ROM - total novice - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Ok, despite many hours searching around the site trying to find an idiots guide to ROM and all the rest, I am still clueless.
I have no problem in admiting that I have absolutely no idea what a ROM is, or why I should upgrade, or why the MDA one is better than the o2 one etc etc...........
If someone with an idea can spare 5 mins to reply to this and give me a brief intro as to the what's, why's and when's I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
HPJ

spend some time in WIKI
both in Himalaya and BlueAngel
There are much alike. Himalaya is older and has a more complete section, but BlueAngel is catching up

Thank you to all.

To all participants in these forums:
I want convey a HUGE THANK-YOU to all of the contributers to these forums.
A couple of months ago I decided it was time to replace my IPAQ 4150 for something with a bit more functionality. As I was researching what my next device would be, I stumbled across xda-developers.com and my decision was made. I decided on the i-mate pda2k specifically becuase all of the hard work done by the people here meant that I would no longer have to wait for the vendor to issue upgrades and I could customize my device to MY requirements!
After having read most of the Blue Angel Upgrading threads, and the wiki (about 20 times) I've managed to perform a number of upgrades and cook a half-decent extended rom. (naturally I screwed it up a couple of times, and had a brick for about a week but I managed to recover after having read many of the "help-me" threads)
A special thanks to MDAIIIUser, TheLastOne, HappyGoat and a few others (you know who you are) for contributing so much of their time hacking and converting roms, troubleshooting extended rom issues and also for being so incredibly patient and helpful when answering questions from newbie's like myself.
I look forward to being a contributer to this community and I hope that I can bring 1/10th of the value to the forum that many of you bring every day.
So, once again - Thank-you to all!
.... and you didn't have to ask one question????
Fortunately, the mistakes I made were similar to those made by many before me. Most of the information I needed to repair the brick I had created was available in the threads.
Now I see that i-mate has released the 1.40 rom so I hope all of my effort and frustration wasn't for nothing!

Can you point out where, or the link to, the 1.40 rom is???
Thanks,
Tom
I think I saw someone say they were uploading it to the ftp site.
Try here.

Please let me know how it works out. I'm curious to see what's in the extended rom.
you know, I am sorry to hijack the thread somewhat, but I need to say thanks also, I did ask one question, but "search" led me to may answers, I have given a few things back to this site, but I do plan to add more, so... Thanks everyone...
You are all very welcome...I do this as a hobby, and appreciate the positive feedback..!

CAB's 101

First off, let me apologize for asking what to many is probably a straightforward question, but I've spent the better part of the last two days stumbling around, and as Moses did after 40 years, I figure it's time to stop and ask directions....
Recently received a PPC 6800 Mogul (Sprint) after many years of Treo and BB use. Let me say that I love and hate the phone at the same time. Love the fact that it operates like a PC....hate the fact that it takes forever to boot up. But such is life.
In my travels on this site and others this weekend I've downloaded some cool apps and I've been able to get a few running on the phone. But as I've done so I've realized I need to get some basic CAB or Windows Mobile 101 training.
Is there a thread or threads on here someone would recommend I read to learn the basics of using CAB's or other ways to load apps onto my phone? I really like the way the phone is easier to understand than the Palm OS and WAY better than the BB OS. But I think I'm at the point of being able to get myself into trouble, but not out of it.
Thanks in advance for your patience, your help and your humor as I plod through this. I'll keep you posted as to my successes, and maybe amuse some of you with my blunders.
"I don't find trouble, it just seems to know my address."
Great Start!
Thanks Mike, this is a great start!
With my skill level (and I'm part Irish, so Murphy is always lurking out there somewhere) I'm going to invest in the backup software.
Appreciate your help!
- Here we go, into the wild blue yonder!
HERE is a great place to find some cab files....
Enjoy!

a little typo there ...
although, once in awhile we do get an EXE that specifically meant to be run on the device too ... so you're not 100 % off there

Could Anyone help?

Hiya everybody!
I would love if someone could give me directions on where I can get good ROMs for flashing my brand new Artemis...
I'm brazilian, but I'm looking for a ROM in english with the best functions that people could get together....
I'm totally new to modding in here, tho I'm sorta pro in modding Motorola's MotoMING phone (my last one)
So if anyone could help me with directions of a newbie guide, I'd be glad....
I could write a newbie guide myself later on....when I lose the newbie status LOL
Check here for tips http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=362
There are also quite a number or ROMs in there too.
Although I would definately recommend this one.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365312 .. great speed, very light so you can add all your own apps and customize it how you like. Generally speakingm, after flashing alot of ROMs to my Orbit, I tend to stick with Meschle's ROMs and usually stick to his latest Vanilla. Although as I say there are alot of others, depends what your looking for from the ROM.
Any other questions Id be glad to help. I also have quite a collection of prgrams n customiations n stuff if your looking anything.
Thanks a lot for the hand!
It surely will come handy! I got the USPL to go over the CID locking system....
The carrier problem can be solved by the carrier itself, at least nowadays.....
To tell the truth, I'm in need of some tutorials on the best programs to have, what kind of stuff fits well in it...
I work with game design, and I'm starting to develop on python....I was wondering if there is anyway to run python programs in it too...
Last but not least, how much knowledge is necessary to work with Artemis?!?!!? LOL
Hmm unfortunately I dont do programming n such, i think you probably be better off asking those questions in the artemis developement / hacking section
If you were to develop Pocket PC applications, you may use eVC (free) or VS2005/8 (more expensive)
No idea about pythons.
How much knowledge? Probably nothing or as much as it is needed to read english. All you need is to experience and experiment to learn.
Regards,
Carty..
@fubofo
Thanks for answering again, man! I know that not everyone is a fan of programming stuff....
I got the ROM you said you were using and I'm gonna flash it today...hope it works and I don't end with a 15 hundred bucks brick....
@Carty
When I said knowledge, I ment time spent studying stuff made for it and etc...but still the ability to read english is way too complex for some people in my country....
I'll take a look at the eVC and see what can be done in it....
I have Eclipse's SDK and Visual Studio 2008 here....any of them is good for it?

Upgrading Ipaq's

Ok, I get that "newbs" like me just need to read and do our own research, agreed..!!
How do I determine who made my ROM in my Ipaq's? I have no clue if it's a Wallaby, Blue Angel, Alpine, Magician, Wizard, etc.. I'm happy to vest the time and research needed, but a nudge in the right direction would be very appreciated.
Long story short, I'm trying to upgrade Ipaq 5450 with Windows CE2002 to 2003. I hope someone will take the time to assist me.

Look around on HP's pages. If they no longer sell it, Torrent it.

Thank you for everything... Leaving S620 World.

Hello everyone.
First of all, I´d like to say thank you to everyone here. I´ve learned a lot here, and knowledge is something you keep with you forever, no one can take it away. I´m thankful for all the knowledge i got from here. From you!
My device is tired.. It has a few hardware problems that I can´t put up with. I was told that the motherboard is damaged. I can´t afford that change... I mean... I could, but i´m not willing to. I´m moving on to another device. Not sure wich one, but I think that Samsung Galaxy S is a good choice.
Anyway, I will still be around, helping people the way I can, but I´ll be no longer a excalibur user.
Thank you, for everything.
Regards.
Special thanks to:
Mr.Ookba, for his guidance and trust!
Mr.Kavana, for his WM 6.1 (that´s the reason I got here)
Mr.Rickywatt, and Mr.Stylez.
Sorry to see you living. We will miss your great insights. I hope you keep showing here from time to time.
Vamos Maradona!
i miss this device this was a great forum miss developing for it
