XDA 2s Wifi Guide anyone?

Hi guys, I recently destroyed my XDA2 and got a 2s on the insurance
Bluetooth on WM2003 SE if fair poor, but I managed to upgrade the stack thinger to 3900..... so I'm not completely XDA illiterate.
However, the wifi baffles me! I have access to an unsecured wireless network with internet access, and my 2s will connect to it. When I go on the the internet on my XDA, even with wifi connected it still tries to connect GPRS to use the internet. If I keep clicking cancel, it will load the page (presumably through the wireless network's internet access).
It has become clear that I have no idea what I'm doing with regards to networking. Could someone post a quick guide as to how to set up the wifi (from scratch) so that when it finds an unsecured network it will automatically use it for the internet.
Sorry if there's already a thread on this but I really can't find it. Cheers guys

just what i need as well, i have just bought a wifi router so i can use the internet on my xda2s.
using the wireless manger -> wireless LAN manager i get:
STATUS: connected to network
SSID: NETGEAR
TX RATE: AUTO
MODE:INFRASTRUCTURE
CHANNEL 11
BSSID: 00-09-5B-D7-DC-2A
MAC: 00-09-2D-0B-C0-A6
but even when i pull the Ethnet cable (forgot how its spelt) out of the back of the router it still stays connected. so im thinking its more my PC than the xda. the thing is the router came with no software so i have no idea if its connected properly. when i pull this Ethnet cable out of the wifi router o get network cable unplugged. The network card is Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. Which I have never used.
if anyone has a any ideas it would stop me pulling my hair out.

Mike, I dont think the wifi first and GPRS next works. It doesnt work properly on mine either. If I try a internet access via gprs and a local wifi is readily available, the system does not automatically switch to local wifi.....I think this could be a microsoft issue than a xda issue.

when u pull out the ethernet cable from the back of the router, can you still surf the net from you xda or PC?? that seems odd. So either you are not connecting to "your" own router, or someone else has a same router with unsecured setup and you were locked onto their service....if you follow what I mean. what happens if you kill the power to your router? you should definitely notice that the wifi service disappear in your xda and PC.
Dont expect a router to disappear by simply unplugging the ethernet cable, if the router is powered up, it will show up on your xda and the PC although obviously there will be no internet access.....

sorry if i wasn't clear. i meant i was still receiving a signal from the wifi router. i could never use the internet on the pda

i can browse my pc files wirelessly using resco explorer, using the standard file explorer i can view the pc files using \\network/c and i have finally been able to connect to activesync.
however i still can not connect to the internet.
Any ideas, from looking on this forum it seems lots of peeps are having problems with this but nobody seems to have the answer

XDA Wi-Fi Solution....It Works!!!!

I'm new to the forum and new to XDA2i (presumably XDA2s is same!) ....
I too had many frustrations connecting the wi-fi...but now I've cracked it, here's how.......
On first very first use (or following a hard re-set) device users are prompted to choose “What do you want WLAN to connect to?” The option bullets are ‘Internet’ or ‘Work’….’Work’ should be selected, this will connect them to the nearest WLAN (if this network is WEP encrypted it should be switched to ‘Open’ rather than ‘shared’ as is often the case).
Next prompt asks for any WEP Encryption ‘Pass Key’ to be input, when doing so omit any ‘-‘ between character pairs. Normal start-up should then be completed. Once device is up and running…..
From ‘Start’ pull-down on the ‘Today Screen’ select…. ‘settings’>’connections tab’>’connections icon’>’advanced tab’>’Select Networks’> pull-down ‘My Work Network’ > ‘OK’ out of selections to save and exit.
Go to ‘Wireless Manager’ in programs, select WLAN icon from main screen (which should turn green to show active), then select mini ‘WLAN’ icon from lower toolbar to see the status of the connection, quality of signal etc.
That did it for me......

WIFI problem on M2000 - plz help

Hi,
maybe something im missing here but i was at a friends house the other day and he has a wireless access point set up (open with no encrption set up yet ...just for testing purposes). so basically he is broadcasting his SSID. I turned my wifi on my m2000 and it picked up his access point and showed me that my phone had connected, with the WIFI signal enabled...however i could not browse or use the net which tells me that i was not picking up an IP address...wats going on here? any clues?

if the AP's DHCP sevice is off,you can't get the IP automatically

The DHCP is dodgy on my belkin router, so I have each PC and my BA set up to use a specific IP address, rather than rely on the iffy DHCP.
You may find you need to input a DNS if you do it this way.. just copy one off a working PC

Forgive me if I am talking utter c#$* but if you have established a connection have you not been allocated an IP via DCHP? Just taking a step back from router problems, when setting up the wireless connection did you set up for work or internet profile?

simjo, what you say is prefectly logical, but I have seen cases (as the thread poster was suggesting) where a connection has been created, but no IP addy issued. At these times, no internet access etc is possible. i.e. connection is said to be active, but it is useless.
My solution for this problem was as I posted above, dont bother with DHCP. Set IP addresses manually.

I have a similar problem on a new M2000 (so I'm probably overlooking something)
I can connect my PC and laptop to my router (D-Link 614) on WiFi without any problem
The M2000 can "see" the WiFi but there is no connection
When I try to view pages via GPRS there is no response
When I try MSN Messenger, same again there is no response
I've tried several soft and hard reboots, but no difference
I also find switching the "phone" on is very difficult as I am warned to "The phone is off. Do you want to turn Wireless on"
I then turn Flight Mode on, but am then warned that Orange GPRS cannot connect
I have managed to make some test phone calls, but the menus seem to be taking me round in circles...
Any advice welcome

still had an issue with audio dropping from incoming calls
If you've seen any of my previous posts you'll see the hell i've been in trying to get anything to work with these ROMS, now it ALL works. and I dont say that lightly!
i tried the last 2 factory ROMS from O2 UK 140.237 & 140.242 which is there latest and I had WIFI nightmares with both of those..
I must have spent 30 hours swapping ROMs and this is the best Ive found so far now. Seamless Wireless Hookup everytime! I have Rude FM 88.2 Streaming Live through my Linksys Router at 64k 44khz using Pocket Music 3.2 , Surfing the Net, even the GPRS is stil enabled with the WIFI signal, a special lead pipes the audio to my Amplifier it's been on all day playing variouse stations, Windows Media Player streaming well, even download Skype over the XDA and installed it.

Home LAN ok with WEP but can't connect to works WPA-PSK secured network.

Don't really want to do another ROM upgrade unless it is ABSOLUTELY essential. Anyone have a similar ROM with a working WPA-PSK network?
When we set WPA-PSK on the Blue Angel it insists on 802.1X authentication with either smart card or certificate. Our network doesn't use either but the tick box to turn off IEEE 802.1X access is greyed out on the BA. It isn't greyed out when we use WEP.
Is there a registry setting I could amend to turn off IEEE 802.1X when WPA-PSK is activated.
Do radio upgrades also require full hard resets?
Do hope someone can help.

On the Network Key screen what are you setting in the Authentication drop down? You should be choosing WPA-PSK and Data Encryption TKIP. Uncheck if checked The Key is provided for me automatically, and enter the key in network key box. Key index should be 1 by default. You should IGNORE the 802.1x tab.
I will let others answer regarding the Radio ROM upgrade as I am not sure what exists for the BA. But I doubt that this would solve the question anyway.

We are doing exactly as you say (TKIP, uncheck auto key, enter key & key index 1). We haven't been trying to set the details on the 802.1x tab but when we failed to connect we took a look at it.
We have MAC filtering set up and have included the BA MAC address (as provided by vxIP). Checked and double checked the key.
Just been informed that setting EAP type to PEAP in 802.1x tab rather than smart card or certificate might help.
Fingers crossed this will fix it.

Does anyone know if AKU2 introduces support for WPA2/AES/EAP-TLS or EAP-TTLS?
Now, there's a trick I think I read here before:
type your PSK with your on-screen keyboard, not the hardware keuboard.
Give it a try and let us know.

All suggestions greatly appreciated, I think I have been trying the on screen keyboard but I will recheck.

Blue Angel will not connect to 802.11G network
I thought I would try out a few of the suggestions on my home LAN even though it was working fine under WEP. Then I would be set up for the office LAN on Monday (or so I thought).
It turns out my wireless access point does not have WPA-PSK facility (I may look for a firmware upgrade tomorrow).
However when I changed the network from mixed mode to just 802.11G I was unable to connect to it. Resetting back to mixed mode & it connects ok. It would appear that my problem is not WPA-PSK but more specifically 802.11G networks. Does WPA-PSK only operate on 802.11G networks or can it run on 802.11b?
I have seen the 5 page thread on the Wizard index relating to a cab installation / registry fix to enable 802.11g access. Unfortunately the cab didn't install on the Blue Angel.
Can anyone suggest a fix and do you have 802.11g access with your Blue Angels?

BA does not have 802.11g. The Wizard supports it with appropriate ROM or Registry updates.
WPA-PSK is independent of B/G. So, yes, if your workplace is G only then this could explain the problem that you are having.

Thanks jbn, it's starting to make sense now.
I have just made the registry entries required by the Wizard to my BA. I'll reboot and set network to g and see how it goes..............

DID NOT WORK. Perhaps the BA hardware simply can't do 802.11g. Can anyone confirm the WiFi of the BA is different to the Wizard AND not capable of 802.11g?

IIRC, the BA uses TI's TNETW1110 chip, which does *NOT* support 802.11g at all. The code for supporting the newer TNETW1130 (which is what I think they use in the Wizard) is actually present ... which is why WiFi will become disabled if you turn on the 802.11g registry hacks in your BA ...

BA cannot do 802.11g because of the hardware. Never, ever.
If you have a g access point, it must be set to mixed mode for the BA (or any b-only device) to connect. Note that while the b device is active on the network, any other g clients will see slower connect speeds because of the compatibility mode. This is why some homogeneous environments would set to disallow b connections.
As far as WPA-PSK goes, I am using it with my BA. Any connect problems I've had were always due to something set wrong on the AP. The BA is WPA, not WPA2 (a/k/a 802.11i). Also, it does not support the AES mode of encryption. So make sure your AP is set to WPA-PSK (1 is usually implied when 2 is not supported) and TKIP, not AES or TKIP+AES.
One other suggestion. If you happen to be using a certain type of Linksys AP, there was a bug in one version of the firmware whereby if you had ever entered WEP keys and then tried to switch to WPA, it wouldn't work without first clearing the WEP keys with a hard reset. I had this issue and it drove me crazy until I read about the solution.

Could I connect a 802.11b wireless access point to my desktop / laptop at work (connected to the internet) and connect my BA to the access point without slowing down the rest of the network?
It is good to know that the BA can do WPA-PSK even if only at 802.11b. I realise 802.11b is fast enough for the BA but if corporate networks are running at 802.11g then the BA will fail to connect at any speed.
Any other solutions to connect a BA to 802.11g?
ActivSync is ok but I would prefer wireless.
Is there a SD LAN card that would do 802.11g (plus WPA-PSK)?

Enabling mixed mode on a decent Wireless Access Point will not force all clients to run at 11Mbps. Those that can will do 54, those that can't won't.

You can do that.
However your IT staff would probably go beserk.
I check regularly to ensure that none of my users has done the very thing ... One user demended that he be allowed to and got very annoyed when I refused. He didn't see anything wrong with introducing a consumer grade (read low security) AP into an environment where we had paid top dollar for AP's with heavy security and spent many many hours locking everything down as much as humanly possible.
Remember WPA-PSK is not intended for enterprise level security ... it's better than WEP but given a poor passphrase it's vulnerable.

If I use a complex passphrase (WPA-PSK) and MAC filtering I am assuming it will be relatively safe i.e. as safe as the main network since that is what the network guys have set up.
Having recently purchased an E100, 2 off E200's a C500 and a M2000, together with about 3GB of SD cards my budget is rather stretched.
As soon as I can I will pick up a SD LAN card and post my results.

802.11b devoces will impact 802.11g device!

I have to partly disagree with you:
using mixed mode will negatively impact the throughput of you .11g network.
This is due to the protection bit that is being set then for the .11g devices/APs.
The global effect is that while the datarate of the 11g clients will be of 54Mbps (potentially), the real throughput on an enterprise grade AP will be at best around 17/18Mbps instead of 25-27Mbps.
That's a very good reason for corp netadmins to try and ban .11b devices on an 11g network...
Doormat, I agree with you. In my terminology an AP brought by an end-user in a corp network qualifies as a rogue AP and will be immediately blocked.
WPA2/802.11i/RSN with eap-tls/ttls or PEAP is the first basic rule of thumb... Even @home that's what I run. Call me paranoid ;-)

hal, you are technically correct of course, but the net result in most configurations is not noticeable as far as performance goes. There is a huge difference with WAPs that were forced to B for all clients when only one such client had connected amongst a set of Gs. In my (limited I accept) experience there is no practical difference for most of the time. In high bandwidth environments it is an academic discussion because in those circumstances systems should be connected using 100BaseT or GigE in a switched network rather than a collision-prone network.
Let's not lose sight of the original question though with this level of technical conversation!

BA like Modem GPRS [HELP]

Hi, first of all sorry for my english...
This is my problem: I have a BA Windows Mobile 2003 and I want to use it like a modem for my laptop (using gprs connection).
I read the wiki Blue Angel as USB Modem but something is not working.
My laptop OS is Microsoft Vista. I can see the "HTC USB Modem" in the modem list and the port selected automatically during installation was COM4 and I don't know how to change it if necessary. If I launch the "USB MODEM Dialer" in my laptop i can't see a modem available (Modem: <No USB Modem>).
The BA is connected to the laptop using the USB cradle.
Someone can help me?
Is there a way to connect the laptop using wifi with the BA and use the the gprs connection to reach internet? I tried WMWifiRouter but it is not compatible with Windows Mobile 2003.

hello and welcome to the forum, there are several options for you:
- you could try -=HTC Wifi Router=-, which is much better than wmwifirouter, but might not work with wm2003, sorry i can't test that, i use wm6.5
- and that would be the next thing, why not try and use another rom, nobody forces you to use such an outdated OS, try wm5, wm6, wm6.1 or wm6.5, you wouldn't have any problems with incompatible software then.
- or, and that might just be the one you'd pick you make up an ad-hoc wlan connection.
the way to do it is:
1. make sure, your pc has all the drivers needed for wireless lan installed
2. ALL of them, forget windows zero config, when it comes to ad-hoc, install all the nifty little tools, you thought, you could live without, because from now on, you can't anymore.
3. then open the tools and make them the default program for managing wireless communication, so that then, when you take the windows wlan search, it does not search for networks, but says, "some other program is managing wlan, windows can't search for networks" or something similar, then you are right and coming closer.
3.a you might have realized, i can't describe all that in detail. i don't know, your wlan device manufacturer, your native language and many other aspects necessary to describe with more detail.
4. on your pc, go to "network connections" right click your wireless device and go to properties.
5. select TCP/IP v4 and click settings
6. set it on manual and choose the following, from top to bottom:
ip 192.168.1.101
snm 255.255.255.0
gw 192.168.1.1
dns 192.168.1.1
adns 192.168.1.2
7. go to your device and call up start->settings->connections->network cards, go to the 2nd panel, select the tiaxclwlan(or something like that) and set the ip config on manual and use these settings:
ip 192.168.1.1
snm 255.255.255.0
gw 192.168.1.1
dns 192.168.1.1
adns 192.168.1.2
8. having all these things set, you can now start your ad-hoc wlan on your pc, using the manufacturer's tools, which should provide you with an option to set up a new ad-hoc
9. select encryption wep and choose a key according to the regulations of wep keys (13 numbers are just fine i believe)
10. take your BA and start looking for wlans in range, make sure "all networks" is selected, and NOT "just accesspoints"
11. as soon as the network is found, connect and enter the key you picked in 9.
12. as soon as you are connected your gprs connection should be shared with the pc. since i am not an expert when it comes to gprs and i don't have my device with me, because i am at work and just can't re-create the conditions, i had to write this all by heart, maybe there are some inaccuracies, but, as always, there are small things to be determined by intelligent guessing or googling

2) (try wm5, wm6, wm6.1 or wm6.5): i will do it in the future, but I need a fast solution in one/two days. I will try with wm6.5 after holidays
3) I followed what you suggested (not only the nifty little tools, I don't know what they are and where they are). At the end of all I have the laptop and the BA connected wireless, but I can't open gprs connection on the BA. To do it, i usually opened a web page with IE, but if i do it now, IE will try to find the page using wi-fi connection and not trying to open a gprs connection.

The edit button in the forum is not working, so i write another post:
if i go to "Wireless manager" i can connect to gprs and i can see the gprs button green. Then i go to "Wireless LAN management" or something similar (i don't know because I have an italian OS) and i click on "Wireless lan actived" to connect to the laptop. If I go back to Wireless manager i can see the gprs button becoming red and the wlan button becoming green. And i lose the gprs connection.

that is too bad, as mentioned before i am not an expert on gprs, in fact i never used it before, because it is hellishly expensive but i used the other way around often, connect via ad-hoc wlan to a pc, connected to the internet by lan, i even connected to a wlan router once that was not connected to the network, but another client pc, connected to the internet via lan and connected to the router allowed me to go through the router and then through the pc to the net, that was neat, those things are, where i recalled the ad-hoc informations, who would have guessed the BA was as "smart" as preferring the free and faster connection. there must be a way to force it!
i will continue to think about it and hope more senior members have a look into this and maybe advise you on how to do it (although i have to admit, at this point i believe, before a solution is found, more than one or two days might pass by, which makes upgrading a faster alternative again )

SD(HC) Tweaks (oh, and wifi too)

Do any tweaks need to be performed on the tp2 for SD xfer speed? I saw the tune-up cab posted on this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446366) and was just wondering if it would apply to our phones as well.
Also.. Whats the highest xfer you get over wifi (SMB).. One large(ish) file.. I can only get about 530KB (kilobytes, not bits)... Signal strength is excellent. Laptop is connected via dual-band wireless-n. The average 802.11g client gets about 3.0MBps on my network. The wifi signal strength on my phone doesn't seem to impact the transfer speed (greatly).. meaning.. there is no flux between 5 bars and 3 bars. Doesn't that indicate an internal bottleneck? What bus does this wifi card 'ride'? PCI or usb?

530KB (kilobytes, not bits) equal 4240Kb (kilobits) which is close to 4Mbps.

Once you figure out your bits/bytes come back and edit your post.
If you're getting 3mbit on 802.11g then something is wrong with your wireless, period. For a duplex connection (ie: one radio does send/receive) you'll get about 24mbit max. I get 22-23mibt typically on my wireless laptop to my access point here at the house. I haven't bothered to test the Tilt 2's wifi however.

I don't think I mixed anything up.
G notebook clients get about 3MBps or 24Mbps on my network.. N client to gigabit wired server (router is 610N, gigabit eth ports) gets 11MBps (I think)..
My touch pro2 comes around and gets 4 megabits or ~.5 megabytes/sec.. How does that happen? Probably for the same reason my zune 8gb (flash) gets those speeds. So what is that reason?
Wheres the bottleneck? Wifi antenna? Comm bus between wifi chip and phone storage? What do our wireless cards look like anyways? Perhaps there is one antenna. That wouldn't surprise me..
Regarding the SD isssue: I selected to mount the phone as a usb device instead of active sync.. I got about 3 MBps write. I think I need to get a Class 6 card.

Enabling wifi to stay on during standby and then putting it into standby actually sped things up... Anything remotely proc intensive tends to smack the wifi transfer around a bit. Its not really an issue of SD card access. But then again, the SD card access could be impacted by processor usage and in turn slow down the wifi.
There are a handful of settings in the wifi reg key BCMSDDHD1 that start with SD... Why? I need to fire up the dd-wrt router and see if this actually connecting at 54g.
btw: speed up was from ~430KBps to 600KBps.

I also have this problem with slow wifi connection and wonder if there iare any bottleneck.
I understand what you mean but people probably will get confused when you write about 5 megabytes/sec speed for tp2, dont you mean 5 megabits/sec?
