Hi all
I've been using a pda for the past four years, currently use HP IPAQ 5550 with bluetooth and wifi etc. Separately I've got a Orange 3G phone. I am tempted to go for the Blue Angel with the keyboard, sold in the UK on O2 and T-Mobile, so that I've got a connected device, without having to apir the phone with the pda.
I understand the devices are the same, so is O2 any better than T-Mobile in terms of mobile data, gprs, etc? Or in terms of support? Restrictionjs re internet, off- walled garden browsing? Or in terms of upgrading to WM2005? I know that T-Mobile will eventually offer affordable data bunddles under the web'n'walk concept (in september), which may attract me to TMob.
Also, does any of the network prevent you from downloading additional softwares, such as avantgo, pocket informant, etc? I read that the sim lock -on orange pda devices?- prevented downloads of softwares by so-called non-approved third parties.
Is there anything I should know before choosing one or the other networks?
Thanks for your help.
there isnt much difference within the different providers of a blue angel. they are the same apart from there networks minor tweeks, software etc. the o2 rom is****, i not sure about the orange or t-mobile one tho....
Go with whoever is cheapest
Just buy whoever is cheapest overall for you. Coverage across the UK is roughly the same (ie whoever you get it will work everywhere *but* your house ) and the phones are the same too. T-Mobile doesn't install a lot of crap, but I highly recommend upgrading the ROM anyway (although it takes a while to get your head around it, if you're as retarded as me). If it goes to hell you can put the old ROM back again.
I *have* read bad things about O2 on these boards; I got hit with the noise problem (have a search for it), but after my 7 days courier return (still in my 28 days store return). I phoned them up, told them what was wrong and that the nearest T-Mobile store was 50 miles away, and they dispatched a courier anyway. O2 told the guy who had the same problem as me that he dropped it and charged him 150+ quid to get it fixed. That's a load of rubbish, and I bet they know it too.
All mobile phone operators are greedy, but only some of them are charlatans as well.
T-Mobile will also give you the MDA III for 80 quid if you sign up for 18 months at 30 quid a month (you can drop the price plan down afterwards if you like). Last I saw, O2 and Orange wanted 250 per handset.
Personally, I prefer Orange because at least you can talk to a real human being easily. T-Mobile make it difficult, but I'd rather save £170

Going to get the O2 XDA 2i tomorrow morning at O2 shop....hopefully can get it at £60 with £35 12 months contract. The cheapest I saw on internet is £69.90 with £35 12 months contract.
Will anyone of you feeling regret after you bought the XDA 2i?
The XDA IIi appears to be a better specced machine all round; with less chance of a keyboard to get loose...
If I'd known of that deal (I bought my phone online, but the O2 store didn't work and the other dealers like Carphone Warehouse didn't stock it), I would have gone with that
Chris
Thanks
Lewisham and Joey
Thanks a lot.
Is there an application lock on any of these devices? I guess all of them are sim-locked anyway...
Cheers
The SIM lock can be removed with an application on these forums, so that also answers no to app lock

Hi, been lurking for some time now and about to buy one of these units.... quick question though - how long did you have to wait before you where allowed to drop your contract down ?

Ok...so which one again ?
So let's say...an enterprising individual happened to acquire both an
Orange SPV M2000
AND AN
O2 XDA IIs
both in identical condition ( New ), which one would you recommend this individual keep, and which one should he sell. An inquiring individual would like to know.

It's the same phone.
Whoever is cheapest.
If both cheapest; Orange has better customer service.

Lewisham - did you see my question above.... I'm wondering if know of a get out clause that dont - ie take a 18mth high contract and your allowed to move down 6mths later ...

No, you can't do that. Your contract is fixed length. All you can change is the price plan you pay.
At least, I don't think you can. I might well ask them tomorrow.

I was speaking from the stand point that I ALREADY have both of them, new, and I can only keep both. They're NOT under contract. Which in people's opinion makes the better "keeper".

Yeah, you can drop to say a 15 quid a month price plan, but AFAIK, the length cannot be changed, because of the way they calculate the subsidy of the phone. But I will try tomorrow.

Well they are the same phone aren't they? It's like saying I have a Sony Ericsson P900 from Orange, and a Sony Ericsson P900 from O2. Which do I keep? The one you haven't beat up the most? The one that looks prettiest after they put the operator badge on it?

Not really, but I hear what you're saying. I wasn't thinking of "stylistics". Apparently their construction isn't all the same, the quality control in building them apparently hasn't been the same, and the software packages built-in, certainly aren't the same. I was talking about all those in the process of deciding. Not just because one is black and other is bronze-ish silver.
The build construction is the same; the hardware is identical, all that changes is the software preloaded.
But I would highly recommend installing 1.40, so the software is going to become whatever ROM you put on it, so it really does end up coming down to the hardware, and all that changes is the aesthetics.
Keep them both, and run them for a little bit. See if either develops the whistling screen.

Hi All, New member and new to PDA's....
I have just order my T-Mobile MDA III on an 18mth contract with 100 txt for £33/mth - 1/2 price line rental for 6mths?? They said that if I do not change tariff or upgrade, the 1/2 price line would be for life! after 18mths is complete.
They are out of stock at the minute, so will be waiting with bated breath!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I had a quick scan of the forums and didn't find the same question.
Basically, I'm thinking of buying an O2 XDA IIs, but I'm planning to use it more for the PDA functions than the phone functions. I've also heard that it's phone reception is poor(ish) so I was wondering if anyone knows if the XDA IIs runs without a sim card in it.
Thanks!
It does indeed
Fantastic!
Gotta dig deep now for the £199!
Thanks wilesd
What a concept, buy a phone to use as a PDA, Gee I just wish I could use me phone which is a PDA as a phone with out the Swiesche sidh crak grusnh and I dont even have a BT headset!
Well I figured that rather than buying an HP iPAQ with Wi-Fi that would cost anywhere between £300-400, I could extend my O2 contract and get an XDA, but use it only as a PDA. I would have to continue using my current mobile phone, but since it works well, I don't have any problem with that.

If your gonna extend your contract with O2 then tell 'em you'll leave unless they can do something decent on the price. I got my XDA IIs off them for £99 by doing just that
Really? I was considering using the 'leave O2' card, but I've heard that it doesn't always work, something about them reaching their quota for the week or something.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, going to try phone them up tomorrow and try for the £99 price tag!
Think it depends who you get on the phone and like you say their "quota".
I genuinely got my XDAIIs for free by threatening to leave! only a £25 a month contract as well
I told them Orange had offered me an MPV2000 for £130 (fib) and they offfered to match it, I then said I would speak to Orange and let O2 know what they said.
Left it ten minutes, rang O2 back and said Orange were gong to do it for free, couldn't believe it when O2 said they would still match it!!
Turned up 2 days later.
Think I'm the only person in the world who likes O2 customer services!
Wow. Thats one sweet deal! Well, I'm going to try and get a good deal off them tomorrow. The MPV2000 isn't on offer at Orange anymore so I think I'll try quoting the P910i or something...
Thanks for the advice! Should be a fun call
Heres to hoping for a free XDA IIs!
loads of places are offering SPV M2000 free on orange - but you pay with a higher cost contract.
The cheapest Ive seen is £40 per month.
The new Talk 600 premium or something contract costs £55 per month, but only lasts 9 months. You can usually go down to £15 after 6 months.
try fones4free.com or mobileshop.com for free M2000's

Damn, it didn't work! Probably didn't help having the world's most bored man at the other end of the line. Despite saying I could get a better deal at Orange, they didn't budge on the XDA IIs price tag of £199...I think the fact that i'm on a £19 a month contract didn't help, but maybe I need to get a chirpy, upbeat person at 02 customer services to get anywhere

How long have you been with them? I've been with O2 for about 6 years now so I guess I qualify as a long term customer. I'm also on a £25 contract.
2 years last month, i guess long term customer status has a 3+ year term requirement!
I was on a £25 a month contract, but after finishing uni, I found I used it a lot less...changed to £19pm, saved a bunch of cash, but it might be stopping me getting a XDA IIs on the cheap! doh.
Well, as Zero hour is fast approaching on what i have been told by business cs at T-Mobile (UK) that the TP2 aka Vario 5 will be out on Tuesday (Subject to anymore push backs) i thought id start a thread so we can discuss our findings etc.
I will be giving them a call on Tuesday to see if i can get my grubby little hands on it and will let you all know if i get any success!
Those of you that know me from the Kaiser Section of this board will know I did the same with the Vario 3 and ended up with a huge mass of "Im calling now, cmooooon" and it was rather funny to read!
Jas
I am interested in a vario 5 too. I wonder what the price and contract will be.
Well i spoke to a chap at T-Mobile on Tuesday last week and i asked about pricing and as it wasnt out he couldnt be sure etc but said he thought that it would be free on my account which is a Business Flext 35 + WnW Pro which comes to ~£45/month.
I'll give them a call today and see what they say.

I think it ought to be free for £45 a month. I currently pay half that for the basic package (including the basic webn'walk) which is OK for me.
keep us updated mate, im interested as to when they'll be getting stock, contract runs out on wednesday and mpd have been messing me about a bit!
id imagine it'll be free on a £35/month contract...
Gah, you got a date!
When I rang Orange last week I got 'within the next two weeks'.
Blimey! That would be quick... i remember when we used to wait months from a HTC release to a branded version.
I currently have a pre-order paid for and waiting for an Acer M900 and (diferences aside) I will possibly get which ever I can first .... and as i'm already on TMob, this could be the deciding factor!
Although, after my TD I swore I would never get another HTC device .....
Surely this cannot be true!!!!

No FM Radio? Then its a no-buy for me. I need my Absolute Radio going around the M25 in the mornings.
I don't get why everyone trips over the missing radio. If you use the radio a lot, why not buy a portable one (they are cheap) with a 3,5 mm headphone jack.
because i'd then need to carry ANOTHER device in my very small motorbike jacket pockets - so, a converged device (Read, contains FM radio) is exactly what i need.
I just called T-Mobile UK to enquire about the availablility of this phone as I too am due an upgrade and they say it is NOT on there list for release this week
John
hardly surprising that the left hand and right hand dont know what they are doing.
Your best bet, unless your in a REAL rush, is to wait. Wasn't it supposed to be tomorrow? Surley you can wait for that
yah tmob telling me nada to tomorrow
Well an update for you all:
Ive basicly spent the entire day on the phone to T-Mobile (reorganising contracts - not just pestering them about a release date!) and ended up getting quite high up the ladder and they have started playing the "Well it is coming soon but it could be another couple of months yet" card.
To be honest and sorry to let everyone down from an update point of view, ive just ordered one sim free from work so i wont be getting any more updates from them, Although i am on the "High Priority First Call" list so they will call me as soon as it comes out.... apparently, no doubt we shall know here before they ring anyway though.
Mine should be arriving tomorrow and ill try and do a nice review of it but to be honest theres already a few in detail reviews and i doubt mine would cover anything that they havent already done.
I am looking forward to it though i must say!

i've landed myself an unbranded touchpro2/mda vario v from mobilephones direct on t-mobile uk. yep they are offering the touch pro 2 free on a 18 month contract at 39.15gbp monthly. no need for CID or security unlocks when hardspl get released etc. next delivery on all items so i think thats a smashing deal!
i also signed up with mobilesphonesdirect for the pro2 after i've been told the vario5 should be out by the end of June which i don't want to wait. i prefer the phone unlocked and in it's original design.

Can I ask how you guys are getting the phone for free. When I rang up they told me to ring tmobile and find out what my upgrade value was (it was £200). I gave mobilephones direct this and they said the phone would cost me £250 to upgrade. Have you all got higher upgrade status or was I just unlucky and spoke to the wrong person!

You will need CID / Sec Unlock unless you got a pre-release version.
Even then most pre-rel devices are CID locked (by that I mean need Hard SPL to flash unsigned custom ROMs) still. You can check sec unlock status in the bootloader. Does it say Security unlocked at the top?

how did you get your upgrade value? I've tried and nobody from tmob will give it to me.

Now this deal looks good too but says nothing about daily browsing costs, nor does it on the Vodafone website.
Can anyone confirm that both above deals incurr EXTRA browsing/email/surfing costs?
I want to buy my HTC TP2 today but there is no point getting it and having to incurr large daily charges for a device that really is going to primarily be connected to the net daily.
Cheers
Both deals have inclusive internet so there will be no additional charge.
The T-Mobile £1 charge only applies if you don't have an add on Web n'Walk package, which the contract you quoted does have.
I think the W&W deal has a fair use policy of 1gb. I have had W&W for a few years now and despite tethering to my laptop and using data on my WM devices heavily I have never had a letter from T-Mobile asking me to reduce my use.
However I am concerned about the difficulty in contacting MPD. My TP2 is misbehaving. Not sure yet if it is a hardware fault but lack of communications with MPD worries me. Guess I will have to contact HTC but I want the option of a replacement handset rather than a repair.
Thank you for you're reply aerotec.
Well to be honest I have contacted them by email (wednesday) with no reply and called them around 10 times since then with no reply including leaving voice mail this morning - this is very worrying and a major issue if anything goes wrong with the phone, it has totally put me off.
I'm considering Expansys now as they have returned all my emails quickly, I didnt even have to call.
I hope yours gets sorted mate.
if you go directly to voda mate, on their bussiness page, you can get a free HTC TP2, 900 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited internet for £34.03 + vat... hold in, i'll link it.

It looks alot better to go directly to voda or am i missing something ?
EDIT : To get the plan i was on about, hit the 18 month click box and click 'view all plans'
The MPD deal is still pretty good. I took the 12 month deal as it worked out about the same as buying it unconnected.
I just hope I can sort out the handset problem though it has worked ok today.
I drove 5hrs yesterday and the TP2 kept giving me connection errors and Tomtom kept hanging on me. Why can't my gadgets just WORK!

Thats the exact deal I got, although they don't have any more stock till monday apparently, but there was one available in my local store so she reserved it for me, and i picked it up same day.
MPD supply a non-brandaed, stock HTC TP2, where is vodafones is branded is the only real difference.
Thats a damn good deal, beats T-Mobile hands down.
I wish I could get one from my local store, but none have any.
I would prefer non-branded, but I'll definately take a look at that!
Thanks!
EDIT: Pretty sure -T-Mobile give you 1GB fair usage policy whereas Voda is 500MB?
I've just signed up for that deal aswell, and yeah, no stock till monday, I went to my local store and they'd just sold the only one they had... so i gotta wait
Apparently coz it's a bussiness phone local stores hold hardly any stock anyways..
More time to dowload goodies and fill up the 8GB card i just bought for it
EDIT : Also my local store didn't want to honour this deal as they said ' it's a bussiness only deal, were not a bussiness shop' so i'd recommend calling the number on the voda site, they were pleasant enough to deal with.
Don't go with T-Mobile, they're worse than useless.

I quite like it (not sure how many share my opinion here though).
Was getting bored of the black HTC theme on my other HTC phones (TyTN II/Touch HD).
To change the ROM you'd just need to install a new bootloader to unlock it and then install whatever ROM. I think the stock ROMs are available on the wiki, bear in mind it invalidates your warranty though. I've not done it myself since having the original TyTN handset and loading a custom ROM but it's fairly simple, a mate of mine did his TP1 the other day when he was round my place, didn't really pay much attention but it was basically the same process.
Ok sounds easy enough, thanks.
So would this also enable me to download the official HTC ROMs and the WM 6.5? or do you need to have an unbranded HTC phone for this?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.
MPD got back to me finally so all good.
So my choice is now unbranded (at extra cost £89 with a slightly inferiour voda contract) or branded (free with a better contract) - hmmm!
from how i see it... i might be wrong (i'm still wet behind the ears) you cant flash any rom to any TP2 yet untill someone comes up with a hardSPL for it (dunno about un-branded though) someone please confirm ?
From what i've read in the rom devolopment section they're working on it.
Once that's done.. you'll be able to whack any ROM on it and get rid of any branding.
Till then you gotta live with the branding i think.
Thanks - all my questions answered, much appreciated all.
The branding is AWFUL! pink white grey and black
But it is very easy to undo without flashing. There is a thread in the themes section, install one file and its gone
got mine from MPD and yeah they were a pain to get thru too via phone sometimes and email! i am very persistent so kept ringing till i got an answer sometimes 5 times back to back but i get thru. emails were answered quite quickly and i even had my contracts emailed to me for signing so i could get phone next day.............impressive! i did however speak to another gentleman who had no clue what i was on about when i enquired bout the postage of my phone. i got the t-mobile combi 30 deal where you got 700 mins plus unlimited texts w/out w&w as i already have a t-mobile line fully loaded on flext 35. it cost me £29.15 monthly and i paid £45 for phone!
that deal for £34.25 is quite good and phone is free. you get an unbranded and unlocked handset which is the biggest plus. getting the phone from voda direct means that it will come with their version of the stock rom which is not very good at all! keep ringing till MPD answers as they do eventually..............you need to get phone unbranded to truly experience the beauty of the phone. that IMO beats the lack of contact from MPD. when you do get thru you will get sorted. i think it gets rather busy in there and it is only a small shop with limited number of staff. it is also a walk in shop not online based like others. if they are busy dealing with walk in customers they won't answer phone!

pretty bad from what i have been told! you can't flash custom roms at present till hard spl is released. this will also have a security unlock that will enable you to flash custom roms. ETA is not known but it is work in progress. in branded state you will only be able to flash voda updates. HTC rom or future htc updates you will not be able to use till hrad spl is available. even if you remove the look of the phone the base rom will still be voda and that is the issue. the unbranded handset with stock rom works far better than voda branded one! IMO the choice is clear!
My PDA history:
1) Fujitsu Pocket LOOX
(I ran TomTom 2 in 2003 with a CF-based GPS receiver, people used to ask "wtf is THAT???" )
2) O2 XDA IIi
In the course of improving this device and upgrading it's OS to WM2003SE, I found these wonderful forums many years back! The IIi worked like a charm for 2+ years until it began to randomly hard reset itself, so I went out & got a nice 2nd hand...
3)TyTN II
I loved the whole slide keyboard & tilting screen, it really worked well the way I use my phone, although the keyboard was a touch too small for my liking. I didnt like the loss of good GPS when upgrading to WinMo 6.1 but put up with it as other parts of the OS seemed faster to me, still that slow screen meant no decent video/youtube playback, so I dreamed and dreamed, and saved and saved, and then ebayed, and today I received in the post a brand-new-in-box, Vodafone branded, but unlocked:
4) Touch Pro 2 \o/ (thank you ebay!)
As a long-time forum lurker and occasional poster, I have read all of the FAQs and gone thru the list of software that people reccomend for this device.
I am looking for people's suggestions as to useful things for this device: I am already biting my lip TRYING REAL HARD not to unbox the phone (it still has the HTC screen protector on) until the full body protector kit arrives, so I can keep this device in mint condition: I intend to use this as my primary phone for the forseeable future.
So far I have ordered for it:
1 x replacement battery (generic, cheapo from ebay version, as the 2 I ordered for my TyTN II function exactly like the stock one, have overcharge/overcurrent protection and work just fine)
1 x car windscreen mount (I use satnav a LOT and also BT handsfree phone at same time, so a screen mount is essential)
1 x HTC OEM 12-24v car charger (I need 24v as sometimes I end up driving large vans or campervans as part of my job and some of them run 24 volt systems - I think this is what could have fried my trusty old XDA IIi)
Question: is there any other hardware owners would reccomend me to get? such as the HTC splitter/charger dongle? any good but cheap small BT speakers? etc
I intend to stay with the 'stock' ROM for the intial 'getting to know my phone' period. and gather that official WM 6.5 ROMS may be available soon from either HTC or Vodafone UK.
Question: if the stock ROMS offer a reasonable blend of performance and stability, is it worth flashing HardSPL and changing ROMS/Radios?
Final Question/more of a thought:
I see on ebay a replacement touch screen digitiser can be had for a mere £12.99 for this device. looking at the image, it seems the zoombar is merely another part of the digitiser interface rather than a seperate sensitive 'strip'
I also would like to see the zoombar used in more than just the 3 basic apps it gets used in at present. Is it therefore likely that any hacking of said zoombar functions for our various needs/wants would be accomplished with editing/altering of the library/.dll that deals with the touchscreen, or am I just reading too much into the one pic? (for the curious ebayer, it's item no 390082629387)
Joe
P.S. I am going to derive HUGE satisfaction in 2 weeks time when I walk into my local Vodafone shop. I am on Vodafone PAYG, it works well for me and I find the charges reasonable. This is the basic convo with the Voda salesman in shop:
"Can I get this on PAYG? where I just pay for the handset?"
"Oh no, this is just a business phone, they wont release it on PAYG." (turns out it CAN be had for around £540 from Vodafone)
"Cheapest we could do it at is.... £40... well maybe £35 a month for a 24 month contract" (works out at £840 for the phone eeek!)
I intend to go in and purchase my £10 PAYG talktime voucher and waft the phone it's intended for, and see if he notices I have the much-vaunted 'business handset I cant possibly get on PAYG' on PAYG Vodafone hehe

Ah, but how much would you be paying for a SIM-only contract that offers unlimited Internet? Probably £20 a month. That means you're actually paying £20 a month for the contract, and only £15 a month for the phone, which works out at £360, with two years interest-free credit. So you've ripped yourself off if you bought it for £540.

If I had paid £540, yes I agree, but as I paid £321 for it on ebay I feel well chuffed
also: I checked out Vodafones contracts for this device: althought the minutes/month seemd nice even at the 'cheaper' tarrifs, I would still pay for my internet daily (50p for 15 megs, whereas I get a 50p charge for 25 megs on my PAYG) and messaging also cost money (11p a SMS I think)
I buy a £10 voucher for my PAYG and get 100 minutes & 300 SMS, 1 month validity, does me just fine! internet has ben 50p for 25Mb a day now for some time on Voda PAYG, and I also dont mind spending 50p for a days usage of the internet when out in the wild.
Well, if you're happy.
I just checked Vodafone's website, and it's actually a lot cheaper than you seem to think. For £30 a month for two years you get the phone for free. That gives you either 900 minutes a month and unlimited texts, or 750 minutes, 250 texts and unlimited landline calls. Either deal includes "unlimited" Internet use (subject to a 500MB a month fair usage policy). If you assume the contract is worth £20 a month, that brings the cost of the phone down to £240, with two years interest-free credit, and no hassles about guarantee if it goes wrong, which can be a problem on eBay.
On top of that, there's no charge at all for the first three months, which saves you another £90. So that brings the cost of the phone down to just £150, with two years interest-free credit. That seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Obviously, if you think you might either want to change providers or upgrade the phone in less than two years, then you have to pay extra to get that flexibility. But even the 18 month deal isn't that bad: £35 a month rather than 30, and no free 3 months, so that works out at about £270 for the phone. On a 12-month contract it comes to about £350.
As the guy above can't actually read:

Question: is there any other hardware owners would reccomend me to get? such as the HTC splitter/charger dongle? any good but cheap small BT speakers? etc
I intend to stay with the 'stock' ROM for the intial 'getting to know my phone' period. and gather that official WM 6.5 ROMS may be available soon from either HTC or Vodafone UK.

Orange mad a big song and dance about being the first UK carrier to announce that they will be getting the HTC Desire. However, since them T-Mobile have beaten them to the release and now it looks like Vodafone will be next to get the handset out, judging by official release dates. (Before anyone mentions it I am well aware that it is available on Orange through Carphone Whorehouse and other online retailers. It's just that I want to know when Orange themselves are getting it).
I've heard rumours that Orange may be going for a 2nd April release, but nothing definite.
Does anyone know a definite date when Orange UK is going to get the handset? When I call them I am still getting operatives who don't even know that the thing exists, and others are still referring to it as the HTC Bravo! When I do get through to someone who knows about the Desire they just say "It wil appear on the website when we get it".
And you can bet that when it does appear on their website it already be out of stock.
Impatient? Me?!? Never!
I don't know an official date but just to let you know T-Mobile had a deal with HTC to get the phone out first.
They probably tried for an exclusivity deal (like with the G1, hero) but got rejected and got an (albeit quite short) timed exclusive deal.
Which is the reason why officially t-mobile themselves are stocking it before anyone else (I am aware you can get an unlocked handset with the contract ontop from places like mobiles.co.uk, carphonewarehouse).
It must have been a pretty late change of name.
My T-mobile supplied phone says HTC Bravo on the box!

They say HTC Desire on the box (where it matters).
The HTC Bravo sticker on the back is something which HTC has slapped on, internally they must be still calling it by it's codename.
It's been the HTC Desire for months.

I'm in the same boat - be interested to see what they offer you on upgrade. Phoned today and they said it should be out soon, but then said it's not available to upgrade customers until a few weeks later
They are so full of *beep* it's unreal. I think I might actually get my PAC code and go with Vodafone. If you see the other thread that I created T-Mob customers have had some cracking upgrade deals. Whereas Orange are still contemplating charging me for the phone. So in short the wait may not be for much longer, but it may not be worth it to stay with Orange...
If it is a Pay As You Go option you are looking for, some Carphone Warehouses still have stock (unlocked but with an Orange SIM).
As I mentioned in another thread, this is how I got my hands on one and I'm on an O2 contract.

Their operatives really haven't got a clue what's going on. When I spoke to them a couple of days ago I was told it would be available to upgrade customers at the same time as new customers! I had this exact same issue when I upgraded to the Diamond - it really depends who you speak to. Sometimes you'll get someone who's really clued up and will fall over themselves to help you, othertimes you get put through to someone who would appear to be the most unhelpful person on the planet.
The more I think about it, the more I'm tempted to jump to T-Mobile. I can get exactly the same deal that I am currently on with Orange (600mins, unlimited texts, "unlimited" mobile internet) for £30 per month, with the handset costing £60, directly from the T-Mobile website. So (and this is addressed to fuzzmo) if Orange say that they want £100 for the handset, tell them to go forth and multiply!
The other benefit of switching to T-Mobile is their rather tasty 3Gb "fair use" policy (compared to Oranges paltry 500Mb) for mobile internet on Android phones.
Oh, I'm going to have so much fun with Orange once they get the phone!
I've ordered my upgrade from buymobilephones yesterday. Switched from Racoon 30 to Racoon 25 and added 500mb of internet for £5. Phone cost me 69.99 which is a bit of a rip off now I think back but I suppose its not a huge deal.
Did say they had no idea when they'd actually have it in stock though. "Could be next week, could me in a months time"

Just to let you know, if you like Orange (their coverage, orange Wednesdays etc) it's an excellent time to now go for T-Mobile. On T-Mobile you can get some excellent deals with a barrowful of minutes and texts AND a 3GB internet FUP policy. In around 2 months time they'll be merging with orange and while your plan will stay the same you'll be able to enjoy benefits like <insert whatever the new network's name is here> Wednesdays and the combined strength of Orange & T-Mobiles network coverage
Probably around the same time as O2

Yup I am really thinking about it as they appear to treat their upgrade customers with much more respect and they certainly do give you a great Internet bundle. I am gonna tell them to go forth and multiply as they are just like Nationwides adverts - 'New Customers only'. Why they don't give a *beep* about their current high spending customers lord only knows....
My only concern with T-Mobile is their network coverage which leads me to....

Is this confirmed? Is it true that they will be using Orange masts etc. and also bringing in 'Orange' Wednesdays?.... If so (although the latter isn't important - coverage is) then that is a deal clincher for me...

Orange wednesdays isn't confirmed but they will be 1 network after the merger, not 2 and it;s been given the goahead by the EU and will be done in the next few months so it stands to reason they will use each other's current masts and have better coverage.

[topic=off]I wonder what they'll call the combined network? T'orange? A good northern name. [/topic]
The deal is confirmed

As for the name I thought Tangerine using the T-Mobile font in White on an orange background thus combining both.
