HELP! (noob) - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi,
So i just got my MDA compact III (HTC Artemis) and I have noticed that people upgrade them to windows mobile 6.
Unfortunatley this is my first WM phone so I don't understand all these technical terms (ROM, Cooking, CID etc)
can anyone help me? is it worth upgrading? how do i back all my info up? what happens if it goes wrong?
thanks in advance.

COngrats on your new phone.
It is always worth it to upgrade to WM6.
There are 2 kinds of locks: CID and SIM.
SIM locks prevent you from using say a TMO phone on ATT.
CID unlocks prevent you from flashing a new ROM (like a wm6 distribution)
You can use some backup utility to well, back up. Search the forum for one.
If something goes wrong, you can just reflash the RUU, which stands for ROM Upgrade Utility. It has the "default" rom that you get from your new phone.

Thanks. This helped a lot.
Where do I get the WM6 distributions from? how do I install?
does the RUU come with the phone or do I download it from somewhere?

With all due respect to fzzyrn IT IS NOT ALWAYS WORTH UPGRADING!
Since this is your first WM phone and you just got it you should take a few weeks and get to know it.
There rule to follow here is: if it is not broken do not fix it!
WM 6 has only a few small new features (major one being HTML email support) which you may find you do not need.
First thing you need to do is to read the WiKi. You will find detailed explanation about terms like ROM, CID and SIM unlocking there.
Then if you are still determined to upgrade you should be aware of the following risks:
1) If you bought your phone through a cell company changing ROM even to an official version from HTC will void your warranty!
2) You must take care and read the instructions that come with the update you are using. Preforming update incorrectly, having battery run out or phone disconnected from your computer will result in a "bricked" (unusable) device!
3) Some WM 6 ROMs, change your device hardware ID. If you have purchased any programs that lock on to that ID during registration they will stop working.
Now for your phone there are two options:
1) Official update on HTC site (if I am not mistaking should be out already, but I am not sure)
2) "Cooked" or unofficial ROMs. Look for instructions in Artemis forum.
Keep in mind that ROMs are device specific. There is no such thing as generic / universal ROM.
Also keep in mind that various ROM versions including official WM 6 have different bugs. There is no answer to which is best or a guarantee that you like any of them better than your original WM 5 ROM.

What happens after rom update?

OK, I'm thinking about putting in the new rom so that I can utilize the A2DP.
Before doing that, I was wondering if some of you can answer a few questions for me:
1). I know that after loading the new rom, it's like a hard reset where you loose all your data. Can I use backup software like SPB Backup to bring the programs and info that I have back to the Universal with the new rom?
2). Which would be considered the best rom update right now?
I have the Qtek 9000 with Boot 1.0, with it's original rom (1.13.64WWE with 1.03 Radio). I'm thinking of going with the Qtek 13077 176 rom for the A2DP features.
3). Is there anything else that I need to look into besides backing up data and software that I need to be worried about on the Universal?
This will be a first for me. I'm a rom-upgrade virgin. So please be gentle with me.
Thanks.
Love to know all that too.. that said I am running headlong into updating my T-mobile with the UNI_DT_WWE_13077_176_10900_Ship.zip version.
Already updated the bootloader to 1.1
So far things are good..
Charles
Opps.. that wasnt teh right country.. DE
Trying UNI_QTEK_13077_176_10900_WWE.exe
Country error on that one too.. So going with. SInce my MDA Pro was a UK phone.
UNI_ORUK_13090_174_10300_WWE_Ship.exe
The country error thing is actually checking for more than country, or really not country at all, it checks for provider. My TmobNL flashed the TmobUK without problems, but not any of the other providers' roms. You need to get the three appropriate nbf files from the rom update package (either by unpacking with winrar/winzip or by copying them out of the temp directory from under its nose, while it's telling you it won't work), put them into a directory with MaUpgradeUt_NoID.exe (from ftp://xda:[email protected]/BlueAngel/Tools/MaUpgradeUt_noID.zip ), and run that file. The picture won't be a universal, but one of the other HTC phones, but it should still work.
Disclaimer: It seems to work for me, but if you screw up your device, I ain't taking responsibility for it.
Yea.. thanks I figured that out after hitting the right search. I installed the QTEK version and all seems well.. Other than the fact I cant get Tmobile US to unlock the damn thing. Trying to go through T-mobile UK.. but have my doubts.
If I had known of the Unlocking probems I may not have gotten it yet and waited.. But its so damn cool, I am glad I do have it. Just got to figure out how to unlock it.

The new ROMs are the same, basically. I love the Qtek one since it's simple with less cabs in the ext_rom.

You might end up with your universal totally dead. Do it on your own risk.

Sprite backup's latest version (5.1 just released) allows you to restore AFTER a ROM upgrade. Visit their web site for the information. I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow

Sounds cool! Looking forward to hearing your finding with the new version.

Thanks for all the responses.
Here's my input:
1). Went ahead and installed the new ROM.
2). Worked great except for a few kinks (not sure if it's the ROM or me)
3). No...SPB Backup will not restore apps into new rom. Had to do everything from scratch. Don't have Sprite Backup. Do tell if you have.
4). Bought the Motorola HT820 and A2DP worked great (except for some scratchy noises when PDA is on belt and I'm standing upright - not unbearable).
5). Luckily I had everything backed up and finally got myself a instruction sheet on how to reinstall all my apps again.
6). Install of ROM went without a hitch...though I held my breath for close to half hour - praying - please don't brick! Be warned....it might.
7). Only thing needed to test is the idea of having 2 Bluetooth Headset devices connect to the Universal on the new ROM and see if they work. Why? One for caller ID and another one for stereo headset. No need to open clamshell to view who's calling (as soon as Jetset get their software to show names and voice dialing working properly).
FYI, the device I had was a QTEK and my install went smoothly. I cannot and will not be responsible for anybody "bricking" their Universal just because mine went smoothly.
Thanks again for everybody who chimed in.
Mel
modem man---where did you get the upgrade ??
where did you get the down load ? what ver#'s is it i have the qtek also
My Qtek is:
Qtek9000
Bootloader: 1.00
Upgraded from 1.13.64WWE with 1.03 Radio ROM to UNI_QTEK_13077_176_10900_WWE ROM.
New ROM has A2DP and AKU2.
For the ROM, follow the following instructions:
1). From the XDA-Developers Forum page, top left corner, select wiki.xda-develoeprs.com
2). Look for HTC Pocket Phones Title and select Universal
3). Scroll down until you see "Detailed Instruction On How To Upgrade with Bootloader method" and select it
4). There you'll see a link to the rom download link (in #1 instruction).
WARNING!
- Your Qtek 9000 may or may not work after the ROM install. You are doing this on your own risk.
- Your data will not be available anymore after the new ROM install (if it works). There are forum discussions that state that Sprite Backup will allow a backup restore even after a ROM update but I haven't tested it yet and will not vouch that it will.
- If you have a heart condition and you have to worry about money, I would advise you to reconsider updating your ROM. Your heart might not be able to handle the stress.
Please read the following forum sites to understand a little more about it:
A warning that needs to be read:

A computer crash situation:

WARNING - I cannot stress enough on the fact that your Universal might be a brick if the install did not go well.
OK.
On the positive side....with A2DP, I love the fact that I can listen to streaming radio via Bluetooth Stereo Headsets.
And the Universal does run a little faster (IMO).

upgrading the ROM - a noob guide

Hi all
please dont flame the n00b. I have recently acquired my first smartphone the diamond and am very pleased with it. I have read through the threads and have developed my understanding of the considerations to make in flashing the ROM on my phone
I have an early version of the ROM as I received one of the first stock into the UK, which turned out to be grey imports from hong kong :S . I would like to realise some of the speed / battery / bugfix benefits of the newest ROM
however many of these threads are quite long , so i was wondering if someone could do me a favour by succintcly summarising the steps i would need :
my phone is runnning :
1.34.831.1 WWE - the unit is from hong kong i beleive, i have registered on HTC HK e-club
I would like to upgrage this is the latest signed UK ROM ?
If this is not possible can advice be given on going to the latest HK WWE ?
I understand this will involve changing the HARD SPL ?
Additionally can any method provided be confirmed as a reversible process should i need to invoke the warranty ?
thanks in advance for your help.
please let me know if you need any further information form me in order to help.
thanks
1: install hardspl (unsigned)
2: search the threads for the newer HK stock roms, they've been posted by tudispin I think.
3: flash
4: should need arise, you can revert to stock spl, search the threads for spls by htchackers.
you should be able to flash back for warranty purposes.. safest thing is still to dump your current ROM (search the forums and wiki for how-to), but i think you'll be alright. You can check out my site for step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade your ROM
thanks so far
just for help so far
your guide looks great racerx_
so i should be able to do the following tonight
1: install hardspl (unsigned)
2: search the threads for the newer UK? stock roms,
3: flash
4: and should the need arise, you can revert to stock spl, search the threads for spls by htchackers.
once the hardspl is loaded am i correct in thinking any ROM can be loaded ?
oh but
dump my current ROM before proceeding .. just in case

yeah you should technically be able to load any ROM... if signed Hard-SPL, then only any signed ROM of course
hit a slight problem
So i am tryiong to HARD SPL. have gone through all the instructions but :
when installint the HARD SPL . the phone screen switches off the progress bar on PC sits at )% for about 20 sec it then accelerates to 100% very quickly within around 2 mins. It say that is is installed correctly
however the phone restarts and i can still see the d: as 1.34.00.00
so the loinex 1.3 has not installed
the windows is hard reset as i then have to go through the screen calibration
any help appreciated
HardSPL is not the ROM, just software to enable the update
once you installed HardSPL you should now be able to install a ROM
hi
yes sorry for the confusion in my past previous description. It is the HARD SPL software update which says that it is installed but isnt
i have not attempted to load another ROM until this is done first
any further advice ?
in essence when installing the olinex 1.30 i get no errors
bit it doesnt install and all i get is a hard reset ?
If it goes through OK, it has installed You don't see anything different in the splash screen- that just lists the basics
To confirm, go into Bootloader mode by holding down the Volume Down Key and at the same time pressing the red reset button at the mouth of the stylus silo. It can take a few goes, but will show a rainbow screen listing the SPL etc, which ought to say 1.30 Olinex, confirming the correct SPL flash.
Once confirmed press the reset button to restart.
ok thanks for step by step advice there
the HARD SPL is loaded version 1.30 I will try a new ROM now
i am trying the :
RUU_Diamond_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.37.707.1_Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.26a.25.09_1.00.25.03_Ship
which is signed so should work
mmm even though the phone is synced up I get error
"262" when i try to install new ROM
it basically stalls on 0% for about 4 to 5 mins before it aborts with this error message.
i have searched the forums but cannot see a succinct plausible answer
hmm.. i thought that error was usually encountered with unsigned ROMs...
1) are you flashing with xp or vista
2) are you connected through a USB hub?
3) what EXACTLY are your steps for flashing this ROM
hi there
yeas flashing through vista 64 bit
and not using USB hub but direct connection
I downloaded the signed 1.37.401.3 Europe ROM linked from this forum and this installed fine
the improvement over the old ROM is immense. so far i am delighted by the results.
I am still perplexed as to why the asian ROM did not install still :S
only difference so far is that this EUROP ROM does not have the remote desktop app
thanks for all your help. I am going to test this ROM over the coming week, but unless there is a compelling reason to another ROM i will stick with this
Why HARDSPL when flashing HTC rom?
When using the newer 1.37 roms, you download the installer from e-club, make activesync conn en go for it?
A noob's point of view
I got my Diamond about two weeks ago, and since I'm new to PDAs and WM, I've done a lot of reading on the forums, wiki etc. At first things were quite murky for me and I know what my fellow noob here is feeling. So I thought I should share my experience (or lack there of) for the use of other noobs.
What I Know
HardSPL is needed in order to flash a cooked (non original HTC) ROM. As I understand, it is the equivalent of BIOS for PCs, mixed with a bootloader flavor. You need to first change this section of software first in order for the cooked roms to be accepted.
HardSPL comes in two flavours:
- the developer edition with which you can flash any type of roms (signed, unsigned, original) link: HardSPL dev ed
- the signed edition with which you can flash signed roms (original HTC, and cooked signed). The signed ROM versions give an added sense of reliability since they are tested. link: HardSPL signed the topic name was confusing for me at first
A list of signed ROMs: here
There are more than one "cooks" out there working in teams or otherwise. And more than one ROM you can flash. I did a lot of reading before I chose the one to use, I find user feedback the best measuring tool for quality .
Now for the flashing part
After you downloaded the HardSPL and the chosen ROM, you need to install ActiveSync. This is found on the CDs that come with the device, or downloadable fromo the M$ ****e aaaa site ActiveSync is a tool used for transferring contacts, e-mails and other outlook stuff if you use it, files, AND is needed for the flashing process. When installing, if you do not use outlook and do not like "syncronisation folders" on your desktop uncheck every "folder" option, you will be better off.
This site was very useful to me since it gave a detailed description flashing with visual documentation which (a bit uncomfortable to admit) was very helpful for me.
The HardSPL flash takes little time to complete and unless going into bootloader mode (vol down + soft reset) is completely transparent to the user.
The ROM flash takes longer 10 mins - they go by pretty slowly .
For safety reasons, I also downloaded an original HTC ROM just in case.
Because the flashing process once started SHOULD NOT be stopped there are a few things to consider:
- charge the battery
- firmly and directly (no hubs) plug the USB cable into computer and device.
- if you live in an area where power cuts are often consider doing the flashing on an UPS-enabled computer.
When the flashing finishes, the device will reboot and you will have to set-up again. If using TLRs ROM do not panic if you have to align the screen 6 times or so as I did. You will eventually get to the next step
What I don't know or am not sure of:
- when using signed HardSPL can I load an original HTC signed ROM? if so, is this enough in case of RMA issues?
- when reflashing with a newer/different ROM can I restore a back-up made with the previous ROM? I'm using sprite and I backed up everything, including what registry stuff it offered to. In this case, do i need to reapply the registry tweaks? dunno if sprite backs-up all the registry or just some of it.
Im must thank guys for this thread, i am minutes from going to the postal office to get my Diamond and this weekend has been full of information reading and program downloading, but the only thing i was a bit hung up on was this flashig buisness. Of course i know a lot about flashing ( Right about everything there is to flash ) but almost nothing about Phone Flashing
But i think i will try the version i get now first to see if i feel the need to update to anything else...
Hence my question is rather simple... How tha fack do i see what version i already have? >_< is it that (vol down + soft reset) thing? or am i way out of place?
thx.

No, that is for HardSPL info. To see the ROM version, go to settings - device info and you'll see both ROM and radio.

HELP NEEDED PLEASE! Rom+instructions for my o2 trion wm6

Hi amm

I have tryed to put windows mobile 6 on the phone as it only have wm5 on it, but i get as far as the phone changing to upgrade mode ( 3 striped red, blue and green) screen and then it says that the phone cant comunicate.
I have tryed going though o2 website but it not recignizing my serial for the phone ( ex contract and also was a replacement handset)
any help would be nice, by the way i am on windows vist a, but i have also tryed it on xp, but the same still happns.
Thanks
Paul
anyone? noow any suggestions
This answer may seem condescending, but it isn't.
1. Are you attemtping to flash a rom update from the phone's original carrier or a non carrier specific rom? If a non carrier specific rom then see #2. If carrier specific did you download the rom from a secure place such as the carrier's website? If not, you may want to and try again.
2. Have you made sure your phone is CID and sim unlocked? This has to happen if you are attempting to flash a non carrier specific rom onto your phone. There is literature in your specific phone's Mobile 6 forum that is stickied or in the Wiki which will show you the best way to accomplish flashing. You must first read, then use the correct methods and tools or you will most likely create a brick. At this point of the game your phone is a little older and the path to Mobile 6 is well laid out. Which leads to the next question.
3. Have you done a search for this problem? You are not the first and will not be the last to have run into this issue. Using the search button does wonders here. If you have the cajones to flash your phone you are adventerous and the knowledge you will pick up will help in the long run. I say this because flashing is addictive and once you see the immediate improvements you will continue to look for better roms.
4. Please remember this is a developer's forum so the intelligence level is higher than most other forums but the patience level is much lower for those not willing to follow directions and/or help themselves. Some things have well laid out paths and others are trial and error. A lot of people here are doing a large amount of work for little to no money so please READ before embarking on your journey.
5. Get to work. Oh yeah. Please lit your phone's information in your signature. It will save someone asking the first 2 or 3 questions I did everytime. You could use mine as an example. Believe me it saves time and people are more willing to help.
hey thanks for your message
I am trying to flash the phone with Official O2 UK WM6 Trion (Hermes) rom 3.54.206.1_6275+radio 1.47 (3-8-2007) , the phone is simfree.
but even on trying to install Olipro v7 2.10 i get messages like 266 or 260 conection timed out or something. i am technical minded and i have tryed to serch for the awsers using google.
I suggest reading the Wiki and your Mobile 6 forums for the way to flash without using the usb cord. It will take a non-sdhc memory card and uses the nbh file from the rom you are flashing. Research that.
What is the HTC name for your phone? The Trion is a Hermes or a Wizard correct?
Also, CID and sim unlocking your phone will eliminate many future problems. Just be aware it automatically voids your warranty.
Okay - can you do a soft reset and have the phone work fine? That is step one. If so, then go to the Hermes Mobile 6 forum and check out the stickies. Dr. Puttingham wrote a great guide to flashing our phones.
If you can't get the phone working from the soft reset I suggest reading the Wiki and the Mobile 6 forums for the way to flash without using the usb cord. It will take a non-sdhc memory card and uses the nbh file from the rom you are flashing. Research that.
The Trion is a Hermes, which is what I have (Cingular 8525). I would suggest a non carrier rom of Mobile 6.1. You will find it to be much faster and stable.
Also, CID and sim unlocking your phone will eliminate many future problems. Just be aware it automatically voids your warranty.
hi i just found out that thephone is not a trion afterall it is a xda mini s, can this still be upgraded
I believe the Mini S is a Wizard. check out the forums. All the answers are there. I retired my Wizard 3 months ago . This is an easy problem to fix. Just read. I still suggest Mobile 6.1. Especially on the Wizard.

Diamond Upgrade Guide For Noobs

Posting this for others due to the lack of response received when upgrading, and the glut of sometimes confusing information required to wade through. Not everyone wants to spend hours messing around with flashing. It would help us all if people were more open in sharing knowledge. Many ask what may seem to be obvious questions, not because they are lazy or stupid, but they want to get an EXPLICIT answer and be absolutely clear before damaging what is an expensive purchase.
PRE UPGRADE:
Device: HTC S21HT Diamond
Carrier: EMobile
Country: Japan
ROM: 1.73.881.8
Radio: 104.25.04
3G: W-CDMA
POST UPGRADE:
ROM: Dutty's WWE v3.4
Radio: 1.00.25.05
HardSPL: UNSIGNED Olinex 1.40 (MUST BE UNSIGNED!!!)
3G: W-CDMA
PREPARATION
Okay after wading thru tons of pages to check and double check, essentially I followed the ModMyDiamond.info upgrade guide. This is probably the clearest and has screenshots.
Ensure you read the guide thoroughly before launching your upgrade. Download all the required tools, and I checked all tools for recent versions. Also check the correct upgrade procedures for your particular 3G technology, i.e., CDMA, W-CDMA etc.
Write down any connection, email, internet access and MMS settings. Most of them are on the web anyway, and the XDA Developers Network thread.
1. BACK UP DATA
Follow guide using back up software
2. DUMP YOUR CURRENT VENDOR ROM (OPTIONAL)
You can dump your current vendor ROM if you wish to flash back to it for warranty purposes. Or simply download one of the stock ROMs others have already uploaded.
3. UPGRADE TO HARD SPL (IMPORTANT)
This is to allow you to flash other ROMs other than the current vendors on your phone, and prevent your device from getting bricked. Unsigned Hard-SPL allows you to flash unsigned ROMs. Read the discussion on this for more details. Check the ROM thread of your choice to see which SPL you should use.
4. UPGRADE RADIO (OPTIONAL)
Upgrade your radio for more stability or various reasons. Read the discussions for any info on issues with your current vendor radio or other radios. Radio: 1.00.25.05 seems to be pretty stable. *DO NOT* flash radio without hard-spl first.
5. UPGRADE ROM
Upgrade ROM of your choice. You may choose another standard ROM, say English WWE purely because you are on a non-English ROM like me, or choose one of the cooked ROMs such as DuttyThroy's for stability, performance and additional applications. The choice is yours. Read the ROM threads before choosing and downloading.
DuttyThroy recommends a hard reset after each ROM flash. I didn't and all seems fine, but you may wish to follow his advice.
6. RESTORE YOUR BACKED UP DATA (If necessary)
*ISSUES
Some report the dreaded black screen or hanging during flashing. Black screen is NORMAL. Ensure your ActiveSync connection is green and status is synchronised. Switch off all power management, Anti-virus, screensavers etc, or anything that will interrupt the process. Always check for the confirmation prompt on your device. This threw me the first time and could not complete the process. Had to remove the battery to exit black screen. Subsequent attempts were fine. You may lose your ActiveSync connection and the flash application's progress bar may take some time to reach 100% but BE PATIENT! DO NOT DISCONNECT UNTIL THE DEVICE SOFT RESETS AND THE FLASH UTILITY INSTRUCTS YOU TO.
Connection Settings
My example is EMobile. Musato explains internet, band selection, settings here. Like Musato I chose not to receive EMobile mail, so this means we have to be on the EMB network and not EMNet. BTW, access point in this example is emb.ne.jp. This is not for the domain field. Just apply your own network details. Again, check the XDA Forum Network thread.
Enjoy your new toy!

Hard SPL question
Hi,
thanks for taking the initiative to create this thread. I have flashed my HTC Diamond once before, so did Hard SPL at the time with the UnsignedOlinex. The modmydiamond site doesn't specifically explain whether I have to Hard SPL again for a second flashing. I tried the soft reset thing to find out whether Hard-SPL is still on my Diamond but I only get a screen with R,G,D numbers at startup.
I also need to know whether the ship.exe rom I got has a radio included or I suppose the radio upgrade is always separate from the ROM upgrade file?
hey, there's a noob question here.
does upgrading my firmware, rom and radio actualy unlocks the phone?
i saw someone asking before when searching the forum, but the answer wasn't specific enough. thanks.
hey Duttyshank, did you ever get the mms settings for the emobile going?
I ask because my mate just got one, and it was simple to set up, a part from mms...
Cheers bro.
hi
actually no as I chose not to use the service. However I think Musato and some others got it working. The thread is above on this page. search for musato.
Cheers

Telstra branded diamond changing to different rom

I have a Touch Diamond branded by telstra after reading looking through the forum for a while I can't find an answer to a perplexing question ....
Has anyone tried to change the rom on a telstra branded TD to the vodafone rom?
Or has anyone changed to a custom rom with a telstra branded and to what success?
Thanks everyone in advance for help.
While I haven't tried the Vodaphone Rom I have tried a number of other ROM's Dutty's, Swifts, Panosha's Simple, and now Hikari ( i don't like the Tf3d). All have worked well on the Telstra Network. I can't see why it won't work on the Vodaphone network. My nephew's work fine on the Optus network.
To be really honest the only extra functionality you will gain from the Vodafone ROM is the Vodafone specific software and the theme.
If it's just the theme you are after I suggest browsing this forum for one.
Alternatively if you're after the Vodafone ROM for Vodafone SIM... I'd skip that and jump straight onto one of the custom ROMs. The phone performance is a HEAP better than any of the telecommunication company's stock ROMs.
Food for thought.
Im on NextG with Telstra and i have tried nearly every rom here except vodafone.. but the only one flaw with using a unbranded telstra rom is being able to access bigpond.. like with foxtel and all that.. just doesnt pick it up as being a 3.5G phone.
i dunno why.. but i have just put it back to telstra rom and modded it completely myself. if i knew how to take like an image of it i would and post it up here but i wouldnt know one thing about cooking roms lol
I have a Telstra branded Diamond and am using it with an Optus SIM.
When I first got the phone I couldn't get it to accept the Optus settings for Internet access.
So... I upgraded it to one of the cooked ROMS. (Dia Duit and Duttys were tried)
Since then I haven't gone back to the standard ROM and enjoy the better performance.

Did you run Connection Setups? I got my Voda and Optus to work. Try again.

Im on NextG with Telstra and i have tried nearly every rom here except vodafone.. but the only one flaw with using a unbranded telstra rom is being able to access bigpond.. like with foxtel and all that.. just doesnt pick it up as being a 3.5G phone.

If you're talking about the Bigpong 'free to browse' page being different the all you need is to change the 'custom user agent' setting in Opera... see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2688822&postcount=260
But anyway... to answer the OP, I've flashed a stack of ROMs from here and am currently happy with CT's latest (HD version). Just remember to keep the original specs (Radio & ROM version no.s) in case you need to revert for warranty.
thanks for all the help
thanks for all your comments
I bought the touch diamond second hand, and didn't realise till after I'd parted with the money it was branded (HUGE newbie mistake) but I haven't bought a new phone for 6 years since I got the Nokia 6620.
I use a vodafone sim, and have it working pretty well, just the last lot of telstra locked stuff annoys me. Thanks to this fantastic forum I have been able to change and unlock most of it. Biggest thing is some things just won't work on it, because the current Telstra rom is 1.38.841.5 (vodafone rom is 1.96.XXX.X) and experience a fair share of the modding apps & cabs have problems or simply don't work.
I was thinking of the vodafone one simply because I'm with them. Also when I was first trying to unlock it talked to HTC and they said I couldn't use the vodafone rom on my telstra branded because the hardware in the telstra one is different to the vodafone one.
Thanks for the help, can anyone suggest the best custom rom, & what else do i need to change roms? I've got a bit of a IT background, just not with phones.
Really love this little phone, and I see potential for tf3d, but long way of modding to get it as I want it.
Thanks again everyone.
I have a similar question, thought I'd save wasting a new thread and post it here.
I've had a Telstra branded Diamond for a few months now, using it with a 3 Mobile SIM, and have had no worries until a couple of days ago, when I started roaming, and haven't been able to reconnect to the three mobile network since..
Any ideas??
The only question regarding Telstra branded Diamonds is returning to original SPL 1.38 for warranty reasons..
just one more thought
another question or two...
If I upgrade to another custom rom will I still have to unlock it after the hard reset?
I've been looking and think I've found the rom I want, but can't find a definitive link for hard spl. I've read the thread that everywhere directs me to and the links that I think are for the unsigned hardspl has the headind stock spls, or am I just misreading this.
Also does anyone know if CT 6.4 is signed or unsigned?
Guys - I understand the confusion surrounding upgrading and flashing ROMs as it was only recently I was in the same position.
So in an attempt to make it a little easier for those reading here I will pass on what has worked well for me...
1. Flash HardSPL as downloaded from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=93362&d=1213719705 (it's unsigned but don't worry about that... it saves headaches if you want my opinion)
2. Download the ROM of your choice (as stated earlier - my preference is currently CT's v6.4HD... fast, stable and HD, what more do you want?)
3. Once you have the ROM, extract the .nbh file and rename it to DIAMIMG.nbh and copy this to the root of your internal storage on your Diamond
4. If you're ready to flash (meaning you've backed up whatever you wanna save) then hold the vol down and back button and press the reset button together until you see the tri-colour screen... you're then in the bootloader
5. The phone will search for the .nbh file you placed in memory and ask you to press the power button to confirm you want to flash... obviously you want to do this so sit back while it flashes
6. Once done, reset the phone and perform a hard reset (this is recommended by most ppl although I haven't always done it and never had any issues)
Now enjoy setting your phone up with a custom ROM...
If you want more detail then I strongly suggest you search around and read... it takes time and effort but it's definitely worth it if you want to flash with confidence...
Cheers
not as easy
Sorry if anyone read this orginal post just getting jitters when something went wrong with hardspl flash.
But a soft reset later and its still works. But it raises the question if something bad happens when flashing the hardspl and bootloader doesn't work what can be done apart from throwing phone away?
I assume as long as the bootloader works you can manually redo incomplete rom install?
Something going wrong with hard spl install is my biggest worry, it was a nats ear from happening a little earlier so I'm asking these questions.
Oh & last thing with CT's 6.4 rom what is the real difference between original TF3d and HD? How is the increased screen resolution handled? Do you have to scroll down for the area I cant see, or is it cut off so you can not access it, or is it squished to fit the smaller resolution?

As long as you can access the bootloader you should be able to sort out the phone... personally I've never had an issue with flashing (and on average I've flashed my two Diamonds (a 130 and 100) an easy 30-40 times).
My preference with flashing is to do it from the internal storage (seems the most logical in terms of reliability - and is also by far the fastest) but I'm not sure if HardSPL can be done that way - if it is possible I'd be strongly recommending it - USB connections are just too dicey for something that serious.

I have the OliNex 1.4 hard spl and I can flash CT's ROM without any problem.
done
Well it done.
A little easier than I was expecting but just as concerning, but over now.
Finally went with CT's 6.4 Original, I can always change to the HD or just add one of the HD add ons.
Everything is running smooth and well. Finally all the testra crap is gone.
Thanks to everyone for their help and kind advice.
This is a GREAT forum, its been a fantastic help and resource.
Till next time
How do you flash the new 2.03 ROM? I have tried with the executable from HTC and it gives me an invalid ID error.
