverage.
Since I cancelled my POTS-phone two years ago and since then use only VoIP, I gained experience with serveral providers.
The chepest and best one is Betamax, which is a German subsidary of Finarea, a big Swiss carrier.
Betamax has 16 brands (freecall.com, internetcalls.com, lowratevoip.com, netappel.fr, poivy.com, sipdiscount.com, sparvoip.de, voipbuster.com, voipbusterpro.com, voipcheap.co.uk, voipcheap.com, voipdiscount.com, voipstunt.com, voicetrading.com, justvoip.com and webcalldirect.com), through which they offer their VoIP service. Except from justvoip.com and webcalldirect.com they all use SIP (server is always sip.brandname.tld) and so can be used with the Hermes.
The main difference between all those brands are the tariffs, the number of so called "freedays", which you'll receive for each recharging of credit and the free locations, you may call for free during the "freedays".
You'll find a price comparison at http://www.backsla.sh/betamax - the number of "freedays" and the free locations, where the "freedays" apply can be found on each brands website.
You'll need to buy an initial credit of € 12.50, which you can pay through many payment methods including PayPal and creditcards. This credit will never expire and you'll be able to use it for your calls at the given tariffs. Besides this you'll receive 30-120 "freedays" with each recharging (including the initial charging) - that means you may call certain countries for absolutely free in this period. As I mentioned those free locations and the number of "freedays" vary with all those brands.
I think poivy.com is currently the most attractive brand, which I've been using for 3 months now. Which one is the most attractive for you mainly depends on the countries you're calling, so check http://www.backsla.sh/betamax to find the chepeast one for you.
To register for one of their servies you have to download their Windows softphone (each brand has it's own client) and create an account through it. Unfortunately you can't create an account directly on the website. After your account is created, you may uninstall the softphone and use any other SIP client (you'll need the chosen username, password and the server, which is always sip.brandname.tld).
I must confess this sounds a bit complicated, but it works great and you can save a lot of money.
Beyond the cheap respectively free calls, you can also send SMS for € 0,05, place webcalls and some of their brands (e.g. voipbuster.com) also have a dial-through-service.
You can also use any mobile or landline number as CallerID for their VoIP-service (can be configured throught he softphone only).

I Checked Out The Comparison Chart And Your Right poivy.com Looks Pretty Good. But I Went To
http://www.voipbusterpro.com/en/
And It Says A Year Of Free Calls For 10euro Is This A Legitamet Deal, Or Will Freedays Still Effect It. As In Is That 365 Freedays Their Offering. If It Is I'm Signing Up To Them, If Not Then poivy Gets My Vote.
Cheers

In the UK... you can't go wrong with Sipgate.co.uk

US SIP providers
I've used Telasip and Viatalk. Telasip has been pretty reliable, but their pricing structure has changed and they are not as competitive as they used to be. Viatalk has an all you can eat plan for $229/yr, but they are offering a second year free. Therefore you only end up paying under $10 a month for all you can use service. It's a pretty good deal as long as they stay in business . If you're looking for pay as you go, I've heard that VoicePulse is pretty good. I've never used them but many Asterisk users swear by them.
Hope this helps.

Yes, VB Pro offers 365 freedays (see: http://www.voipbusterpro.com/en/faq.html#29) and it's a legitimate deal. But notice, that the free calls apply only to landlines. For British mobile networks e.g. VB Pro charges € 0,18/min, whereas PV offers those calls for € 0,12/min.
If you're going to call costing locations (mobile networks and some countries) and so use your credit, you should consider chosing PV, since you'll need to recharge anyway and so get 128 freedays again, which will be added to the remaining freedays.
VB Pro is only preferable, if you call free locations only.
What I forgot to mention: the free calls are limited to 300 minutes per 7 days, measured over the last 168 hours (not per calendar week). But even if you casually exceed those 300 minutes and so are charged € 0,01/min or so for those exceeding calls, it's still a bargain.
Also the prices given do not include VAT, which is 19% in Germany. Beyond that there's a small fee for the charge, so for a credit of € 10 you'll need to pay € 12,50.
@clublander
sipgate is always more expensive than poivy and has only the advantage of giving a free incoming landline number, but as I mentioned before there is little use of such a number, as your Hermes needs to be switched on constantly to be reachable.
Btw sipgate is a German company, too, and I use their service at home, but only for the free landline number. For all outgoing calls I use poivy.

Sorry for this delayed response - my phone had to make a round trip from the US to Europe for repair. Meant I was out the loop for a bit and I'm catching up on forum.
IMHO SIPphone is best avoided for the time being. They are also known for their GizmioProject. Same company, started with a hardware based emphasis as SIPphone but now development seems to be on their softphone - Gizmo.
Super-nice people and I hope they have a future. Unfortunately very serious call quality issues which made it hard to even know if my settings were ever tweaked right. They politely refunded all money I had spent in full with no hassles (despite having a stated no-refunds policy) so I have no complaints.
Seems that their own operation is small and that they contract with providers around the globe in a random way that does not really help calls. For example, you might possibly make a call from the US to Britain and it could get routed through a server in Singapore. Given that latency and jitter (delay that is varying and not constant so that voice packets arrive out of order) are major challanges in VoIP, having your data take an unnecessarilly long route really can't help!
I spent a lot of time trying to make SIPphone work (at home, hardware based, Cable Internet). Weeks. Gave up. Now use Callcentric dot com at home. Worth checking out. Much more DIY than Vonage and you use your own gear, they just supply service and support. Some super low rates, very responsive customer service (by prompt email replies) and no contracts. Call quality is not quite equal it to Vonage but runs really very close. They have 911 etc some they are a real home phone replacement service... currrently seeing if I can make it work on my mobile too, just starting on that.
HTH

For those who are based on Japan:
Did the IPphone provided by the ISP works? Like me, I have the OCN services with the DOTphone that is the VoIP service... Did it works as a SIP tp the Hermes phone? Or the Plala ISP, they have an IPphone too... did they work?
If yes, it should be great as almost all the ISP here have a VoIP service...

Its official, 02 charge for GPRS usage.

I just got a ****ing huge bill for GPRS usage. According to 02, I have used 33986kb on GPRS last month. This has cost be £80 extra on the bill.
According to a few posts I read last month on this forum (which is complete bul****) 02 do not charge for GPRS.
Someone claimed to be working for 02 and said 02 does not charge, I mean, what the **** was that all about.
Anyone else in the same situation right now? I am already broke, this is gonna get me into serious debt now.
I mean.. WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!
80 GBP and you cry?
c'mon, you've gotta be kidding me. If thats your problem, lol
I just got a bill for 1600 euros and I couldnt care less
life's a *****, deal with it
i work for my money you ignorant prat!
Put your money where your mouth is and take that "paypal" button off of your website..
My 2 cents (the only ones you're ever gonna get)
They haven't charged for GPRS usage so far, but it's not exactly surprising that they'd make an exception for someone who uses such a high amount of data. Obviously if you're sensible and don't go too far over your allowance it's not going to be charged, but if you flaunt the system you're going to raise some flags.
The bottom line is if you aren't prepared to pay for your GPRS usage, then don't use it. If you do use it and you don't get charged it makes a nice bonus, but you can't expect something for free and then complain when it's not.

ah yes and you have developed a website and spent countless hours on it too I guess?
I just think it is extremely funny someone can cry like a friggin baby over a 80 GBP bill
I am a student, I work weekends and have a limited budget yet I find time and money, which I spent out of my own pocket to help people. I dont want to get rich of it and I wont, since everyone has the same freeloading attitude like you do, but I dont want to spend truckloads on money either when the site is gonna attract more traffic
what did you do to help others btw?
lmao
If you think you can get something totally free in this world you must be from a different world... this is planet earth and we have something called Multi national companies who are greedy!
Come on... O2 giving GPRS for free... yes, they did have a promo, but you have to be responsible for your own actions... check it out with O2 first - phone them or check out their website.
If your money is worth so much to you should be responsible when you spend it.
w3rd up
£80 is over a weeks work to me as I have to work for free in a solicitors and study atop my normal job and would be crippling debt. It would take me a month to pay that off.
Anyway, as far as I was aware, we established on here that it was free, but if you go overboard 02 would clock on, and that they could choose to bill you for the lot if they want. So think yourself lucky they only charged you one months usage!
I only use about 2.5mb a month maximumand they haven't billed me yet. How did you use all that anyway? Your phone has WiFi, and in any town you're never more than 20 meters away from an unlocked network!
well i have heard of one guy getting charged for gprs but he was streaming radio and video. i think he got hit hard £300+
im on o2 and it has been a relief so far (touch wood) that i haven't been charged.
i would prefer for o2 to charge but at a fair rate, or even offer a package where for x amount you get y.
Let me get this right, you took the word of the people on here but you never checked with O2. You then proceeded to hammer your account because you thought you were getting something for nothing. It reminds me of a guy I saw in one of those "Eat all you can for a fiver" cafes, the fat bastard gorged himself like a pig at a trough and then said to his buddy "that ****ing food gave me indigestion". You have to pay the piper my friend.
Good luck to those who have not been charged (yet), but don't complain if you get a bill - if you use it you should pay for it!
I pay for my GPRS as an addition to my normal tarriff & it pains me a little to see some people getting it for free, but I suppose if I knew I could get it for free, I wouldn't be too quick to sign up to pay for it
O2 (UK) do offer a reasonable GPRS package - I pay £14.50 + VAT (=£17.04) for my O2 Data36 bolt-on to my monthly contract. It gives me 36Mb/month (more than enough for my needs) and extra data is £0.85 +VAT (=£1.00) per Mb. You'll find these tariffs under the business sections rather than the persoanl tariffs.
I know T-Mobile & Orange have similarly structured GPRS bolt-ons - prices & amounts of data vary etc, but the concept is the same.
I do think the providers are missing out by not offering a lower entry price e.g. £6 for 10Mb or similar.
I also use the same 02 bolt on package.
There is something strange in that i havent yet been charged for any over mb that I knew I had gone over And their computer is registering I am using it and logging the times , but it shows no data actually used.
sounds like a fault with their computers, but I am sure this will be fixed.
I made the mistake of using the internet on my old P800 in America. BIG phonebill.
TBH, as I said earlier, I puposely bought a phone with wifi so that I only only have to use GPRS as a last option. Seriously, ANYWHERE I have ever been, I have never had to walk more than 40 metres to get WiFi connection to the internet. Some other poor sod can pay for my usage
I was with O2 until July. I roam a lot and used the Internet a lot. I was never charged. Not even the minimum daily GPRS roaming charge listed on their website. I was lucky.
I think it may be down to your account provider. Even though the bill comes from O2, O2 has a number of account providers such as Carphone Warehouse or Tesco Mobile.
I originally signed up with BT Cellnet and my provider was Securicor Mobile.
I am not sure how account providers work but it is just a thought.
Hi
O2 were giving me free GPRS when it first went on line and it seems to still be free, though there was a period they were charging me and my bills were high, especailly for GPRS usage on my 3 and half month round the world tour when i roamed!
When we take a contract out for anything these days it is our repsonsibility to check that it suits us and if not, change. Occasionally O2 may not lead the providers with the best offers but like everything it swings in roundabouts and at the moment they seem to have good deals and popular.
Have to say that there XDA website support and updates are a bit thin.
I am with O2 and have been for 6 years without changing provider.
I was made an O2 'Select' customer which i believe they are no longer registering new customers as. This means that you are one of their top 200,000 users... did not think i would qualify.
They give me special offers like answering customer service calls 'IMMEDIATELY' and no queuing, free itemised billing, 60% discount off mobiles and accessories, new handsets before everyone else, and recently i swung a free XDA2i out of them that should have been £180.
From everyones comments above seems like our mate noddy with the £80 bill is the only one who can't manage his money!

So erm...
how much data does msn messenger use then ?
:S
any idea how i could work out my costs on it :s ??
My Daft sister!
My dear sister uses T-Mobile. She decided that now she had broadband, she'd download Nortan Antivirus etc. She was so worried about connecting her laptop to the internet without this software, she decided that it would be more secure connecting to the internet via her GPRS enabled mobile phone to down load it! Anyway, £350 worth of GPRS later, the file still would not download all the way through. The phone account was locked out when it hit the £350 limit. T-mobile, once they'd stopped laughing were very sympathetic and agreed that she could repay them in installment over several month. She has incoming calls only and has had the GPRS disabled!
im very sorry for her, but that story is just hilarious

Using Orange sim with O2 ROM

Hi folks, this is my first post here so go easy on me, you all seem to know your stuff!
I've got an unlocked XDA Exec and I've upgraded the ROM once from the O2 website.
When I do a soft reset I see:
R.1.04.02
G.42.37.P8
D.1.13.82 WWE
I'm sure that will mean something to most of you. I assume the R stands for the radio version.
I have recently changed from an O2 PAYG sim to an Orange contract, and just want to know if there would be any benefit to changing to an Orange ROM (or iMate, Qtek etc)
(I don't need push email by the way - I'm happy to poll my gmail every 30 mins.)
P.S I am supposed to be on 3G but the little indicator at the top always says "G".
When I was with O2 it said "U" when I was in 3G range.
Any advice would be much apreciated.
Personally I'd upgrade that ROM, not for push email, but for general bug fixes and to get Radio 1.09.xx The newer ROM seems more responsive too.
As for changing to the Orange ROM, I'd say definately not. Orange have a bit of a reputation for releasing the worst versions of phone software, and unless you actually need things like line 2 there will be no benefit. The only thing you will need to do is enter the connection settings for GPRS, MMS and redirect the answermachine number.
As for the 2.5g (G) instead of 3g (U), I would be amazed if there was somewhere that O2 had 3g coverage but Orange didn't as O2's 3g coverage is still poor in comparison. Just check that under start -> Settings -> Phone -> Band that the network type is set to auto and then under Network that your current network is UMTS Orange.
Thanks Gajet, I'll probably upgrade to the latest O2 ROM then.
With regards to my phone Band etc - it is set to auto, GSM Band is "EGSM+DC1800" and UMTS Band is "UMTS 2100"
Under the Networks tab, my current network just says Orange.
If I look under preferred networks, there are 2 called Orange, 1 called @Orange, Orange CH and Orange F.
And you're sure the SIM is a 3g one? What phone if any did it come with? Working from memory I think Orange 3g USIMS are green and Orange 2.5g SIMs are white, they may have a g at the start of the printed number too, but that might be O2 I'm thinking of.
My sim is purple :?
I specifically asked Orange for a 3G sim, but I guess that's no guarantee they sent me one. It came with the SPV C600, which I will probably be selling on ebay when I can be bothered.
There is no "g" anywhere on the sim card - I'll just have to call Orange and find out what is going on. I've only just had my old number ported over today, if I have to do it again I won't be happy - especially as I left O2 because their customer service was USELESS.

That's because Orange are crap. They claim to have UMTS (3G) coverage in Derby but I don't have it.
Changing your ROM won't make it work, sadly. And O2 have been actively extending their 3G coverage - I started off with no 3G coverage, then I had it at work, and now I have it at work and at home.
I personally use the latest QTek ROM and it runs very nicely for me though some people say it's unstable with some software packages - though I've yet to see a reliable list of which packages these might be. Provided Linux meets with my expectations (which I consider bare minimum for 'Joe Public') I'll probably be ditching Windows Mobile altogether - in which case the ROM will be completely manufacturer- and network-independant.

eeek Out of the Frying pan and into the blast furnace. Sorry mate all CS are crap nowadays and I'm afraid I would rate Orange as worse than O2 from personal experience.
They obviously have changed the colour schemes a bit with SIMs, but 3g USIM's were deffinately green. My suspicion is that they sent you a c600, looked at that handset and thought that you did not need a 3g USIM and have not sent you one. Defo phone em up to check, er don't be suprised if they say to upgrade to a 3g USIM costs £10, you can fight that one out with em.

I tried to email a billing query in to O2 and they replied with bullcrap about reading usage data off the SIMcard. So I cancelled my Direct Debit and emailed them again to tell them that it would remain cancelled until the issue was resolved. 3 weeks later it was still unresolved and they had ignored all my emails. This month they tried to hit me with £43 (before VAT) of 3G data usage charges, having ignored my Welcome Browse & Download 5Mb allowance and having not updated my Usage online until after my first bill (thereby not allowing me to check my usage!!)
So I called them. They refunded the 14p for the text message to Romania as per my original billing query (I wanted to get that straight in case I find another 200 messages to Romania on my next bill and they try to use the defence that I didn't complain about the first one!), gave me £15 credit for the 5Mb of data I had been billed for wrongly, gave me a £10 "good will" refund and also provided me with an email address to make a formal complaint.
Oh dear. I didn't think anyone could be worse than O2! When I told O2 I wanted my PAC number to change my number to Orange, their "last line of defence" bloke offered me 1kb of data a month for free if I stayed with O2. I pointed out that I was already getting 1MB for free, which is actually quite a bit more. He said, "No, no kb is bigger than mb, I'm telling you!".
Anyway, I'd love it if Orange try to charge me £10 to upgrade to 3G seeing as I asked for a 3G sim in the first place. Any excuse to shout at them and get some money back!
I'll let you know how it all pans out, thanks for all the help.

Ever tried to talk to *any* broadband "support" people about Kbit vs Kbyte? Not a f#@king clue.
You should have asked for 1Gb!!
Well I spoke to Orange today and they confirmed that I have NOT in fact been sent a 3g sim card, despite the muppet on the phone assuring me that he would send me one with my new 3g phone.
As it turns out the phone isn't 3g either.
They told me I would have to cancel my current contract, start a new one on 3g and then transfer my number (again).
I was so angry at this point that I said a rude word  told them I was going to cancel my direct debit, my contract and tell everyone I know to steer clear of them.
Too harsh?
Maybe.
Fun?
Oh yes!
But now I have no idea which network to use. If anyone out there can help - I need about 200txts 60mins and minimum 20-30mb data per month, as cheaply as possible. Less than £30 would be nice, but I'm guessing unlikely.
If I can draw on some of your experiences it would be a great help.
Thanks in advance.
T-Mobile for the win at the moment I'd say.
Get a Flext tariff to suit your needs and have web and walk added onto it, that's unlimited 3G GPRS (2GB fair useage policy) £7.50 a month or if you want to use as a modem for a laptop it's web and walk pro at £10 a month extra. These data prices can't be even closely touched by any other network at the moment.
Flext 20 would allow you 200 texts, 60 mins voice and a further £2 worth of credit to use on either, add web & walk and your total bill would be £27.50 a month. If you were being cautious on the voice and text needs, there is a flext 25 which gives £60 credit to spread over voice and texts for an extra £5 a month.
OK typing this I feel sick to have to keep on paying O2 what I currently do.
Thanks Gajet, I stumbled on to the T-Mobile site and snapped up the flex, web and walk offer thing. They say in the small print that VOIP, P2P filesharing and video streaming is not allowed but email and browsing is fine, which all suits me, and apparently the reception with T-Mobile is pretty good.
How would they know if I was using VOIP though? Doesn't it all just look like data traffic to them, or can they monitor what programs you are using?
I also just spoke to O2 to see if they could entice me back with a decent offer. Needless to say, their data prices for non-business users are ridiculous compared to T-Mobile, so I politely declined, which is unusual for me - but the girl did have a very nice voice. 8)
Looks like I'm finally sorted.
This forum is great, thanks to all for your help!
Also keep in mind that instant messaging software is currently not allowed, however I believe there would be a way round that in using web based system that sends replies to you as texts.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/11/t-mobile_voip_ban_responds/
I'll probably just stick with plain old sms and email for now. It sounds like t-mob will be introducing their own IM client at some point, but to be honest I'd prefer to use google talk.
Actually, thinking about it, you can access your google talk history from within gmail, but i'm not sure if you can actually use IM from within the browser. I'll have to test it out at some point.

Well its still showing under my options. But it looks like its not working when i try to connect using IE. Anyone able to connect still?
for those that dont see Tmobile web service, change your phone to a non-smartphone/ppc model. I believe you will then see the option.

that is correct. change your phone model and the service will appear...
go to change phone options and choose a basic phone.
I saw that before too but the phone model change fixed that problem.
I had the same problem. My Dash got stolen, so I briefly tried a blackberry curve (lame).
After purchasing another Dash, I went to the website to cancel the BB service, and add the T-Zones back on. The T_zone option was gone, no matter how bogus of a phone I told mytmobile i had.
I made a call to a CSR and they knew exactly what I was talking about, "the 5.99 plan?" she said, right before addding it back onto my account.

Taking my TP2 across Europe and Internet charging ???

Hi Folks,
I am intending to use my planned TP2 abroad(from UK), most likely Europe. I will most likely be signing up to VF. However I have just discovered than international data charges are horrendous. Something like <£5/ < 0.5MB/ £5- 5MB etc. It is quite convoluted. I thought innocently that this would be a part of my roaming deal - no way....
Thoughts, Experiences, advice???
Sam
Earlier in the year I went to Portugal on holiday, and kept my iPhone in flight mode for almost the whole week. I found that I did not really need internet access all that much, and when I did need to use it once, I went to an Internet Cafe and paid a couple of Euro's for around half an hour.
VF have free roaming at the moment, till the end of August, which is great for calls and texts but unfortunately it doesn't include data.
They have a few data plans though, if your looking for heavy usage aboard they are probably quite good value, just give CS a call they'll explain. (Make sure you call VF Business CS, they are very helpful!)
data roaming (as opposed to voice roaming) is handy only if you need to access the Internet on the move constantly
why not consider locating café with free wi-fi hotspots as an alternative? or are they hard to come by in europe?
Yes you are right. One could of course use Wifi with the TP2 !!!
I will also ring Business CS to enquire...
Thanks,
Sam

Help with Tilt2/Att while traveling Europe

Anybody have any great tips or pitfalls for using Tilt2 while traveling? I will be in France and Portugal for 3 weeks and will need to call the states a bit.
BEFORE you travel, make sure you call ATT (800-335-4685) and activate International Roaming. NOT International Long Distance, which is only for calling from US to other countries (this is a very common mistake). International Roaming is NOT activated by default, so you must do this. But as long as you activate it, you should be fine.
Keep the number for ATT International Support (+1-916-843-4685) handy in case you have trouble (800 numbers don't work abroad). Even if you get no service on your Tilt, you can call the number from your hotel phone, and the ATT rep will call you back right away so you don't get big $$$ charged on your hotel phone. Its possible even if you activate international roaming that you will not have service due to issues on ATT's end, the system is far from foolproof. This happened to me the first time I tried to use my ATT phone in Japan. But usually a 5-minute call to ATT will get you fixed up. This was a one time occurance, never happened to me again on multiple subsequent trips to Japan.
Call from France and Portugal will be fairly pricey, $1.29 to $1.99/min (see below). You can activate World Traveller, which is $4.99/month, and discounts the rate to $0.99 and $1.29/min, and you can add/delete this feature whenever you want, so you can just activate if for the month you are travelling. Texts are $0.50 each to send (free to receive), which is a great way to communicate while travelling.

You will get charged the per minute rate whether you are sending or receiving the call. People calling from Europe to your phone will be charged as if making a long distance call to the US. People in the US will be charged as they normally would if you were in the US.
Another option if to SIM unlock your phone and use a local prepaid SIM card. Its often cheaper this way, but you will not have the same phone number. If you call ATT and tell them you are travelling abroad and want the unlock code, they will usually give it to you.
Most of what you need to know about international roaming is summarized on this thread:

Also be aware that while you are abroad, you phone will act as if you were calling from a European cell phone, in terms of dial pattern. Calling to a number in France will be the same as if dialing from a France landline. Calling the US will require you to dial as if you were calling from a Europe phone number to the US. Dialing patterns can be determined at the site below. Also, the "+" key is your friend (see #4 on the webpage I linked directly above).

European prices can vary quite a bit from country to country, and even within a country. My recommendation would be to spend less time in the expensive cities, and more time in some of the cheaper towns and countries. A couple of months on the beach in Portugal would be pretty awesome.
I'm assuming you're from the US? Have you considered a year in each place? You can get flights for $700, which I assume is a drop in the bucket to what you'll spend over the course of 2 years.
Thanks

Redpoint lists some good advice. I spent two weeks in Europe about 3 years ago, and had international roaming enabled on my Tilt (HTC 8925). It worked fine; came in handy when I ended up missing some flights due to delays. But the rates are certainly higher. I ended up with a phone bill about double normal, so be mindful of how much calling you do. You might enable international texts; I got a pkg of 50 I think when I went to Asia, which was cheaper than phone calls...
