Upgrading Ipaq's - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Ok, I get that "newbs" like me just need to read and do our own research, agreed..!!
How do I determine who made my ROM in my Ipaq's? I have no clue if it's a Wallaby, Blue Angel, Alpine, Magician, Wizard, etc.. I'm happy to vest the time and research needed, but a nudge in the right direction would be very appreciated.
Long story short, I'm trying to upgrade Ipaq 5450 with Windows CE2002 to 2003. I hope someone will take the time to assist me.

Look around on HP's pages. If they no longer sell it, Torrent it.

ROM - total novice

Ok, despite many hours searching around the site trying to find an idiots guide to ROM and all the rest, I am still clueless.
I have no problem in admiting that I have absolutely no idea what a ROM is, or why I should upgrade, or why the MDA one is better than the o2 one etc etc...........
If someone with an idea can spare 5 mins to reply to this and give me a brief intro as to the what's, why's and when's I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
HPJ
spend some time in WIKI
both in Himalaya and BlueAngel
There are much alike. Himalaya is older and has a more complete section, but BlueAngel is catching up

Upgrade to WM5.0, Reassurence needed! N00b!

(reposted in correct forum)
Hi folks,
I was interested in upgrading to WM5.0 from WM2003 on my SPV M2000 (=XDA 2???I'm told it's a blue angel...). However since I've come here i've got the impression that it could be riddled with problems. I'm a total n00b and I've been overwhelmed with different ROM versions and fixes....I wondered if you folks could help me a bit.
Is it worthwhile to upgrade? What has your experience been?
Will old WM2003 programs work on WM5.0 (I have loads of them)
Are there any bugs I should know about or will everything run smooth?
What are the disadvantages?
How do I go about upgrading? I upgraded my ROM once before using an update released by Orange. But the .exe file did it all for me. All I had to do was connect the device via the cradle and click next (pretty much).
Cheers folks! Much appreciated.

PS - is this the correct forum? (I'm guessing SPVM2000 is a hymalaya)
PPS - sorry if some of these questions have come up before. I'm sure a few of them must - I checked as best I could but I'm a total n00b and I'm dyslexic which doesn't make post plodding easy.
Thanks again!
help please! Some of you guys must have some ideas or thoughts that might help me!
Like you I also have an SPV M2000 (yes it is also known as the Blue Angel), and I am still running WM2003, I have done a few ROM upgrades etc so have a very basic understanding but even so am still holding back on upgrading to WM5, my main reason is that my phone is for work, and so need it to be reliable. saying that it sounds like that they have done some fantastic work porting WM5 onto the Blue Angel and one day I look forward to running it (which may be very soon).
Sounds like to me though before making your decision you should read this..

And I REALLY hope you have read the Wiki page which is here...

As with any upgrade there is a chance you will turn your device into a brick, so you need to read thorugh all the previous posts, there is a search tool to allow you to search the forum (USE IT!), I am sure people here would love to help you but have a bit of respect and search the forum first, I expect every question you could think of has been answered before.
Somewhere there is a list of software that has been tested on WM5, cant be bothered to search for it, but I have seen a post on the forum somewhere!
EDIT:
Sorry didn't read the bottom part of you post, that will teach me!! Hope the links I have given you get you started though!!!
Dont bother with WM2005 yet. I tried it a month ago and found little glitches. Overall it was good, but eyecandy doesnt justify the upgrade. Speedwise it's the same.
Also, there's still not as many WM5 programs, as there are for WM2003. Old progs may have issues with WM5. For me that's reason enough to stick with WM2003, since I need stability.
If you hard reset your phone, install only progs that you really need AND use, you'll be amazed how quick and stable it'll be. Yes, BT and WiFi are flaky, but that happens right across the board on all OSes/ROMs.
PS. Avoid any crap that goes onto Today screen.

CAB's 101

First off, let me apologize for asking what to many is probably a straightforward question, but I've spent the better part of the last two days stumbling around, and as Moses did after 40 years, I figure it's time to stop and ask directions....
Recently received a PPC 6800 Mogul (Sprint) after many years of Treo and BB use. Let me say that I love and hate the phone at the same time. Love the fact that it operates like a PC....hate the fact that it takes forever to boot up. But such is life.
In my travels on this site and others this weekend I've downloaded some cool apps and I've been able to get a few running on the phone. But as I've done so I've realized I need to get some basic CAB or Windows Mobile 101 training.
Is there a thread or threads on here someone would recommend I read to learn the basics of using CAB's or other ways to load apps onto my phone? I really like the way the phone is easier to understand than the Palm OS and WAY better than the BB OS. But I think I'm at the point of being able to get myself into trouble, but not out of it.
Thanks in advance for your patience, your help and your humor as I plod through this. I'll keep you posted as to my successes, and maybe amuse some of you with my blunders.
"I don't find trouble, it just seems to know my address."
Great Start!
Thanks Mike, this is a great start!
With my skill level (and I'm part Irish, so Murphy is always lurking out there somewhere) I'm going to invest in the backup software.
Appreciate your help!
- Here we go, into the wild blue yonder!
HERE is a great place to find some cab files....
Enjoy!

Hi
exe files you run on the PPC and next time you connect to AS it will auto install the programme on the PPC.

a little typo there ...
although, once in awhile we do get an EXE that specifically meant to be run on the device too ... so you're not 100 % off there

Help please, Cotel Windows W1 WM5 PDA

Hey folks, great forum. I have searched the forum to no avail
Could someone please help me with the following PDA - it's a cotel Windows W1 PDA running WM5, probably unheard of by most. I bought it in Dubai recently. Is there anyway I can upgrade it to WM6, if so which rom & software should I use. All i know is its running on OMAP730/ARM926T chip. I have no idea of its ipl/spl version or if its G3 or G4, cannot find anything out about it. The following link might give you a little more insight, its the very top left one.

I really hope someone can help me out here, thank you much.
**BUMP**
No idea's anyone??
I'd like to know as well. The only thing I was able to figure out is that it runs on a custom WM5 for PocketPC ROM.

good bet to assume no one has played with this phone yet? Yes?

hacking wm 6 pro (or 6.1) on to ipaq 210/211 series

a real life friend of mine and i are serious about getting one of these units into the right hands to unlock/hack/make-a-kitchen. i dont know who is capable/trustworthy and/or where to start. so help me out here, who should i talk to?
I had a good experience with this back in the day with the familiar linux project on a 3970 ipaq (shipped one to someone in the UK who hacked it pretty quick) so i wanna try the same thing with the 211.
thanks!
I see no reason to try to hack WM6 pro when the classic version is the same, minus the phone support. As for WM6.1, most of the changes are meant for pocket pc phones, but it's worth a try.
#1 future OS upgrades
#2 wm6.1 pro > wm6
#3 cooking your own rom, taking out excess crap always speeds it up.
#4 CF aircard
#5 (the most important) geekyness
im suprised anyone on these boards would even question "why to hack"... the answer is, because its there!

come on come on people....
Makes me wish I knew a little so I can cook something on my own. This PDA is a powerhouse monster than is bogged down by crappy software design.
so, anyone interested?
Response
Hey dudes, some news-
I regularly monitor over a dozen threads and boards concerning this issue, and here's the CURRENT STATUS of this project-
No developments have been made.
We can put linux on the SD card, and boot from that... but other than that, HP has made it nearly impossible for us to do ANYTHING to the original ROM that's in there. Granted, it's a POS, especially considering all the god aweful processes that HP has running in the background. I was this changed as much as anyone. No I saw earlier on that someone is willing to have their device worked on/submitted for experimentation. If this is true, then that's a big plus... I'll give a link in a sec showing where you can go to discuss that. There are a number of people working on this issue, but sadly, none of them are on here really... XDA is not the place to go for PDA support. Granted, almost anyone can get their questions answered, but no one on here is working on this problem to my knowledge.
http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=265547&page=5
This thread is based on a false alarm that someone had for making a 6.1 ROM, but we're continuing the search here, and to my knowledge is one of the only regularly active threads concerning this. We have made some developments, but nothing concrete yet... HP's a ***** with this PDA.
If anyone has any other links to share, do so... I need all the information I can get on this, as I'm sure alot of you do. If anyone even reads this, then good- I'll know my little speech here wasn't all wasted.
Noxem Computers, ottoman96
If you re-navigate over to Brighthand, there has since been a few big steps in the right direction for new ROMs. The 210/2xx forum has a few threads with some good progress. Anyone interested or thinking they can lend some expertise should head over there. Peace.
Dave
