Damaged O2 XDA IIs in UK - advice ? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I got caught in that major downpour on saturday and my BA and Globalsat BT-338 GPS unit got soaked.
I dried them off in the car and tried the BA. It powered on, and on the blue imate screen (I flashed it with a PDA2K image) I saw a very brief bit of corruption on the screen. It got into windows then rebooted.
I got it home, dried some more, tried again. Dead as a doornail.
Put it in the cradle, the red "break call" button was dimly flashing. Not an even flash, a bzzt bzzt "I am shorting" kind of flash.
I immediately pulled it out of the cradle and left it to dry more overnight.
Today I tried it out of the cradle, still dead. Gingerly put it in cradle, the top right light went red (low battery I think this means) but no flashing break light so I left it and it went orange (indicating normal charging) after a while. I powered it on and it works. I still get the same brief bit of corruption just after the serial / rom ID screen on bootup.
It would not sync howver. I tried my lil-sync travel sync lead and that synced. I then had the idea of pulling the power plug out of the back of the cradle and letting it reset. It now syncs in the cradle.
All seemed good I thought. But I soon realised that the power button doesn't work. I cannot turn off the screen. If I hold the button down it toggles the backlight, so the button itself isn't broken, but I don't know what is...
I suppose I will have to call O2 and they will tell me to send it to a repair centre, but that will probably a) take ages and b) possibly cost loads.
I was thinking of taking it to a repair shop but I doubted they would know how to fix a BA. Also they may try to rip me off.
Any suggestions ?
Also if you know the best way of going about getting my globalsat BT-338 GPS repaired also that would be great. When I plug it in to charge the orange charging light flashes briefly but then nothing.

worst come to worst, install something like handymenu and make a quick action link for turn off, then assign that quicklink to one of the buttons to turn it off.
not sure that will work to turn it on though - unless you've worked out another way to do that?

When something gets wer, always take the battery straight out and thouroughly dry the inside with a hairdryer before trying to turn it on again. Probably not much help to you now though
I bet 02 will fix it for about £50.

I don't have a hair dryer - you need hair to make it worth having one and I haven't had any hair in years !
I will give O2 a call and see what they say.

I have a XDA2s for parts
Hallo
If you are interested i have O2 xda2s with brocen screen for parts exchange feel fre to contact me
07746555729

Take it to O2 just tell them it doesnt work and you dont know whats happened to it... play it dumb... always works for me. they replaced my entire screen with a brand new one for nothing and it only took under a week. It was so obviouse i had dropped it since ther was a clear dent at the top of the BA. only thing is that if they want to charge you for repair and you decide not to go ahead they will charge you to post it back to you.

exactly what i did uplift
posted it in today, fingers crossed...
I think I am defo gonna get insurance if I get it working again, too much worry...

well I sent it in to the official repairers (Anovo) and they sent it back "Fixed under warranty"
Except that it was NOT fixed, it was displaying the exact same fault, which is SO easy to replicate, how the hell can they call it "Fixed" ???
So I call up O2 cust serv and tell them. They asked me to fax in receipt from repairers which I did and they said they would be sending me a brand new handset
Woohoo !

Well i was happy with o2 till i noticed a ****ING crack on the bottom left hand side of the screen. so i went back a week later cos i was working and didnt have time.
Told them that it was sent back to me like that and they basicaly said piss off.... said they couldnt do anything about it that i could have broken it anytime myself... fair enough. So now i have an xda with a cracked screen and anywhere down in the left corner i have to touch about 6mm to the left of
any button to press on it.
So pressing the New button is impossible.
I cant belive how they didnt even question about how the screen stopped working the first time, so why the hell cant they replace it again!?
Im proper pissed off
Anyone know anybody that has a dead xda with a working screen id gladly pay good money for it!

annoying, but I would imagine the screen is quite easily replaceable.
It's gonna cost, but better than being left with a paperweight...

You guys are not gonna believe this...
So O2 send the new handset.
When I got it I decided to use my old battery until the new one had charged.
Guess what... same problem !!
IT WASNT THE PHONE IT WAS THE BATTERY !!!
So, if your XDA fails to go into standby mode when you hit the power button - don't suspect the phone, suspect the battery !

if u do, make sure u dont get it wet, cos o22 insurance wont cover water damage.

I can't use O2 insurance anyway, you can only insure with 02 within something like 14 days of purchase.

Got same crack but in the right-hand bottom...
I am using my device in landscape mode while waiting for a reasonably priced spare part donor. Rotating the screen usually helps.

repair my xda 2s

hi
i have the xda2s, that has a fault, when the battery is taken out it will not switch on for a good few hours. the power button works fine as i can turn the backlight off fine when on. i have sent the phone off to the xda repair center, but they nust have overlooked it, and sent it back with the same fault. ive been trying to get through to o2 about getting the phone replaced, as i dont want to wait the week and a half for xda repair center to fix the phone. but o2 customer services dont whant to be of any help since i dont have an o2 sim contract. i dont see why i need one, as its there phone and its faulty and still in warrenty. im leaving on a buisness trip in the next week and will be out of the country for quiet some time. so i havent realy got time to sending letters to get things sorted.
any help would be appreciated
thanks
Ariel
could be some really simple. Does a red light come on (top left) when you try and charge the unit. if so i had the same problem. i was charging the unit on a slight angle (so much for ergonomic desks) must have given it a bad connection. I'm sure you have already tried this but when i happens take the battery out for a min then give it a go.
your right about the red light, ive just placed an order fot the xda 2s cradle,do you think that would solve the problem
when i take the battery out it takes a good few hours to switch back on, is the phone now broken at the bottom, or is it just simply a case of not useing the usb cable charger again, would that solve the problem.
i had a suspecion that it could be the charger because my xda 2s with a broken screen developed the same recently aswell.
i realy hope this isnt permanent and if it is, hope its covered under warrenty
thanks for your help

ok looks like te problem was just the clip. its cracked on the side, so that not all the clip moves when you lock the battery in place. as the clip also has the power of turning the phone off, most probebly to stop a short circuit, it seems that the half that dosent move is stuck in the off postition. this can move by applying a little presure. does anyone know a way of fixing the clip or possibley getting a new one from somewere. or could it be covered under warrenty, can you think of an excuse were it could be.
thanks for all your help

Phone freezes up when idle

If I leave my phone on and come back to in about an hour it becomes unresponsive. The screen is won't come on, usb won't work and the power button doesn't work as well, but the lights still flash. All I can do is take the battery out and turn it on again.
At first i thought the keypad must have been getting disabled after a certain amount of time for some reason, but since the usb the connection alos dies when it's idle it must be something else.
I've been having this problem for awhile now. It first it started every once and awhile, but now it's getting to the point that I have to reset it every hour or so.
I just upgraded my ROM to Kavana 080408, but I've had this problem running the T-mobile WM6 ROM as well, therefore I'm guessing it's a hardware issue?
Any thoughts, questions, or help is greatly appriciated!
call tmobile and ask them to send you a new phone... its hardware issues...
Thank you. Err.. the only thing I haven't mentioned (for lack of mistaking the problem) is that just 3 days ago I dropped my phone outside and it rained the next morning. When I recovered the phone it was soaked.. I let it dry out and it worked again.
I think the incedent had to have been irrelevant, because I have been having this problem for about 8 months regaurdless, just not as severe.
Would T-mobile be able to know it got wet at some point and not exchange it because they'd assume the problem was due to water damage?
Well if you look under the battery to the right where the sim card goes, there is a litmus paper that turns purple/pink when wet and its white originally. I would just remove the paper if it is purple/pink and try to cut and glue a white piece of paper the same size. And then I would call them and tell them.
Glue and fish strips?
Thanks, but hmm.. how exact should this be? I was thinking about going to the fish store and buying some test strips and using those. Then i was thinking about thinning out some glue and using that to stick it. Does this sound good? I'll post how it goes.
Dash Arrived then Died
I just got my dash about two weeks ago. Before I could start finding my way around, it began acting strangely. It would not respond and sometimes suddenly cut off on it's on. Then it got to the point where it would not turn on right away. I would have to play with it (battery and SIM removal) and then it might turn on. I thought I was using the power button incorrectly.
Finally, the dash would not turn on at all. Since it was new and insured I requested a replacement. T-Mobile insisted that I test it with a alternate battery (I had a charger stand + battery on order but it had not arrived yet.) Since it would still not turn on via USB or power adapter (no charging lights either) I was certain it was not the battery. After arguing with a T-Mobile Rep and Supervisor I finally decided to lie (er um exaggerate) and tell them I had tested an alternate battery.
Before the new phone arrived the charger and spare battery arrived. I tried both batteries in the new phone with no problems.
You may want to try and get a new phone but the T-Mo rep definitely asked me the color of the paper strip inside the battery housing. My rep told me that it would change color if the LCD was damaged or cracked but I checked another phone (Samsung T409 and Motorola V188) and based on the locations of the strips I would assume it's a water damage test strip.
You may also want to see it you can remove a strip from an older phone.
Good luck!

Screen shuts off when slid up!

So... all of a sudden, everytime i slide the screen up, it shuts the screen off. I slide it back, hit the power button a few times, then it turns back on?

Is my screen busted?
Power off your phone, remove the battery and then put it back in, making sure it fits in there snuggly.
That has happened to me, and removing/replacing the battery fixed it.
Yes, as Amy noted this behavior is often attributed to the battery not sitting exactly right in the compartment. Sometimes just popping it out and back in is enough, but some people have reported needeing to slip a small piece of paper or something similar under the battery cover as well to help keep it snug. (It seems that the sliding motion can be enough to shake the battery off the contacts if it's not secure enough).
Let us know if that clears it up
okay. what the deuce.
my tp2 just literally started doing the same.
earlier today it was perfectly fine.
but now.
i slide out the keyboard and the screen goes blank.
i tried the remove battery and restart.
didn't help.
i tried the paper between battery and cover.
didn't help either.
the screen only goes blank when completely slid out.
if i hold it open just before completely open the screen is still on.
any suggestions?
thanks.
Yea, none of those things worked. However, keeping the battery snug helped with the issue of not hearing anything through the handset.
It honestly sounds to me like both of you are dealing with a loose connection between the screen and the motherboard somewhere, either power or video feed, can't say for sure which. Unless you're willing to disassemble your rhodium (which isn't impossible, just complex), it sounds like it's time to send it to a service center (for AT&T) or to HTC, since that would be a warranty repair.
I hope that this is just freak coincidence that both of you had this happen just now, and not a sign that we're all at risk of having the same issue eventually
How long have each of you had your phones?
EDIT: One more question for you guys...whatever is on the display on your screen rotates into landscape before the display shuts off right?

i have own the phone for about three weeks...
though. bought it used from a friend who had it for four months.
but my friend bought it used from somebody too...
aka. not sure how long it has been used.
the display is rotated. and stays on as long as the right side is held.
before the 'tilt piece' is revealed. as soon as it is. the screen goes blank.
and i believe it would be the video feed...
i can still type with the keyboard. just can't see what i am typing.
unless i hold the screen from sliding completely out on the right.
and about the warranty...
would i have a warranty with htc still?
don't have proof of purchase.
just the phone and original box.
thanks.
My AT&T Tilt 2 has been exhibiting this behavior for some weeks now. It seems to be centered around the keyboard slide, but the behavior comes and goes. I found that slamming the phone on the desktop would bring it back to life for a little while, but then it would start to clap out again in a few days. What a pile.
Anyway, I have a fresh one from AT&T to swap out. Now all I have to do is get all my applications and stuff transferred over to the new phone before sending the craprod back to them.

Oh boy...yeah I didn't realize you'd gotten it third-hand. Well it has been less than a year since the Rhodium was released, so it's possible that HTC will still honor the 1-year manufacturer's warranty, but I can't guarantee it. My suggestion would be to just contact HTC America's service group (1-888-617-1113) and see what they say.
Best case: they agree to cover the repair
Worst case: an example of one of the risks you take when you buy something through "unofficial" channels
Yea luckily for me, I bought it second hand, but it was purchased from a retail store, meaning I got a warranty exchange. I just sent it back.
having same issue
im having same issue, when the phone is slid open, goes black, nothing gets it back on, the buttons light up, display dead
however, if i place it in stand by via power button in regular mode, then slide it open, it works, ive rattled and shook the phone, never goes back off, im typing this with it open and tilted....
any ideas?
prob leaving the htc community, samsung captivate, blackberry torch, or htc aria are my choices from at

Stupid me...

Hey guys!
i bought a DHD 1 month ago, i was pretty satisfied with it!
but one day the screen had "layers" of fat on it, so i wanted to clean it..
i used a normal house window cleaner on it.
sprayed it on the screen arround 30 CM away from the screen and i wiped it off
the screen was as good as new!
but one ouhr later i noticed some darker spots on the screen!
i didnt accually care.. i thought it would dry away .. but it didnt (the spots didnt spread either.)
but the next day i was listening to music, then i noticed that the volume keys didnt work (the volum + key is frozen) so the music was always turned on maximum.
so i think the cleansing fluid made my phone wet from inside... is it a way to fix this?
(ive already sendt it in to a workshop they refuse to fix it because its not in the warrnty)
How much had you actually paid for your DHD? And you seriously thought you would save a fortune by NOT buying mobile screen cleanser??? I salute your decision mate

er det ikke murlig å få kjøpt erstatningsdeler? (feks: skjerm OSV...)
There has been talk of putting your phone in a bag of rice to remove the moisture. Another would be using kittly litter but I'd go with the rice idea.

Sorry gotta post in English as it it's the rule. I do not know if you can buy parts of it (which you can i guess). But then the problem would be replacing it. I saw some advertisements about guys who fix mobiles on finn.no back sometime. So you might want to check there.
Btw, it has not passed a year since DHD was released and you say there is no warranty? That surprises me even more. If warranty is void because of the custom ROM, flash the original RUU and send it back in.
The best bet is to dry the phone out as much as possible, as suggested above. I would place it 10-15cm above a radiator, so that it gets plenty of heat, but not too much. Take all the covers off so that the heat can enter as much as possible.
Moisture is the first thing they look for, which obviously voids warranty. I did the above for an iPod that got wet in a downpour and stopped working - and they exchanged it for me . But this was only rainwater.
If the goo from the spray has stuck electronics components together, that will probably invalidate the guarantee - BUT at this point your best bet is to get someone qualified, who can actually clean recondition the phone, even if it costs you money. As it stands, your phone sounds worthless, so if it can be functional again, that is a necessary cost.
Imagine, you may see goo inside the phone that you know that you should remove, but how are you to know if any components are failing and need replacing? A tech service centre does this many times a day.
At least, they should give you an estimate, so you can decide whether to go ahead.
*****************UPDATE****************'
ok.. heres the thing..
sorry for the poor explenation.
i rapped the phone arround a dry towel and sat it uppon a radiator untill it reached arround 60 degrees Celsius.
im now able to turn on the phone, but because of the volume key fail, its only booting on Hboot and nothing else, and im not able to navigate unless i remove the battery cover cearfully and press the volume keys as hard as i can. (it would only mess up the phone over time)
i think (hope) its only a tiny error that can be fixed by replacing the buttons (if its possible
i'm sorry to hear it. it takes time to remove the moist inside the device. maybe you can do your way on drying the phone more frequenly ( make sure the phone is turn off ). i hope your DHD will become normal again.
I get annoying black box warning popup from my network service provider....
How to disable it??? See attached file

[HORRBLE!] Software breaks after physical fall!?

So I was shopping for pants today, but I forgot I had my Desire in my pocket (front right one, if you want to know).
So, my phone fell on the ground and the battery and the cover flew off.
I quickly bought my pants and rushed out to see the damage...
IT WAS HORRIBLE!
The thing didn't want to boot, all it did was flash the red and green LED...
I (somehow) managed to get into bootloader to see the damage...
That was ALSO HORRIBLE!
The recovery kept restarting (4EXT, the loading screen that says 'preparing boot') and all I could do was take out the battery...
Thank god, Fastboot worked, so as soon as I came home I started running the RUU (from fastboot)...
Again, HORRIBLE!
when the RUU said the phone was gonna reboot into bootloader, it DIDN'T - the LEDs just kept flashing!
So I pressed power+vol- and that did the trick, but after the RUU finished ... again, flashy LEDs...
So, is this a software or hardware issue, and how to fix it (other than going to a guy and pay him to do it, which I'll do anyway if you people (god, no!) don't know the answer...)
I think I'll go to Fastboot next and clear all storage...
EDIT: Held the power button for a few secs, and the HTC boot logo shows up...
EDIT2: THE BOOTANIMATION!!! FINALLY!!!
Still, I'd like to know what the issue was, since it seems like it'll work normally from here on...?
Seems like all I've damaged are the LEDs and the camera Flash (the camera says it's too cold to use flash...)
I'll heat up the battery and report again
P.S.
Sorry for the double post... My PC is laggy today...
EDIT: Can't boot into 4EXT, no matter what... I tried CWM and it worked fine, but 4EXT won't...
And just today, I bought a new SDcard so I'd have more space and speed so I could partition it...
EDIT2: Also, the battery doesn't want to fill up... The second I take the charger out, it shuts down... Looks like I'm in need of a new battery... (curse my pants' pockets for being so big!)
It won't be bad to disassemble your phone and see if some connector disconnected.
How do I do that...? Is there like a hardware manual somewhere...? Because I'll need to know what screwdrivers I have to buy (I'm all out anyways...)
Yeah, it's probably the connector, since I can hear something shaking when I shake the phone (or it's something broken... hope it's the first thing)
Otherwise, there's a little power button glitch when turning the thing on... The LEDs flash and I can only boot if I hold the vol- button (can't do anything, not even bootloader!)
P.S.
I was just waiting when you'd reply (oh, Great one!)
Youtube is a miracle...
You'll need TORX screewdriver (star shape 6 angles), a small one.
Took my phone apart, saw the drivers I need... Just gotta wait till morning so BauHaus opens up...
I saw the tut on how to replace the screen, so that will help... Other solutions WILL be YouTube, since I don't understand anything from those pictures (but the text part of the guide is great)
I found another glitch: The LEDs flash if charging even if the battery is 60 meters away... I don't believe that's a sign of a disconnected connector... Hope it is
EDIT: Installed SetCPU, and my battery has been at 0% for the last 12 hours (without charging)... And the phone works... It just won't turn on sometimes...
Picking up those screwdrivers at about 6 pm
Just one question:
Is it possible for a connector to break? And if so, if one is broken in my phone, is it possible to replace it...? (haven't gotten the screwdrivers yet...)
If not, do I have to replace the whole cable, whole motherboard or only the component of the connector...? Or even the whole phone...?
I just popped it open... Now what? I disconnected and connected every single connector, reassembled it and the LEDs still glitch... And the phone won't go beyond the boot logo...
Could it be the battery? I saw a new scratch today, could I've damaged the battery and that is what's wrong...?
EDIT: Disassembled it again, looking for anything unusual (note that I don't have a single clue about what I'm looking for...)
Looks like I'm leaving the Android phone world... for the next 4-6 years... :'( Good old Nokia, I'm glad I didn't throw you away...
And it appears I'm yet again talking to myself...
Anyways, I'm taking the phone to a check to a repair shop, so I'll know what's wrong...
EDIT: The guy in the shop said a check is free, so I'm just gonna chill and play Minecraft for the next few days until he calls
Meh... The guy at the store checked it (FINALLY!) and he said the motherboard was dead...
And that costs 200€ to repair...
Anyways, I went to another shop and got me an Xperia S...
Goodbye, developer phone
wow 200 for mobo, u could get a good second hand desire that aint pvt1 for 100 lol. ah well hope u get better luck with ur new phone
Sent from my HTC Desire
I bought my Desire a few months ago, in June, for 120€ (PVT3). It was used, but it was the only used Desire in town... (seriously, I was the only person with a HTC Desire in my town (with 200k people!))
Ah well...
Guess I'll be the only owner of a Xperia S in 4 years
