Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Has anybody seen this beast in the wild yet? The Exchange SP2 went live today with push and remote-wipe ability but according to Microsoft it can only be licensed by the manufacturer/carrier...
... so has anybody seen this feature pack available for download?
-Vlad
http://www.vladville.com

Okay, since nobody replied I decided to call my contact at Microsoft (Sr. Product Manager at MS Mobile & Embedded devices) and here is the skinny:
- MSFP will be complete and released to manufacturing within a month
- After testing this software will be distributed by the manufacturer
- It will not require a flash, just installation (might depend on manufacturer)
- Expect to see something within 2 months of next months release to manufacturing.
Go figure.
-Vlad

Yep, just recieved my response today from my account reps. It is currently planned to be distributed through the vendors only. The verbiage I recieved suggested that vendors may distribute two different device versions (with and without MSFP) and that they may not be required to include all of the features advertised in the MSFP. I've screamed about this and am waiting to see if I recieve any clarification. For the moment I've withdrawn my recommendation of WM5 devices for purchase by my company (since I don't know if upgrades will be availiable) and even when we start seeing the MSFP availiable I'm not going to recommend a device until I have personally verified the presense of the full feature pack. Definitely a bummer.
Oh, and for months now we have been told that it would be availiable at the same time as E2K3SP2...

MSFP Update?
Anyone have a copy of the MSFP? I heard iMate have just released it for their official WM5 devices, and am hoping the install will work on the PDA2K.

MSFP is not standalone update, but it is included in newer roms only for WM5 devices, maybe it will be ported to BA , but it is early to say

Theory on next ROM releases

I have a small theory as to when the next ROM updates are going to ship.
Well since the Universal is running the WM 2005 and the SP2 for Exchange already shipped, all we are missing for the push feature is the MSFP (Messaging & Security Feature Pack). SO the OEMs are dying to win corporate users to use the universal or magician, since also the fact that Blackberry might have to stop selling in the US...
Taking all that into account I would expect that iMATE & O2 are going to wait with the release to incorporate the MSFP into the ROM. T-Mobile might also this time join since they are dying to get as much bussiness customers as possible. Here in holland the MDA PRO was available to Businesss customers 2 and a half weeks before they started selling it to consumers. I can verify that because I work as an ICT manager and I was contacted by T-Mobile rep who wanted to come and deliver me the MDA PRO the next day if I agree to take a subscription. I have refused that since we use KPN and UMTS and t-mobile has no UMTS yet. But knowing t-mobile maybe they still are going to let the chance go.
Also this is the reason the QTEK has not released their device at least here in the NL you can not get it yet it is expected in the end of November. the Qtek 9100 (magician) is already in the shops but that device is meant for consumer market. the QTEK 9000 is the business device and I think (maybe I am wrong) it will ship already with the MSFP in it. As I remember reading Microsoft should release the MSFP in the first half of November...
PLease feel free to comment critisize etc. But keep in mind this is just a theory...I might have some facts wrong!
Oh Yea I forgot Orange which is also not yet released at least here in the NL
My theory has just received a blow...
I have just seen two online stores in NL claiming to have the QTEK 9000 in stock. Although on the www.qtek.nl the device is only mentioned that it exist and further no aditional info. And this coming from the site which was the first one to post the 3D anymation of the QTEK 9100.
I have to look into this first thing monday, if they realy have them in stock.
P.S. For those interrested the two stores are:
www.smartphonestunts.nl & www.smartphoneshop.nl
I believe that all operators are waiting for MS to supply the update before they can mess it up a little then distribute it.
And it could also be that MS are holding off the release until the security pack and activesync issues are resolved.
Yea the Operators are real stupid, I mean there is ready device software why stick your own crap in there.
About the MSFP: On the dutch Pocket PC site www.pocketinfo.nl there is an offer to buy the KJAM plus a year sunscription including the push functionality. In small letters they write that for the real push functionality you have to wait for the MSFP to be released untill then the users are more then welcome to sync on schedule.
Anyhow I hope the MSFP is real close since this offer has just appeared now so I guess they know more then we do.
actually i'm thinking that the new ROMs are o their way because MS has done their homework (you cannot release only half of the package) so it's up to the HTC to finish the ROM then up to the carriers to provide it to us.
I'm afraid MS HAS done half the job, again.
MSFP is RTM as of the 4th Nov, according to my contact.
Question is, how long will it take the likes of Orange to incorporate it? Blummin long time I reckon.
F.
Is there anyone with an MSDN license ?? I beleive you could get it there
Nope, it's not on MSDN Sub Downloads.
It's got to be integrated with the providers' software (ROMs) so they only supply it to the providers. With the exception of those who were on the Windows Mobile Beta program, but if you stuck a copy of (I thinkk it's called Crossbow, the next version) on your machine most features wouldn't work I suspect!
We're at the mercy of buttholes like Orange.
F.
Well that sounds really disturbing. what if I want to deploy the feature enterprise wide. I mean I am myself an ICT Manager but our company is too small to pull a muscle but large multinationals are then also at the mercy of the operators or shall I say buttholes?
Aye, it seems that way.
Problem is, I can't get any decent info from MS about it, and Orange say that there's nobody to ask there - even the data guys, who apparently "have access to almost every system in the company", are not told about ROM updates until they're on the website!
We'll have to wait and see. As I say, I believe the MSFP went RTM last week so it might not be tooo long...
For the record, I'm an Exchange consultant and so have a vested interest in this damn push-email thing.
F.
Bad news guys ... i hope that i'm wrong.
From the Microsoft Launch of VS2005 today in Milano seems that the new features will be available only from 2006 , meaning that we can only hope for ROM updates without the security and exchange improvements.ùù
As an additional info ... the italian Jasjar is real, brought by TIM. It has the italian ROM version.
We are all waiting for this ROM for the JASJAR & belive me I am checking the site of imate three times daily!

O2 Software Update coming ?

Anyone know anything about the O2 software/firmware update for the Orbit, what it might contain and prospective date ?
Any wild speculation will do
how do you know that there is a new firmware coming out?
Will O2 release a firmware or is it being made by someone?
I have written a email to o2 UK and o2 germany.
Their answer (o2 UK):
" ... Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately we don’t currently have any timescales for the Xda Orbit with regards the ROM, we are usually informed approximately 1 month prior to the release of a new ROM update however we have no information as yet. I can only apologise for this and suggest you periodically view our website at www.o2.co.uk/xda for further information related to this, as this website will hold the ROM once it is available...."
found this today:

O2 update
I think you'll find that's for the prophet!!
I've just come off the phone to O2 in the UK (Business support), and the told me:
They are hoping to get the WM6 update out in early summer - June/July.
BUT.....
This will be for new devices only, so you may need to buy a new handset - (urrently) They may issue a update, but they might also make us pay for it.
So, come on guys - get hitting the O2 XDA support site, and request the WM6 update!
Well, if they will issue an update, it shouldn't take long for it be shared on the net
German Version Available
Looks like the german release is available - does anyone know if we are any closer to seeing an english version.
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/6380.html
This is my reply from O2 regarding this, I can also raise the request with their customer relations department as well if required - I'm currently battling to get them to reduce their data pricing and having some success but thats another issue.

Good afternoon Gavin,
Thank you for your email.
We are currently in the process of testing the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade
on the Xda Orbit. We currently have an extensive testing process that
is in process to ensure the Windows Mobile 6 works without any major
flaw, this is to also ensure the customer experience is far better.
Unfortunately as yet we do not have any timescales for the release
however I shall keep details of your email address and as soon as this
is made available I shall notify you.
If you have any further problems, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind Regards

Sounds like good news?
I received this response from O2 UK Yesterday.
Thank you for your email.
We are currently working on releasing a new ROM update for the Xda Orbit, this will include Windows Mobile 6 rather than Windows Mobile 5 which the device is setup to use at the moment, this is in testing stages and as yet we are unaware of when this will be made available.
Unfortunately we do not currently have any timescales for the release of Windows Mobile 6 as stated this is currently going through testing and until the testing has been done to a satisfactory outcome we shall not know when the release will be available.
If you have any further problems, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Bull. The phrasing isn't that of O2 customer services.
Hi,
I installed the WM6 ROM, which is provided by O2 Germany. I encountered no problems during the installation and Tomtom is working without any further registration. Now I will install my standard software like spb shell, ozi-explorer and gps-dash. Til now, WM6 seems to be a step ahead .
Kind regards,
hqqh
Has anyone successfully put the O2 german rom onto the Orbit shipped by O2 Uk?
Good/Bad/Wait for the UK release?

Can you select English menus or is the phone now only in German?
Bepe had made a World Wide English WM6 ROM from the origional German ROM that has been released. I have successfully flashed this ROM onto my CID LOCKED UK XDA Orbit thanks to Prof's USPL tool.
Look in the Artemis Windows Mobile 6 forum. There are loads of threads on it in there.
I sent a mail to O2 Support about a query I had and also asked avout the ROM Upgrade !!! Here's the reply I got yesterday...
Good afternoon,
Thank you for your email.
We do not currently have a ROM that is available to download for the Xda Orbit and Blackberry will not work with the Xda Orbit as yet until a release of Blackberry software is made available (Please note: We are not aware if or when Blackberry software will be released for the Xda Orbit).
In regards WM6 we are currently in the process of testing this version on the Xda Orbit and until we have completed all testing we will not be making it available to our customers, as yet we have no exact timescales however we are expecting the release to be made available before the end of summer.
If you have any further problems, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Official WM6 upgrade for TyTn is confirmed

The official HTC forum in Norway has confirmed that HTC will release an WM6 update for TyTn.
http://smartmobil.no/Article639.phtml
Sorry if this information is outdated
Its also on Qtek's swedish site that theres 5 HTC phones definitly getitng the official upgrade.. http://www.qtek.se/sweden/nyheter/senaste_nytt.aspx
I'm sure it has already been covered someplace else on the forums already mind.
Yea, i think it have been posted earlier today/this week. Says late summer, so im thinking july, august
well, this is great news.
let's hope the official update will have all problems fixed etc.
Cingular announced this a few weeks ago. Actually they confirmed WM6 for the 8525, blackjack AND treo 750. No release dates though, but engadget reported that the Blackjack update is probably going to be released the earliest.
official WM6
Hi
Its true that TyTn gone have an official WM6. But I’m not sure that they can delivery it in June or July because TyTn Europe couldn’t jet delivery a new Swedish MW5 Rom witch been known since months on xda-developers forum it was suppose to delivery in January 07. so I satisfying so long with current WM6 such as Black, LVSW etc.
regards
Yes, and the question is: witch one will be better? Or better suiteable...
I believe that the heroes here (we all are) investigated so much in this stuff that I will make this statement: HTC learn from XDA or you lose!!! Probably they've read all our treads and learnd from it.
Question: What do you think concerning this matter?
I think Cingular/HTC waits for the developers here to solve all the problems then they just copy and release what was done here Saves them time and money developing their own stuff. lol

hahaha, lol, man, its cool.
They will read your post and theirs faces will be red.
Its true though... even if an offical release becomes available for my Vario II, I'm not totally sure that I would upgrade giving tha I'm so happy with my LVSW WM6 install
i have the same sentiments... the roms here are almost "made to order" with features that majority of us agree on. I really can't imagine upgrading to an official "operator" or "manufacturer" rom unless there's a big boo boo in the one's i've installed from here (which there have been none I might add).

I presonally prefer official ROMs over these user-made. WM6 roms I've tried do have more or less annoying bugs and unusefull software (xcept maybe for vanillas).
Original roms are (or at least should be) guaranteed to work on phones they have been made for.

Yes, advanced users here provide very much, but not that many actually developes the OS itself. They just add tweaks
and some freeware programs in it.
Oh and believe me, there are more gurus out there as well. This is just a forum with few experts and I doubt they
do this for a living, more like a hobby.
For free? How many times you have paid for a rom that operator releases?
And WM6 for free? I'd say that's piracy. You do pay for at least to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista?
When you buy a new computer that comes with an OS, you can't assume that you are entitled for a free upgrade
to OS when ever one is released.
I find the best thing this forum has to offer is free problem solving when it comes to bricking your device when
you either don't have a clue what you are doing or then something goes wrong while flashing your phone.
Hats off for the expert for that.

I wonder if this is the reason the upgrade that was announced for Q1 still hasn't been released?

It is quite different thing for several reasons:
1. You can't go and buy an OS for a PocketPC or smartphone. Moreover, there is no and can't be a market for OSes for such devices: any build is device dependent. Show me that shop, and I'll buy Symbian or Linux for my TyTN!
2. When you buy a motherboard, you expect free BIOS update, especially if the original is buggy. For embedded devices (STB, modem, router, MP3 player etc) you do expect free firmware update, especially if the original one is buggy. No matter that the firmware is based on a Linux or even no OS. Windows Mobile is just a part of the firmware for our devices.
And, because Windows Mobile is always buggy, we do expect free updates!
Yes, you get free updates for BIOS as you do get for your phone. They are called ROM updates, which include fixes for radio, bootloader, OS fixes and stuff, but NOT a new OS.
As I see it, when a new OS has been released, it will be sold as a part of a new phone (OEM). As you can't purchase OEM versions you are stuck with the one you currently own, but you still do get free updates.
I would find it quite strange if you would be supported with brand new OS for no additional cost, since I believe the operators/manufacturers sure has to pay license fees for
new OS's.

Don't be so restricted, look wider!
Manufacturers get money from selling their devices. If they won't update the OS on just released models (and TyTN is far from EOL), they loose sales. Then they can give the same ROM to us, old owners, for no cost for them.
Then, they just announced new models on almost the same hardware. They have to use the new OS on them, so they have to make the new ROM for them. But if they won't update our ROMs with the new OS, they'd have to continue supporting two different lines of ROMs, instead of one with small very specific changes. It's additional cost. Or, drop support for recent devices, means loose their face and then sales of new devices.
Believe me, it's not free, and not for no cost from us. We paid enough to let them support us until EOL, and they earn enough from such upgrades.
Just like owners of other devices paid for all the firmware updates, we paid for our updates. The early we purchased the more we paid, BTW. An update with the new OS for recent devices for HTC is cheaper than no updates or updates with old OS. Even if the update would be less stable/useful than WM5 AKU3.5!

If Microsoft provides the upgrade to the OEM for free (which it looks like they are doing for WM6) and the OEM provides the upgrade to current owners for free (which it looks like they will do when they eventually do it), then it is not piracy.
Keep in mind that Microsoft really makes its money on its core products (currently Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange 2007). They REALLY want users (especially enterprise users) to upgrade to those new products. If you have a Windows Mobile device, you need WM6 on those devices to take full advantage of the new features in the core products, so why wouldn't they give it away? It will pay for itself twice or three times over. Besides, as other users have pointed out, WM6 is really just a bug fix maintenance release for WM5.0!

WM6.5 official upgrade

Hi,
I thought I read somewhere HTC would release this upgrade for the tp2 today? Does anyone know if this is the case, and where to get it? I could not find anything on HTC's site re WM6.5.
Thanks.
Noone knows a thing. Everyone expects the release to be tomorrow. But since some providers are already releasing it today, who knows?
There isn't any hard evidence to say when it's going to come out.
This is on Microsoft's site, hope it makes things clearer

This clarify some things...
I asked htc tech support the 6.5 question. They responded in minutes. That's a response speed I certainly did not expect! Very good, though I'm sure they are fed up answering the same question...
They've advised they are currently dealing with the license packges from microsoft (whatever that means), but no release date was mentioned. Doesn't sound far away though.
Hi,
I have downloaded on HTC Support site an update for my TP2 from Orange.
The file is named RUU_Rhodium_Orange_FR-B2B_1.19.73.5_Radio_Rhodium_3.45.25.14_Signed_Ship.exe dating October 1st 2009....
Can anyone tell me if it's WM 6.5 ? Or just an update of my 1.19.73.3 (51489) WM6.1 ?
Thanks
EDIT : Stupid question after reading at Microsoft that the WM 6.5 availability date is not yet known....
Sorry
The release date for TP2 is Thursday this week.

Not possible. I know the Sales Representative for WM Norway. He told me. I have known the release dates for a quite long time now.
This is a message on HTC's website:
If you have a phone from Orange or another provider though HTC won't be providing the update (not too sure I have much faith in Orange to provide an update).

Availability
The HTC Touch2, Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 are available through selected operators across Europe now and will be rolling out to other regions in the coming months. The new HTC HD2 will be available soon with selected operators across Europe, before rolling out to other regions.
Notes to Editors
Customers with an original HTC Touch Diamond2 or Touch Pro2 will be able to update their phone via a new ROM which will be available from HTC’s website in the coming weeks at www.htc.com.

I just received it via email.
/\oops the person above me got it too. /\
Did anyone else wake up this morning to a 6.5 update?
No really, I woke this morning and slapped my TP2 to shut off my alarm to be alarmed myself, I had a Windows Update telling me to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5. I pretty much crapped myself at that point, it started off and gave my the orange installation screen, than after a minute or two it gave me an installation failed message.
After that I frantically tried running Windows Update but the connection timed out continuously. Just wondering if I am the only to receive this?
If this happens tomorrow I promise pictures, but was this an isolated incident? Or did everyone else get this via Microsoft?
As much as I want 6.5, I'm in no rush, the internet is on fire with "6.5 sucks" stories. I personally just want TouchFlo3D 2.5, that twitter integration is calling my name.
/firstpost
HTC sure plays spoil sport - with expectations.
(i know they never told they will release the update on 6th, but when a date was announced by microsoft the two companies should have worked together to release the updates for every phone in their list. This is so not good for their PR).
I really dont see how microsoft expects to win the mobile phone war. By the time they come out with WinMO 7, they will again be miles behind, if all they could manage was a shoddy job at winmo 6.5 which apparently has nothing great to talk about - except IE - and who uses it anyway!)
I stuck to winmo all these years, as 5 years ago it was a good business phone and it also supported bberry.
This year i finally split and bought a bberry as there was no update for TP2 coming for months. - again, its a function of marketing - keep customers happy. I know there has never been a promise by htc on integrating bberry software on winmo, yet, after a point, people start expecting.
Somehow these giants just dont get it when it comes to customer service and marketing. Microsoft has definitely lost a customer the day i split and bought a second phone which is a pure bberry. The next upgrade, i will skip winmo entirely and look at the offerings from android and webos...
live long and prosper microsoft - if u can!....
T-Mobile Germany released the update today:
http://www.t-mobile.de/shop/handy/0,4855,2963-_16608-0-8949;CNC-4,00.html
Yes, i've found it too. After uownloading and unpacking i got a file named "RUU_Rhodium_S_TMO_DE_1.85.111.1_Radio_Rhodium_4.49.25.05_Signed_Ship.exe". With 7zip i've seen, the date of the NBH is 17th of September, don't know which version they used.
But i don't want to have this (i guess) buggy and extremly branded system on my device. I'll wait for an unbranded HTC-release or one from O2(DE), these are nearly unchanged too.

Well yeah at the end of August we will see the first new phones, but Microsoft always said that consumers will get Mango in the fall.

"fall" is only two months away, as of tomorrow. Just to keep things in perspective.
It seems reasonable to expect the testing and certification by phone manufacturers and carriers to take at least two months, which would be consistent with all of the timelines that have been "leaked" over the past few months. Many rumors indicated that Mango would RTM in July (which it has), and that new Mango-equipped hardware would begin to hit retailers by late August/early September (which also appears to be accurate - remember, no one ever said they would be available worldwide at that time).
Add in another month to complete manufacturer/carrier testing for existing devices, and deal with the logistical issues around preparing for the distribution, and people on reasonable carriers could easily start seeing the update on their phones in early October. People on AT&T will probably see it by June of next year.
Already reported by Microsoft themselves that Windows Phone 7 Mango has not RTM'd yet. Which is good IMO, because I'd rather them work on it as much as possible.

I'm going to hope (probably in vane) that the RTM is leaked onto the internets somehow. I've had minimal dramas with the mango beta, so I'd like to get onboard with the RTM ASAP.

Well, it looks like you got more time. Only 4 days worth, but still...
Seriously, though, It seems obvious now that the code was already frozen when the original report "leaked", but that the hand-off to handset makers and operators was not complete. Now it is.
So, we are still on track (barring ridiculous manufacturer/carrier delays) to see people actually receive the update by late September/early October. And, if Nokia does have hardware ready to go (which seems evident), we may see Mango-equipped new phone models very quickly.
kinda news ?
i was expecting more today, like a NEW mango finalized device displayed somewhere..
is this only a rtm announcement ?
anyone know if there will be a 2 stage release to end users like nodo had to make carriers actually push updates to phones ?
...waiting for some hard news...
I'm hoping that I'll connect to Zune soon and see that an update is available. I'd like full Twitter integration in my Mango.

I'm not sure what you're asking. All WP7 updates go through a certification process with both handset manufacturers and mobile operators. But neither of those entities "push" the updates to phones. Update delivery only happens through Microsoft (i.e., Zune).
So, what is happening now is that the other companies involved have received their copies of Mango for final testing and sign-off. They had likely already received earlier builds, so they could begin development of new features and/or apps (thanks to all of the new capabilities they might want to capitalize on), but now the clock is ticking on them. They complete the sign-off, send back to Microsoft any modifications they have made specific to their hardware or mobile service, and then Microsoft combines those into various bundles that ultimately get delivered to our phones.
The one exception to that rule is unbranded phones, which will probably receive the update before carrier-branded ones, since there is only one level of sign-off needed before the update can be made available.
The big question is whether Microsoft will be able to apply more pressure to carriers (especially AT&T) to sign-off in a timely manner. On this issue, let's just say that I have my doubts.
Out of curiosity, did we ever get a notice of the specific date that NoDo went RTM? I don't recall seeing one. Maybe the fact that Microsoft is being so vocal this time around is part of their plan to "motivate" carriers.
This is fantastic. Like others Im hoping someone leaks the latest build so XDA members can get their fingers dirty.

i don't know how to be more clear with my question.
i can't see att caring about what microsoft says about signing off. they aren't exactly pushing wp products, and could care less about an update that will -not- sell another contract/phone to existing customers. an iphone hardware update on the other hand, oh yes yes yes, they love that stuff.
i did see a couple of blog posts (via my android news aggregator) stating that there would be a mango hardware unveil today, along with the rtm statement. apparently, bloggers jumped the gun, again.
the rtm statement is really a non-news worthy event. "we released something to someone, so sometime soon you might have a something for your phone. maybe." really that's all it is.
now HARDWARE... that's something i can understand there being threads and news about. say, searay or whatever the supposed new SHIPPING device is, that's news.
anyway, back to my jonesing for new tech... maybe endgadget or someone has some cool news... rss update time

Pushing products in a store and pushing updates to existing phones have nothing to do with each other. So I still don't understand your original question about carriers pushing the update to our phones. They don't push the update, Microsoft does.
