ROM - total novice

Ok, despite many hours searching around the site trying to find an idiots guide to ROM and all the rest, I am still clueless.
I have no problem in admiting that I have absolutely no idea what a ROM is, or why I should upgrade, or why the MDA one is better than the o2 one etc etc...........
If someone with an idea can spare 5 mins to reply to this and give me a brief intro as to the what's, why's and when's I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
HPJ
spend some time in WIKI
both in Himalaya and BlueAngel
There are much alike. Himalaya is older and has a more complete section, but BlueAngel is catching up

Thanks for the link. Appreciate it.
Thank you, very informative...
i would like to add more information to it with components identification and more details about disassembling and assembling. but for this i need to remove binding around the chips, which is not something i am ready to do at the moment.
on a reality it is very quick to disassemble this device. takes about 10 min. to take it apart. construction looks better thought-out compared to Prophet for example.
no wifi
I opened mda Compact III arte110 and there is no wifi antenna.

You right.
And chip is also missing on the board.
The bad thing is that some people when they were buying this device did not know about the fact that Wi-Fi functionality is missing, and sellers were not much informed, as well. Bad trick..
regards,
anyone care to give me some tip on how to get the catches on page 8,9,10 to let go of the case?
I really can't seem to get it loose.
In the PDF this step is described as hard, but there is no indication how the author did it.
I have ordered myself some tools for caseopening.. so I'm hoping the whole prosess is easier then.
If anyone have opened this case, perhaps can sheld some light on how they did this step.
okey. seems a bent tweezer works ok.
horizontal in, behind the hooks, then pull

u have checked that the chip is also missing, and seen it with ur own eyes or are you just stating other information...cuz if only the antenna is missing, one could think of a solution...
I needed to replace my screen recently and found the Artemis-inside pdf to be only useful up to a point. Wrote my own guide in case people might find it useful:

Guide/ tutorial for htc dream/g1 jtag

Hey everyone,
Im looking for a good tutorial or guide to jtag a htc dream. i beleive i saw a page with a video once but i dont recall where it is on xda anymore.
If someone can provide me with a guide or video as to how to jtag your htc dream that would be great!
omgkush
anyone tell me if this is a good jtaging guide?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eITMEEF_AIc
There is a JTAG guide:
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/JTAG_DREAM_AND_MAGIC
I haven't tried to JTAG anything before but I am looking to do so for my G1.
I am in the UK and built a G1 serial cable (it works perfectly) after buying the parts from CoolComponents and SKPang also in the UK. I followed the Android-G1-Serial-Cable instructable.
I haven't opened my G1 yet and from what I've read I'm not sure I have the soldering skills to solder wires to the JTAG points on the G1 motherboard so I was thinking of buying whats in the video you linked.
I am unsure what to buy for the ARM JTAG debugger or what else I'll need. The JTAG guide mentions a LM317 to generate the 2.6v reference voltage and has a picture showing a circuit but I don't know much at all about such things so I haven't a clue how to go about building it.
A more detailed step-by-step JTAG building guide would be very helpful so hopefully someone is in the process of creating one.

I don't have this device myself and it can be challenging to answer this as there's allot of battery options out there to choose from that some individuals prefer/like and some don't (kinda like "what works for me may not work for you" situation).
I would suggest/recommend that you take a look at the following "Accessories" area of the forum that's specific to your device and variants...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/accessories
... You'll notice a good handful of threads there with their topics/discussions regarding various battery options and such.
Good Luck!
