Emulation Tools - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Is there a good, simple to use emulator that will allow me to check out different software and roms?

Are you talking about a Windows Mobile 5 of 6 emulator?!? Heck just try out different ROMs in combination with your phone man, like we all do

Have you downloaded the WM SDK from Microsoft yet?

No not yet, keep meaning to check it out, will it let me install packages and test them?

Packages?
If you mean programs then yes, you can install and test them with Microsofts SDK. Its possible to "cradle" the emulator like a real device and sync it with your computer.
WM6 roms you have to test directly on your device but don't be too afraid, its not that bad. Of course you have to test at least 3 different roms so don't forget to backup your data and be prepared for some sleepless hours And as murphys law is omnipresent you should have a second phone. Just in case.....

LMAO Yes I'm getting an official Vario II at the end of April, I'm already running LVSW and patiantly awaiting the release of BE2. (Got this one on eBay but want to make best use of my upgrade discount).
BTW, I've already bricked my phone about 15 times over the last week, but thanks to OliPro's SPL it just comes right back up... have to read up on it before flashing not after, I already had my .nbh file ready on a spare card so took minutes to get back up.
Great to hear I can look at software and settings before installing so will be doing that so I can keep my phone up and running without changes as much as possible but it's a shame we can't ROM test too....

Step by Step from box to rocks

First let me apologize for the title of this thread, I really couldn't resist. I just bought a i-mate jasjam and have spent the last several days reading these forums, the wiki, and all the other places that clicking things here will take you. I want to say right out that EVERYTHING I know about the Hermes I learned from this site, and that I am a complete beginner, and please do flame away if i am wrong. I'd rather get insulted online than have a brick in my pocket.
THe one thing that there isn't in the wiki (that I found anyway) is a current, step by step for total noobies like me who don't know what to do first and get scared by dealing with more than three file types in one sitting, that uses the SD card method. It seems that the SD method is faster, easier (especially if you run Vista), and even a little safer that the "old school" RUU method.
Soooo, I'd like to write a new wiki page to this effect, and am more than happy to put in screenshots, links, host file downloads, etc. What i'd REALLY appreciate is if you senior types could take a look at this simple outline and tell me if there is something drastically wrong with it. After a good schooling I'll post a complete article with more copied info from the threads and complete sentences and punctuation and stuff.
PROPOSED "DAY-ONE, JUST OUT OF THE BOX CAN"T WAIT TO" UPGRADE
1.enter bootloader mode to check sp version
2.format an SD card to FAT32, checking card integrity and fixing errors
3.Use Winar to Extract the .NHB file from Hard-SP-v7.zip, transfer to SD card with card reader and rename to HERMIMG.NHB
4.put the card in the phone and enter the bootloader by pressing side OK, Power, and soft reset button (with stylus). Once in bootloader mode accept the upgrade
This safe-nates things up, and CID unlocks the phone, right?
5.re-format SD card to FAT32, checking card integrity and fixing errors
6. Use WinRar to Extract the .NBH from HERM_Radinly_1.41.00.10_CustomRUU, transfer it to the SD card and rename it HERMIMG.NBH
7. put the card in the phone and enter the bootloader by pressing side OK, Power, and soft reset button (with stylus). Once in bootloader mode accept the upgrade
8. check the radio version in system info
9. re-format the SD card for FAT32, checking integrity and fixing errors
10. Use WinRar to Extract the .NBH from WM6 ROM of choice, transfer it to SD card and rename HERMIMG.NBH
11. Put the card in phone and enter the bootloader mode as above, when in bootloader accept the upgrade. Follow instructions from mrvanx for activesync
12. transfer my CAB files for applications to (Temp?) folder on card and then run each of them to install my apps (Skype, CeStar,TengoThumb, etc.)
Does this sound about right? Thoughts? Flames?
Thanks to all for such fantastic work, donations on the way for all who wrote files I have downloaded over the past few days, you guys rock!
whats with the SD card upgrading?
you can run HardSPL by itself, you dont have to extract and put the nbh file on ur storage card.. unneccesarry steps if you ask me..

Well, I run Vista, and I like the idea of not having to fiddle with the drivers in order to do RUU, and I saw a few posts that some people had difficulty getting things to work with Vista. Also, posts have led me to beleive that it is faster to do it this way, which would lead to less chances of things going wrong (it's really hard to make Vista stop doing things in the background all the time). Also, there are already really awesome guides for doing it the RUU way, but not one for a complete SPL/Radio/ROM upgrade using this method, I think it appeals to a lot of people, including the dreaded Mac user. If it's not actually a good way please do explain, and finally, to me it just seems plain easier. I've only found a few posts that had troubles with the method and dozens that praised it. thanks for replying!!
Madcap, thanks for the input, I was going for continuity but I take your advice, keep 'em coming!!!
oh...you didn't mention Vista in your original thread.. lol .. best advice I can give you ... Throw vista in the trash.

Yep, I ll drink to that
ugh .. u mentioned the D work.. great.. now I'm going to relapse..
Step 4 does not CID unlock the device. It looks like it just installs Hard SPL which will allow the user to recover from a bad radio flash.
Of course this should not matter as there really isn't a need to CID unlock any more (unless you want to unlock/unhide your EXT ROM)
HardSPL just makes your phone Temporary superCID right or something to that effect.

Cool, it was my understanding that Hard SPL temporarily makes you super CID (as Madcap said) allowing you to flash on any ROM you want, for all intents and purposes is this not pretty much the same thing as unlocking? Not arguing, just trying to clarify. A lot of noobs know that CID is an issue and that they need to disable it somehow when they flash......
Please keep comments coming,Thanks!!!!
P.S. MOD, in my sleep addledness I think I posted this in the wrong place, should it be moved to the UPGRADE forum? THANKS!!
P.P.S. Drinking is the only way I can tolerate having a Vista machine, we all were so happy about getting our new laptops this year, and then we turned them on....it's like getting a christmas present in the shape of a new bicycle, but when you tear off the wrapping paper there's really a tetanus shot inside.
SUCCESS!!
I followed the OP steps (with very minor modification) and was able to go from a completely new, out of the box, never even put in a sim card phone to HardSP-V7, upgraded radio, new WM6 ROM (Schaps, this ROM is awesome, thanks!!!). All without using a cable or upgrading any drivers. From beginning of first download to totally upgraded was one hour. Why anyone would ever do this the old-fashioned way is beyond me, especially if you are running Vista. I'm making a tutorial and have collected the few little things you need to do this and will add a wiki article with pics ASAP.
Thanks to everyone for all the great info and hard work here, a complete noob like me can go from 0-60 entirely by reading this site. I am loving this phone more by the minute!!
A noob who has read the posts and wiki, and then created and tested a step by step routine for others like himself in order to address something that the wiki doesn't.

Sorry man, I just couldn't help myself. I am in love with Vista. No problems whatsoever with it. Have had it installed since it came out and never had to re-install. LOL
p.s no flames........please.
I love Vista. Its given my two year old laptop a new lease of life.
Hi mlalahoi,
I am getting a lot of issues after installing CE-Start. Played virtually with every WM 6 ROM arround and still experiencing freezing.
Have run Shadow and LVSW without CE-Start for couple of days and both ROMs was very stable and fast. After CE-Start lot of problems.
Will be nice to hear your experience with the Chinese characters

Did you download the 2.8 Suite from the mobem website here AND use thier installer to install TO THE PHONE (install to SD doesn't work)?
I had similar problems when I went through the process of getting my hermes to be dual English and Chinese. THe first time I tried to manually install some cab files I found on a chines forum somewhere, totally jerked my normally very good Shaps ROM. I ended up having to do a hard reset, trying to uninstall the cabs just caused an unrecoverable hang. Make sure you use the official, latest install program and install to the phone, mines been flawless ever since.
Without registering you don't get the dictionary, but you can get a really good free version of CEDICT for mobiles here, it allows you to search by pinyin w/wo tones, english, or chinese characters. If you have trouble getting it to copy-paste between other apps try this app from the Wiki.
I have a collection of good ppc Chinese learning tools, pm me if you want to set up a file transfer, and do check out www.mandarintools.com for all your CHinese computing needs, no affiliation, just a great site.
Hi mlalahoi,
Thanks for the links! Actually I was using all the time v2.8 of Ce-Star, including the original installer - never used cabs to install. I found that "my" version of Ce-Star package is 6KB less than the one you recomended - here might be the problem. During the weekend will flash a new Rom and will play with the "new" Ce-Star 2.8 -- hope it will rock
I am using the ppc version of 金山 (PowerWord) and it serves me well. My Chinese characters needs are very simple ones - to be able to reed text and e-mails in Chinese, and rarely to answer using characters.
Will send you feedback about stability of the ROMs with "new" Ce-Star

Better Safe than Sorry - Do Not Want to Brick My Phone

I very much want to upgrade my O2 Orbit Rom to either WM6 or the B&B developed by Tom. Right now it apparently does not have the UK WM5 on it; according to the Ebay seller I bought it from I would have to go to the Hong Kong site to get an "official update" but the seller claims it would be better not to do so as people are reporting losing their radio and bluetooth. So I have read and re-read through these threads. I hear stories of phones not working after being flashed so I want to be super cautious. Here is what I think I do:
1. Run USPL and wait 5 - 10 minutes until the computer reboots itself.
2. Run either RUU for Tom's B&B or run RUU_Artemis_O2_UK_3.4.206.2_4.1.13.28_02.67.90_Ship.exe
for the UK WM6 upgrade.
And I should be upgraded, right?
If I end up with huge problems, I think I can revert back to the original factory ROM with the file called:
Arteimg.nbh
But how do I run a nbh file?
Which OS is least likely to cause problems?
Please be gentle with me - I'm a 51 year old woman who is in love with my Orbit and can't live without it so I don't want to take any chances to turn it into a brick. On the other hand, I'd really like to have WM6 and can't get it from the UK d/l site because my S/N matches the Hong Kong site. I live in the US and I'm not sure if I want a Hong Kong OS. I have honestly read through these forums and tried to get all my answers here .... but I just want to double check before I make a big mistake and blow up my phone. Thank you all.

don't worry, just run the USPL tool, after running this tool, it will reboot your phone automatically... Than flash your phone with a WM6 rom or the B&B rom... And thats it... make sure you backup your contacts before you do the flash, cause it will wipe all your contacts from your phone.
If you don't like the rom you flashed, just run USPL again, and flash it with another rom or back to factory rom.
If you've got any probs, just let us know... there is a lot of wizards out here, who are willing to help. You also can pm me anytime. I'm glad to help if I can.

Anyway if you want to see how the Arteimg.nbh is used read this:

You'll need a SD_card to do it.
Good luck, but you wont need it as you seem to have done your homework and as co0lGadget says if you get stuck we'll give you a hand.

You probably do have time USPL take about 3 mins flash of ROM takes about 10-15
However these things are always best to do if you're not in a rush or desperate to get your phone up and running. Also if you put tom's b&b on you'll need about 30 minutes to just play with it

OK, I'm going to do it - soft resetting now. But before I take the plunge, will you wizards please tell me - will I have the least problems with the UK WM6 release (which I found posted here as I can't d/l it from the site) or Tom's B&B which looks very cool but seems to have caused problems for some people. I trust your judgement - please tell me what you think. And btw, even though I'm old I love gadgets and cool tricks, so TouchFlo looks awesome to me, unless it is going to cause problems when installing files etc as I've read here.

WM6 is ok but not that different from WM5 to look at and I guarantee that by tomorrow you'll have wanted to see what tom's rom is like and had to re-flash.
Since using toms rom i've been able to dump a lot of my third party software (mostly stuff from spb) and as you say it's very cool to looks at and will impress all your friends.
OK Tom's it is .......

Before I took the first step, I realized that my phone was not seeing my SD card. I decided maybe I had not seated it properly. I put it back together but this time it did not see my SD card or my SIM chip. You probably has the WM5 bug or something. With the WM5 rom, sometimes it will mess up your sd card with folders in strange caracters etc...
But you're right, if you want to do this, and its your first time, you better do it when you're not in the rush... just prepare good, sit back and relax, and the flash will be good ;-)
I'm not sure if I'll be able to get online tonight... cause my internet is shut off since friday, my provider can't tell me where the problem is, and how to fix it... So I hope tonight after work, I'll be able to get online at home. And be able to help you out if needed... so fingers cross...

I've been watching this thread and sorry to hi jack the thread. But, this was one of my questions about updating ROMS from original WM5. I haven't gotten the phone yet (P3300), but I want to upgrade it to B&B when I get it. Should I run the patch for the card corruption fix before I do the USPL and ROM flash? Or just go strait to the USPL and ROM update?
I've been reading for a long time but I'm still not very clear on what programs to use to flash and all that. I also want to be able to store my original ROM just in case I want to revert back to OEM. How do I do that?

I'll be using it on T-Mobile, USA. The phone will also be purchased in the US.
BTW, Just to clarify, I'm buying the phone from an online store, so the phone will be unlocked. I'll have to reconfigure it to work with T-Mobile SMS and T-Mobile Web service.
Just run the USPL tool and then the rom of your choice.
If anything does go wrong you can get an original wm5 rom from here

If you brick your device just go into the bootloader screen and run this it will get you back to wm5 and you can try again.

So I can't "dump" and store my own ROM? I have to download a dumped WM5 OEM from from someone else? I just wanted to make sure that I could put it back exactly the way it was just in case I needed to send it back or ship to HTC for repairs or something.
Also, will they be able to tell that the ROM was flashed and flashed back if I send it in for warranty repairs?

HELP! (noob)

Hi,
So i just got my MDA compact III (HTC Artemis) and I have noticed that people upgrade them to windows mobile 6.
Unfortunatley this is my first WM phone so I don't understand all these technical terms (ROM, Cooking, CID etc)
can anyone help me? is it worth upgrading? how do i back all my info up? what happens if it goes wrong?
thanks in advance.
COngrats on your new phone.
It is always worth it to upgrade to WM6.
There are 2 kinds of locks: CID and SIM.
SIM locks prevent you from using say a TMO phone on ATT.
CID unlocks prevent you from flashing a new ROM (like a wm6 distribution)
You can use some backup utility to well, back up. Search the forum for one.
If something goes wrong, you can just reflash the RUU, which stands for ROM Upgrade Utility. It has the "default" rom that you get from your new phone.
Thanks. This helped a lot.
Where do I get the WM6 distributions from? how do I install?
does the RUU come with the phone or do I download it from somewhere?
With all due respect to fzzyrn IT IS NOT ALWAYS WORTH UPGRADING!
Since this is your first WM phone and you just got it you should take a few weeks and get to know it.
There rule to follow here is: if it is not broken do not fix it!
WM 6 has only a few small new features (major one being HTML email support) which you may find you do not need.
First thing you need to do is to read the WiKi. You will find detailed explanation about terms like ROM, CID and SIM unlocking there.
Then if you are still determined to upgrade you should be aware of the following risks:
1) If you bought your phone through a cell company changing ROM even to an official version from HTC will void your warranty!
2) You must take care and read the instructions that come with the update you are using. Preforming update incorrectly, having battery run out or phone disconnected from your computer will result in a "bricked" (unusable) device!
3) Some WM 6 ROMs, change your device hardware ID. If you have purchased any programs that lock on to that ID during registration they will stop working.
Now for your phone there are two options:
1) Official update on HTC site (if I am not mistaking should be out already, but I am not sure)
2) "Cooked" or unofficial ROMs. Look for instructions in Artemis forum.
Keep in mind that ROMs are device specific. There is no such thing as generic / universal ROM.
Also keep in mind that various ROM versions including official WM 6 have different bugs. There is no answer to which is best or a guarantee that you like any of them better than your original WM 5 ROM.

Quick Advice Needed: I going from stock OEM WM6.0>Android

I have flashed phones before, (my TP2 runs android)
Sorry for the extra post, but I know someone has tried this.
I've read the stickies, there is ALOT of outdated info, dead links, etc..
***Whats the easiest upgrade route to get a stock WM6.0 Kaiser on Android?***
WM6.0>OEM HTC WM6.1 ROM>Android
OR
WM6.0>Custom WM6.5 ROM>Android
Which is the easiest/quickest way to get Android?
NAND or run Haret off the SD card?
I don't need a walkthrough just anyone's quick advice. Espicially, any trip-ups I might encounter regarding the radios and SPL versions.
Thanks
Sucessfully bricked the phone trying using Atools!
congratulations for not thoroughly reading the sticky topic about HOW TO COMPLETELY REPLACE WINDOWS MOBILE WITH ANDROID.
It Requires Radio version 1.65 or higher (which is only compatible with WM6.1 or 6.5)
It Requires HARD SPL Version 3.29 or higher (which is compatible with WM6.1 or 6.5) for the case you wanna flash on NAND
So either way, you gotta upgrade to WM6.1, HardSPL, Radio, then Go to ANDROID. Impatience often hurts. Android is blazing fast when installed on NAND (sys + Data)
So tell me,
Your phone is bricked in what sense? flashing using Atools is risky. I suggest go with RUU utility or SD Card. And I suggest you must consider a lil bit of reading first
Atools isn't a flash tool...
Thanks for the help, and I can sense your frustration. I make my living doing IT work. And, I'm not technically a newbie to the flash game. I've owned the PPC6700, Mogul, Touch Pro, and TP2. I've flashed them all. I've even contributed a sticky or two.
I admit I was rushed. And like a small child with a gun, I took a shot without fully understanding Atools.
Yes, I can only blame myself for my Kaiser's demise. To answer your question, the Kaiser is toast. It can't get bootloader and only has a blackscreen and one green light. Atools wins this round. But I'm not too concerened, I'm in a position where I have a nice stock of Kaiser's to fry before I need to peruse The DEFINITIVE MTTY thread.
Dark_prince, please don't blame my impatience entirely for the phone's death. Don't you think some of the blame definitely falls on me not being a bit smarter than 'ye old sticky thread (How to replace Windows Mobile with Android). Following that sticky verbatim will lead a WM6.0 user to HARDSPL first, and then update WM6.1. Ignoring that, the sticky also instructs users to use Atools, which requires it's own sticky.
In the passing year and a half since that sticky was updated, haven't newer versions of Android appeared with newer methods of installation that aren't covered in the sticky? Specifically, it's not clear to me where to find a newer Android installation tutorial that doesn't include Atools.
I'm comfortable that I could complete an Android-Haret setup running off the SD card, but I don't think performance would be acceptable. I want what you and others have

and I'm not above begging for your help to get it.
Now that I've burned one attempt, I need someone's input about how to proceed. Any help is appreciated....
In my usage case, I'm starting with an AT&T 8925 (Tilt) (KAISER100) w/ WM6.0 Professional. Here's where I stand on attempt #2
1. Cleared the storage on the phone.
2. In order to get the correct usb drivers on my Windows 7 PC, I downloaded and installed WMDC 6.1 UPDATE: WMDC 6.1 Does not install ALL the correct drivers, you'll need to force some by reading this thread.
3. A few toggles of "Advanced Network Functionality" later, the phone was Syncing nicely.
4. I then downloaded and flashed the Official HTC AT&T Tilt WM6.1 Upgrade ROM Success.
I now have stock WM6.1 and radio version 1.65.21.18
Next up, I'm trying to decide which HardSPL to use, and which radio will provide me with the best options from the Android Chefs. I don't anticipate any trouble flashing these. But, which combination of HardSPL and radio offer the best base package for an upgrade to Android? I'd love your advice.
Speaking that, after I upgrade the SPL and radio, how the hell do I get Android on my phone if I'm not suppossed to use Atools? Don't I need Atools in order to create a custom .nbh and Android install package for my Kaiser? If not, where can I find these files, especially if I don't know my panel type?
UPDATE: A Little bit closer.
I successfully updated the SPL / Radio(1.70.Olinex) / SIM Unlocked using KaiserUnlocker.exe
Updated the bootloader to 3.56 Hard SPL nostuckinSPL / Force USB via SD card
Updated the radio from 170.0linex to 1.70.19.09 via SD CARD
For any Windows 7 x64 users attempting to Flash their Kaiser, be sure to have a look at [TUT] Dummies guide: updating HTC USB Sync Drivers.
I should have made a bigger mental note when after I installed WMDC 6.1, Windows FAILED to install the correct driver the first time I connected my phone to the PC in bootloader mode. The above thread explains the process of booting Windows 7 in a special mode, in order to force customized drivers to be installed on your machine, the hard way. I followed the steps until about step 12 (my device manager never yellow flagged anything). According to the thread, it looked like it failed, so I resorted to the next best thing. Keep the phone in bootloader and unplug and replug to different usb ports praying that my "forced-on" drivers would finally recognize the damn thing. Success, it finally did and Windows started loading the Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM Windows driver. Launching KaiserUnlocker.exe took it from there, albiet with one confusing caveat... IN the first part of step 1, KaiserUnlocker will tell you that you need to unplug and replug your usb during the second-half of step one. Okay, no problem. It fails to tell you that you're going to do this "uplug and replug" at the same time you'll be staring at text in red saying DO NOT UNPLUG OR LAUNCH ANY PROGRAMS!
However, unplugging and replugging is necessary in order to trigger Windows to use the bootloader drivers to communicate.

Windows Phone 7.8 RTM Update Cab(?)

Okay. So i thought itd be cool to be able to update to WIndows 7.8 RTM that was posted here on XDA without making a custom rom or wiping files (basically a clean easy update anyone who could push a cab to their phone can do.)
Anyways, i downloaded the RTM build and a Tango update cab to compare files with and see how to name the files and what id need.
Turns out, it was pretty straightforward at first. All the files within the cab had identical files (as far as filenames and types, except they were the 7.8 RTM versions.) within the system files folder of the rar of the RTM. so i packaged all the proper folders as cabs with the appropriate filenames (folder.version.coming.from-version.going.to.cab) and used a batch renamer to add the .pku extension to the end of the files as so to match the style of the tango cab (the tango update cab contains cabs with the .pku added on the end. once i removed .pku, making it a .cab file they open perfectly.) then i packaged all the .cab.pku files as a cab. So far so good. It looked like a WP7 update cab. THEN...
When i tried pushing the cab to my device, i learned it has to be signed...
I tried signing it with a copy of the certificate i pulled from the tango cab. No luck. need the private key.
Then i tried a certificate existing on my pc, created by zune, that i had a private key for. No go.
Created a key and certificate in MakeCer. No go.
Upon using a cab signing tool i found online for signing Windows Mobile Cabs with some generic sdk certificate, i got the error 8007000b.
Overall, my cab wont sign, idk if this works, im not very good at this stuff, and idk what im doing wrong. Can anyone help?
Perhaps sign the cab file?
Or is this all futile, and would my idea not work anyways (i figured it wouldnt hurt to try. With an update i figured worse case scenario i boot into restore mode and restore from a backup.)
Or does it have to be signedby microsoft, still making it futile?
My Update Cab (Skydrive, Public Link): http://sdrv.ms/12cw9pf
NOTE: Yes, i know the tango update was only 20 -30mb, while mine is over 180. The RTM contained more system files than the tango update, most likely due to it containing new features and OS modifications. Also, should i of excluded the EXEs from some of the folders from the cabs?

nice try , never going to work
first :
the Tango cab is a .pku , that is a DIFF Image update it is the DIFF between what is on phone and what got updated ( thats way it is so small)
second:
the 8858 DUMP is canoncial , so ist the whole flie ( thats way it is 180 mb)
third:
cab.pkr/pkg/pku Needs tobe signed with the sert on the phone ( so for stock roms this means MS Needs to sign them )
the supercab also Needs tobe signed by OEM or MS
so you did all the work for nothing

-w-' i feared as much... *sighs* i guess even if i ever did get the proper files in the cabs id still need the private key for the certificate... oh well... guess ill just have to wait for MS to release 7.8...
Nothing wrong with trying.

is this try the first of its kind??i mean is this the first time that u r trying to create updates like this??
if yes i am damn sure u have learned a lot while doing this..
You can get the right files into the cab and sign it with ultrashot certificate perhaps? Ppl with custom roms can use it and your work wouldn't be a complete waste. This is assuming this cab update won't have any effect on the unlock itself

Hehe... im not so good with that stuff. The reason i tried at all is because i noticed the RTM 7.8 contained the same files as the update cab for 7.5. Problem is, i apparently require the knowledge of which files are updated (because the way i apparently had made it it would of replaced dang near every system file) as well as i have no clue on how to sign it. i noted that i couldnt sign the cab with my own signing certificate, so im at a complete loss... my apologies. (if anyone wants to take my cab and see if they can do something with it be my guest, but im not very experienced with this.)

Yes this is my first time, and i have learned some things.
A: Just because its in the RTM doesnt mean it should be in the Update cab
B: If you want to use updates on stock roms, you must have the cab signed by microsoft, so No Update For You
C: Its a pain in the rear to sign a cab with a certificate you own (at least it was for me. Still unsuccessful)
D: Windows Phone has .EXE's
E: Windows Phone has a lot of files
F: LG Has a locked bootloader (what pushed me to try this was when i learned LG's (like my quantum) cant have custom roms)

u can have all the goodness of custom roms with interop unlock itself..interop unlock using mfg app, install wp7roottools and mark apps that require root access as trusted in wp7roottools policy editor and u r good to go..

Nope. You see, the whole point would be (if I was to try would be) to make a 7.8 rom. Idgaf about the "goodness" of custom roms, and only reason I use wp7root tools is for MarketplaceSwitcher (the fixed version). I cant get 7.8 using interop unlock. I need a custom rom to get it. Problem is, LG windows phones have a locked bootloader. Translation: No custom roms. Meaning the purpose of creating a custom rom would be pointless.
That's why I attempted to make an update CAB. Those could be pushed via the cab updater method, which works with any wp7 handset, and wouldn't erase my data as well. Problem? Official roms cant be updated via cabs with anything other than Microsoft signed cabs. So my attempts were futile.
Thank goodness, though, that 7.8 should be coming to some handsets on the 30th. Im hoping some people catch those cabs and post them (because I CAN use the cab updater method, given that the packages are Microsoft signed, as stated above.):fingers-crossed:
Not sure I know what you mean by goodness of custom roms, wp7 is about as lean as you can get, its not like the good old wm days where different builds were available on different devices an full of stuff, or android where its full of crap, if its just to restore with some apps preinstalled then make a Zune backup and restore from that when You need to

What the person meant and that I was referring to by "goodness of custom roms" is that some WP7 roms have all the Nokia goodies baked in and can run software that regular WP7 cant due to software restrictions. Such as some include the Nokia drivers and files to run City Lens and use Camera Extras. The nokia extras, even though they can be installed on any windows phone (granted you have root tools and marketplace switcher to access the "Nokia Collection"), some require special drivers and files in order to work (including Bluetooth file transfer, which uses extra APIs and drivers not included out of the box by Microsoft for the upcoming 7.8).
All of which may achievable in the near future, bar pre installed apps of course, but the running of custom drivers may be possible, and as I said, install what you want, back it up and boom, your own rom ready should you need to format

and like I said, all I want is the new home screen, rebranded tiles, and extra themes. Cant do that using apps.
Though the Nokia's should be getting the 7.8 update through zune tomorrow, so if someone could obtain the cab, ill be good. I don't want a rom anymore anyways. (I only would of wanted one in December. but now learning 7.8 is coming out tomorrow (albeit to specific devices) means I don't want to anymore, because I bet a dollar to a donut by the end of the week someone will of posted the update cabs, to which I will be good.)
Also, I tried adding drivers to my phone. Didn't work (followed steps to add correct drivers to my phone via WP7Root Tools and the drivers packaged in a xap that extracted them). But I don't really care, since I have an early beta of City Lens that supports my phone, so im good.
Overall, only reason I would rom is if I was desperate.
I cant actually use a true custom rom because of my device.
I understand your method, but its a back up, not really a "rom", since all my data is backed up with it, and I don't care about preinstalled apps anyways, since the apps I use are always changing. I don't prefer restoring my device unless 100% necessary (AKA: I screwed something up) so I don't do this.

It sounds like the only reason youd want a ROM then is to have got the 7.8 update? that's a fair enough reason but as you know its coming out soon anyway so its not really important.
With regards to your Drivers, yeah it cant be done with WP7 Root tools at the moment, I believe im right in saying (and is public knowledge I hope!) that's being worked on as we speak
actually whilst I have your attention, see your City lens app, do you have issues with compass calibration? is the beta any less sensitive perhaps? Ive been trying and ill be damned if I can get it right

The city lens I have TECHNICALLY was a Chinese version (apparently in china an early beta was released to ALL wp7 devices) and the app was translated and posted somewhere around here on XDA, and can be sideloaded if you've dev unlocked (I dev unlocked using mfg). It DOES require calibration most of the time when you first open it, and since the quantum had a funny way of handling the compass driver (even LG's own apps work funny with compass) it works weird, but other then that its fine. Depending on the phone you have it should work well enough. I will not post the xap here only due to the fact that its already somewhere else on xda and don't want to post it without accrediting the work the user did to translate. (I for the life of me cant find where it was originally posted on here).
