Bricked Universal? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

My bootloader was 0.x so I tried to upgrade to 1.0 and now I think it might be bricked.
I've read LOTS of posts here, but it won't hard reset or go into bootloader. The screen shows nothing, no matter what I do. The battery is good though as it works in my friends Uni. If I plug into my PC I get 'device not recognised' error.
Anybody got any ideas at all, ie flash from SD? Is this possible. I'll try anything!
Thanks in advance.

MTTY
Find a copy of MTTY, as notes on attached txt file, and follow brief notes.
Its a way of issuing commands direct to the PDA.
If its bricked you dont have much to loose :-(
Mike

yes it's work!

Thanks Mike. But the problem is that it just won't go into bootloader. I've tried MTTY before and no luck. It just doesn't see any device connected to my PC.

Thanks for the suggestion but as said before it just won't go into bootloader. Appreciate any other ideas?

Big Yella - what does the phone do? Anything at all?
If it's trully fecked, you'll have to get a gold card or jtag interface. But is there any life in it at all? Do the lights come on when charging?
V

Vijay - the only sign of life is when I push the reset hole and the light flashes red. Also when the battery runs out completely and I plug in the charger the light stays red for about 2 or 3 minutes and then goes out.
Apart from that, nothing. The screen doesn't react to soft/hard reset or trying to put it into bootloader. But it was a perfectly working Uni until I tried to upgrade the bootloader from 0.x to 1.x.
Do you think I deleted the bootloader?
Thanks.

If it's not the battery, I think the bootloader it messed up and bricked...sorry

Sounds like the battery is completely dead to me.
Mine did exactly the same thing a couple of months ago but all I needed was a new battery. Had me very worried for a while too though.
I haven't still got my old knackered battery to check, but I would guess that you should be able to get the bootloader up while the device is connected to the charger (and the LED is on, and red)? Not sure if that will work if the battery is totally screwed, but if it does, then it would at least prove that the bootloader is still "there"...
EDIT: Just noticed that you say the battery works in another Uni - I'm flummoxed then! There's nothing wrong with the actual battery contacts/connections in your Universal is there - 'cause your device really is displaying exactly the same behaviour that mine did when the battery didn't work...

Cheers Sub, but no the battery is ok. It works in my friends Uni and his battery doesn't work in mine.

Edited my post above just too late to catch you! As I said though...

Hmmm. The contacts/connections looks ok. Do yo think its worth taking a screwdriver to it and looking further inside? (I'm more than happy to do that, its way out of warranty)

If this happened just right after the bootloader flashing, I don't think opening it up would help. I really think the bootloader is messed up.

Unfortunately I guess clemsyn is probably right. Shame though cause I was hoping it was just a power problem, which showed the same symptoms in my case.

What shows in the bootloader?
Try connection with MTTY and issuing the "boot" command (no quotes).
Thanks
Dave
I know this is probably a daft question but what is MTTY?
My TP2 is completely stuck on a multi-coloured screen with information on it..
RHOD100 32MB SS-BC
SPL-0.79.0000
MicroP-Rhodium (LED) vA
MicroP-Rhodium (KEY) v4
TURBO HW/TURBO SW
TP MFG DATA
513,534 807,857
812,203 207,204
211, 859 Calibrated
What can I do?
Did you hit the vol down when you turned it on?
You can just pull the battery and turn on normally.
I may have accidentally hit the volume button, I didnt think I did anything different.
I've pulled the battery out, I've even left it an hour hoping it might drain any residual power and take out the memory but no joy.
if I pressed the volume down key and switched it on would it cause this?, I remember older phones needing a complicated combination of at least two or three buttons to be held before it would enter the bootloader.
is there a combination I could use to bring it back?

Read here on how to get MTTY and you to connect it to your PC. Do not try any of the fixes (they are for the Kaiser), I'll posts suggestions here.

Ok... dont ask me how as I have no idea but it's just started working again!!
I havent installed anything or ran any software so I dont know why but I plugged in the USB connection and the charge light appeared, I switched it on expecting the bootloader screen but it's back in Windows!!
I am worried that this could happen again, has anyone heard of strange behaviour like this before?
Also Dave, would you be able to teach me how to fix it if this happens again please?, I have a horrible feeling this wont be the last time I see that screen... without me getting to it on purpose!
Thank you for all your help, it is really appreciated.

It can happen for a number of reasons. Normally cmonex patches the Hard SPL with some fixes to stop it happening for "Random" reasons - so Hard SPL is a good way to fix it (Hard SPL has other benifits too) when it's our. There is no set fix, different causes, different solutions. If the problem becomes common on the Rhodium, I'll do you another sticky.
Thanks
Dave
Thanks Dave, you're a star.
I had this problem on my Kaiser.
Back then, I thought that it would be a problem with the device memory (like corrupted blocks in the bootloader area).
I did the FrankenKaiser to completely "format" the phone and it solved the problem for a while, but then, a month or two later, it appeared again.
I started thinking that it was a problem with the USB connector (pins shorted). Today I believe that this is the culprit. My advice: return the phone and get a new one.

Android killed my USB connection, please help

There is another topic already open... a few guys remained with zero battery while they've ran Android and they can't start the TP2 anymore. Still no solution by now...
I am in a similar position... my phone charged and started... but my USB connection to the computer is dead (no "unknown USB" or something, just plug in and nothing, just charging...)
Believe me, I've tried 3 different computers with XP, Vista or Windos 7, and three different USB cables...
Guys, I really appreciate your work and I am a real tester of new mobile things... but, please, help me. I've already made 3 hard-resets and still nothing, and... I can't instal another ROM because I don't have a USB connection. I have windows 6.5 original HTC version.
Tx in advance.
And, by the way,,, PUT A MAJOR WARNING TO THE GUYS INSTALING ANDROID ON TP2... NOT DRAIN THE BATTERY!!!!!!
Hey
This is also happening to my device. I'd appreciate any advise, help or just someone telling me, to stop being a nerd and to go and buy the Desire.
Thanks in advance.
hi realy i now battery gets realy hot and drains it fast i think its nog good at al for battery and some maybey whil get a dead battery or it has something to do whit your usb in its own or driver malfunction
ps realy think buying the real thing is still the best to do thats why i am gone buy desire
I bought a cradle with sync/charge + charge extra battery from ebay. That saved me a couple of times. Don't forget to add a Battery to the order. I bet your battery is just fine. You just need an external batterycharger.
Just to be well understood.
The phone is going well, in WiMo 6.5 or Android, I can charging the battery with no problem, but... I can't connect it to any PC... that's a real problem...
Is it any posibility to reset the USB driver of the phone or something?

I have wiMo 6.5 HTC original version. I've tried to convert to factory defaults three times... the same.
I did boot again Android with USB and without attached... still nothing...
I suppose it's a driver issue (it's stocked somehow), but how can I get it in the normal state on another method, another than the tried ones?
I really appreciate a helping hand...

For me at least, I don't get any connection via USB to the PC. In bootloader my device only has "Serial". As this condition seems to be permanent, I can only flash from SD card now. Is it really not possible to change from Serial to USB in the bootloader window?

ok well first of all sorry for late response was really busy with work and all.
ok second i didnt build/create or ever attempted to figure out how the haret loader works and how its possible to run andriod on TP2 but i do have quite some exprience with software and loaders. so my question about what happent if you booted andriod again was because i thought if it screws up your settings under WM6.5 and after that fails to boot the right way.
maybe after another boot which is going fine, it auto-corrects the settings under WM6.5 but that was just a wild guess.
ok third about the system settings option stuff
i will try to enlight you i now run Cell EVO v7 and before that i had the Energy rom WM6.5 both had these function but with deferent names.
if i press start-flag at the bottom left in the home screen. and than go to "Settings" button and after that i press "System" than there is an option called "Clear Storage" and i removes ALL settings and changes you made and returns everything back to the first install moment of that ROM. i forgot what this was called under the Energy ROM but it was also under the "System" button.
hope it will make any difference for you good luck!

Nobody has had a "dead TP2" from the android OS. It drains the battery very hard, sometimes yes, but if you know anything about batteries, this also means that the battery is going to need a very good charge again. New batteries are designed to have minimal battery memory anyways.
I had to return a ATT Fuze for the USB connection failing while I was using strictly WM, but i didn't blame it on WM.... I feel like a lot of people are starting posts about these issues who are making huge jumps to conclusion. Is there some hard solid evidence this is even happening? Read these threads on this forum about battery "issues", and a few posts down the line the person is saying "ok, i think everything is fixed, i just needed to charge it" or something along those lines.
I got my external charger today. Plugged it in & left it charging for an hour or so. Got into bootloader and successfully reflashed. Boots fine. Problem solved!
My guess is that Android doesn't have a reserve in place so your battery doesn't get so low that it can't even reboot.
OK, guys,I went at HTC service, after 3 days the phone is again in good condition.. They replaced the mainboard!!! SO, TAKE CARE, ANDROID KILL YOUR PHONE. I SEE NOBODY PUT THIS WARNING ON ANDROID THREAD, although I mentioned it from the very begining.

I find this to sound slightly ignorant.
You're on a website that's all about doing things to your phone that the supplier never intended, jamming things into it to make it do what it never said it would do when you bought it.
The guys here at xda-dev give us some amazing things to move beyond the limits of the phones out-of-the-box, and pretty much everything posted on this site comes with a "do it at your own risk"-warning.
Now you're accusing these people of having "not-so-good-intentions"?
You came to the site, you decided to use what was here knowing full well what that means, so the risk was yours to take. You knew the risks when you signed on, and if you didn't, you weren't paying attention.
I understand and applaud that you're trying to warn people of the consequences, but please don't act as if you shouldn't have known that everything you do with things supplied through this site wasn't completely your decision.
If you want to make absolutely sure your phone isn't at risk, don't tamper with it.
You're right, I was informed about the "do-it-on-your-risk"... and I can't accuse anybody. What I want to do is to put an additional warning" BE CAREFUL, DON'T DRAIN YOUR BATTERY", there are enough warnings on this site of people that got in the same situation like me. Take care of our friends!

Have drained my phone fully MANY times with Android, WAYYY too many to count, and I have never had it kill any hardware. Being on this XDA Developers web page, the "warning" should be unspoken. As many have said before, WinMo does not let your battery drain down all the way to 0%, Android does, therefore the handset will not boot, until the battery has stored enough power again. This is easily fixed by plugging it into a WALL Charger, not a USB Charger.
wow... i thought it was just your average "whoops, bug" moment.
whenever it happens to me, i simply unhook the usb from the phone, hit the reset button on the phone, let it boot all the way into wm, then plug in the usb... it works fine after that.
best of luck

hey,
i have the same problem. I got a looking new universal, I tried to updaty the system, but my battery is very broken, and it crashed while updating. Now, when I try to get in the bootloader, it's crashing.
I hope you can help me!! And I never worked with a windows phone, and I never tried to flash one, so I don't know sth. about doing this...
ebi
There is no backlight in bootloader mode. Go to bootloader, put the screen under a direct light source and see if it says SERIAL or USB (it will be very faint). If it doesn't, the device is almost certainly bricked. Make sure the battery isn't dead and try this while connected to USB or AC charger.
You could also try the mtty method in the stickied topic and see if the device responds at all. It could be a screen problem (long shot though).
Don't forget to remove SD and SIM cards before trying to flash.
Don't think my device is broken, as I successfully updated the ROM, then played with it, forget it more than 2 weeks on my desk. and then never wake up again.
So when battery is dried down, and the internal backup battery (I think it's a supercapacitor), are fully empty, then there is no way to bring it back to life. As the battery only start charging when at least we passed the bootloader sequence, how could we bring it back to life in that case ?
Just in addition to this, I already tried to replace the battery by an external power supply, taking care of the polarity. But without success.
Please advise.
Regards

You would need a fully charged battery when flashing even if you had it on a charger while flashing, the charger will do nothing while theres a ROM being updated.

There would be no lights when in bootloader mode nor lights on the screen but you will see SERIAL at the top and V2.01 or lower at the bottom but you would need to look closely as there are no lights.

Strange Brick

Hey Guys..
I have a Desire here in my Hands with a strange type of Brick.. (at least one I've never seen before) ..
It just does not react to anything at all. The battery is charged and I tested with another cell to be sure that is not the trivial cause.
No Bootloader, No HTC Logo, No reactions at all..
Did happen while flashing a Froyo 2.2 Rom + Radio + App2SD (from the xda forums) via ClockworkMod Recovery but I wasn't there to witness the actual Flash.
After flashing the device hung desperately in a screen with the robot in front of a box with an arrow .. looked like unpacking or so, but wasn't doing anything at all for at least half an hour.
Then battery removed -> Brick.
Anyone got any Idea?

I suspect you removed the battery whilst it was flashing the radio. This is insta-brick territory and as far as I'm aware there is no cure other than sending it in to HTC.
Regards,
Dave
If you can access fastboot as opposed to bootloader you might be talking failing that back to HTC it goes
if your phone can not turn off whilst holding either volume down or the back button then yeah it's a brick, send it off to htc, just say it overheated and wont turn on again

The battery was removed after flashing and rebooting.
Installed in the following order:
32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04.zip
LeeDrOiD_V1.2b.zip
942_desire_froyo_a2sd-signed.zip
every process seemed to work normal, no error happened.
Then rebooted the Desire and the "Box with Android-Bot" Screen appeared.. this hung for 30 min or more when I could not think of any other solution than removing the battery to reset..
After this -> nothing.
I suppose as you say it has to do something with the Radio ROM..
Been coming from OpenDesire 1.6b - every flash ran perfectly up to this point.
Damn, I think this one has to go back to HTC.
Is there any possibility to unbrick a phone thats not responding at all?
Could HTC be aware of the modifications or will they really just go with the "overheated and won't turn on again" explanation?
Thanks for your help so far guys!
Yea, the little Droid with the box thing is during a radio flash and you should never pull the battery during that as it does result in a brick.
Can you reach fastboot as mentioned up above?
..tried pressing the "back" button with the power button and the vol-down button together with the power button..
even did the "insert the battery while holding the button" method..
I don't think I can get the thing to Fastboot..
But I will look further into this and try..
..
Has anyone had a Radio Brick and sent this to HTC before?
Is the repair covered by warranty?
Do you guys think they even get this is no real HW failure?

you know, even one post of you telling me it went allright for another guy is a big relief..
EDIT: just wanted to let you know I tried invoking fastboot via usb and the android PC tools..
just keeps waiting for the device.. and waiting ..

thank u all for ur help i have managed to unlock the phone as described
thanks alot every1

Is my 1+3 dead!?

Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing pretty silly situation with my phone.
So the story begins here:
I was surfing the web while listening to music in the bus when suddenly my oneplus3 randomly turned off and I couldn't turn it back on. (I was on something around 15% on battery so it's not a low battery problem) I tried to turn it on several times and after holding the power button for like 10secs it turned on, and after pressing the power button again (because I needed to get past unlocked bootloader screen and dm-verity) I saw a boot screen. The capacitive button leds turned on and after 3 secs it turned off again, so I started worrying... After a while I tried to access the recovery, but no luck at all. It powers it self off after bootscreen. So I started to research. Tried to flash the entire OS, partritions with msmdownload tool. After several unsuccessful flashes (firehosewritedata failed sometimes while writing userimg or system.img or boot.img) I did get the download complete green text message, and after successful flash, the white LED turned on, even the phone was not plugged in USB or charger and turned off. The screen is completely black and the white led just flashes constantly without blinking or anything. I could only turn the led off by pressing the power button for another 10 secs. And after turning the phone off, problem still remains. After oneplus logo phone shuts down...
I can access bootloader.
And after flashing everything should be on stock, because now I only got screen only about bootloader, no dm-verity..
And of course - I still cannot access the recovery.
p.s. I tried to do the power cycle (as the tech support told me) but still no luck at all.

Are you sure that you did it right? Did your phone show up as mentioned in the instructions?

Follow method 2 from the Hard Brick guide by Naman Bhalla and try two or three times.
Sometimes it takes more than once for restoration.
Since you opened the phone, i think your warranty is gone now.
If the msmdownloadtool didnt help you, there is nothing you can do i think.
try to flash again, and if it still maybe something short inside.
if you have disassembly your phone, try disconnecting various flex cable like camera, sim slot etc that connect to the mainboard, that doesn't prevent device from powered on, then try to turning it on.
if it still, check your mainboard, if you don't know how, send it back.

Is ir really gone? There is a still warranty void sticker on the screw there, but of course it's possible to see by eye that the phone has been opened.
I have an appointment with Level2 tech support @oneplus, they are going to remotely flash the entire OS, but do you think they are using pretty similar technique as the msmdownloadtool?

They are doing the same thing like you did.
I already had a session since i thought they are going to do something "special"
You can try the remote session but im afraid that wont help you if you already did it multiple times.
What about battery? Charged?

Yes battery is charged of course. It's just doint the same thing. Turns on, after a while when bootscreen comes it just turns off and white notification led appears, after that nothing.
I tried to flash it with tool using method 2 for like 15 times with "download complete" messages, but still no luck at all. Tried to erase partritions with fastboot, flashing just only recovery, modded recovery etc. but I still cannot access the recovery nor system. I just don't get it why the phone does not boot into recovery if I flash it or boot it straight away, It just only turns off and that's it. nothing more. Only black screen and white led lighting all the time (after a while the phone turns warm).
I have read all the MsmDownloadTool thread in "Mega Unbrick thread" and saw that few people have experienced the very same situation as me, so I was wondering if there is any fix for this? It's so strange that I was just surfing the Web and it just turned off by it self with like static image for miliseconds and after that just black screen.
There should be any fix. I guess that it's just a partition error...
Ok, not good news. I had a little remote session before a while. They says it's already a hardware problem.

Pfffft you think manufacturers notice when you take apart phones? Hell I took apart my Xperia Z2 because it was having problems and then glued it back together with cyanoacrylate hahahaha (worst thing to do but wtv) and no one noticed though it was seemless and everything looked perfect
Guys, I've got something for you! Not really the same thing as Naman.
p.s. not saying its original hehehehe keep safe
man i got a very similiar problem but my op3 has a black screen i was also on low battery around 5-15% when my phone went off after i was in twrp
Actually I was on twrp too! Also I have recently noticed that recovery loading speed was far too long than normal one. I'm talking for something about 5-7 minutes after reboot into twrp. So, who knows what did happen. Just made an RMA request. Will see how it goes.
Anyway, I was on stock 7.1.1 and it's just rooted with custom recovery and that's it! Nothing more! Is that just a factory failure or maybe it's caused by drops i have had? Nothing serious for a 4-5 times for a half year. Of course I have used it even in winter when the snowflakes are coming down from the sky and little rain. Btw, these liquid indicators are white, so all safe. ::laugh:
